I liked this edition better than I did the first one, there were stories from some of my favorite writers, such as Robert R McCammon, Graham Masterton, and Richard Christian Matheson. The following is from the description on Amazon along with my thoughts on each story.THE DEEP END by Robert McCammonEveryone thinks the drowning death of Neil Calder in the local swimming pool was a tragic accident. Only his father knows better. Now, on the last night of summer, Neil returns in search of revenge. One of my favorite authors, I loved the story about a father so determined to find sense in the senseless death of his son he sets out to find the truth, only sometimes the truth can be more than we can handle.INTERVAL by Norman PrentissFlight 1137 from St. Louis by way of Nashville has gone missing. As anxious friends and family gather around the gate, a ticket clerk finds herself eyewitness to a moment of inhuman evil.I liked the idea of the story and wished there was something more, or perhaps longer. Once I understood the true meaning of "Interval" I was left flat with its ending. I wanted to know more or perhaps if I knew the intentions earlier on I would have a differnce of opion, but as it stands I felt this was one of the weaker entries.IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK by Shawntelle MadisonEleanor has come from New York City to prep an old Victorian house in Maine for America’s Mysterious Hotspots. Although she’s always thrown herself into her work, this job will take her places she’s never dreamed of going.Surprisingly good story from a writer I knew nothing about. I thought it was well written and a nice twist. After the story I recalled an old Men Without Hats song, "Ideas For Walls."THE NIGHT HIDER by Graham MastertonC. S. Lewis wrote about a portal that led to a world of magic and enchantment. But the wardrobe in Dawn’s room holds only death—until she solves its grisly mystery.A master story teller takes a fantastic story and reworks it to suite his own twisted needs in this devilishly delightful take on a classic.WHATEVER by Richard Christian MathesonA 1970s rock ’n’ roll band that never was—in a world that is clearly our own . . . but perhaps isn’t, not anymore . . . or, at least, not yet—takes one hell of a trip.Great story, would have liked this to be a bit longer. Whatever seems like a band that could actually have existed or exist in the realm of our imagination. The greatest band that never was, written in a almost biographic style it resonates long after you finish reading.Summations: I thought that this volume had stronger stories in it and would highly recommend it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Solid, Creepy Stories By E.M. MacCallum Short stories, for me, are just snippets of a bigger, more awesome story. This is often why I don't review them. I want the big story, not a preview. But I couldn't pass up on the incredibly talented authors. If you're unfamiliar with any of the names, this is like that sample platter at the pub. So sit back, keep your feet from dangling over the edge of the bed, keep a light on, and enjoy. The Deep End by Robert R. McCammon is a haunting tale with a creepy and mysterious adversary. I always like McCammon's descriptions. They're so visual that it reels the reader in. No pun intended.Interval by Norman Prentiss makes a bad day of work seem inconsequential when it comes to what lurks between hope and dismay. This was a unique story and one I wish I could read more of.If These Walls Could Talk by Shawntelle Madison. What can I say? It was a classic. Gotchic building, unsuspecting victims and a villain in the wings. What threw me was the ending. What the heck?! I mean this as a compliment. I could have had another 100 pages. The Night Hider by Graham Masterton is a heart-pounding story that involves a bit of C.S. Lewis. I found this to be fascinating! The premise behind the "night hider" was a cool take too.Whatever by Richard Christian Matheson is a unique tale. It took a bit more for me to get into but was a great conclusion to the anthology. At the end of it all, I wish I could have full novels out of each of these stories. *Sigh*. My favorite story was probably If These Walls Could Talk by Shawntelle Madison. It surprised, horrified and kept me glued to those pages. I also enjoyed Robert R. McCammon's style. The man knows how to paint a picture in the reader's mind. So, if you don't have a lot of time on your hands, take on a short story. It's not long and will please anyone looking for a solid, creepy story.

While I enjoyed Dark Screams By Michael Cieslak Once again, let me preface the review by stating that the copy I read was an ARC I received for free for the purpose of reviewing it.While I enjoyed Dark Screams: Volume Two, I found it a little disjointed. The stories did not mesh with each other as the stories in the first volume did (despite different topics, the tones were similar enough in the first volume that the book seemed more seamless). The second volume in the series contains five short stories by masters of the horror genre."The Deep End" by Robert McCammon was by far my favorite in this volume. The story of a shape-shifting creature living in a community pool, taking small children year after year, is full of tension and genuine fear. There is an undertone of uncertainty as well. Is any of this actually happening or has the protagonist been driven mad with grief?Norman Prentiss' "Interval" starts as a heart wrenching tale of loss and grief. The build up of emotions is almost unbearable. When it switches to a different type of story near the midpoint, the result is a totally different story, but one which is equally entertaining. My only complaint is that the end seemed a bit as if it was the set-up for a series of related tales."If These Walls Could Talk" is reminiscent of classic people-invited-to-explore-a-haunted-house stories like The Haunting of Hill House and Hell House, but with an ending twist from Mr. Poe. Creepy and fun.In "The Night Hider," Graham Masterson poses the question: what if CS Lewis' Narnia series had a horribly dark inspiration? The answer is a story of revenge and haunting which is fun, but a bit too long. The only story which I did not particularly care for was the last one, entitled "Whatever." I am normally a huge fan of Richard Christian Matheson, but this history of a rock band, while intriguing, lacked any genuine scares.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A notable accomplishment with some flaws. By Dark Moon This book is well written, easy to read and mostly enjoyable. The basic eDream premise is a very good one and ought to be the springboard for a superb story. It is exciting. And James Duffy is an accomplished writer. But there are some issues. I'm far from a cheerleader for human common sense and yet I found it increasingly difficult to believe that quite so many people would become totally addicted to eDreams (perfect lucid dreaming); become addicted to the point where they stop going to work altogether and basically destroy their waking lives completely. While I enjoyed the story as it progressed my lack of belief in this extreme level of addiction continued to eat away at my ability to really become as deeply involved with the unfolding events. Some other incidents in this book did not ring true to me either. At one point when the owner of a factory which had just been bombed runs up to the fire chief on the scene and yells at him to stop spraying water on the just barely extinguished flames, the fire chief responds, "Hey, man, it's your building," and he orders the firemen to stop spraying water. Sorry, but fire chiefs don't behave like that ever. Period. A small detail? Maybe. But too much stuff like that puts a road block in the flow of the book. There is also some political intrigue here which I would categorize as improbable and a bit naive. Long story short, great idea, good writing, but a bit too much suspension of disbelief required. So if you are really hot on the basic concept then give it a shot. There is some fun to be had here especially at the price of the electronic edition. James Duffy is certainly a good writer and I enjoyed this book. The last few chapters and the ending were masterfully done. I look forward to reading and reviewing more of James Duffy's books.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed this book once I got to the heart of the story. By Alex Key I have had lucid dreams so I really wanted to read this book. However, I had a hard time getting started. I just could not get into the book. I picked it up a number of times, read a few pages and then set it aside. Finally, I decided to read the book. I muddled along until I got into the heart of the story. After than it was very interesting. My suggestion is buy the book and then read it. If you have a hard time getting started like I did, just plod along. Everyone enjoys a certain book or dislikes a certain book based upon their own personal preferences.I personally found this book interesting and thoughtful. It was a good buy.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Please Keep Writing By Noble Truth Very good antihero character. This is not often seen. The character of Tartrum is almost like watching a Dark Lord like Sauron rising from his humble beginnings to true power. If you don't mind rooting for evil every now and then, this is your story.Know that this is really just the second part to what I imagine is the first part of a longer story.I also wish the author would create an update page on his profile, so that readers may know when to expect the next volume.Overall, I give this book 5 stars, because I like the concept and I am willing to overlook the minor errors that come with self publishing, ie grammar and the occasional typographical error.

It's always good to be a bad guy By Brad I gotta say I cannot wait to see what happens next tartum May be bad at times but for the most part he is a pretty good guy unless you wrong or anger him I also wonder what he is mixed with since he is called a half breed and fire doesn't effect him we know he isn't a demon so he must be half phoenix or dragon but I'm thinkin it must be something rare that I can't think of either way can't wait to see what he does next.

Female Vampire By Helbel I liked the fact that a female vampire is telling the story about her life and the people who are a part of it.Sometimes it was gory, but, that is the way of the vampire.I am looking forward to the next book. For me, the story is moving towards a religious tale.

Through this fast paced eco-fiction series, the author lightly touches on key points of our relationship with the planet and the growing urgency for each of us to take action to avoid a much darker future for our children. The story line of 2022, revolves around a world-wide threat made by an eco-terrorist organization and the efforts to stop them while at the same time setting up a large scale experiment for sustainable living. The book combines murder, espionage, romance and revenge into the fictional story while exploring the urgency of global issues we face in real life. This book, along with the others in the Percipience series are not just meant to entertain and to raise awareness of important issues. They are also aim to act as a catalyst to get the reader to think and motivate them to take individual actions to help with these worldwide problems. From the back cover of 2022...Using an uncanny ability to harvest information to predict the future, philanthropist Richard foresees a dark future for the human race. This future is exacerbated by the return of cold-war-like tensions, sophisticated terrorist organizations, and new controls on information flow. He believes he knows what needs to be done to reverse the trend, but can it be achieved in time, even with the resources at his disposal? Should he turn to terrorism to make it work? And if he's wrong, and his plan backfires, will it mean the end of most, or all, of the human race?

Chilling Read that Takes Aim at the Most Pressing Issue of Our Time By Andrea Davis 2022 is a work of fiction, but it is not hard to imagine it as reality in our near future. The author crafts a taut thriller that balances a lot of spinning plates. There are global ramifications at stake, the future of our planet as we know it. The writing is clear and concise with attention to detail and research into scientific concepts and terminology. The characters are well formed and feel three-dimensional. Some of the players are cunning and mysterious while others are much more forthright. The dialogue they share is rapid-fire and white hot. This adds to the gravity of the stakes. Full of suspense and intrigue, this is an excellent starter for the series and I can’t wait to read more. Fantastic!

Fast paced and thought provoking By Michael Nail for gimmethatbook This review originally appeared on my blog at [...]Thanks to the author for gifting me this review copy!2022 is a fast paced, thought provoking read. Basically, the world is running out of resources and one man thinks he has the solution. His ideas have validity, but is there something more sinister going on under the surface? The plot is easy to believe; we are experiencing this right now, with all the furor over greenhouse gas, oceans full of plastic, and food shortages. Also very believable is the giant organization that is monitoring and disseminating information–they appear to be benign, but that is also a concern lurking just below the surface. As I read, I found nothing that would strain my credulity. I even believed that there would be hundreds of people willing to sign up to go live in one of the remote “villages” that was being constructed under the guise of saving the planet. I would liked to have seen more of the inner workings of the villages, but they were in the process of being built. I’d be interested to see how the Elders managed their people and if they would be as fair as they claimed they would be.There are three strong women, Diane, Sue and Olivia, as main characters. Each of them have their own personality and foibles; I had to laugh about the idea of no makeup or coffee being a deal breaker for village living! There is also a professional killer who is, surprisingly, a woman. This adds an interesting twist to the story, as Hope (the killer) can befriend the other women and not tip her hand. She’s a true chameleon.Richard, who wants the villages built for his own agenda, is a great characterization of a megalomaniacal genius. There is no problem that money can’t solve for him; but does he really want the planet saved? Or just saved on his terms? The twist at the ending sets up book two perfectly. The best part about 2022 is how it makes you think. There is the obligatory population killing virus, and double crosses galore (and a few surprises), but I enjoyed reading about how the world is being affected, conveyed through normal plot advancement. The author takes this subject very seriously, and even provides a few appendixes at the end of the book, explaining his thought process.Overall, the message comes through loud and clear without being too preachy. Anyone reading this will come away with more information that they didn’t even know was lacking in their mind, and hopefully, they will practice some of the suggestions put forth by Kroes. This truly is an issue that affects us all.Want your own copy? You can pick it up here.

The world is not the same and the government scrutinizes everything you look at, all of your search engines and decides if you are going against what you have been given access. Within this world there are many who feel that we are abusing our planet and depleting our resources. Within this book you will meet many different people whose ideologies and outlook will conflict as this eco-fiction series takes off with a murder geared at waking up the public to what this organization called CURE feels needs to be addressed as one man is killed and others will follow. Are you abusing the planet and do we need to take action? What about the future of our planet and our children?Meet the people of CURE and learn more about the organization that is used as their cover or umbrella. This organization is well hidden and the work they are doing to create a virus that would kill millions yet hoping to store it safely upon needed, will terrify the reader as you learn more about this eco-terrorist group and how they set up a large scale experiment for what they claim is sustainable living. The Percipience is the place or city where they will house the virus and somewhere in Africa there are people that will be vaccinated if needed. As we hear the voices of the people of this group and learn about their organization we witness the murder of a man named Mikhail by a young girl so well disguised you would never know she was a woman. Within this organization there is a man named Richard who developed this virus, hires those who will work on it and it is his master plan that another organization called the DIR will have to stop. The information highway is vast and the way data is processed unique. Would you want a chip implanted in you, or phone or credit card that would allow the government to know your every move? What happens when you try to hide but can’t. As the sister of this man who was killed accesses his laptop and information she learns about the virus and falls prey to their ad. One phone call could put Diane in jeopardy as Hope the girl who killed her brother is able to access her burn phone, triangulate her location, meet with her friend Gwen hoping to snare her.The Preservation of Faith is the organization and Olivia is about to enter into something that just might not be what she expected. Listening to Richard as the author flashes back to his planning with Mikhail, you learn of his intentions, the areas where he wants sites and the amount of people that will be housed there and their purpose for being there. Olivia is concerned about her friend’s murder not realizing that the people she works for are responsible as the sister of the victim, Diane, decides to become part of this group possibly uncovering the harsh truth. But, Mikhail is smart, astute and Hope even smarter as they realize that Diane is just the candidate they want for their project.Within DIR we meet Sue and her new partner Spencer who is about to learn more about these people when attending what the author calls The Colonies to learn more about their work and hopefully plant a device on one of their computers to learn more. But, this is not an ordinary organization and people are hired, as spies and their capabilities to funnel and get information is mindboggling. Recapping the events and how Olivia became part of this project and making the virus will help engage readers further into the story. The flashbacks help tell the background story and the author shares his thoughts on why CURE is becoming so powerful, just how it is linked to Preservation of Life and how dangerous their ideologies are and if DIR can stop them. But, someone is wise to Spencer’s visit and when he tries to access a computer and plant his bug the surprise is anything but what is expected. As Olivia relates her work and meets with Hope to share a trailer she hopes to learn more about Virtuesh a vaccine which is a derivative of the H1N5 Virus, how it will be maintained and why once she joins the team she can never return home. This vaccine if stored the right way can survive two hundred years or more. There are builders who sign up for a year and residents for life. No one is allowed to bring anything but the personal effects that they are told and no one can share what is happening in these sites which there are four in all. Virtuesh and its vaccine are about done and Olivia has been charged with creating more. The Pleasant Belief Foundation is looking to hire people with different skills like researchers like Diane and Olivia. Their main concern is the current state of the planet.Imagine living by the rules set out by someone who decides what you wear, eat, own and how you live. Would you sign up for a lifetime living somewhere without the normal conveniences in life and no real way to leave on your own? CURE’s threat is serious and the DIR wants to get more about their environment information. But, those behind it have another agenda and hoping to keep the residents at bay and under the control of the group they named The Elders would make sure that the people living there would never question anything. Richard’s plan is to have four villages that would operate “ as experiments in sustainable living.” The world’s eight billion people would destroy the planet. So, Mikhail has an alternate plan and here is where things get dangerous and you begin to wonder what the real motive behind the plan is and what he intends to accomplish. Mikhail’s plan involves more people and like-minded people. He developed a virus or as he calls it Viruesh-B and it is dangerous if released. Did he want to obliterate everyone? What is his reasoning and how would this work with the population in each village and why? While Diane is given the tests needed to enter the program and be a part of it, she never expects that she will be given certain rights that others are not. Wanting to settle her business and take her own RV it is surprising that they allow her to drive up on her own. But, what they have planned for her and her plan are two different things. Hoping to learn about her brother’s death and why he was killed she enters this job not without fear. When learning more about the virus Olivia is able to get time to work in the lab to develop more. But, why? The DIR now has to learn more about the Pleasant Belief Foundation and why they need to stop CURE. They disrupt oil refineries, and placed explosives where they could co the most harm and the DIR or Department of Information Retrieval formed in 2018 was set up so that there would be a “ single organization, with no vested interest anywhere responsible for providing data on any topic to other government divisions. Curtail Unnecessary Resource Exploitation: CURE: the eco-terrorist group is at the helm and now Internet information in this new era and time or the Internet Information Protection Act or ITPA was put into place to make prevent access to any data movement from Internet sites “without proper authorization while still allowing for e-commerce and some types of social media. Within the chapter titled planning you hear the voices of both Richard the creator and Mikhail and I can’t help thinking the concept and what they plan is chilling. Imagine being forced into what you might think if you really look closer and hard slavery of a different type. People that have to complete tasks, have no control over who they mate with and Genetic Pairing according to specific traits. The author through Mikhail and Richard explains on pages 45- 54 the rationale behind their thinking.Creating the responsibilities of the Elders and explaining how he wants the villages to be run you begin to wonder why these people decided to live there, go along with his plan and accept everything he says. When Sue learns that Spencer, her new partner is missing and learns that he was held by the people in the Colony, she immediately inquires, tells him to remain and with the help of Olivia he learns more and even obtains a vile of the deadly virus. But, just how are these villages or sites learning or going to be self-contained? What and where would their food supply come from? The more you learn the more bone chilling it is and the more you wonder just how this man was able to create something that brainwashed so many into submission. But, the government was alert and colonies were closed for infractions and laws that were broken and how did a strange new strain of flu come about and the tensions were rising and just where would the next crisis come from? CURE stuck to its word and posted the results of consumption from the industrialized countries and punished the top ten by hacking into the central computers and changing the host –country codes. Just how you will learn when you read page 122 and how can they be stopped when social media outlets, phones and charge card transactions are stopped. How far will CURE go to make a point? Leaks, lies, betrayals, flu that came from where and someone within their organization that is expendable. As the final scene comes into play and all of the players are revealed what will happen if the virus is released? Who is really behind the plot and why? What happens at the end will mystify and surprise readers as one man’s plan comes to fruition as truths become realities, lies become facts and 2022 takes on a whole new light as the end just might be near but for who?As Sue, Olivia and Diane rush to stop the virus from being released someone else just might have other ideas. The Percipience Series has just begun and what happens next will continue in 2222 the next installment. But, first read the information in the Appendices at the end of the book as the author shares some interesting research and information. Would you want you life controlled by someone else? 2022: is this your kind of world? Characters that are well developed, a story line that is fast paced and the end result frightening to say the least. Will the plan that someone devised backfire or will it go off as planned? Read this thought provoking book and you decide whether this is the only way to safe the planet!Four and a half stars

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. consistently awesome stories By SciFi-Nerd While all the critical failure short stories are excellent, I found this one to be exceptional. Great story and awesome ending. I can't recommend this series enough. I would still really like to see character sheets for the group, but that is just my inner nerd talking.

The good, the bad and Coop By Denis McCarthy Just when you would think that the "collapsed sewer district" was the worst neighborhood imaginable, Robert Bevan finds a worse one for the quartet of sub heroic gamers trapped in the lives of their characters from a role playing adventure. This time Tim, Dave, Julian and Cooper head into dangerous territory in search of Barlow the Butcher. Not only will you find the expected horrors of an incontinent half orc, and untimely deaths of magically summoned horses, but some truly brilliant turns of phrase:"You would have to combine at least two of any randomly selected occupants to get a full set of eyes, limbs, or teeth"This is good stuff, but not for the faint of heart or low in constitution.

By Gordon Guano Until I entered the delightfully sick and twisted world of Caverns and Creatures, I thought Magic Missile was the most powerful offensive first level spell. Now I know better, and have to wonder what kind of maniac would put the Mount spell in the grasp of a first level caster./nerdAlso, this book has a very satisfying laughs-to-dollar ratio. Carry on, Mr. Bevan.

I wanted to try this gadget and be able to enjoy watching movies and play game. And this guide has made me decide to buy in the near future this fire stick. Now that I have this user guide I'll be able to enjoy the benefits of this gadget. The book is easy to understand but there was a bit flaw on the grammar and some sentence but it wouldn't affect the essence of this book. This is written to be a guide for users who don't know the way around on getting all the benefits from this gadget. The instructions are understandable even if the user is not techie as the younger generations. This is a great guide and yes I recommend this book to Amazon Fire Stick owners. Enjoy watching and getting all the benefits of this gadget!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The horror that is the Colletti/Davis family continues with Hilary. By Night Owl Reviews Gotta say I didn't see that coming. The horror that is the Colletti/Davis family continues with Hilary. She's the omega and as such has been sequestered most of her life. While by definition she's at the lowest level of the pack hierarchy her human half sometimes overrules. While passive for the most part she does have her limits. And then Oscar kicks down her door.Oscar is just doing his job and then he smells his mate. And the psycho train pulls out of the station. This book had more nuances due to Hilary's status and the marked evolution of her lioness. Oscar is of course on point and ready to pounce but pesky bad guys and bullets keep getting in his way. Oscar was your standard male with attitude and hotness. What girl could resist? My favorite of the two main characters was of course Hilary; the author invested so much more into her character than her mate's. She goes from blah to bling in the awesome department and I suspect her Omega status is no longer an issue or at least in serious danger. I liked the interaction with other characters from previous book and hope for more.Reviewed by: ChrisDisclosure: Free review copy from the publisher/author for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. reviewed by redz world reviews By Tina Brunelle (Redz) Heads or Tails by Celia Kyle is the latest installment in her Quick & Furry series. These a super quick reads do not need to be read in chronological order. Ms. Kyle has become my go to author when I am looking for laughter and heat. She manages to balance humor with the sexy times with very few words. And her heroine in this tale…loved her. Hilary has been a prisoner her entire life but she still manages to find humor in her circumstances. I mean who would think that instead of being cowered and living in fear, Hilary would play little games entirely for her own amusement. Even if the results will lead to painful consequences she has to alleviate the boredom so way right? And then she meets Oscar. Oscar her mate. Oscar who is in danger just because of who he is to her. Her warden has killed for less. But does Hilary focus on the possibility of freedom? No she focuses instead on protecting her mate. I love the strength that Hilary exuded even though omegas are not perceived as strong. Ms. Kyle showed us a woman whose inner strength was phenomenal. Hilary has become my new favorite character in this series and when I grow up I want to be just like her. Five Shooting Stars

I was disappointed that the reason Hillary was taken prisoner at 5 years old was never explained nor did the book explain what happened to her parents/family. I was also disappointed that her Omega powers were not a more integral part of the book since it was hinted at that was the reason she was taken. Also while Hillary was a feisty wonderful woman I really l liked, I felt Oscar wasn't as strong a character as some of the previous hero's. I actually found myself liking Colton more than Oscar. Hopefully, his story will be next. Or Lincoln from the first book whose character mysteriously disappeared even though he was suppose to be Marcus' best friend of many years standing. Back to this book though, Overall it's not very memorable and while it made me smile, the humor wasn't as good. Definitely read the serious, the earlier books are awesome. This one introduces a new character that has the potential for becoming a major influence in permanently disbanding the human/werelion mob. Can't wait to read the next book :-)

It is something we are all born with, but sadly we tend to lose it as we get older and we look down on those who keep their imagination in fine shape. Thankfully Tygo Lee's imagination is still in good working condition and he gladly shares it with us in this book.In this book (appropriately titled 'Imagination') Lee has once again managed to entertain us while making us think about the bigger picture. He takes us to magical lands, introduces us to amazing (or sometimes horrible) people, and reminds us that there is so much more to life than we sometimes remember. This collection of stories will make you question your life, your mind, and your heart without belittling or insulting you. They will teach you things aren't always what they seem, and there is always a chance for redemption.Imagination is extremely well written, fun, and entertaining. Tygo Lee knows exactly what to say and when to say it, and that is very clear here. No matter your age or preferred genre this is a must read for everyone!!

It starts off with the satirical "Totally Awesome" an unflinching look at how today's society punished free and critical thinkers. It was definityl my favorite story out out of all of them. My next favorite is the comical "Copy-Cat" which deals with a frustrated man and a taunting child. As with 'Slumberland." "Imagination" is filled with a great variety of stories from the laugh out loud funny to the deeply thought provoking.

By Charlene There weren't any reviews when I bought this, but the description sounded interesting (and I liked the cover), so I gave it a shot. I'm glad I did! The book was a fun, exciting read, and I really hope the next installment in the series comes out soon.

I became so invested in the characters Paige, Drew and Trish. Paige is a survivor and a great character. I hope as the series continues we learn more about her. This is an alien invasion, but it's more than that, it is about Paige and her struggle to survive. I feel that she has been introduced to us very well, but there is room for growth and I am looking forward to that in the next book in this series! She is a butt-kickin' heroine and If I were in an alien invasion I would definitely want Paige around.I thought the world building was good, the alien city Tom created was awesome, although more detail would have been welcomed. The hybrids were interesting and learning a little about how they were made. I hope we get to learn more about the aliens, where they're from and exactly why they're there. But I do like how the focus is not on the aliens, but on human survival. If you like a book that is action packed from beginning to end, this is it! If you like a strong-female lead, you'll love Paige! This should definitely be on everyone's to-read list!!

By Just Us Books (M. silva) do not have time to read so it will take me long to finish a book , but when I saw the cover of Aftermath I knew I had to read it! I am a sucker for aliens books and this was perfect! The Good : It starts with action. The invasion happens at the beginning of the book. The heroine , Paige, is a very determined young lady risking her own life to safe her friend. The book does not slow down, it keeps getting better and better with each page turn, it is a very dark story, creepy sometimes. All the characters are very likable. I Loved the writing. I hope that in the next book we'll get to know more about the aliens.I would recommend this book to everyone , especially to those fans of The Fifth Wave. The bad : There was nothing bad about it. I really liked the entire book.

Dracula (Xist Classics), by Bram Stoker

Amazon.com Review Dracula is one of the few horror books to be honored by inclusion in the Norton Critical Edition series. (The others are Frankenstein, The Turn of the Screw, Heart of Darkness, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Metamorphosis.) This 100th-anniversary edition includes not only the complete authoritative text of the novel with illuminating footnotes, but also four contextual essays, five reviews from the time of publication, five articles on dramatic and film variations, and seven selections from literary and academic criticism. Nina Auerbach of the University of Pennsylvania (author of Our Vampires, Ourselves) and horror scholar David J. Skal (author of Hollywood Gothic, The Monster Show, and Screams of Reason) are the editors of the volume. Especially fascinating are excerpts from materials that Bram Stoker consulted in his research for the book, and his working papers over the several years he was composing it. The selection of criticism includes essays on how Dracula deals with female sexuality, gender inversion, homoerotic elements, and Victorian fears of "reverse colonization" by politically turbulent Transylvania.

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up?A naive young Englishman travels to Transylvania to do business with a client, Count Dracula. After showing his true and terrifying colors, Dracula boards a ship for England in search of new, fresh blood. Unexplained disasters begin to occur in the streets of London before the mystery and the evil doer are finally put to rest. Told in a series of news reports from eyewitness observers to writers of personal diaries, this has a ring of believability that counterbalances nicely with Dracula's too-macabre-to-be-true exploits. An array of voices from talented actors makes for interesting variety. The generous use of sound effects, from train whistles to creaking doors, adds further atmosphere. Lovers of mysteries and horror will find rousing entertainment in this version of a classic tale.?Carol Katz, Harrison Public Library, NYCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal The Dover volume collects 14 of Stoker's lesser-known horror stories such as "The Crystal Cup," "The Burial of the Rats," and "A Gipsey Prophecy." Though most of his other fiction has been overshadowed by Dracula, these offer some real chills and warrant reading. While editions of Dracula, which celebrated its centennial in 1997, are legion, Broadview's offers several extras, including a chronology of Stoker's life and appendixes on Transylvania, London, Mental Physiology, Reviews and Interviews, and more. That along with the full text make this one of the best editions available, especially at this remarkable price.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

In addition, it is also an enduring classic of literature. You may have seen every Dracula movie ever made, but you do not know the real Count Dracula until such time as you have read Stoker's book. Of course, unless you have been living under a rock, you will know the general plot line, but I assure you there is a wealth of rich material buried throughout the text that is sure to excite, intrigue, and surprise you. Perhaps the ending is a slight anticlimactic, yet I, having read this novel before and being quite familiar with the Count, read the final pages with bated breath, an anxious mind, and the sense of exhilaration that only the most talented of writers can induce. The most striking characteristic of Stoker's masterpiece is its solid grounding in late 19th-century Victorianism. This may prove frustrating to some readers. It is far from uncommon for the men in the tale to weep and bemoan the dangers threatening the virtuous ladies Lucy and Mina; virtue and innocence of women are hailed rather religiously. Mina, for her part, assumes the role then deemed proper for women, accepting and praising the men for their protection of her, worrying constantly about her husband rather than herself, shedding tears she must not let her husband see, etc. Yet, it is most interesting to see Mina rise above the circle of a woman's proscribed duties; she in fact becomes a true partner in the effort against Dracula, expressing ideas and conclusions that the men, with all of their wisdom, could not come up with themselves.Another thing I find interesting is the lack of a clear protagonist in Dracula. Technically, I suppose, Jonathon Harker is the protagonist, but Mina, Dr. Van Helsing, Dr. Seward, and the Count himself basically operate on an equal plane with him. It is Van Helsing who can be described as the anti-Dracula; he plans the moves by which he and his friends seek to thwart the Count's plans and destroy him; the second half of the novel can be compared to a chess match between two equally strong competitors. Minor characters such as the lunatic Renfield are also drawn clearly in our mind's eye by Stoker's incredible gift of characterization. While the format is unusual--the novel consisting fully of diary and journal entries by different characters--you cannot help but be drawn in closely to the group of heroic souls who pledge their very lives to one another as they take it upon themselves to combat a centuries-old evil. One could expound upon a number of themes in this novel (and many literary critics have certainly done so), so I will just quickly mention a few. Is this an erotic story? Certainly, to some extent, but there is certainly nothing overtly sexual in these pages. Is it really horrible? One might wonder how much blood one would encounter in this product of the Victorian age, but there are indeed some rather shockingly gruesome descriptions of events--nothing to shock modern readers but probably quite surprising to Stoker's contemporaries. There are also subtle overtones of religion in these pages. Aside from the Christian objects that have the power to keep vampires at bay, the most striking scene in the novel is Dracula's perversion of the Lord's Supper in his own most nefarious deed.I cannot recommend Stoker's masterpiece highly enough. The impatient reader may encounter sections that move too slowly than he/she would like, but such lulls are always wiped away by sudden spurts of activity and drama. Feminists will dislike the Victorian characterization of the women but can find unexpected pleasure in the strength and intellect of Mina. Literary critics will surely find in these pages a deep ocean of issues ripe for analysis. Of most importance, the common reader will find an absorbing storyline which may horrify him/her to some degree in places but which will certainly offer great rewards of enjoyment. I think most individuals would be won over completely by the great humanity of these characters and the unexpected richness and complexity to be found in this story of a fiend they thought they already knew.

Mcgeehan I have never read the novel "Dracula" but with it being absolutely free for my absolutely wonderful Kindle, I decided to give it a shot. The book is written entirely in correspondence from the characters; letters to each other, diary entries, telegrams, etc. While I did have to use my built-in Kindle dictionary many times with the big (or antiquated) words, the book flowed freely and was a surprisingly easy read. Certain scenes were downright chilling. What's truly amazing is Stoker's creation of such an incredible monster that has stood the test of time.

Our civilization is removed from the Victorian era. We think of it as somehow distant and quaint, and ourselves as modern. But when Bram Stoker published DRACULA in 1897, the Victorian era _was_ modern. Stoker meant to make the book more frightening than most books by bringing an ancient horror into a modern, anti-superstitious world. He uses typewriters and phonograph disks the way a modern writer would refer to the internet and e-mail. DRACULA's first readers might've looked out of their town or country houses and expected to see Dracula's gaunt figure emerging through the fog.He tells the story through a series of diaries, letters, clippings. Normally this is an unweildy method of storytelling, but in this case it is most effective. The novel is divided into three broad sections. In the first, young Jonathan Harker and Dracula have the stage almost alone. Though Harker's diary we learn details of his journey through eastern Europe to meet a Count who wants to travel to England, and Harker carries him certain important papers. Count Dracula's character comes across very strong and well-defined, and grows ever menacing as Harker slowly learns he is not going to be allowed back to England, but will become food for Dracula's vampiric harem. The second part of the book, set in England, deals with Mina Murray, who is going to marry Jonathan; Mina's friend Lucy; three men who are in love with Lucy; and a good-hearted but mysterious Ductch doctor, Abraham van Helsing. The bulk of this part deals with Lucy's mysterious disease, her decline to death, and her transformation into a vampire that her suitors must destroy out of love. Dracula appears only fleetingly through the book, but the reader knows what happens, and suspects the cause of Lucy's decline. In the last part, Jonathan, Mina, and Lucy's three lovers band with Dr. von Helsing in a pact to destroy Dracula before he can spread his contagion throughout England; and meanwhile, Dracula wreaks his vengeance on them for taking Lucy from him.Stoker uses many ways of approaching his subject. Occasionally the horror is direct; but once it is established, he makes it subtle, working behind the scenes, in a way that may be even more frightening. Though he also uses different voices, his prose is invariably fine. And as each character has to overcome his aversion to ancient superstition and face Dracula with a mind open to the fact that there's more in the world than science and technology and late-Victorian materialism can contain, the book becomes eerily meaningful for the twenty-first century.Modern purveyors of vampiric fiction dispense with the blatant Christian symbolism used to fight Dracula's ilk, such as a crucifix or sanctified host, or prayer. They also turn the evil of Dracula topsy-turvey and somehow invent sympathy for soulless monsters who view living humans as food. Stoker doesn't hesitate to show Dracula as an evil, totalitarian horror; as a contagion that must be eradicated; as an enslaver of women, like Lucy, and men, like poor Renfield. And Stoker has reason enough to realized that only Supernatural agencies could fight the supernatural. The saving Blood of Christ on the Cross, blood of which a soulless terror like Dracula cannot drink, is the most effective symbol for fighting and defeating this brand of evil. It was part of the novel's consistency that as the characters have to come to grips with the reality of ancient evil, they must also return to the symbols of good that they also have rejected in a narrow-minded embracing of the modern.Dracula, the strongest character in Victorian fiction, does not weaken himself by the need to be "understood" or "pitied". He will destroy or be destroyed. And the worst destruction that could happen to him would be mitigation.DRACULA may be the scariest book ever written; it's certainly the best of the classic horror stories. It's well-crafted and exquisitely constructed enough that it stands as a great novel even without genre pigeonholing.
