Dey's characters are interesting, settings vivid, and the great pace makes the book hard to put down. This is a fun story.

A novel that one reviewer described as similar to the type of books of "Michael Crichton and Dan Brown."BIGFOOT IN THE SNOW!The hunt begins for the bloodthirsty yeti. The beast has been killing climbers on one of the mountains of the Himalaya. A Native American (Ojibwe) mountaineer is hired to lead the expedition. Meanwhile a Buddhist monk/yogi known as the 'Sacrifist' is also sent on the mission to find the yeti. The horror and suspense build as more people die in this action-packed adventure to locate the lair of the Abominable Snowman.

My reading list is usually filled with non-fiction and public domain classics but I met Mason briefly at a school event and decided to try some fiction from a local author. I haven't read a book this fast since I don't know when; I started it Friday and was finished the next day, pretty much consumed my free time. The subject sounded interesting to me and it was. But it just got better. As different facets of the story were introduced, I became more and more hooked. The author worked in many interesting facts related to the setting to make it a little educational. I liked the dialogue between characters but I think this is one aspect that could have been expanded. I anticipated but was not disappointed by the ending and could see a possible setup for the trilogy. The short chapters moved quickly with something good happening in each. It kept my imagination engaged without getting bored. That would make this a good book to read on the go. I would like to see this as a movie.

If it were a movie, there are scenes where I would cover my eyes. The author lured me in with some of the wildest juxtapositions! There is the cultural trio: western / Nepali & Tibetan / Ojibwe. That kicks in right from the start, and I'm a total sucker for all that color, and the different ways of understanding the same events. Next is the contrast between what I would describe as "professional" classes: rich western climbers and their guides, sherpas and their village, in-your-face filmmakers, and finally the billionaire funding the whole fiasco. And then there's the contrast in the character of the characters. You've got loyal sherpas and gossipy ones who are scared silly, a sirdar who's a real leader of men, a climbing guide who loves his Nepali friends, a grieving father who is also warped by having fabulous wealth, a greedy filmmaker who is utterly without good judgment, a young Tibetan-Irish woman who throws herself into the fray without revealing her motives, and lastly -- the most intriguing person of all -- the Sacrifist, who has a role we can guess at, but his identity mystifies us.I was glad I took 3 days to read this novel, because I had some really startling revelations upon waking or in the middle of dinner, LOL! And it was fun to keep guessing what might happen to whom (sometimes I was right, but not often). So my suggestion would be: Try not to read it all at once.

The mysterious Yeti has never been given such depth of its own story until now. Not only is the premise interesting, the characters are rich and the story is engaging. The author's knowledge of mountaineering, philosophy and native cultures is impressive. What is a Sacrifist? The answer will keep you turning the pages. I finished it in 4 days and I'm looking forward to the next one!

The comfortable world of Martris Drayke, second son of King Bricen of Margolan, is shattered when his older half-brother, Jared, and Jared's dark mage, Foor Arontala, kill the king and seize the throne. Tris is the only surviving member of the royal family aside from Jared the traitor. Tris flees with three friends: Soterius, captain of the guard; Carroway, the court's master bard; and Harrtuck, a member of the royal guard. Tris harbors a deep secret. In a land where spirits walk openly and influence the affairs of the living, he suspects he may be the mage heir to the power of his grandmother, Bava K'aa, once the greatest sorceress of her age. Such magic would make Tris a Summoner, the rarest of magic gifts, capable of arbitrating between the living and the dead.

Minimal character development By Grey Sterling There is a lack of polish, and definitely the run-on sentences and comma splices are distracting, but not necessarily the author's fault (no copy editor?).The plot is formulaic, but interesting enough that it kept me reading until the end. It had the potential to be very good. However, I felt that it read a bit like a roleplaying game: Here is your mage, a prince on a quest. Here are your warriors, your rogue, your bard, your cleric. When Kiara makes her first appearance, you get a nearly-MarySue description of her hair color, the length of the hair, the way her hair moves when released from its bonds, etc. Many of the characters were undeveloped, especially the villians. I did not feel I knew any more about the bad guys by the end of the book than at the beginning. Tris' companions were so secondary and shallow that at times I forgot their names and/or roles. The vampire element was surprising. As in, it was a complete surprise how they popped up suddenly and unexpectedly. The first half of the book does not seem so much Tris' adventure as it does completing quests for experience points in something like World of Warcraft. "Collect X amount of stones for a cairn and deliver a silver piece to the farm at the edge of town. Speak to the innkeeper for your reward!"It struck me as being more on par with a very good fanfiction rather than a published novel. If there had been an already-established backstory, world, enemies, allies, and main characters, the minimalist descriptions and actions of the characters would have been acceptable. I felt the author could have fleshed it out into two or three more books.

84 of 107 people found the following review helpful. Paint By Numbers Fantasy By R. Andrew Meger Don't get me wrong, I like paint by numbers fantasy. A paperback novel telling the tale of a young hero who must right wrongs and save the kingdom is a great way to kill time on an airplane, commute, or relaxing on the beach. But only if the author is good at it.The author of 'The Summoner,' Gail Martin, is not very good at it.Given that this is PbNF, I didn't expect much when I picked it up on a whim recently. I expected the cardstock characters (evil usurper, dark wizard adviser, plucky princess, bardly bard, etc) and Hero's Journey plot checklist. I just didn't expect it to be so... inept. The book is too long, first of all. We all know where stories like this are going, so why spend so much time messing around? It's not like there's any character development or anything, so it feels like the author's just yanking our chains for a few hundred pages.Hint: If you're telling a paint by the numbers fantasy story, your page cap is 400. 300 would be better. 600 is fail. I mean, this is a series, right? Save some for book 2.The characters are cardboard cutouts of cardboard cutouts. If you have seen one fantasy movie, read one fantasy book, or played one game of D&D, you know them all instantly. The only interesting twist, the main character is like the kid form the Sixth Sense and can see ghosts, is reduced to a chore as he spends most his time whining about it.Hint: If you spend the more of a fight scene describing how your hero is shocked and aghast at killing a dude instead of describing the actual fight, you're doing it wrong.Hint: People don't like their characters to be willfully stupid. If the captain of the guard can't do anything about suspicious activity surrounding the king, then perhaps he shouldn't be a captain, huh?The setting is Standard Fantasy. Again, no problems there, but nobody needs the Geography 101 Info Dump or the Intro to Theology course we get once the quest finally gets underway.Hint: Don't introduce new cultures/faiths by telling us. Show them so as to make them more real for the reader.Hint: Of course, if your idea of showing involves long descriptions of boring rituals performed by standard Spunky Princess #2 (Now, with cute animal companion!), maybe you should just skip it all together.Bottom line is, this book would have been much better for what it is if it were half as long and twice as well written. That way reading 'The Summoner' by Gail Martin would be more rewarding and less like trying to eat a bag of marshmallows - too long, too safe, too sickly sweet.

22 of 28 people found the following review helpful. How did this get published? By Lee J. Eden Seriously, this book is miserable. The writing is amateurish, the plotting is... well, non existent, the characters are barely even two dimensional, and the whole thing is rife with so many cliches as to make it nearly unreadable.Gail Martin's understanding of feudal society, and politics for that matter, is so stunted as to make the 'intrigue' of the book play out as ridiculous. Another thing she can't seem to handle with any success is the numerous characters she tosses in, none of which are distinct enough for them to be told apart with any clarity. Hell, at one point she actually splits the party in half with no more mention than "they disappeared after the fight". Those 'missing' characters are not mentioned again, at all, until many chapters later when the group is reunited. Then we are informed how the characters were worried and tormented by their concern for their missing friends.Gail? Don't TELL us this stuff. SHOW us.

By Ingrid Stephanie Jordan Title : Tattered Loyalties Talon Pack NovelAuthor : Carrie Ann RyanReviewed by : Stephanie Jordan☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆I loved the The Redwood Pack but after reading this I'm torn, because I like both Series. Ms. Ryan has me definitely hungry for Book Two.Brie Jamenson knew since she was a child who her mate was. But she kept it to herself, first off she was to young now and he wasn't from her Pack. If that wasn't bad enough there is no way The Fates got it right they had to of made a mistake, she was a submissive and he was an Alpha.Gideon Brentwood was Alpha of the Talon Pack for thirty years now, ever since he killed the old Alpha who was out of his mind and evil, the man who should have protected him but didn't, his father. The Packs were coming into change lots of change, but are they ready? I was gifted this ARC for an honest and truthful review.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. This is why I love this Author By HannahPilar Ok when I say that everytime Carrie Ann Ryan releases a new book I have a new favorite, I'm not kidding. Tattered Loyalties is a fantastic start to the Talon Pack series and this particular story arc. Brie and Gideon are a perfect match even if they don't see how they are.The Redwood Pack has known three decades of peace and the Talon Pack has had three decades of picking up the pieces from their last sadistic leader. Together with the Redwood pack they try and make an escape route and alternative plans for the eventuality of humans finding out about the existence of their kind. Gideon has done a wonderful job of bringing the pack up to modern times and mending the wounds that were left. Not everyone agrees with him. The Elders, one in particular Shannon, are stuck in the past and want things to go back to the way they were and will set Gideon up for failure. Shannon has convinced the rest of the Elders that Gideon must take a mate in order to run his pack successfully and if he won't they will force a mating on him with a power hungry female she can easily control. Little did they know Gideon already found his mate.Brie has known for fifteen years who her potential mate is and has resisted it by avoiding him at all costs but when her uncle requests her presence for a meeting with the Talons she know he time has come. Brie is a submissive wolf, submissive wolves like much like the Omega can help calm down strong wolves but they are calm personalities and avoid conflict; Brie won't fight unless she has too. Brie knows as a submissive wolf she isn't strong enough for Gideon she isn't the alpha he needs to help run his pack but fate has decreed otherwise. Gideon knows immediately what Brie is and what she is to him, but as an alpha he was going to just ignore the connection until the elders gave him their ultimatum. Brie knows the politics of the pack and makes the decision that for the health and safety of the Talon Pack she will mate with Gideon. Together they are very sexually compatible (rwar) but it takes a while for Gideon to and Brie to learn about each other especially when it comes to Brie's strength. Them working together to find out just how perfect they are together is emotional and enjoyable, everything I love about Carrie Ann Ryan's writing is in this book. Everything starts to fall apart when a villain from the past shows up again and threatens all the hard work the two packs have worked for.I loved, loved, loved this book. It was a great introduction to the characters in the new pack and even if you missed Redwood Pack as a whole (you really are missing something great) it doesn't impact much this is a new story arc and everything you need to know about the past is summed up in a nutshell. I really am looking forward to Finn's book next.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Slowly but Surely! By Izza77 I'm slowly but surely falling for the Talons just as hard as I did for the Redwoods! Where we were thrown into knowing all the roles each Redwood had in their pack, it's nice to see theTalons steadily grow into it. Though it has it's definite downside it brings them back stronger and united.

The storyline and characters are so engaging, getting drawn into the story isn't even an option. You're getting sucked in. I loved how the main character, Greta was portrayed. She starts out as a normal college student with a seemingly normal life, and then she's suddenly thrown into a struggle that she's somehow the focus of. She finds out that she's not as normal as she thought, that the WORLD isn't as normal as she'd thought. She's angry, hurt, confused... Her reactions, her frustrations, her angry retorts... they solidify the character completely. Her protector is a mystery at first, other than telling her "I'm here to protect you." Such a short answer brings out those frustrations and angry retorts from Greta... exactly what one would expect if they were they in the same situation. I was a bit frustrated myself, so it makes what Greta is feeling easy to connect with. One of my favorite aspects of the book was that feeling of frustration, of only getting little bits and pieces of information. I found myself wanting to throttle the characters at some points. That's what makes the story so engaging, because you can honestly relate to the characters along the way. While not giving away any spoilers, I will say that Jaromir is a spectacular character. I love his inner struggle that comes out throughout the book, and when the darker side of him is set loose, you realize just why he kept such a tight hold on that darker side of him.The flow of the story is fast paced, and much of it focuses not only on the 'action' but incorporates the emotions of the characters throughout, which is one of the strongest aspects of the story. The characters aren't just going through the motions, they're feeling their way through them - and they do it in such a way that it's very easy to relate with the characters. The ending felt a bit abrupt. If this were a standalone novel, I would say that was the story's only drawback. However, in this case, that abrupt ending isn't a closure ending, but open-ended... letting the reader know there's more to come. And this reader is waiting for that next book impatiently, to see what's coming next!

You meet Greta, a college girl living with her mom. You may think she’s normal until she comes home to something in her kitchen. It used to be an old acquaintance, used to be. Now it was something else, something that Greta couldn’t explain. Before she can blink her eyes, her mother is dead and she is off with a man she doesn’t know.Finding out what’s going on turns out to be a challenge. Then Greta learned there was something strange about her too. Her world is turned upside down and Greta finds herself on the move from the Takers, who want her body. She is put to the test and tried to hold her own. Now I’m not giving away to many more details, but you need to read this book. It was a total thrill to read. Keeping me hooked on every page and now eagerly awaiting book 2.Lu Whitley is an amazing writer and has an amazing feel for telling a good story. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gripping Read. Not so happy ending for readers. By Phillip T Stephens The paranormal romance (PNR) genre rarely breaks out of rigidly defined formulas. The heroine, usually a human who may or may not have latent powers of her own, takes on the supernatural world only to get limerent* with one or many supernatural creatures (most often a vampire or werewolf). Quite often she becomes conflicted about this romance, but always succumbs to his otherworldly charms before kicking apocalyptic ass and saving the world.Lu Whitley's BloodMarked shakes off many of the formula's chains to deliver an original storyline without throwing her readers into completely unfamiliar territory. Her character, Greta Brandt, wakes up from a dream of normalcy into the nightmare of real life to face a monster wearing her mother's skin. The monster would claim her skin save for a last minute rescue by Jaromir Ragnarsson (who, readers will probably guess, is a vampire).Greta and Jaromir, or Jami, do end up under the sheets. Greta and Jami, as we should expect given the genre, spend pages feeling conflicted about their on-again-off-again daliance. But this is as far into the reader's comfort zone as Whitely will take them. Greta and Jami spend the rest of the book on the run from the monsters, or Takers, who have been after her since childhood.Greta learns, much to her dismay, that Jami saved her once before, when she was four-years-old the Takers took her father in Germany. Jami spirited her and her mother to California and put them in hiding. Only a chance photograph in her college paper gave her location away. Greta and Jami spend the rest of the novel as fugitives or captives, angry with each other and drawn to each other at the same time.Unfortunately, as Greta's sexual attraction to Jami grows, the more she feeds the vampire powers he wants to suppress. When the Takers lure him away and capture her, he unleashes those powers to find her.Whitley never lets the reader rest as she weaves conspiracy after conspiracy, betrayal after betrayal into BloodMarked. Personally I find PNR boring as a rule, precisely because I haven’t found a series since Laura Hamilton that didn't follow her formula almost exactly. Whitley made taking the chance on her book worth it.BloodMarked is far from a perfect reading experience, however:Formatting made it difficult for me to follow the storyline. Whoever Whitley hired to convert the book to Kindle format forgot to include any symbol (or at least line breaks) noting shifts between different passages. As a consequence disjointed passages flowed into each other as though one moment flowed into the next. Many times I figured out what had happened, but at others, such as Chapter 7, where Jami is about to cut his hair and suddenly Greta goes into a dream state, I became completely confused. The time disruptions during the rest of the chapter became so disorienting that when I began reading Chapter 8 I wondered (and I still wonder) if an entire chapter hadn't been left out between the two chapters.Spoiler alert:Readers who want the book to end with a win before launching into the second book of the series will not enjoy this finish. BloodMarked closes like the end of the first act (think Empire Strikes Back) with the characters still in danger and facing even greater trials in book two.To be honest, I'm one of those readers. As much as I love the book, and I love BloodMarked, and I will continue to push it, I still think books in series should end with something that feels like a win for readers. At least the book the launches the series. You can let the arch nemesis escape. You can show the clouds looming on the horizon. But the lovers should be reunited at least for a moment in the last ray of sunlight before the meteor strikes.__________________________________*Limerence is a phrase that became popular in the eighties, especially with one of my girlfriends who suffered extreme commitment issues. It means a strong infatuation or obsession, often mistaken for love, that disappears only when distance and time intervenes. True limerence requires a platonic obssession but, thanks to the book "Love and Limerence" by Dorothy Tennov, that aspect flew out the window with the commitment phobic limerent relationships of the eighties and the ensuing popularity of PNR where real human boyfriends could never hope to compete with the muscular frames and other projected Freudian and Jungian aspects of supernatural lovers.Phillip T. Stephens is the author of Cigerets, Guns & Beer and Raising Hell.

But that might be from transferring to kindle form I've seen it in all the books I've read on my kindle. All the best,Veda Connolly

The family seemed a little undeveloped but good. Having been in gettysburg helped. I wonder about those that haven't. Part of me wishes that they would have visited the battlefield present day.

But it needs serious editing and work on dialogue, as well as the time travel itself. It is highly unlikely that any phrase or expression is immediately going to make people assume they are time travelers. The reaction of Tom to the family also does not ring true.

It’s Book 2 of The Pillars of Reality, the exciting epic fantasy series written exclusively for Audible by New York Times bestselling author Jack Campbell!

Someone wants to kill Mari, a young Steam Mechanic in the Guild that controls all technology. She has learned that her world of Dematr is headed for a catastrophe that will destroy civilization, and that Mages really can alter reality for short periods. Someone also wants to kill Alain, a young Mage who has learned that Mechanics are not frauds as his Guild teaches, and that Mechanic Mari is the only person who can prevent the oncoming disaster.

Narrowly escaping death, the Mechanic and the Mage stay alive thanks to their combined skills, an alliance never before seen. But it becomes clear that both of their Guilds, the most powerful forces in the world, are trying to destroy them. Other powers, like the great Empire and a mysterious secret Order, also seek to kill or capture them, using every weapon from Imperial Legions to Mage-created trolls, dragons, and rocs.

Trying to survive and learn the truth about their world so they will know how to save it, Mari and Alain realize that the answers they seek may lie in the dead city of Marandur. But Marandur is guarded by the legions that have sealed it off from the rest of the world for more than a century. Mari and Alain's only hope may rest with the unseen Masters of Marandur.

By AudioBook Reviewer The Hidden Masters of Marandur is the second book in an epic science fiction young adult fantasy series. Please listen to the first book as there may be spoilers here. Here we are rejoined with our favorite Mage and Mechanic only a few months after we left them in the first book. In pure Campbell style we get huge action and tension right away. Then the next third of the book is nothing but Alain and Mari reconnecting, exploring their feelings for one another and battling the internal and external conflicts with their relationship.Slowly Mari puts together what she must do, while it seems everyone wants her dead, and Alain follows to protect her. They are able to find members of their guilds that are willing to help them along their journey to discovering the truth. Secrets that have been hidden for so long there is almost no one left that knows what the truth really is.While there was only one or two more very exciting scenes. This book was almost nothing but Campbell crafting an intricate spiderweb of a story. Fleshing out many of the future players and exploring what once was. Making my mouth water for the next installment.Once again and no surprise, MacLoed Andrews delivers a stellar performance. He had many characters to deal with, yet somehow he managed to give every single one of them their own voice. Using different vocal ranges and accents to make it easy for the listener to differentiate them all with ease. This still time to get engulfed by this series before you feel like you will never catch up to the current book. If you enjoy young adult fantasy, you will not be disappointed.Audiobook provided for review by the publisher. Please find this complete review and many others at audiobookreviewer dot com[If this review helped, please press YES. Both strive to fit in and make strides in their respective guilds. Mari takes on every task required of her, until one day she is told she must travel to a war-torn area, on her own. Mage Alain is in a similar situation, having been assigned to protect a group of people, only to be targeted by other mages who are tossing around lightning. Mari & Alain unite forces once more and strive to come up with a solution to turning aside the storm they both sense is about to hit their world. They turn their eyes towards the long buried and forgotten archives of the long dead city Marandur.I absolutely loved Book 1 in this series and Book 2 did not disappoint, though I would be hard-pressed to say which one I enjoyed more. Mari and Alain have great chemistry and I love watching them try to figure out their relationship, as well as survive the numerous enemies they have gained. Alain is delving into long suppressed memories of family in order to regain his emotional side. He is also developing social skills, which adds some much appreciated humor even in the bleakest moments. Mari struggles a bit with an age-old prophecy concerning the possible ending to the world as they know it. If I have any complaint about this book, it is that sometimes Mari is a little too emotional. Also, she has a streak of jealousy that is a little ridiculous and isn’t fully resolved by the end of this book. I wasn’t a particular fan of this trait in her and felt it could have been less emphasized. That little complaint aside, the plot is rich with further developments. Both guilds have secrets, but they also have folks who want those secrets out. Plus there are the Dark Mechanics who we briefly glimpsed at the end of Book 1. So many folks want these two dead! So with great reluctance, the duo finally head off to Marandur only after they feel other possibilities have been exhausted. Now Marandur was not as expected. It was more complicated and what they found there could be a huge asset….if only they can get out alive. I really don’t want to spoil any of this for you, as all the Marandur scenes happen late in the book. Let me just say it was a bitch to get into and, even then, they were not safe. This book does a masterful job of weaving steampunky science fiction with philosophical fantasy. It’s an excellent combination and sets the bar high for the small, but growing, subgenre of science fantasy.Narration: MacLeod Andrews once again did a great job of Mari and Alain. He can totally cut all emotion from his voice when doing a Mage, and yet imbue Mari’s voice with so much emotion when she is frightened or angry. I especially like his voice for Mari as it is a bit throaty and it makes it so easy to picture her as a serious mechanic.

Good Thing There's No Assassin's Guild By Taylor Rand After several disastrous attempts on the lives of Mechanic Mari and Mage Alain, I began to think the Guilds’ hearts weren’t really in it. If they had truly wanted them dead, couldn’t the Masters have arranged an ‘accident’ while the two still lived in the Guild Halls? Fortunately, Marie’s pretty nimble and Alain’s cool in a crisis, so they’re able to evade and escape all sorts of dangers – magical and mechanical - to continue Jack Campbell’s lively YA story. There’s no denying it’s an exciting YA adventure mixing fantasy and science fiction. Campbell keeps the plot moving with dragons and rocs, steam engines and radio ‘far-talkers’, narrow escapes and mysterious motives. He knows how to keep the pressure at a high-level as the hunted couple search for answers. All the same, it is a YA story. There’s essentially only two main characters and it's hard to believe either could be in any real danger (from a sensible author). The repeated efforts to do away with either Mari or Alain are not exactly comical – they’re very well-written scenes – but, perhaps, we could have used more background setting, minor character and ‘bad guy’ points-of-view to widen the world creation.I’m enjoying this story. Jack Campbell’s talent for thrilling action is self-evident; from Alain’s battle with the Imperial mages to Mari’s quick-draw encounter with lost city denizens. My only concern is that given the plot's pace (we're barely into the story by the end of The Hidden Masters), the Pillars of Reality is going to be a five or six audiobook series. I like the story but that’s a steep investment.

What does it actually mean to be rational? Not Hollywood-style "rational," where you forsake all human feeling to embrace Cold Hard Logic. Real rationality, of the sort studied by psychologists, social scientists, and mathematicians. The kind of rationality where you make good decisions, even when it's hard; where you reason well, even in the face of massive uncertainty; where you recognize and make full use of your fuzzy intuitions and emotions, rather than trying to discard them. In "Rationality: From AI to Zombies," Eliezer Yudkowsky explains the science underlying human irrationality with a mix of fables, argumentative essays, and personal vignettes. These eye-opening accounts of how the mind works (and how, all too often, it doesn't!) are then put to the test through some genuinely difficult puzzles: computer scientists' debates about the future of artificial intelligence (AI), physicists' debates about the relationship between the quantum and classical worlds, philosophers' debates about the metaphysics of zombies and the nature of morality, and many more. In the process, "Rationality: From AI to Zombies" delves into the human significance of correct reasoning more deeply than you'll find in any conventional textbook on cognitive science or philosophy of mind. A decision theorist and researcher at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, Yudkowsky published earlier drafts of his writings to the websites Overcoming Bias and Less Wrong. "Rationality: From AI to Zombies" compiles six volumes of Yudkowsky's essays into a single electronic tome. Collectively, these sequences of linked essays serve as a rich and lively introduction to the science—and the art—of human rationality.

Ficke did a good job developing the plot, creating an exciting climax, and giving a hint of what may happen in the sequel. He has good ideas, a great imagination, and is knowledgeable of the story topic. I look forward to seeing more from Ficke as he pursues his dream and grows in his writing career.

By PD I'm not normally someone who reads the science fiction genre; however, I found this book to be both engaging and thought provoking. After the first few chapters I was completely hooked! This author skillfully draws you into a realistic accounting of a nuclear aftermath through the struggles, fears and ultimate bravery of a young girl, Charley. A cryptic message of hope from a dying stranger leads her to discover unique relationships and an incomprehensible destiny. Once you experience this novel, it WILL leave you changed, especially in light of many current events. You don't need to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy this book. Just be prepared for a great read that keeps you thinking long after the last chapter is finished!

It is a contemporary, fast paced tale that leaves the reader questioning how much could possibly come true. The story beings with a young girl, Charly, navigating survival in a nuclear winter. She meets a dying stranger with a mysterious message and then the adventure begins. Does Charly's courage change fate? The book is skillfully written with vivid descriptions and multiple themes, perfect for book club discussions. While some scenes are heartbreaking, others are lighthearted and hopeful. The story tugs at your emotions and intellect on many levels. I highly recommend this read.

The author takes us on a journey with her main character that is wonderful and chilling at the same time. The combining of humanity and the metaphysical is thought provoking, it left me asking questions of myself as these stories normally do. I think for me, the underlying message ......., well I'll let you decide for yourself what that underlying message is. I highly recommend this book. If it leaves you confused, wait a a little while and pick it up again, I don't think you'll be confused any longer.

Faasse I have had android phones before but was using an IPHONE 4 for the last 4 years when I received an LG4G Android and decided to switch carriers. As you well know there is a big difference between Apple and Android. I have found I really enjoy my Android phone better than the Apple (and I liked the Apple really well) because it has more things you can do with it and less proprietary. I wanted to learn more about my phone so I got this book and WOW I am impressed. Dummies books have been out for a long time and this 3rd Edition (2015) of Android Phones is really so easy to use and apply the information without a hitch. It definitely is a beginners book as well as for more advanced. Since it is a phone and a mini computer it has lots of tips on how to better use your phone for more efficiency and ease of dealing with calls and contacts while tons of information on apps and security and media as well as maintenence and troubleshooting. Fun book that to me is now a must.

Learn as little as you need--or as much; An accessible, readable reminder what a powerful tool our little "phone" (computer) is By Elisa 20 In the old days, it would have been laughable to think that you needed an entire book to use a telephone. But, times change, and today what we call a "phone" is really a hand-held computer that can make calls. The little computer we rely on and carry everywhere is a highly sophisticated and incredibly versatile tool. Books like "Android Phones for Dummies" remind you just how complicated and versatile a tool a "smartphone" is--and how few of us really bother to learn all the incredibly useful things that it can do for us.This is another well designed, well written "Dummies" book (really for smart people because despite the easy writing style and occasional bits of humor that mark this series, there is an awful lot to know and it takes patience to read through the directions and try them out). This book starts with the basics--making it a good book for anyone getting a smartphone (Android one) for the first time. But the best use is for someone who's had the phone for a while, does some of the basics already, but wants to know what all it can do--and how to quickly do it. There's the phone basics, of course, voice mail, texting, etc., plus using maps, taking photos/videos, playing music, using a variety of apps. Part IV then gets into customizing, working with apps, various other navigation and utilization instructions where you're doing things, not hard really, but thing that most people probably just don't know about. It winds up with the section of tips: "Ten Tips, Tricks and Shortcuts and "Ten Things to Remember". (The first thing I read in this book was actually the last page of that section--and, though randomly selected, it was very useful--how to take a screenshot. Didn't know it before, do now, in just a paragraph.. The tips in these two sections alone would make the price of the book worthwhile). You can start at Chapter One for the concepts and set up and go forward to keep building on what you know. Or just jump around to the things you know you want to do and skip the rest. Either way, this book is well explained, well illustrated and a fount of information. Definitely recommended.

This is the 3rd and current edition of this book.I tried other books to help me with my Note 4, but they assumed I knew more than I did. This book introduced me to the Android way of doing things and made it easy to understand!!! There are colored illustrations throughout the book. You can start from the beginning or jump to a specific topic, ie camera, widgets, maps, voicemail, being "digitally social." Whether you have a Note or a Samsung Galaxy, he makes reference to both of them. There is a great sense of humor woven through the explanations. I am so glad I purchased this book. I am finding my Android amazing!

Tyler Ballard was in prison when his son created a dreamworld called Foreverland, a place so boundless and spellbinding that no one ever wanted to leave. Or did. Now his son is dead, his wife is comatose and Tyler is still imprisoned. But he planned it that way. The final piece of his vision falls into place when Alessandra Diosa investigates the crimes of Foreverland. Tyler will use her to create a new dimension of reality beyond anything his son ever imagined—a Foreverland for the entire world. Danny, living outside of Spain since escaping the very first Foreverland, begins receiving mysterious clues that lead him to Cyn. They are both Foreverland survivors, but they have more in common than survival. They become pieces of another grand plan, one designed to stop Tyler Ballard. No one knows who is sending the clues, but some suspect Reed, another Foreverland survivor. Reed, however, is dead. Everyone will make one last trip back to Foreverland to find out who sent them. And why. INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR HOW IMPORTANT ARE NAMES TO YOU IN THIS BOOK. DID YOU CHOOSE THEM BASED ON SOUND OR MEANING? Almost all of my books have names with special meaning, some foreshadowing a big twist. In The Annihilation of Foreverland, Reed’s name was symbolic of his ability to tolerate suffering, bending in the face of gale forces but never breaking. WHERE DOES YOUR TOMORROW SPRING FROM? IN OTHER WORDS, HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE CRAZY WORLD? Sometimes, I can’t remember how the story started by the time I get to the end. The Annihilation of Foreverland started with the premise of identity. I wanted to write it as a YA book in the science fiction dystopia genre in a way that slowly unfolded as well as questioned who we are and explore our fear of death, and what we’re willing to do to avoid it. Like all of my stories, it does have a romantic angle mixed into the action. Because it should. GIVE YOUR BOOK THE BECHDEL TEST. IT HAS TO HAVE AT LEAST TWO (NAMED) WOMEN IN IT WHO TALK TO EACH OTHER ABOUT SOMETHING BESIDES A MAN. I failed because there’s only one female in The Annihilation of Foreverland. However, the young adult sequel (Foreverland is Dead) passes with flying colors since its mostly female characters that rarely talk about men. WHAT SORT OF BODY COUNT ARE WE TALKING HERE? The bodies die, but not necessarily the characters. Chew on that a second. DO YOU WANT YOUR TOMORROW TO MAKE IT BIG, AS IN JK ROWLINGS-BIG? WHY OR WHY NOT? Believe it or not, no. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to make enough cash to pay off this house and send my kids to college, but I’ll pass on fame and fortune. Anonymity is a blessing. YOU CAST YOUR CHARACTERS FOR A MOVIE. WHO MAKES IT? In The Annihilation of Foreverland, I only casted two characters in my head while I was writing it. The Director is Jeff Bridges and Mr. Jones is Anthony Hopkins. It was like watching a movie as I wrote. HAVE YOU WRITTEN IN ANY OTHER GENRES BESIDES YA DYSTOPIAN? WHAT DREW YOU TO YOU THIS GENRE? I’ve been fascinated by consciousness, identity and what this all means since I was young. I would read my grandfather’s science fiction books with elements of artificial intelligence and alternate realities and wonder what happened when they died? I suppose that’s why all of my writing deals with the big mysteries of life in one way or another. In a way, I write for my own exploration, in a sort of thought experiment approach, pulling apart our identities, exploring what makes us who we are. If I lost my memories, would I still be me? If I had my body parts replaced with synthetic replications, at what point would I not be me? Do I even need a body? What am I? Since all of my books have a romantic element, I thought I would write a romance novel. Halfway through the novel, I found myself thinking about the next project—a dystopian idea. So 40,000 words in, I scrapped the romance novel and got back to what I love. Science fiction.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It will mess with your mind and leave you mindblown By Genie What I've loved from the very beginning of this series is the overall concept - it's so fascinating. The virtual reality which seems so much like the real world, and how it affects those involved in it is something that definitely reminds me of Inception (so if you loved that movie, you're sure to love this book). However, despite that similarity, Ashes of Foreverland, and the previous installments - all take that idea even deeper. There are multiple POV's, though all written in third person which allows for such poignant prose to shine."Is the physical world any more legitimate than Foreverland? Under what pretense is physicality the gold standard? That was the question he begged all of humankind to answer."This book asks the question - at what point does science take things too far? When is the reality of humanity more important? Where is that line and what happens if you were to cross it? There's a definite existentialist vibe coming through here, and it almost feels philosophical, if you want to take it that way. How Danny Boy, Alessandra and Cyn were impacted upon by the works of Tyler Ballard and his wife Patricia is multifaceted and endlessly intricate. When you're dealing with such topics as the mind and how perceptions of reality combined with that 'nothingness' which you could fall into is so captivating. I also really liked how this picked up on Tony Bertauski's other Halfskin series (and the fourth 'Foreverland' novel will combine these two series together fully.)"Time was the god that meted out each grain with methodic timing and refused to sell more. Time was a cruel god that promised eternity. But delivered only the past."There's also, as always, some fantastic mystery/thriller elements here to keep those pages turning. From hidden messages in endless parcels written with signature green ink, to characters who turn out not to be who you thought they were - it's all here and left me going WOW. One thing to remember with these novels is expect the unexpected and trust no one. That being said, there were a few surprises where some of the people who you perhaps thought were bad weren't after all."The ceiling swirled into the sky, the walls fell apart. There was no sensation of travel, no illusion of space. The needle's kiss."FINAL THOUGHTSThe characters in this books have their minds messed with, and just reading this will probably do the same to you (in the best possible way of course). If you're a sci-fi or Inception fan who and looking to be mindblown, then I'd definitely recommend this!

Ashes, Ashes, All Fall Down By DrPat If you haven't read the first two books in the trilogy, this review may contain SPOILERS."Annihilation" was about boys on a paradise-island shutting down the lure of Foreverland to avoid being severed from their bodies. "Dead" had girls escaping from their cold concentration camp to evade the same fate. Now in "Ashes of Foreverland," those who got out of their prisons are beginning to wonder if Foreverland is still waiting for them somewhere. A journalist, Allesandra, has started to investigate the crimes of the cabal that organised Foreverland, and part of her story is an interview with Tyler Ballard, in prison for life for his original Foreverland experiments, the ones that eventually killed his son and hospitalized his wife. What Alessandra discovers brings her entire world into question:* If Ballard is in prison, why does everyone around him—including his guards and the warden—do his bidding?* Why has his comatose wife Patricia been moved into the same building where there are ongoing Ballard-style dream experiments using animals?* What draws Alessandra so strongly to this building, to the dream-state lab?* Who are the Foreverland escapees, Danny and Cyn, and what are they to Alessandra?* Who is the mysterious doctor-director of the dream-state lab?As Ballard works to create a world-wide Foreverland, Alessandra fights to find a path through an increasingly confusing world that may not be as real as anyone—Ballard, Danny, Cyn, or Alessandra herself—thinks.Together, the three novels of this trilogy present a powerful statement about reality and the lure of dreams. The "Foreverland Boxed" set was my first encounter with Bertauski, and I will definitely be looking for more of his work.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. WE MUST GO DEEPER! BWAAAAAAAHHH By PSW Disclosure: I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.Sometimes, at the conclusion of a great story, you just sit back and say "damn".The three Foreverland stories are very different, but all revolve around the sinister paradise of Foreverland. "Ashes of Foreverland" takes the ideas and momentum of the first two stories and goes a bit mental, in a good way."Ashes" is very layered, weaving in and out of realities and in and out of story-lines. We see some familiar faces, and some new faces, and some faces that might be familiar or might not be. It also weaves in some elements of Tony's other books, which is quite interesting.Things I liked:• Lots of craziness - Everything was on edge all the time, didn't let up the whole book• Character Growth - Danny and Cyn really grow up during the course of this book. I think they learn a lot about themselves as they fight through the story.• Ending - The ending of "Foreverland is Dead" made me go "ahhhh what was that?!?". I had a similar reaction to the end of "Ashes", but in a very different way. Very fitting.Things I didn't like:• Too much stuff - I did feel like there were a lot of ideas shoved into this story, maybe a few too many.• The fate of some characters - No spoilers but I didn't really like the way some characters from earlier books were dealt with towards the end. But, I guess, it was fitting for the tone of the story.Final thoughts:If you liked the first two stories in this series, you will love this story. It is a fitting end (?) to the Foreverland Saga; it will confuse you for a while, it will make you second-guess where the characters are, and it will make you go "hmmm, oh....damn". I highly recommend "Ashes of Foreverland", and, of course, the preceding Foreverland stories.
