Joshi is now working with we, the "living," and has edited quite a few substantial anthologies: BLACK WINGS, THE MADNESS OF CTHULHU, A MOUNTAIN WALKED, and the book consider'd here, SEARCHERS AFTER HORROR.Ye Contents:IntroductionIced In, by Melanie TemAt Home with Azathoth, by John ShirleyThe Girl Between the Slats, by Michael AronovitzThe Patter of Tiny Feet, by Richard GavinAt Lorn Hall, by Ramsey CampbellBlind Fish, by Caitlin R. SchwaderEt in Arcadia Ego, by Brian StablefordThe Shadow of Heaven, by Jason V BrockFlesh and Bones, by Nancy KilpatrickThe Sculptures in the House, by John D. HaefeleIce Fishing, by Donald TysonAlthough the title of the book is taken from the opening sentence of H. P. Lovecraft's "The Picture in the House" ("Searchers after horror haunt strange, far places."), S. T. has pointed out that this is not a Lovecraftian anthology. There are nods to the Mythos, as in Gary Fry's superb "The Reeds," where we find a reference to Yog-Sothoth; but this solid story is so original that one hesitates to label it "Lovecrafian." The Great Old Ones are also mentioned in "The Sculptures in the House," but the real delight for me in this wonderful story is that it discusses the weird work in stone by Clark Ashton Smith. The theme of the book is the motif of the "weird place," those haunts that are touched by Outside influences. One superb aspect of the book is that no one story is like another--they are all unique and keenly effective. We can almost smell the aged bones in Nancy Kilpatrick's queer, atmospheric tale; and Jason V Brock's story, so modern in tone, is expertly plotted and mesmerizing. I think my favourite story in the book is the beautifully written "The Beautiful Fog Ascending." Strantzas writes so well, with prose that is precise and effective; and he conjures such an eerie atmosphere that one feels haunted by the story after having devour'd it. Richard Gavin gives us an abandoned site that is at first unnerving, and then diabolic; and his story does what all excellent horror fiction should--it gives ye the creeps. "Miranda's Tree" is a newly-discovered unpublished story by weird artist, Hannes Bok. And it is always fascinating to see one of the top weird poets, the remarkable Ann K. Schwader, dip her pen into ye pond of prose--and "Dark Equinox" is as excellent as it is spellbinding. There is not a poor story in the book, and each is graced by an interior illustration by Rodger Gerberding, and the wonderful jacket art is by Richard Corben. The book is handsomely produced, as are all Fedogan & Bremer books, and sturdy in construction. It is fabulous to see this renown publisher, who has filled the void left by the inactivity of Arkham House, return with new titles. Long may they wave!

By Ian This collection is magnificent, and not just because it is complied by the Lovecraftian authority Mr. S. T. Joshi. Anyone can make a "best of" compilation of a famous author. It takes a true understanding of an author and his themes to make a great editor and curator of that author's work. S. T. Joshi is just that, and he proves it by choosing tales that drip Cosmic Horror, anguish, ennui, and madness. Some are more traditionally horrific, squirming and writing monsters and all. In others, our own sentience is the foulest enemy we could ever imagine. To that latter note 'The Girl Between the Slats" had my chest in a knot. It purposefully starts weak and by the end pile-drives the reader with shocking sadness: excellent. The amazingly named W. H. Pugmire delivers a tale lyrical, flowing, and haunting - much like the poetry that makes up the crux of it! I think I'm going to have to look into buying one of his short story collections! Also I love the odd and twisted images peppered throughout the book. They are in no way illustrations of the stories. They are simply random images of strange and sometimes horrific faces, melting geometric shapes, houses breaking or reforming into something larger. They make no sense, and that's why they're perfect.[Edit 8/8/14] I was completely wrong about the illustrations! They are very much related to each story. I simply didn't realize that fact initially due to their abstract and twisted nature. But as I was finishing one of the stories it became obvious to me that the elements in the image were clearly relevant to what I was reading. I then went back through the book and looked at all the illustrations and felt like a fill for not seeing it earlier! This has given me an even deeper appreciation of the book!I've only read to Hannes Bok's 'Miranda's Tree' but I am hooked. I would recommend buying this just on the first 12 stories alone. But I have no doubt the rest will be just as gripping and dark as the ones before!

It is a collection of stories that share an author's well-developed sense of setting, and the authors' using that setting to develop a gradual buildup ofking-size shivers. At Lorn Hall, by Ramsey Cambpell, really gets this collection into the stratosphere. Followed by truly creepy stories The Reeds....Exit Through the Gift Shop...Rarely is it so perfect a collection that your attention is drawn to the anthologist. Here, S.T.Joshi has done a prize-worthy job of defining a new sort of collection and executing it with exquisite care. And kudos to that great publishing company, Fedogan & Bremer, for the care with which this book is printed and bound.

Carly Daniels knows what it is to suffer loss. She knows what it is to sacrifice. In the two years since a pandemic virus—known only as the Infection—decimated humanity, she’s made choices she never could have imagined. She’s condoned violence in the name of peace and done the unthinkable in the name of mercy. But with Justin at her side, she’s also learned there’s nothing she can’t face and nothing she wouldn’t do to protect those she loves. But now another threat has arrived in the form of a uniformed man driving an army truck, claiming to represent the remnant of the United States military. Someone has set their sights on their community . . . and on Justin. The struggle to defend their little homeland is far from over, and the visitors may have brought more danger with them than just their weapons. The shadows are closing in. Carly has to find out whether she has the strength to stand on her own when all of her support has fallen away. What remains when the shadows have gone?

Each book has to have its own story, and there has to be a bigger story carried through all three books that concludes at the end. It's a balancing act. It's a tapestry. It's a perfectly-timed feast served to a large family.Lissa Bryan, in Shadows Have Gone, concluded her The End of All Things Trilogy with artistic balance, with perfect timing. In Bryan's dystopian world, the one that has developed since the Infection, people have had to learn to live in less sheltered ways. Necessity breeds blunt pragmatism."A pregnant woman doesn't need the stress and strain of lugging around bodies in this heat."for example.Because there had been a battle, you see, and the people of Colby, where Bryan has established her characters' home in this trilogy, are civilized and aren't going to leave death just lying around. In fact, their society has brought to the fore examples of selflessness and insight that make books like this haunting reading."That's why I know ghosts are real, Not visible phantoms floating through a house and throwing stuff. But the ghosts in your mind. They haunt you. Sometimes forever, I guess." - Kaden We ask ourselves, how does a young man come to think such things? How can he quote Beowulf over a cairn? But he can and he does.Bryan shows a very natural pattern in this final book of her trilogy. There's conflict between those who want to Just Relax Already after the altercations and tragedies of the last book and those who want to Investigate Possible Future Problems to keep an eye on things.Carly, Our Heroine, is one of the former while her husband, Justin, is firmly in the camp of the latter. This makes for a domestic tension in their home. Also in their home, though, is the playful amusement new parents will recognize as Carly and Justin try to angle for some alone time while there's a baby in house, a young man they've adopted into their family, and a slew of Colby-ites who need one or the other of them for something. And, of course, Bryan keeps the balance. Because while this is happening, trouble is brewing. Names from the first book are coming back to engage themselves in our awareness. Carly gets in a dangerous circumstance.Calamity strikes.I can't tell you the nature of that calamity, but I will say it totally works for me. This book has its own Big Bad and once again Our Hero and Heroine have to handle it.Believe in Lissa Bryan's storytelling, though. She makes it work all the way to the last page.Really, I'm sitting here working very hard NOT to tell you what happens. So go, read this trilogy. It's a blunt but hopeful adventure into a future I would rather never, ever see happen.

The perfect ending to an incredible series By ysar It’s been two years since a flu-like plague decimated humanity and brought Carly and Justin together, and the fact that they are still alive is something of a miracle. Having established themselves in a small island community with a small collection of other makeshift families of survivors, life isn’t easy, but they’re getting by. Only it seems they’ve attracted the attention of what’s left of the military, the same people Justin knew in his former life and who seem to be responsible for the destruction of mankind. And the tough but mostly peaceful life they’ve carved out for themselves is now threatened. The Verdict: After the ending of The Land of the Shadow, I was dying to get my hands on this one, and it did not disappoint!Lots of things have changed since we first me Carly and Justin in The End of All Things, and Carly has grown up quite a bit. Now a mother and defacto leader in their small community, she no longer clings to ideas of the world before, instead working hard and doing whatever is necessary to make their communal lives just a little more bearable. But the presence of the military — or whatever is left of it — has Justin on edge, and it’s just a matter of time before they’re forced to confront the man responsible for both destroying the world and ensuring their survival.Colby has been a bit of an oasis in the midst of disaster, but life there is by no means easy. There’s sickness and death, arguing and exhaustion, but they hold on to it as tightly as they can, determined to remain civilized without civilization. But even that small peace is shattered when Lewis, Justin’s former commander, begins reaching out to Justin, making it clear that he expects Justin to join him in whatever plan he has next. He’s not above threats — or following through with them — but Carly isn’t about to let anyone separate her family.Obviously I don’t want to give away everything that happens, but I will say that it’s worth hanging onto every word. We see the rag-tag band from Colby step up and defend themselves and each other, we see Carly willing to walk through hell to ensure that everyone she cares about is safe, and we see Justin face his past and get a few of the answers we’ve all been waiting for.In some ways, this book is darker than the others. Where in the previous books, we looked toward a future where they could settle down, raise their small family, and experience some semblance of normalcy and safety, in Shadows Have Gone, they’ve found exactly that, but it doesn’t automatically come with a happy ending. Survival is always at stake, and even in what is probably one of the safest situations any humans are experiencing, outside threats constantly loom. When it all came to a head, I honestly couldn’t imagine how everything could possibly be okay in the end, and I was ready to throw my Kindle down and have a bit of a tantrum. But I should have known that Lissa Bryan would come through with a realistic, believable resolution that had my heart retreating from it’s hideout in my throat.I love well-written dystopian stories, but I so rarely find them. And in series, it’s not uncommon for me to begin losing interest by the time the last piece of the story is published. But this series is different, and while even the characters often want to just sit back and relax for a few minutes now that they think they’ve survived the worst of things, I was itching to turn the pages and find out what would happen next. The tension is undeniable, even in what should be simple day-to-day events, and when the big drama came, somehow it seemed so fitting that the story almost couldn’t be told without it. Shadows Have Gone really is the perfect ending to an incredible series, and while I think any of the books can be read alone, you’re missing all kinds of amazing if you don’t grab them all.

I've been anxiously awaiting this final book in The End of All Things series. And I can say: This was worth the wait!We pick right up where The Land of the Shadows ended. There's a military truck driving right up to them. I, just like Carly did, thought: Wow! They are saved! Finally, there's and end to food shortages and they can surely get more medical supplies!Dang that Justin...he made her hold back...and well he did. There isn't an easy fix in this brave, new world. And while that would have been great, Carly and Justin can bring their people through the shadows. It's hard, but it can be done.I did laugh at several points. Like when Justin remembered he was DOOMED from the first time he saw Carly. There was no way he wasn't going to fall for her. I also laughed when she remembered it was Monday, and therefore, wash day. So much easier here in my house to throw a load of wash into a washer that is powered by electricity and then I'm able to put it into a DRYER!Then Ms. Bryan made me cry. Because this new world has some harsh realities. And while one can get past some of those realities, hearts will hurt. And mine surely did.Once again, if I were in this situation, I would really want Justin and Carly on my side. Justin is a total warrior, but while her strengths are different, Carly is just as strong, maybe even stronger than he is.The last several chapters of this story had me on the edge of my seat, rushing through each page to the end, my heart clenching in my chest. The payoff was worth it.There's hope in these characters. I would hope that if something like the Infection happened, that humanity would rise above the carnage, just like these people did. While none of them are superheroes, they did overcome. That's what I'd hope for in this kind of future.Frankly, I loved Shadows Have Gone. And now I want more from Ms. Bryan. I don't think I can get enough of her words. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for adventure, mystery, a bit of romance, some humor, and a series to sink your teeth into. Well done, Ms. Bryan!Thank you, NetGalley and TWCS, for the opportunity to read this book.

An excellent book for newbie's and internet marketers By Emily Wirth I have known Dawood for a quite long period of time and can say that his book is an absolute charm! It is a real-world and practical guide to landing page testing and optimization without any fluff. It is really for the folks who do the testing and want to get some serious conversion rates! The best part I like about the book is that it is explained in a very structural manner and covered in depth. There are a few overlaps in the book but at the end of the day it is a must read book.

A Great Basic guide to optimize your landing pages By Tyler Fay This is a great reference book to understand how to optimize, tweak and design your landing pages. If you have no clue what you are doing, this is a great place to start. It is easy to understand and grasp.Although the designing section should have been explained in more depth. But still a pretty good read.

By C.R.PUTSCHE The Argent Star is a YA/SF story set in the year of 2453 and is the first book in the Monarchy Series.Ren Argent is the main female protagonist whose world is literally turned upside down when her brother, Elian discovers a hidden planet that has been lost for centuries. Instead of continuing her education to become an archaeologist and exploring the lost cities of earth, she is suddenly bound to join forces to help her estranged father who has just been appointed king by the Monarchy to rule the planet as some unexpected paperwork claims that an ancestor of theirs named the planet Novae. Ren reluctantly leaves with her father and brother to help rule Novae with a deep sense of loss as she must leave behind everything she knows to help govern a planet she knows very little about. Ren soon discovers nothing about coming to Novae was what she expected as there are a number of assassins and insurgents who are planning a rebellion to overthrow her and her family and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal. It is not long after that Ren is appointed a strong female Sotarian guide to help protect her against the uprising, however when a few unexpected series of events take place and Ren witnesses firsthand how the insurgents, rebels and even a secret society are all out to overthrow anyone governing Novae she begins to question her own loyalty as she is more convinced that the Monarchy wants to destroy Novae. Ren tries to separate the Monarchy away from Novae to avoid mass genocide and goes against everything she believes in, everything she was taught and everything she knew for the past twenty years of her life to save Novae, but will her efforts be enough strike a deal with the Monarchy and save Novae from their control?Despite the conflicts, dangers and twists in the story the characters' are my most favourite part of the novel as they are all uniquely flawed because they all struggle with their own issues and find a way to deal with all the changes around them. One example of this is that Ren manages to overcome her own insecurities, anxiety and fears and finally turn them to her advantage. Fray has taken a young insecure woman and made her in to a force to be reckoned with as she has to escape assassins who attempt to kill her family as well as the fight against the Monarchy she no longer trusts. Any readers that get into Frays story and characters' will no doubt want to invest in the next set of instalments. My Ranking: 4.5 StarsMy Review Sites:http://walkerputsche.wordpress.com/http://catherineroseputsche.webs.com/

Miles, published under the pen-name of Emerson Fray, and part of the "Monarchy" series.Warning: this book does end ambiguously and fairly abruptly, as it is of course part of a series, hence the cliff-hanger to make you want more! However, I feel that it is still enjoyable as a stand-alone read as long as you are happy to draw your own conclusions on how the proposed resolution would actually have unfolded - in the same way that many films do.Also, if you like your science fiction ultra complicated, full of jargon, technical explanations that require a PHD and oodles of wacky names that you do not stand a chance remembering... sorry, this is just NOT the book for you.The Argent Star is incredibly easy to read with simple or mysterious explanations and concepts that you would have already met many times before just by watching any sci-fi series. A fairly limited cast of characters and locations are presented in stages and with names which can be easily remembered. The main focus and strength of this novel is the development of its protagonists, the moral dilemmas they are faced with, the political intrigue that surrounds them and their location: a pillaged Earth and the unspoilt, backwards Novae, where things are not necessarily what they seem. The story is narrated from the point of view of Ren Argent, in the third person, and it flows effortlessly, at a very good pace throughout. Hence I found this to be a lean, action packed, lightening quick read, with no extra no padding: repetitions, unnecessarily long or convoluted descriptions or extra text for the sake of it.I would have liked to have known a bit more about certain characters and their interactions with others, but this may come in the next books in the series, which I cannot wait to read. The Argent Star has set the scene beautifully - what will happen next? The last 5% of the book is a sneak preview at an excerpt of an early draft of the next book: "The Howling Jade".[ARC received from the Author]

IF ONLY IT HAD HAD A GOOD EDITOR By Derek White *A Copy of this Book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest ReviewWithin the first forty pages I had already decided on three stars for this book and nothing in the next two hundred (or thereabouts) changed my mind. If I was not reading this particularly for a review I would have given up. There were, however, many good things about it. The main character Ren is interesting and if the author had used the services of a good editor for a day or so the resulting work would, I’m sure, have kept a reader turning pages to the end as the story is a good one. Hopefully as this is the first in a series things will get better. I was certainly impressed enough to give Book Two a chance.Review has been done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official

By Harper Hull Another rare and very welcome appearance of a Neil Coghlan story - this one set in the musky corridors of Whitehall as a civil servant contemplates a very important decision involving a very great event. As usual the characters and settings are beautifully sketched out, giving a real life to the tale. I don't want to give anything away at all but do read this if you like smart, darkly tinged fiction. I hope one day soon Neil puts together a proper collection of his work, I'll be at the front of the line for that.

The way the government behaved was expected, and no surprise at all. I was impressed with this story. Nothing graphic, just a finely written tale of how it could be. Yep, I'd recommend this story and author.

The author does a wonderful job of researching her subject and introducing the reader into a different culture/time period. Even though the story isn’t a full-length novel, it still has lots to offer, humor, action, steamy romance, vampires, and secondary characters that enrich the story. The romance is steamy, but not overly descriptive or explicit. The hero is wonderfully described and very sexy! The heroine is perfect for him and quite a character! This story is a wonderful addition to the VAL series.

Guard, Protect, and Above All, Stay Alive

Two months after the announcement that rocked the entire world, Mari Jorgenson is going undercover to protect the man who has become the face of the Unbounded. What’s not to like? Expensive clothes, a great disguise, a chance to play with knives—and all with a Renegade partner she might just be falling for. Mari can’t think of a better assignment for practicing her shifting ability. But when everything goes horribly wrong on the first day, it will take everything she has—and more—if she and her friends are to keep humanity’s best hope for peace alive long enough to unite the world. Along the way, Mari glimpses within herself a darkness that threatens to turn her into the very evil she is fighting. Join Mari, Keene, Jace, Cort, and other Renegades from the main Unbounded series as Mari shifts through an adventure that will ultimately set the stage for the greatest and final battle with the Emporium. Please note that Lethal Engagement is a novella, but it is 50% longer than the other two Unbounded novellas, the same size as many short novels. While it is separate from the main Unbounded series, the events take place in the Unbounded timeline after The Reckoning (Unbounded Book 4). As some of the events in book 4 are referenced, readers will better appreciate Lethal Engagement after reading The Reckoning.

Lethal Engagement (An Unbounded Novella) (Unbounded Series), by Teyla Branton

About the Author Teyla Branton grew up avidly reading science fiction and fantasy and watching Star Trek reruns with her large family. They lived on a little farm where she loved to visit the solitary cow and collect (and juggle) the eggs, usually making it back to the house with most of them intact. On that same farm she once owned thirty-three gerbils and eighteen cats, not a good mix, as it turns out. Teyla always had her nose in a book and daydreamed about someday creating her own worlds. She is now married, mostly grown up, and has seven kids, including a two-year-old, so life at her house can be very interesting (and loud), but writing keeps her sane. She thrives on the energy, inspiration, and daily amusement offered by her children. Grabbing any snatch of free time from her hectic life, Teyla writes novels, often with a child on her lap. She loves guns, martial arts, and belly dancing. Teyla writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and science fiction. She also writes romance and romantic suspense under the name Rachel Branton. I have never been interested in supernatural novels but a preview of the first Unbounded book was after a novel that I totally enjoyed. So, I got started . . . Needless to say, I'm hooked!! These fast moving, never a slow moment novels are like craving chocolate, I just can't put the story down once I start. I totally recommend these books to anyone that is wanting adventure and realistic action -- only downside is I really wish these books would be available as books on CDs. I'm sure if the right people got into these, the story would become a movie!!!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Best of the novellas By merlinwv Excellent novella. Outside of the full books, this may have been my favorite story. Mari has always been a fascinating character and to learn more about her and to see her develop her powers was awesome. Keane has always been one of my favorite characters and I enjoyed his part in this story. I am not sure I am enjoying the mortals knowing about the unbounded, but we shall see. Outstanding storyline, very good development. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Exceptional storyline! By Sheila Pincock I have read all of the Unbounded books to date and have loved them all! I was glad that this novella was longer than usual since I can't get enough. I am really looking forward to the next novel. It has been fun getting to know each character. It was nice to see Mari and Keene working together and their relationship developing!

When your sister has saved the world, you have a lot to live up to. Genie McQueen thought she’d seen it all after helping her big sister Secret stop the Apocalypse. The dead walked, New York City burned, and things nearly went to hell in a hand basket. After it was all over, the world knew about vampires and werewolves, and Genie’s life would never be the same. But now, three years later, someone doesn’t want werewolves or any supernatural creatures to live alongside humans. A new anti-werewolf church with a charismatic leader and a cult-like following has declared open season on Genie’s whole species. When a member of her pack is kidnapped, she decides it’s time to stop going with the flow and to step up and fight for her people. Tagging along for the ride is a handsome troublemaker, Wilder Shaw, a pack outsider who just wants to save his brother, but will leave Genie’s head spinning in the process. Equally troubling are the ghosts of her past she can’t quite shake, the nightmarish figures who haunt her even when she’s wide awake, and a dark magic inside her she hasn’t yet learned to tame. Things are about to get messy in the bayou.

Bayou Blues: A Genie McQueen Novel, by Sierra Dean

About the Author Sierra Dean is a reformed historian. She was born and raised in the Canadian prairies and is allowed annual exit visas in order to continue her quest of steadily conquering the world one city at a time. Making the best of the cold Canadian winters, Sierra indulges in her less global interests: drinking too much tea and writing urban fantasy. She’s also a book lover (of course!), obsessive collector of OPI nailpolish and the owner of way too many pairs of shoes. You can usually find her spouting off Kroll Show references or imagining what her wedding to Richard Madden will be like (hopefully not red).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A protagonist that I can get behind By RabidReads March 20th couldn’t come soon enough as far as I was concerned because not only do I adore Sierra Dean’s writing and humour, but this spin-off series also promised more werewolf action than its big sister. I sometimes forget that SECRET MCQUEEN started out as 4-star reads, and didn’t wind up on my favourites pile until book 4, so when I loaded BAYOU BLUES up on my Kindle, my hope burned eternal. The story itself was tip-top, however like all younger siblings; I suspect that it’s going to take several installments for Genie to get out from underneath Secret’s shadow. This novel had everything that I look for when I suss out Urban Fantasy titles: a resilient heroine, plot twists, budding romance, super-duper secondary characters, and dynamite paranormal elements. I wasn’t keen on the overdone anti-supe thread, although the author did modify it enough that the story didn’t suffer too much. The dialogue was shockingly snark-free; I missed the punchy one-liners that Dean’s other series is well-known for, and despite the odd funny bit, I found that the narrative was kinda stiff. I didn’t expect this spin-off to be a twin, but I did count on similarities.Genie had some good, and bad traits; in the earlier chapters she was portrayed as doe-eyed, and naive, however as the book moved forward I found that she got her footing, and showed signs of being a protagonist that I could get behind. This installment transitioned her from spoiled royalty to fledgling leader; McQueen’s motivations were pure and well-intentioned, and it’ll be interesting to see how she handles Callum’s gift, her brother’s ambitions, and Pack politics. As a Princess, she needs to be more diplomatic than her sister, so Genie will doubtless be a different kind of heroine.I was happy that the Church of Morning plot was dealt with in its entirety, and hopefully won’t be an on-going theme in this series, although I wouldn’t bet on it. Humans and supernaturals rarely coexist in harmony, but at least the author won’t be able to use this particular trope again. Still, it was an apt introduction to the new world order, and I enjoyed the smoke screens. I fully back Genie’s taste in men—Wilder Shaw, NOT Cash—and was crazy about fictional me’s debut even though it was short lived. I always knew that I wouldn’t last 2 seconds in UF!BAYOU BLUES kickstarted my latest Sierra Dean infatuation!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Secret's sister's series is off to a solid start By Ghoulish Gretl I'm so excited to be getting more books in the world of Secret McQueen! (There are also more Misfits and Mayhem novellas in the works. Squee!) I always thought that Secret's werewolf family, the Southeast pack lead by her Uncle Callum, was so interesting. Her little sister Genie played a small role in helping to stop the zombies taking over New York in A Secret to Die For and now she's starring in her own series.Twenty-one year old Genie is a student at Tulane living in New Orleans with her human law student boyfriend. She's frequently been pursued by reporters who want to interview the "werewolf princess" since the events in the last Secret book outed the supernaturals. Fearing her high profile will make her a target when The Church of Morning threatens the pack, Uncle Callum calls her home. On the way there, she's run off the road by a church fanatic. She calls the only tow truck in town and finds herself stuck with Wilder Shaw.I really like Wilder. He's confident and flirtatious, but he's not over the top Alpha. I also like the fact that he has a history with Genie's twin brother Ben and I'm curious about how that, along with something that happens at the end of the book, will affect the siblings' relationship in the future.I had some reservations, however, about the anti-supe church. I felt like it's been done before. The Church of Morning even sounds a little bit like The Fellowship of the Sun. Despite that, Sierra Dean twisted the familiar plot in a whole new way. What I really enjoyed about this book is that it feels like a werewolf story. Even though Genie is also half witch and has magic abilities, the plot really revolves around the wolves. It has elements of pack politics as well as Genie growing into her position and learning how to be an Alpha. I feel like I really don't read many true werewolf stories. They're usually mixed in with the vampires and the other supes. So I loved that about Bayou Blues.I also love the NOLA setting, even though that's also been done before. But again, it's something I mostly associate with vampires rather than werewolves. I'm excited to see how Dean develops Genie's version of the city in the series. This book does have some small spoilers for the end of the Secret McQueen series, but it's nothing that would keep you from enjoying the last two books if you haven't read them yet. And if you have read A Secret to Die For, you know something Genie doesn't about the secondary plot that continues into the next book.I feel like this series is off to a solid start and I'm really looking forward to the rest of Genie's story. This review was originally published at Goldilox and the Three Weres and was based on a copy provided by the author.

Great start to a new series, very interested to see where things go from here By Amy Originally posted at Vampire Book ClubThree years ago Genie’s sister (some of you may know her: Secret McQueen) averted the apocalypse and in the process the supernatural community was outed to the general population. Being werewolf royalty, Genie McQueen has tried her hardest to remain “normal.” She’s been given her freedom to live away from her pack and attend college. She has a human boyfriend, human friends. I suppose the moral of the story should be that you can’t run from what you are. When a local church starts garnering attention and support for their dislike (putting it mildly) of supernaturals, Genie is asked to return home for safety. When the church ups the ante by kidnapping a member of the pack, Genie, along with the victim’s brother, Wilder, head out not only to save their pack member/brother, but also to stand up for all werewolves. In the process, Genie figures out the things she thought she wanted, that “normal,” is not the same—that she’s not the same person she used to be.Everything about Bayou Blues just clicked for me. I haven’t read the Secret McQueen series (I know, for shame!), but from references in Bayou Blues I’m assuming Genie makes an appearance in that series. Rest assured nothing is taken away by not having read the predecessor series.Instead Bayou Blues felt to me very much like an introduction to Genie despite what may already be known about her from Secret’s series. Readers go along on the journey with Genie as she learns what it is she truly wants out of her life as opposed to what she believes others want for her. I loved her character. I loved the snarky quips that would fly out of her mouth so smoothly I would find myself rereading the dialogue to make sure I read it right. I loved that while many people underestimate her and see her as weak she is anything but.Being both a werewolf and having magic gives Genie the potential for extreme power. In Bayou Blues we get to see that Genie still struggles with how to harness all that power. We see times throughout the story where the magic has the opportunity to overwhelm Genie, but it speaks to her strength and personality, that she uses every resource available to her to make sure that she doesn’t lose herself within the magic even though that would mean becoming the ultimate power. One of the things I like doing with a new series is trying to pick out the relationship. Well, the sparks between Genie and Wilder are pretty apparent from the first moment they’re on the page together. When I’ve read a lot of paranormal romances in a row, I forget how nice it is to see a relationship develop over the course of a few books. With both of them being alphas, and the way they seem to be able to keep each other on their toes, things are going to be interesting.Bayou Blues really sets Genie on the path she wants to take with her werewolf side. We understand what her goals are in that regard. Based on instances in the story, I’m really interested to see how her magic side shakes things up for her and if she really will be able to reconcile both parts of herself.
