Insights—like Darwin’s understanding of the way evolution actually works, and Watson and Crick’s breakthrough discoveries about the structure of DNA—can change the world. We also need insights into the everyday things that frustrate and confuse us so that we can more effectively solve problems and get things done. Yet we know very little about when, why, or how insights are formed—or what blocks them. In Seeing What Others Don’t, renowned cognitive psychologist Gary Klein unravels the mystery.Klein is a keen observer of people in their natural settings—scientists, businesspeople, firefighters, police officers, soldiers, family members, friends, himself—and uses a marvelous variety of stories to illuminate his research into what insights are and how they happen. What, for example, enabled Harry Markopolos to put the finger on Bernie Madoff? How did Dr. Michael Gottlieb make the connections between different patients that allowed him to publish the first announcement of the AIDS epidemic? What did Admiral Yamamoto see (and what did the Americans miss) in a 1940 British attack on the Italian fleet that enabled him to develop the strategy of attack at Pearl Harbor? How did a “smokejumper” see that setting another fire would save his life, while those who ignored his insight perished? How did Martin Chalfie come up with a million-dollar idea (and a Nobel Prize) for a natural flashlight that enabled researchers to look inside living organisms to watch biological processes in action?Klein also dissects impediments to insight, such as when organizations claim to value employee creativity and to encourage breakthroughs but in reality block disruptive ideas and prioritize avoidance of mistakes. Or when information technology systems are “dumb by design” and block potential discoveries. Both scientifically sophisticated and fun to read, Seeing What Others Don’t shows that insight is not just a “eureka!” moment but a whole new way of understanding.

Review “Brilliant discourse on a fascinating subject. It's written in a crisp, fluent, Gladwellish way and the pages flit by.”—Management Today“His analysis of how Google searches and corporate culture inhibit insight is intriguing, while suggestions for improving the chances of having a breakthrough are practical and useful for many facets of life.” —Publishers Weekly“No one has taught me more about the complexities and mysteries of human decision-making than Gary Klein.” —Malcolm Gladwell"Intriguing findings that should play a transformative role, not only in the field of psychology, but also in corporate boardrooms."—Kirkus Reviews "A valuable resource for business professionals to return to over again.”—Library Journal“Written in a breezy yet informative conversational style, Seeing What Others Don’t is a good read and helps to stimulate our own thinking about how insights occur.”—Strategy & Leadership“Gary Klein pins down what until now has been the elusive topic of insight in his best and most personal work yet. The examples are memorable and Klein translates them into subtle and powerful lessons for practitioners and academics alike.” —Karl Weick, Rensis Likert Distinguished University Professor, Emeritus, University of Michigan“Gary Klein’s brilliant book is a superb analysis of why and how some people are able to understand things others do not. As one of Gary’s students and disciples I can attest to the exceptional value his insights have added to my own leadership and decision making ability. This new book is a must read for all leaders and should be added to his other works as the definitive collection on how decisions are, and should be, made.” —General Anthony C. Zinni USMC (Retired)“Gary Klein has done it again in this brilliant and ‘insightful’ book about how our minds work and how we make sense out what is in front of us. Seeing What Others Don't is remarkable on many fronts, most notably in being a pleasure to read, easy to grasp and filled with practical advice. It is a must read for parents, executives, coaches, teachers, healthcare providers, military tacticians, security and intelligence agents and those in dangerous and stressful positions. Read, learn, perform and enjoy.” —Eduardo Salas, Ph.D., president of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society

Gaining insight By Pamela Ey Gary Klein is a giant in the research field relating to how people actually think and make decisions in natural settings. In this book, he describes the value of gaining insight with reducing errors as two ways to increase individual and organizational performance. Both are needed, but reducing errors only gets us so far. There is much more to be gained by a dedicated focus in increasing insight. The book is organized in 3 sections: How insights are triggered, the things that interfere with insights, and how we can foster insight in self, others and organizations. Throughout there are interesting, well written stories to illustrate the concepts. As always, Klein includes a complete reference section. Since I have read all of Klein's books, I find this one is an excellent deeper dive into Streetlights and Shadows - but you can read this book without having read his other work and you won't be lost. Seeing What Others Don't is great for individuals interested in improving the quality of their own thinking, for leaders in organizations, and it would be a great supplement for an MBA level course of study.

A brilliant explanation of what triggers insights, what interferes with recognizing them, and how to nourish them By Robert Morris Long ago, I realized that the true value of most (if not all) breakthrough insights is best determined by the nature and extent of the disruptive impact they have on the given status quo. Here is a three-part challenge:1. How to create an environment within which insights are most likely to occur?2. How to recognize and then grasp them?3. How to nourish their development and, if necessary, defend them while in that process? These are among the questions to which Gary Klein responds and he does so with a series of brilliant insights of his own.In 2005, he learned about a movement called "positive psychology," started by a psychotherapist - Martin Seligman - who was determined to add "meaning and pleasure to the lives of his clients" by emphasizing the positive dimension of their experience. "I felt that the concept of positive psychology applied to decision making as well," Klein notes, and suggests that to improve performance - increase the quality of decisions - "we need two things. The down arrow is what we have to reduce, errors. The up arrow is what we have to increase, insights. Performance depends on doing both of these things."Klein focuses on 120 "cases" that demonstrate one or (in most instances) several of five strategies: Connections (dots, yes, but also similarities, causal relationships, and interdependence); Coincidences (clues to possible patterns of evidence and verification); Curiosities (initially, inexplicable phenomena that require closer attention); Contradictions (initially viewed as absurdities but then...); and Creative Desperation (unexpectedly resolving a problem that seems unsolvable). It should also be noted that there are situations when what seem, at first, to be insignificant insights are in fact like individual pieces of a puzzle that, when fully assembled, replicates one of Jackson Pollock's abstract expressionist paintings such as "No. 5, 1948" or "Autumn Rhythm, 1950." Hence the importance of mastering all five of the strategies, and, developing discipline sufficient to eliminate irrelevancies but the determination to explore anomalies and the courage to stay the course to increased understanding. These are among the dozens of business subjects and issues of special interest and value to me, also listed to indicate the scope of Klein 's coverage.o Architectural Trenches (Pages 28-31)o The Battle of Taranto (33-36)o The Mother of All Scientific Insights (39-41)o The Greatest Astronomical Discovery of the Twentieth Century (46-48)o Banking on Contradictions (62-69)o Looking at the Data (91-93)o The Logic of Discovery (101-108)o Stupidity in Action (114-118)o Flawed Beliefs (121-125)o Rescuing Jemima Boone, wife of Daniel Boone](140-148)o The Motivations [to Stifle Insights] (151-157)o Down-Arrow Methods to Reduce Errors and Uncertainty (160-167)o How NOT to Hunt for Insights (171-178)o Diagnosis [when helping others], and, Diagnosis Plus Action (193-199)o [How to] Increase Organizational Willpower (213-221)o Tips for Becoming an Insight Hunter (235-236)When concluding his book, Gary Klein makes a number of especially important observations that I have pulled together in a mosaic of brief excerpts. They suggest the thrust and flavor of his insightful curiosity. "I see the examples in this book as a collective celebration of our capacity for gaining insights, a corrective to the gloomy picture offered by the heuristics-and-biases community. [The same community of negativism and myopia that Martin Seligman rejected years ago.] Insights help us to escape the confinements of perfection, which traps us in a compulsion to avoid errors and in a fixation on the original plan or vision...The magic of insights stems from the force for noticing connections, coincidences, and curiosities; the force for detecting contradictions; and the force of creativity unleashed by desperation. The magic lives inside us, stirring restlessly."Those who read this book will be well-prepared to release that magic and then use its power for discovery and creation in ways and to an extent that may once have been inconceivable.

Author Gary Klein provides so many studies because he has found that insights come about in many different ways. He organizes this slightly overwhelming amount of information into the categories of connections, coincidences, curiosities, contradictions, and creative desperations. Crafty, isn't he?After explaining how combinations of these insightful encounters develop good ideas, he moves on to describe common obstacles that interfere with insghts. This section brought immediately to mind the discoveries in group dynamics that the Synectics group made in the 60, particularly the Discount Revenge Cycle, which occurs when people are not careful in responding to another's "wacky" idea. The Practice of Creativity: A Manual for Dynamic Group Problem-Solving is one of my favorite books for its detailed approach to unifying collective intelligence into fresh ideas in a similar way to the "positive psychology" movement that Klein incorporates in his book.Overall, this is an interesting and well-written book that I recommend to managers and general audiences alike.

What if there was a nuclear war? What would really happen afterwards? There have been many novels written on the subject, but these seldom deal with the topic in a realistic fashion. Instead, the story lines tend to be built around bigger-than-life characters who struggle to overcome nearly impossible odds in highly dystopian scenarios. But, in truth, the reality after such an event would be much different. There will be no super heroes in a post-apocalyptic world. In fact, there will be few heroes at all. The people who, for better or worse, are left behind by luck or design would be, for the most part, very ordinary and the obstacles in their path would difficult to overcome. During the first few years after such an event most of those persons who manage to survive the initial onslaught of a nuclear war will have died. This would be the case because they were not prepared, physically or otherwise, to overcome the hardships. The reasons why these people would not make will be explored in the pages of this novel. Likewise, there will be some who, at the end of the painful period, come out virtually unscathed. These are the survivalists. In this book, the story will be centered around a divorced man who happened to be going to the mountains with his two kids for a Thanksgiving vacation when the bombs fall. But the story is not only about these three individuals, but also about the many others with whom they come in contact, including some persons who become members of a new family-like social unit living in a secluded part of the country, as well as the many other members of the new society in which they live. This is Part Four of the series. In it this particular group of survivors begin to integrate into the small local community that was spared the destruction of a nuclear war due to its remoteness.

I gave these 4 nooks 1 star, because there was no option for zero stars. That said, here's why - 1) unrealistic dialog. No one says "I will see to that," in response to being given instructions. People use contractions. They say Okay, Got it, and Sure. 2) Foreshadowing that leads up to nothing. In one scene, the main character (Jason) finds out his preteen daughter and 2 young children are home alone. He moves from walking to jogging to a dead run all the way home, runs in to the house and finds...nothing wrong. This happens continually. Jason spends dozens of pages going on about the power going out, the solar panels not having enough sun, the need to preserve power, and how he doesn't know anything about how the solar system works. There is so much foreshadowing that you are expecting blackness at any moment. It never happens. Not only that, but a mechanic conveniently shows up in the 4th book. 3) Apocalypse now. It is supposed to be terrible and awful out in the world, starving hoards, gangs, the usual, yet we only see one example at the very beginning of the book, and even that is only 2 men raiding empty houses. Yet Jason continually acts as if there were hourly examples of the apocalypse showing up on their door steps. 4) Normalcy. With the exception of Jason's extreme paranoia and the lack of electronics, life goes on as if nothing is wrong. The biggest problem they have is running out of eggs. There is one situation, brought on by the teenage son, that could have been a major plot point or life changing event, but even that goes far too smoothly. Overall, the believability factor for this being life after a nuclear bomb is just not there.

I got all but one thru a Kindle a Unlimited. If I had to pay even a dollar for as short as each book I would not have bought them. Not that I haven't enjoyed them, but it is like a soap opera. You read a short book then have to start the other one. I would have preferred paying usual kindle price and had them all in one book. I ht when Amazon or author does it. It is like bait and switch type

Welcome to Erythleh; a world of politics, love, hurt, heartache and war. This is a world where farmers live side-by-side with werewolves, where soldiers fight alongside a cavalry of gryphons, and where your worst enemy might be the person that should be closest to you. Jorrell and Serwren are in love, naively and completely in love; in the way that only teenagers can be. They have their whole lives planned out ahead of them and then fate, and Serwren's jealous brother, conspire to keep them apart. Despite years of separation, through all the mortal challenges that they face, their love barely falters. They grow and learn more about themselves and the world around them. When they are, finally, reunited, they realise that duty, responsibility and the fate of their nation may ultimately take precedence over their own desires.

I love it By vash 5 Bright StarsI love this author who can adapt from writing hardcore MC to whimsical fantasy romance.Jorrell and Serwren are in love but were kept apart by jealousy. After years of separation, finally reunited, their love grow and they learn that their love for one another never change."I'm not made of glass," Serwren argued gently."No," Jorrell pressed his lips to hers. "You are infinitely more precious."They were standing so close together that Serwren saw the tear that trembled over the edge of the lid of Jorrell's eye. She freed her hand from his, and reached between them to catch it on her fingertips. The movement, the touch, seemed to startle Jorrell out of his thoughts. His face remained set in stern lines, but his eyes lit with intent, with need. Serwren let out a girlish squeak when Jorrell suddenly dipped, caught one arm behind her knees, and swept her legs from under as he lifted her into his arms.Their love had endured years of separation. If it could survive thus far, Serwren had no doubt that they could only be stronger together. Whatever their stars foretold, they would face those challenges, and the resulting failures and victories, together, forever.

Her talent and creativity is amazing. She wrote one of my favorite ever shifter books (Powerless) and well as one of my favorite outlaw MC series. You do not usually see such disparate genres executed so flawlessly by the same author. I wanted to read more from Johnson and was unhappy that her next offering was in the fantasy genre since that is definitely not a favorite of mine. To make matters worse the plot was one I typically avoid; the long separation between H and h. I usually lament the lost time too much to fully enjoy the book. Anyway, these 2 strikes against this book led to the 5 months it sat untouched on my Kindle. I should have had more faith in Johnson. I finally decided to pick the book up and then could not put it down. She created an incredibly vivid world. The plot was intricate and engaging; filled with intrigue and adventure. Amazing. The love story of the H and h as children and then years later as physically and emotionally scared adults pulled at my heart in a good way. Breathtaking. So even if fantasy is not your romance genre of choice I think you will still enjoy this beautifully written book.

There are light moments, emotional moments and mysterious moments, but I wouldn't characterize the entire novel as any ONE of those things. It's many things and has many moods. It's engaging and fun and adventurous and even a little scary and romantic. The Glass Gargoyle is everything that a fantasy novel should be and more. With faeries, minotaurs, elves, and a myriad of other fantasy creatures, all of whom are intelligent characters, there is a huge racial diversity in this world and it's clear that we're somewhere (perhaps some-when) else. We're kept grounded by the first-person point of view as well as the narrator's immediate world of universities and archeological dig sites as well as pubs and modest apartments. I can't wait to read it again!!

She (too) easily picks up Alric, at her favorite bar. When she takes him to the local crime lord, who wanted him, he fights off ALL the guards... luckily, she still got paid, because her rent is past due. Unfortunately, her horrid landlady turns up dead not long after that, and she's not the last body Taryn has to deal with. The pace quickly picks up with alternating rescues between Taryn and Alric, Taryn's faeries getting drunk and into fights, and a mysterious artifact tied to the dig site she was working at. I thought the middle spun the same events a couple too many times, and some of the action scenes were so swiftly summed up, that I had to re-read them. I liked the banter between all the characters, it was hilarious, and they're all special and liable and diverse. I wish there had been some more clues about just what Taryn can do or who she really is. Luckily the next two books are both released this year, so I can find out soon.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I really enjoyed this book By emeraldcity I really enjoyed this book. Very fun and it moves along, does not bog down in a lot of needless description.I love the fighting fairies and Taryn’s seemingly endless way of trouble finding her in the strangest of circumstances. I admit, I said the same thing at the end of the book as Taryn did as I wanted more NOW. I am very glad the next installment will be coming soon as I need to find out what happens next.Great read for those looking for a good paced book and fun fantasy story.

I really like some of the twist with the story line too.I like sci-fi and time travel and this didn't disappoint. It really made me go and think about this happening in our own lives and the possibilities if were able to go and change an event in history.I like Connor and Marcus characters they are both determined and smart. This story can keep going and going because they can keep changing things....it makes you wonder do they ever get it right????

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Time Travel By GemCaprica This short story was a little confusing. Maybe if it had been longer and the characters more developed it would have had more clarity. I understood who all the characters were except one, and why he was chosen to try to change the future by sending messages to the past. If there is a follow-up book I'll be tempted to get it so I can catch a grip on what is happening and why.

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. A bit superficial... but a colorful, entertaining read nonetheless By Chestnut I enjoyed this book and read it really quickly, even though I generally avoid reading books because I'm a slow reader and pretty ADD about it. This one is mostly pictures, yoga instructions, and recipes with Rachel's life story intertwined so it's really not heavy on text anyway. Her message is very upbeat and positive, much like her Instagram feed and public presence. My complaint about the book, though, is how scattered it is, and how it just skims the surface of some very deep topics - her life story included. Maybe this was at the request of the publishers and not from the author's intent.... But she does say somewhere that the book was written over the most chaotic, travel-intensive year of her life, and IMHO that really comes through in the writing. She touches on the surface of her life story and what brought her to the lifestyle she now leads, but didn't really go into depth any further than the TV and radio interviews I've heard her do. She also dips into some of her deeper insights on life and growth, and the purpose of yoga, but again, it felt choppy and almost frantic, and didn't go into anything in depth. This is more of a coffee table book... with light stories intertwined. There are a few interesting recipes like a raw coconut chocolate, but also some irrelevant stuff thrown in (a recipe for fresh herbal tea??) From reading Rachel Brathen's Instagram feed over time, I would say this woman has more of a writer within her than this book lets on. If you're looking for something meaty, you will be disappointed. If you're looking for color, light inspiration, and some very basic yoga instruction, this might keep you occupied for a few hours. I, for one, will be waiting for something more mature and substantial from Rachel Brathen after she's lived some more life and gives another go at writing a book. ;)

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. READ IT. She's a life changer. By Jude Pilchard. It's like when you first get the book there is this energy about it. This excitement. It is beautifully written, in a way that is encouraging, not condescending. Her poses and pictures are inspiring and the yoga sequences and recipes inside are heavenly.

19 of 21 people found the following review helpful. A great read and beautiful guide to a more balanced...and yoga filled...life! By Reviews on Amazon I have been practicing yoga on and off for 15 years; and it is honestly one of my favorite things to do but also often a little challenging to fit in - I manage to work out each day but finding a yoga class that I can fit in between work is tough and for that reason I typically practice just once a week! I just felt like I needed a little more inspiration and with all the rave reviews for Yoga Girl , I went ahead and purchased this book!I will begin with the first thing that stood out, and that is the pictures. Beautiful inspiring shots of yoga poses, or just simple every day moments set in stunning scenery! Makes me just want to practice more, preferably in a location that is depicted in this book! But what also is notable, is Yoga Girl aka Rachel Brathen , is a normal looking healthy individual! There are so many books out there , with tiny, almost emaciated people airbrushed to perfection, telling others how to reach those standards which, are smoke and mirrors thanks to careful editing or require mammoth daily exercise time and a diet of nothing but green smoothies! It is refreshing to see a healthy and attainable look featured! The introduction simply makes sense - the fact that we all run around, trying to earn more, own more, diet more, look better, searching for balance when in fact balance simply comes from slowing down " understanding your body and needs". I also love, love, love her mantra that balance means you can have your red wine and your green juice, your chocolate and your kale - I have always believed in a healthy and happy balance and yoga Girl does too!The book is then divided into 7 chapters - the first Yoga Every Damn Day looks the lives we lead and finding ways to incorporate balance and yes, yoga into our lives - simple measures we can take. It is well written and encouraging; peppered with a Sun Salutation Sequence as well as notes for success,Chapter two talks about in order to love the future, you need to love "what has come before" and the author takes us through her background with very different beginnings, involving drugs, alcohol and excessive behavior and , how this shaped her path and the life she leads today! Its compelling reading; and the notion of making peace with the past makes sense and we cannot change what has happened, only learn! This section has a great sequence : " Twists, hips and hamstrings"Chapter three talks about life paths, opportunities, and taking charge of our lives, again heavily centered around the experience of the author ,but detailing ways we can make change too. The yoga sequence is core, balance and shoulder work.Chapter 4 is about the soul ; the energy we put out, finding balance, and listening to your body , ending with a great Vinyasa sequence, including a beginners guide. Chapter 5 is something I can certainly stand to follow more and that is going with the flow, accepting the fact that challenge is part of life, and embracing the good times as well as the bad, with a great restorative sequence to follow! Chapter six helps readers to put love over fear - moving past fears, understanding that nervous energy is us breaking new ground and collecting new experiences including a detailed and challenging inversion set! Finally we end with moments of silence; the manta: "We must love ourselves in order to receive love from others". This section had my favorite photography; and simply talks about being present in our lives and seeing the beauty that surrounds us. I also loved the fact that this section ends with medication; and is a simple, attainable guide to getting started! There is so much to love about this book. Though it can help us achieve more balance and get more yoga into our lives, it is not done in a preachy way, but instead the authors shares personal experiences from her life that tie back to changes we can make. The workout sequences are detailed both in pictures and illustrations making them easy to follow along, and they are compact enough that you could do a little each day, or make one longer workout! There are even recipes thrown in - nothing necessarily new or complicated, but healthy, plant based ideas that are simple and easy to make!A great read and beautiful guide to a more balanced...and yoga filled...life!

PDF Ebook Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematically Deceived the Public, by Steven Druker

This book uncovers the biggest scientific fraud of our age. It tells the fascinating and frequently astounding story of how the massive enterprise to restructure the genetic core of the world's food supply came into being, how it advanced by consistently violating the protocols of science, and how for more than three decades, hundreds of eminent biologists and esteemed institutions have systematically contorted the truth in order to conceal the unique risks of its products–and get them onto our dinner plates.

Altered Genes, Twisted Truth provides a graphic account of how this elaborate fraud was crafted and how it not only deceived the general public, but Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and a host of other astute and influential individuals as well. The book also exposes how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was induced to become a key accomplice--and how it has broken the law and repeatedly lied in order to usher genetically engineered foods onto the market without the safety testing that's required by federal statute. As a result, for fifteen years America's families have been regularly ingesting a group of novel products that the FDA's own scientific staff had previously determined to be unduly hazardous to human health.

By the time this gripping story comes to a close, it will be clear that the degradation of science it documents has not only been unsavory but unprecedented--and that in no other instance have so many scientists so seriously subverted the standards they were trained to uphold, misled so many people, and imposed such magnitude of risk on both human health and the health of the environment.

Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematically Deceived the Public, by Steven Druker

Review

“Without doubt, one of the most important books of the last 50 years. I shall urge everyone I know who cares about life on earth, and the future of their children, and children’s children, to read it. . . . Steven Druker is a hero. He deserves at least a Nobel Prize.”--Jane Goodall, Ph.D. (from the Foreword)

“A fascinating book: highly informative, eminently readable, and most enjoyable. It’s a real page-turner and an eye-opener.”--Richard C. Jennings, Ph.D., Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge, UK

“This incisive and insightful book is truly outstanding. Not only is it well-reasoned and scientifically solid, it's a pleasure to read--and a must-read. Through its masterful marshalling of facts, it dispels the cloud of disinformation that has misled people into believing that GE foods have been adequately tested and don't entail abnormal risk.” --David Schubert, Ph.D. molecular biologist and Head of Cellular Neurobiology, Salk Institute for Biological Studies

“Altered Genes, Twisted Truth is lucid, illuminating, and alarming. As a former New York City prosecutor, I was shocked to discover how the FDA illegally exempted GE foods from the rigorous testing mandated by federal statute. And as the mother of three young kids, I was outraged to learn how America’s children are being callously exposed to experimental foods that were deemed abnormally risky by the FDA’s own experts.”--Tara-Cook Littman, J.D.

“Steven Druker has written a great book that could well be a milestone in the endeavor to establish a scientifically sound policy on genetically engineered foods. The evidence is comprehensive, clear, and compelling; and its credibility is irrefutable. No one has documented other cases of irresponsible behavior by government regulators and the scientific establishment nearly as well as Druker documents this one. His book should be widely read and thoroughly heeded.”--John Ikerd, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Agricultural and Applied Economics, University of Missouri – Columbia

“Altered Genes, Twisted Truth will stand as a landmark. It should be required reading in every university biology course.”--Joseph Cummins, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Genetics, Western University, London, Ontario

“Steven Druker's meticulously documented, well-crafted, and spellbinding narrative should serve as a clarion call to all of us. In particular, his chapter detailing the deadly epidemic of 1989-90 that was linked with a genetically engineered food supplement is especially significant. I and my Mayo Clinic colleagues were active participants in the attempt to identify the cause of this epidemic. Druker provides a comprehensive analysis of all the evidence and also presents new findings from our work. Overall his discussion of this tragic event, as well as its ominous implications, is the most comprehensive, evenlybalanced and accurate account that I have read.”--Stephen Naylor, PhD CEO and Chairman of MaiHealth Inc., Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, & Pharmacology Mayo Clinic (1991-2001)

“Steven Druker has done a beautiful job of weaving a compelling scientific argument into an engaging narrative that often reads like a detective story, and he makes his points dramatically and clearly. The examination of genetic engineering from the standpoint of software engineering is especially insightful, exposing how the former is more like a ‘hackathon’ than a careful, systematic methodology for revising complex information systems. I will recommend this book to my friends.”--Thomas J. McCabe, developer of the cyclomatic complexity software metric, a key analytic tool in computer programming employed throughout the world

“Based on over 30 years of teaching computer science at universities and on extensive experience as a programmer in private industry, I can state that Steven Druker has done an excellent job of demonstrating the recklessness of the current practices of genetic engineering in comparison to the established practices of software engineering. His book presents a striking contrast between the two fields, showing how software engineers progressively developed greater awareness of the inherent risks of altering complex information systems – and accordingly developed more rigorous procedures for managing them – while genetic technicians have largely failed to do either, despite the fact that the information systems they alter are far more complex, and far less comprehended, than any human-made system.”--Ralph Bunker, PhD

“Steven Druker has written one of the few books I have encountered, in my many years of public interest work, with the capacity to drive major change in a major issue. What Ralph Nader’s Unsafe at Any Speed was to the auto industry and what Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was to synthetic pesticides, Altered Genes, Twisted Truth will be to genetically engineered food. It is profoundly penetrating, illuminating, and compelling, and it could stimulate a monumental and beneficial shift in our system of food production.”--Joan Levin, JD, MPH

“Altered Genes, Twisted Truth is a remarkable work that may well change the public conversation on one of the most important issues of our day. If the numerous revelations it contains become widely known, the arguments being used to defend genetically engineered foods will be untenable.”--Frederick Kirschenmann, Phd Distinguished Fellow, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, Iowa State University, Author of Cultivating an Ecological Conscience

“Druker's brilliant exposé catches the promoters of GE food red-handed: falsifying data, corrupting regulators, lying to Congress. He thoroughly demonstrates how distortions and deceptions have been piled one on top of another, year after year, producing a global industry that teeters on a foundation of fraud and denial. This book is sure to send shock waves around the world."--Jeffrey M. Smith, international bestselling author of Seeds of Deception & Genetic Roulette

“Altered Genes, Twisted Truth is very readable, thorough, logical and thought-provoking. Steven Druker exposes shenanigans employed to promote genetic engineering that will surprise even those who have followed the ag-biotech industry closely for years. I strongly recommend his book.”--Belinda Martineau, Ph.D., a co-developer of the first genetically engineered whole food and author of First Fruit: The Creation of the Flavr Savr™ Tomato and the Birth of Biotech Foods

“Altered Genes, Twisted Truth reveals how the inception of molecular biotechnology ignited a battle between those committed to scientific accuracy and the public interest and those who saw genetic engineering’s commercial potential. Steven Druker’s meticulously researched book pieces together the deeply disturbing and tremendously important history of the intertwined science and politics of GMOs. Understanding this ongoing struggle is a key to understanding science in the modern world.”--Allison Wilson, PhD molecular geneticist, Science Director, The Bioscience Resource Project

About the Author

Steven M. Druker is a public interest attorney who, as executive director of the Alliance for Bio-Integrity, initiated a lawsuit that forced the FDA to divulge its files on genetically engineered foods. This revealed that politically appointed administrators had covered up the warnings of their own scientists about the unusual risks of these foods and then allowed them to be marketed illegally. In organizing the suit, he assembled an unprecedented coalition of eminent scientists and religious leaders to stand with his organization as co-plaintiffs - the first time scientists had sued a federal administrative agency on the grounds that one of its policies is scientifically unsound.

He is a prominent commentator on the risks of GE foods and has served on the food safety panels at conferences held by the National Research Council and the FDA, has given lectures at numerous universities (including the Biological Laboratories at Harvard), and has met with government officials throughout the world, including the heads of food safety for France, Ireland, and Australia. In 1998, he was invited to the White House Executive Offices to discuss risks of GE crops with a task force of the President's Council on Environmental Quality. His articles on GE food have appeared in several respected publications, including The Congressional Quarterly Researcher, The Parliament Magazine, and The Financial Times. He earned his B.A. in philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley (with high honors that included a special award for "Outstanding Accomplishment") and received his Juris Doctor from the same institution (and was elected to both the Law Review and the legal honor society).

A meticulously documented account of corporate influence overriding sound science at the U.S. FDA By n brown Altered Genes, Twisted Truth meticulously documents the case against the U.S. government’s laissez-faire policy on genetically engineered foods.Author Steven Druker raises an interesting parallel between computer systems and genetic manipulation. While computer systems – especially those that are life-dependent and life-sustaining – are carefully tested and retested to make sure that no “glitch” or “bug” could cause catastrophic harm, alterations to the far more complex genetic code of plants are made without similar precautions. These novel plants are grown, harvested, and consumed with little or no independent testing. Two far-reaching reviews of GMO safety studies—one conducted by the University of Minnesota and another spearheaded by Dr. Jose L. Domingo, editor in chief of the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology—both found that about half of the studies reviewed linked GMO consumption to health risks. If a car’s brakes failed in half of its pre-market road tests, that car would certainly be kept off the market until it met basic safety standards.Altered Genes, Twisted Truth is a clarion call for a much closer examination of the environmental and health issues raised by each and every one of these products of industry laboratories. Everyone concerned about human health, the health of our land, and the future of food must demand answers to the serious questions raised in this book.

Steven Druker, filed a lawsuit against the FDA The book, Altered Genes, Twisted Truth, features a foreword by the renowned primatologist Dame Jane Goodall, hailing it as “without doubt one of the most important books of the last 50 years”.The book is the result of more than 15 years of intensive research and investigation by Druker, who came to prominence for initiating a lawsuit against the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that forced it to divulge its files on GM foods. Those files revealed that GM foods first achieved commercialisation in 1992 only because the FDA:• Covered up the extensive warnings of its own scientists about their dangers.• Lied about the facts.• And then violated federal food safety law by permitting these foods to be marketed without having been proven safe through standard testing. The book points out that if the FDA had heeded its own experts’ advice and publicly acknowledged their warnings that GM foods entailed higher risks than their conventional counterparts, the GM food venture would have imploded and never gained traction anywhere.I was completely shocked by what I read.

132 of 143 people found the following review helpful. The book the agrichemical industry doesn't want you to read... By Concerned Parent Altered Genes, Twisted Truth clearly demonstrates how political and corporate considerations may trump science not only in our federal agencies, but even in the ivory towers of research science. This unhappy and, until now, largely unpublicized, saga therefore has implications far beyond agriculture or genetics. Author Steven Druker points out, with ample documentation, how for at least the past three decades, the public has been exposed to a façade of reassurance, while dissenting voices, however expert, experienced or distinguished, have been shunted aside, spurned, and even smeared. Today the Emperor’s clothes have surely been strewn about the landscape where genetically engineered foods are concerned, and those who doubt this need only follow the carefully documented steps in Altered Genes, Twisted Truth to comprehend the accuracy of this title. No matter which side of this debate you currently occupy, this book is a must read!

“For starters, honey, I don't believe in Hell--that's just some old man's way of telling me reasons why I can't be me. Like “biology is destiny” means I have to be a boy.” -- “Lady Marmalade’s Special Place in Hell” by David Sklar There have always been stories of those willing to blur or transcend the traditional gender roles. Some do it out of necessity, others are merely embracing their true selves. Sometimes it’s for fun, other times survival. Every culture has their gender benders, their cross-dressers, their rule breakers. From Bugs Bunny to Mulan, Alanna of Trebond to Klinger, our folk heroes and cultural icons push boundaries and challenge expectations. In Scheherazade’s Façade, twelve of today’s most intriguing authors spin tales of magic, mystery, self-discovery and adventure, each with a twist. In these pages you’ll find shape-shifting dragons, triumphant drag queens, tragic selkies, lost princes and would-be warriors. You’ll find star-crossed lovers and mysterious travelers, cross-dressers and gender bending heroes of all sorts. Featuring all-new fantasy and urban fantasy from Tanith Lee, Sarah Rees Brennan, Tiffany Trent, Aliette de Bodard, Alma Alexander, David Sklar, Melissa Mead, C.S. MacCath, Paolo Chikiamco, Sunny Moraine, Lyn C.A. Gardner, and Shanna Germain.

Stephens I also subscribed via Kickstarter and frankly the final product was worth the wait (shed a tear for editor Michael M. Jones' hair which he no doubt pulled out follicle by follicle as he went through this tortuous process).12 original stories and nary a clunker among them. Since they've all been described above, I'll merely say that for me the outstanding stories are by Aliette de Bodard (who just keeps getting better and better), Sarah Rees Brennan, Paolo Chikiamco, and Tanith Lee. Brennan and Chikiamco in particular are writers I was unfamiliar with and will definitely keep an eye out for in the future.Surprisingly, none of these stories are listed in the Locus Recommended Reading List for 2012. I ascribe this to the difficult midwifing of the anthology, which is really a crying shame as some of these stories are among the best I read for 2012.Highly Recommended.

Individually, a few of the stories in this collection were amazing, a few were okay, and at least one I actively disliked. But for me, the strength of the amazing ones more than made up for the rest, and also helped to illustrate the whole point of the collection, as put forth by Jones in his delightful introduction. This is an important and timely collection about the mutability of gender and sex, with fantastical elements at the forefront but ultimately serving to express real truths. A very broad array of stories with something for everyone!

The Earth is in ruins. Cities and nations are destroyed. Brant is a synthetic, a machine made in the image of man who dreams of bringing humans back into the world. Close to achieving his goal, his tiny cradle of life is now threatened by ominous black clouds that roll in from the north and bring darkness to the land. In the wasteland, the cannibalistic Marauders begin to escalate their war with the resistance fighters of Ascension. As resources dwindle, both sides become more ruthless, endangering all within the region. Brant will be forced to once again return to the wasteland and into the midst of the battle to confront the source of the darkness in an attempt to save all that he has created. Healy on one of the daily free/low cost e-book emails I get. Freebooksy, Book Bub, OHFB, one of those. I typically grab any that look even vaguely interesting. Small price to pay for what sometimes turns out to be a nice surprise. Well WOW. I could not put these down. I read the first one, AFTER THE WINTER, in just a matter of a few days, and immediately went looking for others, finding THE SEEDS of A NEW EARTH and THE FIRES of YESTERDAY on Amazon.com.In a week I finished these two, and am truly disappointed to have come to the end of this heartwarming saga. During the series, I was touched, moved, brought almost to tears, raging against the bad guys, pulling for our valiant champion, and hoping for his heroine. I found myself drawn completely INTO the story, feeling what they felt, seeing what they saw.For a new indie writer, Mark has truly developed a feel for writing that is engaging and fun. I will read his next series with great interest. With great enthusiasm I recommend this series to any reader who enjoys seeing how things might turn out in a world where greed and power-hungry humans care more for the immediate than for the future welfare of the planet that sustains them.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A fabulous end to a brilliant trilogy... By Saul Caldwell Mark R. Healy has definitely saved the best til last in this series. What an incredible end to this trilogy this was.... when I finally managed to put it down, bleary eyed at 4am. The pace of the story is breathtaking as Brant stumbles from crisis to crisis in this post-apocalyptic, nightmare vision of a world to come. It's deliciously dark at times as it drags your emotions on a wild journey, leaving you both anxious and fearful of turning to the next page to see how this story unfolds.I've thoroughly enjoyed this series and grown very fond of the characters in it. It's a real shame this has come to an end. I'll definitely keep an eye out for further releases by this author.A top quality read..

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. WILD RIDE By kendra BOOK ONEI received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review....this is the fist book in a series of three and I have to say I am very intrigued by this first book.Rebecca is a 30something that owns her own business but has never been married and has never really had a serious relationship, but she is having feelings for the young intern from her work, but she thinks starting anything with him would be wrong A because she is his boss and B there is a 12 year age gap between them with her being the older of the two. After a night out with Jason the intern Rebecca almost makes the mistake of going home with him when in the bar she thinks she sees Kade her highschool crush/bestfriend and it brings up all the old feelings she had for him and the thoughts on why he never made a move on her in high school. What will Rebecca do, act on her attraction to Jason or will the mystery man she thinks is Kade be her priority????Cant wait to read book two.....BOOK TWObook two picks up right where book on ended with Jason bring Rebecca to her house that is being built and guess who the new contractor is???? That's right its Kade and he wants to get together with Rebecca and talk about the last 16years that he has been away. But the funny thing is that Rebecca does not have any of the feelings that she thought she would for Kade, in fact her attractions are leaning towards Jason but she is still having a hard time with the fact that he works for her and the age difference. When Rebecca goes out for a night on the town with her best friend Trisha she is surprised that she has invited Kade, but the night is interrupted when Parker calls Rebecca with a relationship crisis.I think that book three is going to see Parker somehow vie for Rebeccas love as well as Jason and Kade...but who will she chooseBOOK THREEreceived a book form the author for an honest review....The conclusion to Rebecca story was amazing....she finally chooses one of the men who want her, I was really hoping it would be her business partner and best friend Parker, but no such luck. When Rebecca goes to tell the man she did not choose that there is no them, the one she did choose sees it and walks away. Will the relationship be over as its starting???will Rebecca remain alone???

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent!!! By Hurricane Girls Book Blog (1) Baited 1Interesting start! Rebecca is a very successful business woman. Owning her own business with her best friend Parker. She has everything but a love life. She worked so hard on her firm that her love life has taken a back seat. She is struggling with the attraction she has for one of her younger employees Jason but he is way to young. He is 22 and she is 34. That's twelve years. There is no way she is getting involved with a baby and the way she still thinks about Kade.Kade is her best friend from High school. She was totally in Love with him but their relationship was never more then a few kisses. He went off to bigger things and she went her own way. He left her with not even a thought. How could he do that? 16 years she hasn't seen him. He is probably married and with kids but that doesn't stop her from wondering where he is and what he looks like now older. One night at the bar she and parker eating and discussing his marriage. They run into Jason. after a few "moments", She needs out of there before she makes a huge mistake and then she thinks she sees Kade. Was that her imagination or was it really him? or could she have a relationship with Jason? This book is the first in a short story series. It draws you in because the situations are real life issues and the characters you can relate to. I recommend for everyone. excellent book.Baited pt 2Book two picks up right were one left off. Rebecca and Jason are on the way to her house that's being built. She is meeting her new contractor. She thinks about kade and Jason comparing them. She and Jason are in her room and he says so boyfriend or brother? she says oh boyfriend and his lips touch hers and then she hears a voice from her past.. omg Kade he is hear.. Is this really happening? Is he really here? Yes he is the contractor. they talk but he is different older, but looks the same.So does Rebecca chose to be with Kade the blast from the past that she has never forgotten about and broke her heart or does she choose to be with Her Young hot employee that's younger then her?Great Story. Looking for more. This story is just realistic and I am enjoying and recommend for everyone.Baited pt 3Love the ending. what a great short story series. I absolutely loved it.Book 3 picks up with her being torn between two,Kade and Jason. She decides that she wants to explore if Jason and her could really have the relationship she craves. They are heading to another town for a business meeting and he is going with her and she plans to straighten things out with Kade when she returns. On the business trip she decides that she wants to be with Jason. He is the love she has been wanting for 16 years. She meets with Kade but things threaten Her relationship. Jason didn't know she was having dinner with Kade. Will Jason forgive her or Will her heart be once again be Broken?I Denfinitely recommend this Series to everyone. Its a short story that you must read!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. She was in love with him and never told him that she did ... By kathy pardo Rebecca Martin 34 year old successful business woman can't get over her high school crush from sixteen years ago. She was in love with him and never told him that she did as he took off to California to find himself. In the years following, no one could hold up to what Kade was in her eyes. All those years of wanting him and for him to come back and claim his love for her.A young man, Jason, who has worked for Rebecca for a year has been smitten with her, but she doesn't want to date him because he's a little younger then she is.She finally gives in to Jason as they go to her house to meet with a contractor. Jason knows the ins and outs of construction through family and friends and doesn't want to see his boss cheated. In comes a stranger sixteen years later in the form of Kade. He owns part of the construction company and is willing to help her out.Rebecca and Jason leave for a meeting having a steamy night before heading of to the meeting. She finally realizes that she held Kade up so hight on a pedestal and seeing him again, he wasn't the prince she dreamed him to be.Rebecca meets up with Kade to catch up and for him to win her over, but she has fallen for Jason and that is the main reason she's there. She gets up to leave the bar they're at, and Kade kisses her as Jason sees. She tries to run after him to explain things, but he just took offFeeling dejected, Rebecca leaves for her house in the country and sits by her pond in the back yard. She hears a truck pull up and hoping its not Kade. When she hears the voice she turns finding Jason and they talk and see where their relationship will lead.Over all, this series was awesome. I thought that she would get back with her old flame which was disappointing, but she ends up with a new love and a new outlook on life
