But before either side can outwit the other, Rip flies the saucer away with the help beautiful test pilot Charley Pine, embarking on a fantastic journey into space and around the world, keeping just ahead of those who want the saucer for themselves.

Saucer: The ConquestSomeone is using top-secret information about saucer technology—information that comes from the mysterious top-secret region in Nevada known as Area 51. Meanwhile, a furious duel is in the offing between a megalomaniac bent on the conquest of Earth and a handful of runaway heroes. As a plot that reaches back 50 years explodes, a horrific weapon is trained on the Earth's cities; humankind is dragged to the brink and offered a fearsome choice: surrender or die. And Rip and Charley are the only ones who can save them.

Saucer: Savage PlanetA year after Rip discovered the first flying saucer buried deep in the sands of the Sahara, another saucer is brought up from the bottom of the Atlantic. The recovery is funded by a pharmaceutical executive who believes that the saucer holds the key to an anti-aging drug formula that space travelers would need to voyage between galaxies. In a world turned upside down, it may be the arriving aliens who offer limitless possibilities, and Rip and Charley face an incredible decision: Do they dare leave the safety of earth to travel into the great wilderness of the universe?

This is the type of read that keeps me going, so I can see what happens next. Not a deep read, but relaxing and entertaining. Characters are simple, with clear motivations. Technology is interesting, with some thought provoking "what ifs" included.

It starts out with Marrow- he is the main character- trying to score really high on his superhero placement test. He's basically a really powerful superhero who has the power to change his bone density, allowing him to smash through walls and jump really really high since he can make himself very heavy or very light. He gets teamed up with his least favorite superhero as his sidekick, Flex. Flex has stretchy powers, and Marrow think that's kind of dumb. They end up having to figure out how to work together even though sometimes they really get on each other's nerves. There's a super awesome climax that I won't spoil here, with twists that you don't expect. You just have to read it for yourself.I would see this book is really good for anyone who likes Hunger Games or Maze Runner, but it also has an added touch of humor that makes it unique. It's especially awesome if you love comic books or superheroes. Even if you don't you will be engaged with the story. I recommended it!

The reader is left to guess whether our hero doesn't understand that he's super strong and borderline invulnerable or if someone By James There's nothing wrong with the premise of Marrow - only in the execution. Our main character has a superpower that would kill him the way he uses it. The reader is left to guess whether our hero doesn't understand that he's super strong and borderline invulnerable or if someone flat-out lied to him about it. The ability to increase your bone density doesn't make you stronger. Just the opposite, in fact. It would weigh you down. At one point he smashes through a car - and does so without so much as a scratch. Your bones could be solid steel, but your skin and organs would still be pulped. Our main character is 14 years old, for reasons that escape me. Maybe because despite being lauded as a genius, he's really, really slow on the uptake? His age might be an excuse for the reader to cut him some slack. Honestly, it's fine - I'd just cut the line or two where people praise him for being smart. I don't see superheroes lining up to train fourteen year olds, though. The liability insurance alone would be insane. Was the age chosen just to avoid too much romantic subplot? To aim the book at younger readers? It comes off as being an arbitrary and poorly justified choice.Telekinetic + Telepathic does not equal Omnipotent. Again, I could see how the writer wants to stress what a useful, powerful combo that would be... but 'all powerful' is a bit much. It was such a bad choice of term it yanked me right out of the narrative. Why not 'Advanced Mind' or 'Dual-aspect Mentat,' or just about anything that actually pertains to mental powers and not godhood? One person in every 20 in this world has superpowers. That's insane. That's six or seven times as many demigods walking around as there are rich people. You'd be overrun by villains. FedEx would be entirely staffed by teleporters and speedsters. Never mind superheroes, if 5% of the cops have powers. Also the military... you'd have super-geniuses running businesses and colleges and the unpowered would be all but literally begging for scraps. Even if most people with powers have minor powers, that many of them would seriously reorder the society in ways that aren't touched on in this story. All that having been said - it was a fun read. Well paced, with characters that weren't unlikable. I would have preferred to see the protagonists aged another five years, and the book doubled in length and taken more seriously by the author... I'm glad I read it, but... there was a lot of potential here that was never explored.

By Alyssean I know when I am really into a book, because I will stop reading at certain parts and wait until I have a secluded area and plenty of time, with no interruptions, so I can get everything I can out of a scene. While reading Marrow, I had many moments like that. The writing style I found to be quirky, and full of originality. It was just plain, good writing and it flowed. The way the protagonist, Marrow, describes certain places and people made me laugh. I loved his cocky attitude, and his good heart. It had great twists here and there, and I loved that the story unfolded in a non predictable way. It was a new take on superheroes, and yes, just saying "He's Batman," does justify any situation. You'll understand when you read it.

By Max Andreola It's immediately easy to tell on this one how much craft and care went into ensuring a quality end product, that's easily consumable by anyone, yet is still able to speak to and deliver something useful for everyone, regardless of experience levels in the area. The beautiful full color pages are brilliant, and from the clean and clear implementation screenshots to the unique syntax highlighting theme color palette used on code snippets continuously taking advantage of this vintage medium, those of you that typically enjoy your tech books from the screen will find yourselves rediscovering the simple joys reading a book can bring with every page turn, as the desire to embrace this finely crafted experience overwhelms you.

By Amazon Customer Ken’s book went over a great set of tools that are useful to both UX designers and front-end developers. I really liked how he had step-by-step screenshots to easily get you started with the tools and information about WHY and WHEN to use them. Many of the tools were great time savers and allowed you to test fast, test often, and test on a variety of screen sizes. Chrome tools are really powerful on the front-end. The PhantomJS tool was really useful for writing automated tests and rendering screenshots on the UI. It’s great when you can skip manually filling in data and clicking buttons to see if your UI still works after a css or JavaScript change.

34 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Four stars: A magical realism story that will enchant you. By Heidi Ophelia Brown is almost ninety years old. She has lived in the Memory House by herself, protecting the objects that hold special memories. Ophelia has no children or family, so she is anxious to find someone who will carry on her legacy. Finally by chance, a young lady, Annie, shows up on her doorstep looking to rent a room for night. Ophelia dares to hope that Annie might be the one. Over some magical dandelion tea, the two talk, and Ophelia knows that Annie is indeed the one. Can Ophelia convince Annie that there is magic in memories? What I Liked:*I am a sucker for magical realism stories as I like to believe that there is the possibility of magic in the real world. Ms. Crosby delivers a sweet and simple story with two unforgettable women who forge a lovely friendship, along with a pinch of magic. If you are looking for a light, quick, cozy read, this is a sure bet.*I adored Ophelia Brown. At almost ninety years old, she knows she is nearing the end of her life. Yet, she is as active and alive as ever. Ophelia has a special gift for blending herbs in a way that helps others, almost a bit like magic. Ophelia is wise, and a bit magical. Along with her gift for herbs, she has a talent for being able to glean memories off from certain objects. Every once in awhile, something she handles will impart memories of the past from its previous owner to Ophelia. Ophelia believes that memories have their own life and that it is up to her to share her gift. Ophelia is one of those characters who will immediately draw you in.*Annie is a young woman, struggling with the every day burdens of life. A job that has gone sour and a failed romance, lead her on a small getaway. Annie lands on Ophelia's doorstep, and soon, the women form a fast friendship. I liked that Annie was quickly able to open her heart to Ophelia and her mind to the possibility of magic. I enjoyed watching her journey and seeing her transform. Together, Annie and Ophelia are magical.*The story take us through Annie's troubled romance as well as Ophelia's long lost love. I liked Ophelia's romance, it is one that is sweet and sad. Annie after a struggle finally learns to let go, and in the end, a lovely new romance awaits her as well. I loved both romances.*I have only read two books by Ms. Crosby prior to this one, and I liked that there were traces of the two stories I knew in this book. Fans of Ms. Crosby will be delighted to know that all the articles that possess memories in the house are from her other novels, so if you have read all her books, you will easily be able to pick out what item goes to which story, and you will understand the history of each item. I thought this was a clever and unique concept. And The Not So Much:*This was a quick, light read, but I didn't like that it ended a bit abruptly. It stops just at the point where things are moving in a happy, positive direction for Annie. I was expecting a bit more resolution for both Annie and Ophelia. It almost felt like a prequel, and I am hopeful that there will be more story to come because there is certainly more story to tell.*This is a personal preference, but for me, I feel the book would have been more impactful if the author had stuck strictly to a first person narrative throughout. The majority of the story is told via third person, but then there are these small chapters that are done in first person that relay Annie or Ophelia's thought. I felt much more connected to the chapters done in first person vs. the third person.Memory House is a simple, sweet story perfect for those who love a small dose of magic. This is the perfect cozy read for when you need a quick pick me up or for when you need a easy way to wile away an afternoon or a stormy day. This is a book with memorable characters, a touching romance and a nice story. Give it a try.Favorite Quotations:" A good memory is something you ave to live with for a while, let it settle in and become part of who you are. Then when it's feeling at home and welcome, you can move on to the next one.""The thing is," Ophelia adds, "there's a big difference in missing someone because they filled a hole in your life and missing someone because they were your whole life."I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated for this review.Posted@Rainy Day Ramblings.

Collins A special thank you to Bent Pine Publishing and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. The MEMORY HOUSE, (Book #1 Memory House Series) is a magical book of memories, of stories; from award-winning master southern storyteller, Bette Lee Crosby- bringing treasures of unique gifts, while re-connecting with much loved previous heart-warming characters.Ophelia Browne is approaching ninety years of age, and runs a small quaint bed and breakfast, Memory House B&B, in her charming picturesque home surrounded by a quaint garden. On the far edge of Richmond, Virginia, a small town of Burnsville, with winding streets and quaint houses, some dating back to the nineteenth century--Ophelia lives in the white house at the end of Haber Street. A passerby would not readily notice her house, partially hidden, she has a small apothecary shop, restoring faith and making miracles. She misses her husband of many years who died and has a unique gift of caring for forgotten memories. She needs to pass along her memories and gift, to the right person; however, she worries she is getting older and this person has not come along, as of yet; however, this may soon change.Annie Cross needs a break, from Philadelphia, and she has no destination in mind. She has to think, and get away from her personal life and professional life. A thousand subtle reminders of the love that has died a slow and painful death after seven years. She picks up for the weekend alone and stumbles upon Memory House B&B, and decides to stay for the weekend. Little does she know this trip will be the start of remembering. However, what she discovers is so magical, drawing her into the smells, the comfort and serenity the place, its owner, its memories, the garden, and the setting. She winds up getting to know Ophelia, a wise woman, drinking tea, great conversation, and working in the garden. She extends her relaxing stay for a week, and knows in her heart, she will return soon.Ophelia connects with Annie and knows she is the one who will appreciate and understand the memories. A lifetime of special people and memories and the ways they connect. She will tell her the story of Edward, her husband and all the other unique people in her life. She remembers everything, from her own life and from the lives of those who came before her. She has only to touch her hand to an object and can feel the special memory clinging to it. Few women have lived to be her age in the family and she needs to find a replacement before her death, or the memories may be lost forever. Now there is hope.Annie is not in any rush to get back to her normal life with Michael, surrounded by numbers; she is captivated by Ophelia, her life, her past, and her stories. However, as much as Ophelia wants to embrace Annie, she is also fearful for Annie, the future-- and does not want to scare her away. She wants it to be her choice and cannot force it. Annie has to uncover new memories, and some not so pleasant, and ones buried. Sometimes the past has to be faced, in order to move on to a new future.Ophelia tells of the memory she discovered in each treasure, but like so many aspects of life there is more-much more. All of these treasurers have a story that came before and after; an unfaithful lover, a lifetime of heartaches, a heavy-handed father, a mother who would give her life to save a child. Each of these stories can be found in one of Bette's other novels. If you have not had a chance to read, Spare Change, Jubilee's Journey, Passing Through Perfect, Twelfth Child, Previously Loved Treasures, Wishing for Wonderful or What Matters Most , you will get a brief summary of each as well as how they connect to this special story.Would recommend reading them all, and as Bette says, "The best stories are always the ones that start with a grain of truth, and then grow into something magical!"I have loved all Bette’s inspiring stories— her passion is reflected through each of her books, from quirky southern tales, award-winning stories, special friends, and eccentric characters which will warm your heart, making you smile, filled with life lessons, wit and humor, and takeaways you will remember long after the book ends.Memory House is magical, and fans of Sarah Addison Allen, Lisa Van Allen, Donna Ball, and Catherine Ryan Hyde, will enjoy, this one, as well as fans of all her previous books which connect in a special unique way."A memory is what is left when something happens, and does not completely unhappen." - Edward de Bono

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Infomercial for the rest of the series - avoid! By CR Don't understand all the 5 star reviews. I like books in which the characters are believable, the action driven by the characters - that's totally lacking here - and I suspect that may be the case with the books she's trying to get me to read. (You don't need to read the book, just read the epilogue.) In Memory House, there's nearly no plot, the characters are almost without substance (and what's there is annoying) - they exist merely to serve the "device" which is to act as a teaser for the other books in the series. The two main characters are being "moved around" to highlight the next vignette. Their behavior is not believable. This is a pity, because technically, Crosby seems to be able to write. If she'd posted a real book as a freebie - and if the characters and their actions were believable - I might have been inclined to read (and therefore buy) others.

“Forsaken” is book #4 in the Systemic series. It’s been a long and arduous journey since John Stevens rallied his family together in the remote forests of southern Illinois in an effort to shelter them from the most devastating pandemic in history. Now they’ve finally discovered a secluded spot in the abandoned town of Olsten, Georgia where they finally feel safe from the dangers of the outside world. But are they? While John and his family look for solace from the Su flu’s aftermath, Jake Stines and Ava Acadro are searching for anything but isolation. They’re looking to make their way – no, force their way – into a world that fits them perfectly – no rules, no laws, no mercy. Willing to take what they want or die trying, the two are setting up shop in the wilds of the Atlanta metro area. But will their combination of brawn and brains be enough to solidify their presence in the city? About the Author: K.W. Callahan left his role in the hospitality industry to pursue a career in writing. Since then, he has written books on a variety of subjects as well as penned articles for numerous print and online publications. Before his work on the Systemic series, K.W. authored several other novels that include: The M.O.D. Files: The Guest Who Stayed Over, a murder mystery set within the confines of a landmark Chicago hotel, and Palos Heights, a suspense thriller that follows four college students on a weekend bike trip that takes a dark and deadly turn.

The survivors finally have an opportunity to breathe easier and get some needed rest. There's no doubt that they are blessed with a taste of normalcy. Well, as normal as life can be when they're always waiting for disaster to strike, ripping away their good fortune. The group knows not to get too comfortable! While John's group is thriving, unfortunately, so are Jake and Ava. They're like a pestilence that keeps spreading and can't be destroyed. This is an exceptional series!

By Sandra B While I love the continuing saga of John, Claire and family, this book had at least 70% of Jake and Ava's storyline and less of the main characters. I like how Jake and Ava have their own thing going on and I am just waiting for the scumbag Jake to get his comeuppance from either Ava or her guys. With that said, John's story line was boring this time so it evened out. I am curious how the author wraps up the ending. On to the 5th and final book!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Can You Give A Man A Break? By Trisha Doran Great books - I love dystopian novels/series and wow this guy John just cannot get a break. But there's always hope, which is what I like. Very tense most of the time and very exciting.

All's not quiet on the western front…

A massive breakout at Rawlins Prison kills most of its personnel. As 72 inmates escape, the United Territories begins the greatest manhunt of all time. Two of those inmates are Dan Q and Cole Jackson.

Linked by a pair of shackles, Dan and Cole search for their contacts and a chance at freedom in Saratoga. But in this town, aptly nicknamed "The Den of Bounty Hunters," the fugitives have little chance at a second escape. As a gang of corrupt bounty hunters chases them down, with the U.T. marshals not far behind, will Dan and Cole make it out alive?

Dangerous Faces, Volume 1 is the first installment in a six-part Western epic centered around a prison escape, a manhunt, and a scramble for the most dangerous weapon in U.T. history. If you like captivating stories, bloody shootouts, colorful characters, and a hint of sci-fi, then you'll love Joseph Jammer Medina's refreshing new entry to the Western genre.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. When I Roll (Into the Wild Wild West) By Dominic Rosales The first volume of a planned six part epic, Dangerous Faces Volume 1 does a great job of establishing the lead characters, and presenting us with a city ruled by outlaws. The four stars is not because of quality, because it's five star quality from a budding author, but mainly because I wanted more in the way of character development for the two main characters, Dan Q and Cole (which I'm sure will be explored in the successive volumes). Overall Dangerous Faces Volume 1 brings the reader into a lawless land out of your greatest western fantasy, and leaves us hungry for more. Volume 2 can't come out soon enough.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A refreshing page turner with plenty of promise By D_Sidd Dangerous Faces is a fresh take in the Western scene and was an entertaining mashup of sci-fi and spaghetti western. The author does a great job creating unique, quirky characters that keep you turning the pages. I'll definitely be checking out the next installment.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great start from a promising author By C Dante Great start from a promising author! Fun characters and engaging plot. Moving forward, I'm hoping for more character development of the leads, Dan and Cole, and jumping into their world. Excited for where Medina will take things. Definitely give this one a read!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Best Example of an Amazon Rip-Off, I have seen By ronb This 'book' is totally worthless. It is practically devoid on any sample code, except for three lines show lists!list1 = [‘Biology’, ‘English’, 1997, 2000];list2 = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5];list3 = [“a”, “b”, “c”, “d”];The first three chapters give a brief description of Python's Features (2 pages), Installation (4 pages) and Choosing a Text Editor/IDE (4 pages). The second HALF of the book covers the Python Library (2 pages), Data Structures (1 1/2 pages), Learning to Code (1 page) and Reason for Choosing Python (2 pages)The 'Chapter' on Data Structures explains Lists in 16 lines, include the examples above. It goes on say you can access values in a list by indexing or slicing without actually show what it might look like! The paragraph explaining tuples, incorrectly states "you can use the square brackets or parentheses...with a comma to separate the items." And finally the entire coverage of Dictionaries says..."The Python Dictionaries are an extremely useful and flexible data type. They store valueswith keys. When looking up the values, you use the key. Besides storing values, you canuse the dictionaries to build complex nested data structures."That it! But at least Dictionaries are mentioned. The words 'while' and 'if' don't appear anywhere in this book! There also no mention of strings, files or functions!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Too light on content! By Maja Not enough info. This is a light overview that can apply to any language and hence nothing specific to Python! Not worth the $$$

The author begins with the features of Python and then moves on to how to install it into different programs. There are a lot of examples so you know exactly what you are doing. There are chapters on the Python library, data structures, learning the code and of course why you should use Python.

A remastered 2-in-1 edition of the all-time classic hit from one of Japan’s most beloved creators, available for the first time in a format faithful to the original work. One day, teenage martial artist Ranma Saotome went on a training mission with his father and ended up taking a dive into some cursed springs at a legendary training ground in China. Now, every time he’s splashed with cold water, he changes into a girl. His father, Genma, changes into a panda! What’s a half-guy, half-girl to do? Ranma learns what being a loser feels like for once when Happosai applies a strength-sapping technique that leaves him weak as a baby! The humiliation continues for our emasculated hero when the only way Ryoga can rid himself of the “Mark of the Gods” (actually nothing more than a martial arts calligraphy doodle on his stomach) is by losing a fight to Ranma. Fox-Fu…Cat-Fu…Flat-Frog Fu…nothing seems to work against Ryoga! Has Ranma lost his edge for good?

Ranma 1/2 (2-in-1 Edition), Vol. 7: Includes Volumes 13 & 14, by Rumiko Takahashi

About the Author The spotlight on Rumiko Takahashi's career began in 1978 when she won an honorable mention in Shogakukan's prestigious New Comic Artist Contest for Those Selfish Aliens. Later that same year, her boy-meets-alien comedy series, Urusei Yatsura, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday. This phenomenally successful manga series was adapted into anime format and spawned a TV series and half a dozen theatrical-release movies, all incredibly popular in their own right. Takahashi followed up the success of her debut series with one blockbuster hit after another—Maison Ikkoku ran from 1980 to 1987, Ranma ½ from 1987 to 1996, and Inuyasha from 1996 to 2008. Other notable works include Mermaid Saga, Rumic Theater, and One-Pound Gospel. Takahashi won the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award twice in her career, once for Urusei Yatsura in 1981 and the second time for Inuyasha in 2002. A majority of the Takahashi canon has been adapted into other media such as anime, live-action TV series, and film. Takahashi's manga, as well as the other formats her work has been adapted into, have continued to delight generations of fans around the world. Distinguished by her wonderfully endearing characters, Takahashi's work adeptly incorporates a wide variety of elements such as comedy, romance, fantasy, and martial arts. While her series are difficult to pin down into one simple genre, the signature style she has created has come to be known as the "Rumic World." Rumiko Takahashi is an artist who truly represents the very best from the world of manga.

The Little Washer of Sorrows is a collection of short stories that explores what happens when the expected and usual are replaced with elements of the rare and strange. The book's emotional impact is created with strong, richly drawn characters facing universal issues, but in unusual settings. The collection is both dark and comical with engaging plot twists and elements of the macabre as characters attempt to cope with high-stakes melodramas that drift further out of their control. The threat of something sinister lingers beneath the surface in many of Fawcett's stories, as she explores the messy "what ifs?" of life and the ever-present paradox of free will. (2014-09-24)

The Little Washer of Sorrows: and Other Stories, by Katherine Fawcett

Review

NPR Books, March 31, 2015The Little Washer of Sorrows is not what it seems. At first glance, the debut collection of short stories by Canadian author Katherine Fawcett offers funny, sympathetic sketches of characters who might live next door to you: The homemaker who underutilizes her college degree; the aspiring heavy metal musician with delusions of stardom; the aging couple who can barely muster the passion to even bicker anymore.

And it works well on this level alone; Fawcett has a flair for quiet drama and unfussy detail, and her dialogue positively fizzes. Little Washer startles, however, thanks to its commitment to the fantastic. Amid the mundaneness of these 19 contemporary tales, whimsy and weirdness abound. Artificial intelligence lurks in the suburbs. Accountants nurse monsters. Movie stars appear as mirages. If Fawcett's characters actually did live next door to you, your life would be in for some serious upheavals.

Fawcett lets her speculative side run wild. Like fellow fabulist Kelly Link — not to mention forebears such as Donald Barthleme — she finds fertile ground in the fuzzy territory between realism and surrealism. In "BLK MGC," a ripped-from-the-headlines pyramid scheme takes a left turn somewhere near The Twilight Zone; in "The Anniversary Present," an aging Mother Earth is addicted to beauty products while her husband, Father Time, has adulterous feelings for Sister Moon.

Domesticity plays as big a part in Fawcett's story as science fiction, fantasy, and mythology do. The tenderly combative interplay between the married couple in "Lenny and the Polyamphibians" — which only intensifies when a mermaid enters into the equation — is poignantly layered, even as it sparks with snark. The couple in Little Washer's title story, on the other hand, are haunted by the most prosaic of monsters: Bankruptcy. As their estate manager begins to exhibit supernatural qualities, though, the balance of reality gets turned on its side.

Little Washer is playful when it comes to age-old tropes, from android imposters to Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates. But they're still age-old tropes, and the book's one major flaw is an overreliance on clichés, as freshly as they're approached. Luckily Fawcett transcends that with her bright, nimble voice, not to mention her pop culture savvy and eye small, telling details: A hapless high school teacher presides over a class of students whose names all begin T; in purgatory, people love singing Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" at karaoke. It all works at a deeper level than these breezy stories might imply, as does Fawcett's use of technology as a complication for her characters. Alienated spouses use texting to maintain their disconnect; a computer buffering and freezing emphasizes the communication breakdown between teacher and pupils.

Occasionally a story flirts with fabulism without diving headlong into it — and in the case of "Suburban Wolf," it makes for the best bit in the book. Wagg is a part of a gang of semi-feral kids who roam neighborhoods, pack-like and barely civilized. Nothing about their situation is explained, nor does it need to be. It's only important to know that it's Wagg's 15th birthday, and he just received his first kiss, and that ecstatic coming of age isn't going to last long.

Just as Fawcett injects the weird into the mundane, she hides hard, barbed little truths in her otherwise lightweight yarns. "Captcha" might appear to be nothing but a clever spin on The Stepford Wives, but it winds up deftly exploring the nature of monogamy. "Swimming to Jonny Depp" seems like a sweet, silly vignette, but there's a nugget of sadness to the protagonist's middle-age daydreaming. Ultimately, The Little Washer of Sorrows is about epiphanies: their scarcity, their power, and their uncanny ability to make our everyday lives look downright unreal by comparison.

Jason Heller is a senior writer at The A.V. Club and author of the novel Taft 2012.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Lenny learned of Helen's hormonal issues when she accidentally texted him instead of Kirsten. Still no period and fucking hot flash again. This is insane! I'm only 33!!!! 2 young 4 menopause. Then: Oops, wrong person. Disregard. U cant untext your husband. U ok? She didn't reply. That night in bed, he brought it up again. "Listen. About the period thing. Do you think you're pregnant?" "No, dipshit," she said, still facing the wall. "I'm not pregnant." "Then what is it? What's going on? Do you think you're eating too much of that salmon roe? Maybe that's affecting things. You know. In the female department." She hoisted herself up on her elbows, misted her face with the saline spray she kept on the night table, then squinted at him. "I don't know if you've noticed, Lenny, but something is wrong with me. My vagina is drying up. And shrinking. My period stopped two months ago. My legs and feet hurt all the time. Sometimes I feel like my throat is closing. My skin is all weird. I'm losing weight and I'm scared." Lenny felt terrible. He hated seeing her suffer, but he knew exactly what was going on. He raised his hand to touch her cheek and couldn't help wondering if her eyes had always been that far apart or if it was just his imagination. It wasn't as if he didn't care that his wife was becoming aquatic. But what could he do? What could he say? "Maybe you should see a gynecologist." She burst into tears and a bubble came out of her mouth.

I picture the author and her friends on a dock, it’s a summer evening, they’ve had a few, and then the “What if?” conversation starts. In Dire Consequences, there’s a shocking result of momspeak, “Eat your greens.” One of my favorite stories, Jesus on the Candy Bar (what a title!) has the distinct, authentic voice of a teenage girl. Fawcett remembers the awkwardness of adolescence like it was just last summer. Another favorite is The Little Washer of Sorrows. Brilliant! The last line was perfect. I chuckle every time I think about it.The first story in the collection, Captcha made me laugh the most, more of a shake my head, oh my, kind of laugh. Her use of language is exactly what I like to read. Johnny Longsworld’s Third Option has the best image: “Johnny stormed back through the immense lobby looking for a spare seat, fuckity-fucking through his teeth the whole way.”I smell a Giller. And a grilled cheese with hot chocolate. That was in Dire Consequences. Those don’t even go together, but the image is fresh and nostalgic at the same time.I broke my rule of reading only one short story per night. More than once.

When I read a good book I am one of those who can’t let go until I get to the end. Right now I don’t have time for that – so I chose to get a book with short stories. Love it! The stories are quirky and unique – they suck you in right away and the best word I have to describe this book is entertaining. Nothing boring , no skipping chapters… Katherine is a brilliant writer and I highly recommend this book and look forward to more to come!

A brilliant, original collection that with make you smile By Nancy Routley A brilliant, original collection that with make you smile, twitter and laugh out loud. Katherine weaves fantastical, quirky stories, taking unusual often mythical characters and putting them modern day setting with modern day sensibilities. These stories are like nothing you have ever read before so don't be surprised that you gush about them to your friends!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent! By S. Lacey Really enjoyed this one! A great follow up to the first book. I loved finally getting to meet Sophia and Emily's grandmother! She's pretty awesome! I felt bad for Michael, he finally wins Jen's freedom but she chose's to stay in the Realm anyway. I personally think she was very much in love with the male fairy she spent so much time with in the last book (although she never said she was) and that she gave him reasons for staying that she thought would hurt him less (again she never said as much but that's the conclusion I came to from little things leading up to her staying behind).I hope there will be another book and that perhaps Michael will start to see Sophia in a new light. My heart was breaking for her in this book, she always puts other people ahead of her own happiness. She's in love with Michael but she did everything she could to get his wife back and to convince her to return with Michael even as her own heart was breaking in two.Great book and really hope for more in the series!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great, entertaining read. Highly recommend! By S. R. Meisner Shanna Swendson is a wonderful writer with a unique perspective and original plot twists. This is the second book in her "Fairy Tale" series. The madcap adventures of her wonderful characters will keep you interested and turning the pages. My only complaint is that I read too fast. I finish one book in a couple of hours and am then left bereft - wondering what to read next that might be able to compete.I first discovered this author with her Enchanted, Inc. (Katie Chandler) series. If you haven't read them yet, do so immediately. There was a 4 year hiatus between books 4 and 5 in the series and I despaired of every reading another. Lo and behold, in 2012, the fifth book was published. There are now a total of 7 books in the series. I have read all of the titles at least 3 times and enjoyed them every time.
