Best case scenario: you’ve got until age thirty-five. Then you just…dry up. Literally. Forget leaving a beautiful corpse; you head into the crematorium looking like a human prune. You could be strong, clever, ruthless. You could be a norm or a mutant freak. You could be the only one left who knows how to keep the power on or extract a bullet. It doesn’t matter. The husk takes everyone. But cheer up; it’s not all bad. Youth throws wild parties when it doesn’t have to worry about Old Age. What fresh hell is this? Temper Eve plans to waste her twenties the way she wasted her teens: starting barroom brawls and stealing everything that isn’t nailed down. Temper needs only two things in the world: action and anonymity. Her close ties with Everbright’s criminal underworld supply plenty of both. All of that is destroyed by a stranger in a chance encounter. Now Temper is on the run, host to an alien presence called the queen, and targeted by everyone from local law enforcement, who want to use her as a weapon, to the medical laboratories, who want to use her to cure the husk. So much for anonymity. Temper has found a way to undo what’s happened to her, to get rid of the queen and return to a safely inconspicuous life inside the gritty hell of Everbright haven. But it means leaving. And life on the outside is a death sentence even more certain than the husk. This ain’t your kid sister’s apocalypse. Don’t let the dystopian setting fool you. This is not a Young Adult novel. But if you’re old enough to vote and you feel mentally equipped to handle the full range of swearing, nudity, sex, violence, nude violence, and drug use that a post-apocalyptic world has to offer, this is the book for you.

Outside Everbright - not your typical sci-fi fare By Courtney Meaker EM Blackwood has created a creepy dystopia with a protagonist that feels richly developed and totally fun to keep up with. Full of humor, "Outside Everbright" follows Temper Eve through a mysterious future where people die young, mutants are on the outskirts, and most every one really wants to fade into drugs rather than deal with their own (short) lives. Temper, a thief by trade and necessity, has attitude and ferocity as well as having a mutation that she's fortunate enough to be able to hide. The beginning feels very much like a noir-ish spin on dystopia, but it quickly becomes a focused adventure evoking many questions about the world she lives in and what she could become. Temper is no f***ing damsel, which is a welcome relief from a lot of stories that use women as weak-willed women who can't stand up for themselves, even when they're the protagonist. Temper is also not inherently good, but falls into that gray area of leader where she's out for herself more than she cares about newcomers. I love my protagonists to be a little messy with gray morals, and again, it's something we don't often see with female protagonists.About the story:When a thieving job goes bad one night, Temper fends off a strange attack in which a foreign entity comes into her subconscious. Her attacker dies at Temper's hands, but now she's got this strange voice in her head and it seems to be grieving the loss of the woman Temper killed in self-defense. At the same time, Temper encounters a mysterious woman dressed head to toe in black, obscuring her scarred features who seems to know a lot about this entity. And now, everyone's trying to kill them. Their journey takes us through different areas of this controlling society as we learn more disturbing details about why everyone dies young, how mutants form, and what it means to communicate to someone inside your brain."Outside Everbright" is a fantastic beginning to a series that I hope has many more books to come.(Full disclosure: I read an early draft of this book and have seen it develop into the story it is now. I've loved it every time I've picked it back up, and often want to begin again right I after I finish it.)

By Gigglegoogle I wasn't sure how to feel about this book. It was fast-paced and action-packed, but sometimes it was difficult to keep up with what kind of book it was. It defies categorization. Is this a travel adventure? A friends-take-on-society tale? A circus-misfits-band-together-to-survive-dystopia story? It's actually a bit of all those things, so there's something for everyone, really. The only thing that pulled me out of the story was a bit of dream sequence towards beginning of the end. It was confusing and frustrating because I didn't know what was happening. But, as I read on and got into the actual end of the book, I understood more of what had happened and really liked it.If you like your heroines to be total bad-asses who are a bit grouchy, but totally loveable, and your dystopia with a lot of action, this is the book for you! I look forward to the next book in the series!

The plot doesn't hem and haw with the action--very compelling and quick to read as there are developments and plot progress with every chapter. The last four or five chapters get a little fast paced and abstract for my mind to comprehend so I had to re-read a bit. But I will definitely read the next in the series.
