The last time Veronica checked, the world outside was still dead…and still covered by the sort-of-undead remnants of humanity. That was this morning. Now, she has to run that gauntlet to try and save Emily, just as Emily once saved her. Four years ago the world was destroyed by medical nanites gone awry, leaving humanity divided into three groups: the living, deaders, and the horrific in-betweeners. Emily’s only hope for a cure lies eighty miles away at a military hospital where nanite treatments were once given, and she’s running out of time. Between Veronica and that hospital is a world of flesh-eating monsters and possibly something even worse…humans. If Veronica fails to get there, Emily will be trapped forever between life and death. Forever Between is book two in the exciting post-apocalyptic trilogy, Between Life and Death. With mild language and occasional violence, (and some very gross undead), this series is suitable for ages 16 and up.

Picking up two years after the suspenseful conclusion of The In-Betweener (Between Life and Death Book 1), Veronica moves from supporting player to center stage in this chapter of the trilogy. Veronica wants to head to the military hospital where Emily received her nanite treatments for her medulloblastoma in the hopes they can find something that can help her recover from what happened to her. The group of people living there now disagrees, saying it's too much risk for too little gain. Charlie is the only one who agrees with her and they head out on a mission to the hospital over two days travel by bicycle through dangerous neighborhoods filled with deaders, in-betweeners or even possibly human survivors in this post-apocalyptic landscape. Once Veronica and Emily reach their objective, what they find is disturbing and miraculous at the same time, sending the story into surprising directions. On a parallel story track, we see the past two years in flashback as we see Emily slowly deteriorate as her brain tumor returns with a vengeance, eroding her functioning. We also see how Emily slowly acquires new strays and brings them into the fold, forming an ad hoc family of almost ten people. They must utilize teamwork so they can keep their stronghold safe, survive their reality and raise the two young children in their midst. And they struggle to take care of their own, even when they lose one to humans turned bad and don't know what happened to her.The dangerousness inherent in their post-apocalyptic environment is palpable on every page. Each character must use a meticulous amount of caution in every situation they encounter, really drawing out that sense of paranoia and engaging the reader's imagination. Each time anyone ventures outside of their safe zone, it feels especially harrowing and immersive, pulling me deep into this chilling and tense reality. All of the characters are fleshed out more, especially Veronica, whose pre-apocalypse history makes her a sympathetic and heroic character. It's also heartbreaking seeing what happens to some of the characters, as you feel bad for each tribulation they endure. The ending compels you to read the third and final installment now, even though we must wait for it to be published in two months. To me, all of this adds up to another excellent installment in this trilogy, minus the (thankfully not too long) wait for the finale. :-)Please note that I was given an Advanced Readers Copy of this eBook. A favorable review was never expected or asked for.

I received no compensation for my review. This is a sequel to The In-Betweeners, a story of a world ravaged by science gone bad. I continue to be very impressed by the author, Anne Christy. In the original story, she created a grim landscape, filled with death. The remaining survivors were filled with visceral fear of succumbing to the same terrible fate as the rest of the world. For the second book, the author could have taken an easy path, using the same characters, battling the same “risen-from-the-dead” creatures, and the same emotional level of fear. But Ms. Christy did not. There are familiar characters, but several new ones. And while the world is still very dangerous, the dangers are different, the character conflicts have morphed, and the plot has gone from survival to betterment. There is a small thread of hope and sense of risk taking, not just for personal survival, but to help others around them. The writing is crisp and error-free. It is exciting and compelling and once I started, I had to finish. There is hard science behind the catastrophe that drives the plot, but the science doesn’t get in the way of the story and the science enables a plot that seems highly plausible. Ms. Christy uses the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring as a metaphor for the story moving on to a new phase of existence. The page has turned and for the remaining survivors, danger comes from survivors from outside the group. These other humans have different motives and some have very dark souls. This darkness brings out unimaginable cruelty and even unbalanced personalities. The author brings in a set of characters that demonstrate the best and absolute worst of humanity. The scope of the novel grows in this book, moving from neighborhood-sized to a city and past it. Oh, and yeah, there are still 2 kinds of zombie-like creatures that must be dealt with and maybe find a cure for.I really enjoyed this book. I think readers from YA and up will also enjoy it. It is just so well written it would be hard not to like it. I will remain on pins and needles until the third book is released. I’m sure there will be a great conclusion to the story but I can’t imagine what it will be. What I do know is that I really, really hope it will be as sophisticated, articulate, and well imagined as Forever Between.

By Katy W I was privileged to be on Ann Christy's "read and review" list for book two in her "Between Life and Death Series." Book two, "Forever Between," was just as exciting (if not more so!) than book one. The book is in the viewpoint of Veronica, a girl saved by Emily in the first novel. Veronica is brave, intelligent, but real at the same time. She does what she has to, but is still (understandably) afraid of the horrible circumstances thrust upon them. I like a real character. I want to relate to this person, even if their situation is something I will never find myself in someday. The other characters are also real, yet different. Each has their own personality, allowing them to shine when it's their turn to speak. In some books, I forget about secondary characters because they are bland. Here I remembered who in this post-apoc "family" was speaking without having to backtrack to see where they were introduced. And little Jon...he kills me. I have kids, a 3.5 year old and a 2 year old. This boy speaks to me with such heartbreaking truth about their horrible situation as if my own sons are written into the text. I can't imagine them needing to go so still and quiet and Jon has to in times of need. Yet, he (and the little girl, Maribelle) holds hope and childhood joys for the future. He still plays and laughs (quietly!), not fearing death unless the situation calls for it at the time. Beautiful and sad, Ann. Nicely written. You've killed my motherly heart!I still haven't figured out a "star" rating system or anything for reviews, but if I had one I would give "Forever Between" a five. I will definitely reread this series at some point because of the characters, story, and entertainment value. I think if it's worth rereading, it needs a high rating. Let's face it, there are a lot of books out there! So if I want to read it again at some point instead of reading a NEW book, that's got to be a good sign!
