We had barely imagined getting of Earth at this time and these are stories written at roughly the same time a the Mars Chronicles by Burroughs. The modern reader is going to have some good giggles in the process of reading this, but it is hard fictional space opera of the time. For those familiar with Star Trek Voyager, this is excellent and better written base material for a Black and white sci-fi holo novel.

This is an excellent story, though obviously old By John WilliamsSon 2100 This is an excellent story, though obviously old, but be aware that this is a short story that was originally published in a pulp magazine. It appears as one section of "Doc" Smith's later book, Subspace Explorers and its sequel, which I also highly recommend.

It's interesting to see the kinds of approaches taken to future technology by an author in the world of vacuum tubes where the concepts of "rays" were the hot item of the day.

"Quest" is book #2 in the Systemic series. The “Su flu” virus swept its way around the globe in a matter of weeks, decimating the world’s population and laying waste to modern civilization. Surviving the flu was just the beginning of the struggle for John Stevens and his family. After a vicious and unprovoked attack by rogue mercenaries forced them to abandon their camp deep within the forests of southern Illinois, they find themselves thrust in a vastly different world from the one they once knew. Now John and his group must struggle not only to find a place to call home, but learn how to survive in a landscape that no longer knows the comforts of modern amenities. Life has been reset to the 1800s, and John must quickly adapt in order to lead and protect his family in this challenging new environment. But not everyone who survived the flu is content to keep to themselves, and as John and his family will soon discover, outsiders are watching…waiting…and wanting what they have.

The hope that, in a few weeks, their lives would return to the civilized world they'd always known has died. Now they just want to find a place where they'll feel safe, where their children can be safe. They think they've found it when they find the stone house in Tennessee, or have they? The Systemic Series is incredible. The author has a true gift for creating characters with real dimensions. The stories are filled with surprises and great survival tip. That's not to say that the leader, John, doesn't make some tremendously stupid moves, but that just makes him real. I'm now up to book #4 and completely hooked. I'll hate when the series is over.

You feel as if you are there! I read book two in one day and I am so happy I have book three, four and five ready to resume their struggles and accomplishments. The description of the castle was so good. I could visualize it! I recommend this series wholeheartedly. Just don't have any plans or a to-do list cause you are not going to want to put the book down.

The definitive story of American health care today—its causes, consequences, and confusionsIn March 2010, the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. It was the most extensive reform of America’s health care system since at least the creation of Medicare in 1965, and maybe ever. The ACA was controversial and highly political, and the law faced legal challenges reaching all the way to the Supreme Court; it even precipitated a government shutdown. It was a signature piece of legislation for President Obama’s first term, and also a ball and chain for his second.Ezekiel J. Emanuel, a professor of medical ethics and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania who also served as a special adviser to the White House on health care reform, has written a brilliant diagnostic explanation of why health care in America has become such a divisive social issue, how money and medicine have their own—quite distinct—American story, and why reform has bedeviled presidents of the left and right for more than one hundred years.Emanuel also explains exactly how the ACA reforms are reshaping the health care system now. He forecasts the future, identifying six mega trends in health that will determine the market for health care to 2020 and beyond. His predictions are bold, provocative, and uniquely well-informed. Health care—one of America’s largest employment sectors, with an economy the size of the GDP of France—has never had a more comprehensive or authoritative interpreter.

Reinventing American Health Care: How the Affordable Care Act will Improve our Terribly Complex, Blatantly Unjust, Outrageously Expensive, Grossly Inefficient, Error Prone System, by Ezekiel J. Emanuel

From Booklist In this unabashedly pro-Obama-care book, prominent bioethicist Emanuel makes a convincing, albeit one-sided, case for overhauling what he sees as an unfair health system in the U.S. Deftly using numbers to make his arguments, Emanuel organizes his book into three parts: the current system (largely its financing), health-care reform (the nearly 1,000-page Affordable Care Act ACA and legal challenges to it), and the future (lots of hospital closings). Today more money goes to the 4,985 acute-care hospitals ($970 billion in 2012) than all of Social Security ($730 billion) or national defense ($650 billion). And before ACA, nearly 50 million Americans, including 12 million undocumented aliens, lacked insurance. He also touches on important history (the creation of Medicare in 1965) and clearly explains complicated issues. For example, he uses a menu-pricing analogy to explain bundled payments: “If fee-for-service is ordering à la carte, bundled payment is prix fixe.” A plain-English explanation of a tricky topic. --Karen Springen

Review “For Americans poisoned by nefarious medical insurance companies and a G.O.P. dying to gut Obamacare, I prescribe Ezekiel Emanuel’s Reinventing American Health Care (PublicAffairs) to clarify how the Affordable Care Act can rehabilitate our nauseatingly unjust, grossly expensive, and senselessly complicated health-care system. My personal recommendation? Lay off the toxic propaganda.”—Vanity Fair“Whether you agree with his conclusions or not, they’re well argued, and he has marshaled an impressive amount of information.”—Washington Post“Infused with diagrams, charts, and tables, this book is informative, thought-provoking, and immensely important. Given his role in the program, and as is reflected in the subtitle of the book, Emanuel clearly wants to persuade, but he also wants to explain. And because he was an insider — and proves himself a gifted writer — he makes an able guide to the complexities of the landmark legislation… Clearly, if Obamacare is to fulfill its promise there will need to be significant changes and that will require collaboration among citizens, health care professionals, scholars, and lawmakers from across the political spectrum. And the only way this can happen is if people understand what exactly is at stake. ‘Reinventing American Health Care’ spells this out clearly, and by doing so, lays the foundation for this kind of collaboration to occur.”—Dennis Rosen, Boston Globe“With this book, Zeke Emanuel has done the country an immense service. He does the impossible—explain the dysfunctional American health care system—and then takes it one better. For here he also makes the hard-eyed case for understanding that the passage of health reform—of Obamacare—has set us on a path for a health system that works. Our system has left millions without needed care, bankrupt, or both, and tied the fate of their health to where they work. This book explains how we got in this fix, how we will get out of it—and even more boldly, when. If you wanted to read one book to understand health care, this is the one you want.” —Atul Gawande, surgeon, staff writer for The New Yorker, and author of The Checklist Manifesto“There are thoughtful doctors, savvy policy makers and profound scholars of morality. Zeke Emanuel is the only person in America who is all three. That makes him the right person to write the definitive primer on health care in America. It should be read by anyone who wants to understand what may be the most important set of domestic issues facing America.” —Lawrence H. Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, & President Emeritus and Charles W. Eliot University Professor of Harvard University“Zeke Emanuel has written a book that tells people interested health care policy what they need to know but all too often do not. He brings together a staggering variety of information, never before available in one place, on economics, medicine, legislative history, governmental operations, politics, and the gory, boring, and surpassingly important issue of implementation. No single book can tell one all one needs to know about the most complex health care system in the world, but this one comes very close indeed.” —Henry J. Aaron, the Bruce and Virginia MacLaury Senior Fellow in the Economic Studies program at the Brookings Institution“The author, who serves as a special White House adviser on health care reform, is optimistic that its glitches will be resolved within the year and that it will transform how patients are cared for over the coming decades…He offers an insider’s account of some of the infighting that occurred within the Obama administration…The author takes a long view of the reforms beginning with incentives and penalties for the adoption of uniform electronic health records in the 2009 Recovery Act…An important challenge to the naysayers on both sides of the political divide.”–Kirkus Reviews“Prominent bioethicist Emanuel makes a convincing, albeit onesided, case for overhauling what he sees as an unfair health system in the U.S. Deftly using numbers to make his arguments, Emanuel organizes his book into three parts: the current system (largely its financing), health-care reform (the nearly 1,000-page Affordable Care Act [ACA] and legal challenges to it), and the future (lots of hospital closings) …He also touches on important history (the creation of Medicare in 1965) and clearly explains complicated issues…A plain-English explanation of a tricky topic.”–Booklist“Few people have had a more favorable influence on the shaping of the current processes of health care reform than Zeke Emanuel has. And no one is a better, clearer, or wiser interpreter of the insanely complex non-system that we are trying to fix. This book is an instant classic—mandatory reading for anyone who wants to know how we got where we are in American health care and where we need to go.” —Donald M. Berwick, MD, MPP, president emeritus and senior fellowat the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and former administratorof the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services“Reinventing American Health Care is an informed and informative book and likely to be just as controversial as Zeke Emanuel was during his tenure in the Obama administration.”—Gail Wilensky, senior fellow at Project HOPE and former deputy assistant to President George H. W. Bush for policy development“Emanuel provides an entertaining and informative mix of history, fact, argument, and speculation. His book’s subtitle to the contrary, it is not simply a defense of the ACA. Emanuel does a superb job of describing the history of health care in the United States, the complexities involved with it, and the various attempts that have been made to reform it. And while he is a defender of the ACA, he is also honest about the difficulties the law has faced during implementation…This is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding one of the most pressing issues of American politics today and in the future." — Health Affairs

By Philip Lederer Ezekiel Emanuel just published an important book with a great title, "Reinventing American Health Care: How the Affordable Care Act Will Improve Our Terribly Complex, Blatantly Unjust, Outrageously Expensive, Grossly Inefficient, Error Prone System." In it, he describes the history of health care reform in the US, gives an overview of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and speculates about future trends in American health care. The concluding chapter of Emanuel's book is entitled, "Six Megatrends in Health Care: The Long-Term Impact of the ACA." I will devote this review to discussing his six "megatrends."Megatrend 1) The End of Insurance Companies as We Know ThemEmanuel argues that health insurance companies will "shift their business to focus on offering services they have expertise in, particularly analytics, actuarial modeling, risk management, and other management services...." or "transform themselves into integrated delivery systems," or they will go out of business. This seems quite plausible. However, I think it will depend on how the ACA implementation goes over the next several years. If insurance companies raise their rates, there could be major political fallout.Megatrend 2) VIP Care for the Chronically and Mentally IllEmanuel argues that "tertiary prevention" for chronically ill people with diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc, and mental health care for people with depression/anxiety, will become an increasing focus of our health care system. I agree. I've taken care of many patients with chronic diseases and mental illness who cycle in and out of the hospital. The question is if our fragmented health system can provide coordinated, community-based care for these vulnerable people. Doctors and nurses must learn to use a biosocial approach when taking care of marginalized patients with chronic disease and mental illness.Megatrend 3) The Emergence of Digital Medicine and the Closing of HospitalsEmanuel writes: "Digital medicine will allow physicians to monitor patients remotely anywhere they are, get labs and many imaging tests done, and perform interventions once done exclusively in the hospital." I agree - sort of. We are rapidly headed into a digital era. More health care will be provided in the community, and digital devices will continue to proliferate. But will these digital devices provide value for money? Or will the hype outpace their effectiveness? Unfortunately, so far, the hype is winning.Megatrend 4) The End of Employer-Sponsored InsuranceThis controversial megatrend was analyzed in yesterday's front-page New York Times article. I think this megatrend is very difficult to predict. It depends on a number of political and economic factors. Will America's health insurance system remain constant, or will it move 1) towards a Republican system based on tax credits, or 2) towards a single payer system based on universal health coverage, or 3) a Kaiser-like group model? The latter is the most likely.Megatrend 5) The End of Health Care InflationI'm definitely not an economist, but I'm not sure I agree with Emmanuel that the ACA will succeed at controlling the growth in health care costs. In his book, Emanuel admits that the ACA didn't go far enough on payment reform, and that there remains "a serious misalignment between what we want physicians and hospitals to do in terms of improving value, efficiency, and reducing unnecessary care and how insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid, and others pay them." As long as our fee-for-service system is around, and Medicare payments and RVUs are biased towards specialists, the growth of health care costs won't be controlled.Megatrend 6) The Transformation of Medical SchoolsI agree with Emanuel. Medical schools must change, and become much more team-oriented, community health oriented, and digital medicine oriented. The problem is that medical school curricula are very difficult to change. Can they begin to change rapidly? I'm not sure. If they can, it will require a major awakening of medical students and faculty. With the enormous amount of material for physicians to learn, does reducing the length of medical school from 4 years to 3 years really make sense? I don't think so. I think it would be preferable to keep medical school at 4 years and subsidize medical school tuition, or provide 100% debt forgiveness for medical students who enter primary care careers. The National Health Service Corps is a good program, but it doesn't go nearly far enough. If medical school is reduced to 3 years, will the training physicians receive really be sufficient?

An Excellent Presentation on American Health Care By Randolph Eck Ezekiel Emanuel has written a very interesting book about the U.S. health care system. In the introduction, he tries to make sense of how three individuals were affected by this system. He then proceeds to get into the nitty-gritty of the American health care system beginning with it roots. The book is divided into three parts. In Part I we review the history of the American health care system, in Part II we explore the efforts to reform the system, and finally, in part III, we gaze into the crystal ball of the future. In the first part, he provides us with a brief history of healthcare in the U.S. It was interesting to learn how the employer-base system came to predominate in society. In the rest of the section we get a very detailed description of how healthcare is financed, who the providers are, how Americans get their healthcare, and interestingly, how this all works together to give us our current healthcare system. We are provided with many tables, charts, and diagrams, which provide some interesting statistics. In part two Emanuel discusses the history of health care reform. He first covers the history of health care from Teddy Roosevelt, to Franklin Roosevelt, to Truman, to Lyndon Johnson, and on to Clinton. Truman was a strong advocate for national health care but was stopped by the first Republican controlled Congress since 1932. Johnson did manage to introduce Medicare and Medicaid laws, and most can remember what happened to Clinton’s proposal. Interestingly in 1971, there were 22 separate health insurance bills before Congress. Not one made it out of committee. We clearly see the difficult road that was followed to achieve some sort of national health care.Emanuel continues on to explain to us the details of the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the immediate challenges to the law. Just minutes after being signed into law, over 20 states filed a lawsuit challenging its constitutionality. This was to be followed by an incessant barrage of lawsuits over the ensuing years, some of which the Supreme Court had to decide. In Chapter eight, we get some very detailed information about exactly what is in the ACA. This is a very valuable chapter; it contains a wealth of information on the inner workings of the ACA. Many tables and charts are presented to explain to us exactly what this law does. It would behoove anyone interested in healthcare in American to read this over and learn the wealth of benefits provided by the law. Most people have no idea of all the things provided for by the law that ensures affordable healthcare, and it manages to (after ten years) be revenue positive, according to the Congressional Budget Office. In addition to access, according to Emanuel, “The ACA also addresses cost, quality, prevention and health promotion, health care workforce issues, and many other matters.”In a following chapter, the author shows us what the ACA means to us, before delving into Part III, where he discusses the future of health care in America. We are introduced to various “dashboards” that cover coverage, cost-control, quality, and overall health status. The author also discusses various reforms that build on the ACA to advance health promotion and prevention, cost control, and quality improvement that he says are “shovel ready.” In the final chapter, we are informed of the long-term impact of the ACA. It is the author’s belief we will eventually see the demise of insurance companies as we know them, and even the end of employer-sponsored health insurance. We will see more accountable care organizations (networks of physicians, hospitals and other providers). He also discusses four other trends.I recommend that anyone desiring an understanding of our American health care system read this book. It is as the author says, “in the longer sweep of history, beginning in 2020 or so, the ACA will increasingly be seen as a world historical achievement, even more important for the United States than Social Security and Medicare has been.” I think you will share this conclusion after reading this book.

Somewhat optimistic By Deborah Sue St Clair This book, like the affordable care act, was born from a combination of idealistic beliefs that the dysfunctional health care system was somehow separate from the dysfunctional class divided society that it supports and that the health care systems fails because of inefficiency within itself. In reality the system re-aligns itself periodically according to the payments system, and in this sense delivers what society asks of it to do. The book supports the myth that better technology and electronic health records will allow advanced data mining to discover new medical truths and improve efficiency, in spite of the fact that every advance in technology beyond immunization has raised costs.. It celebrates the highly efficient veteran's administration hospital system as the best we have. All this has some validity, but it was written before the Snowden revelations and before we discovered that the veterans hospitals cook the scheduling books before reporting their outcomes, bringing into disbelief all that these hospital system claims. But I was happy to read this book, and it is a smooth fast read giving insights into what the health care planners of the federal government read before they wrote the bill that congress voted after a year of heated debate, but never actually read themselves.

Branded on the slaves in the Northern Reaches beyond Ungstah, the scar marks each one as a Downer. It is who they are. There is no escaping this world. Still, strange things are stirring. Two foreigners ride through the Northern Reaches on a secret mission. An unknown cloaked figure wanders the streets of the dark city of Ungstah. What they want no one can be sure, but it all centers around a Downer named Crik. Crik, too scared to seek freedom, spends his days working in his master's store, avoiding the spirit-eating Ash Kings while scavenging food for himself and his best friend, Jak. Until he steals from the wrong person. When Jak is sold to satisfy the debt, Crik burns down his master's house and is sentenced to death. To survive, Crik and his friends must leave behind their life of slavery to do what no other Downer has ever done before--escape from the city of Ungstah.

Scar of the Downers, by Scott Keen

Review

  • "A fantastic debut from Scott Keen, visceral and imaginative, filled with both despair and hope." - Elizabeth Maria Naranjo, author of The Fourth Wall
  • "Scar of the Downers works with dramatic tension and visual grandeur, creating a narrative masterpiece that is thrilling, passionate and wise. The characters stay with you beyond the final chapter. Crik and the rest are truly vulnerable, inventive, devious and empathetic when the story demands."- Dr. Chester Branch, Transmedia Architect

About the Author Scott Keen grew up in Black River, NY, the youngest of three children. While in law school, he realized he didn't want to be a lawyer. So he did the practical thing--he became a writer. Now, many years later with an MFA in script and screenwriting, he is married with four daughters, two of whom he homeschools.

A fantastic debut By Elizabeth Maria Naranjo Crik and Jak are Downers, children branded with the mark of slavery and trapped in the oppressive city of Ungstah. Their master, Kilvar, owns a grungy shop where the boys are forced to work during the day selling stolen merchandise; in the evenings they scavenge for food. As long as they’re home by dusk they’re safe from the Ash Kings, phantom beings released each night from the smoky pit in the center of the city, beings that roam the streets in search of victims doomed to a searing, charred death. In a village named Arined a devoted father, Talorc, sets out on a journey to avenge his son Andevin. The village blacksmith and his young apprentice join Talorc, and throughout their journey the reader learns the history and legends of Ungstah and the Ash Kings. The reader also learns that Talorc is not simply out to avenge his son, but to complete an important mission which will decide the fate, and maybe the freedom, of Crik and Jak.I enjoyed this fantasy novel very much, particularly the uniqueness of it and the way Keen threads the history of his world throughout the story instead of condensing it in the first chapter. Crik is a likeable hero, scrappy and tough, a little too impulsive at times, a little too mistrustful at other times. He is, above all, dedicated to Jak and assumes full responsibility for the younger boy. Crik’s desire to protect Jak is both touching and sad—there is only so much he can do in the face of hunger, poverty, and the regular beatings from their cruel owner.Another thing that stands out in Keen’s world is the depiction of poverty—the dirt, the lice, the caked fingernails, the grime-coated shop windows. I appreciated these details, and the overall sense of place. When you read about Ungstah, you feel like you’re there, slinking through its dirty alleys with Crik and Jak.Fans of Middle-earth will recognize where Keen pays homage to Tolkien, especially in the adventures of Talorc. I really loved these scenes; there is such easy friendship and natural dialogue between the three men. And again, the slow unfolding of this world’s myths and legends was very well done.

An enjoyable read By Deborah Lim In my opinion, this book contained a medieval fantasy/alternate universe quest-style plot reminiscent of Avi and Stephen Lawhead, with a shade of Tolkien. It was an enjoyable middle to high school read, although there were several scenes that might not be as appropriate for children of middle school age. The themes of the beggar-hero, disguised supernatural being, and renegade community are very well developed and capture the reader's interest. I could see this first book in the series being translated quite well on the silver screen.

By EAK By the time I got to the last chapters of Scar of the Downers, I was whizzing through it, I couldn't put it down without knowing what would happen. No spoilers, but you won't be disappointed! When the book starts, the stakes are laid out - there's a caste of people who are the slaves (or Downers), and there's a movement brewing to free them. Mostly the story follows Crik and Jak, two Downers who live in the city of Ungstah and have a brother-type relationship because they are both owned by Kilvar, who is cruel and corrupt. Crik is the older of the two and is definitely my favorite character. He's loyal and kind to Jak and others, but he also has his faults. His character arc through the story is clear - he must make decisions and figure out what to do. His and Jak's future depend on it.This book's not just about Crik and Jak though, there's something bigger. There's a free city, and those people have committed to helping the Downers. This storyline is where we get the bigger picture of the whole land and the fantastical creatures that make up this world. There are the Rukmush, flesh-eating goblin-like creatures who stalk some of the free men, Dendron, a whole race of people who seem like they came from the trees and Hurag, wolf/bear-like creatures. The free men (Talorc, Gabril, and Edem) make their way to Ungstah, encountering (and sometimes fighting) these creatures, trying to complete the mission given to them by the supernatural beings of the Avarah, who are a type of messenger/prophet.And, there's also another character, whose storyline is small, but very important, and that's Durgan, captain of the guard in Ungstah. He's got problems of his own, because his inner conflict regarding King Sulfus of Ungstah doesn't seem like it will end well for him. He just seems to have too much moral integrity to make it in that town. The book goes back and forth between these three storylines, until they converge into a tremendous finale that is action-packed and character-revealing. The ending is satisfying, but if you're like me, you'll be eager to read the sequel!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It will get you by surprise! By Silly1 I have to say that this book took me by surprise. I was expecting the light banter, hints of young love, and touch of mystery that the first book had. Not the case with this one.The beginning of the book starts of light and makes you believe it will guide you along on a magic carpet ride of wonder. But then, BAM! The story changes, the complexity triples while the action doubles and the characters reach beyond your wildest imagination. The Author leaves your mind reeling, still trying to understand what happened when it's all done. I've read the book twice and still sorting through my "who did it" theory.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I really love how each of the characters get stronger and wiser ... By candy hernandez The story continues...This time the preston six got separated.mutant island, sanct, ryjack, back to earth... several places they went to with different adventures thinking that they have to come back for joey and samantha where they held captive in a scene simulator by MM.I really love how each of the characters get stronger and wiser after surviving the jump from their spaceship where it was bombed on air by MM.You wont be disappointed in this adventurous, exciting sequel of the Preston 6. You will keep cheering them on to get to each to be together as a group to rescue Samantha and Joey.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This sequel did not disappoint. It picks up right where the first book ... By JSP This sequel did not disappoint. It picks up right where the first book ends. Joey awakens to find that he is in some sort of carnival. Luckily, when he wakes up he is not alone. Samantha is waiting for him. His heart belongs to Polly, but he feels responsible for her death, along with the rest of his friends.Unknown to Joey; Polly, Hank, Julie, Lucas and Harris have all survived. Now they are on a mission to try and rescue Joey from the hands of Marcus and Max. We get to learn more about Polly, her love for Joey, as well as her determination to do whatever she must, to save him. We also get to see a little of her weakness. I loved how the author shows how strong Polly is, but how the weight of everything can still almost hurt you as much. This book is just as fast paced and exciting as the first book. Their are twists and turns at every chapter. Just when you think the gang has finally found their way home, they are thrown right back into the fight. What I really enjoy about this book, is that when they are thrown back into the drama, it isn't by bad choices. It is by being mislead. The Six are not weak, they are young. You find yourself cheering them on at every step and crying when they are hurt. By the end of this book I won't lie, you are going to want to kill Marcus yourself. So be warned.

Can love take root in the cracks of time? Air Force pilot Andromeda “Andie” Kim dreams of being chosen to join NASA so she can go to space. Instead, she’s stolen by savage kidnappers from a dystopian future where fertile women are needed for breeding purposes. One of her kidnappers, a man named Mace, goes out of his way to protect her from the other slavers, but she’s not about to trust him. All she wants is to escape and find a way back to her time before she's sold as broodstock and stuck in this ruined world forever. Colonel Aloysius “Mace” Theron of the Cascadian Alliance is a battlefield commander, not a spy, but after twenty years of service, he’s also trusted by his superiors. That’s why they choose him for a top-secret mission: to infiltrate an organization of thieves using a time machine to plunder the past. He’s supposed to find and destroy the machine, not fall in love with one of the captives, but Andie is as much of a fighter as he is, and he’s drawn to her from the beginning. Yet if he fights too hard to protect her, his identity will be discovered and his mission will fail, leaving criminals to terrorize the past, perhaps irrevocably changing history and endangering everyone he knows and loves.

By Abillard Time travel romance is something that evokes a very distinct concept for me: women from modern Western culture suddenly reappearing in pre-Treaty of Edinburgh Scotland. Because kilts. This book does not involve kilts or Scotland in any way. Andie and her friend Min-Ji are woman-napped into the future, where the Space Needle rises from the depths of the Puget Sea. While trying to escape their captors and return to their own time, Andie allies herself with Cascade Alliance Colonel Theron, who fortunately looks much better under the beard and grime than his patchy fur coat might suggest. This book contains copious amount of nudity, a mutually enthusiastic sex scene, kick-assery, as well as nude kick-assery. For people who care about this sort of thing, it also has competent characters, little whining or hand-wringing, a multi-ethnic cast, characters that have seen the far side of thirty, and witty banter throughout the story, even the doomed enemy guards. Heads up for those who might appreciate it: rape does happen off-text.I have read every text from this author under both pen names, and Stars Across Time lives up to her standard of adventure, banter, clever female leads with nothing to prove and excellent taste in men. 10/10 would recommend.

Time travel romance and adventure By Happy Customer8 I would put this book at 3, the lowest I have ever rated this author as she is one of my favorites. SOME SPOILERS HERE - you've been warned. I just had a hard time buying the attraction between the main characters in a situation where she was abducted and mistreated and threatened with gang rape (not by him, but still). That part of the story was just too rushed - for me, there needed to be some distance from that situation before the attraction started. It felt too contrived to me. I hesitate to say unrealistic because we're talking about a time travel romance for Pete's sake! I'm also not a huge fan of time travel romance so that plays into it. On the plus side, the character development is good and the action/adventure keeps you hooked, rooting for the characters until near the end. Alas, the end itself felt rushed and contrived and very predictable. All in all, this is not up to par with the author's usual work. It's a different genre and one I'm not all that into, but I still thought the story-telling just wasn't at the same level as other books.

By Ann de Vries I read this book through the Kindle Unlimited programme, so I won't show as a verified purchaser.I have almost all of this author's books and both my husband and I love them. This book was very different from her other work, but every bit as good in its own way. As I started reading it, I was taken aback at first. I was expecting a book in the style of EE or her Ruby Lionsdrake space series, but once I saw where it was going, I relaxed and went along for the adventure. The world building, characterization, and dialogue were excellent, as per the author's usual standards. The plot was very entertaining and the time travel, facilitated by a time machine, was a nice nod to H.G. Wells and early science fiction. The hero and heroine were very likeable and made a great team, while supporting characters were also well fleshed out. This story was definitely grittier than Buroker's/Lionsdrake's other works and the sex was more explicit. I'm quite catholic in my reading tastes. I like books with no sex, profanity or violence and I like them with a moderate amount of explicit sex, situationally appropriate profanity and moderate violence. With this book, Buroker told an engaging story with the right amount of sex and violence appropriate to the plot.I enjoyed this book as much as Buroker's/Lionsdrake's other books. It was very well written, held my interest and left me wanting more. While the quality of the writing and storytelling was of the same caliber as Buroker's other works, this book was very different. Readers who want another EE will be disappointed. Those who like to explore other genres and sub-genres, and can adjust to an author writing in more than one style, might really enjoy this departure from Buroker's norm.I highly recommend this book. Fans, read it for what it is, on its own merits, and not for what you expect or want it to be, and you will discover how versatile a writer Buroker is. Those new to Buroker/Lionsdrake, this is a departure from her normal style, but it is also an excellent read.

Captain Lana Fiveworlds has a hell of a lot of problems. She's sliding void in an ageing seven-hundred-year-old space ship, scrabbling around the edges of civilised space trying to find a cargo lucrative enough to pay her bills without proving so risky that it'll kill her. She's got an alien religious freak for a navigator, an untrustworthy android for a first mate, a disgraced lizard for a trade negotiator and a deserter from the fleet acting as her chief engineer. And that was well before an ex-crewman turns up wanting Lana to rescue a barbarian prince from a long-failed colony world. Unfortunately for Lana, the problems she doesn't know about are even more dangerous. In fact, they just might be enough to destroy Lana's rickety but much-loved vessel, the Gravity Rose, and jettison her and her crew into the void without a spacesuit. But there's one thing you can never tell an independent space trader. That's the odds . . .

By Amy Void All the Way Down is a collection of three stories about the captain of a creaking spaceship and her small, but motley, crew on a past its prime ship. While they aren’t pirates, they’re clients certainly aren’t to be trusted. Captain Lana Fiveworld’s past is shrouded in mystery and she’s desperate to make it to her future. I liked how the author mixed in familiar company names and even some jargon to make the fictional universe he created easier for the reader to believe. I like how these stories ended, but I can’t wait to read the next adventure.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Exciting read!! By Anna-A This was such an exciting and adventure filled book! Stephen Hunt has hit the ball out of the park with this one. I am a huge fan of science fiction stories so I am very critical and expect a lot from my authors. This one definitely does not disappoint. The characters and the storyline are so well developed that I challenge anyone to find a better volume of sci-fi stories anywhere. I could easily see this book made into a major motion picture or a reoccurring television series. I would say that it is just as good as some of the bigger more popular sci-fi adventures like Star Wars. I do not like to talk about plots or specifics, as I would never want to ruin a good read such as this for another reader. But, take it from me you will absolutely love this book! 5 big stars!

PDF Ebook Online The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life, by Jeffrey S. Bland

For decades, Dr. Jeffrey Bland has been on the cutting edge of Functional Medicine, which seeks to pinpoint and prevent the cause of illness, rather than treat its symptoms. Managing chronic diseases accounts for three quarters of our total healthcare costs, because we’re masking these illnesses with pills and temporary treatments, rather than addressing their underlying causes, he argues. Worse, only treating symptoms leads us down the path of further illness.

In The Disease Delusion, Dr. Bland explains what Functional Medicine is and what it can do for you. While advances in modern science have nearly doubled our lifespans in only four generations, our quality of life has not reached its full potential. Outlining the reasons why we suffer chronic diseases from asthma and diabetes to obesity, arthritis and cancer to a host of other ailments, Dr. Bland offers achievable, science-based solutions that can alleviate these common conditions and offers a roadmap for a lifetime of wellness.

Easton Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research, Director, Neurodegenerative Disease Research David Geffen School of Medicine UCLA)“Filled with solid science, fascinating medical detective stories, and practical tips, this powerful book can save your life.” (Daniel G. From the Back Cover

Treatment of chronic diseases—diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, dementia, and many others—is responsible for 78 percent of total health-care costs in the United States. Yet instead of identifying, preventing, and addressing their underlying causes, we're managing symptoms of these illnesses with pills and temporary remedies. In The Disease Delusion, we learn how we can fundamentally change how we perceive illness and approach a cure.

Dr. Jeffrey Bland leverages a lifetime on the cutting edge of research and practice to create a road map to good health by helping us understand our bodies' fundamental processes and the root causes of chronic illness.

Complete with self-evaluation questionnaires and sample meal plans, and supported by the most recent advances in health science, Dr. Bland's book is indispensable for anyone determined to live long and well.

Must read for anyone living inside a human body By Alejandro Junger I had been to medical school for 8 years, done 6 years of postgraduate training and had practiced as a cardiologist for another 8 years before I discovered the teachings of Jeffrey Bland. My medical practice was transformed in such a profound way that not only allowed me to get way better results with my patients ( with way less medications ) but also to enjoy doing it.Now anyone can learn these concepts and practices through this new book, which I consider a masterpiece.Do yourself a huge favor and read this book...

It explains why conventional medicine doesn't work for chronic illness, because it just treats symptoms and creates side-effects. It talks about using nutrition and natural plant-based supplements as vital components of true healing. It has good information about the different systems of your body, how they interconnect, and how interventions affect the entire network of your body.So why the three-star rating? Jeffery makes some recommendations and uses some protocols that are actively dangerous, and can make you very sick. Then there are many recommendations that are not optimal, and a number of key things that are missing.--- Dangerous ---(1) Jeffery describes diagnosing and treating a patient with mercury poisoning, using a "challenge" test, where the patient is given a high dose of a chelator, followed by measuring the change in mercury content of his/her urine. The idea is that a large increase shows that mercury has been stored in his/her body, and that he/she needs to clear it to recover good health. The problem is that high single doses of a chelator mobilize mercury, move it around, and if it settles in the wrong place it can cause serious, possibly permanent damage. Google "DMPS backfire" for some examples. DMSA and EDTA, the other common challenge tests, have the same issue. The correct way to diagnose and treat chronic mercury toxicity, and other heavy metal poisoning, is through a hair test, using Andy Cutler's diagnostic protocols. (See his book on Hair Test Interpretation: Finding Hidden Toxicities.) This is completely safe and indicates total body burden, as compared to blood/urine tests which do not show what has been stored in your brain/organs/bones.(2) Jeffery's week of sample menus includes a meal with 6.5 oz of tuna. The danger here is that tuna is a high-mercury fish, and albacore tuna can exceed 1 micro-gram/gram of mercury. So 6.5 ounces (about 200g) can give you 200ug of mercury. This is not something you want, ever, because a percentage of this will end up in your brain and organs and slowly poison you over time. (The half-life of mercury in the brain appears to be about 20 years.) Even light tuna is a high-mercury fish. If you are going to eat fish, eat Alaskan wild-caught salmon, or small fish like sardines.(3) Jeffery mentions andrographis. This is an excellent treatment for acute infections, but lowers progesterone and is used as a contraceptive/abortifact. Don't use it while you are pregnant or trying to conceive.--- Non-optimal ---(1) Jeffery doesn't have any way to treat heavy metal poisoning, except with nutrition, anti-oxidants, and time. These may help you feel better, but the only way to reduce body stores effectively is to chelate. The only chelation protocol that has been shown to be safe is frequent-low-dose chelation, which has been used by thousands of people. This process slowly clears the toxic metals from your body, without the risk of serious harm that comes from high intermittent doses. See Andy Cutler's book on Amalgam Illness, Diagnosis and Treatment : What You Can Do to Get Better, How Your Doctor Can Help for details.Because Jeffery doesn't use hair tests, he cannot diagnose people who have heavy metal poisoning as the root cause of their poor health. For example, he treated a patient for Gulf War post-traumatic-stress-syndrome. This was likely caused by the thimerosol in the multiple vaccines given to these soldiers. (The French did not use thimerosol in their vaccines, and their solders did not get PTSD.) If so, then this patient would have been properly diagnosed with a hair test, and returned to true good health via frequent-low-dose-chelation.Because many people have heavy metal poisoning, and heavy metal poisoning can cause any/all physical symptoms, a hair test for heavy metals should be the first test any health practitioner does for a new patient.(2) I'm surprised that someone who mentions Weston Price has such a phobia for saturated fat. Weston Price observed many traditional cultures with very high saturated fat intake. All of them were extremely healthy and long-lived, with excellent bones/teeth and no chronic degenerative diseases or dementia. Instead of taking this information to heart, Jeffery's nutrition advice is far from optimal. The best book on nutrition ever written is the Jaminet's Perfect Health Diet: Regain Health and Lose Weight by Eating the Way You Were Meant to Eat, much superior to what's in this book.(3) For food sensitivities and healing auto-immune disease, a much better book is Sarah Ballantyne's The Paleo Approach: Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body.(4) For treating thyroid/adrenal issues, the best diagnostic protocol appears to be temperature measurement twice a day, and supplementing with glandulars/thyroid until everything stabilizes appropriately. You don't even need to see a doctor. An enjoyable book describing this, and other helpful protocols, is Danial Forsyth's The Mercury Diaries.--- Missing ---(1) No mention of how posture affects health (poor posture is one of the key factors in osteoporosis and osteoarthritis). Best books for this are Esther Gokhale's 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back: Natural Posture Solutions for Pain in the Back, Neck, Shoulder, Hip, Knee, and Foot, Katy Bowman's Alignment Matters: The First Five Years of Katy Says, and any/all of Pete Egoscue's books. The Egoscue Clinics are extremely helpful in getting where you want to be.(2) No mention of proprioception and how blockages can affect health. Best/only book is Simon King's Live Without Pain: A New Theory on What's Wrong with You and How to Fix It..(3) No mention that our bodies are designed for frequent, low-intensity movement, and that this is essential for health. Best book is Joan Vernikos's Sitting Kills, Moving Heals: How Everyday Movement Will Prevent Pain, Illness, and Early Death -- and Exercise Alone Won't.(4) Jeffery does mention massage for improving lymph flow, but does not mention lymphatic drainage massage specifically, or medi-cupping, both of which excellent. Medi-cupping gets phenomenal results, highly recommended.

Wahls M.D. I am a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. I discovered Functional Medicine in 2007 and used the principles described by Dr. Jeff Bland to restore my health and vitality after having six years of steady decline and spending four years in a tilt/recline wheelchair due to secondary progressive MS. I can now walk easily, bike 20 miles with my family and even jog again. Over one hundred years ago, Thomas Edison foretold that, “The physician of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his [or her] patient in a proper diet, the care of the human frame and the cause and prevention of disease”. Sadly physicians are mostly still in love with the latest greatest and priciest drugs and interventions. We are finally seeing that prophecy come to pass in the work of Dr. Bland and Functional Medicine. With The Disease Delusion you will be introduced to Functional Medicine and how you can finally understand the real root cause of health and of disease, and most importantly what you can do to create health and thereby stabilize and reverse the vast majority of chronic health problems. Your will learn that your environment, every aspect of it, is talking to your genes and creating your state of health or of disease. Your will also learn the tools to begin changing the messages from your environment to your genes to create health and begin the process of restoring vitality. I tell my patients who have suffered for years, often decades, to give me just a month of a functional medicine approach to health and then decide at the end of the month whether to continue the diet and lifestyle changes I recommend on the basis of Functional Medicine. Time and time again I see blood pressures fall, blood sugars normalize, mood stabilize, autoimmune conditions reverse. The need for medications steadily decline. People are able to reduce and eliminate medication after medication as their bodies repair themselves. This book is life changing. It will give you the tools to understand how to become well once again. Terry Wahls, M.D., author The Wahls Protocol How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine.

Kateri is "the responsible one" amongst the Surreal Sisters, a family that makes the Addams Family look like the Gilmore Girls. Tired of dating men who take advantage of her take-charge nature, she's on the lookout for an alpha male...but a disastrous date with a werewolf has made her skittish. Against her better judgement, she goes out with the hot yoga instructor that has been frequenting her coffee shop. She's surprised to find he has the forceful nature--and coils of rope--that can give her what she's been craving. This cat does it downward doggie style. If you don't like sexy shifters, move along. If laughing out loud makes you cranky, you're in the wrong place. If you like your heroines weak and clumsy, you'll probably be happier somewhere else.

So funny, I gobbled this story right up and found myself totally absorbed right away. I thought the story about the werewolf was hilarious - but so funny how she was willing to play along. And the little details about werepanther life were delicious and subtle. This is not my first Stikki Minaj story and won't be my last either - excellent read leading up to MAJOR HOTNESS!

Except for Hugh. I thought he was kind of a pompous ass. You can feel the single girl struggle like it really is. Bringing Yoga and ropes into the story was new but also a fun aspect. I think it was great that she got the Yoga class right, many people don't. The curse is different since it kind of precludes building a relationship and just jumping until I marriage with an untried stranger, which would be crazy! I really liked this book, it was a fast read that kept my interest.
