The writing was smooth (although I'd be happy to never see the word "p'raps" again) and did not detract from the story. Except for a single fatal flaw, I liked most of the characters. The plot was a little predictable but not unforgivably so. I liked the setting. Other than the fact that it was a wizard living in a modern day American city, I didn't think it was anything like the Dresden Files but I liked the idea of a mage's secret identity being a professor of the Occult teaching at a University. We didn't see enough of how the magic works for me to form an opinion but I actually prefer a "reveal as you go" style to an information dump.So why, you might ask, if there were so many good things about the story, did you give it only 2 stars?The characters were all stupid. I wish I could think of a way to put that with a little more finesse but nothing seems to come to mind. This story is what TV Tropes refers to as an idiot plot. If Stone or Ethan had been any less stupid, it would have been a short story. For that matter if the villains had been any less stupid, it would have been a short story. I am not talking about a single instance but over and over and over again throughout the book. Ethan's stupidity can be at least partially explained by an combination of hormones, weed, alcohol and magic. There was no good explanation for Stone's continued lack of good sense. I could explain away a mistake or two but it never ended. By the end I had to force myself to finish the book afraid that I was losing I Q points just by reading it. It was like Inspector Clouseau except that it wasn't funny.I could go into much greater detail on this point but only by revealing relevant plot bits for examples. The main characters were a bit thinly drawn but I figured part of that was just leaving some room for more development as the series progresses. The villains were pretty two dimensional.In spite of my problems with the story I will probably at least read the beginning of the next book before making up my mind. Although the problems were serious with this one they are easily correctable and I do think the world the author has created has the potential to be good.

Braswell Not a bad addition to the urban fantasy genre, but not a great one either. I liked the story overall, but had a hard time caring much about the characters. One thing I couldn't understand was why none of the characters had a cell phone. Nowhere that I noticed did the author state that the book takes place in the 80's or 90's. So, I kept wondering why they kept leaving voice messages on answering machines for each other. And it happened multiple times. I will say the best part for me was the ending. The author did the unexpected. Had I been more invested in the characters, it might have been even more profound. I'll probably give the next book in the series a chance to see if the author can improve this. A lot of people compare it to the Dresden series, and I can see why. And hopefully it will be like that series, where the first book was so-so, but continued to get better and better.

King, who has a couple of other books under her belt. I know, I know, you read "urban fantasy" and see it is a newish author and groan. But wait! This book absolutely reads as if written by an experienced wordsmith. Ms King makes none of the mistakes or stumbles of a new author. This book is professionally penned (and edited).Our Protagonist is Alastair Stone (hence "Stone and a Hard Place" ) a professor of Occult studies at a college in the San Francisco bay area, who is also a pretty powerful Mage...self described as "pale grey" instead of White or Black. An interesting change from most series is that Professor Stone is engaged in a loving monogamous relationship, which seems to be nearly nonexistent in Urban Fantasy.Stone has just been pressured into taking a troubled new apprentice mage, and at the same time is asked to look into a old haunted house- a house which is quite a bit like the Winchester Mystery house in size and age. Besides the house, the book is well sprinkled with geek and local color references. Good characterization, too.I am reminded of Jim Butcher here- not that R.L. King is quite in his league....yet. Still. the feel is there. Darker than most Urban Fantasy, not quite horror, but with a touch of Lovecraftian. I would like to seem more magical action happening, that took a while to show up. Otherwise, very readable, and a must read for fans of Urban fantasy.4 & 1/2 stars. I am looking forward to the next.
