Classic Twilight Zone Meets a Modern Need for Human Connection as Seen Through an Android’s Eyes By Chris P In the classic Twilight Zone episode “The Lonely,” Corry — a criminal exiled, alone, to a planet and only occasionally visited by his guards — falls in love with a robot, Alicia. She’s delivered as a gift for Corry by one of the guards who feels sorry for him. When Corry is pardoned, he wants to take Alicia with him, but there’s not enough room on the ship. So, to rid Corry of his desire to take her with them, one of the guards shoots her, and they leave her on the ground of the barren planet as she repeats, “Corry, Corry.”The episode calls into question what we, as humans, can bring ourselves to love and under what circumstances. Corry falls in love with Alicia when he realizes she’s more than the sum total of her circuits. In “I, Caroline,” David Bruns masterfully revisits this theme—from the android’s perspective.A ship crashes and over time, one by one, its human occupants die. Caroline is the android attached to the group. As the unfriendly planet claims each of the crew, Caroline bears witness to their deaths. Yet, she survives. Over time, her evolution from circuited servant to a feeling, humanoid creature is an affecting journey through our own sense of what makes us human beings. As Bruns describes it: “Before the accident, I was Caretaker 176, with duties to tend the crew of the Ranger while they were in deep space stasis. After the accident, I became Caroline, and I felt the loneliness, and the loss of our dead crew, and the passage of time just as keenly as they did.”Caroline begins to learn, assimilate, and adapt as we might expect an android to do; only, she’s learning from her human companions what it means to *be human*. For example, at the knee of a child fond of knock-knock jokes, Caroline begins to understand the concept of humor. I won’t go into more plot details so as to avoid spoilers.Through his narrative—told in first person from Caroline’s perspective—Bruns shows us Caroline’s analytical appreciation for her own development as she learns to deal with the evolution of emotion within herself. That is, we see Caroline grow as she explains to herself (and the reader) how she learns to interact emotionally with the world around her; how we engage through feeling (and love) with those whom we hold most dear. And how sometimes joyous—and tragically heartbreaking—that experience can be.Bruns follows in the tradition of great sci-fi like The Twilight Zone and Star Trek by showing us the outsider’s perspective on the human condition. He shows us that – though we might wish to be able to feel nothing in our darkest hours of emotional pain – being human is, after all, a more desirable fate than not being able to feel anything at all. And something a lonely android might even aspire to.I was provided an advanced copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

By Tommy I applaud that someone has taken the time to write something for a Virtualbox beginner. However, it's all GUI, not CLI; its example is of a Windows guest install only, not Linux. So, very little value to me personally. I'd say it's a "Guide Book for the Beginner...",not "An Ultimate Guide Book...". On the other hand, it was only $2.95 for the Kindle.

It took me a couple chapters to catch on to Mr. Louren's very unique and interesting format for this book, but after I did I really enjoyed it! Anyone looking for an exciting and expansive adventure presented with very clever storytelling should definitely give this one a try. And although what I am about to say won't make complete sense to you until you've read the book, I'll just close this review by saying "I 'think' you'll like it a lot!" Enjoy!

Review Reviewed By Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite  "Roma Gray sets the stage magnificently for her short story collection of horror tales, Gray Shadows Under a Harvest Moon: Six Trick-or-Treat Thrillers. Her stories crackle with tension and atmosphere, and sometimes you can even hear a ghoulish chuckling if you listen carefully. I particularly liked her vampire in the first story. Gray's writing is smooth and polished, and the reader quickly gets involved with the characters in her stories.'They're fun and suitably spooky for a dark evening's delight."(Excerpt from Readers Favorite)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Stories Leading to Even Greater Novels By gzim The intriguingly titled "Gray Shadows Under a Harvest Moon" by Roma Gray was an absolute pleasure to read! The book is a collection of six longish short stories that turn out to be more than just short stories: they are also the first chapters in novels of several interlinked series. The double good news is that these works make excellent stand-alone stories, while also serving to get their respective novels off to rousing good starts! Each of the stories is imaginative and original, written in an evocative, professional style, and full of interesting, well realized characters. They are all so different from each other that I am left in awe at the sweep and majesty of author Roma Gray's imagination.Feast on Fat Tuesday tells the story of a creature half ghost and half vampire that stalks and attacks vampires in the same way that vampires stalk and attack humans. But has he done his job only too well? Are there any vampires left to feed upon? And if not, what will become of this strange revenant? And Then Everything Changed recounts the discoveries of archeologists who are searching for the cause of the extinction of the advanced race that inhabited Atlantis. Could it be that they exterminated, and were exterminated by, an extinct race of intelligent, non-human beings related to dolphins? Did both races unleash weapons of mass destruction on the other race? And if so, could the archeological investigations uncover the still viable remnants of these deadly weapons and inadvertently release them on the public with deadly results? Yes, I'm afraid that these things just might be! Summer Vacation, perhaps my favorite of the bunch, tells of a teenager who was poorly treated by his family and started dabbling in witchcraft to pass the time and to put mild curses on his family members and other enemies. Then he travels across the country to live with his Native American grandmother on an island in the Pacific Northwest. He and his new friends find a mystery pit in a wooded ravine and start excavating it in hopes of discovering buried treasure, similar to the historical find on Oak Island. But meanwhile, have his spells grown into a malevolent power that he can no longer control? Very intriguing, suspenseful and atmospheric! The Invisible Carrier relates the grim story of an epidemic that is spreading through small isolated towns in the Pacific Northwest. The virus is traced back to a fruit bat that was illegally smuggled into the country. But people can't catch the infection directly from a fruit bat. There is some intermediary species much closer to mankind carrying a strain of the virus that is deadly to humans. Could that intermediary species be the legendary Sasquatch? Unnatural Disasters recounts a series of disasters around the world that have one thing in common: the disasters unleash some kind of force or effect that keeps killing people after the disasters have been abated. We follow the three protagonists of the story as they steal into the secured zone around a mega-hurricane site to try to rescue their mother. What they find instead is disturbing and quite chilling. Will the Real Monsters Please Stand Up introduces a lighter, more comic element into the series of grim disasters that we have been previously reading about. An archeologist and a surviving Egyptian pharaoh with magical powers form a strange partnership in order to find the hidden elixir of immortality and deliver it to a corrupt federal governmental agency which is holding the pharaoh's daughters hostage. The next part of the book consists of interviews with the main characters of the six stories. I must admit that I was a bit skeptical of this technique at the start, but I'm happy to say that it works! The six interviews manage to be informative about the coming novels that will build off of these short stories while at the same time being quite entertaining in their own right.Author Roma Gray has done an awesome job putting together a collection of such diverse and entertaining stories. If she has the energy and stamina to flesh these stories out into novels and series of novels as she intends to do, the reading public will be rewarded with a legacy of great books to read for years to come. I wish Roma Gray success in her ambitious project!

While the monsters may be what many will be accustomed to in the “Halloween” realm, the author went out of the mainstream to take some risks. The origins and evolution of familiar creatures such as vampires, ghosts, zombies, mummies, Bigfoot and more are highly imaginative. The format and virtual interview of characters from the stories were also unique. It was a good marriage of peculiarly original and familiar. What I liked more than the unique twists on familiar monsters was the way the author took the reader along for the ride. Her love for the genre is evident. She draws the reader into her passion for spooky stories. Upon reading the setup for the tales, the mood was definitely set. While the stories are meant to promote future works, the stories themselves hold up well enough to be considered stand-alone in nature. The short stories are precursors to novels the author has planned. The intent is to give the reader a voice on publication order. My favorite of the six stories is “And Then Everything Changed”. I don’t want to give too much away of the tale, but I can see it working as a SyFy series. It is like The Walking Dead meets Stargate, with a little bit of the X-Files thrown in for good measure. It was a fun read and would be my vote for the first novel published.Don’t skip the fictional interviews. These are devices the author has employed to give little tidbits of information to the readers in a clever fashion. I found them very humorous. Interviewing a fruit bat? Hilarious. The author has given herself a long list of future novels for publication. I am anticipating the demand will necessitate more than she has planned. She is one to watch.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. SHADOWS and Light By Katrina Mink Populated by Mardi Gras stalkers, dreaming cities and skulls that bite, Gray Shadows Under a Harvest Moon is a fun and fast-paced read. Author Roma Gray offers six tales as diverse as they are terrifying: featuring alpha predators too adept at killing to survive, warlocks that unintentionally become victims of their own magic and a mummy who just doesn't know when to stay down, these "trick-or-treat thrillers" hit that sweet spot which leaves the reader satisfied, but still wanting more.At times author Gray weaves an almost incantatory magic, evoking memories both real and imagined. Within this world, mysteries sleep just beneath fallen leaves, secrets of the autumn season our protagonists cannot resist. No matter how fantastic or unlikely their origins, Gray's characters are natural and believable, giving these tales a richness and depth that is immensely gratifying. In turn sly and beguiling, Gray effortlessly weaves a world readers demand more of. Happily, that is all part of the plan. Each of the six stories in this slim volume is the first chapter of an upcoming novel. Not only that, the second section of the book is devoted to interviews with the denizen's of Gray's fictional worlds, further embellishing the fiction. From heroes who flee their self-invoked fates to the monsters who embrace them, Gray Shadows Under a Harvest Moon is an immensely readable and compelling little anthology. Recommended!

Exiled: Clan of the Claw set up the worldview with the “dinosaur” vs. “mammal” competition—dinosaur lords enslaved the cat peoples, and a cataclysm on this part of the planet has allowed for a more overt than covert rebellion. It’s standard fare for exploring a lot of issues. What I particularly enjoyed about this book and hope is expanded in the next entry is the intriguing concept of dance magic. There’s a mix of magic and mental and manual technology. The cats follow core shamanic practices, and are the dancers. There are a lot of bard stories with magical music of instrument and voice, and there are stories with dancers as assassins, but there haven’t been a lot of dancer magicians—dancers, period—in the SFF pantheon. Dancers are usually thrown in with actors and prostitutes—entertainers and seducers. There’s the Robinson’s Stardance series, and I remember a story in which first contact on Earth was facilitated by dance as communication, but this promises a lot more depth if continued. Anyway I love how the concept’s being carried out. Yes, buy!I received an EARC for review from the publisher and Netgalley.

If the short story is good you're disappointed that it isn't a novel. This collection is by four authors I really enjoy. They produced four stories using the same universe setting and theme. The authors were S.M. Stirling, Mercedes Lackey, Eric Flint and Jody Lynn Nye. I liked Mz. Nye's story the best of the group. The trouble with a collection of short stories in which the authors have decided on an environment is the disjointed nature of the stories. Each story is adequate but hardly outstanding as the stories don't really mesh well. Considering the four authors and how good they are, I found that surprising and disappointing. The main plot of the story is the conflict between two divers species, a lizard based species and a feline based species. Simplistically cold blooded versus mammal with characteristics ascribed through stereotype. The lizards are the bad guys and the mammals are the good guys. The two groups interaction and their problems are centered around an enormous natural catastrophe. The stories were ok, probably my general dislike of short stories vs novels contributes to my lack of enthusiasm for the book.

The scenario is, today, a familiar one to science fiction fans. The world and the stars are controlled by two mega-cartels fighting for dominance. There is also one mega-union serving, not the needs of its members, but the wishes of its president. Mix in one heroic man framed for murder by one of the 3 sides. One man against the powers that be. Or is there a fourth player?

From Publishers Weekly Eden's latest brims with passion, obsession and demons as Det. Todd Brooks fights to keep Atlanta safe from a serial killer, an increasingly complex job as he discovers that his city is teeming with demons, vampires and an array of Others. It also doesn't help that smitten with beautiful prime suspect Cara Firon. All the evidence points to Caras guilt, but Todd is certain that she has been set up, even as his colleagues warn that he is being swayed by lust. Cara, meanwhile, turns out to be a powerful sex demon struggling with her own issues of right, wrong and love. A cast of creative secondary characters rounds out this romp that all but vibrates with sexual energy. (Dec.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Eden's Latest Suspenseful 'Midnight' Romance is Steamy Yet Satisfying By melindeeloo Midnight Sins takes Eden's wonderful mix of suspense, steamy romance and a world filled with paranomal entities, and gives it even more depth. Capitalizing on the cast Eden started developing in Midnight Sins, she add some new faces but it is really the additional 'fleshing' out of old her characters that bring this world and the story to life. This time our hero is Todd Brooks, the human police detective in Hotter After Midnight, who was kept in the dark about the paranormal overtones of his last case by his truth-shy werewolf partner Colin and his Captain, McNeal, who is also more than human. But Todd got an eye opening glimpse of Colin shifting at the end of the last story, so that when they try to keep the supernatural details pertaing to their the latest serial killer case from him yet again, Todd demands the truth. Our heroine is luscious Cara Maloan, a succubus who has sworn off sex until she meets Todd. Somehow she can't resist him, especially when she discovers that Todd is immune to her 'demon' mind control and she realises that what she has with Todd will not be another meaningless romp with a 'sexual puppet'. So, though Todd is drawn by lure of Cara's addictive scent, he is fully able to hold his own against a woman he desires like none he's met before. So what's the problem? The killer's victims are men found naked and bound and drained of their life force with a sex-demon's mark on their chest and Cara's the only succubus in town.I loved Todd as he adjusts to the discovery that there is so much more to the world, it something he's always sensed and it turns out that Todd also has 'a little extra'. His relationship with Cara sizzles, even as he struggles to try to fit what he knows in his heart about Cara with the evidence that keeps popping up to cast suspiscion on the lovely demoness. It was great to have the supporting cast back - really that's half the fun of reading a series. And though the starring pair Colin and Emily only have minor roles and we get more of the back story and a bit of resolution for McNeal and the Medical Examiner Smith - who also had her own traumatizing paranormal eye-opener in the last book- to reward us for our return journey to Eden's world. But the most enticing encore was for powerful, dark and sexy Niol. Eden does a great job of setting Niol up as the bad boy star for the final book in this trilogy. I can hardly wait for his story, Midnight's Master.Eden's Midnight series and shorts set in the same worldHotter After Midnight (book 1)Midnight Sin's (book 2)Midnight's Master (book 3)When He Was Bad "Wicked Ways" - shapeshifterEverlasting Bad Boys "Spellbound" - witch & demon justice dealer

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Sultry and Steamy By Tracy Detective Todd Brooks is sick of being in the dark on cases, sick of feeling like his partner...the partner he saw turn into a wolf in an agonizing cacophony of broken and reshaped bones and limbs, doesn't trust him. And he's still not sure how the heck that guy Niol tossed him across the room without seeming to lay a hand on him. He's haunted by what he's seen but he's struggling not to let it affect his work. So what if he's gotten a little testy from the burden? When a new murder case drops into his and his partner Colin's lap, evidence points hard towards the sexiest woman Todd's ever seen and he instantly wants her - bad. He should have guessed that's all is not what it seems, and as murdered men keep popping up, the suspect who every instinct inside Todd is screaming is innocent falls under closer scrutiny and Todd finds out she's got a few secrets of her own. Like the fact that she's a sex demon, for one, though Cara prefers the term succubus, and thanks to Todd no longer accepting being kept in the dark by his partner and Captain, he's already realized that the most likely perpetrator of the deaths of several of Atlanta's human male population is a succubus. Problem is, they're territorial, and Cara's the only one in town. Maybe he shouldn't have slept with her after all...I truly enjoy Cynthia Eden's writing style and her ability to put together a rousing suspense novel ripe with fantastic paranormal aspects. I think she has a near adept-level ability to wend stunning sexuality, heat, and emotion into a conflagration that sets pages on fire. I love this world she's created for her Midnight trilogy, a world in which Others such as demons, shifters, vampires, and witches work and play side by side with humanity with most humans being none the wiser. In the first book of the trilogy, Hotter After Midnight, I also thoroughly enjoyed the lead characters and their relationship, as well as the development of the mystery and suspense, and thought those two aspects worked well together.Midnight Sins wasn't quite as effective in that last area, unfortunately. We first met the good detective in that first book, Hotter After Midnight, and to be honest, I didn't like him very much. Todd's a bit too quick to fire on that temper of his and he has a tendency to walk very loudly while carrying that big stick. He struck me as stubborn, close minded, opinionated, long on ego, and not so long on intelligence. Admittedly, that impression improved when he got his own book, and his character developed along nicer paths as soon as he got a look at Cara, the succubus with the heart of gold, a sex demon who's given up sex because it leaves her feeling empty inside. To be honest, I thought the plot of Midnight Sins was a little stronger and more comprehensive than Hotter After Midnight, the danger more personal, and the motivations of the perpetrator more believable. The development and arc of the plot overall was good. I just had some difficulties warming up to Todd as a character, and I wasn't totally sold on the relationship between Todd and Cara. I did enjoy Todd eventually, and I think there was a lot of progress in his character from the previous book through to the end of this one. There were several scenes, one with Colin in particular, in which Todd's lack of prejudice and his ability to adapt quickly to a major paradigm shift became a very nice character trait. That left, however, problems for me between him and Cara. Their relationship was sexy, it was sultry, it was hot, but it didn't have a whole lot of narrative surrounding its development (it was more like 'I see, I want, I have'), and it didn't offer much beyond superficial motivations for their hook up. Cara's smokin' hot (she's a succubus, so that sort of goes without saying) and Todd's drawn to her almost compulsively, and in Cara's case, she can't mind mojo Todd when he's awake and that appeals to her. It just didn't strike me as much of a solid foundation for a long lasting relationship. Obviously, they get to know each other better as the book progresses, but I never quite got the sense of a love match, so much as a lust match.Other aspects of the book were very appealing, though. I thoroughly enjoy when books in a series include characters previously featured, like Todd's partner, the wolf shifter Colin Gyth and his lover Dr. Emily Drake, the monster doctor, from Hotter After Midnight. As Todd's partner, Colin was in several scenes with him, but there were also one or two that featured Colin and Emily alone and I thought the continuity and solidity of character definition between the first book and this one was particularly well done with them and also with the Medical Examiner Smith and the guys' Captain, McNeal.Despite not being totally enamored of the foundations of the relationship between Todd and Cara, by the end they did fit pretty well together, and the story surrounding them was enjoyable. I'm very much looking forward to the conclusion of the trilogy, Midnight's Master, to spend some time with my favorite character of the entire series so far, the level ten demon Niol. I love that he has his own book and I can't wait to read it. 3.5 Stars.Originally reviewed on One Good Book Deserves Another.

Succubus meets policeman By Helen Hancox When Atlanta detective Todd Brooks meets beautiful Cara Firon, suspect in three murders, she doesn't look like a monster to him; quite the reverse. However Cara knows that, as a Succubus, she would be considered a monster by most humans, including her former lover who tried to kill her. But Todd's world is beginning to open now he's seen his partner turn into a wolf, something Todd has tried to push to the back of his mind since that event.Cara's alibis check out but Todd can't leave her alone and it soon becomes clear that someone is trying to frame her for the murders. What is the motive? Who is doing it? As Todd learns about the dangerous underworld of the 'Others' and of the power that his succubus demon has, he has to start re-evaluating much of what he used to know about the world and about the people with whom he worked. This was an enjoyable story with the murderer not clear until almost the end of the book. I liked the way that the author described Todd's gradual learning of a new side to the world in which he lives and the glimpses into the relationships and lives of some of the other characters. The central romance was rather more a love-at-first-sight story with both characters having to learn to trust but it was still an enjoyable journey with them.Originally published for Curled Up With A Good Book © Helen Hancox 2009

A story of dark obsesssion By Shelleyrae The events in Witch Upon a Star take place twenty years before Mind Over Monsters and twenty one years before the events in What's a Witch to Do?.Anna Olmstead is just nine when she meets Asher, a dashing, centuries old vampire who rescues her from her father pimping both his daughter's magical talent and more to any one with a few dollars. Asher is her saviour, he provides her a life of wealth and privilege, love and protection and as Anna grows she is determined to always be at his side. At fourteen she becomes Asher's legal consort and later his lover, believing all of her dreams have come true. Eventually however the relationship begins to sour as Asher's true nature asserts itself, and things begin to spiral out of control. Still she can't let go, and Asher refuses to free her, until one murderous, bloody night.Almost a decade later Anna is happily married and the mother of two young sons, her life with Asher behind her, when an attempt is made to kidnap her and Anna has no choice except to confront the man she once loved with all her heart.Witch Upon a Star is not what I expected, it has none of the lightness found in What's a Witch to Do? and is much darker than Werewolf Sings the Blues though is still billed as A Midnight Magic Mystery.Witch Upon a Star is actually a story of corrupted innocence and dark obsession. There is little humour, and the themes are confronting touching on child abuse, drug addiction and exploitation. Don't get me wrong, the novel is well written and the story is quite affecting but I was thrown by the unexpected seriousness. To be fair the synopsis hints at the seriousness of the story but the whimsical title, cutesy cover and the reputation of the author for snarky humour, contradicts it. As long as the reader is aware of what they are getting into, Witch Upon A Star is a good read.

So much happened and I've been thinking about the story ever since I finished the book. Lately I don't give five stars to a book easily, at least not unless I'm truly blown away by it so obviously I loved this book. I've read every book by Jennifer Harlow so far and though it took me a while to finally get started on the book, it is absolutely a top favorite of mine by her. This book felt really different to me compared to the other two book in the series. I can't really put my finger on it but it was just unique. The story starts with 29 year-old Anna Olmstead who's happy with her life, husband and two little boys until a man tries to kidnap her and her children. There are some flashes, where you just know something happened to Anna in her past, that she escaped someone. The next chapters go back in the past from the moment Anna is 9 years old up, when she meets Asher, a vampire that's over 800 (if I remember correctly) until she's 19. We read about her when she was 9, 11, 13, 15 and eventually 19. Always on her birthday. Usually I'm not a fan of books that take you back to where a character is a child but I actually loved it with this story. I wanted to know Anna's past and the way Jennifer Harlow wrote it was just so captivating. From the moment I started reading, I was pretty much enthralled by the story and characters. I barely stopped reading until I finished.I have to say that I don't think this book is for everyone, though of course I hope everyone will give it a shot. It's pretty dark at times and there were some moments where even I was disturbed. But even so I was intrigued by Anna, the way she grew from the 9 year-old girl who was so enthralled by Asher to her 19 year-old self who finally saw what Asher was really like. I'm not sure what so say about Asher. Some scenes with him and Anna sincerely brought tears to my eyes. And I did like him when he was good to Anna. But to be honest, they were obsessed with each other from the moment they met. Asher wanted a good life for her, gave her everything she wanted, gave her the best teachers and tried to do the right thing for her when she was young, and eventually they ended up being lovers. This story is actually pretty tragic but I thought there was a sort of beauty to it too, at moments, especially the ending. Now, there are a lot of references to Jennifer Harlow's F.R.E.A.K.S. series. I'm a huge fan of tha series, especially of Oliver, a vampire who's been kind of forced to work with the F.R.E.A.K.S. And this book actually revealed how Oliver happened to join the F.R.E.A.K.S. There were some hints about that in that series, but I'm so glad to actually know the full story of that. And I must say that I loved the start of the book where a certain main character from a certain favorite series of mine appeared. *wink wink*As for the other characters, aside from Anna, Asher and Oliver, I also really liked Nathan who ends up being Anna's husband eventually. He might not be in it much, not until the end, but I adored him and he's exactly what Anna needed that Asher was not. Her two little boys were also too damn cute.Like I said before I thought the ending was actually pretty beautiful. Sure, it was sad and tragic, but there was a certain elegance to the way Anna ans Asher ended up saying goodbye to each other. Even now, thinking about it, makes me a little emotional. The story was that good and affected me quite a bit. What more can I say about this story other than that I adored it? The story, the characters, the way it was written so perfectly, in my opinion - it all was incredible!

Well written, content not for me By Kate **Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy**WITCH UPON A STAR, the third book in the Midnight Magic Mystery series, is really tough for me to write a review for. I have seriously conflicting feelings about the events of the book and while it was not poorly written, I think the content is a bit off-putting and not what one would expect from this author.Having read nearly everything Jennifer Harlow has written, I requested this book on the cover and series alone. I'm not even sure the book description was up when I requested it. However, WITCH UPON A STAR has none of the levity of the earlier books in the series, or any of Harlow's other books. In fact, I'm pretty sure I did not laugh a single time - though I felt many other emotions while reading.Touching on some really dark themes, like child abuse, WITCH UPON A STAR was engrossing and a very serious read. Unfortunately, it was not what I expected. And even had I been more aware, I think there are still aspects of the story that would have disturbed me regardless. Anna's all encompassing love for and her attempts to seduce her guardian, Asher, even at age 13, before she really knew what she was doing, despite the fact that we were in Anna's head, were still difficult to digest. While the quality of WITCH UPON A STAR matches the quality of Harlow's other books, the content was vastly different and really dimmed my enjoyment of the book. This is obviously a personal preference, and if you're aware of what you're getting going in, I think that this book could be enjoyable to some readers - with its mystery, the sweet romance between Anna and her husband, and the emotional moments, it definitely has things going for it. So, while it may not have been for me, if you enjoy Harlow's writing, and are aware of the content, you may want to give it a try.

“Your family is the most important part of your life. Your families are the people you love, and love is what separates us from scoundrels and criminals. It maintains order. Your parents, your sibling, and your Partner, are the ones you love. There should never, ever, be anyone else who comes close to that bond. You have only one best friend, and that is the person you’ll be marrying someday. We must learn to differentiate the relationships in our lives: the people we love, and the ones we don’t. It’s inappropriate, it’s foolish, and it’s forbidden to think otherwise.” Trace Bailey’s mouth is her worst enemy – somehow it always gets her in trouble. Luckily, she has a partner in crime – her best friend and neighbor since age seven, Piren Allston. He can’t get enough of her crazy sense of humor, and she loves that he’s always up for another adventure. They can’t be friends, though, not in their world. Trace and Piren were Assigned to other people at the age of six, and they’re supposed to marry their Partners when they turn twenty-four. Failure to comply leads to Banishment, a fate worse than death. Worse still is the growing realization that their bond is stronger than just friendship. In a world without freedom, there are still choices to be made. Following their hearts means losing their family, but following the law means losing each other. Forever.

By Ara the Writer *** I received an ARC in return for an honest review ***If more dystopians were like MISSING PIECES, the genre would still thrive and no one would complain about too much dystopian. Because there’s no such thing as too much great storytelling. And Meredith Tate delivers a page turner of a story.Let me be clear: debut author, Meredith Tate, remains true to fans of the genre while keeping it fresh and not relying on overused approaches. She has breathed life into a genre that has suffered in the last couple of years. The protagonists, two best friends, Piren and Tracy, are natural. They remind you of the couple you knew in school who were so good with each other. And over the years you and your friends wondered when they’d wake up. Well, in the case of Piren and Tracy, it’s not about waking up and realizing that they are perfect for each other. Their feelings are illegal because they are not paired/assigned to each other. In this world (which feels eerily familiar) even a friendship is illegal. This is a relationship that can not be.When they’re together they hum. Their dialogue flows with ease. Their chemistry is organic and beautiful. And although there were a couple of scenes where I wanted to strangle the guy, he is fundamentally a good guy. The perfect guy for her. As the name of the book implies, they are each other’s missing piece. The writing is effortless and the storytelling compelling. By mid point, the book has hit a fast stride. So when twists happen, the derailment is profound and well executed. I may have grunted in pain a few times. And can I say how nice it is that the story reaches a conclusion in this book? Maybe Tate will write a follow up, and I’d love to see how the world evolves, but it’s not required. Which makes this very atypical, but oh so welcome. I am so tired of artificially derived multi book series. Tate plays fair with her readers and delivers across the board.A fantastic book and a beautiful cover. I look forward to more great stories from Meredith Tate.

In her character driven New Adult Dystopian , MISSING PIECES spans ten years in the lives of two best friends, Tracy Bailey and Piren Allston, whose friendship pushes society's boundaries of what it means to love. Think Ally Condie's MATCHED and Lauren Oliver's DELIRIUM. But, where Condie's and Oliver's worlds focus on exposing the government's short-comings and bringing them to heal, Tate's world is character-centric. Each character is bound by the laws of society. They don't set out to change the world, just themselves...and their hearts. In MISSING PIECES, each person is paired with his/her perfect genetic match in order to produce the healthiest offspring. Children are Assigned to their future mate at birth, then revealed to one another at the ripe old age of six when they're officially Assigned to their Partner in a chilling and awkward ceremony. From that moment on, the Assigned couple is meant to interact with their future spouse as often as possible, even forced to greet each other with rote "I love yous." From the Assigning ceremony at age six, the first kiss ceremony at sixteen, cohabitation at twenty, and marriage at twenty-four, the Assigned couple's life is set out before them. Love your Partner or risk banishment. Follow the rules...not your heart. But, what happens when your Partner isn't who you're meant to be with? What happens when the Assigning system is wrong?Tate pulls at your heartstrings when she chronicles the easygoing friendship of Tracy and Piren as young children Assigned to different people. From the onset, Tracy and Piren have undeniable chemistry. You can't help but root for them. As time goes on, Tracy and Piren's friendship blossoms into something more. But, because they aren't Assigned, they must stifle their true feelings or be banished forever. With the fear of banishment ingrained into their heads, Tracy and Piren deny themselves true happiness. The banished community is the big, bad, scary unknown. But, in truth, real life is scarier. When Tracy and Piren figure this out, life takes on a whole new meaning.MISSING PIECES sucks you in and won't let you go until the very end. Tate paints a gorgeous, heart-wrenching portrait of what it truly means to love someone. Sometimes it's messy, complicated, and sacrifices have to be made in order to find your missing piece.

I was expecting to read it over the course of a few days but ended up finishing it in one sitting because I couldn't stop turning the pages. Meredith Tate's story MISSING PIECES breathes new life into the Dystopian genre. Unlike many of the stories I've read, her dystopian world fits eerily into our own, creating a new world in the very one we live in...and that's exactly what makes it different and exciting. The characters have jobs, go to school and hang out with friends exactly as we would with one glaring exception: they are matched through a computer system with their optimal mate and this rules their existence.Tracy and Piren have been friends since they were little--but they're Assigned to marry other partners at the age of 24. The story realistically builds their attraction from age 14 onward and more than that, captures all the small things that make someone appealing. Each chapter moves the story forward and switching between their perspectives allows for a greater understanding of the world they live in and the dire consequences of falling in love, which could lead to Banishment, a fate worse than death.I loved the way Tracy and Piren's relationship developed organically and their banter back and forth was fun to imagine, not a far cry from the silliness we experience with friends. Their maturity also realistically developed so despite being in my twenties, reading about a 14-year old didn't feel as though I was so old or they were so young--instead, I felt at home with this story.I'd recommend this story to anyone for the unique plotline, the realistic characters across the board and the incredible weaving of futuristic concepts into our own world. If you love a good love story and some suspense, I would tell you not to wait and order MISSING PIECES now.
