4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Press Start to Play By J. Hamby Nicely varied selection of stories involving gaming makes for an interesting compare to the very genre gaming is. I'm not sure? Its evil twin (yeah I don't game, sue me). It's non-identical conjoined twin? Its blurry reflection in a mirror? The reason I say this is because these stories are great simple entertaining pieces for the most part. On their own. What makes them a bit more interesting to read is that gaming is so intertwined with the vast, multi-subsetted sci-fi/fantasy genre. It is quickly becoming a sort of chicken versus the egg kind of logical argument. Particularly as more and more novels I find in the genre seem to have elements of style and theme lifted from the gaming world. Not necessarily as a simple influence but much like how authors used other works and then films and finally television to influence how they think and then how they write. How characters are formed and plots are crafted and delivered. And with these stories there is a nice element that even when writing about gaming, some authors seem to follow that. Consciously or not remains the question. Some of the stories are stronger than others. 'Real' by Django Wexler, 'The Clockwork Soldier' by Ken Liu and 'Gamer's End' by Yoon Ha Lee were my favorites. Some didn't hit the right note for me style wise. But overall this is a nice collection that is entertaining.Among other authors of note is Daniel H. Wilson who is also one of the editors of this collection, Holly Black, Cory Doctorow, Seanan McGuire, Austin Grossman, Catherynne M. Valente, Charles Yu, and Hugh Howey.

It's wonderful and as an avid gamer I loved the theme that tied all of this together. Fabulous stuff! I also noticed one of my fav authors Valente in there as well.
