0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Frightening By Charles van Buren Gold was the editor and founder of GALAXY SCIENCE FICTION from 1950 to 1961. He also co-edited other magazines and wrote for DC Comics during WW2. This story was published in the April-May 1953 issue of AMAZING STORIES science fiction magazine. Gold was known for his fresh approach to science fiction. I don't know if you would call this story fresh but it is certainly very different and to me, a horror story. It is well written but the attitudes expressed and the premise show us a future which, undoubtedly, would eventually lead to the worse despotism in human history. And you would be happy about it. If not, the authorities could make you be happy. The people who have been altered in this story show us what humanity could look like if God had not given us free will, if he made us "be good." Perhaps Gold wrote it as warning. This review is from the free Kindle e-book published March 17, 2011.
