It's interesting, yes...but the three installments should NOT be called "books". If they were combined into one, then that would be a book, but they're so short on their own that I feel cheated at the price I paid for them. It ended up feeling like the author arbitrarily decided to cut one book into three parts, just as an excuse to make more money.

Yes the run ended, yes it was exciting but honestly the story doesn't end now wait for the continuation in Ruthless Run. Don't know if I want to spend more money on a story that has the potential of never ending. I'll just imagine everyone gets killed and the villains win!! Not impressed!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. good but not worth the break up price and lack of conclusion By MomBlogger Pretty good book but hate that the original novel was broken into three parts just so the author could charge the price of a full length novel for each part - each third is not long enough to be of value for $2.99 per portion! Also it is supposed to contain the "End of Savage Run series" yet the story has not ended. I hate a supposed end to a book that actually leaves more unanswered questions than a proper conclusion - so frustrating. Not sure if I want to read any more by this author for those 2 reasons.

By Bibliotropic .net Voyage of the Basilisk takes place a number of years after The Tropic of Serpents, and details Isabella’s time aboard the ship called Basilisk, and she travels around the world in search of more information about dragons. Joining her are Tom, her son Jake, and Jake’s governess, and though you’d think it would be Tom who ends up side-by-side with Isabella in the discoveries she makes, it’s actually more often her son and a newcomer to the group, Suhail, who are with her in making the most significant discoveries. Add to it the usual political dance that accompanies any trip abroad, especially at a time where countries are very much bound by their borders and the idea of a global society has yet to take hold, and it all combines into an amazing scientific adventure.It was interesting to see Jake take such a strong role in this book, since Isabella has, in the past, denied that she has much in the way of maternal instincts. Whether that’s true or not (it’s definitely possible to be a good parent without having the best instinct for it), Jake is finally old enough to be able to come along with her on her trips, getting to spend time with his mother at last and to go on display to readers of Isabella’s story (which, as with the other two books in the series, is written in the style of a memoir). Rather than just being a tag-along, he spurs Isabella into doing things she might not otherwise have attempted a few times, not all of which led to an advancement of the plot but at least provided inspiration later on. And, of course, at other times she was forced to curtail her activities for his sake. He was an active influence, rather than a passive one, and I’m curious to see if he shows up in any future installments of the series.It’s a bit disappointing that the more exciting parts of the story didn’t really get going for quite a while. Most of the real interest takes place on Keonga, and the ship doesn’t even get there until the book’s about half over. The early scenes were important for setup, such as Isabella first encountering sea serpents, and her time in Va Hing, but they did leave the story feeling a bit without direction. Adrift at sea.I do love how this Brennan uses the primary world as brilliant inspiration for Isabella’s world. Most authors do this, of course, but with Isabella’s globe-spanning explorations, you can practically superimpose a map of this world over hers and probably not be far off the mark. This is especially clear in the linguistic sense. Yelang was an analogue for China (not just some vague conglomerate of east-Asian stereotypes), and though it wasn’t expressed directly, knowing what little I do of Mandarin made it easy to figure that whenever a Yelangese term for a dragon was mentioned, leng was part of the phrase that meant, specifically, dragon. I want to say that Keonga was the analogue for Hawai’i, mostly based on the structure of names mentioned, but I’m not that familiar with Hawai’ian history and culture that I can be certain of it. Brennan works wonders with language and anthropology and biology, and it’s such a treat to read, encompassing about 90% of my own academic interests into one outstanding work of fantasy.Voyage of the Basilisk, and the books that came before it, show themselves to be unique and intelligent novels, standing tall amid other offerings on the bookshelves. You can’t help but be filled with a sense of wonder and adventure when reading them, hearkening back to childhood memories when every new day was a discovery, and the whole world was yours to explore. Brennan captures that feeling with masterful skill, gives us a new world to dip our toes into — just watch out for sea serpents! — and leaves us with characters and stories who inspire and educate and delight, all in one. It blends historical fantasy and straight-up secondary world fantasy into one seamless whole. I enjoyed Voyage of the Basilisk as much as A Natural History of Dragons, each book as strong as the one before it, and I know this is a series that I’m going to return to more than once. Any series with reread value is a good series!

Capossere Voyage of the Basilisk is the third in Marie Brennan’s series subtitled A MEMOIR BY LADY TRENT, and I found it falling somewhere between books one and two in terms of the reading experiences (better than one, not quite as good as two). As always in this series, the narrative voice is the strongest aspect and managed to (mostly) outweigh the book’s weaknesses. Warning: Some inevitable spoilers for books one and two will follow.Readers will most likely note the resemblance between the title of this work and Charles Darwin’s Voyage of the Beagle, which makes perfect sense as an analog since in this continuation of the series Lady Isabella Trent, along with her long-time colleague Tom and her young son Jake and his nanny, heads up a two-year scientific expedition a la Darwin’s trip on the Beagle. Trent offers up a nice tease though, raising expectations from a mere naturalist expedition by telling the reader that earlier accounts of this well-documented trip had been an “outright lie,” a major cover-up thanks to issues of national security.But those events won’t happen for quite a while in book time. Until then it’s a slow meander through this world’s version of our South Pacific islands as Trent continues to push back against the restrictions on women in this society to varying degrees of success even as she slowly adds to the world’s knowledge of dragonkind. I had a spectrum of responses to this section, about the first 175 pages or so.One was a sense of impatience as the plot was less than compelling and moved along at a slow, stately pace, to say the least. The structure is episodic, but the individual episodes weren’t, to be honest, all that interesting and more than once I had to resist the urge to skim a little bit. It also felt far too summative in style. Although the pace and excitement picked up in the latter half, and the story became more scene than summary, the book still felt overlong by the end and even had me wondering if it was a necessary addition to the series. In other words, though being the third book, it had the feel of the dreaded “bridge book” in trilogies — a slow-moving “filler” of a book to get from book one to book three.On the other hand, as with the other books, Lady Trent’s voice — wry, charming, dryly witty, introspective at times, highly intelligent, and supremely curious — makes up for a lot. And even if I felt the desire to skim now and then, I still fell under her spell enough so that for the most part the voice just carried me along happily. I also thought the moments, which were too few in the first half, where we saw more deeply into Lady Trent’s feelings and persona were some of the best in the book, as here, while she watches two dragons mating:More than that, I found myself envying the dragons before me … I was struck by the companionship they shared — or rather that I imagined them sharing. It is not as if they were reading the latest scholarly journal together, or doing anything else I associated with the domestic harmony of marriage. But they were mated, and according to the villagers had been so for many years. I had that briefly, and then I had lost it. Whether I would ever have it again … at the time I could not say.The other reason, beyond narrative voice, I could be more forgiving of the pace and unexciting events than I would be in another novel is that intellectually (if not readerly), I appreciated the fact that the book focused so much on science and curiosity, and in a fashion that presented them realistically. The scientific method is by its nature often slow and methodical, filled with fits and starts, and, as this book is not afraid to detail, errors. But as any scientist will tell you, failure often teaches as much (sometimes more) than success. I also like the big picture in the series of her science—that she is adding, over years, brick by brick, theory by theory, to the world’s store of information about and understanding of dragons. So one can argue that the slow pace is an appropriate one for the subject matter. That said, it’s a fine line to walk between pace and realism, and I can’t say Brennan wholly nails it.The pace does though, pick up quite a bit in the latter third, reaching at times an almost frantic pace as Trent becomes embroiled in a host of action scenes. One might even call it a bit rushed at the end, and maybe a little over-the-top pulp-heroish. So balance is a bit of a n issue overall.Meanwhile, as mentioned the moments of deep characterization of Lady Trent were some of the best, especially as regards her sense of isolation, her constant battle with the world’s view of “correct” female behavior, and her conflict between motherhood and her love of what she does. Unfortunately, other characters don’t fare so strongly. This may be an artifact of the first-person narration, but most, such as her son, the ship’s captain, and the nanny, have very little page time and so never have a chance to come alive; their presence is barely felt. This is sadly even true of Tom, who has been part of the series from the start. A new character and fellow scientist introduced to the series, Suhail, has much more page time and indeed becomes an integral part not just of the plot but of Lady Trent’s life, but even he feels a bit two-dimensional, though there are hints of complexities, and I hope we see him in future books.The only other aspect I had some issues with were how closely at times Brennan hewed to our own world. This is another fine line to walk in alternative historical fantasy, and while for the most part I felt wholly immersed in this charmingly quasi-Victorian universe, at times the analogs were so spot on they were distracting. A few examples are when she goes to see Komodo Dragons, or when she comes across Easter Island statues. Why this pulled me out I don’t know; it doesn’t bother me when Queen Victoria is mentioned, for instance, in other alternative histories. And it doesn’t bother me that this world calls horses “horses,” but for some reason calling Komodo Dragons “Komodo Dragons” was jarring. So this one I might need to chalk up to being my issue and not Brennan’s.The first book of the series is, I think, the weakest of the trio, with some pacing and plotting issues, but the voice still endeared me to the character and made me want to pick up book two, which improved in all ways on book one. Voyage of the Basilisk is a small step back; better pacing, more scene than summary, and a sharper group of side characters all would have improved the novel. But really, it’s hard to complain much about spending more time with Lady Trent.

Lesley This third entry in the Memoirs of Lady Trent series was engrossing and interesting from many different aspects. I enjoyed watching Isabella Camherst prepare for her two year voyage around the world on the Royal Survey Ship Basilisk with her nine year old son Jake, his governess Abigail Carew, and her fellow in research, Tom Wilker. I also appreciated the intellectual research aspects of the scientific discoveries a woman was attempting in a time (much resembling the Victorian era) when women were just being allowed to actually have a brain for something other than domestic sciences. The world these novels are set in can be slightly confusing with names that completely conceal any resemblance to our own familiar world, so be prepared to figure locations generally based on ships navigation and temperatures in areas of landings. Isabella and Tom are undertaking this trip to add to their knowledge of dragons from a scientific standpoint and this often means she is put into awkward social conditions based entirely on her gender.This novel in the series ends rather abruptly so it makes me sure there will be another novel to come later. Isabella had many adventures over the time period covered in this book from becoming innocently embroiled in worldwide political maneuvering, to having to give in to local customs as a way of proving to the inhabitants that she isn't a wicked spirit there to cause their destruction. Along the way she met an archaeologist with a hunger for pursuing scientific discovery as compelling as her own.Written in memoir style means that Isabella's thoughts and feelings are featured more frequently than dialog, yet the narrative did not seem to bog down because of that. The dragons studied here are definitely more from the scientific angle, but it was fun to have a chance to `get to know' one on a different level.I received an e-ARC of this novel through NetGalley.

Toumey This book was very useful in helping me decide whether to adopt React for new projects at work and at home. I particularly enjoyed the sections on Flux architecture at the end of the book. I'd read a bit about Flux, but seeing example code was helpful and the explanation of the sample apps made it click for me.

Some of these authors were familiar to me and I was excited because I had not read these stories. I read the book cover to cover and found several wonderful new authors to follow.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Obsessive and uncanny By Benoit Lelievre Anthologies are usually hit-and-miss by nature, yet an impressive set of patterns emerged from this one. Transformation means two things to people: accessing another realm of existence or transcending death. It's crazy how these two themes came back over and over again. Jennifer Geisbrecth, Christie Yant, A.C Wise, Daryl Gregory, George Cotronis, Cat Rambo and Claude Lalumière's stories all stood out to me as the best in the anthology in their own way and they circled the aforementioned themes in haunting fashion.Some of the story were too fantasy oriented for me, but XIII stands out through its themes and uncanny patterns. Worth a read.

Unique Retelling of a Favorite Classic By Kit-Kat75 (3.5) Beauty and the Beast is one of my all-time favorite fairy tales and I love reading different versions of it. Each has a unique spin and this one was no different.Prince Ever is taught to push emotion aside. He's been raised to be a warrior and has a bad temper that he can't always control. One such instance caused him to bring upon him and his kingdom a curse. The Fortress that has always guarded the people of the kingdom and is now dark--the light is gone.Years earlier, his temper caused him to push a young girl, permanently injuring her. Unbeknownst to him, he demands that she is brought to the Fortress to help him break the curse because he heard of her great strength."Sometimes we can get so caught up in protecting ourselves that we forget to see what's truly before us."I enjoyed watching the characters learn and grow. They were both pushed to their limits which brought about change. I would have liked to see a little more of their thoughts and feelings, but their struggles were real. It had elements of the original: the curse; the daughter going in place of the father; and of course, the romance. But I loved the twists the author employed.At the start we get to see our "beast" as his normal self. That is, a spoiled prince haunted by regrets of his past actions. He's not entirely likeable, but we have a good idea of how much change he must have to go through. And I do love the anti-hero type of character.When Ever is physically transformed into a shadow of his former self, it's hard for him to let go of his former pride. He's an interesting character, and I enjoyed seeing how his feelings for Isa changed him.What's funny to me is how clueless they both were at the start. All Ever knows is that he needs this crippled girl to help him break the curse. Neither of them know exactly how this is to be done, and this leaves poor Isa terribly confused. I sympathized with her the most. Despite her circumstances, Isa displayed the most strength of all the characters.I liked the small cast of characters. I think, for the size of the book, a larger cast would have been too confusing to keep up with. But I think the perfect amount of focus was put upon each of the main characters.I do wish it was longer, though--that's not such a bad complaint! I think the story could have been more fleshed out, given more detail, with more interactions between Ever and Isa. A few parts felt rushed, the curse could have been better explained, and more detail given about Nevana, the villain of the book.So, I had some small complaints here and there, but overall I really enjoyed the book. The romance was sweet and clean, and I was really happy with the ending. Mrs. Fichter, did such a great job of creating a new world where her characters were seemingly consumed and confronted by adversity at every turn, meanwhile interweaving their backstories with magic and fairy tale lore. I especially loved the symbolism of "The Fortress" and the self-actualization the main characters, Ever and Isa experience throughout the story. By the end of the book you will understand the true definition of love through the relationships of the characters. This novel will appeal to Beauty and the Beast lovers (like myself) or people who enjoy stories about conquering your fears and rising above hardship. I highly recommended this read, you will not be disappointed.

More of the same By RT Deposed vampire regents, human scientists, renegade weres, an unknown virus; the Timberwolf pack has it's hands full in book 6 of the Midnight Hunters series. It didn't take me long to sink back into the dark and mysterious world of the Praeterns. Even though it has been a year since The Magic Hunt was released, the characters and setting feel like a worn pair of sweatpants after a long day--comfortable and familiar. You can really feel the growing tension radiating from the pages as the groups at play head towards a growing conflict.All of the familiar characters are as dangerous and sexy as ever, although some of my favorites didn't get as much page time as I would have liked. I also feel like the series is starting to lack a certain amount of danger. I never felt afraid if any of the characters would pull through and as powerful as Francesca is suppose to be, she is a bit of a pushover. At first I thought the ending seemed too easy and neat, but there is enough of a twist for it not be too perfect.Those points aside, Shadow Hunt is more of what you come to expect from this series and I look forward to the next book, maybe the Fae will play a bit more of a role.

By RLynne This is the sixth book in Raand's Midnight Hunter series, and I think the series gets better with each book! In Shadow Hunt, Raand takes readers into the Faerie realm, with all of its magic, changes, and uncertainties!. Her world building skills are incredible, and her word pictures are so descriptive readers will be drawn right into this strange land. Here's a sample: "Of course. Everything in Faerie is alive, even the stones beneath your feet." "Faerie was a realm of shifting time and place and form, totally unlike the world of flesh and blood and instinct Sylvan and her wolves inhabited". In addition to more experiences in Faerie, Raand further develops the characters we've met, along with introducing new characters, conflicts, and plots which are dangerous to the characters we've come to love. I really enjoyed Shadow Hunt, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the Midnight Hunter series.

The first time I read a book from this series it was "Night Hunt," so I have always been more interested in Sophia and Niki than anyone else... though I did love the werecat from "Lone Hunt." There's something infinitely more sexy about a werecat than a werewolf to me. There should be more lesbian books like that. But on this book, there was closure for Niki and Sophia. Though with this series, there's always just been too many characters, and dare I say too much lesbianism for me. I would have loved to have had more of Sophia, and less of everyone else, but I imagine everyone has their favorites, and others enjoy the complexity of several relationships. I was just happy there was closure because I was so upset with "Magic Hunt" and it's lack of it. And I liked the little twist on it, even if predictable. Definitely the best series I've read of werewolf-type/lesfic books... I would say any out of the series being better than the rest out there, if I wasn't such a huge fan of Wild by O'Brien. And when I first read this series, I was so put off by the erotic scenes, as they are different, but it really grew on me. I now find them really original. There's a lot of original concepts in general, as well as interesting and elaborate takes on typical werewolf tendencies in the series. I've also always loved the fact that the werewolves in this series aren't the abnormal two legged wolf-human hybrid, but an actual wolf.And someone else pointed out the feeding vampire sex, and I've never been a fan of it. To be honest, I've always skimmed over the vampire feeding scenes in the books. I could have left all the vampires behind books ago, with the exception of Lara.

By SF Addict I'm a very simple person, every time I read a book I ask myself some questions at the end. Was it worth the cost? When I finished the book was a i glad that I read it? I thought this book was a bargain at it's current price and I was was happy while reading the book and happy when I finished it. But I liked the first book in this series better. At the beginning of the first book the author wonderfully described Nita's job working in the volcano, that's what hooked me and caused me to buy the novel. The end of the first book i felt had a superior ending by not only tying those loose pragmatic ends together but by tying up those loose emotional threads and some how giving a firm foundation for more of Nita's thrilling adventures to come. Truly I felt the author had wrapped things up extremely well with the novel Free Wrench and better than 98 percent of the books that I've ever read, and I've read a lot of books. Also in Free Wrench, Nita's skills as an engineer were showcased to a greater degree and I always like the engineers in any story. Scotty from Star Trek was my favorite character. Mister Lallo just set the bar extremely high with Free Wrench and to me this book while wonderful just didn't quite match it. So I am being extremely unfair and only giving it four stars.

A strong novel in the Free Wrench world By Margaret Fisk Originally posted on Tales to Tide You OverSkykeep is a sequel to Free Wrench in many ways, with the same cast and set in the same world, but it’s also an independent story. Rather than maintaining the same narrator, all the crew of the Wind Breaker are given a chance to hold the point of view, allowing us to get to know them a lot better. I’d expected from the blurb I read to find Nita driving the rescue, but that’s not the case. Without spoiling anything, I can say that each member of the crew, including Nita, had a part to play, even Wink and the newest addition, Nikita (another aye-aye), while despite being one of the captured, Nita doesn’t let a simple thing like being held in a secret, impregnable prison stand in her way.The reasons I enjoyed the Wind Breaker and its crew in Free Wrench are very evident here. The crew is full of ingenuity, strong in the face of any odds, and even if they have momentary lapses, no matter what, they have faith it will all work out–somehow. The crew isn’t a collection of geniuses, nor do they have unique skills absent from any other crew. What they have is persistence, creative thinking, and the willingness to work hard and be flexible.These characteristics are part of the reason they make friends wherever they go. The other reason being how they respect the strengths in others and do not dismiss any out of hand even when, for example, they know there are no good fuggers. Ultimately, it’s the last that makes them good people. The same actions could have made them villains but their motivations, and how they go about things, are always solid and understandable. Even better, they’re capable of seeing the motivations driving others, something that leads to forgiveness when hatred would not be out of place.There are half a dozen places where a line made me laugh, where a turn of phrase captured a situation beautifully, or where a comment speaks to a much deeper understanding of how things work than might be expecting in what is a romp and adventure. I’m avoiding specifics because they come within context that would give things away, but there are more levels to this story than the overt ones, something I always appreciate.I can give one example of their unconventional thinking from the very beginning though.The Wind Breaker is one of the few ships able to do their own repairs, thanks to Nita. She’s training the rest of the crew, a rather difficult task when the only one with technical expertise is focused on blowing things up rather than stopping them from doing so. It’s with this background that they arrive at the only port willing to do business with them because it has no fear of offending the Fug people because everyone there has already been ostracized. Nita’s skill in repairs is one of the things the Wind Breaker has to offer, and Lil volunteers to assist. None of that made me laugh though. Rather, it was Lil’s logic as she states if she has to learn this fixing stuff, much better to do so on someone else’s equipment. It’s not a mean statement to her. It’s pure logic and a perfect demonstration of her character, something a far sight from heroic but more pragmatic than villainous.Though I’d been looking forward to a continuation of Nita’s adventures, the broader focus on the whole crew was lovely and led to a strong novel without any risk of repetition. I am most definitely joining the chorus of those asking for more.

His new releases are always on the top of my reading list when they come out. However to be honest I was Pleasantly surprised with Skykeep. I liked it so much more than I ever expected I would.To get some context. This is the second book in the Free-wrench series. I had read Free-wrench when it came out and I liked it but it did not hold the same place in my heart as some of his other works. So when I heard about the sequel here I was expecting about the same. Boy am I glad I was wrong.Joseph really takes the world and characters that he created in the first book and fleshes it out even more. This book was just all around fun and exciting. The characters, the places, the world building. I read it over a couple of days and it was one of those books that was just painful to lay down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next.Well done on this one. Certainly worth your time. If you like Adventure, steampunk, pirates or if you just like good solid story telling and great characters then this is the book for you.

Great book, that has a twist or two By Broderick It was a really interesting book; at first I was thinking it was just another fantasy book, but after the first 20 pages I began to notice that his book isn't really just another fantasy book. As this book starts right off with explaining vivid details of the world and trying to let the reader decided on the likeablilty of a character. But that is not all, as this was one of the best books for it's battles. It was as if every battle was a titan vs. titan, whether it was an epic battle or a battle of emotions. This book was one of my best reads, and I would recommend getting this and throughly enjoying the content.

It's fantasy, but it feels real life. The descriptions paint a picture for the reader. I am neither a fantasy fan, nor a young adult, but I highly recommend this book.

It is much more than a dragon fantasy, it is a book about hope and treating all life with respect. The characters are well presented. Then themes of hope and equality's fight against greed and feeling of superiorty are what we need to teach our children.

23 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Loved it!! By Dan When I first picked up this novel I was skeptical due to recent supernatural novels falling short. However, I have to say that the world created by the author was truly immersive. It was a great new take on the supernatural genre. If you’re a fan of suspense action thrillers you should give it a try. It expands from a simple dark urban setting to a world rich with a culture and detailed lore of it’s own. The characters are all very well developed and the plot twists always have you on the edge of your seat. I was able to relate to the main character, Dorian, in particular. His inner conflicts were really moving. The supporting characters are also extremely memorable; Noah is super hot, and even though has a hysterically abrasive personality, will grow on you and leave you begging for more. One thing that I also loved was how I was able to envision the entire book in my head. This made the book fly by, despite its length. I definitely give 5 stars and recommend to everyone who loves vampires that don’t sparkle! ;)

I wish it were listed somewhere because I like putting myself into the shoes of the protagonist when I read and that's hard to do when I don't find men attractive. It's a good book, and I don't want to bring the overall rating down but just a heads up.

Written in a rich prose, the story line developed and emerged in a fascinating style, with twists and turns I could not anticipate. I was drawn to the main character, Babette, and found myself both impressed with and cheering on her sense of purpose---certainly not a weak female of her time!I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptive style of writing, and the dialogue was clean, clear, and distinct to each character. Although the book tied many ends, it also left enough with promise of things to come, and I look forward to Book 2 very much.

It's a BRILLIANTLY written, beautifully illustrated novel, rich in TRUE style story telling. The extremely talented G.D. Falksen pulls you in from the very first page with his every word. It feels very much like you're reading a classic novel with just enough of a modern-genre touch to keep readers from any generation hooked from the very first page!! I HIGHLY recommend this novel to ANYONE who appreciates not only true literature, that doesn't bastardize the English language, but a GREAT story that grabs you at the beginning and doesn't let go through the last page!! A++! Well done, Mr. Falksen!!!

By Kinzie Wells I became a fan of Mr. Falksen through his first series, Hellfire Chronicles: Blood In The Skies, and I knew immediately that I had to read this book when it came out. I finished it within one sitting and have reread it twice. It's beautifully written, incredibly witty, and has an amazing balance of adventure, angst, and a well thought out love story. I've laughed out loud and sometimes garnered unwanted attention by my giggle fits that ensued by some amazing, and sharp tongue dialogue in this book. I've even pouted a few times, cried, and experience a severe punch to the solar plexus. The end of this book left me wanting more.Mr. Falksen was able to merge a rich historical background with well developed characters. Each of their personalities differing from anything else he's ever published. To say that I'm eagerly expecting the second book in the series is an understatement. Buy this book, you won't regret it. The art parallel's to the gorgeous story lines adding a depth that most books lack. This book is perfection for those who have a sweet tooth for historical fiction, romance, and fantasy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice first effort, great NPCs, but some odd logic in the game play. Recommended. By Michael Demeritt Got into this module because it was the RPG Superstar winner, which means it will contain all the monsters from the finalists as well. Because this is a first time module for the writer, Victoria Jaczko, I didn't set the bar high and in that sense was fairly impressed. There is an attempt at a focus on a sandbox style chapter where the PCs interact with out-of-the-compound ranchers, trying to convince them to come in to the fortified town after a devil augmented Orc attack. Liked the concept, but the idea really broke the logic of the region of Last Wall where the story takes places. With a constant threat of Orc attacks, much less just the kind of powerful critters attracted to the carnage of the frontier, you would think any steaders would be fairly hearty stock. Alas, these distant homes were all small groups, often with children, who had a couple levels as commoners or experts, which means they should have been killed off long ago. Most of the homesteads describe would have met their ends with an encounter with a couple of wild boars. Some mercenary hires, or stronger than usual frontiersmen and women, would have been more believable. I'm sure the author intended to balance against the modules level, 3rd, but it really didn't make sense these NPCs could run a farm on their own in hostile territory. So what if they had been more powerful than the PCs? This part of the game was about convincing these hearty folk to come in - that the new threat was outside their scope.The module also had an awful lot of gift giving of magical items built in. The items so passed would equate to a large chunk of earnings of those giving them away. In this practice the module had a Video Game feeling to it: save the acolyte, he gives you a magic item he probably could not have afforded in the first place and would likely not part with perceiving an imminent invasion of his town.The module excels at character study, and gives a lot more development to Role Play and Roll Play than many stand alone modules do, and this is the reason to pick up the Daughter's of Fury. You get more of an understanding of the people in this little town, and great drives to make the PCs attach to the NPCs. The module also steps into a vastly underdeveloped area of the Golarion Inner Sea Region, which is nice, but it does not dwell on locale to the point where you cannot fit it into a home grown world (or any other published world).Plus there's some really neat new monsters!!!!!!
