Like the first book this one is told in a very streamlined fashion. The plot is quick and the action is fast. Also like the first one the story all takes place in this one book, there are some continuing plot threads that are still out there as it should be in a good series. We learn a little more about the main character Jade and we get to see future problems develop. Due to the style of writing the story is a very quick read and if I had one complaint it would again be that the book wasn't longer. I hope the next book will be longer so we can stay in Jade's world longer but regardless I can't wait to see what happens next I. This wonderful new series.

A Thematically Strong and Engaging Book, Building on its Predecessor By Jared A When I reviewed “Justice Calling,” I compared it to "The Dresden Files," and Bellet continues to validate that comparison with “Murder of Crows.”In “Murder of Crows,” Bellet fleshes out her protagonist in heart-aching form by bringing her back in conflict with the family who has disowned her. It’s hard to talk about this aspect much without giving spoilers, but suffice to say that Bellet doesn’t settle for easy answers here. The subtle influence of family on identity is very much the thematic core of the book, and it is explored with nuance and discernment.But now I’ve made it sound boring. It’s not. A strong mystery element moves the plot forward in a way that kept me glued to the screen of my kindle. Another thing that made it a joy to read was the voice of Jade Crow. Allusions to everything from “Ghostbusters” to Disney’s “Alladin” make her geeky take on the gruesome events of the story funny and engaging. There’s even a direct nod to Dresden Files in there, a “Gee, I wish I had a magic skull to tell me what’s going on here” moment.In sum, if you liked the first one, you’ll love this one. The writing is fast-paced, like Book 1, but the characters are more fleshed out, the problem is more engaging, and the themes are more poignant.Content warning: Urban Fantasy has one foot in horror and this series is no exception. There is a gruesome murder scene and some terrifying images. They are necessary for the plot and they are clearly represented as evil things. They serve to enhance the good vs. evil element of the books, but, y’ know, maybe don’t hand this book to a Kindergartener.
14 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Ten stars if I could By J. Lance I've never read this author before, and ended up buying and reading Book One and Two of this series in one day. This is some of the best writing in the fantasy genre that I've seen in quite awhile. You know those reviews for books where a lot of reviews say "OMG, you must get this book, it was great!" and you buy it and meh? And you wonder what on Earth those other reviewers had seen that to you wasn't there? Well, I guarantee you won't feel let down by this book.The only criticism I have of this book is that at 162 pages it's short, but even that isn't too bad because there's not a slow or dull place in it.I only bother reviewing books that are really good, to thank the author, or really bad, to warn people away. This one is really GOOD. I'm hoping to read a lot more from this author.
