With computer hacking attacks making headline news on a frequent occasion, learning ethical hacking has become a priority for those tasked with defending their networks. But in the sea of training material it is hard to find effectual training using the latest tools and techniques. In “Intermediate Security Testing with Kali Linux 2”, you will learn how hackers find out information about your systems, locate weaknesses in your security and how they gain access to your devices.

This hands-on, step by step learning book doesn’t dwell on the theory of security, but instead walks you through implementing and using the latest security tools that are included in the most popular computer security testing platform, Kali Linux 2.

This book takes off were my first Basic book ends, showing you what has changed in the latest version of Kali Linux. We then cover putting together a penetration testing lab using Windows and Linux based systems.

Next we cover in-depth ways to use Metasploit, by seeing the latest techniques to create backdoor shells and bypassing anti-virus. We also cover automating Metasploit, including scripting based attacks using both Railgun and PowerShell.

In the web application section we cover many of the tools and techniques used against websites. Over 30 tools are covered ranging from scanning to exploiting, including the ever popular BurpSuite.

In the Attacking Smart Devices section we will see how to create virtual phones or tablets, getting remote shells on Android devices and how Wi-Fi and Man-in-The Middle attacks work against smart devices.

Lastly, the book has an entire section of using computer security tools for forensics, an Internet of Things section and an entire chapter devoted to defending your systems.

The new OS has a great interface with very easy to use menus. Much easier to use than the original Kali OS.Covers the main security tools for the topic in depth and provides basic coverage for many of the secondary tools. My teenage daughter gave it a once over as she is developing an interest in security and she said it was very readable and informative, even for a n00b.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended! Lots of great info, and learning resources. By Brian Great follow up to the first book! Very helpful info for the switch from kali 1.0.9 to kali 2.0. I also love how the book is actually a book, too many other security focused books are more like brochures and can't even keep quality material for 200 pages. This book is 470 pages, and all relevant information and material.

I especially liked the sections dealing with obtaining, filtering & manipulating data. Though some of this information can be found in various R package vignettes, much of it, including useful tips, is all in one place here. For example, I found the section on using functions from the R package "dplyr" useful for merging data sets. The reader of this book might do well to follow-up this volume with Hadley Wickham’s "Advanced R". I also enjoyed the treatment given to importing the corpus for text analysis. Python generally seems to be a bit easier to navigate for the pre-processing step when performing text analytics. This book made conducting the process in R much easier for me.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Pass By Dimitri Shvorob Packt's conveyor is not slowing down: only three months ago I surveyed their fresh crop of "data science with R" offerings"Mastering Predictive Analytics with R" by Forte, £32.99"Mastering Machine Learning with R" by Lesmeister, £34.99"R Data Analysis Cookbook" by Viswanathan and Viswanathan, £29.99"Machine Learning with R Cookbook" by Yu-Wei, £30.99and now there are four more:"Unsupervised Learning with R" by Pacheco, £25.99"Data Analysis with R" by Fischetti, £34.99"Learning Predictive Analytics with R" by Mayor, £31.99"Mastering Data Analysis with R" by Daroczi, £34.99Fischetti's book is idiosyncratic but good - that one, plus the titles by Forte and Lantz, are the only Packt offerings I like - Pacheco's and Mayor's are bad.Daroczi's is ... also bad. The book starts out with unpolished but original, obviously-speaking-from-experience and useful survey of data-access (think databases, files and URLs) and data-manipulation tools (think "sqldf", "plyr" and "data.table" packages). If all of the book's content were like that, I would give it four stars in a jiffy. Unfortunately, after a hundred pages, attention moves from data manipulation to modeling, and here "Mastering Data Analysis with R" loses edge, and joins the uninspiring ranks of low-quality, superficial "data science lite" books from Packt. Forte and Lantz are two Packt authors who have done this far, far better; outside of Packt's hit-and-miss-and-miss-and-miss-and-miss universe, you have high-quality R-illustrated books by Witten et al. (that's "Introduction to Statistical Learning"), or by Kabacoff, or by Crowley. Finally, the book mentions data visualization; here, the relevant content includes a look at GIS - OK, these several pages are duly noted, but I think I could find as much over a Google session - and a look at "igraph" package, which struck me as equally low-value-added.Summing up, I see a hundred interesting pages, and two hundred uninteresting ones. The book is hard to recommend.PS. If you see any odd things in "Comments", that's probably the psycho who has spent days posting offensive comments to my reviews - only for them to be deleted by Amazon - after I criticized an iffy Packt book promoted with questionable five-star reviews. ("R Machine Learning By Example" by Bali and Sarkar, if you are wondering). As long as you know that his "Dimitri Shvorob" is fake, there isn't much harm he can do.

The third book in the four-book Summer King Chronicles. A voice in the wind sings on . . . Shard is a gryfon entrusted with a great responsibility. A dragon of the Sunland has left her newborn kit to his care, and now Shard has difficult decisions to make about how best to keep the swiftly growing dragonet safe, while remaining true to his own destiny and the prophecy of the Summer King. He sets out to return the dragonet to his kin in the Sunland and find help for his own quest, but his hope for making wise and benevolent allies is quickly replaced with the reality of cold, mistrustful dragons who want nothing to do with gryfons, Shard, or his wars in warmer lands. In the Silver Isles, the warrior gryfon Caj sets out on a dangerous hunt for his mad wingbrother, Sverin, once the mighty Red King. The safety of the pride, and in the end, Caj's life, may depend on his success or failure. Meanwhile, Shard's wingbrother Kjorn seeks to find him and reconcile, and his quest will take him across the land that was once his birthright and into the heart of tricky alliances, enmities, and the ever-looming threat of the Voiceless, fear-mongering wyrms. The Song of the Summer King promises that one will rise higher, one will see farther, and his wing beats will part the storm . . . but as Shard learns more of the world and the tangled threads of fate, he begins to fear that no one can part the storm of growing hatred and fear--not even a Summer King. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Added to the "Recommended Reading" list for the Norton Award by members of the SFWA.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. All the Payoff, It is Delicious By M. Hogarth Owen gets better with every succeeding book, and this book in particular rewards the reader. If Book 1 was an introduction, and Book 2 was a leisurely set-up, Book 3 at last begins to lead us through some of the payoffs that we've been eagerly awaiting since the conflict was broached in the first pages of Song of the Summer King. We get to watch characters we've grown to love finally do all the things we've been hoping they would do, and though by the end of this novel there's still work to be done we can put it down having felt satisfied by all the things that have already happened--they stand as promises that Owen has fulfilled, and so we are confident that she'll deliver in the final episode. For those of you who finished Book 2 and hit a brick wall and said 'WHERE'S THE REST', A Shard of Sun finally starts handing it over, and it is magnificent. If you enjoyed the first two books and were concerned that Owen might not be able to knit all her many separate threads together satisfactorily, rest easy. She's doing fine. You are in good hands!Eagerly awaiting Book 4. Write faster, Gryfess!

One of the best books you will ever read By Nimure I received an ARC copy for an honest review.I've been waiting to review this for what feels like waaay too long.Introducing Book 3 of the Song of the Summer King chronicles, by Jess Owen.First off, I want to take a moment to appreciate the once more out-of-this-world cover art done by Jennifer Miller. It's really, really fantastic. *drools*Okay, on with the review.I am writing this review in return for an ARC copy that Jess Owen was kind enough to send me. There will be no spoilers in this review, but probably much raving because, lets face it, I really LOVE these books.A Shard of Sun picks up not long after Skyfire ends, with Shard now having to raise the young Sunland dragon Hikaru as well as preform his "duties" as the Summer King. I say "duties" but mostly it's Shard's quest to discover answers to the questions that both the previous books left us with. What is the real story behind the dragons? And Kjar? And the Aesir? And most importantly, WHAT HAPPENED TO STIGR?!?!?!A Shard of Sun will resist answering all of these right away, building tension and angst until I was basically eating my own fingernails.Who am I kidding? That happens a lot.But still! I could not stop, could not resist Owen's page turning masterpiece as I awaited the answers to all the things I did not know. The pacing in this novel is incredible. It's edge-of-your-seat riveting, but not exhausting. Even the "uneventful" moments where nothing big happens, are not boring.Jess Owen has truly honed her craft and, if possible, made writing even more of an art form than it already was. I eagerly await the last book, book 4, and anything else she desires to write. I would also recommend this book to anyone.Again. Who am I kidding? I've spammed by facebook friends, coworkers, and harassed random strangers on the street.Buy and read these books!!! You're missing out on a world of adventure and a truly wondrous story if you don't.

By Ms. Dominique Goodall I received a copy of this in return for an honest review.Shard is a gryfon entrusted with a great responsibility. It brings you deeper into the Silver Isles and even Sunland. You learn more about the deepest secrets of Sverin...about the Dragons and the wyrms. Besieged by darkness, can Shard truly do as he promises, and fly high? Kjorn is seeking Shard in the Sunland, with the Nameless again named. Shard is the only one who can bring together all the species - gryfon, eagle, painted dog. They gather in his name, in his honour. When it comes down to it, will Shard find his path through the stars? There is even an amazing twist for certain characters. The wolves of the Silver Isles feature in this book more than in Sunfire. Catori, my personal favorite, shows herself briefly, but I love the way that Jess Owen has managed to advance the storyline without sacrificing the characters that I personally have come to love. The dragons are revealed to be entirely different to what you expect - there is a unique slant on them that I cannot help but love.If I could, this would receive 10/10, but for now, 5/5 will suffice! Get the rest of these books as soon as you can - I'm waiting eagerly for the next book already!

Simply unforgettable…and wildly dangerous.

Manhattan Ten, Book 4

Angelina Márquez’s perfect memory recall makes her ideally suited to manage the Manhattan Ten superhero crew, a task that sometimes borders on insanity. Still, the price of being everything to everyone is high.

A recruiting trip to UCLA does nothing to cure her chronic insomnia. Intel indicates someone in the L.A. Pack may be harboring anti-super sentiment. On top of that, she’s sent to retrieve a straight-out-of-the-jungle panther shifter being detained at LAX.

Tequani was looking forward to visiting his hero brother, but when civilization unexpectedly brings out his claws, he’s court-ordered to stick with Angel while his paws are on U.S. soil. He’s fully prepared to be bored out of his skull—except Angel’s talents and beauty fill the vacant places in his soul.

Angel can’t seem to stop Quan from burning himself into her mind, right down to the exact dimensions of his abdominals. But when they fall into a trap, survival means pooling every one of their talents. A move that could balance their souls…or throw their hearts into dangerous chaos.

Warning: Feeding panther-shifters results in territorial behavior and steamy displays of affection. Be on the lookout for claw marks, love bites and heavy petting.

She is the glue that holds everything together and she handles everything from bailing our heroes out of trouble to setting up press releases. She also has powerful memory retention where she is able to recall and retain everything she has every seen. To Angel her perfect memory keeping skills is sometimes a blessing...sometimes a curse but of late, it seems to be more of a curse than anything. In her story, Angel is sent to LA to recruit a new hero for the team, investigate a possible leak within the LA heroes headquarters and keep one antsy panther out of trouble. Yes, Tequani returns...he is Panther's older brother. He is in the states to visit his brother and sister in law when he gets into a little bit of trouble at LAX airport. Angel is running on little to no sleep when she is sent to LA and she is also stressed out. What she doesn’t need is the distraction of Quan’s sexiness along with everything else that is going on. When someone she thought she could trust betrays her and the heroes...Quan just may be exactly the distraction that Angel needs. Angel and Tequani were perfect together and I’m happy to see that she finally get her HEA and I've been taken with Quan since we met him in the previous Ten book. This is a wonderfully sweet romance with just about enough sexual tension and superhero action thrown in. I absolutely adore this series and Lola hasn’t steered me wrong with any of her heroes yet. The world and character building as always is expertly done and for a novella length tale, Ms. Dodge doesn’t leave you hanging at all with Angel. I love the family feel of the heroes in the Manhattan Ten group, how they always have each other back no matter how irritated they may be with each other at the time. Also, Lola has such a wonderful array of characters, its a very diverse world in the MT series and I love that. If you have a deep love of heroes who are flawed but definitely fierce and sexy, then you will love the Manhattan Ten.**book provided by author for the purpose of my honest thoughts**

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good reading By LAS Reviewer A wild panther shifter loose in the LAX!Angelina is the babysitter or the manager for the Manhattan Ten with total recall ability. Meaning she never forgets a thing. There is a super hero group for every area like New Orleans and such. And Angelina AKA Angel manages the Manhattan group. They save the humans from paranormal threats.A hero recruitment program in UCLA goes haywire when she’s sent to retrieve a wild panther shifter in the airport but also has to figure out who is siding with the anti-supers.This is my first time to read a Manhattan Ten book, so I was surprised to find I totally fell in love with the characters. I’m not only talking about the main characters. This was written in a way that the appropriate reaction is shown for the appropriate character.Angel is a strong iron-willed woman with a skill that could put a damper on some aspects of a relationship. So I was curious to see the development of the chemistry she had with Quan, the wild panther shifter she rescued in the airport.Quan is a panther shifter who has literally lived in the jungle until he thought he needed a change and tried to travel without a Visa. He not only gets tangled in conspiracy and but he finds his mate.Since this is the fourth book I think that Ms. Dodge did a good job providing a lot of background info but I would still say that there was some that was missing. However, for me the highlight was the relationship between Quan and Angel right up until the climax. The plot was foggy for me at first. The past played such a big role in this but in the end I understood what was going on. I still had some questions that went unanswered. I would suggest for the readers to start from the beginning. This doesn’t mean that this could never be read as a standalone, but to really understand the plot I suggest starting from the first book in this series. There’s a lot going on in this short story and readers who want action with a heaping helping of the paranormal should check this out for a quick read.originally posted at long and short reviews

She’s on her way to a recruitment fair in Los Angeles and she’s investigating the murders of a handful of other superheroes. But then, there’s a situation. Panther’s brother, Quan, has just flow in and caused a scene. Being an expert at dealing with wayward supers, Angel heads to the airport where she manages to tranquilize Quan while he’s in panther form and gets him back to her hotel. Now, not only does she had to worry about the fair and finding who’s behind the murders, she has to babysit. Her powers aren’t exactly being used efficiently.I thought Angel was a lot of fun! Quan is so great! We got to meet him in Junglecat Honeymoon, and it was nice getting to know him more. Angel assigns him the role of her fake bodyguard, since he’s a large man, and he just eats it up! Of course, the fake bodyguard must eventually become the real bodyguard, since Angel’s big brain leads her right to the person responsible for the missing supers. The two work really well together to bring down the bad guy!My only disappointment was that there wasn’t enough kissing! Angel really isn’t focused on a romance at all, but I still enjoyed the glimpse that was there. I was just glad that Angel and Quan weren’t suddenly madly in love due to the adrenaline of fighting crime. They are attracted to each other, and their story ends with them in a good place. I certainly hope we get to visit those two in a future novella!*Disclaimer: I received this book from the author for review. No compensation was offered or accepted.

I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. The author has a very unique way of letting his characters move in and out of their dangers without resorting to the hack and slash pastiche. Very cleverly written. I’m eagerly awaiting the next episode.

Combining the sorcery of The Night Circus with the malefic suspense of A Secret History, Thorn Jack is a spectacular, modern retelling of the ancient Scottish ballad, Tam Lin—a beguiling fusion of love, fantasy, and myth that echoes the imaginative artistry of the works of Neil Gaiman, Cassandra Clare, and Melissa Marr.

In the wake of her older sister’s suicide, Finn Sullivan and her father move to a quaint town in upstate New York. Populated with socialites, hippies, and dramatic artists, every corner of this new place holds bright possibilities—and dark enigmas, including the devastatingly attractive Jack Fata, scion of one of the town’s most powerful families.

As she begins to settle in, Finn discovers that beneath its pretty, placid surface, the town and its denizens—especially the Fata family—wield an irresistible charm and dangerous power, a tempting and terrifying blend of good and evil, magic and mystery, that holds dangerous consequences for an innocent and curious girl like Finn.

To free herself and save her beloved Jack, Finn must confront the fearsome Fata family . . . a battle that will lead to shocking secrets about her sister’s death.

It is a competent retelling of the Scottish ballad ‘Tam Lin’, modernized for our time. The official summary compares Harbour’s book to Cassandra Clare, Erin Morgenstern and Melissa Marr, personally I think that the most accurate comparison is to Marr. Thorn Jack is a story of a girl who gets caught up with a mysterious race of beings known as the Fatas who have all the allure and all the menace of the fey.Finn is moving from San Diego to a small town in Upstate New York called Fair Hollow with her professor father after the suicide of her sister, Lily Rose. Finn is a college student. She makes friends with her neighbor, a boy named Christie and another girl named Sylvie. The three are an inseparable trio who happen to end up at this concert by a lake which sparks pretty much the entire plot of the book. At the concert, Finn meets Jack Fata who has long dark hair with red tips. Finn is inexplicably attracted to Jack. There, she learns that the Fatas are this weird, wealthy family that does not go to either of the two colleges in Fair Hollow. Finn and Jack continually encounter each other, eventually forming a romance. Of course, this attracts the ire of Reiko Fata, who is Jack’s sister and perhaps not entirely human. Something sinister is going on in the town of Fair Hollow. If you like to read about heroines who are brave, true, and pure of heart, you will like Finn Sullivan. She is a character who starts off feeling a bit unreachable, as she’s experiencing extreme grief. Yet, as she forms her friendships with Christie and Sylvie, she feels like someone I could actually like. She’s loyal to her friends. She will do whatever it takes to keep her friends safe, even when the Fatas begin to mess with her friends. Finn is the sort of character who never gives up, even when the situation is really tough. She’s quite admirable. If you like stories with a strong parent-child bond, you’ll like Harbour’s Thorn Jack.I think that if you are going into Thorn Jack expecting the next great love story, you might be looking in the wrong place. I did not find the romance to be as well developed as I wanted it to be. Now, do not get me wrong, I really enjoyed this book. However, I thought that Finn and Jack lacked chemistry. Yes, they have quite a few scenes together. They have one impressive date. There’s no witty banter though. For much of the book, Jack resists Finn and is not very nice to her. Yet, she’s attracted to him. Maybe because he is a very dark and mysterious character? I do not know. I just did not feel the romance at all. Maybe you will though. What I liked about Harbour’s debut was the excellent world building. If you like books that weave in fairy mythology with modern times, you’ll love this book. It actually makes use of various forms of mythology beyond fairies. It was cool reading about how mythical creatures affect the lives of everyone in a small Upstate New York town. Granted, these mythical creatures were incredibly sinister. You can feel the darkness wafting off the page, almost. There’s so much magic in this book, yet it never overwhelms the story. At it’s heart, this is a story of love and sacrifice and hope, despite the mythological bits.Katherine Harbour’s writing is very lush. As I was reading Thorn Jack I kept thinking that it felt like Halloween and fall in book form. The scenery pops off the page. I felt like I could picture Fair Hollow perfectly. The pacing is unhurried. There is plenty of action for readers who like when things happen in books. Yet, the thing that stands out most with the writing is how real Fair Hollow feels. Harbour has a gift for making a world come alive through her words. I highly recommend this book if you like vivid world building that calls to mind a certain time of year peppered with interesting characters and a fascinating mythology.

Matlack Being a fan of the Tam Linn ballad and of several novels inspired by it, I naturally had to jump on this one with high hopes. Admittedly the first two chapters had me very worried, Finn's character was so limp and flavorless I was afraid that Katherine Harbour might have jumped into Twilight/Bella territory and I was pretty sore over that idea. Thankfully this is not the case as Finn's initial fugue state is the result of her sister Lilly Rose's death and that once she settles into her new digs, with new friends and school not to forget the mystery that infuses all of HallowHart she begins to perk up and come to life.I found myself over all impressed with Ms. Harbour's imagination and colorful description of the town, the campus with it's antiquated designs and all kinds of mythos carved, welded and painted everywhere you look. I was also very happy that she choose to go old school by presenting the Fey world as beautiful on the surface, yet in truth very dangerous and frightening. Reiko's Fairy Queen is pure manipulative evil and Jack and his kind are the scary bad boys and girls that are simultaneously cool and cruel. The build up of the story was well paced in its sinister cast and the development of the characters is so artfully done that initially I presumed Finn's new friends, Christie and Sylvie to eventually be exposed as Fey themselves as tricks are at every turn and despite the handy use of Tam Linn as a template, Ms. Harbour is imaginative enough to throw a few surprise twists in along the way. In fact, I'll admit I'm not entirely comfortable with all of her artistic liberties. The climatic end did feel overly contrived and for those of us familiar with the original storyline of Tam Linn which requires the Heroine to swing in on the proverbial vine and save the day, it is a bit of a let down for Finn to basically fumble the touchdown leaving Jack to break the game tie with a three point kick. All done in heroic Hollywood style, which feels so jarringly out of place from the tempo of the rest of the book that I actually imagined Indiana Jones coming in and just shooting the evil Reiko rather than engaging in a whip fight - with the equivalent of 4 or 5 car explosions thrown in. It was that convoluted and unnecessary. But over all the story-telling is so strong and colorful, I can bypass it enough that I am very much looking forward to the next two volumes in this series: The Briar Queen and The Nettle King. Ms. Harbour does include a brief bibliography (and soundtrack) when in fact there are many great sources for further reading on this topic. I will also be adding this book to my Tam Linn collection and highly recommend the following titles to anyone who enjoys this one, each unique in their own ways:The Queen of Spells by Dahlov IpcarThe Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie PopeWinter Rose by Patricia A. McKillipTam Linn by Pamela DeanGnat Stokes and the Foggy Bottom Swamp Queen by Sally M. KeehnAs for the suggested soundtrack: 1 and half stars. Too much drowsy hippy-folk that really doesn't match the tone of the story. Also minus some stars for not including basically anything from Evanescence or Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Needs Tighter Writing By Talvi This is clearly a first novel - and after about 30% into the read, it was obvious that the Editor earned her paycheck. For while there are no typos or obvious sentence issues, a sophisticated reader will soon see the problems in the writing's bigger picture: pacing, world building superficiality, lack of originality in characters, and a LOT of superfluous scenes and paragraphs that don't add to the story. With experience, I hope subsequent books tighten the writing. It feels like a concept book in many ways: from the writer's perspective, I could see her saying, "I'll rewrite a more obscure fable like Tam Lin." From the editor's perspective, I can see her saying, "It is a Twilight and Beautiful Creatures' love child AND retelling a fairy tell (so popular now)! Best of all, it's got faeries (another popular YA theme!), and a Scooby Gang (go Buffy!)." And so it comes off as less than the sum of its parts: forced and cobbled together.Story: Finn (Serafina) moves to Vermont from San Francisco after the suicide of her fey older sister. Cue Scooby Gang meet up and then mysterious boy who is clearly supernatural. Can Finn rewrite the tale of Tam Lin by saving her mysterious dark boy from the Fairie Queen? For me, I was very excited by the writing until 30% into the book - it was looking to be 5 stars all the way. And then the supernatural started to kick in and the story ground to a halt. Choppy, abrupt, and unnecessary character POVs changes derailed a lot of the story and pace. Our intrepid heroine would ask someone directly about the fairy folk (the Fatas) and get a roundabout answer, end POV. Then abrupt change to someone else's POV - and we're left wondering why people who know what's going on never give a straight answer and never get asked more than once? It became very frustrating and nearly impossible to stay immersed in the story once the POV left Finn. The characters were very flat - we've seen them all before. Finn's two new friends were pretty much Ron Wesley and Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Love interest Jack was Edward from Twilight. And the murkily evil Fata family were pretty much the evil family from Beautiful Creatures. Other characters were unnecessary - Phouka, for instance, as a love interest for the Ron Wasley character Christie (Chrisopher) could have been excised completely without affecting the story.I still can't figure out why the Fata family fairy queen had a Japanese name and why there were Japanese mythological characters in there (kitsune and a tengu, for example). Muddled between that were copious amounts of Shakespeare fairy references with Yeats dropped liberally (and rather incongruously) as well. It was such an odd mash up.But most frustrating to me was the complete lack of reaction or repercussions to the supernatural world in which the characters suddenly find themselves. Ghosts, witches, fairies - no one seems to be reacting to them at all other than to think they are suddenly hallucinating. It didn't ring true and the book went downhill from that point, bouncing between characters and scenes without a realistic reaction from anyone. As well, the whole point of the Scooby gang seemed to be to get captured so there would be a deus ex machina reaction from main character Finn. The Fatas were pretty stupid. If I was not well read in the YA genre, I likely would have enjoyed this book a lot more. My rating teetered between 2 and 3 stars but I have decided on 3 because I wasn't tearing my hair out with annoyance while reading. I was just, honestly, bored. Too much getting excited about almost learning something and then abrupt dump into someone else's boring POV. Over and over again, never progressing with the plot and with everyone seeming to give cryptic answers for no real point.I hope for future books in the series that the editors tighten up the plot and writing and really hone Harbour's writing to focus on a few characters and not try to overtell the story so disastrously. No more excessive quoting of Shakespeare and poetry, no more 15+ character POVs, and let scenes unravel organically without abruptly ending them after only a few pages.Reviewed from an ARC.

Colt returns to the Hawkridge Mountains with Orchid the half-goblin, Anthony the lightning mage, and Aephyr, the sword-dwelling dryad in tow to hunt for the ruins of Fort Hawkridge and the treasure Colt’s grandfather is said to have hidden away. Local talk is that the mountain swallowed Fort Hawkridge when Colt’s grandfather stole the mountain’s name for his family. Colt doesn’t believe it for a heartbeat, but the call of gold, glory, and adventure is enough to make him risk the mountain’s wrath to clear his grandfather’s name. Danger lurks below the mountain, far stranger and more powerful than the cave goblins Colt has faced. But the greatest danger might just be what he’s brought with him. What isn’t Aephyr telling him? Why is Orchid really returning to the underworld? And the Shepherd twins Colt hired to look after their mounts seem to have ulterior motives.

A scary place By Amazon Customer After reading the first book which I really liked, I bought the second to see where the story went because it didn't end like all series books. The imagery is fantastic and Julian takes you somewhere so complex I got a little lost quite frankly. Don't get me wrong, the story continues but I'll need to read it again to get my head around some of the things that happened under the mountain. It was meant to be scary but the mind couldn't follow the intent. For me, it wasn't anywhere near as enjoyable as the first book, which I gave 5 stars, but worth the read and maybe book 3 will tie it all together.

Welcome to FrameMaker - Creating and Publishing Content. Adobe’s FrameMaker software is the industry leader in technical publishing, and the release of FrameMaker 2015 continues that tradition. FrameMaker specializes in long-document formatting and automates mundane but essential tasks, such as maintaining running headers and footers, and updating tables of contents. It offers an easy path to producing multiple output formats, including print, PDF, and mobile formats.

This book shows new users how to use unstructured FrameMaker, the most popular of the FrameMaker user interface options, to streamline their publishing workflows for greater efficiency and productivity.

I’ve provided new screenshots throughout, as well as coverage of the new features in FrameMaker 12 and FrameMaker 2015. There’s even something for the most knowledgeable Frame folks. There’s a separate list of the features added by version, and lots of best-practice details transposed from my own “shop-worn” copy.

One of the most significant changes since the FrameMaker 11 version of this book is the emergence of the mobile web. FrameMaker has kept pace with new technologies like HTML5, EPUB, and Kindle. This book gives you the detail you need for many of the available FrameMaker options for multichannel output.

In addition to writing about FrameMaker, I practice what we preach. I’ve trained, consulted and written about FrameMaker since the early versions. In fact, the book you are holding was itself produced in FrameMaker 2015.

About the Author At the age of 3, her family sold her to a band of traveling gypsies. Forced to become a bareback rider in the circus, she spent her younger years traveling the country, living out of suitcases and selling macrame keychains on the side. At the age of 16 she became a professional yodeler but, after winning the international yodeling competition in Switzerland at 19, decided to retire at the height of her career. Now, she and her husband (an organic rutabaga farmer from Wales) live in an isolated cabin in eastern Kentucky where they play with a local mariachi band every Friday night, are involved with a murder mystery dinner theater club, and enjoy making origami owls. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It's nice to put the scenery with the books, especially when I love the books! By Solfreedom Absolutely beautiful photographs! All the old houses are haunting and mesmerizing! I grew up in a farmhouse that is almost 130 years old and still in glorious form. I love old houses and old things! These pictures remind me of so many wonderful times. It makes me sad to see all these old, still worth saving, houses, in such disrepair. The photos bring Taryn's stories to life. They give you a look through her eyes and through her camera. I love this. If you read her stories and went on her adventures, this is a wonderful book to look through. The photos include stories not released yet, so you will be able to use this when you read the new ones.Thank you for showing me what Taryn saw, it is hauntingly beautiful!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but still great. My only wish By A.A. Gallagher I have followed all the books, as I am a photographer who documents abandoned and lost places. This one was darker, but still great. My only wish, is that Taryn finds a real love interest. Matt just doesn't cut it. Please!!!!!

USB Type-C (TM) Explained By a0188279 Jan Axelson recommended this book on her site, it is in Kindle Unlimited as well: Exploring USB Type-C Ecosystem by Rajaram REGUPATHY and Navaneethan Sundaramoorthy. They cover a bit on the market for USB-C, terminology including for USB-PD, and 16 use cases for USB-C. The FAQ at the end talks about electronic marking: "What is an e-Marked USB Type-C cable? How is it different from a legacy USB- cable? Answer: USB Type-C cables that implement USB PD to provide the PD characteristics are called Electronically Marked Cables or E-marked Cables. Unlike legacy cables, each USB-C cable may have characteristics of its own, which can be discovered by sending USB PD commands to the cable and receiving a response from the cable. The USB-C cable that does not support these discovery commands will be limited to 5V/3A. A cable that supports discovery command will respond to the query from the host and indicate its power capability. This will determine the functionality of the setup."
