"…algorithms are presented in detail and insights on their operation are discussed in a clear manner, making the book very useful to people that are interested in the algorithmic aspects and are willing to skip the technical analysis. As such, the book is useful to advances undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to practicing engineers and scientists, and to researchers." - Leonidas Georgiadis, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
"I think this book distinguishes itself very well in the way it first approaches and then dives into the topic of congestion control.... There is a whole range of algorithms and traffic domains and trying to make sense of so many areas in a coherent manner is a daunting task. The book approaches this challenge in a top down fashion which works out very well in the end....All the content is there that is needed to make anyone interested a reasonable expert in the area." -Ashish Gupta, Senior Software Engineer, Google Inc.
About the Author Subir has over twenty years of experience in the technology industry, during which he has held leadership positions for large companies such as IBM and Sprint, as well several Silicon Valley based start-ups. At IBM he was part of the design team for IBM’s next generation broadband architecture and his contribution to improving the performance of IBM’s host based protocol stack led to an IBM Outstanding Innovation Award. He served as Director of Systems Architecture at Cable Modem pioneer Hybrid Networks where his design for the Medium Access Control protocol enabled the company to establish an early lead in the MMDS metro area wireless space. While at Hybrid, he also took part in the drafting of the DOCSIS Cable Model specification. He was the co-founder and CTO/VP of Engineering at Aperto Networks, a pioneer in the Broadband Wireless space, where he was the Chief Designer of its Packetwave line of products. His work at Aperto led to the creation of the industry’s leading wireless access system, that was 5+ years ahead of the rest of the competition. Subsequently through his chairing of the IEEE 802.16 MAC standards group, this design had a big influence on the WiMAX specification, which in turn influenced the design of LTE, which is the leading cellular wireless protocol in use today. Most recently Subir was part of the Office of the CTO at Tellabs where he led the company's architectural efforts in the area of broadband wireless gateways. Among the projects that he contributed to, included a design for an LTE-WiFi Gateway and a Software Define Networking based architecture for the LTE packet core.Subir holds 45 patents which along with his other publications, have been cited over 800 times. His most cited works are in the areas of Congestion Control, Packet Scheduling/BW Management, Mobility and Medium Access Control. His graduate work on Fork-Join and Re-sequencing queueing systems has found recent applications in the areas of RAID systems, vertical search engines and parallel databases. Subir holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park and a B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur, India.

Congestion control of information traffic has been a very important issue since the early developments of the Internet. The algorithms implemented originally needed updates or replacement as the line speeds kept increasing at a very fast pace, new transmission media were introduce and new applications with varying demands were developed. As a result, a lot of research has been devoted to the problem of Internet congestion control and this research is still going on and expanding. Moreover, a large number of theoretical results, design techniques and algorithms for congestion control have been proposed and implemented, making it challenging to keep track of the evolution of the topic and to see the big picture. The current book addresses this challenge. Starting with the early developments, it proceeds methodically to more complex algorithms covering the most recent approaches. A framework for the necessary analysis is developed and applied in order to get a deeper understanding and insight on the subject. While the required mathematical background for understanding the analysis (calculus, optimization, control and probability theory) should be accessible to intermediate undergraduate students in engineering and mathematics, some maturity is assumed on the part of the reader in order to assimilate the subject. However, the algorithms are presented in detail and insights on their operation are discussed in a clear manner, making the book very useful to people that are interested in the algorithmic aspects and are willing to skip the technical analysis. As such, the book is useful to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to practicing engineers and scientists, and to researchers.

A well-written and in-depth guide to an important topic By Engineer at Heart I think this book distinguishes itself very well in the way it first approaches and then dives into the topic of congestion control. Most books tend to be either too dry and analytical for practicing engineers or students or are too high level to be useful to researchers to get an in-depth understanding and help them advance the start of the art. This book somehow manages to address both of these issues, which is a somewhat difficult thing to do with a subject like congestion control. There is a whole range of algorithms and traffic domains and trying to make sense of so many areas in a coherent manner is a daunting task. The book approaches this challenge in a top down fashion which works out very well in the end. It is divided into two parts, with the first part laying the foundations of congestion control, starting with the original motivations and the algorithms that started it all, and then diving into the optimization theory and control theory required to fully illustrate the working of the algorithms and also provide the tools that serve as the basis for understanding the newer algorithms in congestion control. This chapters also helps in laying the analytical foundation for researchers interested in devising new algorithms or network designs in different settings. The second part then talks about five different domains, all of which I found to be very relevant in this decade. They include Data Center networks, Mobile wireless networks, high speed video transmissions and ethernet networks which are now widely used in Storage Area Networks so this becomes an important topic there. All of this is very well presented, starting at a high level and then diving very deep to uncover the underpinnings and the mathematical thinking behind the algorithms in that domain. The best thing thing about this approach is that it can be adapted to the reader’s level very easily. Students may skip the more rigorous parts if so interested, while researchers can benefit from all the analytical theory to aid in their own research and get a deep survey of the field. I feel the author has put special effort in ensuring this style as it can be hard to balance these two approaches. The book could have stopped here - but what I really liked was the coverage of the cutting edge in congestion control theory, including using Machine Learning to automatically learn the best settings for a new network which tend to be superior than most human designed algorithms. It also provides an overview of Software Designed Networks, which have become an important part of the network design fabric today.Overall, I am very pleased that this book has come out in the very crucial yet sometimes hard to understand topic of congestion control. All the content is there that is need to make anyone interested a reasonable expert in the area. However the book goes above and beyond by taking a lot of care in explaining this in a way so that its accessible to a wide range of audience, not an easy feat by any means.
