By Steve Costa No spoilers or book jacket remarks here folks, just simple bits of advice:First of all, I know I am only talking to readers who have not yet read the Wasteland Chronicles... If you had, you would have already bought this title and had NO use for the opinions of anyone else. Heck, you'd like already been through the foreword and well into chapter two by now!So for those of you who ARE reading this, I strongly recommend you read this book but STRONGLY recommend you start with the Wasteland Chronicles first! While this book surely stands alone, the Chronicles was an awesome series and having lived through the events within you are so much better placed to enjoy this new world centuries after the end of the Chronicles.A fresh, inventive spin in the PA genre. Well written, creative and with a depth of characters that had me thinking he was a much older fella... Suspension of disbelief comes easily, but there is NOTHING predictable about the plotlines or characters. This kid weaves a world that you just disappear into, and the pages spin past without you even being aware of our version of Earth.I'm knocking on 50 and have been inhaling Post Apocalyptic fiction for decades... It's not easy to either please or surprise me but Kyle West has managed to do both.If you have not read the Wasteland Chronicles yet, PLEASE DO before you read this

By Amazon customer dinab Terrific follow-up to the author's series "Wasteland Chronicles". Your drawn into this new world of a changed earth with its new landscape and changed people. The change not only entails new religion's, politics but a communities way of living; its also now a world of people with new abilities. All these changes have occurred during the four centuries that have passed since "Xenofall", the last book in the " Wasteland Chronicle " series. Author Kyle West has once again written a story filled with strong, intriguing characters and words that describe both the visual beauty and at times terrifying changes that have occured to our world. If you've read any of my reviews you know I hate giving spoilers, so I strongly recommend you get this book and read for yourself what has happened to our civilization since we were "saved" from a centuries old and terrifying enemy.

Such a good book By Connor Kelly I'm not all that great at giving detailed reviews, but I will say that this book was well worth the wait for people who have read The Wasteland Chronicles. I started the original series last year after having not read for a very long time and was instantly pulled back into the world of books. They were written so well that I would often find myself staying up well into the night just to read another chapter or two, and Prophecy was the exact same way. This world is my very favorite to be in and I can't recommend this enough.

The Anxiety Toolkit: Strategies for Fine-Tuning Your Mind and Moving Past Your Stuck Points, by Alice Boyes Ph.D

Review “The Anxiety Toolkit provides quick, simple and practical tips that the anxious person can use now.” —Robert L. Leahy, Ph.D., Director, American Institute for Cognitive Therapy “In this innovative handbook, Dr. Boyes identifies common habits that underlie different types of anxiety.  She then offers clear strategies to drop the fight and become more gentle with ourselves. If anxiety has limited your life in any way, this book is an excellent place to start the healing process.” —Christopher Germer, PhD, Clinical Instructor, Harvard Medical School; Co-editor, Mindfulness and Psychotherapy; author, The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion   “The Anxiety Toolkit is an investment in wellness. Based on years of clinical practice and research, Dr. Alice Boyes has written a real-world roadmap for all of us who struggle with making decisions and feeling stuck.” —Chris Guillebeau, New York Times bestselling author of The Happiness of Pursuit and The $100 Startup “Buying self-help books is much like buying furniture that requires assembly---the picture on the cover always looks great but what really matters is the clarity and usability of the instructions inside. Alice Boyes' mastery at breaking down psychological concepts and strategies into easy-to-understand clear steps anyone can apply, the many self-assessment quizzes she provides, and the overall thoroughness of her approach makes The Anxiety Toolkit an incredibly useful and practical book. If you suffer from anxiety or think you might and are serious about changing how it impacts your life, this is the book for you!” ---Guy Winch, Ph.D., author of Emotional First Aid and The Squeaky Wheel “I have read many books on how to manage and work with anxiety. This might be the most powerful and accessible. Why? Because every strategy in here is based on the best scientific evidence available. Many readers will improve the quality of their lives with this toolkit.” ---Dr. Todd B. Kashdan, author of OK: The Upside of Your Dark Side: Why being your whole self - not just your “good” self - drives success and fulfillment"An easy-to-follow...workbook on understanding and managing anxiety...Boyes’s tone is friendly but never saccharine, and endlessly practical. Her tips and exercises, drawn from cognitive behavioral therapies that she herself has administered, should make a valuable reference for anxiety sufferers, and an ideal companion to readers undergoing psychotherapy themselves."---Publishers Weekly"Therapist Boyes' "toolkit" is filled with "nuts-and-bolts" remedies for combating anxiety-driven inertia. Boyes, who claims that she, too, has been "anxiety-prone," begins by explaining that anxiety itself isn't the problem. It can actually be beneficial by making us more cautious and methodical in our tasks. The problem lies in how we become trapped by our real or perceived fears and are unable to act. Boyes concentrates on five areas—hesitancy, rumination and worry, perfectionism, fear of feedback, and avoidance—where anxiety can lead to bottlenecks. She begins each chapter with a quiz, allowing readers to gauge their needs, and then offers "experiments" suggesting specific, safe breakthrough techniques such as visualizing positive alternative outcomes or remembering successes. The therapist takes care to suggest nonthreatening options and to remind readers that working with their tendencies, not against them, delivers greater results. Far from the pat "don't worry, be happy" approach, Boyes' practical, easy-to-follow methods will be reassuring and useful to a wide range of readers."---Booklist

PART 1

Understanding Yourself and Your Anxiety

CHAPTER 1

How Anxiety Works

Does any of this sound familiar?

   • You overthink before taking action.   • You’re prone to making negative predictions.   • You worry about the worst that could happen.   • You take negative feedback very hard.   • You’re self-critical.   • Anything less than extraordinary performance feels like failure.

If yes, you’re not alone, and you’re probably suffering from some degree of anxiety. Anxiety is an emotional state characterized by feelings of worry, nervousness, and unease. Anxiety disorders affect 40 million Americans over the age of 18, and “everyday anxiety” affects a far greater number.1

Based on research, we know that similar psychological mechanisms underlie all types and degrees of anxiety, even if forms of anxiety can look very different on the surface. No matter how your anxiety manifests itself, you’ll find the information you’re about to read relevant and useful, whether you have an anxiety disorder or are, like me, just anxiety-prone by nature.

How Anxiety Works

Anxiety shows up as a variety of symptoms, from behavioral and emotional to physical and cognitive (which just means thoughts). No anxious person has the exact same set of symptoms, but everyone has some of each type. See the table on the next page for examples of each component.

Although anxiety can sometimes seem like a flaw, it’s actually an evolutionary advantage, a hypervigilance system that causes us to pause and scan the environment. Feeling anxious triggers us to start looking out for potential threats. If you detect a potential danger, it’s not supposed to be easy for you to stop thinking about that threat. While that’s great when you’re a caveman worried about protecting your family, it’s not as great when you’re an employee convinced you’re getting fired.

For many of us who suffer from anxiety, our anxiety alarms fire too often when there isn’t a good reason to be excessively cautious. Why does this happen? We may have more sensitive anxiety systems. Or we may have been doing things to decrease our anxiety in the short term, such as avoiding things that make us feel anxious, that have actually increased it in the long term.

Having some false anxiety alarms—where you see threats that don’t exist or worry about things that don’t eventuate—isn’t a defect in your system. Think of it in caveman terms: In a life-and-death sense, failing to notice a real threat (termed a false negative) is more of a problem than registering a potential danger that doesn’t happen (termed a false positive). Therefore, having some false anxiety alarms is a built-in part of the system, to err on the side of caution.

People feel anxious when they step outside their comfort zone. Avoiding stepping outside your comfort zone would lead to living life less fully. Since I’m anxiety-prone by nature, almost every major decision I’ve made in my life has involved feeling physically sick with anxiety. If I weren’t willing to make decisions that lead to temporarily feeling more anxious, my life would be much emptier than it is today.

Reducing your anxiety to zero isn’t possible or useful. Anxiety itself isn’t the problem. The problem occurs when anxiety gets to the point that it’s paralyzing, and you become stuck. I think of these bottlenecks as anxiety traps. We’re going to work on managing your responses to five anxiety traps: excessively hesitating before taking action, ruminating and worrying, paralyzing perfectionism, fear of feedback and criticism, and avoidance (including procrastination).

The reason I’ve chosen to focus on these particular five traps is that I’ve found them to be the common threads that affect virtually all of the anxious clients I’ve worked with. The traps are self-perpetuating because they generate additional stress. For example, someone hesitates so much that she misses important opportunities, and this leads to being financially worse off. Or someone avoids feedback and then isn’t alerted to real problems that could have been rectified earlier. When people are caught in any of the five anxiety traps, they often fail to see the big picture and don’t problem-solve in effective ways. Learning how to navigate these bottlenecks will allow you to manage your anxious tendencies so that you can pursue your goals in life, whatever those goals may be.

How will this book help you learn to successfully navigate your anxiety stuck points? The tools presented here are based on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is widely regarded as the most effective type of treatment for anxiety and has decades of research behind it.2 The term cognitive behavioral just means that the approach focuses on both thoughts and behaviors and emphasizes that this dual focus is the best way to get results. It’s more accurate to say cognitive behavioral therapies, since the term actually refers to a family of therapies that have the same underlying principles. However, most people just say “cognitive behavioral therapy,” and I’ll use the terms interchangeably for convenience.

There are three main things you’ll need to successfully navigate your anxiety bottlenecks. The first is self-knowledge about the thinking and behavioral patterns that have caused your anxiety to develop and persist. We know what these are from research on anxiety, and I will discuss how you can learn to recognize them.

The second essential element is a set of tools for coping when you find yourself caught in the web of anxiety. I’ll share a toolkit of strategies that will help you unblock your anxiety bottlenecks, so you can head toward your goals and feel better.

The third piece of the puzzle is some general confidence in yourself. You’ll need to believe you have the capacity to use the information and tools provided to solve your own problems. If you don’t have this self-belief just yet, we’ll work on it together—particularly in Part 3.

Why This Book Is Different

You may be wondering if this is going to be one of those saccharine, stick-a-smiley-face-on-it, positive-thinking books. Heck no. The traditional “Don’t worry, be happy” message rubs me the wrong way because I like to feel prepared for things that could go wrong. And I know a lot of other anxious-by-nature people who feel the same way. Many anxious people have had a lifetime of people telling them “Don’t worry,” “Don’t stress,” “Don’t overthink it.” As a result of constantly being told to just relax more and chill out, anxious people often end up feeling like there is something fundamentally wrong with their natural self. The “Don’t worry, be happy” message ignores research showing that there are benefits to both optimism and what’s termed defensive pessimism.3

Successfully navigating anxiety involves learning how to accept, like, and work with your nature rather than fighting against it. Personally, I like my nature, even though I’m anxiety-prone. If you don’t already, I hope you’ll come to understand and like your natural self too. Once anxiety isn’t impeding you, this will be easier to accomplish. If you take nothing else away from this book, understand that there’s nothing wrong with having a predisposition to anxiety. It’s fine to be someone who likes to mull things over and consider things that could go wrong. If you’re not spontaneous or happy-go-lucky by nature, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that either. It’s fine to consider potential negative outcomes . . . as long as you also:

   • Consider potential positive outcomes.   • Recognize that a possible negative outcome isn’t necessarily a reason not to do something.   • Recognize your innate capacity to cope with things that don’t go according to plan.

In the coming chapters, you’ll learn some tips and tricks for switching out of anxiety mode when the volume gets turned up too high. You can use these micro-interventions to handle times when you find yourself overchecking, overresearching, overthinking, or being unwilling to try something that’s important to you because of the chance that something might go wrong. You don’t need to fundamentally change your nature; you just need to understand your thinking style and learn tricks so you can shift your thoughts and behavior when it’s advantageous to you to do so.

Another way this book differs? I’ve learned from the adults I’ve worked with that they want to understand the principles behind the advice they’re being sold. They want to adapt specific strategies to suit their personality, their lifestyle, and their goals. This book will give you the tools and encouragement to do that. I’m going to help you navigate, but ultimately you are the driver.

How Did I End Up Writing This Book?

Even though I don’t have an anxiety disorder, I’ve always been anxiety-prone. I was the type of kid who refused to go to camp because I was terrified that the camp leaders would make me eat food I didn’t like or tell me off for something I hadn’t meant to do. In the days leading up to a new school year, I would get so stressed out about having to adjust to a new teacher that I’d feel physically sick.

Before I started graduate school, I had very little understanding of my own anxiety. I then trained in clinical psychology, which is the psychology of treating disorders, like panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and eating disorders. During my training in cognitive behavioral therapies, I noticed how much CBT was helping me understand my own thinking and behavioral patterns. I wasn’t using the exact techniques used to treat clients with clinical problems, but I used the principles I was learning to change my thinking patterns and ways of reacting to stress.

When I graduated and started my own practice, I found that the initial problems people came to see me for would often resolve relatively quickly using a CBT approach. For example, when people came for treatment of panic attacks, they would often stop having panic attacks quite quickly. If they came for depression, their mood would frequently lift quickly to the point they wouldn’t be considered clinically depressed anymore. When people came for problems with binge eating, they would often break the cycle of bingeing and dieting after just a few weeks of treatment. These people weren’t problem-free at this point—they just weren’t showing their main symptoms anymore. They still had a lot of questions about how to cope with anxiety and stress and needed additional skills for doing this. The therapies I’d learned didn’t seem as useful for this stage of the treatment process, so I started developing my own materials. I was guided by my clients, by research findings, and by what I know works for me in terms of coping with life and anxiety.

I began sharing the materials I’d developed on a blog, and was soon approached by magazines to give expert tips for their stories. I found there was a lot of interest in learning how to use cognitive behavioral tools to solve everyday problems. This interest often came from people who struggled with a degree of anxiety but didn’t have clinical disorders. I also noticed that people who had anxiety disorders would come to see me for treatment based on information I’d written on my blog or in magazine articles. The information they were finding useful was about general cognitive behavioral principles but wasn’t necessarily specific to their disorder.

As my career progressed, I began to specialize in adapting CBT principles into tools that can be used for dealing with everyday problems, especially anxiety. Because I trained in both clinical and social psychology, I am able to incorporate knowledge from both areas. As a result, my approach is a bit different from other people’s. I’m able to blend information from social psychology research (about how people generally think and behave) with that of clinical psychology.

The tools you’ll learn about have not only worked for me but have also worked for my clients, and I hope they’ll work for you too. I continue to use virtually all of the principles I’m going to share with you. Because it’s been more than 10 years since I started my training in CBT and because I use the principles and tools every day, I now use extreme shortcut versions of the tools themselves. The more you practice, the more you’ll develop your own shortcuts.

What’s Coming Next

This book is divided into three parts. Part 1 lays the groundwork for you to understand how anxiety works and better understand your nature. In Part 2, each chapter deals with a specific anxiety bottleneck. For each bottleneck, I’ll provide you with a toolkit of actionable strategies to unblock it. In Part 3, we’ll cover how to integrate the material into your life going forward and proactively troubleshoot problems that people often encounter. I’ll also offer suggestions for ongoing self-development work that goes beyond the anxiety focus of this book.

From this point onward, each chapter in the book begins with a quiz so that you can gauge how relevant that particular chapter is likely to be for you and get a sense of the learning aims for the chapter. Each quiz question requires you to answer A, B, C, or (sometimes) D. The content of the chapter will help you move toward the A answers.

Within each of the chapters in Part 2, we’ll cover recommended thinking shifts and then behavioral shifts. For each thinking shift, there will be a thought experiment to help you make the change. You’ll probably want to keep a notebook handy while you read for completing these experiments.

Use This Book in the Way That Works Best for You

You can interact with the material I’m sharing however is best for you. Remember: You’re aiming to build your own personalized Anxiety Toolkit by finding strategies you like and adapting them to suit yourself.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

This book is intended as a reference book. You can dip back into any chapter as required. Come back to the material when you need to get insight into a problem you’re having or when you want to try something new (like when you’re in the mood to try a new recipe). If you start to feel a sense of information overload, stop reading once you’ve gained an insight that you want to implement in your life. You can always come back to the rest of the material whenever you feel like it.

You may notice that thinking and reading about anxiety causes you to feel some of your anxiety symptoms. The times when this happens can be a bit random. If it happens one day, it won’t necessarily happen the next time you pick up the book. To be honest, there are times when writing or talking about anxiety triggers anxious feelings for me. This is all par for the course, a course we’ll be navigating together. If reading about anxiety is making you anxious at any point, you can choose whether to keep reading and see if it naturally subsides or put the book aside for a few days.

You also may find reading to be a more comfortable state than doing. You may find yourself reluctant to try the suggested experiments because you’re not 100% sure if they’ll work for you or if you’ll do them perfectly. The key is to realize that you can’t wait for those feelings and concerns to go away before giving things a go. You’d likely be waiting forever. The good news: Taking any action while feeling a sense of uncertainty will make it easier to take action the next time you’re feeling uncertain. Focus on what feels doable, even if that’s just a few bits and pieces.

Many people with anxiety have problems with more than one type of anxiety—for example, problems with worry and social anxiety. If this is you, then you’re likely to find the transdiagnostic (that is, not disorder-specific) approach this book takes particularly useful. If you think you may have a clinical anxiety problem, like social anxiety disorder or panic disorder, then you’re likely to benefit from, at some stage, working through a treatment package that’s specifically tailored to the problem you have (see TheAnxietyToolkit.com/resources for some suggestions). However, the material in this book will complement that work.

Lastly, sometimes good general advice isn’t good advice for you. Part of learning to like and accept your nature is empowering yourself to ignore advice that doesn’t gel with you. Here’s an example: Long before I considered writing a book of my own, I started going to see authors on their book tours. At virtually all these talks, someone in the audience asks the author about his or her writing process. Most authors say they get up at the crack of dawn because they need uninterrupted writing time before their children get up or before they go to their day job. However, at one recent discussion, an author said he writes in little snatches of time throughout the day, whenever he gets an idea—often while he’s at work. This sent a hush over the room because it didn’t fit the accepted wisdom or the advice the other authors on the panel had given. However, this author had clearly learned to understand his own nature and to ignore advice that didn’t work for him.

If you find yourself feeling unwilling to try something in this book, move on from that section. Find something you feel willing to try and start there. Find what works for you based on your preferences and the stage you’re at. If you try suggestions and they fizzle, or some of the advice doesn’t work for you, feel free to ignore it. That’s simply part of beginning to accept your nature. Let’s continue to work on that now.

CHAPTER 2

Understanding the Multidimensional You

This chapter introduces some core personality and wiring concepts that will help you understand how your mind works. Awareness of these aspects of your nature will help you better understand your anxiety.

Take the following quiz to see how this chapter pertains to you. Choose the answer that best applies. If no answer is the perfect fit, pick whichever is the closest.

1. How well do you understand your fundamental nature?

(A) I have a good understanding of what motivates me and what causes me to feel emotionally balanced or unbalanced.

(B) There are some aspects of myself I don’t understand.

(C) There are many aspects of myself I don’t understand.

2. Do you ever feel like your natural instincts are in conflict? For example, you want to reach for new opportunities, but then your instinct to worry about what might go wrong kicks in and you freeze up.

(A) I can keep a balance between being focused on potential rewards and worrying about things that could go wrong.

(B) Sometimes.

(C) Yes, this gets in my way a great deal.

3. How well do you understand what tends to overstimulate you? For example, too much social contact or abrupt changes of plans.

(A) I understand what leaves me feeling jangled. My life is set up to minimize these occurrences and to allow me to effectively reset when I do get overstimulated.

(B) I’d like to understand this better.

(C) I haven’t thought about this.

4. Are you able to distinguish between conscientiousness and perfectionism?

(A) Yes, I recognize how striving for perfection can sometimes result in being less conscientious overall.

(B) Theoretically yes, but in practice I frequently confuse the two.

(C) They seem like the same thing to me.

5. How easily are you able to recognize useful types of care and caution vs. times when care and caution become paralyzing?

(A) I can see when being careful and cautious is an asset and when it isn’t, and can adjust my behavior accordingly.

(B) Sometimes I realize that I’m being too careful or cautious, but I seem to have no control over it.

(C) If I’m being excessively careful or cautious, I usually don’t notice this until long after the fact, if at all.

6. How easily are you able to moderate aspects of your nature? For example, if you’re very persistent, can you moderate your behavior in instances when taking a break is a better idea than continuing to bang your head against a problem?

(A) Most of the time.

(B) I’m hit or miss at this.

(C) No.

Here’s how to interpret your scores. If you scored:

Mostly A’s

You understand yourself well and can moderate any strong tendencies you have so that they work to your advantage and don’t cause problems for you. While you may not need all the information in this chapter, there’s likely to be at least one or two nuggets of useful info for you here.

Mostly B’s

You understand yourself to some degree but sometimes have difficulty moderating dominant tendencies that might not be the best match for a particular situation. This chapter offers you the opportunity to develop an even more advanced and nuanced understanding of what makes you tick.

Mostly C’s

You may recognize there are ways you seem different from other people, but you feel either confused or ashamed about these. This chapter will help you better understand your nature and how you can best work with it to minimize excessive anxiety. The chapter will also help you recognize times when you get caught up in counterproductive types of care and caution.

To better manage your anxiety, you don’t need to understand the average anxious person—you need to understand the multidimensional you. By multidimensional, I mean understanding your nature beyond just your predisposition to anxiety. For example, someone who is anxious and agreeable will be different from someone who is anxious and disagreeable. Very agreeable individuals might react to anxiety by agreeing to things they feel uncomfortable with. Disagreeable people might react to anxiety by nitpicking others’ ideas or seeing only the flaws in plans, leading them to opt out of potentially exciting collaborations.

17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. A book that delivers! By Toni Bernhard Self-help books contain a lot of advice, but can be hard to apply to our lives. “The Anxiety Toolkit” is different. It focuses on what we can do, right now, to make our lives better. The book is uniquely interactive: Dr. Boyes doesn’t lecture us; instead, she invites us to participate by taking valuable (and often fun) self-assessment quizzes that help us pinpoint the ways in which we self-sabotage our happiness. Dr. Boyes then discusses practical strategies—backed by sound research—to free ourselves from being slaves to anxiety. This book teaches us how to live life fully. You won’t be disappointed.

Werewolves are mean vicious creatures that turn every full moon and kill everything in sight. Vampires can’t control themselves for shit, they eat everything from animal to humans, and nothing can change that. Fairies are mean, chaos creating punks that enjoy other’s pain. Witches can be decent, but if they tap into the wrong power they can really ruin your day. Demons walk the earth. Guardians save the World. Everything we thought we knew was wrong. Not all Werewolves were mean and vicious creatures only out for blood, some actually have control. Vampires still can’t control themselves for shit, but some are being forced to as they walk around in the daylight. Mean, chaos creating Fairies are actually not the majority of the species, they are mostly civilized and controlled. Witches may be decent but they are deceitful and far more powerful than we ever knew. Demons can only walk the earth with help, and where they walk, they destroy. There is so much more that we were never aware of, but we are going to find out, whether we want to or not. The Guardians are here to keep all citizens safe. It’s our duty to protect the innocent and punish the guilty. It’s what we were born to do, what we want to do. We live for the job and we die for the job. The job of saving the world.

By meigan Fans and those familiar with the Rune Alexander series know that with each installment, the story within will have plenty of heartbreak, loss, and despair. While Shiv Crew will never admit defeat where it pertains to the seemingly endless battles against numerous enemies that threaten River County and Spiritgrove, they at least have the common sense fight until the end, regardless of the outcome. They know that with each new battle lives will be lost, relationships will be tested, but one thing they never do is quit, either the fight or each other. They are Shiv Crew, fighting together, always together, is what they do. Are they always victorious? Absolutely not, and that's one aspect I particularly love about this series: Laken Cane isn't afraid to break her characters and put them through hell.In Wormwood Echoes, a new, faceless enemy is after the Others: a strange disease that makes Others rot from the inside out. First brought to their attention by the new vampire master, Simon Kelic, it soon comes to light that the disease doesn't only affect vamps. It's an equal opportunity disease, striking anything Other. Rune knows that she has to tell someone at the Annex about the disease, but such a decision puts Rune in a bind. Simon is someone she's grown to like, someone she can trust to lead the vampires in a respectful way, so unlike his predecessor, Nicolas. Having the Annex know about the disease will make Rune and her Crew take action against the vampires by wiping them out. With two Others in Shiv Crew, Rune and Lex, they go to battle but aren't prepared for the potential consequences: fighting diseased Others puts them both at severe risk for also becoming infected.Wormwood plays such a pivotal role in this particular book, as if the title didn't already give it away. While the cemetery has always been a very important place in this series, many revelations have come to light and a certain member of the graveyard has surprising information concerning not only the disease, but of Rune herself. One of Shiv's enemies holds the key to the cure, but the cure can only be obtained by traveling to their realm. Rune, being the leader and the Monster, knows that the journey will be hers to take, only she doesn't know how and she doesn't know when. It's only when she hears the echoes of Wormwood that she figures it out.Never have I been more flabbergasted at the end of a book before. In Wormwood Echoes, Laken Cane threw some super twists and surprises out, all of which left me with my mouth gaping open at the end. I absolutely love the different direction she took with this installment and cannot wait to see what's in store in the upcoming books. Things are always changing for Shiv Crew and Rune, but never have things happened on such a monumental level before. The Crew we leave at the end of this book is dramatically different than the one we've grown used to. Members are broken, some are missing, everyone has been deeply affected by the events in Wormwood Echoes. The future of Shiv Crew is certainly on shaky ground and it's anyone's guess if they will make it back to the Crew of before. As I've said before about this series and author, Laken Cane isn't afraid to torment both her characters and consequently, the readers who have grown to care for said characters. If you're a fan of dark and dirty urban fantasy with a little bit of horror mixed in, I absolutely recommend the Rune Alexander series. It's all of the abovementioned and more with a wonderful cast of characters and gritty, bloody, oftentimes bleak storylines. Laken Cane doesn't do rainbows and sunshine, but she manages to brighten the pages with a little humor and some sexy times. Really looking forward to the next book of this series, especially after the mother of all cliffhangers found at the end of this book.**Many thanks to Laken Cane for providing an advance copy in exchange for my thoughts and an honest review.

I'm sitting here a bumbling mess... Trying to form a coherent thought and put it into sentences for my review. What the !!!! Oh God bless poor Rune. My heart is shredded to pieces for her. I can only imagine how she must be feeling right now in this strange new place... All alone and yet not...Laken, you kept me sitting on the edge of my seat. I didn't want to put the book down and when I finally did at 2 am, I dreamt I was watching the events unfold through translucent eyelids! You're writing and storytelling are just that good!!!!This book is a one of a kind, edge of your seat, bite your nails til they bleed, cry so hard you can't read anymore kinda books and I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!Now go write me the next book lady!

By Tammy Sullivan Let me start by saying, if you haven’t read this series, you need to seriously one-click it today!! I'm serious, this series will rock your world. Now, My reaction at the end of Wormwood Echoes....OMG, HOLY CRAP, OMG.....I was completely blown away, what a cliffhanger!I CAN'T EVEN TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS BOOK, but I will certainly try!!! Wormwood Echoes (WE) was dark, beautifully written and riveting. As with all Laken’s books, you definitely get your fill of action. So much has happened to Rune and Shiv Crew, they have suffered losses along the way, but yet they stand together against the newest threat. As the story progresses, it is clear that the dynamics are changing, loyalties are being tested and that deception is very real. Just when you think you know exactly what is about to happen...BAM!...you don’t and you are left speechless. As I turned each page, I found myself on the edge of my seat needing to know what would happen next, but yet not wanting the book to end because then I would no longer find myself in Rune’s world. There are some BIG surprises in this book….just hold on tight, it’s definitely a bumpy ride my friends. I truly can’t say that I have ever had a book make me feel so emotionally invested in each and every character. It’s like a movie playing in your head, you feel their happiness, love, pain, anger and betrayal. I literally can’t tell you how many times I had to stop and say WTF? or OMG?, take a few breaths and then dive back in because I just had to know what happened next. One thing I love about Laken, she doesn’t hold back, she always follows her story, no matter how hard it may be...and let me just say, my journey with the Rune Alexander Series has been a rollercoaster of emotions. Simply put, WE didn’t disappoint and was pure perfection. As I read the final page of WE, I had tears streaming down my face, I was numb, and my heart was happy yet breaking at the same time. I kept saying don’t end here, please don’t end here….LOL!! All I can say is I am suffering from the biggest book hangover. Laken Cane you are my HERO! Thank you so much for writing this amazing series. I love Rune and Shiv Crew…I’m addicted and loving it. I am eager for the next book in this series....bring on Book 7!

After a thousand years of protecting the last of humanity, the City of Gabriel is dying. When it goes, the domed city will either be the womb that gives birth to the next step in human evolution, or it will become the largest tomb on Earth. Below the city, inside a vast warren of caves, Elliott Dawning awakens to find that the last three years of his life have been taken from him. His will, his body, his very identity, has been usurped and wiped away until the moment he opens his eyes. His body has been changed, more so than the rest of the humans inside the domed city. He begins his third life as the unstrung puppet trying to find his sister and stay away from the artificial archangel that had abducted him. By the end, Elliott will be forced to either take up the role of puppet master, or condemn a hundred million people to death. Sarah Dawning has known loss in her life. When she lost her parents, her brother kept her from giving up. When her brother died, she anchored herself to the Holy Order of Archivists and the man she loves, Bishop Galen Rostum. Together they will learn that the city's Archangel A.I. caretaker has plans for both of them, and their love for each other will be the catalyst that ignites the terrible purpose hidden within Sarah. When brother and sister find each other again, they will launch revolutions, unleash monsters, give rise to miracles, see the birth of magic and legend in a world of technology, and perhaps discover something about who and what they have become. That's assuming they survive, of course.

Wings of Silver and Blood (The Ark Project) (Volume 1), by Mark C Harms

About the Author Mark C. Harms has spent over a decade in the financial services industry, and if someone had told him that he should write a novel three years ago, he would have written a memo asking them how they might be more productive with their time. Then, like Buck waking up after several hundred years to find Wilma standing over his rapidly thawing body, Mark's life long obsession with all things science fiction and fantasy came out of its coma, and did a happy dance. Wings of Silver and Blood is Mark's debut novel, and while it is the culmination of a revival of his love of story, it is only the beginning of the tale yet to be told. Mark lives with his amazing wife and beautiful kids in the oh so fascinating prairies of Northern Illinois, where one can enjoy spring warmth and sunshine one day, and get plowed under by a blizzard the next.

We find ourselves in a future where humanity has given over their care and survival to self aware Artificial Intelligence. Earth has degenerated into a handful of domed cities sprinkled over the world. Our story takes place in the ancient city of Chicago (a city that our author is familiar with) controlled by an AI calling itself Gabriel. The crux of this story is that the AI Gabriel of Chicago is having second thoughts as to the rightness of directing the future of humanity. So now here we go, you just can’t say I don’t want to play anymore. There are now humans that feel released from mental bondage and are seeking a new direction. There are those who want a new direction but wish to be that direction, while there are elements of the AI that disagree with their apparent loss of power. You know what must now happen, a holocaust of fire and sword. This book has multiple characters that have been well developed along with verbal description of a domed city many years in the future. There must be more in store for the reader for there are many more cities whose AI has very different views of their existence and that of humanity.

By Cherie Reich Violet Fairdale must relearn what made her forget all she loves in Rachel Morgan's The Faerie War.As the third novel in the Creepy Hollow series, this review may have some spoilers, if you haven't read The Faerie Guardian or The Faerie Prince yet. And if you haven't read them yet, then why haven't you?Morgan's Creepy Hollow series is one of my all-time favorites. Vi is definitely a kick-butt guardian. She's strong--sometimes tries to be too strong--but she's such a real heroine. Her growth through the series is fantastic and natural feeling. Ryn is another kick-butt guardian who grows from jerk to hero throughout the series. Each character is three-dimensional with their own personality and hopes, dreams, and fears. I loved learning more about some of the Underworld fae in this novel, and Morgan peels back the world she's created throughout the series.I read The Faerie War in one day. I didn't want to put it down and had to find out what would happen next. The horror of what is happening with the fae realm is punctuated with great comedic timing to relieve some of the tension before ramping it back up again. Morgan has created a satisfying ending not only for this book but also the series as well that touches the reader's heart.I recommend not only The Faerie War but the entire Creepy Hollow series by Rachel Morgan.

From the first book to the last, I struggled to put this story down. Now that I'm finished I'm a little melancholy. I love a happy ending, but this is one of those stories where you want....more. :) More of Violet, more Ryn, more Creepy Hollow. And who knows, maybe the author will write a little spin off with Jamon and Natessa?? or some other characters. I just love her imagination and the fairy world she created, such an escape from our dreary world. Either way, thank you for the reprieve from the hustle and bustle of daily life for awhile, Rachel, this was one of my favorite indulgence reads so far.lol. even as a thirty year old mother of two, I'm still not too old for "faire tales".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Mixed Feelings, but Overall a Great Book By Savannah Rohleder The world has fallen apart and destruction is all that remains. Everyone is in hiding, but Violet can’t remember anything about what happened to cripple the world. Actually, she can’t remember much of anything. She finds herself at the mercy of the reptiscillas, who all seem to hate her for being a guardian – whatever that means. Through it all, she has to find a way to figure out her role in the fight to save the world. To be completely honest, my feelings on this book are mixed. I’m just getting off the high of the amazing last two thirds of the book, but I really struggled with the start of this book. It’s really frustrating to go into the book with the main character knowing nothing. I think stories with the amnesia aspect can be really great, but when I have read through two whole books and know a whole lot about the character and her experiences, it gets kind of frustrating to have her be so ignorant. So many times I wanted to scream at her to fill in the blanks to her memory, but of course that wouldn’t work.Once you get past Part 1, it gets a lot better. I’m so glad Rachel Morgan decided to give Ryn his own time to shine (Part 2 was in his point of view). Things really started picking up later into the book and I couldn’t put it down, but I really had to force myself to get through the first of it. I even had to put it down and pick up another book before I felt I could continue with this one.Getting past that first part, the book is definitely worth it. There was a really satisfying conclusion to the book and it didn’t seem cheesy, or like it was too easy for what happened to actually have happened. Sorry if this is a bit confusing, I’m trying to be vague.I still really love Violet as a character, even though she can’t remember anything. She is still true to herself and she may not remember why she is the way she is, but she doesn’t drastically change, which I really like. I’m really glad Rachel Morgan decided to handle Violet’s case of amnesia this way. She really did an excellent job writing Violet without her memory. I think it was just my personal preference that made it more painful to read Violet without her memory.Ryn is such an amazing character and I love him so much! Going into this book series, I really hated him at first, which is what you are supposed to do, but I really enjoyed seeing him grow and change throughout this series. He is just so good for Violet as well. I am so glad that Rachel Morgan didn’t make him push Violet too hard when she didn’t remember him. It’s a terrible position that he was in, but Rachel Morgan did an excellent job with writing the new dynamic to Ryn and Violet’s relationship. This book series is really worth the read. I really loved it. Sadly, each book had a piece that bothered me, so they couldn’t rank as high as my absolute favorites, but it came pretty close. I’m excited that this world will be continued on in the next book series arch about Calla. I just might have to finish decompressing from this one before I start the next.

Every time something new came up it was THE MOST difficult/frightening/evil EVER. I got through the books because I can't live with an unfinished story. However, if I knew then what I know now, I would have stopped at Book 3 and left it at that.

The main character is a young girl whose destiny will change the world as she try's to escape religious fanatics bent on destroying her. Fantastical landscapes and dragons will capture your imagination and whisk you away for hours on end. I've always believed the sign of a good writer is when they write about a world and you can picture it vividly in your minds eye, Brian Rathbone has accomplished that with seeming ease in his Godsland series.

By Ken from Wisconsin Long ago, I started this wondrous series due to the kindness of the author making a number of his books available to read at a greatly reduced price. I read through Regal. Now, again due to Brian Rathbone's generosity by making these excellent reads available though KindleUnlimited, which allows me to finish the series - one of the more important things on my "bucket list".If you're a fan of swords and sorcery, dragons, heroes and villains (and those who go back and forth) and the kind of storytelling that reaches past the mind to the soul, these books are for you. Godsland is a world you might well not always like, but you'll always return to.Thank you, Brian, for not ending this write and "Regal's" end and for allowing me the joy of sharing the tales you tell with you.

The Sythians Invaded Again

Dark Space, the last refuge of humanity, is overrun; its citizens are either enslaved or dead. The relentless Sythians have slaughtered humanity wherever they could find them, and now only a few hundred survivors remain. Desperate to escape, these few chase rumors of a lost sector of humanity and end up on Avilon, a planet covered with a vast, kilometers-high city that lies hidden and shielded from the rest of the galaxy by its impossibly advanced technology and its benevolent ruler - Omnius, the artificial intelligence who would be god to his human creators.

Humanity Found Refuge on Avilon

Omnius reveals that no one really died in the war - he couldn't save them from the Sythians, but he did find a way to record the contents of their brains and resurrect them all in the bodies of immortal clones. Omnius keeps a record of everyone's mind in order to make predictions about the future and prevent people from making mistakes. The result is a perfect paradise where you can be assured of a happy, successful life for the rest of eternity - just so long as you are willing to give up your freedom and submit to Omnius' will. If you refuse you can live in the Null Zone, a city that lies cloaked in shadows below the immortal paradise where Omnius reigns supreme. In the Null Zone humanity has its freedom, but the result is chaos, death, and forced separation from everyone living in the Upper Cities of Avilon.

Paradise for Some Is a Prison for Others

To Ethan Ortane, who spent years exiled on a prison world in Dark Space, Avilon and its utter lack of freedom is the Netherworld incarnate, and Omnius the Devlin himself. His son, Atton, is not so sure - it's hard to argue with Omnius' governance when death and suffering have become just a distant memory. Even better, it looks like Avilon, with all of its advanced technology, might finally be able to put an end to the Sythians.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. What's Wrong With Paradise? By Guardsix 1/26/20155 out of 5 StarsWhoa!  Feels like I've just read about thirty volumes of a grand mind-twisting book.  I cannot believe where this series has gone.  If you thought this was just a good-guys versus bad-guys  sci-fi book, then you haven't read this episode. It was bad enough that the humans all died or were captured in the battle for Dark Space, but then they all got resurrected on Avilon through their Life-links they didn't even know they had.  All except Admiral Hoff.  Turns out he was an Avilonian from way back.  What seemed like a wonderful idea, to die in battle only to live again on Avilon in a new and better clone body was a lot to comprehend in the last book, but now we have to really figure out if that's a good thing or not.I would not want to discuss this book In a book club.  There would be so many different views on what Ominus is doing that people would probably be throwing things at each other!  Ethan has an attitude problem!  His Dad had an attitude problem. They both do not like authority nor do they like to be controlled by someone.  But, is Ominus really "controlling" everyone.  Is it wrong to have someone tell you when you might be making a mistake?  Is it wrong for something to let you make mistakes as long as they don't hurt you or anyone else?  I'm glad I'm not answering any of those questions.Ethan and his wife, Alara have to choose between remaining in Etheria or going to the Null Zone. Now, here is a difficult decision:  stay in Paradise or go to some place resembling Hell!  It's a difficult decision if you're someone that's always been on their own and always believe you've been making your own decisions.  I don't know why Ethan things he's been doing such a great job of doing for himself because he really hasn't.  I believe he sent some time in prison because of his past mistakes so why is he fighting the opportunity to take it easy in Paradise.  I guess some people just couldn't face being bored all the time. Now, Atton,  Ethan's son has shown up and he also has to make a choice.  You need to read the book to see what he does.  It also impacts his girlfriend. Ok, let's get back to the Sythanian problem.  They now control Dark Space and have a lot of humans captured and turned into slaves.  As you know, Sythanians don't fight in wars.  They let their slaves do it for them although there are a lot of Sythanians on the ships in Dark Space.  Omnius is going to send his Peacekeepers out to wipe out the Sythanians once and for all.  Or can he?  He believes the Sythanians don't have the capability to see through his ships cloak, but is that true? It's interesting how authors can write an argument into their stories and then explain both sides to logical perfection!  I don't know how they do it.   I guess my mind isn't that open.  I know when something isn't right, but that doesn't mean it's really bad, does it?If my last statement confuses you, read this book.  You'll find a lot more statements just like it.  I can't wait for the final episode.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. whatodo you do when your upstairs neighbors actually live in 'The Matrix'? By Amazon Customer This one rocks away from the the action yet more than book IV, eschewing the earlier, more conventional space opera/action adventure that Scott did so well in the first coupla books in the Dark Space series. He continues on with the existential challenges faced by the various players in his cast as they measure themselves, and each other, for fit in their new homes, be they conforming comforted completely pragmatic, if legally, and perhaps literally soulless world of the big O, or the much more challenging, confrontational and chaotic, if more soul satisfying and daringly deontological digs deep, deep, down- town. All alliteration aside, this is a more philosophical novel that confronts and challenges the reader to pick sides, or if not pick, understand the difference between sides in the perennial debate between the pragmatic, ends-justify-the - measure utilitarian world view, and the means-ARE-an-end, do the right thing regardless of consequence, deontological (just a fancy word for 'do the right thing, regardless of consequence) world view.As in the previous book, it feels like there's more exposition than action, but there are enough big reveals and interesting ideas sprinkled casually around (ie, he give one sentence, one word in the sentence, 'bacti-crete', iirc, which evokes a purpose built bacteria that eats whatever, dirt, toxic waste, doesn't really matter, and excrete a concrete like substance in a controlled manner. Brilliant little Sci Fi pearl that like RAH's 1930's crazy idea of a water-filled bed, might be a reality in generation or three. Good stuff, and enough of it to keep you turning the page, and invested in the world building along with the characters and their stories.

Rollercoaster of feelings By Wraptor I was really enjoying the book until I realized that I was 75% through th book and there couldn't be enough space to finish. With that said I thought this was the last book (minus one star). Then I find out there is one more to the series to come. So I then breathe a sigh of relief. So I continue reading and from about 75% thru the epilogue the book felt rushed. I assume that the deadline was close and the publisher was screaming for the book. I don't like when an author does that. This whole book felt inconsistent overall. The beginning was like the previously released books but took a turn for the worse when the author tried to get to much in at the end (minus second star). The author should take the time to tell the story. Don't rush it and try to get so much in at the end. Maybe move some of the info to the prologue of the next book or to the next book itself and add another book. I mean your fans wait with you this far. We won't mind a little longer. Up until the end of this book I was happy with how things had been separated between books.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Perfect for expecting mothers! By Sharon McCumber I am absolutely in love with The Bump products and i was so excited to see this little planner on the Blogging For Books website! This is one of those perfect books for new mommies and has every little thing you could possibly need for your entire pregnancy! It includes a slot for a picture in the front of the book so you can slide in your favorite photo of your baby! But it goes deeper than just one slot for pictures. One of the first things you come to is three pages of timeline so that you can keep track of all the things you need to do throughout your pregnancy. Then you have a page for all of your important phone numbers just in case you arent home or around anyone you hope to be. But one of my favorite things about this book is that you can write a little note/ story for your child, telling them about their parents and what you are most nervous about when it comes to your baby. You have a page dedicated to a family tree as well as baby names you love, a list of prenatal tests you will take throughout your pregnancy and a place to keep track of your doctor visits! It gets so much better than that though. This book is divided between your three trimesters with full page pockets for pictures, instructions from your doctor, test results and forms and anything else you might need! It also includes questions to ask your doctors and when to ask them and each trimester ends with another note space for you to write something for your baby! After the trimesters sections there is a baby section where you can keep all of their ” Baby Firsts”, pictures, baby checkups through their first year, a feeding tracker, and a gift log! In my opinion every mother needs this book! It will make so many things easier for you as well as less stressful! Pick it up on the Penguin Random House website at

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Disappointed By J. Chang Just thought this was okay. I would have preferred if it at least had a calendar in it. The book is separated by trimesters and has three pockets for you to put things in like photos and notes. Probably would not recommend this book to a first time mom to be. I recommend the 40 Weeks +: The Essential Pregnancy Organizer (The Essential Organizers) Spiral-bound. Used this for my first pregnancy and it was great.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Best pregnancy planner by far By kapj57 I looked high and low for a pregnancy planner and this one was by far the best I found! I like that it's more gender neutral, since you obviously never know in the beginning boy or girl. I love that it prompts you to answer questions and write letters to baby (a little cheesy but I think it'll be cool to look at in the future). It gives some okay/good tips (for shower, nursery, etc.) and some parts make you think about things you might not have thought about planning. It has places for you to write your doctors appointments and what happened at each. Everything is broken down into sections which is nice. First, second, third trimester and then a post birth section too. Each trimester is separated by months where you can fill out information and begins with a folder you can place any documents or reminders in. Very well organized and asks relevant questions you actually want to answer.
