(I also did a bit of proofreading and caught some minor glitches, which should be gone when the book is released on March 2nd, 2015.)I'm a huge fan of Susan Kaye Quinn's writing, and I've been eagerly awaiting this book, to see what she would do with the concept of the singularity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity). She approached it from the opposite direction than I thought she would go: humans using advanced tech to become hyper-advanced androids with all their memories from when they were mere humans intact, rather than artificial intelligences advancing up to and then far beyond human capacity.The plot and setting of the book invites comparisons to Hunger Games and Divergent, as other reviewers have already noted. It comes off well in those comparisons; the dystopian aspects of life for the legacy humans is not as grim or brutal as in the other two books (what ills the humans suffer are more from benign neglect than from any malice), and the competitions are solo performances in the arts, not to-the-death combats in an arena. The actual moments of competition are downplayed in Legacy Human. This is a good thing for the many people who find the trope of teens being forced to slaughter each other disturbing. Face it, that should disturb us. Kudos to Quinn for creating a competition with life-or-death stakes which doesn't involve slaughter.But for my money, the better comparison is to Gulliver's Travels, or to The Matrix (before the sequels ruined it). Because like those two works, it's a story that can be read on two levels.There's the level of the basic story: the plot, the characters, their relationships, the setting, the back story, the high tech props--and all of these are top-notch. There are no flat characters in this book. The plot is gripping and exciting. The history leading up to the events in the book is fascinating. The book is a solid, excellent read on this level. See the reviews reneth and Catherine for examples of thoroughly loving the book on this level. That's great! The book really clicks on this level.Then in addition to this level, there is the philosophical, metaphysical level. Daniel Arthur Smith and W. Swardstrom picked up on that, and expounded on it in their reviews. This book raises some deep philosophical questions, some of which have been around as long as there have been philosophers (that is, as long as humans have existed), and others which are only now becoming urgent. One of the oldest expressions of the central question of this book is stated in Psalm 8:4: "What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you visit him?" The psalmist asks this of God, but Eli and the other legacy humans ask it of the ascenders. And the ascenders, some of them, are anxious to know the answer to that as well. Swardstrom nailed the questions: "What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to have a soul? Can a machine possess a soul?"It is a profound virtue of the book that Quinn does not spoon-feed any answers to these questions to the reader. They are important to the theme of the book, but the reader is free to seek to answer them or to ignore them. If you choose to wrestle with the questions, the characters in the book will give you several points of view to consider. I hope this book will spark thoughtful discussions about what human nature is, and where we are going in our headlong rush to make thinking machines in our image. And especially what it could mean for all of us when and if our creations transcend our nature and become godlike.Because this book also makes it clear that having godlike power and virtually endless existence while still having all-too-human moral failings is not a recipe for utopia.Highly recommended for all readers who enjoy great science fiction, but especially for those who want their science fiction to provoke serious thought.

But their relationship is not the traditional Artist/Patron... because Lenora isn't human, and Eli is a Legacy trapped in a world where he must serve to live.When the Singularity happened and most humans ascended to become something greater, a number of creative and religious types chose to remain human. Now, their descendents are forced to remain human, Legacies to keep the arts alive. But Legacies aren't just denied to chance to ascend; they are also denied technology and advanced medical care, forced to live on the bare minimum. When Eli's talent is brought to the attention of one of the Ascended, Lenora, she becomes his patron, buying him art supplies and encouraging him to expand his talent. With a dying mother to take care of, Eli wants more... he wants to ascend, knowing this is his only way to gain the technology to heal his mother.THE LEGACY HUMAN is a fun new take on a dystopian world, especially knowing that the Legacies are the way they are because their own ancestors had the chance to ascend - to become greater - and turned it down. While reading this story, a question ran through my mind: Are the ascended really greater, or are the humans with their creative spark the true elite? The ascended go through their daily lives bettering themselves without really caring about these humans who they are supposed to be nurturing, leaving them without the basic resources to survive. The Olympics - held on a yearly basis - give the humans the hope to ascend, knowing that four talented youngsters will be chosen and given a chance to be "better" than their peers.This author has always been great at giving us well-developed characters who allow us to experience the story through their adventures. Eli and his friend Cyrus allow us to see the world through their eyes, and it's great to watch Eli grow past his upbringing and expectations, viewing the world as it really is rather than what he has been told his entire life. Kamali, Basha, and Delphina give an emotional connection for Eli and Cyrus beyond themselves and Eli's mother, and help further the story by sharing a different viewpoint as Legacies. Marcus and Lorena are two of the ascended, and are the extreme opposites of each other - one kind and generous, the other tricky and arrogant. While the plot of THE LEGACY HUMAN seems to follow a well-established precedent - the disenfranchised people versus those with power and money, some sort of school or challenge to give the downtrodden hope, and a main character who breaks free of expectations - Susan Kaye Quinn manages to make the story seem fresh with the unexpected "flaws" of Eli and his challenge to move beyond them even when he knows that he is swimming through corruption.If you enjoy alternate-future novels or dystopian storylines, I would highly recommend THE LEGACY HUMAN by Susan Kaye Quinn.NOTE: I received a free digital ARC of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I can't possibly recommend this book enough!The first description that I heard of this book was that it was about a boy who wanted to become a robot. Based on that description alone, I figured it could be interesting, but I couldn't really fathom how a whole book could spiral out from that. Susan describes it as a "reverse Pinnochio story", but even that really is simplifying it too much. This story is so complex and detailed, that I simply fell into it! It is a massive story, that can't be told all at once. There were occasions throughout the book where I just stopped to take it all in, and thought to myself "Susan thought of everything." She brought real life to Eli, so that I felt like losing his humanity would be a true loss. I agonized over his choices as much as the characters did!As much as the story is science-fiction, it fits snugly into several other genres as well. There are moments of spirituality, and moments of mystery. Fans of Dystopians will also be won over, by a story of both devastation and hope in a future world, where transcending humanity may not be all it's cut out to be. I am beyond excited for the rest of this series, and hope I don't have to wait too long for book 2!It takes a lot for an author to win my undying devotion, my complete faith as a reader, but Susan Kaye Quinn can most definitely count herself among them. She just keeps delivering the highest quality of stories. Seriously.
