It even talks about dynamic clothing and multiple ways to add fur to clothing items. It's laid out in a clear, sensible way that makes the tutorials easy to follow. This book would make a great text for classroom use or it would be wonderful used as a stand-alone, self-taught class at home.

With great creativity and an imagination that flows smoothly on to every page, Kathi Daley brings us a continuation of the adventures of Caitlin Hart and her friends in the Madrona Islands. Each adventure introduces a cat or kitten sent by Tansy and Bella to assist Cait in solving a mystery and/or addressing unanswered questions from earlier books in the series. In Grimm’s Furry Tail, a kitten named Emily enters Cait’s life. This story begins the day after the events in "The Mad Catter" concluded. Cody is buying the old newspaper office from the former editor who has retired and moved to the mainland. While sorting through the detritus he finds a journal and an old newspaper from 26 years ago that was never published. The front page article in that paper was written about a murder. Another newspaper with the same date was printed and distributed but it did NOT have the article about a murder! Cody and Caitlyn are curious, of course, and want to figure out what happened and why it was not published. Caitlin stumbles upon another body after solving a recent murder. The victim is the former owner of the local newspaper who was supposed to meet with her friend Cody who is buying the old newspaper office from him. Orson, the former editor, was investigating an old story. While sorting through the boxes left in the newspaper storage Cody finds a journal and 2 old newspaper stories from 26 years ago one published and one unpublished. Did a murder occur or didn’t one? Orson is returning to the island to pack up his stuff. Before he makes it to his former office, or meets with Cody, he was murdered.Typical of small town living, as questions are asked and lead to answers, the gossip mill is active, as well as scandal(s), making room for more questions, that lead to answers. There are twists and turns to the plot and mysteries abound together with the revelation of many secrets. Perhaps they should not be shared. Vivid descriptions of the beauty of the Islands, the ocean, the sunrises and the sunsets make me wish I could live there with Cait, Aunt Maggie, and all their friends. A hint of romance between Cait and Cody makes me happy. I can’t wait to read how their relationship grows!Once I started, I couldn’t stop reading this book until it was finished. Kathi Daley amazes me. She currently writes four series, including the "Whales & Tails Mystery Series.", "Zoe Donovan Series", "TJ Jensen Paradise Lake Series" and her newest series is the "Seacliff High" written for teen and adults. I highly recommend any and all of Kathi's books to anyone of any age who enjoys a good, clean mystery. As with all of Kathi Daley’s books, “Grimm’s Furry Tail” can be enjoyed without reading the earlier books in the series. However, I prefer to read the series in order. I like the continuity, as well as the setting for the novel, the small town on the island. And, of course, the cats! I highly recommend this novel for readers of all ages who enjoy cozy mysteries with a potential to include romance, in which the sleuth is a feisty young woman. There are delicious recipes included in the book, and I am looking forward to sampling a number of them.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. excellent addition to the series By Vivian F. Shane When I read that this third book in the Whales and Tails series involved a 50 year old cold case, I didn't think that the author had a hope of solving it in any realistic manner. I'm happy to say I was wrong, wrong, wrong! The mystery was well thought out and the book well paced. The truths that were revealed as a result of the solution of the mystery, I would never have guessed at. I loved little Emily and her role in the story. The author's vivid descriptions of island life place make you want to plan a vacation there immediately! I can't recommend Kathi's books highly enough for cozy mystery fans!Disclaimer: I did receive a free copy of this book from the author as a result of a contest, but I would have purchased the book anyway. I was not required to write a review but am always happy to do so for this author!

Much love for Grimm's Furry Tail By A Cozy Girl Reads It always seems that Cait always finds herself in these situations where she finds a dead body and this time there's is no exception. Cait and her friend Cody, whom also shares a romantic past with Cait are on the case of a mysterious murder that occured twenty six years ago. Cody just purchased the town newspaper, Madrona Island News from the current owner, Orson. While in the newspaper office Cody came across the unpublished article and wonders why it was never published and soon along with Cait starts to investigate and all the pieces start falling together.Cody wants to find out why this article was never published and decides to ask Orson about it so he calls him and Orson's son tells him that is already on his way to the Island. Cody then wonders why but it will all soon start to unravel. While riding her bike on the bike trail along the beach, Cait comes across a body buried in the sand that is not moving she then calls the police to report it. Cait finds it so hard to believe that there could be yet another murder after the two previous ones on her beloved Island home. They were all surprised to find that it was the previous owner of the news paper, Madrona Island News, Orson. But was he really murdered or was it just a terrible accident? and Cait is wondering if the reason why he is dead is because of Cait and Cody investigating the unpublished Orson wrote so many years ago. It is discovered that Orson was in fact murdered now Cait and Cody want to find the truth about this article and it's story and why Orson was murdered and what his connection could possibly.I would be remiss if I didn't mention a cute, adorable kitten named Emily that shows up at Cait's door. Cait once again wonders if she is here to help her solve the mystery of the article and Orson's murder, Emily's hidden clues could unlock the mystery and solve the murder if only Cait will connect the dots.A Brilliantly written cozy mystery with charming characters with a homey setting on Madrona Island it really makes you want to be there. A favorite for me is Cait's aunt Maggie's cat Sanctuary where she takes in abandoned and helps solve the over population of feral cats on the island by providing them good homes and hope that her character is brought more to the forefront and developed in future books considering her past and what she has been through. Kathi Daley never fails with the telling of this tail and of the mystery and murder solving adventures of Cait and her friends and residents of Madrona Island. Looking forward to reading and reviewing the next in this series.

88 of 96 people found the following review helpful. It breaks my heart to say it, but this was really disappointing. By Michael H Stanley I loved Ancillary Justice. The characters were great, the timing and plotting were incredibly thought out, subtleties were important but not pushed too hard, and there was a climax.I hate to say it, but this book was disappointing. AJ was able to be an intimate character study, introduce this foreign concept of ancillaries and ship AIs, and make us care and sympathize with ancillaries, and also play out a plot on an epic scale. AS does none of those things. No new concepts, no important plotline, no Anaander Mianai throughout the entire book, and no recourse for the murder of the Presger translator. How is that not where this book went? Who cares about a corrupt captain smuggling ancillaries? That would get two paragraphs in AJ.I love the omnipotent/multiple viewpoint Breq has, and the way it allowed situations to unfold in the first novel, but AS just does it because it feels obligated to. The pieces don't really intermingle, it's really just a mechanic to have three unrelated stories going on.The second book in a trilogy is what makes it a trilogy. It expands the scope, shifts the momentum, introduces twists to issues that seemed resolved previously, and sets some expectation for the final piece. This book unfortunately did none of those things. Also, the gender thing, which was jarring (in a good way) in the first novel, just didn't make sense in this one. What's the penis festival about? And if you're going to go directly at the issue of "so are there men and women?" why is there not an actual answer? I like the "she" as a standard pronoun use and it frankly made me realize a big bias I didn't realize I had, but there was no similar mechanism in this book.AJ was so great that I'll read the third anyways, but this was a big letdown. I realize it was a hard act to follow AJ, but this felt mailed in.

Main plot stagnates By Indy Reviewer At one point late in Ancillary Sword, a character asks the protagonist, "How (does) any of this (matter) when we have a civil war going on that might find its way here?" Breq's answer placates that character, but after finishing Ancillary Sword many readers will likely find themselves asking the same question with a far less satisfactory response. 2 stars. The award winning Ancillary Justice combined space opera, social commentary, and shifting perspectives to create one of the more original works of science fiction in some years. While there was some criticism of pacing and depth, most readers felt those negatives were offset by the unique worldbuilding.Unfortunately, Ancillary Sword retains most of the negatives without the positives. The plot summary: newly promoted Fleet Captain Breq proceeds to Athoek station, where by virtue of her superior rank she can order nearly everyone to do pretty much whatever her whims demand. Anyone who disagrees? Clearly, they're morally and intellectually bankrupt, and Breq has near omnipotence to not only steamroll them but to miraculously contain their enmity. (There's probably an ironic meta here someplace comparing Breq's leadership to Anaander's eternal dictatorship, but this is almost certainly unintentional.)While there, she uncovers a few conspiracies, spends an awful lot of time working towards social justice for various oppressed locals, and on occasion tries to make up with Awn's sister. The big picture stuff that drove the plot of Ancillary Justice disappears and the book stagnates.Civil war? Almost nonexistent for most of the book. Alien menace? The introduction of what is easily the most fascinating secondary character in either book ends up devolving into an almost irrelevant transitional plot device. Villains? Two dimensional and not particularly subtle, especially as any ambiguity over the morality of the Radchaai gets erased as the book proceeds. And Awn's sister? While the author previously stated her protection would be Breq's main priority in this book, once she began writing, Leckie appears to have abandoned that idea. Not only is Basnaaid a very minor character, but somehow the author couldn't come up with a subplot that puts her at even moderate peril. Those who loved the first book will probably find enough here to tolerate Sword, but the bottom line is that this just isn't a particularly enthralling sequel. Perhaps the final book of the trilogy will put all of this in context, but as a standalone this falls badly short. 2 stars.

By David Hendry The first book was good and I expected the second to evolve into the enormous established potential, but instead was lost in a backwater station with very little action.

So much fun and for a great cause at The National Breast Cancer Foundation. Recommend it to everyone and what a great read.

An updated version of the best-selling therapist-to-coach transition text.

With his bestselling Therapist As Life Coach, Pat Williams introduced the therapeutic community to the career of life coach, and in Becoming a Professional Life Coach he and Diane Menendez covered all the basic principles and strategies for effective coaching. Now Williams, founder of the Institute for Life Coach Training (ILCT), and Menendez, former faculty at ILCT―both master certified coaches―bring back the book that has taught thousands of coaches over the past eight years with all-new information on coaching competencies, ethics, somatic coaching, wellness coaching, and how positive psychology and neuroscience are informing the profession today. Moving seamlessly from coaching fundamentals―listening skills, effective language, session preparation―to more advanced ideas such as helping clients to identify life purpose, recognize and combat obstacles, align values and actions, maintain a positive mind-set, and live with integrity, this new edition is one-stop-shopping for beginner and advanced coaches alike. Beginning with a brief history of the foundations of coaching and its future trajectory, Becoming a Professional Life Coach takes readers step-by-step through the coaching process, covering all the crucial ideas and techniques for being a successful life coach, including: • Listening to, versus listening for, versus listening with • Establishing a client’s focus • Giving honest feedback and observation • Formulating first coaching conversations • Asking powerful, eliciting questions • Understanding human developmental issues • Reframing a client’s perspective • Enacting change with clients • Helping clients to identify and fulfill core values, and much, much more. All the major skillsets for empowering and “stretching” clients are covered. By filling the pages with client exercises, worksheets, sample dialogues, and self-assessments, Williams and Menendez give readers a hands-on coaching manual to expertly guide their clients to purposeful, transformative lives. Today, with more and more therapists incorporating coaching into their practices, and the number of master certified coaches, many with niche expertise, growing every year, Becoming a Professional Life Coach fills a greater need than ever. By tackling the nuts and bolts of coaching, Williams and Menendez equip readers with the tools and techniques they need to make a difference in their clients’ lives.

Allen, MCC I highly recommend "Becoming a Professional Life Coach" for both new and experienced coaches, and for anyone interested in learning the "coach approach" in their lives, business and communities. Today coaching skills are an invaluable resource, both in the workplace and for personal fulfillment, yet there are still millions that don't even know what coaching is or how to become one. Pat and Diane deliver an easy to read, comprehensive guide offering history, theory and practical application of the most potent skills used by professional life coaches worldwide. This book addresses a great need in the marketplace. As a veteran coach, it was refreshing to expand my own depth of knowledge on skills I've been using for years. They describe the skills, and when and how to use the skill most effectively. I also love how they included the developmental stages of consciousness, which help people recognize how ready someone is to change, and the best way to support someone to the next stage. They've also included sections on identifying life purpose, creating fulfillment and working on practical issues like money. The case studies integrate real-life examples to demonstrate how a skill or process is put into action.Since Patrick Williams is the founder of his own coaching school, I expected a cookie cutter curriculum from his own school's teachings. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how thoroughly they integrated and referenced the best disciplines from a variety of coaching schools, as well as useful and distinguished models from the field of psychology. It is no wonder that Patrick Williams is known as "The Ambassador for Life Coaching." As a veteran life coach, I applaud Patrick for inspiring thousands more to integrate a "coach approach" in their everyday lives and/or become a life coach themselves. The world could use a few more life coaches, and this is a perfect place to begin.Mary E. While reading Cursed last year, you could tell that Emma and Zack had a strong history with one another. It might have only been a week, but it was an intense week, and now we get the whole story!Emma is called to Charleston, SC to help Zack in a child abduction case. This is the third one that's occurred in a certain amount of time. Emma had been assisting via phone calls and now she's in the city to help as a third child had recently gone missing. The previous taken boys turned up dead after more time passed, and Zack is hoping that with Emma's help a third death can be prevented.I actually visited Charleston last year and it was quite a sight to see, and getting to return there through this story was awesome! I recognized street names and other locations that popped up and that's always fun for me when reading!Anyway, this prequel novella was everything I was hoping for! There was a great mystery to solve and I kind of thought I pinpointed out the suspect at one particular point and it turns out I was partly right too!The supernatural elements in this story are kind of hidden. All those paranormal beings are in the closet in this world, so Emma must keep her secret, secret. And Zack never reveals his secret to Emma, she just knows. The pacing to this one was a little slow, but in a sense, it works. I'll explain; Emma and Zack get right to following up leads and talking to witnesses and they hit dead-ends at nearly every turn, hence why it seemed slow. But when they get a major break in the case, things start to pick up and pick up fast! The ending was definitely bittersweet, for if you've read Cursed, you know what happens here. But if you haven't read that yet, which I will say you should because it was freaking awesome!, then I won't say what happens, but it's pretty obvious as you're reading along! Well, that happens! And then the aftermath happens. Hence the bittersweetness of the ending. But then I just have to remember that we have Cursed and the story really isn't over at all. It's just beginning!Overall Rating 5/5 stars

This has the stuff to make a great series. Smart, sexy and compelling lead characters and interesting mysteries along with terrific writing and world building this is a can’t miss. Captured tells us of the case where Zack and Emma meet. This is a full story. You aren’t left hanging but you are left wanting more.

Stein’s Anna Strong Vampire Chronicles series, at the end it had a preview for Cursed. So I read it, and was interested enough to mark it as a check out this book in the future. Well, it took a while to get to Cursed and I discovered there was a novella that was released after Cursed. A novella is a wonderful way to get a look into a series potential, so I got it first. Not disappointed at all. This novella is well written, giving the reader a glimpse into The Fallen Siren Series. This novella tells about the missing child case that first brings Emma, the titular character of the series, meets Zach, a werewolf and F.B.I. agent. The story flows nicely, though there isn’t much adventure, or drama one isn’t bored. The reader follows the case as it is revisited by Emma, who is consulting for the F.B.I. A creative way to have the mystery laid out, without becoming confusing to the reader. This novella is worth reading, even if you have read Cursed.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A good first book in a fantasy series, with a few trip-ups. By Faltho Disclosure: I received a free copy of Call of Kythshire in exchange for an honest review of the book.I really wish I could give this 3 and a half stars. There are plenty of good things about this book, which I will get to a bit later, however, there are some drawbacks that make me iffy about giving this book a four star review. Overall, this was a good read that is worth a look by anyone who is interested in the Fantasy genre. Especially those who are fans of strong female characters.Pros: The major pro for me, especially since this is a fantasy genre book, was that this book had some good world building. It doesn't simply build a story over traditional fantasy ideas, but instead creates ideas of it's own which play important roles in the plot. This includes a very interesting twist on magic and the origins/impacts of magic. The characters are another good aspect of this book. As for the main characters they are interestingly developed and though somewhat predictable, still quite lively. There is also a rich grouping of secondary characters that add another layer to this novel. This is especially true of the fairies. The last pro that I feel should be mentioned is that this book had nice readability and should appeal to a wide range of audiences. Too often fantasy is written far too mature, or too childish. The author does a good job of not talking down to her audience, which leads to this readability range.Cons: The biggest problem that this book suffers from is pacing. There are parts which go by far too quickly, where they really could have been drawn out a bit more for the experience of the reader. Then there are parts which seem to drag on forever seemingly without adding anything to the story. Many fantasy readers expect for lots of information or sometimes a slow start, but there are times when this goes beyond this. While the characters are a great part of this book, some are also a con. This is not due to the character themselves but the lack of development that goes along with them. I found myself in the beginning having trouble keeping many of the characters straight, and then once I got used to the myriad of people, it seemed like they faded into the background.Lastly, I felt like this could have been developed so much more, and not just some of the characters. There was so much more world building that could have been put in place where the book drags. This in some ways makes me want to read the second book in the series even more. However, it also makes me wary that some of my major questions (about abilities, magic, etc) as a reader may not be addressed.Neither pro nor con: I wanted to also mention that there are pictures throughout the book (not at the end of every chapter oddly enough), which may add a dimension for some readers. For me, however, this was fun but didn't add much to the experience of reading this book.

By Miri First, I want to say that I'm not a fan of 'fairy tales' and when I started this book, I didn't know what to expect. Now? I want a fairy friend! "Wanna play?" YES!I loved how the author brought the fairies to life, with each having their own personality. I loved their world, how everything was so different in Kythshire. I think I'm in love with the fairies. That's the only real way to put it. Another thing I found fascinating was how the magic was explained: what it did to the mages if they drew in it too much. The beginning ceremony put me in a good mood for the book. I learned to know Azaeli, and it was fun to read. After that, it seemed to slow a bit. I'm thinking that I may have been too anxious to learn more, because as soon as Flit made her first apparition, it pulled me in. From there, I entered the charming and alluring world of fairies. The plot advanced at a steady pace and soon I discovered the lurking threat along with Azi, Rian, and Flit.I'd recommend not only for fans of fairies and pure fantasy, but also for the world building.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful adventure with a great lead By C. McMullen Right from the start, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The action and pacing was great, pulling me immediately into the head of the main character, which was both fun and frustrating. Azi is everything a strong female lead should be. She is headstrong, but not reckless, and has a solid head on her shoulders despite being a fighter. Although this is Azi's story, there are quite a few other characters, all of whom are well written and multidimensional. I had no issue with keeping the names and personalities straight, as can often be a problem with an ensemble cast, especially in fantasy settings. One particular character does try to steal the show. That would be Flit, the fairy who brings new meaning to the term colorful sidekick. The story itself is an original take on the use and abuse of magic. For a light tale, it delves into some intriguing and dark issues. I rather enjoyed the fact that it handled the heavier subject matter without resorting as most fantasy does to the 'dark' or 'adult' realm, keeping the tone appropriate for a younger audience while still being interesting to an older crowd. Also worth noting: the author is also an artist and has added illustrations to the book. While some say they don't add to the experience, I disagree. If anything, it brought me back to the chapter books of my childhood that often had a few illustrations interspersed. I'm glad to see that this tradition carries into the digital age and besides, the illustrations in this book are woks of art. Truly beautiful.I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

For two thousand years The Fallen have walked the earth. Called vampires by some, nosferatu by others and demons by the Church, they exist as mortal enemies of human kind, living in the shadows, feeding off human blood and hiding from the Holy Order of the Righteous Fire: hunters commissioned by the Vatican to rid the Earth of their hateful scourge. Most of the Fallen live a dark, barren life, preying on the weak for they’re only pleasure: a brief high brought on by drinking blood, where emotions and human desire can be felt. Christian Hannover is one of them, but for seventeen hundred years he’s resisted the call of the blood and sought to find some hope in the barren darkness, some purpose to explain the curse. With the help of some unlikely allies he’s seen the prophecy of the Midnight Sun begin to unfold, he’s discovered the true source of the curse that affects him and he now seeks to put an end to it by destroying Drake, the king of the undead, the dark Adam who cursed them all. Having wounded Drake in the bayous of Louisiana, Christian want’s nothing more than to find his old master and finish him, lifting the curse once and for all. But strange visons suggest he’s on the wrong path and the sudden arrival of FBI agent Kate Pfeiffer puts him in a difficult position. To save Kate’s life, Christian infected her with the venom of his kind. Her wounds healed and she became otherwise immortal, but she’s now caught in the Half-Life: the agonizing transformation that accompanies the fall, as human warmth, emotion, and conscience are stripped away. Knowing she’ll likely die or destroy herself before the change is complete, Christian takes her with him. If he can find and destroy Drake, Kate will be healed like all the others. But Drake has not been idle. Not only is he recovering from his wounds, he’s now on the trail of a weapon called the Dark Star, a weapon so powerful that no man, angel or vampire can stand before it. As old as recorded history, and hidden for thousands of years, in Drake’s hand the Dark Star would become a weapon of subjugation with the power to destroy not only Christian and the Righteous Fire but the Angel of Redemption itself. With the FBI and Righteous Fire hot on their trail, and Drake lurking in shadows up ahead, Christian and Kate race to find the Dark-Star. Danger stalks them on all sides, but the secrets buried in their hearts may prove to be the most deadly weapons of all.

It picks up where the first book left off and runs wild with mystery and suspense. Christian goes through the ringer in his search for Drake, and the climactic showdown is brutal and awesome. I can't wait to see how things are wrapped up in book #3.

In a world where supernatural creatures openly exist, who can blame them for coalescing in one of the most fascinating and erotic places on earth? Welcome to New Orleans. Laurant likes sex... Maybe that’s an understatement, pleasures of the flesh are more than enjoyment, they’re a necessity. He’d starve without them. Problem is, he isn’t attracted to women, and in his family, if you get your sex from men, you’re the wrong type of demon. The (unfortunate) life of an incubus isn’t all orgies and orgasms. That life is about to get a lot more interesting, though, when he catches sight of a lost and alone human who definitely needs his help…doesn’t hurt that he’s hot as the NOLA summer with just as many mysteries about him. A stranger to himself... What are you supposed to do when you blink your eyes and realize you have no idea who or where you are? Pretty sure the answer isn’t trust a sex demon with your life…all things considered that may be the lesser of two evils… About Pulp Friction 2015 Lee Brazil ~ Havan Fellows ~ Parker Williams ~ Laura Harner The Pulp Friction 2015 Altered States Collection. The Pulp Friction team has brought us to The Big Easy, New Orleans for a very Paranormal Pulp Friction 2015 and I am loving it.Tom Webb and Laura Harner had begun this premise a few years ago, world building Altered States. The rest of the team has jumped in and we are going to have a very interesting year me thinks.Imagine opening your eyes one morning and not know where you were or who you are?????Worse imagine opening your eyes and be standing on a street corner, nt knowing where you are, how you got there and who you are?????Laurant named him Vic at first for Victim as he saw him being harassed by another paranormal. Laurant an incubus demon feeds on humans for sex . He had been brought up by his kind to better let your food live than kill one every feeding. For a reason unknown Laurant felt the need to protect and brought Vic home. It was there guests arrived for the weekly poker game.Only time will tell whose on first, but Havan gave us some of the boys we already know who were at the game and it was great to see Jet the were and Danny our cop working the odd squad. We have been invited to Spend a year with the creatures that go bump in the night…fighting for their rights to exist and protecting the innocents of The Big Easy.I am so there….remember there Four authors. Four Series. Twenty books. One supernatural finale.Review by Gloria LakritzSr Reviewer and Review Chair for the Paranormal Romance Guild

Of course not, Havan didn't write him that way *grins*. He's an incubus who likes men more than women, and to the rest of his kind, that's not acceptable. Laurant is perfectly okay with breaking those rules, especially when he meets sinfully delicious Gun, a man who appeared on the street with no idea of who he is, where he came from, or how he got here. A mystery, indeed. Not just a mystery, though. Suspenseful, intriguing, exciting, and filled with some wonderful sexual innuendo. But my darling Havan left me hanging at the end. Dammit, girl, you know what that does to me! *smirks* I love Laurant and Gun, and can't wait to read more of them.NOTE: If you've been buried alive for the past few years, you might not have heard about the incredible series by the name of 'Pulp Friction'. It is an interconnected series, written by four talented authors, each of them writing five books within the year, and rounding it out with one grand finale book written by all four. This year's series is set in the same arena, so to speak, as Laura Harner and T.A. Webb's 'Altered States' series and is an introduction to more of the supernatural that those two authors began. PF 2015, as it is known, is written by Lee Brazil, Havan Fellows, Parker Williams, and Laura Harner, and ultimately should be read in that order. So if, indeed, you've been away from the human world, you're forgiven for not knowing this, and not having read the other books. If you've just been lazy…well. There is no forgiveness for you.NOTE: This book was provided by the author for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews

By Becky C Imagine wandering around a New Orleans full of preternaturals and humans not knowing who you are or how you got there. Lost on Burgundy Street, a man finds himself in the care of a relatively young (200 years old) incubus and adopts the name Burgundy, or Gun. Laurant, the incubus, finds himself unexpectedly unable to dial back his affect on everyone around him, which causes wildly inappropriate sexual desire to run rampant. Hmmm. That might explain a lot about New Orleans. But back to the story...There are murders going on that are being blamed on the supernaturals, which could lead to a war between species. Who is the stranger so talented with potions and why does he want Gun?What would an Altered States version of Trivial Pursuits look like? Maybe the poker players will be playing something else this week. Fun!I love Laurant. OK, that's supposed to happen with an incubus, but he's a great MC in this series. And just who is Gun?Havan Fellows writes mystery with a twist in Blind Stud and I am so eager to read the next story in her King of Hearts series within the Pulp Friction 2015 series.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Reviewed at The Hungry Monster Book Review By Hungry Monster Sam Crane is an information speculator that arrives at the murder scene of a high society doctor, Xian Mako. His only clue is a pair of antique galvanic spectacles that the doctor was holding at the time he was killed. Sam investigates the homicide through a commercially dystopian future where advertisements are mandatory, planned obsolescence is ubiquitous, and augmented reality is the new craze. To solve the murder he must navigate through corporate bureaucracy that is, at best, overly litigious, and deadly at its worst. Sam finds that the doctor’s murder is only a small cog in a much larger machine that Sam has only glimpsed the shadow of. He must step further into the augmented reality trend and go to the cutting edge of corporate advertisements to unravel a mystery that threatens to simultaneously make everyone’s life better and turn them into slaves for marketing companies. The book depicts a neo-noir dystopian San Francisco, in which technology and marketing has invaded everyday life. A new form of marketing has emerged called Oversight which overlays an augmented reality on top of everything you see. It’s manufactured by a powerful mega-corporation, but is sought after by terrorists and government agencies alike for nefarious purposes. The book describes a beautifully bleak future with details I never thought of; “He stumbles into the shower, but the water is off again. Retribution by City Water, no doubt, for buying the basic service package without the pipe-security upgrade.” Sam has a virtual assistant that helps him access the internet along with other things, but she also schedules advertisements based on where he’s going and what he’s doing so that the advertisements he passes on the street are completely personalized. Which is cool, but what makes it scary is that it’s almost mandatory, to the point where he has to pay sponsors for quiet time where he receives no advertisements at all. This leads to amusingly appropriate advertisements later in the novel when Sam is running for his life from people that want to kill him and then is shown advertisements for running shoes. It’s the small details that really sell the authenticity of the world, like clothes that last a certain amount of time before they disintegrate and you have to buy new ones; capturing the epitome of planned obsolescence. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, although I found Sam’s character dry at times, the world is meticulously created and the ideas that are presented are entertainingly thought provoking. It’s a murder mystery story at its core, but the story regularly detours into commentary on socialism and commercialism that doesn’t do much to move the story along. The story is well written with language often becoming poetic before coming back to being candid and incisive. This was a short novel that hit all the right notes for me. There are eight fairly long chapters, but it feels like no words are wasted to create a world that resonates with the style of Blade Runner and the world building of Neromancer.https://hungrymonsterreview.wordpress.com/

I was hooked after the first few pages and enjoyed every bit start to finish. Hope Claburn has success with it and continues to produce good reads with great technical insight for those of us that are uninformed. The future is now aspect of "Oversight" left me with a chilling concern that I will never be able to really grasp even the basics of the technology developing around me but the book made it interesting to speculate. I got to know Sam and hope to see him again soon.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. fun and stimulating read By Amazon Customer This combination of hardboiled and science fiction works as an all-too-plausible look at a near-future society, where advertising, product placement, and brand awareness infiltrate every aspect of life. The core of the story is an engaging detective tale, but really its the future-world that is so well done here. When the protagonist has to please his health insurance company by going to the gym, while simultaneously working to pay off his energy usage debt via treadmill, the glimpse at a dystopian future possibility is scarily real (and this is only a momentary event in the story -- this type of new modern reality flows throughout this book). If you see a Kickstarter for a bluetooth-enabled rice cooker and wonder 'what on earth is that for?' maybe it's for just the kind of over-connected global network of things and people depicted in this book (and I am *not* a conspiracy theorist). In the end, the combo of thought-provoking near-future technology, a main character reminiscent of so many hard-boiled detectives from the past, and a murder mystery with tendrils in both worlds make this a well-written, fun and stimulating read. Echoes of Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, a bit of Ernest Cline's more recent Ready Player One, with layers of hardboiled fiction gluing the mix together.Though this novel has been available for over a year, I hope that protagonist Sam Crane reemerges in a sequel some day soon!
