It's not my usual genre, but I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who likes fiction or fantasy of any sort. It flows well and I did not often find myself slipping out of the "reading zone." There are layers to the story and characters and it can be appreciated on more than one level. Each chapter/section covers a different smaller adventure within a larger continuous story, and these served a similar function as the short stories I usually read during my commute to work. Like the previous reviewer, I can also imagine sharing this book aloud with an older child and using the stories as a jumping-off point for some good discussions.

It is a charming book that moves from one fairly tale moment to another resulting in a greater, more satisfying, story. The book felt sweet, wistful, and innocent. I read this the span of several hours and enjoyed it from beginning to end.Regarding my rating... The book came to my attention through the author's father. I am a reader, generally going through 3-5 fantasy / science fiction books a week. Like movies, I re-read books I like and I don't finish books that don't capture my attention. A 4 star means I enjoyed it, I will probably re-read it again at a later date, and some of my friends may enjoy it as well.

As a collection and reworking of classic Russian fairy tales interwoven with other tales, but tied together with a first person narrative of a long-lived feygirl, this is quite a readable and enjoyable book. The voice is good and you have a strong sense for the character and how she thinks about herself and those around her. It's interesting to listen to her change her opinion about those she comes across, and learn to be more true to herself. Vasilisa the Beautiful and Vasilisa the Brave have been written, filmed, and retold many times and hold strong similarities with Cinderella - this retelling draws in some of the older less popular Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson tales. This version of Baba Yaga is definitely the scare-the-children-into-doing-their-chores version, not the more matter-of-fact, fair and firm version.I did not read this in all one sitting, although I suspect I might have been able to. There were easy breaking points, although at least twice I did pick up the book again to know what happened next (especially near the end). For all that, I find that I truly enjoyed this author for her writing very much, and look forward to other work she might put out!A few comments on the publishing method, which I have NOT deducted points/stars for, but which did bother me as a lover of physical books:I read the paper edition, rather than the Kindle edition. Because this appeared to be a Kindle-to-Print version, there were some oddities. The lack of table of contents and page numbers was the most noticeable although the lack of title page, art accreditation (I'd love to know who created the cover art - if it was Ms Weaver or someone else) and various other typical publication items were also a bit discomfiting. It will be challenging for librarians (should they ever be gifted with a copy) to properly catalog and store this book.In some ways, the lack of page numbers was more immediately inconvenient. I typically do not use bookmarks, but instead remember what page or chapter number I stopped at. As this book has neither, I did have to resort to scraps of paper.
