Caia is a fresh college graduate who has the power to start a fire with the snap of her fingers. She isn't ready to grow up and settle down in real life. But ready or not, real life is coming for her. When out-of-towner Brandt bumps into her too many times to be coincidence, Caia begins to realize that her parents might not be who they say they are. They have a secret, one they are willing to die to protect. Ash is a Guardian, genetically enhanced to be stronger, faster, and smarter than an ordinary human. Cool, collected, and highly trained, Ash is one of the Agency's best. But when a long time missing Guardian draws the attention of the Guild, an organization of powerful rune masters, things get personal for Ash. Very personal. Caia is swept up into Ash's world of super soldiers and rune masters and propelled toward an uncertain future. But one thing is always certain when playing with fire - someone is bound to get burned.

It's like a shot of fantastical energy you won't be able to put down. Wilder has built a fascinating and believable world with nuanced characters and organizations that you can't wait to learn more about. Part fantasy, part science fiction, part coming of age story, Flashpoint will immediately pull you into the action. But be warned: Before you know it this first installment in the series will be over and you'll be left with more questions than answers, itching for the next one.

I expected an epic war between the Guardians and the Guild full of imaginative worldbuilding interwoven with fantasy and sci-fi elements. I expected to follow Caia as she was unwillingly thrown into this secret, dangerous world where she’d have to learn the rules and hone her skills to survive. What I got instead was a [sort of] revenge story. Huh?!The book starts out really, really slow. Then, all of sudden, it breaks into hyper speed and wraps up too quickly and too cleanly. The mystery of Caia is concluded suddenly and swiftly thanks to a deus ex machina (the laziness - ugh!) and so few pages were devoted to this miraculous discovery and its implementation (which appeared to involve messing with people’s DNA - how did they accomplish that in 3 days?!) that I’m not totally clear on what happened exactly. Speaking of DNA…that’s another huge problem I had with this book – why is the whole genetic manipulation on unwanted embryos never explored? It is never even addressed as an issue, which I couldn’t swallow as it is inherently controversial. Those embryos have grown up to be warriors without a choice. Clearly, they were raised by this institution so they’re okay with it, but still… The ethical implications should have been explored at the very least. That alone pushed my suspension of disbelief too far to connect with this story.Caia was kind of annoying and kind of mean. I didn’t like her all that much. And Ash was just boring. (As an aside, Ash is a girl, so if you were expecting romance in this story, know that there is none.) I couldn’t relate to either of them, which was disappointing since they were the two point of view characters. I think this story started in the wrong place in time. It should have started later than it did. I also think this story was too short. The swift resolution of the conflict was too unbelievable and the characters didn’t have time to develop, which meant I didn’t have time to develop feelings for them. Perhaps if the story began later in the timeline, then this wouldn’t have been a problem. Either way, it resulted in disconnecting me from the story, making this a forgettable read.I will not continue this series.

It was a quick read, and leaves you wanting more. My only complaint is that it was too short. The main characters really pull you in, and the author keeps you interested in them the whole time. At the end of the book you're ready for the next one to see what happens, to answer all of the questions you will have. There's enough left unanswered to keep you wanting more without feeling abandoned.Flashpoint is well written and I can't wait to read the entire series to see how the characters and story progress!
