I had new cupcakes to bake, a new treasure to hunt, and a new dragon in town — literally. Who wouldn’t be ecstatic filling their days with chocolate, trinket collecting, and martial arts training? Yeah … me. Because no matter how much chocolate I ate, I couldn’t fill the dark pit in my soul. A darkness born from blood alchemy. A darkness that reeked of the black magic I now knew I was capable of creating. Maybe it was time to walk away. But what if there were important things left to do? What if I was the only one who could do what needed to be done? I wasn’t sure I could handle the responsibility, but as long as I had my chocolate stash and a good friend to back me up, I was willing to give it a try.

Meghan, you've taught us to savor chocolate, and we've learned American chocolate is nothing but a waxy substitute. We're eager learners. But the care and savoring you gave to your first two books is slowly fading from the third and the more so from the Oracle book, and is definitely missing here.2) I don't buy the Warner & Jade angle. I don't feel any chemistry when I read any scenes containing either of them. It's like, well, the author is telling us there is chemistry there so I should just buy it. But I don't. I don't "feel" it like I would savor a Valrhona chocolate bar. The only chemistry in this book is between Jade and: Audrey (believe it or not, I am beginning to like her, she is learning), Lara (who doesn't like Lara?), Kandy ('nuff said), Kett (again, 'nuff said) and...Desmond. She hates him for the death of her sister, who caused so many deaths of innocents -- so Jade needs to remove the "log" out of her own eye; and he hates her, for almost killing one of his wolves (that name's a spoiler for this book), yet he is big enough to absolve her. She is high and mighty now, but so prejudiced; he is high and mighty, but willing to reach a compromise. Their relationship is so layered, that going to Warner is just really a cop out, IMHO. Warner doesn't have the "je ne sais quoi" that Desmond does. He's not her equal in "interesting", dynamic or chemistry, that Desmond is.3) Trying to pump out books one after another: I'll still buy the next book, regardless...but there's a thin thread of carelessness here (akin to Charlaine Harris's loss of her direction) that I would hate to see woven into something more. I think this author is on a level with the early Charlaine, with Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, Kim Harrison...and she needs to resist the push of her fans to pump these books out. It's about the story more than anything else, just like it's about the cupcakes.4) Nitpicky on my part: instead of repeating the cupcake combos, ad infinitum, use that incredibly inventive mind and flavor them with words as if the reader was tasting them? We can remember the combos :)5) I wont deny it. I'm firmly in the Jade & Desmond camp. I'll be disappointed if they don't get together because he is her foil. Will it stop me from buying another of her books, or going and reading all of her other books? Not a chance.Dr Chocolate, heal thyself, and savor. Also...the three stars is based on the comparison of this book against its predecessors. If based against the genre at large, and as a stand alone, I would give it 5 stars. (Except I still don't buy Warner. Just giving a guy a gorgeous body and the ability to ogle someone doesn't cut it). Ok, I'm beating that dead horse into the ground. I'm shutting up, finally.

And boy I wish I loved Chocolate like Jade does because it could solve so many issues, right :) And the way she talks about it makes me think it would be so awesome, and I still just can't tolerate the taste of chocolate. And now, it's seriously heated up, because the dragon guardians are sending Jade all over the place on their quests. Except this one, this time, could not only kill Jade but kill them as well. So, the dragons give Jade a map, which is actually skinned tattoo, from a dead guy. LOL Yep I am still creeped out by that. And she is to decipher the map, find whatever it's talking about, and get it to the guardians asap. And all Jade wants is to track down the stupid evil sorcerer and take him out LOL But you see, there's shadows, but just wait till you figure them out. And there's maps, well I kinda spoiled that one for you, but it's just creeptastic! And there's the ancient magic part. You see, things are never easy for Jade. She was broken hearted because of my werewolf, Desmond, who I am still furious at, and she's bored because all she ever does is train with dragons anymore. So she jumps at this adventure. And it comes with a dragon sentinel. And death, which made me cry like an idiot. And Kandy is the most awesomest, coolest, brilliant best friend. I LOVE LOVE HER!! We get to say Hi to Kett for a moment. And now we meet Warner, and I think I am sold!! As much as I love Desmond, I do, but he's lost his shot and that was his own fault. I know why he did what he did, and I even understand it, but no, I don't forget and forgive and neither does Jade!!So, Warner... SWOON :) I can't say anything else, because you should figure him out right along with Jade. I also will say that this one is definitely action packed, full of adventure, major snarky hilarious comments from Kandy and Jade, with Poor Warner left trying to decipher their madness. It's just a wonderful story and these books of this series have become a major favorite and a must have for me!! I get so excited when I find out there is another one on the way soon!! And I will continue to be amazed at the chocolate awesomeness and the fun ways baking is put to the test here ;) 5 MAGICALLY DELICIOUS PAWS!!

I re-read the 1st three books as well as the 1st Oracle book just before reading Shadows. I like where MCD is going with Jade's development and with the over-arching storyline. I was excited to see a new love interest for Jade as McGrowly didn't do it for me as a long-term relationship prospect. As per usual, there is a goodly amount of chocolate, cupcakes, action, shoes and LOL moments.
