Ambrose, one of the demigod children of Ares, has spent almost a hundred years living in peace. His peace is threatened when the local werewolf alpha and the sorcerer in charge of Las Cruces both mysteriously disappear. While investigating their disappearance he learns of a plot to seize control of the area as well as a group of brave, but untrained, defenders. While the defenders want Ambrose’s help he has his own reasons for preserving his pacifism as part of an old oath. Are a band of misfit supernaturals, and threats against his friends enough to bring out the warrior inside?

I only review a book when I think I have something unique to say or when the book is particularly bad. This book is bad on almost every level.1. Grammar. The grammar starts out relatively poor, but about 25% through the book it takes a sudden turn for the worse and remains terrible for the remainder of the book. Examples:"... a stained covered shirt." The author apparently thinks adjectives have tenses. This error shows up frequently."... took the wheel of the truck, running it through the roads ...". Vehicles are driven over roads, not through them."Catch all" when the author means "catchall", "any more" instead of "anymore", "fore arm" instead of "forearm", etc. The author consistently getscompound words wrong.Wrong word choices: "fraction" instead of "faction, "collation" instead of "correlation", "regiment" instead of "regimen", etc."gilded over in gold": "gilded" means covered in gold so this is redundant2. Bad idioms (common occurance):"soon rather than later" instead of "sooner rather than later", "all and all" instead of "all in all", "nothing else to it" instead of "nothing else for it", etc.3. Obscure and erroneous reference: "... don't want to have to Yojimbo that siutuation". For those who don't get this reference, "Yojimbo" is the name of a Kurosawa movie. This reference is wrong because in the movie, the protagonist kills off warring gangs while in the book, the protagonist wants to unite warring factions.4. Wrong about how things work: "The team had thought about using guns with silver bullets, but the metal's softness affected their accuracy and speed". Lead is a LOT softer than silver and is commonly used as ammunition. "... darts filled with liquid silver". Silver is not a liquid unless you get it pretty hot. Perhaps the author was thinking of "quick silver" which is actually mercury?5. Painfully awkward writing: "Mr. Stone picked up a thin cardboard box that sat on a nearby end table. He passed the box to Scott. Scott took the box in a daze." "There are always lines for scenes like this. Lines like ‘he looked peaceful, like he was sleeping’. xxx did not look peaceful or like he was sleeping....".6. Non sequiturs: "Goblins are so viscous and fight so much that they don’t take the time to make their own weapons." and "The changing of shifts for this particular guard duty was particularly hard. It was set up as a twenty-four hour duty. They arrived well before dark and left well after dawn. This limited the troops that Ursa could throw at them" ... no it doesn't.7. The protagonist is a "demigod". His only powers seem to be healing faster than normal humans, not aging and being able to see through "glamours". I guess demigod's are what they used to be. Worse, he isn't very bright. Early in the book he gets what is obviously a coded message and the key to that message from what seems to be the most powerful entity in the book. He doesn't figure this out until the last paragraph. He is supposed to be a "god of war" but his strategies are simple minded (a bright ten year old could have done as well) and depend on the enemy doing exactly what he predicts exactly when he predicts it, even when those actions make no sense. There is some sort of glaring error or painful awkwardness in about every 2-3 paragraphs. The sample caught my interest and the first 25% of the book isn't terrible. Obviously the author can do better. I find it offensive that the author couldn't be bothered to bring the same effort to the last 75% of the book. It's an insult to his readers. In the author's bio, he claims to have a BA in English. Seriously????

Fletcher There's a really good story in the author's had here, and for the most part he shows himself to be a capable writer, or at least to have the potential. The book starts off well, but about halfway through seems to run out of gas as he stops developing the main character at all, instead just running him through a series of (mis)adventures. I'm addition, part way through, the grammar and word choices get dramatically worse. It's like the author or his editor stopped a quarter of the way in and let the rest of the book slide. There's something interesting here, and I may give the author another chance, but he really needs to improve his skills.

I enjoy novels where you can get the feel of your characters What drives them and how they feel (I think Dean Koontz is excellent at this!).The writing seemed stilted and immature. Read it all, tho, and glad I'm finished. No more McNamee for me!
