Well thought of diet regime By Denniger Bolton I've read a lot of diet books, but this is the first one that is promoted by the National Institute of Heath and has been named by U.S. News and World Report as the best overall diet. But it's more than a diet, says Gina Crawford, it's a way of life, a way of eating that will promote long term health. As a recipe book, I am attracted to some yummy recipes that are listed, like Green Smoothie, Sun-Dried Tomato Basil Pizza and Rigatoni with Broccoli and Garlic and I've always been a sucker for a good Artichoke Dip and now I can make my own.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. good recipes By Vessy This is an excellent cookbook for creating healthy low cholesterol meals that are easy, quick and very tasty. It is a cookbook but it also contains a wealth of information on the DASH diet – a diet that is more of a lifestyle than a strict diet. My kids loved the buckwheat pancakes with strawberries and I am definitely going to make them again. We are now trying out the dinner recipes and so far everything has proved just delicious. Recommended.

As i'm reading more and more of these dieting books im realizing that I'm starting to build a big collection of them. I'm glad that I purchased this book while it was on sale because there is a good amount of value in some of the recipes. If you are into the DASH diet than would recommend that you get a copy of this book especially when it on sale so that you can have a good source of recipes in one place without having to search the internet for too long to find them. This book is a must for anyone seeking to engage in this type of diet.

In Darujhistan, the city of blue blue fire, it is said that Love and Death shall arrive dancing. It is summer, and the heat is oppressive, but for the small, rotund man in the faded red waistcoat discomfiture is not just because of the sun. All is not well. Dire portents plague his nights and haunt the city streets like fiends of shadow. Assassins skulk in alleyways, but the quarry has turned, and the hunters become the hunted. Hidden hands pluck the strings of tyranny like a fell chorus. While the bards sing their tragic tales, somewhere in the distance can be heard the baying of hounds...and in the distant city of Black Coral, ruled by Anomander Rake, Son of Darkness, ancient crimes awaken, intent on revenge. It seems Love and Death are indeed about to arrive...hand in hand, dancing.

A thrilling, harrowing novel of war, intrigue, and dark, uncontrollable magic, Toll the Hounds is the next chapter in Erikson's monumental series - epic fantasy at its most imaginative and storytelling at its most exciting.

"This novel and all others in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series follow my own pronunciations of Malazan words and names. My thanks to Michael and Jane and everyone at Brilliance Audio." (Steven Erikson, Victoria, B.C. Canada, January 2014)

Nicholson This is the 8th book in Steven Erikson's 'Malazan Book of the Fallen" series.Of all the books in the Malazan series, this is, without a doubt, my least favorite...I will explainFirst, the pros;Overall, this series is epic fantasy at its best; in fact 829 pages in this book alone. There is intrigue, magic, unexpected enemies and friends and even some erotic moments; not to mention the usual backstabbing and clandestine plotting. In this book we are reacquainted with some old friends from previous tales, e.g. Cutter, Druiker, Karso Orlong (Toblakai warrior), Anomander Rake and last but not least, the ever loquacious, forever famished, mound of round, Kruppe.Erikson's strength is his use of prose to describe people and their surrounding, all the while weaving a tale his characters come alive in; this latest installment is no exception. However, this may be the first in all the books of this series that may be deemed somewhat overwritten, mainly because of some of these perceived strengths. Which leads me into commenting on...The cons;1.)As with previous Erikson works, the book starts off by given brief glimpses of several different developing stories. The problem here, in my opinion, is that unlike previous books, most of these story lines do not really develop into something resembling a plot until well after the first 200+ pages.2.)In addition to the slow development, the writing seems disjointed and difficult to follow; I had to almost 'study' sections to try to figure out what Erikson had his characters doing and saying.3.)I found I became 'weary' of trying to interpret the vague, unclear conversations and happenings that occurred through out most of the entire novel. Eventually I stopped trying to figure out the difficult passages and just concentrated on sections that I found easy to understand; I don't think I'd have finished the book otherwise.4.)I never thought I'd ever hear myself saying this about an Erikson book; I found myself somewhat bored by some of the dragged out, confusing descriptions and tales; almost to the point of skimming them.5.)And last, I can't remember the last time I've been so happy to have finally finished a book. Conclusion:An intriguing Malazan tale that had potential, but unfortunately got mired down with a sluggish beginning and middle; the last section (Toll the Hounds) was better...but overall, a somewhat 'difficult' read. That is not to say there weren't some great moments in this book, because there were, many in fact; and this was my main reason for rating the book as high as I did.I seems to me that Erikson has 'stumbled' with this book; he knows what he's talking about, but I can't say the same for me. I wonder about other readers; I'm I the only one to notice this tendency towards 'unreadability'?I hope Erikson gets back on track with his next installment; one more book like this and he may begin to lose some of his loyal followers.Difficult to rate this book, so I settled for a 3.5 and rounded it up to a 4.0 (rather than down to a 3.0 ) because I decided to give Erikson the benefit of the doubt...for this one.Ray Nicholson

Hobart I can certainly relate to those who are annoyed by the frequent jumping from one character (or group of characters) to another every 2-3 pages or so, but if you stick with "Toll the Hounds", everything eventually coalesces into a stunning conclusion, as at least one central theme is resolved. Here are some reasons to hang in there: 1. Mother Dark turned her back on her children, the Tiste Andii. Her son, Anomander Rake, assumed responsibility for the fate of his people. The purpose of his sword Dragnipur is revealed, and is not what it seems. Rake's fate and purpose are revealed in stunning fashion, enough to justify reading "Toll the Hounds".2. Traveler: who is he, and what brings him to Darujhistan? Another revelation sure to surprise those familiar with earlier books. Never assume the departed do not return.3. Hood, God of death; what is he behind the hood? His purpose is also revealed; the dead are collected for a reason, and and marching towards their fate.4. A new player is introduced; the Dying God. The visceral corruption of his blood compares to the Crippled God.As usual, several players are called upon to make terrible sacrifices, and redemption abounds. As always, a few Bridgeburners fight against extinction. And of course, another group of intrepid travelers bumble and stumble their way towards their destination in comedic fashion, trying not to get themselves killed in the process.I know the book starts a little slow, but stick it out; the conclusion is worth the price of admission.

From a rabid Steven Erikson fan - I was a little disappointed By Amazon Customer I'm giving this book 3 1/2 stars, 4 stars officially because Erikson deserves being rounded up. I'll start by saying I am a hugely devoted Steven Erikson fan and consider this the best fantasy series in print right now. However, Toll the Hounds has some shortcomings from my eye that haven't surfaced in the other books of the series. Here's the specifics:As noted by the author, Erikson changed his writing style with this book. He is writing mostly as though the story is told by Kruppe, to an audience named later. I didn't mind this too much but it comes and goes like a fake Keanu Reeves accent. On top of this, there is far less action for 90% of the book and much more reflection on emotions, internal monologue, pondering the past etc. Most of it honestly, was quite boring and tedious, not to mention inconsequential. Instead of rewarding the readers with more of the interesting storylines (Traveler/Karsa, Bridgeburners in Daru), he almost delights in teasing them and then immediately switching to something boring once the reader's interest get pique'd. I thought most of the Nimander story, Seerdomin/Redeemer, and even the Rake/Endest Silan/Spinnock Durav storylines were FAR too lengthy and fell flat. Then after all of the musings (kind of mopey musings) of the Tiste Andii, the Redeemer, Seerdomin, etc we get about 100 pages or so of extreme unadulterated mayhem for an ending. Now, I like unadulterated mayhem, don't get me wrong, but it just came across as rushed. The mayhem was more quick, random and confusing than deep and emotional like it should have been. The emotional payoff of this book should have blown Deadhouse Gates and Memories of Ice away, given the material. It doesn't. If the pace of the book was a chart it would be a 1 or 2 for the first 90% and then spike to 200. It didn't work in this book and I have to say Erikson kind of asked for it (I'll explain).Erikson has always been known to be intentionally vague. He'll have flashbacks or dialogue that is meaningless to the reader because they don't know the context. I've always liked this about Erikson because I know he'll explain later (making second readings of his books a must). In this one though, he takes it over the top. There is almost nothing given to the reader so they can get an emotional grip on the story. A spoiler free example is the story of the Tiste Andii, Endest Silan, Anomander and his brothers. There is a bunch of depressing talk of sacrifice, betrayal, redemption, etc but we have no idea what Erikson is talking about at the time. How am I supposed to get emotionally involved when I have no idea what the context is? When I finally get the explanation it is too late, and rushed.I think others may understand what I mean, perhaps not. I recommend reading the book at any rate. The action at the end IS awesome, and this is still the best fantasy series on the market. I hope Erikson goes back to what he does best which is maintaining an exciting pace and leaving the emotional smash over the head for the end, when we're fully vested. Memories of Ice did this and is still one of the top 3 books I have ever read. The way he balanced the action, emotion and mystery of that book was pure genius.I still love Erikson and I truly hope other readers see something in this book that I did not. A weak Erikson book is still miles ahead of Terry Goodkind's best.

If you like the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings this is a must read, I really enjoyed the first book and the second just keeps getting better. If the author can close out with the third installment that's as good as the other two books he'll have an amazing trilogy on his hands.

Polychrome: A Romantic Fantasy, by Ryk E. Spoor

About the Author Ryk E. Spoor was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and has since lived in South Dakota, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and New York. A fan of Oz from the time he was 6, Ryk collected all of the Baum Oz books and read them repeatedly, never forgetting them even when he graduated to the epic fantasy of Tolkien, the space opera of Doc Smith, the harder SF of Heinlein, Asimov, and Clement, and later becoming a computer geek, a gamer, and an anime fan. Along this fannish journey, Ryk also accumulated a few degrees (in Mathematics and Science, Psychology, and Information Science) and worked in various locations. He also met, dated, and married his wife Kathleen Moffre-Spoor, and they now have four children – all of whom have been introduced to Oz, among other stories of his youth. In 2000, Ryk cleverly attracted the attention of Baen Books by insulting the work of one of its editors, Eric Flint, online; this eventually led to the publication of his first book, Digital Knight, in 2003. With the publication of Polychrome Ryk E. Spoor enters the realm of self-publication; Polychrome is his eleventh book overall. He now lives in Troy, NY, with his family, one poodle, and a flock of chickens.

(I already have.)Now, here’s why:There are a bunch of new Oz-related novels out right now. But Polychrome is that rarity among homages to the classics, a novel that’s both wholly faithful to the spirit of its source material and striking in its willingness to look beyond that canon. It isn’t satire or allegory or re-imagining or reboot, nor is it even simply a sequel. It’s a straight-ahead, freshly conceived extrapolation from L. Frank Baum’s original series, possibly even a book Baum might have written were he reincarnated into the 21st century. It’s a book both for devoted Oz enthusiasts and newcomers to Oz. Detail-minded fans will find Spoor’s scholarship impeccable, with characters and settings drawn from bone-deep knowledge of the source material. Yet even those who’ve never read the original series can easily follow alongside mortal hero Erik Medon, who finds himself unexpectedly drafted by the titular Rainbow’s Daughter to save not just Oz, but all of fairyland from a genuinely cataclysmic threat.Spoor’s prose style is modern, displaying deft genre awareness and deviously clever plotting. In some respects, Polychrome is as much a descendant of The Princess Bride as it is of the Baum canon. But above all, it’s an utterly engaging read. It’s a very rare novel that can make me laugh aloud, shiver, and go all misty-eyed in the space of a few chapters, but Polychrome did and does. There is a new Royal Historian of Oz in town, and his name is Ryk E. Spoor.

Williams I can't resist opening this one with a quote from the grandfather in Princess Bride. This book has everything, "Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles..."I think this would be a lot of fun to read, even if you've never read any of the original OZ books. For me, it brought back a lot of fond memories, even though I haven't read the original stories in twenty years or so. Spoor does a great job of bringing the magic of OZ to life in a way suitable to entertain grown-ups, and still manages to make the book something I'd be comfortable reading to my young son. There's Prophecy, quests, a world in need of saving, and a romance at the heart of this tale. Eric, the True Mortal summoned to Oz is one of the poles around which this story revolves, but Polychrome is a focus and anchor of the story in her own right too. And the author's love for Baum's world is evident throughout the story. I highly recommend this one.

If you enjoy well-plotted fantasy, you'll be glad you did.I was skeptical when I first heard of this project. I've been an Oz fan from childhood and wasn't at all sure that Ryk - or any other author - could remain true to the spirit and characters of the original book while writing for a modern day, mostly adult, audience. And if he could, I was afraid that it might be hard for people who didn't grow up immersed in Baum's original books to understand the settings, characters, and their history. Then I started reading the early chapters on his Kickstarter page, and got hooked. His Polychrome - and all the other characters I remember from Oz and the surrounding lands - were recognizably the same characters I remembered, just more complex and mature. The villains and motivations that drive the plot were all well-rooted in the earlier books. But he pulled it off adroitly enough that you don't need to be an Oz aficionado to be drawn in. I had to read more, and became a backer so that I'd have the chance. And the finished book is even better than I'd hoped.I've read many other writers' versions of Oz, many well written, some of them very successful in their own right. But none of them, I think, managed to be as true to the spirit of Baum's original books. What will you find here? Darkness. Horror. Villainy. But also Hope, Sacrifice, Redeption, Heroism, and Growth. Villains with believable motivations. A would-be Hero who forces himself to grow more than he believed possible. All wrapped up in a lucid, almost transparent writing style.

Unbeknownst to a population at large that drones on, one day bleeding into the next, a shadow war has irrevocably altered the world. With the United States confronted by a catastrophic threat, the tools of the trade -- politically, legally, strategically, tactically and technologically -- that have been developed during the protracted Global War on Terror are now being sharpened for a newer, more decisive conflict. Echoing the paradigm-shifting advancement made nearly three-quarters of a century earlier, a classified scientific undertaking of unprecedented scope and impact has made rapid progress while the world's attention has been focused elsewhere. And as with its historical predecessor, that R&D program has been supported and enabled by an equally ambitious paramilitary campaign. Former Delta recce sniper and OGA contractor Jared Baxter is one of the few with even the slightest understanding of what is taking place and the extent of what is at stake. Once an integral part of that effort, he's now the only one with that understanding on the outside looking in. And that has made him the prime target of the most capable, efficient, and advanced man-hunting apparatus ever conceived. A broken man, Baxter reluctantly accepts that it is his duty to awaken the world to what's happening around it before he's inevitably silenced. But to do so he desperately needs help from someone. From anyone. From you. Early reviews for Engines of Extinction: Episode I - The End & The Means: "Engines of Extinction is a fascinating walk-through of what an actual 'strategic surprise' might look like – and how America might respond. The serialized novel, a joint project with illustrator Ben Mauro, is essentially an invitation to swan dive into a yawning chasm of strategic, moral, and technological uncertainty. As you fall deeper and deeper into the darkest recesses of America’s most secret clandestine military capabilities, you are at least in interesting company with Baxter as your guide. Given the theme of strategic surprise, it would be unfair to spoil Martin and Mauro’s work by disclosing too much about the story in this review. At a minimum, the former commando was working as a private military contractor on a sort of denied-operations counterterrorism mission treadmill before being attached to a task force tackling a mission of existential importance to the United States. There are no zombies and no vampires. Science supplants supernatural for sheer terror inside the Beltway when a truly creative writer has done his or her research, as Martin has." -- August Cole, nonresident senior fellow at the Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security at the Atlantic Council and the director of the Art of Future Warfare project. "Chris Martin's new serial is the SOF equivalent of Weir's "The Martian." Just a first rate epistolary thriller." -- David Brown, co-author of The Command: Deep Inside the President's Secret Army, and the author of Red Planet Noir, winner of the 2010 Indie Book Award for Science Fiction. "I highly recommend checking out this new military fiction series by SOFREP writer Chris Martin. This is military fiction for the War on Terror generation and there is nothing else out there like it!" -- Jack Murphy, former Army Ranger and Special Forces Sergeant

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I am hooked By Jacqueline M. Martoccia If you are a fan of the military thriller or a SOF aficionado you may already have this book on your radar. I first heard about it when Chris Martin was interviewed on the SOFREP podcast regarding his non-fiction book Modern American Sniper. Toward the end of the interview the subject of Engines of Extinction came up. I was intrigued by the prospect of an exciting work of fiction written by an author with Chris's demonstrated working knowledge of the special operations community. I was less sure or enthusiastic about the sci-fi aspect of the story. I am generally more of a non-fiction or historical fiction type reader. After reading episode I, The Ends and the Means, I am at least as wrapped up in the sci-fi elements of the story as the SOF technology and trade craft bits. The details of the technologies laid out so far are mind blowing. After reading the story I took to Google and Youtube to see if any if this stuff had any basis in fact and was stunned at the implications of these very real developing technologies. I am hooked and looking forward to the next episode.Paul Martoccia

I hope mine will convince others. BUY THIS BOOK!Folks have already commented on how the content itself is unique, and believe me, it is. The meta plot, with China's ploy within a ploy to hide ploy disguised as another ploy, is ingenious. But what really sold me was the delivery. Most authors can write a third person narrative. A few talented ones can write (well) in the first person. Chris manages to write directly to YOU, the reader. The story comes running out of the gate, and it never lets up, not even for the background sequences. The insight into the SOF world (really just a peek), the entirely credible technological advances, and what a strong lead character (with flaws of his own) are a perfect combination. I'm eagerly awaiting Episode II.And in case you missed it earlier: BUY THIS BOOK!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amazing new Spec-Ops series!! By Ben P. Absolutely killer!!! I am an avid reader of modern day military american special operations books, and I have to say that it is very hard to find an author who really knows their stuff. Chris Martin's encyclopedic knowledge of this world is astounding! It's hard to believe someone knows the ins and outs of these elite military spec-ops units without having been a former operator. The plot is interesting and complex in the right way, and the format of it is very original (written in the form of a series of emails sent to the reader). All of the detail that is gone into about the U.S. military's two counter-terrorist special mission units (Delta Force and DEVGRU), the main character hailing from the former of the two, is amazingly well written. I am totally pumped up to read the next installment! I recommend this to anyone who loves military history/military thriller books. You will NOT be disappointed!

In the Windy City, how well you blow makes all the difference.

Leo, Zane and I stumbled into a bar after a long, boring work convention, on the night of the full moon. Only this bar took the old Chicago, gangster-style speakeasy just a little too far. Bangster's Paradise, and all of the Surreal Sisters books, can be read as standalones. No need to read them in order- but it might be fun.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not my thing. By Cherish Robinson-Smetek I'm really not getting the Were part of this. Hipsters?? Most Were creatures are animals. What is the culture of a WereHipster?? Having that added to the discussions Zane & Leo have with their mate.In this book, they have traveled to another city (and time??) right as it's time for them to change...the bar they end up at is the not the one they had wanted to find but have a great time there anyways. But what are the others doing? Anyone could walk into the bar during their fun...I'm not sure I would feel comfortable with this scene. I would give it a two star for that. However, the writing flows and it's easy to "see" the surroundings in my mind so I have to give it a 3 star as okay.

What if you killed yourself and discovered that the "Afterlife"might actually suck? Pogue Eldridge is a woman who does just that, and she starts to realize that this Afterlife stuff isn't at all what she expected. First, she's required to stay on a specific floor at the Sterling Hotel until renovations in Hell and Heaven are completed. That's the rules. Second, she can't go up to the nice floors where all the rich people are. More rules. And third, the food isn't that great, and there's nothing to do. Death imitating life? Pogue thinks so, and along with 15-year-old Katina, who died of a drug overdose (another form of suicide), they decide to go exploring, and bring along some of the others they've met. But because of the rules, they can only go down in the hotel elevator. And once they're in Hell, they can't leave unless "Lucy" decides they can. Join Pogue and her companions on a seriously twisted, often funny, and macabre trip through the Afterlife, where a Goth Lucifer suffers from depression, Jesus plays video games and smokes way too much pot, and Hell truly is a crappy place to be. "Ranalli is one of those rare authors who can seamlessly combine horror with the hilariously bizarre, all with a sly little smile and wink. With Ranalli's unique turns of phrase and descriptions, Suicide Girls in the Afterlife pokes fun at life, death, and the absurdity of being human. A strange, entertaining, and thought-provoking read." --Andi Marquette, author of several novels including Friends in High Places and the award-winning Land of Entrapment

Review Suicide Girls in the Afterlife is weird and fun and hauntingly bittersweet. I read it in one evening and enjoyed it very much. --Brian Keene, author of "The Rising" and "The Conqueror Worms"

From the Inside Flap "Gina Ranalli's work is light, crisp and an easy read, accessible yet eccentric, creepy yet endearing, catchy like bubblegum pop yet twisted and off-kilter."  --Mungbeing

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A solid, fun bizarro book. By J. Krall If you like weird fiction, get this book. Let me explain.First, the idea of the the afterlife limbo taking place in a hotel is great. Maybe it's because I love hotels/motels but still, it's very interesting and leads to a good story.Okay, now the good things about the novella. The characterizations are excellent. Katina the goth girl was funny. And the devil? Hilarious! But not in a dumb way either. The author has a very keen sense of humor. The dialogue is very sharp. The plot itself is at various times creepy, funny, surreal, and blasphemous. Makes for a good combination. Now for the negative. I guess my complaint is that it's too short. I can't help but get the feeling that there was some stuff that was cut out or that it was originally intended to be a longer work. The whole pervert guy in Chapter 10 seemed out of place.. but only because it was in such a short work. I would LOVE to have an extended version of this story. So, in conclusion, this is a worthwhile book that would please anyone who likes sharp wit and surrealism dealing with religion and the afterlife.Simply put this is a very entertaining bizarro novella. The author Gina Ranalli is talented and it shows so despite my small criticism, I recommend this work wholeheartedly.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. You May Think You're in Heaven Reading This Novella By Mark McKee Jr. Gina Ranalli is the high priestess of Bizarro and this is her contribution to the Bizarro Starter Kit (orange). The tale begins with the main character, Pogue, being shuttled to what she believes is heaven by a strange but kindly older gentleman. Upon arrival, she finds that both Hell and Heaven are undergoing major renovations so a hotel has been setup to cater to the recently departed souls. The souls of earth's rich people occupy the uppermost floor (akin to heaven) while the suicides and ner-do-wells occupy the bottommost. Pogue meets another young lady upon her arrival, and a young man who lives in the elevator shaft. Together, they travel the various floors of the hotel and meet Jesus and Lucy-fer.What makes this novella really interesting is the contrast between social classes Pogue witnesses after reaching the afterlife. Where the rich may not have been "godly" on earth, they still retain their status in the upper strata of Heaven after death. The suicides and scoundrels are left to while away their remaining existence in the hotel's picture of hell. Another slightly less obvious contrast can be made between "Suicide Girls..." and Sartre's play "No Exit". The conversations in "No Exit" follow three people trying to decide why they're at the hotel, while Ranalli's characters (knowing where they are) take you on the actual tour.I felt the effect of the whole was rather tainted by the remaining few paragraphs of the story, but I don't believe it should preclude the adventurous reader from delving into this bizarro novella with both arms fully extended.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun, fast, and witty vision of life after death... By Emory B. Pueschel No one knows what waits for us in the hereafter. I can only hope it's something like the Sterling Hotel in Gina Ranalli's "Suicide Girls in the Afterlife". In this novella we are introduced to Pogue, a young lady who may or may not want to end her life. Regardless, her death is labeled a suicide and she is forced to await final judgment in a modest hotel room while heaven and hell undergo renovation and expansion. Not content to sit she decides to go exploring, grabbing her new friend and fellow suicide Katina. What follows is a Divine Comedy, if Dante had a modern sense of humor. Overall this short piece is fast paced and runs the emotional gamut. At times hilarious, others disturbing, Ranalli packs a serious punch with her prose. Her inventive take on religious icons also bears mentioning, the way she gently sculpts Christ and the Devil in the Greek mold of fallible divinity while adding a contemporary flair to them. It is unfortunate that this edition is no longer in print, but can be found in the "Bizarro Starter Kit (Orange)" and digitally for Kindle. Gina Ranalli has crafted a fun, fast, and witty vision of life after death.*UPDATE: The author kindly informed me that "Suicide Girls" is still very much available for purchase in print. Apologies for the mix-up.

Winging ItKera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn't for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die. In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig "Vig" Rundstrom has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life--but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies: cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the Marines. But Vig can't give up on someone as special as Kera. With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for L.A., survival will depend on combining their strengths: Kera's discipline, Vig's loyalty... and the Crows' sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.

160 of 172 people found the following review helpful. meh By Sadie Forsythe INTERESTING CHARACTERS SEEKING PLOT TO PERFORM INMust be action packed and accepting of humour, violence and dogs. This book is a mess. It has so much potential though. The idea is interesting. The characters, though shallow and undeveloped, are funny. The world, though inconsistent, could support a series. The first chapter sets the book on the right path, even if it does deviate immediately. There is material here to make something great.Despite all of this, the book is a dud. Why? Because the closest thing it has to a plot, beyond ‘hey, here is a woman and here are a lot of volatile, hostile, RANDOM people she meets one day,’ comes out at 88% and is only introduced before the book ends on a cliffhanger. In other words, this whole 400-page book is essentially a prologue and not even a very good one.In the introduction, the author states:"The first book in my new series, Call of the Crows, and right off the bat, I want you to understand that this is not a rewrite of an old book nor is it a fleshing out of an old book. The Unleashing is a brand-new book and series, with brand-new characters, brand-new locale, and brand-new trouble. Although my book Hunting Season, which has been out since 2005, was the start of this idea…The Unleashing is me taking the whole thing to the next level, and it’s a definite stand-alone."I mention this because I think the author doth protest to much and, though she may believe it, I don’t. Or rather, either this book does depend on the previous book to support this book’s world-building or this book’s world-building isn’t very well developed. Here is an example. At one point two Crows are discussing their wings. One (Annalisa) states it took her wing 6 months to come out. The second (Maeve) said her’s took a year. Kera has been with the Crows 2 or 3 days, but someone decides her wings need to come out now. So, she arranges for the man Kera likes to accidentally walk in on her without a shirt on, somehow thereby forcing the wings to emerge. But I sat there wondering how that worked. If one character waited 6 months and another a year, then is there something biological that needs to be waited on to develop wings? If not, if it’s just the odd hunching movement a woman would make to cover her breasts when walked in on that forces ones’ wings out, then why would other characters wait so long instead of just being taught how to get their wings? It makes no sense and isn’t explained at all. I mean this in the sense that the author doesn’t even try to explain it and as a reader I had no idea why or how a Crow’s wings come into existence. I was left wondering if it’s explained in The Hunting. I wondered this on several occasions. This lack of teaching was a constant irritant to me. I understood that the Crows were supposed to be wildcards that didn’t do well with too much structure. But how is a 1,300-year-old institution supposed to survive if newcomers are treated with such open hostility, told NOTHING about their situation and literally expected to be able to fly without a word of instruction? (Especially when also being told repeatedly, “You can always trust a fellow Crow.” Um, pretty sure I saw no evidence of that.) It felt very much like all of the slapstick results of Kera’s lack of appropriate mentoring were only there for the laugh. Like, “Oh, look a topless woman is having a cat fight. Ha, ha, ha…” (And this after she already kicked some serious ass while naked.) Meh.The book also starts with Kera waking up and being an awesome asskicker. I had such high hopes for the book at this point. That asskicker doesn’t show back up until around 85%. The whole rest of the time Kera just wonders around meeting random, vapid Crows more concerned with the thickness of Kera’s thighs than fighting, doing completely random things and falling gracelessly in love with Vig. And while there was a lot of humour in these women’s shallow comments and ridiculous antics, it’s all POINTLESS and often over played. It was kind of like seeing Kera join a homicidal sorority (of the Legally Blond variety). And with the Ravens having conversations like this:“Is p***y really worth what you’re about to do?” the Raven leader asked.Vig’s brow furrowed as he immediately replied, “Yes, it is.”“He’s right,” Stieg agreed. “It is.”“Totally worth it, dude.”“He’s right, bruh. It’s absolutely worth it.”“I can’t believe you’re actually asking the question.”the Raven’s feel disturbingly like a gang of marauding frat boys. (And you’re guess is as good as mine about how many people are involved in that discussion. It’s no clearer in context than in a floating quote.)Then there is Vig, the love interest de jur and another inconsistent character. He’s said to be scary and dangerous. But we’re shown a quiet, introverted, nice guy. Don’t get me wrong, I liked him. He’s cute. But despite everyone saying how frightening he is, no one, not one single person, shows any fear of him and not once does he do anything to support this assertion. There are also about a million faceless Crows. You are constantly meeting new ones and losing track of others. And in this endless flow of Crows you get a barrage of wealthy, successful, famous people. After a while it became cheesy (and not the good kind), as if each new famous face is only there for the effect instead of any importance. All in all, I found this a weak, plotless Urban Fantasy that leans far too heavily on its attempt to be sharp and witty. Its effort is too apparent. It’s trying too damned hard and therefore fails miserably. The writing itself is fine (except for the constant head-hopping), the editing passed muster, and I appreciated having a POC as a main character (as well as most of the female side characters) but I have no desire at all to continue the series.A note on the cover: I have to ask, considering the book is about a woman (Kera) as she joins and adjusts to an all female fighting unit, why is there a man on the cover? I assume it's mean to be Vig, but he's not the main character, so why does he get to be on the cover? It seems to be putting the emphasis on the wrong character.Note: received a copy from the Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Meeks Let me get this out of the way, I really liked this book, it sets up the background for the series while still getting a bit of action and the typical insanity we expect from Shelly Laurenston. Now that is out of the way, lets talk. Compared to her other paranormal series book 1 this one probably comes in third behind DragonKin and The Pride while not being as totally insane as Magnus Pack BUT you are going to see a lot of things in this book that will remind you of those series. Now let me say that the long term story for this series looks to be superior to those other series and I can't wait to get to the next book. this one ends nicely with a decent conclusion while letting you kinda know where the next book will be going and leaving you gasping for more but this story has so many threads that she could have written 1000 pages and it would still leave you that way. There is just a LOT to be told and a host of barely sane characters to match up :)Interestingly, the author made a point in her forward to let anyone know that this is NOT a rewrite or revision of The Gathering (which I gleamed will likely never see another sequel), that this is an original series that The Gathering just gave her the basis to write. I gather this is a touchy subject but if you think this is some kind of sequel to that book, forget it.Less I forget to mention it, the romance between Kera and Vig was more like watching professional wrestling to see how they would ever get from point A to point B and it was entertaining in the same vein that the romances in DragonKin and Pride books are, kinda a ultra-violent love affair. You got to love Shelly Laurenston or none of these books will appeal to you. What I am not sure about is how large a part Kera /Vig will play in the next book, there are things that have to include them yet to be solved and yet she seems to be pushing a few of the characters in the direction of becoming couples.Bottom Line: I liked it but I did not love it. It shows a ton of promise for future exceptional books but she had to do the requisite world building and introduce a cast of about a dozen people or more (including some really insane Crows) so I think a 4 Star rating for this novel is ultimately fair. Still highly recommended but while she gives good closure to most of the actions in this book you will be left wanting more.

And two: I am a huge fan of her stories and characters. So that said, this book is a bit of a mess. Where to start? How about a plot summary. The Norse Gods (and some other pantheon gods) are real. And they have human clans that are sworn to them. One of the these clans is sworn to the Norn Skuld and they are called the Crows. Unlike the other clans, to which membership revolves around bloodlines, the Crows are made up of women with fighting spirit, who have died violently before they have really had a chance to really live, and given a second life by Skuld, along with talons and wings and powers, in return for service to her. Kera is a former marine (not ex-marine....) and works at a coffee shop. One night in an alley she is stabbed to death while trying to save someone else. Next thing she knows she is being offered the choice of death or a second life as a Crow. With one stipulation, she agrees to become a Crow. And that's when the fun is supposed to start. The Crows, in typical Laurentson style, are a loud, violent, chaotic group of women who consider themselves and fight, like sisters. At least... that's what we are told. And that's where the problems starts. We are TOLD a lot of things. We are told that the Crows are fiercely loyal to one another. We are told they are a sisterhood united with a common purpose and common history (dying violet deaths). We are TOLD that it takes as long as 6 months to a year for a crow to have her wings pop out. And yet... what we are SHOWN does not match that. The Crows do not act loyal to one another. They do not help the new member Kera out by explaining anything to her about her new world. They do not even give her a book that explains the Norse mythology (which she knows next to nothing about) which has suddenly become such a large part of her life. They do not show her how to fly. They do not even show her empathy or respect. What they SHOW her is in fact, the OPPOSITE of loyalty. As for being a sisterhood united with a common purpose. Yeah, not so much. At one point Kera is shown how the first group of crows came to be. She is shown WHY those first five women banded together. And what they fought for. The common goal of 'girl power' if you will. It was apparently very motivating for Kera. The problem is... I have no idea why it was so motivating. All it did for me is show me how LACKING in comparison the modern crows are of that same solidarity. The first crows are abused slaves, killed by their masters the Northmen, who are given a chance of revenge and the gift of rage with a second life. These are women who truly are united into a sisterhood by a true common past of slavery, and we see that even in the one short scene we are shown. But I never saw that with the modern Crows. Instead we are told about their disparate lifestyles, how some are married, how many are or were movie stars, how much they have accomplished in terms of wealth and prestige and fame as a result of having a second life. But we do not see the unity of purpose the modern crows have as sisters with a common goal or a common need for... justice? No. Revenge? No? Nothing unites these women in solidarity. No they are just individuals that have sworn themselves to service to Skuld and have to retrieve lost items for her and kill people. And that's all that they really have in common, their oath to Skuld. And it's not enough. They really have no purpose beyond that and the entitlement to slaughter whomever they want because their "rage" allows them to. And it was a bit sad honestly. And finally, there are the wings. We are told that a Crow cannot fight until she has wings. And then we are told of two different Crows who it took months to get their wings to pop out. Kera? 48 hours due to some forced modesty gimmick that was so flimsy it was frankly appalling. There was a also some romance. It was very superficial. You knew the couple were going to end up together from the start. They faced no real obstacles in this book and frankly their courtship was boring. Though "Odin's wrath" was thrown about, nothing ever comes of it.There were many attempts at Laurentson's trademark humor in this book. For the first 1/2 of the book they pretty much all fell flat. Once Brodie the dog got her revenge things started to pick up. And that was honestly the best part of this book. Brodie's revenge. That's when things picked up and started rolling with the rest of the book too (though the romance was still sub-par).I was actually going to give this book 3 stars because of Brodie's revenge (it's that good) and Jace. But then the end was a cliff hanger so... it lost a star there too.Over all, I'll keep reading it. I don't love all of Shelley's books equally at all, and while its mostly hits for me, there have been some notable misses in the past books. Even some of the ones that are back to back, like Blayne and Dee's stories I don't care for equally (Blayne's is 5 stars in my book, Dee's is barely 3). So I do expect that eventually this series will get better. There's a lot of promise here. Many of the secondary characters like Jace were interesting...so, we'll see what happens from here.
