I'd even go as far as to say, but for its gay protagonist, this one might have literary agents and publishers clambering. But the fact that Witt has managed to pack so much best-seller bait into the first of his Men of Myth books is hardly his most impressive achievement.In brief, Submerging Inferno tells the story of Brett Wright, a young Southern Californian brought up by his evangelical Christian grandparents who rejected him after he came out to them as a teenager. Now a young man, he leads a somewhat solitary and uneventful life; his only real joy coming from his daily ocean swims. But one evening his whole world is turned upside down after he has a chance encounter with a homicidal bloodsucker and is subsequently rescued by a friendly family of witches who help him hunt the vampire while introducing him to the diverse supernatural world hiding in plain sight.But Wright's greatest challenge has less to do with defeating a killer vampire and more to do with understanding who he is and, ultimately, what it means for his future. Through Wright, the author explores the most fundamental under-pinning of Judeo-Christian belief - the concept of choice. Much like Harry Potter, Wright learns that we are defined solely by the choices we make and not by other's narrow perceptions of who we are. I suspect Witt himself comes from an evangelical background and, as such, has grappled with the stigma attached to homosexuality. So it seems a clever choice to have the main character be an actual demon, making literal the fundamentalist's "demonization" of the LGBT community. After dealing with his grandparents turning their back on him for being gay, Wright also has to overcome the prejudice of the witches and warlocks whose responses to his demonic origins run the gamut from vague suspicion to outright hostility. The character is forced to question himself at every turn. It's a bit painful in that it seems to hint at the author's own personal journey as much as his character's. For an ostensibly popular piece of fiction, this is pretty heavy stuff.While hardly perfect - there's an overabundance of unnecessary dialogue that could stand a visit with the red pencil (particularly between the two romantic leads who redundantly debate the future of their relationship almost to the exclusion of all else) - this is nonetheless a truly gripping start to what promises to be an epic series. Plus, even though this is only one piece of a larger story, it does pass a critical test in that it can certainly be enjoyed as a stand alone. Even the ambiguous ending struck me as deeply satisfying and yet, at the same time, left me eager for more. Witt has certainly created a world worth exploring.

Anchor Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.Rating: 7/10PROS:- The story here is incredibly unique. Every little detail about Brett's life was fascinating to me because it all seemed so new. There are all sorts of weird situations and settings that are unlike anything I've read before.- Brett's confusion (as he discovers his odd personality traits and latent supernatural abilities) is very endearing. I wanted to hug him, pat his cheek, and bake him a dozen cookies. On several different occasions.- Witt does a great job of describing Brett's physical reactions to water and fire and a dozen other mundane, everyday stimuli as his true nature starts to come out.- The romance progresses at a nice pace. No instalove, but not a lot of confusion about the fact that the guys are attracted to each other, either. I liked the uncomplicated nature of their relationship.CONS:- The story is told in first person from both of the main characters' points of view. Okay; I've seen this done before. What's a little puzzling, though, is the fact that the sections are not woven together; there's a large chunk (the first third of the story) from Brett's perspective, then a large chunk from Finn's, then another from Brett's, and so on. If those scenes had been intermingled--like, one chapter from Brett, the next from Finn, the next from Brett--I think I would have found the story a little less disjointed.- About a third of the way in (at the first POV change), the tone of the entire story shifts, turning from a light-hearted fantasy romp with only a hint of real danger into something somber and a little depressing. This didn't particularly upset me; the switch was just so drastic that I wasn't expecting it. I was like, "Whoa. Blood, torture, death? Just like that?"- (This is super picky, but it jolted me a little every time I read it, so I figured I would throw it out here.) Fairly frequently throughout the course of the story, one character or another's "face darkens." The way it's written, it obviously means that the character is blushing, but every time I read that phrase, I read it as the character getting angry about something (or closing off emotionally, or whatever), and I would think, "Wait. Why is he upset all of a sudden? What just happened? Oh... He's just embarrassed."Overall comments: There's quite a bit of unpleasantness in this book, so if you're looking for warm fuzzies, keep looking. (Not for you if you're looking for sex, either: nothing graphic at all.) Also, this is the first in a series, so the ending to this book isn't what I would call satisfying in and of itself. If you're interested in an intriguing story, though, and you don't mind a somber tone and a death here and there, then this is a solid read.

By Jane I knew from the first page.... the first chapter ....the first paragraph that this book was a winner for me in terms of urban fantasy with faeries, warlocks, demons, vampires and more!Is the love Finn and Brett have for each other enough? Is it strong enough to withstand what lies ahead for Brett Wright...the newly discovered man/demon who loves Finn the Warlock, but must find his missing other selves....find out what he is!Finn and Brett thought so when they professed their love for each other. But Brett's problems were demon problems... missing family problems... 'things touching him in the ocean' problems.... setting people on fire problems...burning a vampire problems......andWho is Brett Wright? Demon? Man? ...with a missing past.Now the biggest problem is a vampire who was set on fire by Brett and who is exacting revenge in a brutal way...murder.Excellent story with fairies, nymphs, vamps, werewolves and Brett's lover, a warlock by the name of Finn. The author writes in a way that lets the story evolve smoothly and easily.Well developed characters makes you feel you know them. Finn and his family of witches and warlocks and Brett...his lover who is trying to cope with his new found powers. ...and may be discovering more.Will Brett find his roots? The power of water, fire and love will show him the way.I am looking forward to Part II. Perfectly written urban fantasy!
