Disappointed By MarketingMom I have been using various versions of PSE for years and have several "How to" books so when I just upgraded to PSE 14 I bought this book. The first item I looked up today was how to use the Dodge & Burn tool. They do a section about this on pages 211 - 213 however they only tell you what the tool likes like in the tools panel versus showing us so...I tried to find it on YouTube, no go. So then...I took out my PSE 12 for dummies and looked it up and found it there. I'm a visual learner so I like the previous versions of these Dummies books better.My advice is to keep any old how to books you have from previous versions of this software so you have multiple places to go for info when needed.

By Corwin Roubique These authors may know how to do, but they really don't know how to teach. Their explanations are sometimes word soup: what they are saying is often something that would make perfect sense to someone who already knew so didn't need to learn the thing, but to the lost soul trying to learn their descriptions are a maze. I bought this because I have had great luck with "For Dummies" books before, but these two authors really don't know how to convey an idea or a procedure well at all. They refer to a tool, but rather than simply showing an image of what the tool looks like, they describe it. Why? A picture is worth a thousand words.... Too seldom they take the trouble to show a before and after to illustrate what a tool or procedure is doing. This book is more frustrating than helpful.

16 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Decent overview of the features By Larry In Billerica A decent introduction to the features of Elements 14, but not a lot of detail. It flies over most features with barely a paragraph or two and most without example pictures. The sample pictures that are there aren't all a lot of help. Some are just after (or before? With some that's not clear). Maybe it's just me, but with some of them I couldn't see any difference between the before and after. Perhaps it's due to the reproduction method and/or their small size, or maybe production errors put the same picture in twice. If you're looking for an overview/introduction, this book will serve you fine.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. READ THIS BOOK. By Bibliophile948 If you love the First Doctor era and the historic serials, this book is definitely for you. Even if you don't, this book is still for you. A lot of times I put regular novels and Doctor Who novels in separate categories because while I enjoy the Doctor Who novels, they aren't as well written and/or lack the depth of my all time favourite novels. This novel totally breaches that category. It is extremely well written, more so than any other Doctor Who novel I have read. The plot is unpredictable and very well thought out. It is, as every good Doctor Who story should be, equal parts funny, suspenseful, deep, and just plain scary. Be warned, this is a very dark book at certain points and even pretty violent. There were a few times I even felt sick to my stomach just reflecting on how cruel, prejudiced, and fickle people can be. I think it's a very accurate portrayal of the inner workings of the Salem Witch Trials and the weaving of our beloved TARDIS team into the mix is done seamlessly. At the core of this book is the age old Doctor Who dilemma: can time really be (or, perhaps, SHOULD it be) re-written? Each of the members of the TARDIS crew has their beliefs on this issue challenged and we get a taste of each of their point of views throughout the novel. Another aspect I didn't expect was some insight into time lord telepathy, which hasn't been explored extensively in the shows. This book made me laugh out loud, cry, yell "NO NO NO NOOOOO" and cry again at the bittersweet ending. This is by far my favourite Doctor Who novel and possibly now one of my favourite books. Do yourself a favour and read it. I promise you won't regret it.

Fusion is considered by some to be the greatest scientific and technological challenge undertaken by humanity.As a youngster, Rothman spent a substantial amount of time hanging around his father's workplace, the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, one of the world's leading magnetic fusion labs. The author also spent time there as an adult leading to his writing Firebird. This, coupled with his education as physicist, has enabled him to portray an accurate picture of the climate, subculture, science and technology of fusion.In existing nuclear power plants, electricity is produced by the splitting of uranium or plutonium atoms, a process known as fission, with its downside of catastrophic meltdowns (Chernobyl), and its extensive release of long-lived radioactive materials (Fukushima). Fusion, the joining of hydrogen atoms, could provide abundant, everlasting energy, without these problems.In Fireball the action surrounds a fictitious magnetic fusion experiment, Prometheus, built in Texas with private funding. With support from a consortium of private sources, their Prometheus tokamak was built to challenge a device called ITER in a race to achieve ignition, a self-sustained plasma -- the holy grail of fusion power. The ITER tokamak is a real-world fusion experiment now under construction at Cadarache, France with billions in funding from a consortium of governments. The lion's share of ITER's funding is coming from Europe, so portraying it as a European device is not unreasonable.As Firebird unfolds, we are introduced to a cast of scientists and others with vagaries not unlike some of the individuals found working in large scientific facilities. Accurately, one of Rothman's characters describes a tokamak as "a device too complex to allow you to make it into a sensible whole." Throughout the novel, the author employs his first-hand knowledge of the myriad of subsystems essential to the operation of a real tokamak. Beyond this, readers familiar with the history of the U.S. magnetic fusion program will no doubt enjoy references to many real events thrown in by Rothman during the story, including the extraordinary worldwide hoopla over the 1989 Cold Fusion claims.Early on we are introduced to the main characters of Firebird, the lanky CFRC physicist Nathaniel Machuzak and his cohort, Yaroslav Archangelsky, with a beard and bedraggled hair worthy of Rasputin. Mac and Slava are embroiled in a series of attempts to sabotage Prometheus, allowing ITER to snatch the ignition prize. Mac and other CFRC staff have serious doubts regarding Prometheus'ability to reach ignition. Added to their troubles is an ultimatum from the mysteriously androgynous Moravec, the head of GlobeTex, CFRC's principal investor. Moravec's primary interests are wind, solar and bio. In a nutshell, he demands "that they achieve the most difficult technological feat ever attempted by the human race, a task so intractable that it had eluded fusioneers worldwide for eighty years - and that they do it in six months with a machine that might not be capable of it. With a loose saboteur thrown in for good measure."The pressure on Machuzak is heightened when he is appointed acting director of CFRC replacing the founding director, Leonard Rasmussen, who has, over time, taken mysteriously ill. Mac's new role greatly offends the Lab's deputy director, the aggressive, dictatorial Cyrus Krieg-Zuber, who was injured in a lab accident later deemed sabotage.Early on, into all this trouble comes a young, colorful, lady police officer T.J. D'Abro. To Mac, at first site, "she might have been Sally Skull or Calamity Jane walkin the streets of the old west." Determined to nab the saboteur at all costs, D"Abro is convinced at one point that Mac and his buddy Slava are the culprits. Besides being highly entertaining and engrossing, Firebird is unique in its effective marriage of fiction with the accurate ambience of a real scientific laboratory. Fascinating and frightening that though it's fiction, it may not be so fictitious. The stuff that goes on. . . You start out thinking it's political or corporate greed or competition with ITER, but it becomes more internal. The real reason for the sabotage? Hard to read because you don't want to know it runs that deep, yet hard to put down because maybe it really does.Enough scientific detail to satisfy science addicts and enough politics to disgust everybody.

It has all the twists and turns you would expect from a good mystery. Plus it's a fast paced, easy to read story of amazing science - amazing in that almost all of it is real and the rest of it is very close to being real. It reminds me of the way Asimov mixed mystery and science in "The Robots of Dawn". Definitely good for a summer reading list.

The alien water 'guzzlers' continue to suck it up; sailors in a sub get sucked in; and the resilience of the few remaining humans continues to astound the survivors. The year is 2060. Ninety five percent of the earth's population is gone. The water levels in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are shrinking to a catastrophic level. Alexia, the AI in the Biosphere with Doctors Rodriguez and Winston discovers a functioning satellite. Lolo provides images that are both incredible and astounding in nature. The images are shared with Captain Noble on board the NTC sub and they may provide the answers to the annihilation of the aliens on the Planet Earth.This is one exhilarating journey that is action packed with medical mysteries, evolving nanobots, AI's that appear to have a hint of human intelligence (not possible, or is it?) and Jeff and David (those adorable surviving brothers). How much is a human capable of absorbing before their breaking point is reached? Battle is on for Planet Earth in earnest. There are limited supplies, limited personnel but there is an overwhelming desire to win that burns deeply within these survivors.Most interesting read for me and I actually felt empathy for Alexia when she verbalized her ultimate decision to the team of the Biosphere. A fast paced book that will keep you turning the pages. Strong characters also contribute to the story line. The author is excellent with his descriptions both human and alien. I also got thirsty while reading this book just thinking about a diminishing water supply and its effect on the world.Most highly recommended.Note to author: I didn't notice a paperback available for purchase. Any plans in the future for one? Lots of people I know are older and like a book in their hands to read! Thanks.

By Paul (This review contains many spoilers, so be warned.)This series has been one long, dismal journey, and the ending fell flat on its face. All along, our heroes have gone from one miserable hopeless situation to another, with no relief in sight. I kept hoping there would be some kind of win for these poor people, but it was not to be. There were so many inconsistencies, contradictions, tired tropes, and things that just plain didn't make sense, that I can't list them all, so here are a few:They Came Here For Our Water.Stop it. This trope has been done to death. It didn't make sense in the original "V" (among many other stories) and it doesn't make sense here. Why bother pulling water up out of a gravity well like Earth when you could have all the water you could possibly want elsewhere? The rings of Saturn are almost entirely water ice, among other places.On Interstellar travel.Interstellar? Interstellar? They had an "interstellar" craft and they use it to go to MARS? Seriously? That word you keep using, I do not think it means what you think it means.On The Hoffman Mars Colony.Ahh, the much-referred-to-but-never-seen "Hoffman Mars Colony", Isn't that where the Organics came from? Wouldn't they presumably have squeezed Mars dry of all water as well? NO amount of magic terraforming can fix that. Also, who's to say the Organics abandoned their planet entirely? Might not there have been some Organics left on Mars? Did no one consider that? In which case it was foolish at best to decide to start a new human colony on the planet/former planet of their enemy.On InterPLANETARY travel.Ok, so I'm sure the Sunspot, like the Segundo Caso before it, will have a boring uneventful journey to Mars. NOT. Hello? Interplanetary space between Earth and Mars is teaming with highly advanced "multi-dimensional" beings and their ships, known to be extremely hostile. Their not going to notice one or two completely defenseless human ships heading to Mars?On the Organics.Ok, make up your mind. Either the "organics" came from Mars and decided to drain water from the next planet over (Earth) before continuing their rampage through the rest of the galaxy, OR they're "multi-dimensional" and have traveled to a thousand worlds gathering specimens from each. If the latter, why stop at Earth now? Earth should have been the first planet they milked thousands of years ago before they began their "multi-dimensional" travels. Any history of the Organics seems inconsistent. The "visions" some characters had during their visits to the Black Ships were yet another wasted opportunity to possibly communicate with the aliens or at least get some kind of motivation or understanding of their overall intentions and goals. Instead, they became cardboard cutout bad guys.Finally.There were some good things here. The human character development, the vivid descriptions of the Organics and their technology. The biosphere detail. Alexa the AI's beginning steps into self awareness. Even this came to nothing, as she ended up becoming a glorified tape recorder for the end of human history.If you're going to require a reader to spend a lot of time in your world, at least give them some resolution for their efforts. This series fell short of that.

More suspense.And I literally couldn't put it down.I was so glad I didn't have to wait years between each book in the Orbs series. I don't think I would have had the strength to last much longer than I had to to get my hands on Redemption.Without giving too much away, I can honestly say I really enjoyed how Smith ended the series. I'm a sucker for a good HEA, but I think he ended the series perfectly. A true testament to the message I believe he was trying to weave within the lines of each book. Because as much as I think Orbs 1-3 were easy-to-read, hard-to-put-down thrillers, at the end of the day, I believe Smith was attempting to whisper caution to us as a species. Take care of our resources. Be prepared. And take care of each other. And as for the HEA, I'm not sure we're going to get one in real life so the fact that Smith gave us a REALISTIC ending gives credence to the entire series. Well done! Can't wait to see what this amazing author comes up with next!!!

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. a mind-expanding look at consciousness By lenin (elion55@hotmail.com) One of McElroy's most endearing works: it is at once strange and familiar, as much of his other stuff, but its brevity makes it one of his most powerful and haunting novels. The prose is phenomenal--like Imp Plus, the narrator, it expands and grows as his bizarre mind-building experiences accumulate, turning into something more real (his voice carries him like a parent, and not the other way around) than poor Plus himself, who can only circle around the earth and never join it. His identity becomes his voice, assimilating each of his experiences and serving to sustain or remember them somehow by reporting on them. Communication here is a metaphor for being--our voice is our consciousness--and it is beautifully done.

Rogers Joseph McElroy, who claims with this book an attempt to write shorter books for a reading public with less time on their hands, has written in "Plus" an incredibly ambitious and experimental novel. He does no less than discuss the emergence of consciousness; he attempts to explain, or at least propose, the first instances of conscious intelligence. If he has, as suggested, reduced the size of the novel, he has in turn increased its complexity and density."Plus" is by no means an easy novel to read. In fact, it challenges the reader at every turn. However, to read it through, to contemplate its implications, and to finally understand it, is to take part in its achievement.

Very difficult to get into, must be read as a stream of conciousness - and NEVER stop too long to think about it. It all makes sense later, but at the very first few chapters, it's just a challenging language puzzle.

Oh, how that man could hit. No-one has ever been able to hit like Shoeless Joe.”Two years ago at dusk on a spring evening, when the sky was a robin’s-egg blue and the wind as soft as a day-old chick, as I was sitting on the verandah of my farm home in eastern Iowa, a voice very clearly said to me, “If you build it, he will come.”The voice was that of a ballpark announcer. As he spoke, I instantly envisioned the finished product I knew I was being asked to conceive. I could see the dark, squarish speakers, like ancient sailors’ hats, attached to aluminum-painted light standards that glowed down into a baseball field, my present position being directly behind home plate.In reality, all anyone else could see out there in front of me was a tattered lawn of mostly dandelions and quack grass that petered out at the edge of a cornfield perhaps 50 yards from the house.Anyone else was my wife Annie, my daughter Karin, a corn-coloured collie named Carmeletia Pope, and a cinnamon and white guinea pig named Junior who ate spaghetti and sang each time the fridge door opened. Indulge yourself – settle yourself down to enjoy some of the best fiction there is – you deserve this feast – you know you do By Bill Baker Such a rich feast of 27 or so courses – courses so varied, but everything a reading gourmet could wish for – laugh out loud tales and stories so heartfelt that you will be thinking of your own life and the lives of others close to you.I had always thought Kinsella wrote mainly about baseball – how wrong I was – his range is as great as the best chefs in the nation – well, for the world from where I sit.Indulge yourself – settle yourself down to enjoy some of the best fiction there is – you deserve this feast – you know you do!

A work of astonishing range and great narrative voice By The Barefoot Photographer I received this book free for review from NetGalley for an honest review. Despite the privilege of receiving a free book, I’m absolutely candid about it below because I believe authors and readers will benefit most from honest reviews rather than vacuous 5-star reviews.The nutshell on this book is that it contains about three dozen of Kinsella's best short fiction from "How I got my Nickname" to "Shoeless Joe Jackson Comes to Iowa". Kinsella's narrative range is profound as he slides effortlessly from almost the almost biographical to what I would categorize as stories worthy of a Twilight Zone episode.Kinsella doesn't just focus on the sports he's known for though. He is unafraid to delve into the bowels of history for his subject matter. The author is all over the board in his work and it's delightful to slide from one story to the next just to see where he'll end up next. As a reader only remotely acquainted with the author before receiving this galley I was exceptionally pleased to see everything he had to offer.PS: I hope my review was helpful. If it was not, then please let me know what I left out that you’d want to know. I always aim to improve.

Kinsella's novels about baseball (Shoeless Joe on which the movie "Field of Dreams" was based, Butterfly Winter, and Iowa Baseball Confederacy), and even though I am not a great fan of baseball, I am a great fan of Kinsella's stories about baseball with the added use of magical realism. I began to read his short stories about Canadian Indians and fell in love with the content of the stories and especially his characters. I couldn't tell you the names of many of the characters a little while after I have finished a book, but I remember Kinsella's. I highly recommend that everyone who hasn't already done so should read Kinsella's novels and short stories. The Essential W. P. Kinsella has a mixture of everything and is a good place to start.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great book, especially for non-programmer beginners By Thomas Murphy I strongly recommend this book. Well written with complete code, a strong tour of Processing and its wider ecosystem. The only caveat I would add is that if you have any programming/computer science background, a lot of this will be non-applicable to you and you'll skim through about 60% of the book to pick up the Processing-specific syntax.

My kids love the interactivity of the lessons and the accessibility of the code. Thank you, Dan for this book! It's the best one out there for beginner programmers!

About the Author Melissa C. Water was born and raised in a small town in Quebec, Canada. She grew up trying to write novels but never finished them. Her High School English writing teacher inspired her to continue to write poetry and stories, and also inspired her to believe in her abilities as an author. Melissa wrote her memoir of her time in a psychiatric ward for self-harm and bulimia, as well as writing a comical yet dramatic science fiction series for young adults. Today Melissa lives in Montreal, Quebec. She is a mental health activist who raises awareness on YouTube for multiple mental health conditions, and the neurological condition known as Tourette Syndrome. She appears on YouTube as Idranktheseawater.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Different but a good read. By C. Pratt Honor is a typical teenager, though it was hard to pin her age down. She seemed a bit immature especially when she discovers that she's different. The two protagonists are a bit flat. The boyfriend is nice and supportive. THEN she discovers she's been "modified". She suddenly develops super powers. Aside from manipulating air, time and finding she can become invisible the promise of these powers is only hinted at by the protagonists. We are introduced to two characters and briefly several more but their agenda is never clearly delineated. In short Honor was created for a purpose but it's never made clear why for for whom.All in all it's a pretty good story. It's different and I enjoyed it.

A great first novel By Amazon Customer Take the voice honest voice of Merissa Meyer (Scarlet: the lunar chronicles), the honest flow of Margaret Haddix (Among the Hidden), and the Gallic sensability of Suzanne Martel (Quatre Montréalais en l'an 3000 ) and you get Water's book Saving Honour. A pretty good read with a strong voice and strong readability thjs a boom for all if us who feel a little different at times

Honor finds out she has some abilities and what she chooses to do with them is part of the book. This book made me think of Supergirl and Superman a little. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
