3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good characters & plot but the ending ruined it all By Luke Thoroughly enjoyed the first two books. Good character development. Enjoyable plot. Then 90% of the way through the last book the author throws it all away. The whole ending felt like he needed to wrap it up and he did it with a bang. Perhaps a better characterization would be with a flop. Hated the ending. Ruined the whole series. I can't remember the last time I was so appalled at how the author ended a story.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The ending was disappointing By Vickie K It seemed like midway through book 3 that the author kinda gave up. I can't say much more without spoiling the story, so I will say this - what took 2 1/2 books to develop came crashing down in a hot mess in the final chapters. But I do think it's still worth the read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. ~~Consequences and a Huge Double Cross~~ By Off Grid..and Loving it! The conclusion to this series brings the reader full circle with all of the loose ends tied up. I won't say nicely as two parts near the ending left me shaking my head. After thinking about those two scenarios, I did conclude that both were necessary and just for the state our world was in by that period in time. The consequences of an individual's actions comes to mind when I think about this story. So many instances in this book revolve around actions whether good or bad. One small portion paraphrased states that morality does not equal intelligence. The author hit the nail on the head directly with this one. One double cross by one character leads to a real catastrophe. And, this was dictated by personal revenge. All in all, an interesting read which covers a lot of territory within the US. Decisions made by a few affect many is the best manner I can describe it. I also found the author's note at the conclusion to be spot on in regards to what the future might hold for humans. Most highly recommended.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Lindy Zart is a keeper! By M. L. Stephens I love discovering new authors and I'm glad to say that this one is a keeper!I read this book without reading the synopsis because sometimes you just have to go for it. I didn't have the slightest clue as to the storyline but let me say, "Wow." I was pleasantly surprised. From the hallways of a small town school, to the top secret facilities where strange things occur, Ordinary takes the reader on a journey unlike any other.I immediately connected with Honor's need to protect and care for those around her and caught myself wishing her in and out of situations. The desire to learn Christian's fate kept the pages turning, while Ryker's confusion made me want to slap sense into him. Isaac's internal struggle instantly captivated me and made him one of my favorite characters.I look forward to reading more Lindy Zart!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amazing! By BEX Reviewer: BrittanyRating: 5 out of 5 FairiesUpon reading the synopsis of this book I thought I might like it. Once I finally started reading it, I was utterly confused. The synopsis didn't match up with like the first four chapters! What I was reading was enjoyable, but not what I expected.I love Honor as a character. She's so kind, mature, and constantly concerned with others around her. As stated in the book many times, she lives up to her name. She is definitely honorable. The fact that she is constantly standing up for people who are being mistreated just made me love her even more. When she went to Christians home to check on him, I was in awe. She truly cared about others, even when she had places to be. Even with his mother treating her like she did, she continued to be concerned. She's gonna be a special UDK. I just know it.Ryder. Ryder. Ryder. You evil little man you. I knew something wasn't right when he met her in the restroom. The dialogue they had screamed creep! And then the fact that he was constantly monitoring her and finding reasons to interact with her, only screamed desperation even more. He's a cold-hearted man, and I think he's gonna try to turn Honor cold-hearted as well. Good luck with that one buddy.Nealon is a confusing person. He has mood swings worse than a hormonal teenager. Seriously! In the beginning he's seems to have a heart and then BAM! outta nowhere he becomes cold and starts calling Honor by her last name. And he screams those horrible, hateful things at her. He's got a heart and it shows at times. But he also knows how to appear cold. I'm sure he's had a rough past and that's what made him that way, but sheesh! Lighten up a little mister.I gotta give Honor kudos. She is one heck of a fighter. When they come for her once she had started the transformation she was not going with them. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Once she was finally captured and started her training she gave it her all. She read what she was supposed to, did her physical training (regardless of whether or not Ryder was unwelcomed by her side), and still found a way to remain who she is. She refuses to change into the cold-hearted people that she is surrounded by. And thank goodness for that. I think she's gonna be Christians savior. And on that note...WHAT THE HELL, RYDER?!?!?!And talk about a cliffhanger. When I saw the words to be continued, I thought my eyes were going to pop outta my head. I was. SO. not ready for it to end. And now I'm absolutely dying for the next one. PLEASE!!! I'm begging you. Put me outta my misery, Lindy Zart. Please. I NEED to know what happens next....Because of that bloody cliffhanger, I'll bite hook, line, and sinker. 5 stars because I'm as addicted as...well...as an addict lol.Disclosure: This book was received from the author in exchange for an HONEST and not necessarily positive review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Something borrowed something pretty darn good By J.L. D. I borrowed Ordinary (The Anything But Series Book 1)by Lindy Zart from a friend. So I don't own it.I don't usually read zombie stories. So, it's a good thing this isn't really a zombie story. In this world where Honor is there are the UD's and the UDK's. They are both the product of a virus that's been accidentally let loose on the world years ago .(I take it from the story that Accidentally is a debatable term.) It has manifested itself in two forms, those who are the undead(UD's) and those who can control, contain and eliminate the undead(UDK's).Or is that true? It's no wonder Honor has doubts and the inability to trust anyone when she's lived a life that's been a completed lie. It becomes even worse when discovering that her mother has been in on the lie all this time. It will be no help that there are a lot more revelations coming her way that she most likely will find hard to swallow.Honor is an ordinary teen with the usual friends and a few undesirables around her. It turns out that the undesirables, Ryder and Natasha, are part of the UDK's and are there to help integrate her into thier ranks so that she can help control the UD's. The problem with that is that one of the UD's is someone she knows and though not well acquainted with, she likes.Christian is her age and in her class and he's just manifest his active virus at the same time that Honor has. It's in part, because she saw him undergoing the affects that she was noticed by the other UDK's, though she's apparently already on the watch list.Drawn into the whole mess against her will she attempts to maintain her own code of moral conduct despite the pressure that's being applied by those who are attempting to paint the UD's as something horrible and mindless. Despite the dangers involved she'll have to make a stand and do what she thinks is right. The story seems a bit weak on demonstrating where the character is now and what needs to be done to reach where she'll be at the end. But, that's because it's more a story of how despite the evidence and the odds she attempts to maintain who she is throughout.I like Ordinary and am looking forward to hearing the rest of the story. There are at least four characters dealing with conflicted lives. It will be interesting to see which ones work it all out and make it to the end.J.L. Dobias

When a crew member mysteriously disappears during an historic mission to Venus, Captain Brian Fletcher and his crew are baffled and afraid. Earth’s hostile sister planet had already been difficult, but advanced technology made the carefully planned mission go as smoothly as possible. Still, there were too many unexplained events that had half the crew joking that the planet has “heat gremlins” and the other half wondering if the planet is haunted. A monumental discovery at the dig site will change the future of space travel and provides possible clues as to what might have happened to the missing crew member. A rapidly developing threat will cut the mission short and Fletcher will have to make an impossible decision and time is running out.

A crew has gone to Venus on a study mission. As they explore, one of their own goes missing under suspicious circumstances (what other ones COULD there be on as harsh a planet as Venus?). There is a need to leave, but they all want to find their missing crew member. After finding some amazing clues to the planet and the disappearance, the Captain makes a brave decision that risks his very life.I loved the mystery and characters! I could not put it down and am looking forward to the second installment from this series!!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a great book By Michelle@Book Briefs 3.5Bound is the first in the new adult paranormal romance series of the same name. I really enjoyed Bound. I thought it was a great mixture of atypical romance, lots of paranormal creatures, curses, and magic. Yes, there is a lot going on in this book. AM Hudson kept revealing new layer after new layer as the story went on. I wouldn't really call them twists, but I felt like the plot just kept getting more developed and more complex as the story evolved. It was kind of a neat story telling technique. And I loved that while Bound had a very strong romance element, it was totally unlike any romance I have been reading. Ric and Lora are not like YA and NA couples. Not at all. You will have to read the book to know what I am saying because I don't want to ruin the story. But there is no insta love in this one. Ric and Lora are a series long work in progress kind of romance. And I am really digging that about them. A lot! After I was done reading Bound, I found out that Lora's parents have a whole series devoted to their story. I had no idea! I don't know how much it will benefit you to read their story first since we never actually met her parents in Bound, but we did see them through phone calls. I kind of liked starting with Bound first before reading her parents series because like Lora, I was kept completely in the dark with what she was and what the mystery surrounding her and her family was. And if I had read the other series first, I might have known too much to fully enjoy Bound. Maybe not, though? I would be curious to see reader's thoughts that read Lora's parents series first.Bound was a good read. It took a while for the story to initially get going. It wasn't a slow start per say. I thought the book moved at a consistently moderate pace, but I felt like the story took a while to pick up. And there were various minute intricacies of the story that I didn't love, but overall, I thought Bound held my attention enough and was a fun enough read that I will for sure be continuing on in the series. And I really want to give A.M. Hudson's other series a read. I think I will enjoy them. Fans of New Adult paranormals and fans of paranormals that involve a whole host of creatures, the Bound series would be a great match for you.*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

By Stacie's review I received an ARC of Bound from Author AM Hudson in exchange for an honest review, and I have to say this book did not disappoint, and I will recommend this book to anyone looking for a book you can really fall in love with, I absolutely LOVED......it! :)The story is based around Elora, who is a character from AM Hudson's Dark Secret Series, I was extremely pleased to see this is a stand-alone book, while having previously read Dark Secrets would definitely help understand who everyone is, it's not a requirement as A.M. does a fantastic job of bringing the reader into the story line without having to have read Dark Secrets. (I personally loved Dark Secrets and would definitely recommend that series to anyone as well)In Bound Elora is experiencing some things that make her search out answers and she amazingly finds quite a bit of answers on her own, and Elora handles everything with amazing strength and rather than getting angry at the secrets that have been kept from her, she understands why they've been kept from her and she doesn't allow circumstances to change her.I loved how she was so strong and didn't do the whole poor me routine when she found things out, she takes it all in stride and is like "ok not a problem let's deal with it."Elora's BFF Ali is quite funny, as well as Ric, her new friend and love interest. There are so many laugh out loud moments in this wonderful book, I loved reading the snarky banter back and forth.I love also that this book doesn't end on a cliffhanger, it does continue the story in the next book but it is a stand-alone full novel.I will anxiously be looking forward to reading the rest of this series and will definitely recommend this book and series to anyone looking for a wonderful laugh out loud, fall in love with all the characters book! :)A big thank you to A.M. Hudson for writing this wonderful book and allowing me the pleasure to be one of the first readers, this review is my honest opinion and was in no way influenced by the author or anyone else! :)

By Kendra Gaither Having loved the Dark Secrets Series, I knew I would love this new series as well, but I had no idea just how much! You wouldn't have to read the original to be able to pick this up and completely enjoy it and not be lost either, but it does make all the little extra bits seem like a little inside secret.Elora is living in Australia, working for Mike, her mom's best friend. She's young and having fun, not ready to settle down, and slowly beginning to enjoy the back and forth banter between her and Ric, while she helps lost ghosts find peace in her off time from the cafe she works at.Knowing nothing about her true heritage, or Ric`s true life, Elora soon finds herself in a lot of danger and a lot farther in the supernatural world than she ever really imagined, though there were those three years when she was little that she was convinced her dad was a vampire. And why is Ric asking if her real surname is Knight?Oh and I just love that it's not so sweetly ya too! It's fun and sexy and so normal!

I believe he is one of our greatest living authors. And this one rates right up there with his best. Complex characters in a fun, interwoven plot, excitement, action and a very satisfying ending. In many ways, Dave Duncan's greatest skill is the creation of exotic worlds and cultures, and that skill comes alive in this book.

By Paula Among fans of fantasy novels, the readers who will like this best are those who want their storytellers to consider alternatives to non-stop combat scenes. Duncan certainly knows when to use combat, but he doesn't indulge in non-stop fighting at the expense of character development or world-building. Among fans of Dave Duncan novels, those who liked his earlier pair of novels about the storyteller Omar will be pleased, as this novel hits some of the same tone.

A much-anticipated second edition to this classic practice-building text.

Building Your Ideal Private Practice, a best-seller in its genre, is now fully revised after its original publication in 2000. Much has changed for therapists in private practice over the past fifteen years, including the widespread encroachment by insurance and managed care into the marketplace, the density of new therapists as over 600,000 therapists nation-wide try to stay viable, and the role of the Internet in marketing services. The revision of Building Your Ideal Private Practice is a comprehensive guide, updated with six new chapters and targeted for therapists at all stages of private practice development. It covers the essential how-to questions for those starting out in practice and explains the common pitfalls to avoid. For those already in practice, worried about profitability in an age of increasing competition, the author offers informed strategies such as the best way to create websites and other online marketing to find clients, and then goes further to explain how to retain the new breed of fickle clients who shop for therapists online, but are hard to satisfy. Other new chapters support veteran therapists edging towards retirement, including how to sell a therapy business for a profit or whether to stay working solo or expand into a more lucrative group business model. The revision comprises a complete, easy to use and fascinating business plan that shows therapists not just what to do, but also who to be in order to succeed. It adds depth, up-to-date information and a wealth of strategies to the original book, often referred to as the “bible” for therapists in private practice. Like the original, the revision conveys the author’s experience, optimism and warmth as she presents case examples, checklists and exercises to make the business advice come alive. Whether you have insurance-based or a fee-for-service practice, this book will help you thrive.

Building Your Ideal Private Practice: A Guide for Therapists and Other Healing Professionals, by Lynn Grodzki

Review “Grodzki helps us create a blueprint for a successful practice, regardless of the stage of our career. . . . For those who read the first edition of this book, this second edition includes six new chapters as well as various updates to cover issues that have emerged over the last fifteen years. . . . [A]pproachable and engaging. She incorporates personal experiences as well as anecdotes from her workshops and private consulting, and she offers helpful exercises. . . . [A] well-written and useful book.” (PsychCentral)“This book is filled with useful information and it is extremely well written. I recommend it for any therapist starting a private practice.” (The Milton H. Erickson Foundation Newsletter)“I found Building Your Ideal Private Practice an inspiring, relevant, intelligent, and practical resource that had me excited about what I can do with my own private practice. . . . Unlike some other ‘set up your business’ books I have read, this guide speaks to therapists in their own language . . . . I would like to see this as compulsory reading for every graduating professional in our field―helping new clinicians avoid unnecessary confusion, pain, and even financial loss through the recognition that they are as much business people as they are healing professionals.” (The Neuropsychotherapist)“With its personal preface, instructions, examples, anecdotes, exercises, tips, pre- and post-test, and other resources, this edition of Building Your Ideal Private Practice is relevant, timely, and helpful. As Grodzki mentions, it would be an effective tool for psychologists, counselors, life coaches, and other ‘therapists.’” (Somatic Psychotherapy Today)

Just by reading this book I became optimistic about my practice and it began to fill. Each chapter gave me ideas I never thought of before. It helped me work smarter - with less effort, much more pleasure. By the time I finished this book I was trying to decide whether to raise my rates or start a waiting list, and I was seeing IDEAL clients, taking no HMO's, charging more than other psychiatrists in my area, and looking forward to going to work each day. This book blends business with integrity and taught me to value myself, my practice and my clients. I recommend it to ANYONE in the health care field. It made it so easy, and helped me to confront business aspects I hadn't been paying attention to. And she gives so may real life examples, it feels do-able. This book is worth a years' worth of high quality business consulting. I recommend it to any of my clients who have private practices from yoga instruction to massage therapists, and to all my friends in the psychotherapy field. I have never made so much money or felt so good about my practice in my life. She even makes talking to clients about money something I can now do in a way that feels both appropriate and respectful - to me and to them. What I have learned has already netted me literally thousands of dollars. I have never written a book review before, but I have to express my gratitude in some way, and this is my attempt to let others know that with the suggestions, tips and encouragement from this book, it is not only possible to make a living doing therapy, but to build an IDEAL practice without having to contract with any insurance companies. What a God-send of a book.

Last year without knowing why, my client count began to drop off. I got worried. A colleague in my peer supervision group swore by this book. (Her practice stays full all the time.) I think it is the most helpful book on practice-building and marketing for therapists I have ever read. The information in the book is really useful and solid. But more than that, the tone of the book is so calming and inspiring. The author clearly knows her topic, and she finds ways to explain exactly what steps you need to take to become more profitable and grow your practice. Unlike other non-therapist marketers, she understands the mind of a healing professional and the mental shifts in thinking that introverts like me need to go through in order to follow through on networking or getting more boundaries in place for my billing policy. On the back of the book, one reviewer (who was a social worker of the year!) said the book should be the bible of every clinician. I agree. I keep it on my bedside table, and when I can't sleep because I am worried about my practice, I open up this book and feel inspired. Her new workbook is great as well.

It provided me with the necessary information to make me feel confident when I finally made the decision to begin building my own practice. It not only explained the business aspects but also described how to make me personally satisfied with what I was doing. I call this book my "Private Practice Bible" and I am sure you will too once you read it for yourself. Good luck with your dreams. This book helped me make mine come true.

Mona Jones has been on the run all her life without really knowing why. Her parents were murdered, and now, at twenty-one, her uncle and protector is dead too… This dramatic chain of events compels Mona to spend time amid a Welsh-speaking community in Ynys Môn, also known as Anglesey. It is here that her druidic ancestry begins to emerge, identified more quickly by those around her. Attacked by an enemy druid, Mona quickly finds herself at the centre of an intense druid civil war. Branded with 'the mark', she unleashes her power, only to discover she also has a terrible weakness. Mona quickly finds herself drawn to the warrior Cai, but they are soon separated when the community's fleet is lured out to sea by the threat of an Irish attack. With the Welsh druids convinced she is a spy working amongst them, Mona's uncontrollable power explodes for a second time. The Welsh druids must decide if Mona is their saviour or their destroyer. A fast-moving, contemporary action story, Hiraeth is a trilogy inspired by the ancient Celtic texts of the Mabinogion and the Ulster Cycle. The story has been woven into an epic power struggle, which straddles myth, Celtic identity and adventure.

By Senlui The reader is thrown into the action straight away, and rarely do you find yourself so emotionally moved for characters that you have just met as in "Hiraeth: a mark". From then on, you follow the main character, Mona, as she is abandoned in a community that is seemingly hostile to her. Intrigue and suspense fill the pages, when you learn of what the community really is all about.Liz manages to blend Celtic myth of the Mabinogion into a contemporary world in a way that is not "New Age" or awkward. The characters are all well developed and interesting, and the settings are well researched. The story reminds me more of a science fiction than a fantasy book, and there is nothing fluffy about the novel. Indeed it is sometimes hard-hitting and difficult, but these scenes are certainly necessary and not gratuitous. After reading "a mark", I certainly can't wait to get hold of the next part to find out what happens. The book ends at a point when the storm is brewing, and leaves the reader eager to see the result of the events of the story so far.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Leaves its Mark! By Leon N Robins A really good read. An action-packed start followed by intrigue as the main character, Mona, begins to learn more about the life she has been born into. It is hard to pin down to a genre - probably fantasy adventure is the nearest I can come up - but its more nuanced than that with its present day setting. The author has created a believable world of ancient Druids surviving in the modern day and on the fringes of Celtic society. Forget about your white robes and hippy stuff - this has warriors, battles, treachery and a community under siege. It is ancient traditions versus modern technology. Its kick-ass heroine has (literally) a killer touch - though she's not always the brightest. The relationship/love story between Mona and Cai is gripping and underpins the narrative - whether it will survive their forced separation is left unresolved in this book! Well worth a read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I've read it 4 times already, & will read again! By Lisa I loved reading this! The timeframe within the story is relatively short, however, the development of the characters and their locations blossom tremendously throughout, making you feel that you've lived a lifetime with them. There is action, comedy, suspense, geography, history, Welsh, martial arts, magic, drama, life, death, coming of age, love, and intimacy. In addition, the author does a fine job of describing the scenery. Whether it's a dreary old room, a car, pasture, or some of the magnificent sights around the coast of Britain, I truly felt like I was right there in each place. The reader is drawn in right from the first page, none of this 'oh, once you get into the second chapter it really gets good.' I feel this review does not do the book enough justice. I am counting the days until the release of the second book!

Le Morte D'Arthur (Xist Classics), by Thomas Mallory

About the Author Scholars have determined that there were at least six Thomas Malorys alive in the 1400s when Le Morte d'Arthur was written. Considerable evidence points to the likeliest author as one Sir Thomas Malory or Maleore of Newbold Revell in Warwickshire, who was born in the first quarter of the fifteenth century. A member of the gentry, he became a soldier in the service of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, with whom he fought in the siege of Calais in 1436. In records of the period he is accused of various crimes--including armed robbery, attempted murder, and rape--and he is said to have executed several dramatic escapes from prison. Several things about Malory seem indisputable. As in Arthur's time when post-Roman Britain was in a state of fierce tribal war, he lived in an age of great unrest. Europe was still recovering from the Black Plague and a century of war. In England, two powerful families fought for the throne. Although he may have been a scoundrel, Malory was also, it seems clear, a man of ideals who believed in courage and loyalty, and who mourned the passing of chivalry. Incarcerated for long periods, he had many hours to fill his imagination with French romances and tales of chivalry, volumes of which were readily at hand. It is thought that Le Morte d'Arthur was written during his imprisonment. Malory referred to himself as a 'knight-prisoner.' With a military man's passion for the details of conquest, a prisoner's sense of injustice, and a penitent's desire for redemption, he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to this retelling of the Arthurian legends. Sir Thomas Malory died, it is presumed, around 1471.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. The once and future king... By FrKurt Messick Sir Thomas Mallory was a great one to write the adventures of King Arthur and his knights - a knight himself, he led a life of intrigue and adventure, albeit not one that always lived up to the ideas of chivalry he penned at the heart of the Arthurian legends. Mallory did not invent Arthur; he is one of the principle medieval chroniclers, having time (he was in prison with nothing else to do, after all) to set down in prose stories he'd heard throughout his life. These were popular tales, not always told in the same way with the same details, as is true of most oral legends and transmitted stories, much to the later frustration of scholars and readers. The earliest printing of Mallory's stories had his authorship suppressed by Caxton, one of the better-known publishers of the time. The earliest Arthurian legends date back as far as the late Roman times in Britain. Controversies abound, but many have settled on a late Roman or Romano-British general named Arturius - however, given the linguistic nature of the name (it is derivative of ruler or leader), it is impossible to know if this was in fact a name or a title, and the legends may be compilations of the acts of many leaders bearing the name. There was also a Welsh leader with the name/title Arddu, `Dark One', who is sometimes conflated into Arthurian legend. Arthur was celebrated in the pre-Norman times for the order and stability he represented; Arthur was celebrated in post-Norman times for his campaigns against Saxons. Arthur continues to be an intriguing character, today reminiscent of ancient mysteries as well as pagan and new age ideas as well.In any event, Mallory doesn't attach specific dates to his tales. The book actually consists of many tales. The first is entitled `The Tale of King Arthur', which introduces the figures of Merlin, Gawain, Uwayne, Pellinore, Morgan le Fay (the Celtic war goddess Morgana, dressed up as Arthur's sister) and others, and includes the sword-in-the-stone event. While this text has been modernised by Keith Baines, there are certain crucial lines left in Mallory's English, including this most famous one:Whoso pulleth oute this swerd of this stone and anvyld is rightwys kynge borne of all BrytaygneFollowing this tale, Mallory includes many of the famous tales in Arthurian legend as stories more or less complete in themselves, but still linking to the other tales. `The Tale of Sir Lancelot du Lake' is a knight's tale indeed, with no fewer than twenty horseback duels back-to-back. `The Tale of Sir Gareth' is a similar spirited tale, less well known. `The Book of Sir Tristram of Lyoness' makes Tristram and Iseult, famous by other writers as well, into lovers, this time with a more happy ending than usual. The lesser known `Tale of Arthur and Lucius' describes battles and skirmishes with the emperor, but never really captured popular imagination.Mallory saves the best for last, with three major tales - `The Tale of the Sangreal', the Holy Grail; `The Book of Sir Launcelot and Queen Gwynevere'; and finally, `Le Morte D'Arthur'. The tale of the Holy Grail continues into the present day in various fashions; here is contains strange glosses of the Old and New Testaments, as well as a good number of miracles, as one would expect from the Grail. The last tale, the death of Arthur, is probably the most famous, and the best written.Even though an English knight, the courtly fashion was after a French design for many centuries after the Norman conquest, and this French influence in notable in the stories, from their titles to their plots and characterisations, including the places Mallory uses.Keith Baines eliminates a lot of needless dialogue from his rendering here, but keeps the plot lines and sequence of action with integrity from earlier manuscripts and recited tales. His translation compares favourably with others, becoming a fairly standard text for good reason. Robert Graves (of `I Claudius' fame) provides an appreciative introduction to the text. Baines himself was a poet; however, this text, accepted somewhat reluctantly, is probably his best known work.Arthur lives on into the modern world and beyond. Baines' edition gives it life to carry on.

When Malory did originally write the book it was in a very late Middle English, but this edition has been edited into Modern English with standardized spelling, etc. Just in case there are any other English students interested out there...

The classic rendition of the legend of King Arthur By Kindle Customer Although the style is old fashioned and dense by today's standards, this is a must read for anyone seriously interested in Arthurian legend. There are older sources for true geeks; Mallory's version is the bridge between them and modern readers. You can bet that contemporary writers (like T.H. White, author of "The Once and Future King") knew their Mallory backwards and forwards.

Mandir would rather wrestle a lion with his bare hands than confront the dark secrets of his past. 4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Readable but nowhere near as good as the author's other books By Mr. Thomas A. Mckewen Predictable who done it, not a patch on her other works. Given this book is largely about providing back story on our hero's childhood and why he was such a bully to our heroine in the first place, I found it just made him unlikable for me. The book is largely a detective fantasy story and unfortunately you know who did it fairly early in the book. The reason why is not as obvious but by the time you find out you are just about ready to give up on the book altogether.Readable but nowhere near as good as the author's other books. No new magic, not much action and a fairly predictable plot. You probably don't need to read this book to be able to keep up with the series. The writing itself is good so the grammar nazis won't have any problems but don't expect too much from this one.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Short By Matt D Rather rushed, short story. Finished the "book" in 3 hours... This felt more like an afterthought to the previous book than one on its own.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Meh. GOOD meh, but still meh. By Chandra It'll keep you attached, but really, once finished ,one doesn't strive to find the next in line. I would read this when bored, but find the characters to be...predictable, though not necessarily flat. The premise of the world is interesting, the state of the story is, well, meh. Writer is good at showing the world though, so i'll give her that, even if i find her method of conveying the mannerism and reactions and psychology of her world to be rather dull. Please note, this author appears to be rather fascinated with psychology in that her writing is heavy in the thought processes and patterns of her characters.

Acclaimed fantasist Mary Robinette Kowal has enchanted many fans with her beloved novels featuring a Regency setting in which magic―known here as glamour―is real. In Valour and Vanity, master glamourists Jane and Vincent find themselves in the sort of a magical adventure that might result if Jane Austen wrote Ocean's Eleven. After Melody's wedding, the Ellsworths and Vincents accompany the young couple on their tour of the continent. Jane and Vincent plan to separate from the party and travel to Murano to study with glassblowers there, but their ship is set upon by Barbary corsairs while en route. It is their good fortune that they are not enslaved, but they lose everything to the pirates and arrive in Murano destitute.

Jane and Vincent are helped by a kind local they meet en route, but Vincent is determined to become self-reliant and get their money back, and hatches a plan to do so. But when so many things are not what they seem, even the best laid plans conceal a few pitfalls. The ensuing adventure is a combination of the best parts of magical fantasy and heist novels, set against a glorious Regency backdrop.

Valour and Vanity (Glamourist Histories), by Mary Robinette Kowal

From Booklist If Jane Austen were to write about a magical heist, her novel would not be all that different from the fourth installment in Kowal’s (Without a Summer, 2013) Glamour History series. Jane and Vincent travel to Murano, an island off of Venice, to study glassblowing in hopes of amalgamating it with glamour (magic). Though clever, they fall victim to an elaborate hoax that consumes their funds and leaves them stranded in Italy. Living in poverty, they team up with Catholic nuns and a street puppeteer to enact retribution. Adventures, obstacles, and high jinks propel the story while upholding its romantic core. Jane and Vincent’s healthy, steadfast marriage makes sense in the Regency era yet satisfies modern standards, even when their quips and stubbornness create problems instead of solutions. The act of weaving glamour into art or apparatuses makes for entrancing imagery, complementing Kowal’s Victorian writing style and enhancing the action-packed scenes. Lively, well written, and with sprinkles of history, Valour and Vanity will charm both adventurers and romantics. Add Lord Byron as cohort for extra fun. --Biz Hyzy

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Exciting and engaing By Cissa If you are not reading this series by Kowal, this book- the fourth- is a fine place to start. Its tone is a lot different than that of the previous novels, though- they were more "Jane Austen with magic", and this one is "if Austen wrote a heist/intrigue novel..."We get to see much more of Jane's and Vincent's relationship, and how they are learning to work together and rely on each other, albeit through struggles both within the relationship and caused by outside forces. Fot this reason, it seemed more intimate to me than the previous novels in the series, much as I loved them. Also, the plot is more obviously exciting! Pirates! Swindles! Reversals of fortune! Revenge! Secret motivations and spying! and even Lord Byron! Kowal did a brilliant job of winding the very personal and intimate into the more carefully convoluted and eventful plot, with each reflecting on the other in many ways. Wonderfully wrought! The other characters come alive, too, both the Good Guys and the not. I especially loved the portrayals of the nuns. Having attended a Catholic women's college, I learned great respect and admiration for nuns, and these are GREAT nuns, each very distinct.I also appreciated that the glamour- the magic- was described more precisely, giving me a better idea of what it can and cannot do.This was an excellent novel that kept me up a few times reading when I ought to have been asleep- and that's rare for me these days.Highly recommended, for a perspective on the Regency era and for those who would love a very unique magical system in fantasy, or who have been reading the series. I think this one is my favorite in it thus far.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. SO much better than the rest of the series! By How Roode Having just finished Valour and Vanity, I find myself wishing that the rest of the books in the Glamourist Histories had been heist novels! This book is head and shoulders above the other three in the series, both in terms of character development (and likability), and of plot, not to mention the evocation of time and place. What most impressed me in this book was how Kowal managed to balance the intrigue and suspense of a heist story with the unsettlingly intimate and personal portrayal of a marriage in an all-too-common crisis. I suspect I am not the only wife to feel that I've had the exact same argument as the Vincents, almost word for word. Had that struggle made up the majority of the novel, it would have been too heavy-handed, but when interwoven with the mystery and action of a pirate attack, spy activities, and a quest for revenge, it makes for an exciting and compelling novel. In short, each Glamourist book has been markedly better than the last, so I can't wait for the final installment!

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Mastering illusions By raesdays I have not yet read the three books before this, but that did not keep me from enjoying Valour and Vanity tremendously, and it should not stop you from picking up any book from this series either. The Regency era is Jane Austen’s England. The Prince Regent, who is the son of Mad King George (remember him from learning about the revolution, my American friends?), is a big proponent of excess and art, and Jane and Vincent work as his glamourists. Glamour is basically magic that creates illusions by manipulating light and sound. And that becomes Vincent and Jane’s trade in this novel: not glamour, but illusion. When the couple heads to Murano to find a glassmaker, they are waylaid by pirates. And that is the least alarming thing that happens to them on this trip. They end up swindled by those they thought were friends and can’t leave Murano until they pay back what they owe.It seems so simple right? If you lose your money on vacation, you go back to your hotel and call the bank, or your mom, or the American Embassy, if things really go wrong. But Jane and Vincent don’t have telephones or airplanes or online banking. Penniless, and with no practical skills save for glamour, they are left with nothing but each other. Well, that and Jane’s wedding ring, which they pawn for cash.We never have quests any more. When is the last time you had to go somewhere to find something or bring it back or travel to create something you need or fulfil your destiny? We don’t even have to go to the mall at Christmas time, you can just order everything online. Our problem solving these days is very different from what Jane and Vincent face. But what they go through is familiar. I’ve been poor and struggling to pay the rent. I’ve bought something fancy and small as a treat just to beat myself up about the extra $5 it cost. I haven’t been able to find a job and have lied about how great I’m doing in the meantime. And I’ve fought with loved ones and tried to hide the painful truth. And I’ve turned to something drastic to get back on my feet again. When Vincent gets to the edge of what he can take, the couple gets a lucky break. (As so often happens in life, as well.) Their lucky break allows them to make a plan to take back what was stolen from them. Using every glamourist trick they know, plus new tricks in the physical realm, they embark on their dangerous plan–with the help of some new friends. This heist is more fun than any I’ve ever been a part of (which, ok, is actually none in real life), and it includes feisty nuns. So while Jane and Vincent’s plan may go wrong, those reading about it can’t lose.I loved this story and I love Jane and Vincent. I’ve been known to roll my eyes at romance every now and again, but I could read about this couple forever. Neither of them is perfect, and they fight and struggle like everyone else. Romance isn’t nonstop perfection or the absence of conflict. That is exhausting and impossible. But their love seems true–true to life and true to each other.

A woman does what’s necessary to get her man… When Drayce Freeman rocked Kinsey Jamison’s world one passionate night and then turned tail and ran the morning after, she did the only thing a self-respecting woman would. Chase him down and prove they had the zing. Fortunately her BFF, a jaguar shifter, gave her the 411 on wolves—or most of it, that is. She’s ready to do whatever it takes to get her man—even if it means taking on the whole pack. The last thing Drayce needs right now is the sexy human his inner wolf wants to claim showing up in Los Lobos. The headstrong, goofy female refuses to take no for an answer. Living on the fringes of a rebuilding pack is hard enough, but now he has the widow of his pack mate and a rugrat to deal with. Adding a human to the mix would be a mistake. Duty sucks.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I don't know a more talented author writing today. By Rebecca Grimaldi From the moment this book started, it hooked me. The heroine is so amazingly alive and I just wanted to drool over the hero. I loved every second of this book. Fans of the Black Hills Wolves--and those that should be--will eat up Ms. Carnes' installment. This author is autobuy for me. I don't know a more talented author writing today.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A terrific addition to this series. By D. Antonio Our hero has enough on his plate without an unforgettable one night stand invading Pack territory to look him up. Our heroine knows that magic like the chemistry between the two is not something you run across every day and wants to explore it further. Take these two add in trust issues, dog v. cat and a dysfunctional Pack trying to get it together and you have a fun, sexy read. A terrific addition to this series.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic story :) By P. Dey This book has it all. The characters are amazing. The heroine is spunky and lovable. The hero is gruff and sexy. And the chemistry between them is hot, hot, hot! But it's not just the characters that drew me in, the storytelling is fantastic as well. There's action, comedy, and a tenderness that really hooked me and kept me turning pages. Loved it and can't wait to read more of Ms. Carnes' work!
