1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Psych 101 Required Reading By Tad Okay, I'm going to really enjoy this neat book about a genie and three wishes, right? Simple plot, witty, clear writing, and some quirky characters - animal, human, and out of this worldly. Not so fast, my friend. If Big Change Gonna Come were simply about a guy and two friends making three wishes, the book wouldn't take almost two hundred pages.So what's the catch? Anyone familiar with Meyers-Briggs or Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory testing would know. Vic is a processor, an off the chart ISTJ, folks, or in MMPI terms, a hysteric psychastheniac with lots of hypomania. And friend Stan and Father O'Malley are bits and pieces of all seven traits. It turn out that the wishes aren't important (and get screwed up anyway.) It's the wish making process that absolutely delights these guys. And all the while the omniscient, Omar-god of a genie stays within ten paces, bemoaning the day he ever created these nuts specifically, and mankind in general. He probably thinks he should have stopped with the lower animals, like cats, and dogs who roll up into scrolls. But come to think of it, maybe he classifies raven-haired, swooning women as acceptable as the cats.Mark my words, folks, this little book will show up in Psych 101 classes at a university near you. Students, profs, and impatient lottery players (for God's sake, man, take the money!) are going to have quite a bit of fun with this one.

A fun romp By Gary D Zenker Big Change Gonna Come answers the question of what would someone do if they were given a genie...errrr, a djinn, and three wishes. And suppose that the djinn is more like Don Rickles than Mother Teresa. What would happen?Apparently, a lot. Although there aren't any huge surprises in the story, it is interesting to see what happens as the characters progress and unsuccessfully try to plan to avoid the disasters others have wished themselves into. Even what seems like a well thought out plan comes with unintended consequences (think: The Monkey's Paw) and solving them isn't easy. It is a fun romp that makes readers draw their own conclusions on what they themselves might do if in the situation.A fun read.

A genie and three wishes is an oft told tale butthis time it's given an unusual twist. How do you make three wishes thatbenefit yourself and those around you, when in reality, the one wish youdearly want to make is for your genie (a real jerk) to just go away? And inthe main character's case, he's keenly aware the he MUST be careful what hewishes for, otherwise the consequences could be disastrous. How he resolveshis dilemma is both funny and touching and surprising. Highly recommended!

Asta is the youngest angel (although she is 3 million years old) and has one week left out of her century long assignment as guardian of the Chicago area. Asta goes around killing demons whenever they are foolish enough to pop up on her radar. Then there is Dar. Dar is a thousand year old demon that has been granted immunity and freedom to walk the Earth, provided he break none of the rules, due to being part of the Iblis's (basically Satan) household. Dar is out walking one day, causing minor mischief and discovering that he is becoming bored with life when he sees and senses Asta, and decides to have a little fun and drive an angel a bit crazy by waltzing around with his energy signature fully out, and then pulling out his immunity card, causing the angel to become angry that she had to waste a whole day chasing after him and doesnt even get to kill him for her efforts! But he doesnt count on an angel like Asta. She's unlike any angel he's ever seen before. Her human form is flawless for one, and she has her little sins. She loves her expresso, and her beautiful clothes. She loves everything about her city and the people in it. And she has one week left. Only one more week before she returns home, and Asta plans to sin as much as she can allow herself to before she returns home. She wants to experience food and music and all the other things she has been denying herself for so long, and will never have the chance to experience again. And the moment Asta sees Dar she is fascinated with him, and he with her. But, though Asta wants to make the most of her last week, she is an angel, and once she feels another demons energy, she feels duty bound to find and destroy that demon. The problem is, she's unable to find it. She encounters a problem she has never had before. Since Dar is also looking for the other demon (mostly to stay by the sexy angels side), they end up teaming up. I wont reveal what else happens, so as not to reveal any spoilers, but I have to say that I really really enjoyed this book. It made me laugh, it made my heart ache, made my heart flutter at times, and fan myself in one or two scenes and I found I just could not put it down. In fact, I've actually been up all night reading it. I tried to put it aside several times to try and get some sleep, but I just kept thinking of it and I wanted to know what was going to happen next, so I finally just succumbed to the inevitable and finished it all. Hopefully now I can get some sleep lol!This book was especially enjoyable to read, as Dar has always been a favorite side character in the authors Imp series (which I HIGHLY recommend you read). He's always a bit gruff and crude, but deep down I'd swear that demon actually had a heart of gold...most of the time anyway, he is a demon after all, and does enjoy causing mischief and mayhem at times. But Dar has always been extremely loyal to those he cares for, those he loves (though no demons generally admit having that feeling for others), and I've always loved him for that. I was really happy to see a book that was all about him and was able to give him his HEA. And it was also nice to see a couple characters from the authors others books as well. All in all, I'd highly recommend it!Note: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review (though I actually had already purchased a copy prior to that). Any and all opinions and views are strictly my own.

Debra you outdid yourself on this book....don't tell my boss, but I read at work every chance I could get!!! It is hard not to chuckle while you are looking like you are hitting the keyboard and reading your kindle....and then one of those snide comments comes out of Dar's mouth and I lose it!!!

If you read it on its own the heroine, Asta, will seem more TSTL than she actually is.The background is that the angels in Aaru (heavenish) went to war with each other 2.5 million years ago. They fought over two issues: whether to give humans the gifts of Aaru to humanity and how to reach enlightenment. The angels sill in Aaru believe that enlightenment can only be achieved through asceticism and distance from beings who use their senses while the angels of chaos believed enlightenment could be reached while embracing the senses. The fight was long and sad: it split families who fought against each other and many angels died. Finally, a truce was reached and the angels of chaos agreed to move to Hel. There were terrible consequences to the truce, the angels of chaos devolved into demons with no memory of their time in Aaru, the angels of Aaru are unable to have children because they cannot form them with each other, the races cannot enter the other’s realm, and there is a lot of residual resentment turned into hatred.The angels in Aaru love and hate humans. They were the ones who wanted to give us the gifts of Aaru, but they now feel it was a terrible mistake. They feel guilty about what they see as the damage done to us, but they hate us because we revel in our passions and remind them of their mistake. They fear us because we can lead them away from their acetic ways and cause them to fall. Because of this, the angels maintain a form that can barely feel sensation when on earth and they keep their distance.This book is bland compared to Debra Dunbar’s other books because it is a classic case of show me, not tell me. Dar is one of only two heroes I can honestly say I have a crush on. The other is Mr. Rochester (and I may or may not have had a crush on Lord Peter Wimsy when I was a teenager). Dar is loyal, bloodthirsty, tricky, funny, smart, brave, and can change his shape. Dar is a being who has greeting sex with his foster sibling Sam (heroine of the Imp series) that involves torn limbs, he's submitted a breeding contract with her (demons and angels have no determined sex), followed Sam into certain death, and saved her life over and over. He’s also thrown her under the bus a few times although his character is evolving. Where is that awesome being?It is never really explained why Asta is so clueless, which is Ms. Dunbar’s style and one I appreciate. However that style does cause a problem if you haven’t read the series because it’s tough to understand how Asta could have lived among humans for 100 years without knowing anything about them. Asta lacks the depth a being 2.5 million years old should have. She must have been doing something all that time.This is by far my least favorite book of the series because of the blandness, lack of action, and because it adds nothing to my understanding of this complex world. I was excited to have a book about Dar, but this one was super disappointing.

A 952 page book for both dummies and more experienced users written by one of the best Windows writers By Brian The author, Woody Leonhard, has been writing about Windows and Microsoft Office since 1992. He has a very informative style of writing that is easy to follow. He is a straight shooter and will tell you things that Microsoft will not. Because of Woody's experience he will often give you tips that can save you a lot of time and hassle. Generally this Windows 10 All-in-One for Dummies book covers everything from what is Windows 10, how to get and install it, how to use and customize the new features, and many more technical issues.The book is organized into 10 mini-books, each of which has multiple chapters. Here is a summary:1) Windows 10 for newbies, including buying a Windows 10 computer or tablet; Windows 10 for the experienced (what's new); the 6 versions of Windows 10; and how to get and install Windows 10.2) Personalizing Windows: navigating around the desktop (Start menu and more); working with the Notification Center, user accounts, syncing, and privacy issues.3) Working on the desktop: personalizing the Start menu, desktop, and task bar; using multiple desktops; internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome (MS Edge is in Book 5)); Cortana (MS's competitor to Apple's Siri personal assistant); system maintenance.4) Using the built-in universal apps: mail, calendar, contacts, photos, OneNote, maps, music, movies, and TV.5) Connecting with the universal apps: MS Edge (the new internet browser), Skype, Bing, the Windows Store, games, etc.6) Socializing with universal apps: Office for Windows 10, OneDrive, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.7) Controlling your system: settings (including God mode), troubleshooting, libraries, virtual storage, homegroups (networks), and printers.8) Maintaining Windows 10: backup, restore, sync, reset, events, system tools, and virtual machines.9) Securing Windows 10: scams, viruses, malware; Windows built-in security programs and other security software.10) Enhancing Windows 10: using Windows 10 with the iPhone, iPad, Android, Chromecast, Roku, Kindle, etc; Google apps; Outlook, and the best free add-ons.I followed along with the author's instructions on pages 86-87 while doing the online upgrade of a laptop. The author says "Just follow the instructions [on your screen] and Windows 7 or 8.1 will update itself..." He doesn't give step by step instructions here. So what he doesn't say is that when you click on the Windows flag in the lower right corner of the taskbar you have to register and then wait a couple days until Microsoft makes the Windows 10 download available. Then you can do the download and the actual upgrade process. Doing the online upgrade I never saw the "Choose what to keep" screen shown in Table 4-1. And if you want some additional help in the upgrade process, then jump to step 11 on page 90 (which is part of the clean install instructions) which explains Express Settings vs Customized Settings. If you choose the online upgrade, you don't have to worry about choosing the 32-bit or 64-bit option (page 73-74). Microsoft will install the 64-bit version of Windows 10 if you have a 64-bit CPU. For more about that, see the comment that I left.It's a good dummies book and it tries to target both the inexperienced users and the experienced users. The book has a lot of good information about learning and customizing Windows 10. However there were times that I thought the coverage for the more experienced users fell a little short even with 952 pages. For example, Windows 10 now has mandatory updates for drivers. The issue is that some of these updated drivers may cause your hardware to malfunction. Woody does not mention that the only way to opt out of automatic updates for a driver is by downloading a special tool from the MS website. Also, page 8 gives a website for extras and updates to the book, and the website does not exist at the time I wrote this review.

He has guided me through the caves and across the fire pits of Windows from 3.1 to WIN 10. The only version I didn't buy was WIN 8. On his website, he raised enough flags to cause me to stick with WIN 7 until something better came out.Like others who have written reviews over time, Woody's writing style is intelligent and very easy to follow...hard to find that combination. His new book has phrases in the foreword similar to his other books... "You don't need to read cover-to-cover (in this case 950+ pages). Pick a topic you want help with. Later, when you hit a snag, read about it." But, he puts so much stuff in the "Well, I be darned" category on each page, that I just keep reading.The changes from WIN 7 to WIN 10 have been a challenge for me...perhaps because I'm 71 and have spent far too much time trying to figure out where Microsoft moved a feature I had become used to. Woody knows...and tells you how to find it...along with hundreds of tips on supporting software and helpful websites.If Woody and I live long enough, Microsoft will come out with more "upgrades" to Windows. When they come out, Woody will write about, and I buy another Woody book.

If you are not alreadyfamiliar with the later versions of Windows, (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1) this might not be the best version of Win 10 for Dummies for you. There are other versions for first timers.That said Leonhard does his usual good job of breaking Windows into the basic functions and how to weave your way through the various options.and more importantly, where they are hiding. It's clear that he personally has some issues with Microsoft's default configuration and you get a thorough explanation of why. Not a book to read cover to cover but great to run through with the compter in front of you and to keep on the shelf as a first reference.

Which need to be updated.

This book is a good introduction to the world of Cisco Collaboration By Andy L This book is a good introduction to the world of Cisco Collaboration voice products. It's well written and I recommend it to anybody who needs an introduction to Cisco voice. However, you will NOT pass the Cisco 210-060 exam with this book as your main reference. I know this from first hand experience. The 210-060 exam covers a wide range of topics many of which are not covered in this book. For example there were granular questions concerning hardware products such as voice gateways and ATAs. If you're new to Cisco Collaboration and need a introductory book this book is for you but it will only covers around 40% - 50% of what the exam covers.Edit: DOH! I got the exam wrong it should read 210-060.

But as far as preparing you for the exam, it does not do that. I have taken the exam twice now, and both times I was very surprised at the questions I received. I have read through this book numerous times, taken and aced the practice exams provided, used the memory tables extensively, and on exam day couldn't believe the amount of information that I didn't know.I'm not sure if this is an issue with the book, or Cisco testing. I've used paid online training websites, Cisco Press books, I've worked in the actual job for a few months now and they all teach and utilize the same lessons. The exam does not.Until they can accurately communicate what is valuable to know for the exam, I would skip over this book.

This book says it prepares you for the CICD, but it doesn't. Some of the questions on the exam are not in book at all. The example questions that come with the book are not like the exam. I have looked on many forums as well and people are reporting the same.It is a well written book and I did learn about Collaboration, but for passing the exam, this book alone will not help you.

About the Author

Courtney Bowman has been working in the data analytics space for the last decade. After earning degrees in Physics and Philosophy at Stanford University, Courtney spent several years at Google working on quantitative analytics, auction design, and pricing strategy, where he developed a strong understanding of the intricacies of data analytics algorithmic implementation and the attendant privacy challenges. Drawing on that background and an appreciation of the need for value-oriented approaches to systems architecture and design in order to ensure privacy protections, Courtney joined Palantir Technologies in 2010 as an in-house Privacy and Civil Liberties specialists. Within that role, he has developed extensive experience working with local and federal government agencies (including law enforcement, criminal justice, health and social services) to develop technology-driven solutions to information sharing and inter-agency cooperation in a manner that respects applicable privacy, security, and data integrity requirements. Courtney is an avid distance runner and cyclist. He resides in New York City with his increasingly unwieldy library of German literature and philosophy.

Ari Gesher is a technologist and software generalist who has split his career between systems engineering, software engineering. In his 17 year career, he’s worked at a number of startups, was the maintainer of the SourceForge.net open source software repository before the word ‘github’ even existed, and landed at Palantir as an very early engineer in 2006 (after dropping out of his undergrad education at University of Illinois for a second time). At Palantir, Ari started working on backend systems. His first feature was implementing the metadata tagging for Palantir’s platforms that are the foundation of all privacy-protective access controls. In his time at Palantir, he’s worked on both Palantir’s Philanthropic Engineering Team and the Privacy & Civil Liberties Team, as well as overseeing Palantir’s Open Source efforts. Today, when he gets a chance to code, he’s busy re-inventing himself in the UX domain, working as a rapid prototyper for Palantir’s Product Design team.An actor, improv-comedian, and seasoned public speaker, Ari has branched out into speaking on and writing about all manner of technical topics - especially in the sphere of ‘big data’ and the limits of automated decision-making. He excels at decoding complex technical topics in to a digestible form, drawing on a love of the history of computing as the lens through which to view the future. Ari has been featured at O’Reilly’s Strata Conference, The Lean Startup Conference, GigaOm Structure, MIT's Technology Review's EmTech Conference, Harvard Business School, the Institute for the Future's Tech Horizons Conference, the Economist Future Technologies Summit, and PayPal's TechXploration series.Ari lives in Menlo Park, California (one of the birthplaces of the Internet) with his wife, Nicole and their two small children.

John Grant has been working in the privacy field for more than a decade. After graduating from Duke University in 2000, John began work as a U.S. Senate aide where he helped develop privacy-related policy (among other issues) for two Senators. Privacy and civil liberties quickly became a passion for John, and he focused on these issues while attending night classes at the Georgetown University Law Center, finally obtaining his J.D. in 2007. By then he had joined the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee as Counsel to the Ranking Member, where he handled the intelligence oversight portfolio in addition to privacy and civil liberties issues. Over the course of four years with the Committee, he gained significant insight into the practical difficulties inherent in integrating sound privacy policy into data analysis and data sharing programs, as he wrote legislation related to the management of the Department of Homeland Security Privacy Office, developed proposals to rewrite the U.S. Privacy Act, helped strengthen the U.S. Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, and worked to incorporate numerous privacy-related provisions to numerous pieces of legislation. In 2010, John joined Palantir Technologies as the company’s first Civil Liberties Engineer responsible for assisting Palantir engineers to build and deploy privacy-protective technologies in their products.

Daniel Slate has worked at the nexus of privacy, technology, and security for the past six years. At one time a researcher for former cabinet-level national security officials, he has also worked as an engineering strategist and product manager for Palantir Technologies, where he focused on architecting privacy-safeguarding software for the international security community. He studied at Stanford University and splits his time between Northern California and Jerusalem.

To be clear, this book isn't about security (limiting unauthorized access), but about privacy from govts/companies (limiting authorized access).This book calls out complexities in privacy policy, such as the tension between providing audit logs and providing a hard delete feature.This is a must-read for anyone interested in digital rights.

This story takes place 322 years after the end of civilization. A small group of survivors live on a small island off the coast. They are ruled by a group of Elders who dictate what everyone does and who they are matched with. Ashley is a girl who has been matched with a man who is next in line to be an Elder. But Ashley is very, very curious about the mainland. Is it still there or is it gone, as the Elders would have you believe. If it still exists, are there people there? Wandering around the island she finds that the Elders have been hiding a canoe, two actually. So she and her friend Mason take off to find the mainland.There's a lot more to the story than that but I don't want to give anything away. I loved this book! The characters came alive. The twists and turns kept me on my toes. I was constantly saying to myself "didn't see that coming". I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery, a little sci fi, and surprises. My one complaint is that September is so far away. Write faster Stephanie!

Taking place 322 years after an apocalypse, Ashley finds herself always questioning the 'whys' of everything! The Elders are the governing body of the Island which is located in the NW part of the country. Jobs are assigned to the nearly one thousand residents around the age of thirteen. Mason and Ashley have been friends since their time in school. As a result of a death, both of their futures change dramatically. That is the backdrop for this most interesting and intriguing story.There is a lot of undercurrent running under the surface of the main plot. There are questions of faith, good versus evil and the promise of hope surfaces more than once. Several parts really impressed me and one was the 'hierarchy' that the Elders strived to attain. The most impressive to me was the fact that the author somehow managed to come up with an absolutely new twist on life after an apocalypse. I call this after the time before! Dare I say 'Oh Ashby'?This is a well written novel with characters that blend well together, the plot is well defined and the ending leaves the reader waiting for the next book. Lots of unanswered questions for the reader to ponder for the next few months.Most highly recommended.

By Heather I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.So post post apocalyptic books really are not my thing, but the description of the book caught my attention. I was sucked into the book within the first few chapters, and really enjoyed the characters, the writing style was great and the author did a great job of explaining what was going on. The book kept me in suspense and the plot twists, well let’s just say that you will not see what’s coming, coming! Just when you think you figure it out,plot twist! I will be awaiting the next books in the series.

All or most of them full with examples, screenshots etc. What I particularly liked the most in "PhoneGap Essentials" are side notes, comments on nifty things, you should pay attention to, and extra information, that is provided by the author. Aside of general information and knowledge of PhoneGap itself and easy to follow examples, I found most interesting one of additional chapters, where Ivan Turkovic is talking about visual frameworks, you can use to enrich look & feel of your PhoneGap applications. And where he lists all pros and cons of these frameworks in an easy to understand, yet very useful advantage-disadvantage list.I'm the reviewer of "PhoneGap Essentials" book and I was responsible to catch all the errors and mistakes found in it during writing process. Excellent Horror By Frank Errington 5 of 5 StarsIf I had to find something to complain about with regards to the work of Rio Youers it would be that he is not terribly prolific. Three years since his last novel is a very long time. Of course, that last novel was Westlake Soul, one of my favorite books of the last five years and now he's given us another gem.Point Hollow presents the reader with a new and intriguing premise that gets off to a wickedly good start. Old Bear Mountain is known to the locals as Abraham's Faith. At thirty-four hundred feet, it was the tallest of the peaks surrounding the town of Point Hollow. It was also a place of which the locals tend to steer clear.When he was ten years old, Matthew Bridge had a terrifying experience with the mountain, one that would (although he couldn't recall what had happened) haunt his dreams well into adulthood and could end up costing him his marriage.The characterizations in this novel are strong, Rio's skill at creating conversations is excellent, he shows the ability to do with words what a great artist can do with paints and a canvas.At times disturbing and exceedingly dark, the story flows quickly through its 280 pages and is one of the most complete novels I've read in some time. The truth, when revealed, is horrible beyond words And the last third of the book was just a heart pounding race to the finish.Youers may not be pounding them out like James Patterson or even Stephen King, but what he creates places him right up there with the leading writers of modern horror.I can honestly say Point Hollow is my favorite read so far in 2015 and it's going to be a tough one to top. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy, available now in paperback or ebook from ChiZine Publications.I give this one my highest recommendation.

POINT HOLLOW is a very different book, still marked with the turns of phrase and word choices that make Youers’ writing unique and spectacular.This book is about a small town in upstate New York, one that’s very easy to picture myself riding my motorcycle through and not even noticing. But everything is not well in this quaint little hamlet, no, there is a presence and it must be fed.Youers paints his antagonist as extremely sympathetic, even as he does abysmal things. You can almost empathize with the guy. If circumstances had been different, you think he could have been an okay dude.The supporting characters, Bobby and the sheriff, are compelling, and while the sheriff teeters on the brink of being a caricature, Youers keeps him believable.It’s a book that will make you think twice about returning to your home town. You left for a reason, maybe you should stay away.

The cruelty inflicted on the innocent children for the sake of salvation sets the tone for the consuming guilt and mistrust of Point Hollow. A child of the community growing up feeding the evil. Another child, once a near offering to the evil but transcends from victim to savior.Absolutely thrilling page turner. I will definitely look for other offerings by this author.

My Star Trek addiction enriched my imagination with characters like Mr. Spock, a Vulcan-human offspring who was often considered heartless because of his lack of displayed emotion, and Data, the android who wanted to feel emotions. Forman got his smarts from these legendary characters, but the rest is pure Maggie. He is four robots in one sexy package, and though he is a capable assistant, he has the hots for a pop star who sings save the world music. He also has some unusual abilities which help him and Zeke survive in this troubled world.Like Zeke Landry, I also focused on water studies in my scientific career. We also share a love of the Georgia coast and a sense of connection with the environment. But the similarities end there. As you will see in the story, Zeke has some fairly unique differences, and despite his preference for the sidelines, finds himself more often than not in the spotlight. I hope you enjoy his adventures in this series and that you are also inspired to be more mindful of our planet's resources.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Draws You In and Holds You Fast By Travis O Wooten This is a good old fashion mystery novel that happens to be set in the not-so-distant future. The earth is losing valuable drinking water, and not due to pollution like today. It is literally disappearing. Dr. Zeke Landry is on the case, trying to solve this mystery as well as the one regarding the increase in natural disasters. As he digs deeper, he learns that neither is because of natural planetary cycles, but something more sinister.You will love Forman, the only non-human main character that is perhaps the most human and certainly the most fun. Makes me want a robot assistant, only I think I would prefer a Carrie or a Barbara rather than a Gary or a Bob.

Cohen The world is on the brink of ecological disaster, but scientist Dr. Zeke Landry has trouble convincing anyone that a conspiracy might be the cause. As he digs deeper, he uncovers truths about himself that leave him even more mystified. When he becomes a target for deadly forces bent on his destruction, is it because of his research into the global water shortage or because of his own mysterious background? In a race against time, he must discover his legacy and activate his powers to save the world. G-1 is a page-turning ecological thriller that could become chillingly real.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. and love her writing style By Polly Iyer I'm not usually a sci-fi reader, but I've read other books by Ms. Carson, AKA Maggie Toussaint, and love her writing style. This is a different genre than she usually writes, and you can see her science background in the complexity of the plot. Water, or maybe the lack of clean water, will be one of the things that we will have to deal with in the future. In G-1, the water is disappearing. Zeke Landry, a specialist in the field, has to find out why and where it's going. Full disclosure: I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of this book before it became a Kindle Scout selection, and I found it fascinating. There are quite a few interesting characters in this book, but my favorite was Forman, the brilliant robot.
