Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" or "A Dead Man's Dream" is a short story by American author Ambrose Bierce. Originally published by The San Francisco Examiner in 1890, it was first collected in Bierce's 1891 book Tales of Soldiers and Civilians. The story, which is set during the Civil War, is famous for its irregular time sequence and twist ending. Bierce's abandonment of strict linear narration in favor of the internal mind of the protagonist is considered an early example of experimentation with stream of consciousness. It is Bierce's most anthologized story. Set during the American Civil War, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is the story of Peyton Farquhar, a Confederate sympathizer condemned to death by hanging from Owl Creek Bridge. In the first part of the story, a gentleman planter in his mid thirties is standing on a railroad bridge in Alabama. Six military men and a company of infantrymen are present. The man is to be hanged from the bridge. As the man is waiting, he thinks of his wife and children. Then he is distracted by a tremendous noise. He cannot identify this noise, other than that it sounds like the clanging of a blacksmith's hammer on the anvil. He cannot tell if it was far away or nearby. He finds himself apprehensively awaiting each strike, which seem to grow further and further apart. It is revealed that this noise is the ticking of his watch. Then, an escape plan flashes through his mind: "throw off the noose and spring into the stream. By diving I could evade the bullets and, swimming vigorously, take to the woods and get away home." His thoughts stray back to his wife and children. The soldiers drop him down. The story flashes back in time: Peyton Farquhar lives in the South and is a Confederate supporter. He goes out of his way to perform services to support the Confederate cause. One day, a gray-clad soldier appears at his house and tells Farquhar that Union soldiers in the area have been repairing the railroads, including the one over Owl Creek Bridge. Interested, Farquhar asks if it is possible to sabotage the bridge, to which the soldier replies that he could burn it down. When the soldier leaves, it is revealed that he is a Union scout who has lured Farquhar into a trap, as anyone caught interfering with the railroads would face execution. When he is hanged, the rope breaks. Farquhar falls into the water. While underwater, he seems to take little interest in the fact that his hands, which now have a life of their own, are freeing themselves and untying the rope from around his neck. Once he finally reaches the surface, he realizes his senses are superhuman. He can see the individual blades of grass and the colors of bugs on the leaves of trees, despite the fact that he is whirling around in a river. Realizing that the men are shooting at him, he escapes and makes it to dry land. He travels through an uninhabited and seemingly unending forest, attempting to reach his home 30 miles away. During his journey through the day and night, he is fatigued, footsore, and famished, urged on by the thought of his wife and children. He begins experiencing strange physiological events, hearing unusual noises from the wood, and believes he has fallen asleep while walking. He wakes to see his perfectly preserved home, with his beautiful and youthful wife outside. As he runs forward to reach her, he suddenly feels a searing pain in his neck; a white light flashes, and everything goes black. It is revealed that Farquhar never escaped at all; he imagined the entire third part of the story during the time between falling through the bridge and the noose finally breaking his neck.

Henry's "The Gift of the Magi," "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is one of the most widely read American short stories. I still remember a teacher reading it to us in an American Literature class in high school. And like "The Gift of the Magi," there's a twist at the end that turns the story upside down. The story is set in Alabama during the War Between the States. Peyton Farquhar, a middle-aged planter, was about to be hanged by the Yankees for attempting to sabotage a railroad bridge. Even knowing that he was about to die, Farquhar's mind was focused sharply on every detail around him. To say much more would be a spoiler, but suffice to say that most readers will not see what's coming until the very last sentence of the story. The story is worth rereading, and if you somehow got through high school without reading it, go for it.

It's true that there's some problems with the printing but the comment is irrelevant for the book's content.I think that the first volume is a great summary of subjects that junior data scientists must know. It's short and to the point. Also, I being a great believer in Occam's razor: if you managed to explain (or at least to remind) how does an SVM works in 2 pages instead of 20 pages - then you did a good job. The internet (and the library?) is full of details for further research.

If you believe some news stories, the latest iPhone update (iOS 9) is radically different and you should beware of updating! They’re wrong! This book is for both new users of iPhone and those upgrading to the latest update. I’ll walk you through the changes and show you why updating is nothing to be afraid of. The iPhone doesn’t come with a handbook / user guide; this doesn’t mean that you have to buy someone else’s handbook! iPhone does have a handbook! There are three ways to get it: 1. Download it from the Apple iBookstore (it’s free) 2. Get it online by going to manuals.info.apple.com 3. Get it on your phone; if you go to your bookmarked pages on Safari, the last bookmark is for the ‘iPhone User Guide’. So why do you need this book? This book was written for my parents; people who needed to know as much as possible, as quickly as possible. There are people who want to know every single little detail about the iPhone, and you will find that in Apple’s comprehensive manual. If you are like my parents though, new to the iPhone and just want to learn all the basics in about 30 to 60 minutes or an hour that is, then this guide will help you. People who just want to know how to add their contacts, how to take photos, and how to email. It’s not for advanced users, though if you are upgrading from the previous Apple iOS (iOS 8) then you will most probably find it useful. If you are ready to learn read on!

The writing style is rife with grammatical errors By Amazon Customer When my wife and I switched from Android to iPhone recently, I got this book to help get started. I was grossly disappointed. The writing style is rife with grammatical errors. Pages from one section appear in another section. The production was not done well, not to mention the author's ability to write. I suppose some of the points and tips are helpful. Overall, tho, this was a real disappointment. Fortunately, it was not too expensive.

THE CREATION of the world’s preeminent Fantasy Role-Playing Game (FRPG), Dungeons & Dragons, is one of the most fascinating tales to be told in all the shared histories of entertainment, play and game design. Two very different men, David Lance Arneson and Ernest Gary Gygax, undertook an unprecedented collaboration which gifted us — as their shared legacy — with one of the most intriguing games the world has yet experienced. Their game did not just simulate one isolate corner of reality; it dared to encompass the entirety of all realms of adventure, the consensual playground of the human imagination. HAWK & MOOR tells the story of Dave and Gary, and the many other people whose efforts gave first life to the game we know and love today. Arneson had spectacular ideas, but Gygax knew how to refine them. Collaboration soon turned to conflict as Arneson believed his game was being taken from him, and Gygax crystallized systems where incomprehensible riddles had stood before. Both men were creative geniuses, but the game they created from Gygax’s Chainmail (1971) was the end result not only of their teamwork, but also of their clashes and disagreements. HAWK & MOOR Book V: Age of Glory focuses on the great generative schism, in which Original Dungeons & Dragons grew along two entirely new evolutionary paths: Basic and Advanced. Basic D&D would be exemplified by Dr. J. Eric Holmes’s edit of the Basic Set, while Advanced D&D would make its monumental debut with the release of Gygax’s epic bestiary, the Monster Manual. Beyond these great events Book V also explores the burgeoning FRPG landscape of 1977, providing details on the release of Traveller, the Snit games of Tom Wham, Ogre, Elric, The Arduin Grimoire, the Manual of Aurania, the Wilderlands of High Fantasy, Tegel Manor, Star Empires, White Dwarf, Warlocks & Warriors, the Dungeon Hobby Shop dungeon, the Quest for the Teeth of Barkash-Nour, the Rankin & Bass film version of The Hobbit, and much more. This volume also features details on Origins III, the unforgettable Gen Con X at the Playboy Club, and interlude essays which explore the TSR Metamorphosis Alpha campaign, the development and origins of Gamma World, and the fantastic Wormy cartoons created by David A. Trampier. Details are also provided on the Saul Zaentz / Tolkien Enterprises cease and desist predicament. An elaborate chronology of these and many other events from 1977 is included as an appendix for easy reference. Many books tell the tale of the origins and early years of Dungeons & Dragons, but Book V is by far the most detailed history for the formative year of 1977, when TSR became the undisputed champion of the sphere of role-playing games. This information has never before been compiled to this level of detail. HAWK & MOOR Book Five: Age of Glory includes 71,700 words on over 200 pages, supported by 445 footnotes and annotations. Prepare yourself, take up torch and sword. Come along and experience an unprecedented journey into the Golden Age!

I need more than a 40 minute read. I really like the characters, and the story xcept for the beginning of book 5 (moms nightmare-scarry). You really need to quit your job and write full time! (;-). I like how the characters are developing, the storyline is solid and on the horizon new weasels. The strong women are still strong, and both are fearless and gentle at the same time. I need to know if Thom makes it to where he is headed and does he find Anna? So many questions and waiting patiently for so many answers. I am a fan of this author and when he publishes these shorts into a book I will purchase it. It will be in my bookcase with other books that I like to reread now and then.

If you’ve read and enjoyed episodes 1-3, you’ll undoubtedly enjoy this new chapter in Thom’s journey. I don’t think I’m spoiling anything by mentioning that the fifth episode ties some things up. So read on—episode 4 awaits!

About the Author James H. Schmitz was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1911 of American parents. He spent the years of the First World War in the United States, then went back to Germany to complete his schooling. Aside from several trips to the United States, he lived in Germany until 1938, returning to America with the outbreak of World War II. He sold his first story, "Greenface," to the now-legendary fantasy magazine Unknown Worlds, shortly before Pearl Harbor, but by the time it was published, he was flying with an Army Air Corps group as an aerial photographer in the Southern Pacific Theater. In 1949, he began publishing his "Agent of Vega" series in the leading SF magazine, Astounding (later renamed Analog), and was one of that magazine's most popular contributors over the next three decades, introducing the memorable heroines Telzey Amberdon and Trigger Argee, leading protagonists in his massive "Federation of the Hub" series. He died in 1981.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Liked, not loved. By Jason76 I really like this series overall, and this was a good volume in the series. I will say that of the 3 books, this was probably my least favorite. Not that it was bad, just not as good. Starting out positive, the main characters are very strong. They are well defined and have distinct personalities all their own. I like the world the author has created and I hope their are many books to come from this series. There were some issues I had with this book. I felt the "misunderstandings" in the relationship between the Lexi and Reece dragged on too long. It does seem like they have turned a corner in this book, but it was at the very end, so it didn't have quite the impact I was expecting. Also, several times throughout the book Lexi is being captured by the bad guys by being frozen in place by their powers. It got really repetitive and annoying. It made it seem like Lexi is pretty much useless unless she is using a gun. I know she is still new to the squad, but I would like to see her make some improvements in her ability to hold her own in a fight. I'm not a big fan of stories where characters are constantly in trouble, and only seem to get out of it by sheer luck.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! By Lovemuffins I'm quickly becoming obsessed with this series. I liked Diem's Mortis series, although it got kind of far out there by the end for me (I'm hoping this one doesn't do the same, because right now it's wonderful in its realism despite the fact that it's a supernatural book), but I'm LOVING this series. Lexi is such a great heroine. She's keeping quiet about some things that she probably shouldn't, but she's young so it's understandable. You should definitely read the first 2 books, which are also fantastic, before reading this one. I think it would work as a standalone, but it wouldn't be nearly as satisfying, and some parts might be confusing. In this installment, we get more of Lexi's mom, more of Lexi's dad, more of Lexi developing some of her powers (and her special abilities vs. the rest of the shifters TOTALLY makes sense since she's got both shifter and vampire influences warring inside of her at this point), more of Lexi and Reece's wonderful sexual tension, more of the team being funny and enjoyable, and some more drama and action as well. I don't want to give too much away, but suffice to say, the stuff with the coven was REALLY fascinating and I loved that Lexi was front and center for the action this time. She's developing both as a character and a team members. The relationship between Reece and Lexi takes a step forward, which was AWESOME. I'm sure they'll still have their issues to work out, but I think Diem had perfect timing with not allowing their current stand off to get too angsty before providing a bit of resolution. The progress that the team has in coming together is AWESOME. I also really love that Diem doesn't hold back on the human reaction to the shifter squad. There's a lot of little things that keep this series grounded in reality, which is important to making the supernatural stuff believable, and the human side characters are a huge part of that. So are Lexi's worries and also her lack of worrying and then her subsequent worrying about her lack of worrying. Love it.My one complaint is that out of a group of bad guys, only ONE bad guy manages to get away, and of course it's the one bad guy that they need to kill the most. That made me roll my eyes a little bit, because it seemed unbelievable that they would be able to take out an entire group of baddies, but the most important one manages to escape. I would have liked it better if a few of the bad guys had managed to get away (especially since they were heavily outnumbered), which could have made it confusing in future books while they were trying to track down the bad guy that they really need to off. But seriously, that's so freaking neat-picky on my part that there's no way I'm going to downgrade on stars for this book over ti, because this book was AWESOME.If you like New Adult supernatural, or even just supernatural and aren't opposed to trying some new adult in the genre, this is definitely a great series to try. It's smart, it's funny, the romance is being handled wonderfully as are the characters and the plots, and it's just all around enjoyable with just enough drama, conflict and action to keep you on the edge of your seat.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fresh and exciting By I taylor Dark Coven is the third book in the Shifter Squad series and I am totally hooked. Lexi is strong, both emotionally and physically, but her strengths are put to the test when her vampire mother tries to send her to the dark side. Lexi must use the support of the pack around her if she is to survive. The coven is intent on destroying Lexi as she tries to stop their murdering sacrifices but she finds allies in the most unexpected places. Her relationship with Reece is tricky; on the one hand, he is in her head and knows her emotions and thoughts the moment she has them, but on the other hand their bond has taken away any privacy she might have enjoyed. This series is exceptionally well written and keeps the suspense going even as the storyline changes. If you have time to read one series this year, then I recommend that it is this one.

From New York Times And USA Today Bestselling Paranormal Romance Author, HP Mallory, Comes The Bryn and Sinjin Series!“H.P. Mallory has a quick wit, a fresh voice, and a clever way with words. If you like Charlaine Harris, you’ll love H.P. Mallory!” ~ Larissa Ione, New York Times Bestselling Fantasy Romance AuthorIf you like your books steamy (this is an adult paranormal romance, not for kids or teens!) read on!THE SCENT is the second book in the Bryn and Sinjin series. When Bryn’s loyalty to her own people is tested, the decision she makes will change the course of her life forever…Truth be told, Bryn isn’t really sure where her loyalties lie. Of one thing she’s sure, though, is that her fraternal twin sister, Jolie, who also happens to be the Queen of the Underworld, should be her sworn enemy. But after spending months with Jolie, Bryn can’t deny the fact that she genuinely cares for her sister, much though she shouldn’t. If it weren’t maddening enough that her relationship with Jolie is anything but black and white, then there’s Sinjin.Cool, calm and calculated, Sinjin Sinclair is everything Bryn imagines she should find reprehensible in a man. First of all, he’s a master vampire and all vampires, in Bryn’s mind, are nothing more than bloodsucking parasites. Secondly, his unflagging cockiness when paired with his boyish charm is enough to irritate any sensible woman. Mostly, though, it’s Sinjin’s unapologetic sexuality that Bryn finds extremely off-putting…and, well, somewhat entertaining and possibly even exhilarating...After Bryn purposely botches her leader’s attack on Jolie, Bryn finds herself returned to her old life, a life she thought she’d wanted. But the old adage, “be careful what you wish for because you might get it,” will take on new meaning once she finds herself playing hostage to her own people. Mallory's writing, but I cannot get past the, basically, gang rape and the unbelievable feelings of sexual desire that came afterwards. No woman that goes through that would be having sexual desires so soon afterwards, least of all, putting up with a very insensitive guy that keeps pressuring her to narrate this horrible experience, only to then propose to become her lover. Unbelievable! and not in a good way.I have to admit this book ruined a potentially fun series for me. I now hate Sinjin because he is clueless and insensitive, and cannot relate to Bryn at all. Another issue worth mentioning is the shortness of the book; I remember the Jolie Wilkins books and they used to be in fact books. But the Bryn series consists of short, incomplete, novellas. Very disappointing!

It should have just been combined with the first short book of the series to make one book. I hope of of my favorite authors hasn't gotten greedy on us.Of course, I am happy at the continuation of the story. Sadly, it ends there. The 3 weeks of gang rape on the story narrator hardly fits with the tone of the Jolie Wilkins novels or the first book in this series. Also, the absolutely atrocious way the author deals with the aftermath of her 3 weeks of gang rape is appalling. Within a couple days of her escaping, she is forced to tell her previous romantic interest all the gory details in a dive bar bathroom. Then he offers to make it better, by showing her the right way to make love, even though he can not love her.I'm shocked & disappointed that such awful writing has come from a female author, an author, who up until now, has been a great writer. I only hope she does better by rape victims in the future, or not write about a subject, that she obviously has no understanding of.

Hosman This second book in the Bryn and Sinjin series picks up right where the first book left off and covers about three weeks in Bryn's life. I enjoyed reading the story, but it felt more like I was reading a YA novel. For some reason, I remember the Jolie books being ... Better. This was more like a novella than the novels I enjoy reading. It's entirely possible that I'm misremembering the previous books because I didn't start reading them until they had all been released. I read them all back to back, so I felt like I got the whole story. I didn't feel like this book moved the plot forward in any significant way, which was disappointing. Additionally, I HATE cliffhangers - and this totally ended in one.I appreciate that the author takes the time to have the book edited and published a polished story, I just wish that it hasn't ended just as something was starting to happen.Despite that, I'll keep reading the series. I'm a fan of the characters, but I'll probably wait till a few more books are published before I pick them up again.

“I’ve dealt with superheroes long enough to know that they only exist in their own minds. Their masks keep them from seeing how far below their own standards they are.” One month later, the New York Guardians must rebuild their home and reputation, and the Prospects have a new lineup of trainees with more good intentions than powers. Meanwhile, a spymaster from a forgotten war raises a secret army of monsters to reshape the nation in his vision. In a world where heroes mask their intentions more than their faces and villains aren’t always bad guys, an honest but oblivious government agent, a former model who is above-average at everything, a failed actor with the ability to make light, a mutant as durable and almost as slow as a rock, and a somewhat-reformed villainess must find clues from the past to save the future.

The second Prospects book expands the cast, bringing the portion of the made-for-tv team that stepped up and acted like actual heroes into the fold. This expansion isn't particularly beneficial, given that we didnt have all that much time with these characters in the first book (i.e. we dont really know these characters at the start of the book). Moreover, ALL of the characters, old and new, have problems, and all get pages. Insecurities about weight, about powers, about relationships and the like. Not a single well adjusted character to be found given that even good ole Agent Farrel suffers from continuing marital problems. So its a bit hard to settle into this second book and get comfortable, at least at first. The proofreading errors were a bit of a distraction at times (this may be improved by the time you read this -- the author mentioned he would address the issue.)The "train the misfits" plot that worked fairly well in volume one is absent here. Instead, the heroes get involved with a super villain through a chance discovery, and gradually learn what it going on while tangling with the villain. While this plot is perhaps a little overly comic-bookie, the real difficulty is that without the concreteness of the training, this plot is one of the two major drivers of the story, and I'm not sure its quite up to the task. The other main driver of the book is the characters, all of whom are struggling with various personal demons and insecurities. Unfortunately, there are now, in this second book, so many separate characters with screen time that its a little difficult to get terribly involved with any of them -- i.e., there are so many different mini-story arcs for the various characters that it distracts from the flow of the story at times. The Prospects is not A Game of Thrones, and having so many different characters with separate stories in the context of this much shorter and simpler story, doesnt fully work.Conclusion. The second Prospects book passed the time and was a mostly enjoyable read, but tighter editing and greater focus would have helped the book considerably.

While there are some grammar errors and a few irritating quirks with the writing style, it still turns out to be a good story. The characters are realistic and the reasoning for the decisions on both sides is flawed, which makes it a little more entertaining. Overall I'd say that I enjoyed it.

Life as a New Hire is a multi-volume saga about the journey of intern Cáel Nyilas through his 84 day internship at Havenstone Commercial Investments. Volume I: 43,000 +words Cáel Nyilas’ back story: At the start of my senior year at Thornton Fractional North High School in Calumet City, Illinois, I was a motherless loser. I didn’t care about anything, lived like a slob. I was on course to graduate in the top 50% of my class The first week of school, the perfect girl, Cameron Sanders, caught her boyfriend cheating on her. Gripped by a bout of uncontrolled testosterone poisoning, I found her walking with her clique of the super-popular girls and professed my love for her. She publicly humiliated me then cavalierly dismissed my quivering form. That night my widower Father found me despondently watching PBS. He didn't ask me for the details. He asked me ‘what was I going to do about it’. Without using those precise words, he told me that I had no one else to blame for my circumstances but me. I also could be the one who changed my fate; me and me alone. That night, my Father started me on a physical training regimen ~ weights and running. I threw myself into my studies. That first month, I thought I’d die. I lost weight, firmed up and raised my GPA enough to personally impress my English teacher. He helped me get a scholarship to a small college in rural New England. I devoted myself to my physical and academic future. I was busy training my mind for the next challenge, my body for the next benchmark and building my confidence to the point that I believed I could do anything, just like my Father said I could. I went to college a wide-eyed, virginal, guileless boy who thought he could do anything. I graduated a very different young man – a seasoned, sexually proficient, relentless womanizer who knew I could have any woman I wished. Spring, Post Graduation Five young men, all recent graduates, landed dream jobs with an International Fortune 500 Corporation. They are the first male interns ever at Havenstone Commercial Investments. Havenstone Commercial Investments has completed a long legal proceeding over their accused discriminatory policies against males, thus the new internships. Unknown to the five interns, Havenstone Commercial Investments is concealing criminal and deadly secrets in their Boardroom. Cáel Nyilas, from a blue collar background and graduate from obscure Bolingbrook College in New Hampshire joins with four elitist frat rats earning a quarter million a year. Chinese-American Brian Fung from Harvard, blue blood Trent Grant from Carnegie-Melon, African-American Khalid Adzharia from MIT and Salvadoran-American Felix Melena from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor; all had far better academic pedigrees than Cáel, nicer toys, and better looking suits. The one thing all five had in common? They were all freaking gorgeous; not cultured, handsome, or attractive to the opposite sex, every one of them would be hit on in a nightclub in under five minutes unless there was a significant other hanging all over them. For the first 84 days, corporate policy states Havenstone employees and interns are forbidden sexual liaisons with each other; punishable by fines, job transfers and termination of contract. Havenstone policy means all Havenstone women are unavailable; Cáel a seasoned seducer, sexually proficient and a relentless womanizer will have to look outside for bed partners. A great lover but a lousy boyfriend no female between 18 and 65 was immune from his attentions. His girlfriends’ sisters, aunts or mothers were targets for his seductive talent. Not only could guys not trust him with their girlfriends, girlfriends can't trust their girl friends around Cáel either. With over 200 ex-girlfriends, all of whom he has betrayed in some manner, many who still want to cause him some level of pain, brought about by his insatiable sexual attraction for every woman he meets between 18 and 65, what could go wrong?

This is a really amusing storyline. I'm not a huge fan of explicit sex scenes but I just skim that to get back to the story. Keep up the great work, James!

Smart Erotic Action Thriller By Richard Wills I have purchased and read all of the first six volumes of this series and the glossary of characters and extra information. I am placing my customer review here to suggest that you should purchase as much of the set as possible and read in methodical consecutive order. I found that method really increased my enjoyment of the storyline. In addition it made it easier to track a multitude of story-arcs and plot developments.I can honestly express enthusiasm for this authors work as a promising monumental achievement of the Smart Erotic Action thriller.

A MYSTERIOUS KILLING After years of waging a secret war against the supernatural, Marley Jacobs put away her wooden stakes and silver bullets, then turned her back on violence. She declared Seattle, her city, a safe zone for everyone, living and undead. There would be no more preternatural murder under her watch. But waging peace can make as many enemies as waging war, and when Marley's nephew turns up dead in circumstances suspiciously like a vampire feeding, she must look into it. Is there a new arrival in town? Is someone trying to destroy her fragile truce? Or was her nephew murdered because he was, quite frankly, a complete tool? As Marley investigates her nephew's death, she discovers he had been secretly dabbling in the supernatural himself. What, exactly, had he been up to, and who had he been doing it with? More importantly, does it threaten the peace she has worked so hard to create? (Spoiler: yeah, it absolutely does.)

The author's described it as a pacifist urban fantasy, full of diplomacy, trickery and thoughtfulness and I have to agree. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, and I'll say the end delivers a plot twist I'd have never expected given the tropes of urban fantasy. It leaves me wanting more and I hope I can find more books out there like this. So, what did I like? The characters. Marley and Al are a blast. Marley as the seen it all former hunter of the super natural. Al as her mundane nephew back from Afghanistan on a medical discharge. Also, the opposition. Because they live up to the old saw about the villains being heroes in their own heads. And I felt sympathy for a vampire and a werewolf. The plot. Its fairly twisty, but not outrageously so.The concepts. A sanctuary city for the supernatural. Vampire rest homes. The challenges of vampirism. How to deal with a werewolf.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A refreshingly unique take on the urban fantasy genre By David R. Rich "A Key, An Egg, An Unfortunate Remark" is a remarkable book containing many remarkable things: trolls, demons, vampires, ghosts, werewolves, a sexagenarian character who isn't automatically written as a bumbling technophobe, and much more.I was a little worried, with the release scheduled so close after the Great Way Trilogy, that this book would be an afterthought — prolificness often fills me with a sense of dread in that regard. However, I'm pleased to say that nothing could be further from the case here. Having had the benefit of ripping my way through Connolly's oeuvre in a relatively short time, it's apparent that what he's doing here is a natural evolution of what he's been doing all along. The result is a book that simultaneously feels very much its own thing and a natural growth of what's come before, a spiritual successor to Twenty Palaces and The Great Way that is at the same time wholly unlike either. The book is a delight from the first page to the last. If you're worried that a pacifist urban fantasy will inevitably be boring and unengaging, rest assured that a peaceful resolution is far more challenging than a violent one. Violence is direct; it gets things done, and done quickly. Peace requires subtlety, forethought, cleverness, and a healthy dose of outright chicanery. The book is also an urban fantasy mystery that takes the "mystery" part as more than an afterthought to be resolved deus ex machina in the last few pages. If it were merely character-driven, that would be enough, because the characters are wonderful, but there really is plenty of plot here, even without the casual body count endemic to the genre. In fact, the story succeeds so well that it makes the sarcastic-antihero-coldly-wading-through-the-corpses-of-his-enemies sort of urban fantasy feel lazy and uninteresting by comparison. The characters, however, are definitely the best part. Connolly has a real talent for making even those with the tiniest parts to play feel well-rounded, fully realized, and intriguing, an ability he puts to great use as Marley and Albert go through a whirlwind grand tour of the supernatural. There may only be snippets of any given flavor of supernatural beastie, but a snippet goes a long way when the author has interesting things to say and interesting characters to say them with. Connolly cuts through the bulls*** at the heart of the mythology with a remarkable economy, focusing on the humanity and tragedy of each creature in a way that lays bare the flaws in our thinking about them. And Marley, of course, is our guide for all of this. She understands and empathizes because she has bothered to learn. She is a phenomenal pacifist protagonist, full of both empathy and steel resolve in equal parts, not above bribery or trickery or threats to maintain the shaky peace she's built. Demographically, Marley is such an unlikely lead that you can't help but think she's a nose-thumbing at the genre prescriptivists who "helpfully" felt the need to diagnose the perceived flaws in Connolly's early work. It would be easy for such a character to fall comfortably into some sort of wise crone super-character trope, but she never does; she's remarkably human, vulnerable, and self-aware underneath her eccentricities and skill, and the moments where that humanity peeks through are among the best in the book. For those critical of the Twenty Palaces books for their in media res approach to worldbuilding, you'll be pleased to note that Albert serves as our ingenue tourguide, asking many of the same expository questions we would in his shoes. For those who, like me, rather appreciated Twenty Palace's Ray Lilly's discomfort in a world he didn't fully understand, rest assured that the exposition that's here doesn't slow things down and leaves plenty unanswered, often in fact raising more questions than it answers. You get a sense of a much bigger, much more complicated world, but you never feel adrift or apart from it. It's the same sort of just-in-time exposition Connolly employed in The Great Way, and it really is expertly done. It also helps that Albert is well-developed enough to stand on his own, because, let's face it, Marley is going to upstage pretty much anyone you pair her with. Albert's development, complete with the stumbles and triumphs along the way, is a delight to read. There are a few quibbles here and there. The copyediting isn't perfect, though it's rarely more than an occasional repeated or omitted word. Marley and Albert's investigation leads them to meet an enormous cast of side characters and I sometimes had to flip back a chapter or two to remind myself who one of the smaller players was. And the climax and resolution, while certainly enjoyable and unexpected, does leave a few threads of the plot in unresolved shambles. All told, however, "A Key, An Egg, An Unfortunate Remark" is an astonishingly unique take on a genre that has a tendency to suffocate in its own formula, with novel and thoughtful takes on all of the established conventions and populated by memorable characters unlike any I've read before. It would be easy for such a book to come off like an experiment, a writer's exercise more than a reader's indulgence, but it's also a ripping good story well told. It is, by turns, smart, funny, thought-provoking, and touching, and remains engaging and fresh throughout.

Well worth reading for anyone who enjoys urban fantasy By Max Kaehn Urban fantasy usually comes with snarling showdowns between supernatural bad guys, often with big magical fireworks. This is the first one I’ve ever seen where the protagonist— an elderly woman with modest magical talents— is committed to solving problems without violence and has to work very subtly. The story is driven by a good whodunnit mystery that gradually unravels bigger and bigger problems, all the while giving us a tour of this version of a Seattle with supernatural hijinks happening behind the scenes. Overall, a good story and well worth reading for the novelty value for anyone who enjoys urban fantasy. It’s self-published (through Kickstarter) and has some rough bits that I think could have used another pass with a reading group and/or editor.
