As if reading their collective minds, I had a fleeting prognostication of my immediate future: an image of the seven men dragging me into the school yard. Then having their way with me. Then leaving me for dead.A good thing the future isn’t written in stone.I smiled at them. “Hello, boys.”* * *I could smell alcohol on their breaths and sweat on their skin. The sweat was pungent and laced with everything from fear and excitement, to hostility and sexual frustration. None of it smelled good. If mean had a scent, this would be it.A smallish Latino stepped forward. A switchblade sprang open at his side, locked into place. For my benefit, he let the faint light of the moon gleam off its polished surface. He was perhaps thirty-five and wore long denim shorts and a plaid shirt. I turned, punched, extending my arm straight from my body. Jacky would have been proud. My fist caught the guy in the throat. He flopped down, gagging and holding his neck. Probably hurt like hell. I didn’t care.I surveyed the others, who had all stopped in their tracks. “So what was the plan, boys? You were all going to get a fuck in? The very definition of sloppy seconds—hell, sloppy thirds and fourths and fifths. Then what? Slit my throat? Leave me for dead? Let some school janitor find me stuffed in a dumpster? You would deny my children their mother for one night of cheap thrills?”No one said anything. They looked toward their leader, the slick Latino with the switch. Most likely not all of them spoke English.“I’ll give you once chance to run,” I said. “Before I kill all of you.”

A surprsingly great book By AHA64 I have never heard of this publisher, and a quick search didn't show a web presence, so I was leery about buying this book given the amount of poorly edited, terrible stories I've read by innocently purchasing 'self published' Kindle books.I am so, so glad I decided to give this author a go. This is definitely the gem among the chaff.This book is GREAT. Very 'human', if a story about a vampire can be human. Angst, foibles, the-world-is-still-screwed-up even though (and sometimes because) the protagonist is a vampire. Readers who like Charlaine Harris' OTHER series (not the one made into a TV series, but her other work) will adore this heroine. Feisty, confused and doing her damnedest to make the best of a horrible situation.The only thing I didn't like was a too neatly tied up plot line (had to do with the vamp who turned her).I hope the writer continues the story line in future books. I will definitely be keeping an eye out!

I have my favorite authors in the genre and honestly wasn't looking for anymore. It seems that authors don't want to write about normal people anymore. The stories all seem to have vampires, witches, wizards, and zombies in them. I was looking for an author that wrote normal stories not paranormal. Spies, police officers, detectives, these were the heroes that I was looking for.I first ran across J.R. Rain's work on myspace. I had a friend request waiting in my inbox. I accepted and went to look up his work. Wow, what an impressive list of reviewers, what could my thoughts possibly mean after so many great authors have said such positive things about his work.While I was debating which book to start with for our book club I got the opportunity to read Moon Dance. I have never been overly impressed with first person fiction, with a few notable exceptions. Maybe, because I never felt like I could become the character.Right there Mr.Rain's story had two strikes against it. Strike One - Main character is a vampire (paranormal). Ball One - Detective. Strike Two - First Person narration. The count was 2-1 and I was waiting for that third strike to fly directly over the plate and pound into the catchers mitt, instead Mr. Rain's story connected directly with the ball (my mind) and knocked it out of the park.Mr. Rain managed to make me fall so far into the character that I couldn't put the story down once I started reading.

It was one of the worst pieces of writing I have ever encountered. I mean truly, embarrassingly bad. Not only was there no character development, no conflict, no emotion, but the characters were so broad and clichéd, they could have been written by a grade-schooler. I fact, as a teacher, I would flunk a kid if they showed me this. Yes, we know all cops like donuts, but can you think of anything else cops like that hasn't been said a thousand times? You say men like big breasts? Shocking! It can't be true! The lack of imagination boggles the mind.I also have to assume that the author is male because this is an insultingly bad attempt at the female perspective. There was not one element of Samantha Moon that felt true. This is a character who is supposedly going through a terrible crisis and is distracted by a bartender's "buns". Yes, buns. And no, it's not set in Akron, Ohio, circa 1988. This is a character that thinks "down girl" to herself (over and over), because she can barely resist the "hunky-ness" of every man she meets, including the old cop with a "real man's" belly. In fact, all the men are "real men", except for the cop's embarrassingly gay son. Ugh. Just ugh.The best thing I can say about this book is that there were fewer typos than I would have expected.
