The Confessions of Arsène Lupin (Arséne Lupin), by Maurice Leblanc

Review “[Arsène Lupin] has taken his place in public estimation with Sherlock Holmes and other universally admired heroes of fictional crime.” —The New York Times“The Cyrano of the underworld.” —Jean-Paul Sartre

About the Author Maurice Leblanc (1864–1941) was best known for his tales featuring the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. Born in Rouen, France, Leblanc was inspired by the success of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories and invented Lupin as a French adversary for the great detective. Lupin appeared in dozens of novels and short stories and was the basis for several films. Of his great antihero, Leblanc once said, “Lupin follows me everywhere. He is not my shadow. I am his shadow.”

The previous books were all book length series but this time the book is composed of short stories a single chapter long. Each story is self contained mystery for Lupin to solve. The character feels more like a detective like Sherlock Holmes or genius like Prof. Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen. This may be my favorite Lupin collection yet. Some of the longer novels could get quite complicated with all the intrigue and it wasn't uncommon for me to get lost. I like these bite sized stories and some of them could get quite riveting for instance The Infernal Trap where Lupin is bound tightly to a bed and death seems inevitable.

It is a series of stories that are a combination of mystery and farce, with the stereotypical police force that is almost competent. The protagonist, Arsene Lupin, is not the super competent detective but the criminal. No complicated plots, no graphic violence. A good, easy read.

What I enjoy is the description of the usage of then new technology like telegraph, electricity, cars. And the wonderfully old-fashioned view of things. Its entertaining, phantastic, and a little lesson in history.
