I must admit that I am a sucker for post-apocalyptic stories that take place underground. Tales of future generations of mankind living beneath the surface of a radiation blasted landscape. The first thing that popped into my head when I started reading Like Veins of Red Rubies was Half Past Human by T.J. Bass - that story is well known to be a wonderful example of what happens when humans have been living underground for an extended period of time. The second thing that popped into my head was City of Ember - yet another fantastic tale of mankind trying to make it's way underground after previous generations destroyed the surface.I apologize for comparing this story to others, but you must know that Half Past Human and City of Ember both hold high ranks within my collection of postapoc stories. For some reason, I did not realize that this was Book 1 of a proposed series. I must admit that when I finished, I had wished to God that I had Book 2. That being said, I will definitely be following this series with much gusto. It's a great story, I liked it very much. :)

Curious Reality: From the World of "Spilt Milk", by D.K. Cassidy

Review Reviewed by Chris Fischer for Readers' Favorite"Wow! I just finished one of the most truly unique and interesting books that I have read in a very, very long time. Author D.K. Cassidy has a creative and special voice, not one you will see often in current literature. Her writing style is almost poetical, and the world she creates with her pen is simply fantastic. Curious Reality would appeal to any reader who enjoys literary fiction, beautifully written prose, or books with characters that will stay with you long after you've finished reading about them."

About the Author D.K. Cassidy scribbles daily in various genres including Magical Realism, Urban Gothic, Science Fiction and Literary Fiction. Her goal? Messing with your mind by transforming the voices in her head into odd stories. D.K. Cassidy lives in the Pacific Northwest with her greatest fans: her husband Mark, twin sons Aidan and Jared, and three cats. When not writing, she loves to travel, run, use the Oxford comma, and of course read!

By Blaine Coleman D K Cassidy explores the lives of characters first introduced in her previous book, “Spilt Milk”. The characters are all deeply disturbed individuals, but the author artfully weaves in enough detail to make those people real. The writing is clean, simple prose that sometimes borders on poetry, and, by switching into each character’s point of view, we see some of their motivations, why they are so disturbed and separated from the world around them. Scenes in several of the stories, beginning in the first, border on magical realism and I found myself glad the author didn’t make clear whether or not those events were real, or the imaginings of a disturbed mind; Author D K Cassidy's prose is an excellent example of the “less is more” rule. The characters and events are fleshed out so well they’ll stay with you long after the book has been read. This is a five-star read that I highly recommend to readers of any genre!

But this time, while consuming her newest book, “Curious Reality,” I instinctively started to analyze the depth of this author’s power and why she ‘speaks’ to me.Using unique, haunting, and an almost Haiku-esque prose, she manages to bring a true authenticity to her characters and their various mental issues. Whether it be hallucinations or bizarre obsessions leftover from childhood abuse, or simply part of life’s inevitable scars, in her insightful hands, she catapults us all to dark places––places that may horrify you, but at the same time, pull at your heart strings. And as she intertwines these characters together into some form of dysfunctional network, she always, ALWAYS makes you think on a more profound, soulful level. Inspirational...

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant Read! By Big Bunny Let me start by saying, I preordered it, got it this morning and had it read by noon - yes, it's that good! Now for the more formal review!Curious Reality by D.K. Cassidy continues to explore the lives of characters introduced in her earlier work, Spilt Milk. While I recommend you start with Spilt Milk, it isn't necessary to do so to enjoy and understand the current offering. The recurring characters (Caleb, Joy, and George) all lead rather dysfunctional lives that curiously intersect. In this read, Joy discovers she has a special talent; Caleb makes some decisions about life; and George may just find his soul mate. Of course, in Cassidy's version of reality, all of these events are just slightly twisted and off-balance which is what makes her work so original and thought -provoking.Spilt Milk was, by far, the best book I read in 2014 and, as a follow-up, Curious Reality does not disappoint. Ms. Cassidy's writing is sparse - there are no wasted words - and each word she uses is very carefully chosen for maximum impact. The result is a gripping read, with characters and situations that border on the bizarre and tease at the corners of your mind.Thank you, Ms. Cassidy for another brilliant journey into a new version of reality. Can't wait to see what you come up with next! Most highly recommended - Five big, bright, shiny stars!

Emilio Sandoz is a remarkable man, a living saint and Jesuit priest who undergoes an experience so harrowing and profound that it makes him question the existence of God. This experience―the first contact between human beings and intelligent extraterrestrial life―begins with a small mistake and ends in a horrible catastrophe.

Sandoz is a part of the crew sent to explore a new planet. What they find is a civilization so alien and incomprehensible that they feel compelled to wonder what it means to be human.

The priest is the only surviving member of the crew and upon his return he is confronted by public inquisition and accusations of the most heinous crimes imaginable. His faith utterly destroyed, crippled and defenseless, his only hope is to tell his tale. Father John Candotti has been charged with discovering the truth, but the truth may be more than Earth is willing to accept.

The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell

Amazon.com Review This strange, ambitious science fiction novel has already won enough attention for its first-time author to make it a selection by both the Book of the Month and QPB clubs. Father Emilio Sandoz, a Jesuit linguist, heads a team of scientists and explorers on an expedition to the planet Rakhat, where contact has been established with two apparently primitive races, the Runa and the Jana'ata. The narrative shifts back and forth between 2016, when contact is first made, and 2060, to a Vatican inquest interrogating the maimed and broken Sandoz. A paleoanthropologist, Russell makes the descriptions of the inhabitants of Rakhat both convincing and unsettling. Check out Amazon.com's Sparrow feature and read an excerpt from the book!

From Publishers Weekly An enigma wrapped inside a mystery sets up expectations that prove difficult to fulfill in Russell's first novel, which is about first contact with an extraterrestrial civilization. The enigma is Father Emilio Sandoz, a Jesuit linguist whose messianic virtues hide his occasional doubt about his calling. The mystery is the climactic turn of events that has left him the sole survivor of a secret Jesuit expedition to the planet Rakhat and, upon his return, made him a disgrace to his faith. Suspense escalates as the narrative ping-pongs between the years 2016, when Sandoz begins assembling the team that first detects signs of intelligent extraterrestrial life, and 2060, when a Vatican inquest is convened to coax an explanation from the physically mutilated and emotionally devastated priest. A vibrant cast of characters who come to life through their intense scientific and philosophical debates help distract attention from the space-opera elements necessary to get them off the Earth. Russell brings her training as a paleoanthropologist to bear on descriptions of the Runa and Jana'ata, the two races on Rakhat whose differences are misunderstood by the Earthlings, but the aliens never come across as more than variations of primitive earthly cultures. The final revelation of the tragic human mistake that ends in Sandoz's degradation isn't the event for which readers have been set up. Much like the worlds it juxtaposes, this novel seems composed of two stories that fail to come together. BOMC, QPB and One Spirit Book Club selections. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist When readers meet Father Emilio Sandoz, he's a wreck, inside and out. His hands are maimed, his body bruised; he suffers from scurvy, anemia, and spiritual devastation. The year is 2059. Although Jesuit missionaries thrive on suffering, something particularly dire has happened to this skilled linguist. Four decades earlier, he proposed an expedition to discover the sentient beings whose strange yet beautiful music had been detected by radio telescope. As the only survivor of this spiritual odyssey to Alpha Centauri (the star system four light years from Earth), Sandoz was found dazed and filled with terror by rescuers who inferred that he had resorted to prostitution to stay alive. Returned to the Jesuit Order, Sandoz is forced to face truths about the godless alien societies on the planet Rakhat that he and his colleagues grew to know, love, and perish at the claws of. Miscommunications, misplaced trust, and tiny mistakes led to their downfall. The dense prose in this complex tale may at first seem off-putting, but hang on for the ride; it's riveting! Russell's first novel is also a Book-of-the-Month Club selection. Jennifer Henderson

329 of 353 people found the following review helpful. Riveting, intellectual, spiritual, thought provoking.... By Nana Annie Reading this book was a enriching, rewarding experience for me. As with most books, it isn't for everyone. I was looking for a little lighter read, since I've been reviewing books on death and dying and the Holocaust. Silly me - but I am so glad I made the mistake of thinking this would be an escape from the ultra serious! This is definitely not a light read and in fact, it hits on many of the issues I've been exploring - the existence and function of God, the meaning of life, the use of suffering and healing, the delicacy and necessity of human relationships. The story switches between the year 2019 - the US has lost its primary position as a world leader to Japan, marketers search the streets looking for ghetto kids with intellectual skills to groom and sell as indentured servants - and the year 2060, when a Jesuit priest is under examination for sins he is assumed to have committed while on a mission to a New World - Rakhat a planet far away from here.We see Father Emilio Sandoz before the journey (2019) as he initiates this venture, traveling with characters so well written, I started to believe they were real. Dr. Anne and her husband, George; the recently freed indentured planner, Sofia; the young man who discovered the existence of the other world, Jimmy Quinn; D.W., their grumpy Jesuit leader. Two other characters are less developed, but make nice backdrop for this riveting story. The book was a little difficult to get into at the start, not because of the writing, but because of the promise of horrors to come. How could this priest, so filled with life in 2019, be so horribly disfigured (did I really want to read the gruesome details?) And how could he have ended up a prostitute, and then murdered a child?Note: These are not spoilers -- this is information freely given at the start of the story, a hook that pulls the reader in.To find out, the reader follows Sandoz' slow recovery, sees his bitterness and anger in his interaction with the community who is interrogating him in the year 2060, after he has been rescued and returned from Rakhat. Sandoz questions the intimate, passionate connection he'd had with God - and the reader is led to question some assumptions about God, quite similar to those raised by the Holocaust. (Isn't God supposed to deliver us from evil if we do all the right stuff?)A science fiction tale, a mystery, a spiritual quest, a sociological and anthropology exploration, this book would be an excellent choice for a group to read and discuss. It is also great for the inquisitive mind of the solo reader. As for me, I hated to put it down. I read it as often as I could, and almost wept when it was done (sort of Harry Potter for this grown-up!) After writing this review, I'm off to order the sequel, Children of God.

Sci-fi fans - it has won lots of awards, featured on umpteen 'best of' lists and is just excellent science fiction. If I only had five sci-fi books, this would be one of them. Having said that, it's not 'hard sci-fi' - in other words it doesn't let the science get in the way of the story. Willing suspension of disbelief is the way to go.2. anthropologists - Ok, so that's not many of us, but the point is that this book sensitively explores the concept of 'otherness'. There are two intelligent species on the planet. One is nice but dim, the other is bright but deadly. Who do the humans identify with? Intriguing question, huh? Well it was for me, anyway.3. Religious people. And also people interested in the possibility of God, the possibility of forgiveness. This book faithfully addresses the seeming absence of God in the pain of the world (or should that be universe?). But it's never 'preachy', just keepin' it real.4. Anyone who likes a good yarn. It's well written and the plot cracks along. The repeated cutting between the story of the mission and the aftermath of the mission keeps you guessing to the end. There's a kind of dawning realisation of the horror of what's being told, and I for one couldn't put it down.5. Look, the first human contact with alien life is sponsored not by NASA but by... THE VATICAN! Its a mad idea - you just have to read this book to see how it works out.

60 of 64 people found the following review helpful. Is God a Criminal? By Patrick Shepherd Science fiction is a medium that is tailor-made for investigation of some of humanity's most perplexing questions, most especially questions of his (and the universe's) origin, God, what constitutes moral behavior, man's ultimate purpose. But very few science fiction novels really attempt to tackle these questions, getting caught up instead in the nifty gadgets that can be imagined, and forgetting their human element. Not so here.Russell has crafted a fine work of character, of people both exceptional and very real, in this tale of first contact between a Jesuit sponsored mission and the denizens of the planet Rakhat. Emilio Sandoz is the only survivor of this mission, and most of the story is told from his viewpoint, both as a currently happening time-line and a later recollection under interrogation after he returns to Earth. It is easy to become engrossed in this man's life, as we see him as a great linguist, a priest with very understandable doubts but a solid need to help others, a man with normal desires for companionship, a person suffering under sever stress, a man mangled both physically and mentally. The other mission members are not slighted in the character development area, so that by the mid-point of the book, I felt that I was living with a very tight-knit family, whose individual foibles were all well-known and accepted, whose interpersonal banter was enjoyable and fitting. It is this very depth of characterization that adds poignancy to the mission's fate and starkly highlights the main religious question. How can one believe in a God that allows such terrible things as the mission failure to happen? How can one not believe in a higher power that has orchestrated such an incredibly complex universe of objects, intelligences, and events? Falling within this halo are other questions, ones of personal responsibility against an omniscient deity, institutionalized religion versus an individual call to God, the morality of killing in a culture radically different from our own, when does pride in accomplishment become insufferable hubris? Russell does not provide answers, but her characters each have their own way of dealing with these questions, methods both practical and, for some, esoteric. In this area, this novel is very comparable to James Blish's A Case of Conscience, another fine novel working within this same area of ideas and religious import. There are some elements that are not so good. Possibly most obvious is the idea that a privately funded mission to contact the first verified alien intelligence would not only be the first but the only mission, at least until the rest of the world found out about this mission. Second is the idea that star-travel is so close to being doable that a (relatively) small amount of money and some minor engineering would allow it to become a reality - if it was that close surely someone would have started such a project long before, even without the impetus of alien contact. Third, this is supposed to be the Alpha Centauri star system. From a planet orbiting Centauri A, Centauri C ( a small and quite dim red dwarf) is so distant it would not show a visible disk nor provide any great illumination (it would look like just a bright star), yet there are consistent references in the novel to working under the red light of the third sun. In a work of 'hard' science fiction, such problems would be pretty major. For this novel, with its primary focus on theme and character, these flaws are at most gnats, easily dismissed as not relevant to the overall story.Emotionally and intellectually powerful, this story can upset your life, force a new perspective on your world-view, make you once more sit up and see the sparrow.--- Reviewed by Patrick Shepherd (hyperpat)

I'm not complaining about the content, just the length. This is very very short, and barely can be called a sory, it's more like an introduction.

I read the whole 3 books and this is not what I call a Prepper series. These could have been all combined to 1 book. I am very disappointed in the price also. If they would have been 99 cents each I would not feel like I wasted my money, being $2.99 each I felt was way to much for such a short story and that is all it was.

It's not that they're gross or demonic in any way, but this selection is not full of candy-coated stories of happily-ever-after. Very good stuff.

By Stephanie Newman I was really looking forward to reading through some of these stories because I’ve read one or two on the internet and from what I know, they are much more dark versions of the common fairy tales most people know and love. I think I was expecting more Disney classics in this version but I was slightly disappointed to see the table of contents (of sixty two stories, I might add) only had two stories that I recognized being affiliated with Disney. Overall, I think I recognized five story titles total and was excited to start reading through some! They have some of the more commonly told stories, such as Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White! So the fairy tales that most people know are similar to these ones, just cleaned up so that they are more appropriate and not as scary for children I think. If I’m not mistaken, these are where the stories originated from and so it’s interesting to see the other details and the other side of the story that companies like Disney leave out to make it more appropriate for kids. The darker tones in the story lines make it more fun for adults to read, and I have to say after so many years of reading fairy tales that some of the dark twists in the stories surprised me, but it was nice to read the stories and not know what was going to happen because the story was much different! If you enjoy some classic stories but want to read them with a bit of a twist, I would recommend this book. Stories are no more than a few minutes long each, and the entire book was certainly fun to read.

From the Back Cover

Yoga, Meet Life.

Sometimes an hour-long yoga class is the only chance we get to connect meaningfully with our bodies and our minds during a week otherwise full of work, family, and the daily grind. Have you ever wondered how would it feel to bring that experience of awareness and calm out of the yoga studio and into your everyday life? After all, we know that practicing yoga can give us a leaner body and more sculpted limbs, but isn't its most important benefit the way it makes us feel?

In Do Your Om Thing, master yoga teacher and creator of the popular blog OmGal.com Rebecca Pacheco shows us that the true practice of yoga is about much more than achieving the perfect headstand or withstanding an hour-long class in a room heated to 100 degrees. "Yoga is not about performance," she tells us, "it's about practice, on your mat and in your life. If you want to get better at anything what should you do? Practice. Confidence, compassion, awareness, joy—if you want more of these—and who doesn't?—yoga offers the skills to practice them."

In her warm, personal, and often hilarious prose, Rebecca translates yogic philosophy for its twenty-first-century devotees, making ancient principles and philosophy feel accessible, relatable, and genuinely rooted in the world in which we live today. And by illuminating how the guiding principles of yoga apply to our modern lives, Rebecca shows us that the true power of a yoga practice is not physical transformation, but mental and spiritual liberation.

Russell indexI've been practicing yoga, with a frequency that has varied between daily and weekly, for over 15 years. I've read parts of the Bhagavad Gita, I used to know the primary series by heart, and I've been on a week-long retreat that featured long periods of silence, a lot of vegetables, and 45 minutes of pigeon pose at a time. All of this is to say that I'm somewhat familiar with yoga. I'm not an expert, by a long shot. But I've read a lot and practiced a lot and even written about it from time to time here.Rebecca Pacheco's Do Your Om Thing: Bending Yoga Tradition to Fit Your Modern Life is my favorite book about yoga that I have ever read.Rebecca makes yoga tradition clear and compelling and unpacks things like the chakras and the koshas that I'd previously found confusing enough to be entirely off-putting. She asserts something that we all know to be true but that I posit most of us have lost touch with: that yoga is about far, far more than the asanas. But taking yoga beyond the physical poses is frankly hard, because the literature about yoga's traditions and philosophy is opaque and difficult and because, especially in these days, we are all more distracted than ever. In this book, Rebecca changes all of that. These two quotes summarize what Do Your Om Thing is all about.Yoga doesn't manufacture a feeling of completeness; it offers tools for becoming present enough to realize it's been there all along.Internal quiet and connection to our deepest self form the essence of yoga. It's not fancy. It doesn't balance on one arm. But it's the plain truth of yoga's purpose, and it will change your life.Do Your Om Thing is structured in four parts. Part I, Yoga: Ancient and Modern, briefly covers Rebecca's own story and path to yoga and then describes the famous "eight limbs" of yoga. Over and over again, Rebecca shows how the sometimes dusty-sounding limbs of yoga have relevance to today's life, and reminds us that being a yogi in 2015 is about understanding yogic tradition in order to apply it to modern life. She quotes Zen master Sheng Yen, reminding us that "practice should not be separated from living and living at all times should be one's practice." In Do Your Om Thing she emphasizes that while yoga may be a series of sexy poses that will give you sculpted arms, it is far, far more than that.Yoga is a way of being in the world.Rebecca discusses each "limb" of yoga briefly and offers concrete guidelines for readers wanting to incorporate them into their regular lives. This is one of things I love most about Do Your Om Thing: the way Rebecca makes something as diffuse and difficult to grasp as yoga philosophy utterly understandable, real, and actionable.Part II, The Body, talks about the chakras, the seven energy points that reside along our spines, and the koshas, the body's five layers. Once again, Rebecca shares specific intentions, mantras, and asanas (with beautiful photographs) to go with each chakra. As in the rest of the book, Rebecca's clear, lucid writing renders understandable (and fascinating) something that I'd previously found challenging.Part III, The Mind, discusses meditation. Rebecca reminds us that "the quality and direction of your attention is the greatest determinant of the quality of your life." This section, and the brief discussion of meditation in part I, showed me that much of what preoccupies me in my life is in fact quite yogic in nature. When I read this, I shivered:It will always be tempting to fidget, flee, or Facebook update instead of inhabiting the present moment, which can be challenging and uncomfortable, even tragic and terrifying, at times, but it's this lack of consciousness that leaves us feeling like we need yoga in the first place. The feeling of missing our own lives, as they are happening.Oh, yes. This feeling, of missing out on my own experience even as I live it is one I've long felt and often written about. Rebecca shares some helpful tools for beginning meditators and describes several meditation styles.Part IV, The Spirit, which makes suggestions for "spiritual sustenance," is my favorite part of the book. Rebecca tells personal stories, including about her grandmother, to whom the book is dedicated and who believed that "life itself is a spiritual practice." Parts of this section of Do Your Om Thing brought tears to my eyes and goosebumps to my skin.Thomas Merton once wrote, "Life is this simple: we are living in a world that is absolutely transparent, and God is shining through it all the time." This doesn't mean that life won't be difficult of painful, characterized by change and loss; it means that a higher power, the wellspring for your spiritual life, whether you realize it or not, is holding a candlelight vigil or perhaps a roaring bonfire for you all hours of the day and night. It doesn't sleep. It doesn't leave. Is the loneliness of which I've written, whose shadow limns my everyday experience, an ache for this higher power, a longing to trust in that candlelight or bonfire? I suspect so. Rebecca shares nine "suggestions for spiritual sustenance," each of which I found profoundly moving. She incorporates quotations from literature, stories and thoughts from others living an engaged life, and questions from ancient texts (such as the Bhagavad Gita). The last section of the book, titled love, opens with one of my all-time favorite quotes: "In the end only three things matter: how well we have lived, how well we have loved, and how well we have learned to let go" (Jack Kornfield). Rebecca closes with reflections on love, for the self, for other, for the world at large. She reminds us that while yoga doesn't have to be our sole workout, it is our soul workout. "Find a way to make life the practice - one of humility, gratitude, and awareness," Rebecca urges us. And with this beautiful, thoughtful, wise book, Rebecca has given us an incredibly powerful tool to do just that. I can't recommend Rebecca's book highly enough. I hope you'll read it.

An Inspiring and Informative Must Read for Anyone Who Wants to Live A Healthy Life By Karen Fabian I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of Rebecca's book, "Do Your Om Thing," and I consumed it in 4 days. When I say "consumed," I mean I carried it around with me, read it non-stop and was completely absorbed by its contents. Now, given I was on vacation, but believe me when I say there were plenty of other things I could have been doing. But it was that good. And, to further add interest, I'm a yoga teacher and I've been teaching for many years and while some people might think that I knew much of what Rebecca writes about because she too, is a teacher and her book is about yoga (I did not, by the way, know much of what she writes about in this much detail) I can say unequivocally that I learned a number of things, re-learned many, was absorbed by the stories she used to illustrate some of yoga's most basic, fundamental principles and I also laughed, cried and was inspired. Rebecca's book is by far one of the best books out there when it comes to bringing yoga's fundamental principles to light in a contemporary, understandable way. Further, she writes in a way that makes you feel like you know her. She shares stories of both success and heartbreak. She uses quotes from some of her favorite books, among others, leverages medical research in several passages to make her point and has colleagues in the industry add their (way more) than two cents to give the book a bit of a community feel. The other thing that makes this book such a great resource is that it's not just for people who practice yoga. This could work as a book for someone who's overworked at their job; lacking inspiration in their life; someone who wants to turn over a new leaf or perhaps someone who's just gone through an unexpected change. It's a book that provides theory, foundation and then specific steps you can take to make these ancient, weather worn, "withstanding the test of time" yogic principals part of your daily life. Things like meditation, focus, concentration, eating healthy, feeling good in your own skin; it's all here, supported by the years of yogic history but presented with a current twist. You can feel how much heart and soul went into this book and when she talks about her "Vavo" (grandmother) and her boyfriend, you can really feel the love lift right off the page. I would recommend this book to anyone that teaches, practices yoga or is looking for a better understanding of yoga "beyond the poses." It's a great read, a fast read but one you'll read over and over again. I know I will.

By Victoria Klein Oooh, have I got a Yoga book for you.Wait, don’t close the window yet!I know there’s a seemingly endless number of Yoga books on the shelves these days, but this one is for YOU. Yes you – the real person on the other end of the screen you’re reading this post on right now.You have a job, friends, family, lover(s), commitments, hopes, dreams, fears, and bills (among other things). You make it to a Yoga class when you can, or maybe you have a dedicated asana practice but it just isn’t what it used to be.Like I said ... oooh, have I got a Yoga book for you! "It takes courage to begin, but it gets easier. Yogis seek to prepare the best conditions for success, and then it’s a matter of repetition, momentum, and perseverance. At the core of a meaningful life is the desire and capacity to take the steps needs to create what we want."Enter: Rebecca Pacheco – or for web-savvy Yogis, Om Gal (omgal.com). I’ve been a fan of her realistically quirky Yoga blog for years and when I heard she was writing a book, I nearly fell out of my chair (or out of Utkatasana as it were - Yoga humor!).This Massachusetts gal has no trouble keeping it real – like yours truly. Her writing style always makes me feel at home + like I’m talking to a good friend who just “gets” me.Naturally, her first book, "Do Your Om Thing: Bending Yoga Tradition to Fit Your Modern Life", is written in that same down-to-earth, non-hippy-dippy tone that we can all relate to. "If we didn’t have illusions, we wouldn’t need Yoga ... The Yoga you are doing is not lessened by your daily distractions or stress. It is fueled by it; the distractions and stress are the kerosene for the karmic burning we need to do, to slough off the old and ill-fitting parts of ourselves and become clearer and closer to who we really are."There she goes – keepin’ it real!I’ll be honest: I lost Yoga recently. My physical practice fell off to nearly non-existent, as did my vital daily morning meditation practice. I became someone that I didn’t recognize, but she also seemed very familiar. She was me, is me – the true me. The flawed, curious, creative, passionate me that I’d been ignoring for over a decade.Reading "Do Your Om Thing" reminded me of all the things I love about Yoga. No matter who you are, where you are, how much money you make, or your what believe spiritually, Yoga can help you become more present, compassionate, open-hearted, and focused (plus maybe a bit more flexible). This book reminded me of why I started teaching Yoga, and why I needed to take a break from teaching. This book is for real Yogis, modern Yogis who don’t pure on airs about being perfect in every asana, obsessing about the latest juice cleanses, or boasting about how everyone at the local lululemon store knows their name. This book is for the perfectly imperfect among us – that’s you and me, my friend! You’ll learn a bit more about asana, sure, but you’ll also get a joyous dose of the expansive world of Yoga you may have never heard of before. Even if you’re a Yoga teacher like me, naming off chakras like celebrities in the latest tabloids, this book is a delightful reminder + a fresh perspective on timeless topics.Yes, there are a lot of Yoga books out there (I even wrote one!), but every book is written by a different person. A person with a different background, different perspective, different insights on a subject that people have been studying for thousands of years. And Rebecca’s book, Do Your Om Thing, is unequivocally worth your time, your money, + the space on your bookshelf.

All the tools to make dropping cable a reality By Bill Meyers As someone who has already cut the cord, I wanted to see if there was additional information I could use to enhance the experience. This book presents the options in a short, very readable and mostly complete manner. It even caused me to review the current streaming services that I have been using to make sure I had picked the right options. I currently use a Channel Master outdoor antenna and the Channel Master DVR+ with excellent results for free OTA programing. For streaming I have both the Amazon Fire TV unit and Roku 3. Both are reviewed in this book in a readable and informative manner. I subscribe to Sling TV, Amazon Prime, Netflix and Hulu Plus for streaming. Each has pros and cons as outlined by this book. Overall, the book was informative and easy to understand. Might be a little heavy handed regarding promotion of Amazon but I am a supporter so did not mind.

I've been wanting to do this for some time but have been a little afraid to try. Armed with this book I'm going to do it. I already have the Amazon TV but wasn't using it since I bought my new Smart TV. Now I see that since I already own it it's the best way to go. Lots of great and understandable information on the various services also. If you even think you want to get rid of cable/satellite this is the only book you'll need.

Basic Information well Explained By Davebart If you are considering throwing your cable box through a window, this is a good first step to find out your options. Of course, with any book that explains technology, it will need a lot of updates and price checking, but links in the book to the various services make that easy. Not too heavy on the techno-speak, it explains the differences between Over The Air and Internet services, Free and Pay services, and even the difference between Amazon's Fire, Fire Stick, and Google's Chrome Cast. Now, all I have to do is decide what shows I absolutely must have the same week, and which I can wait weeks or months for.

This isn't anything like a zombie story; in fact, this is more of a fantasy horror novella...kind of like something in the Warhammer universe.I liked the way the sections are divided by POVs. It really helps keep a steady buildup in the storyline. Loved the ending. I think this should have been a full-length novel.

McMullen I'm very picky when it comes to horror because there is only so many ways the genre can be done without a story resorting to shock value to set itself apart. This story has shock value of a different sort. The story itself is told in layers, with each building upon the last until we reach what we expect is the final resolve, only to find that... Well, I'm not going to ruin that part.I will say that this story does contain some graphic scenes and sexual language that may be out of the comfort zone for some readers, but it is not, as one often finds in horror, gratuitous. Aside from a single raised eyebrow at one particular word choice, there was nothing so stark that it pulled me out of the flow of the tale.I'd recommend this to fans of horror and dark fantasy who are looking for something a little different.

I generally don't read a lot of horror as, frankly, it usually doesn't scare me. This short story definitely disturbed me.Set in Mesopotamia in ancient times, the story deals with evil, the purest of evil, and seems to laugh at the folly of mortals that try to conquer it.Chilling and weird, disturbing and disgusting... yet Hash writes it with such eloquence. Think Edgar Allan Poe taken up about ten notches.

Review Finalist for 2016 Sir Julius Vogel Award: Best Novel. Awarded the Awesome Indies Seal of Excellence."The story is such an engaging mix of paranormal ghost story with modern-day mystery and suspense that one can hardly put it down!  Smith weaves historical New Zealand cultrue and Maori folklore seamlessly into the plot, and then ratchets up the danger, culminating in a wild ride where one never really knows which reality will prevail...for a nail-biter with a creative twist, this one is a must!" - InD'tale Magazine"Currents of Change is a well-paced paranormal romance with, for many readers outside the country, the interesting staging of a(fictional) town, with subtle touches of the New Zealand culture. Theromance is an important theme to the storyline but not too overt ordwelled too much upon to detract from the paranormal aspects of thestory. . .  would appeal to readers who like a good ghost story, with a little bit of history and a dash of romance in the mix." - SQ Mag International Speculative Fiction eZine"I really enjoyed this book - a light, but interesting read that I didn't want to put down." - The Happy Homemaker

Enjoyable mix of ghost story and romantic tale By Mary Jones "Currents of Change' is so many kinds of book - ghost tale, tender love story, spooky fantasy and edgy suspense tale and all worked well for me. Sara O'Neill flees her abusive husband to take refuge in her grandmother's old home in rural New Zealand, knowing nothing of the house's history and little suspecting what is to come once she moves in. Fortunately her neighbour, electrician Nate Adams, is there to help as no one else in the town seems happy about the return of an O'Neill to the small community.Darian Smith mixes British and Maori mythology with contemporary romance and suspense motes in a book that is sometimes downright scary, sometimes sweetly romantic and often unexpected. As a reader, I was firmly lodged in Sara and Nate's corner, wanting them to win. Add in a little girl and her cat, a whole tribe of other cats, a grumpy aunt, a ghost haunted by its own tragic love story and a vindictive ex, and the whole was a thoroughly enjoyable read with an ending that was both unexpected and deeply satisfying. I look forward to more books from Darian Smith.

By Lee Murray Escaping an abusive marriage, Sara O’Neill seeks sanctuary in Kowhiowhio, a small town in New Zealand’s northland, where she stays in an abandoned house belonging to her grandmother. But small-town grudges run deep, and the village shop owner is hell-bent on getting Sara’s sanctuary condemned, claiming that the house’s myriad of electrical and building issues are a safety hazard. But it’s not all bad: Sara’s handsome neighbour Nate and his daughter Abi seem to have taken a shine to her, as have the neighbourhood cats. And Sara’s going to need all the help she can get when it seems that even the house has turned on her… A tightly written evocative book which captures the undercurrents of small town insularity, Currents of Change is a blend of Irish and Maori mythology couched in contemporary romance. But with its gritty themes of prejudice, betrayal and trust, it would be a mistake to dismiss Currents of Change as a simple romance. This is great paranormal read, you'll stay up late to read... Move over Nicholas Sparks!

I really enjoyed this paranormal romance set in Kowhiowhio By Debbie I really enjoyed this paranormal romance set in Kowhiowhio,a small town New Zealand. Sara was a likeable protagonist and I was impressed at how convincingly she was portrayed. Smith does an excellent job in making you feel her suffering and trauma over her loss and previous experiences without falling into sentimental cliches or painting her as a weak victim. I really enjoyed the combination her of strength and vulnerability. Nate is a thoroughly charming and appealing romantic hero - a hunky electrician widower dad and nice guy who has just bought a kitten for his daughter. Not long after arriving at the abandoned old family home on the run from her abusive ex, Sara finds herself assisting her attractive neighbour in the search for the escaped kitten and it seems everything is set for the two to fall in love. Foruntately (at least for the sake of a page-turning compelling narrative) problems in the form of a disapproving sister-in-lar Moana (who has her own secret reasons for disliking and distrusting Sara) and some scary supernatura electricall interference. Sara's family's home has not been entirely abandoned - it has a ghost, and what's more the house is connetced to a portal between worlds. Someone or something has been trapped beyond the portal, and they've been waiting to get free...I recommend this book to anyone who likes romantic and/or supernatural suspense stories. It's well-written with rich descriptions of small town New Zealand, engaging characters and an intriguing storyline weaving together the past with the present, the culture and mythology of theTangata Whenua with the British settlers.

Trinity - Defying Destiny: Trinity Series #2, by Kylie Price

About the Author Kylie Price is a shy and reserved person when around people she doesn't know. But, when she does know you, she is a bag of laughs sarcasm, fun and very witty. She has a natural ability to be cheeky in less than a breath. Those friends and family close to her enjoy the sudden burst of energy and laughter that she brings out in others. This is carried over into her novels. From a broken home, growing up was hard and often she felt alone and isolated. She used her imagination to push past that feeling and started creating new worlds from the age of ten. She is dyslexic, but don't let that put you off her books. She has formed a strong team and friendship with her writing and her followers help her to no end. She has pushed past her fears, anxiety and feeling of abandonment to bring herself to full light and follow her dreams of being a writer, no matter how imperfect her spelling is. One of her favourite quotes, "Most days I get a text message from Auto Correct saying, 'What the hell is wrong with you woman. I have no idea what you're on about. Stop that.' lol." This is truly her. She admits to many faults and flaws, but she moves forward them all and takes it on the chin. She strives everyday to improve as a writer, friend, mother, etc. Though I think she is fabulous how she is, she reassures me, "There is always room for improvement no matter how great a person thinks they are." So, from me, I say take the chance on this amazing writer's books and follow her, friend her and enjoy the ride with us all. You won’t be disappointed. Carter I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who likes the young adult, paranormal genre. In this continuation of the Trinity trilogy, Ms. Price has once again NOT disappointed. We start right where Trinity: The Prophecy left off - learning about Trinity's past and how the people in her life now have always been a part of her life even when she didn't know it. From there it's a fast-paced trip as she tries to find her way through the new world of the supernatural that she has been not only thrown into, but is now an integral part of. The Prophecy is very specific about what is supposed to happen to Trinity - can she change the outcome? Can she find happiness with Jason? Is there a chance at a relationship with her newly found father? And just where and how does she fit into this whole crazy mess? The only way to find out is to give this book a read - but be warned, there are so many twists you never see coming and that's what makes Ms. Price's writing so great!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. love love love By Crystal ARC reader reviewAmazing second book book! With some I've read lately it's been more of "the first is the best"! But defying destiny was as good if not better that the 1st book! But that is not hard to say because all of kylie prices books are amazing and well written to the point you never want to put them down!Trinity is back and she is pissed, scared and lost! But when she embraces herself for who she is ment to be all along, this new women kicks some major ass, but still has the heart of gold! Not to mention the hot Jason in there ready to bend over backwards for his women and friends & family!!New faimies are made some are lost but ever forgotten!Love me some Kylie price

Caravella ARC copyAs the story of Trinity continues, she must learn she has the power to control those around her. She must transform from a young woman to a leader; a leader others are willing to follow. Satisfied the traumas from book 1 are resolved and the many trinities of relationships unite, they forge their way ahead to find that which will bring them all together. There's a new element of danger surfacing within the ranks of their supernatural world. An evil that carries the weight of wealth and the military behind it. With her new found confidence in herself, Trinity faces the loss of her closest loved ones if she isn't up to the task at hand.
