I've read and enjoyed most of her other work, including Fearless and the 13th Floor collection of novellas. I knew Of Blood and Sorrow would be darker and grittier, and I wasn't disappointed. Erin is a likable character in an impossible situation, dealing with demons and vampires who can't get along. Add to that her own inner turmoil as a Phage who exists by devouring people's emotions—something that can be both a blessing and a curse—and you have a flawed character worth rooting for. She kicks butt and cares about those closest to her. My other favorite character is Abdiel the Allu, a faceless creature who likes to wear the faces of dead celebrities. (The scene with him as JFK is priceless.) Plenty of humor, plenty of action, plenty of romance, and plenty of F-bombs—Of Blood and Sorrow ends with a satisfying finish. Sure, there's a lot of blood and sorrow leading up to it, but what do you expect?

Christine Rain’s Of Blood and Sorrow put me through breakneck twists turns that made the ride quite worth it. With her creative concepts and gallows humor I can tell she has wicked fun as she writes. Oh, and it’s sexy, too.Erin, the leading lady and a demoness, gains energy from sucking up the sorrow of others—a totally weird but great concept. Rains explores Erin’s character and motivation in depth. Erin is ashamed of how her on mother fed so completely on one of her “victims” she killed them. This is partly why Erin takes sanctuary in the Putzkammer Mortuary. There, she can “safely” feed on the natural sorrow of the grieving, while sparing random outsiders a fatal feeding fate. Erin hates her spots, which engorge as she feeds. They remind her of her mother’s appetite and of her own, which at any moment could rage out of control. There are so many fascinating analogies with these elements: the consequences of any type of appetite gone amok, the dread of potential inherited tendencies, the effects of shame on one’s life and even love. Constrained by the people around Erin and by the demands of her job, she hopes her dark past will never come to light. But when Nicolas Reese lands in the mortuary and is decidedly undead, Erin’s failsafe shrouds are ripped away. For one, she is falling for the dashing vampire. And then there’s the fact that vamps and demons don’t trust each other. Nicolas’s creator, Hessa a terrifyingly powerful and evil being, is stalking him. He needs Erin’s help but when the Putzkammers, who took her in and gave her a home, start to die off in scary ways, Erin starts to doubt her own allegiances.I recommend Of Blood and Sorrow to readers who like inventive paranormal with dark humor and spicy romance. And I look forward to the next in this series.

Of Blood and Sorrow by Christine Rains By ?wazithinkin I enjoyed this story about an insecure demon and a fledgling vampire who isn’t sure how to be a vampire. Erin Driscol was raised with an overbearing and abusive mother. She has found a new family with the Putzkammers and her job is an excellent fit for the type of demon she is. Erin is known a Phage demon, who feed off people’s sorrows, she is always careful not to take all of their sorrow away. Usually just enough to help those who have lost a loved one to be able to cope and move forward. Erin fears she may one day become like her mother and drain people until they are an empty shell, and this haunts her. When Nicolas awakens in the morgue one evening while Erin was working late all she really wants to do is get him out of the morgue. Once he is out of the morgue she starts feeling guilty about unleashing another vampire into the world. But Nicolas is not like other vampires, and when Erin sees this she does her best to protect him. Hessa, Nicolas’ sire, wants her new boy toy back. She is as evil as she is beautiful and has a plan that will devastate the demon community and leave the vampires in control.Ms. Rains has done an excellent job building her fantasy community into our own world. Which is kind of creepy when you start thinking about the possibilities. Her characters are well defined and original. The plot moves quickly with several twists and turns I didn’t expect. It was hard to put the book down during confrontations and showdowns. If you like urban fantasies with original interesting characters who grow into their strengths, you will likely enjoy this story. I know I did.FYI: Adult language, there are several F-bombs dropped.Format/Typo Issues: No significant issues were noted.**Originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog.
