For every Pratchett fan, the must-have fully updated guidebook to Discworld!
The Discworld, as everyone knows, is a flat world balanced on the backs of four elephants that, in turn, stand on the shell of the giant star turtle, the Great A'Tuin, as it slowly swims through space.
It is also a global publishing phenomenon, with sales of about eighty-five million books worldwide. The publication of Snuff brought the Discworld canon to thirty-nine books—not including the various guides, maps, diaries, and other side projects. That's a lot of Discworld to keep track of—more than most people can manage with just one head—but fear not: help is at hand!
If you're looking for the ultimate authority on probably the most heavily populated—certainly the most hilarious—setting in fantasy literature . . .
If you need a handy guide to Discworld locales from Ankh-Morpork to Zemphis . . .
If you want help telling Achmed the Mad from Jack Zweiblumen . . . If your life depends on being able to distinguish the Agatean Empire from the Zoons . . .
Look no further than Turtle Recall: The Discworld Companion . . . So Far—now fully updated and completely up to Snuff!

Review “…[SNUFF is a] lively outing, complete with sly shout-outs to Jane Austen and gritty police procedurals.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Brilliantly complex.” (The Straits Times)“The humor is sharp and the characters are charming, and the plight of the goblins creates moments of genuine pathos that are the highlight of the book.” (Tor.com)“In short, this is as busy and as daft as any other Discworld yarn, which means it is the quintessence of daft. Nobody writes fantasy funnier than Pratchett.” (Booklist)

I ordered it, read it and have never looked back. Through some 40 Discworld books, a dozen or more diaries like the Discworld Thieves' Guild Yearbook & Diary 2002, various maps like A Tourist Guide to Lancre: A Discworld Mapp (Discworld Series), very bad cookbooks like Nanny Ogg's Cookbook: A Useful and Improving Almanack of Information Including Astonishing Recipes from Terry Pratchett's Discworld (Discworld Series) and more, I've bought them all. Including two earlier editions of the Discworld Companion. I have sagging shelves of Pratchettania. So why buy Turtle Recall? Well, apart from the wonderfully dreadful pun in the title, this collection brings your Discworld trivia up to Snuff, the latest Discworld novel. And its restores a number of characters and places that had been dropped from the earlier editions for lack of space. And there is a spiffy detailed map to downtown Ankh-Morpork, the largest city on the Discworld. Pratchett contributed to many of the entries, and his trademark humor, word play and even footnotes are present. The usual warnings apply. This is a book for Discworld fans. I don't think you have to be a convention-attending, costume-waring hopeless fan to qualify. But it's really only useful to folks who have read many of the Discworld novels. And for any fan, you can lose a lot of time, chasing through linked references, and being led to re-reads of novels you had nearly forgotten.Terrific fun for the fan, and a masterful collection.

I read the books, own many of them, but I do not compile endless lists of trivia from them. Briggs does, so I'll use his. This edition of the Companion purports to reinstate material on various walk-on, "bit-part" characters that was excised from the second edition. Other than that snippet from the Author's introduction I have little knowledge and zero feelings about the inclusion or exclusion of such material. The entries I've cherry-picked seem accurate and well written in an informative and concise manner. Were I to have any complaint it is that since I have no Latin to speak of I wish the Latin Mottoes included in the entries for various guilds and organizations had been translated into English. A trivial matter.Certain material may be controversial since the canonical sources may be contradictory due to the evolving nature of the author's vision of the world and the people who run about on it doing all sorts of things that invalidate its warranty. There's a map in the first couple of pages that will infuriate the "Can't Be Mapped" crowd. Also: written by Briggs & Pratchett the same team who brought you Ye Mapps. Don't buy this book if any of those facts will make you wish you hadn't bought this book after you have, in fact, bought this book. The book is a hardbound book with a stitched binding, dimensioned to match the hardbound Discworld books you may (or may not) have on your shelves (not the oversized ones like "The Last Hero", the regular books like "Small Gods"). There's a dust-jacket featuring the art depicted in the photograph. Since I can't read Amazon's listings properly and was expecting a paperback as a result, this was all a small surprise.I plan on using Turtle Recall as an encyclopedia for an upcoming (and likely never to be realized) role-playing game set on the disc that I have been longing to play since I acquired a copy of Discworld (HC). Other than the fact that it is far too nice to be lobbed onto a table of drooling RPG nerds it is eminently fit for purpose.Recommended for those with similar needs, or those who just like to delve into Disc trivia, or those who feel this sort of book shouldn't be written and enjoy being enraged by the fact that it was.Other Discworld Stuff of Possible InterestThe Compleat Ankh-Morpork: City Guide - A gazetteer of the businesses of the great city similar to those that one could find for all cities before the yellow pages and internet wiped them away. Classifieds keyed to a map.Discworld (HC) - A roleplaying game set on the Disc. Beautiful artwork and lots of potential fun if you can find someone to run it for you (not me, I wanna PLAY)Discworld: Ankh-Morpork - A board game of some drollery. More fun than a night in the Mended Drum. The Discworld Mapp - The Big Picture. Really big.

The Universe According to Pratchett By Kindle Customer Have the entire Disc-World series in hardcover, to get them away from me, you'd have to pry them from my cold, dead fingers. This book makes a lovely companion to the series. Full of extra information, and the full cast of characters.
