Chapter Hang I am not, nor will I ever be, a morning person, mused Admiral Fontoon, subliminally noting that it was perhaps the only thing of which he felt truly certain. He winced and made a sucking sound through his clenched teeth as he gingerly touched the bump that had risen on his head. He was hanging upside down, swaying gently now after swinging wildly for some time. His arms hung limply in mute surrender. One leg extended to the side and bent like a branch that did not know where to grow, drifting half-heartedly, searching to no avail for a plausible position in which to await death or redemption. The one straight and rigid limb was his other leg, which had a tightened noose around the ankle. From there the rope looped through a pulley attached to the ceiling, and routed thence to a spinning spool at the foot of his bed, anchored firmly to the floor with steel bolts. It was the furious spinning of the spool that had yanked the rope so suddenly, resulting in the tightening of the ankle noose and the unceremonious hoisting of Admiral Fontoon. The entire apparatus had been triggered electronically by Fontoon’s alarm clock; more specifically, it had been triggered by the seventh sounding of the snooze alarm, a result, in turn, of Fontoon’s obstinacy, and of his lethargy. Son of a bitch, thought Fontoon, dangling. He was supposed to have gotten out of bed before all this. That was the whole idea: A clock to inspire fear, ergo motion. Fontoon spoke several profanities aloud to his uncaring apartment, and punched the air viciously, which caused him to spin. He felt the lurch of nausea and struggled to control it. He did not think he could bear either the sound or the sight of his vomit hurtling out of his mouth and splashing onto various of his possessions some nine feet below, and he especially did not relish the thought of cleaning it all up. Agh, or the taste of it, he thought, which only made it harder to control. Admiral Fontoon looked around the room while the spinning gradually subsided, trying to get a fix on something for as long as he could, to combat the dizziness. Directly below him was an imitation Oriental rug that had caused bitterness at how quickly it had begun to look dingy. Must everything be cheap? Must everything be tawdry?

The author's creativity, keen intelligence, and sense of humor (and, sense of the absurd) shine through. His ability to convey his characters' thoughts and reactions (which are often the exact opposite from what they say aloud) are unusually insightful. His powerful life observations and take on human foibles are presented in charming, funny stories and characters. I love any book that makes me laugh out loud, and this one often did. Highly recommended for Schoneboom's original, funny, insightful take on life.

Imagine the delightfully clever Goon Show as written by a poetically precise Douglas Adams, all at once mocking and revering the egos and stereotypes exactingly analysed while performing a scissor-sharp bit of social commentary to boot. This book will lift your wibblies.

Great finish to this part of the series By Amazon Customer I picked up my first book in this series after being hooked by the Orphan series and loved the way it changed the whole direction of the story but remained in a familiar set of worlds. This book was a great finish dwelling on the cold war aspects of relationships which the author openly admits are reflective of our own. Like all good science fiction books it sets familiar themes where we can explore them and explore our reactions to them from a distance. Loved the characters, loved the final linkages, but ould have loved the ending to be a little more drawn out as it all finished with a bang. Great book, keep writing

The initial volume in this sequence is Overkill. This volume also contains the short story Mole Hunt(2011), set in the same universe, but with different characters.In the previous volume, Polian was checking an operation in the arctic circle when someone fired on the Tressen troops. He sent out a skimmer to search through a blizzard for the intruder. They couldn't find anything in the snowstorm, but accidentally collided with the shooter.The intruder was taken to Tressel for hospitalization. The Tressens thought that the patient was an Iridian assassin. Yet Polian believed that the patient was a Trueborn operative.The operative remained unconscious in the hospital. Polian brought in a Yavi interrogator to tap the memories of the unconscious operative. The specialist brought the patient back to consciousness and drained ninety percent of the pertinent memories.Howard talked Jazen back into Human Union Intelligence. Kit had vanished on Tressel while investigating an alliance between the Yavis and the Tressens. He was concerned by the alliance, but was more worried about the disappearance of Kit.In this novel, Jazen Parker is the son of Jason Wander and Mimi Ozawa. He was born on Yavet without official authorization and then served in the Legion as a tanker. After the grezzen incident, he became a special-operations case officer for the Human Union. He is Kit's partner.Catherine Trentin Born is a Trueborn from Earth. Kit is a Colonel in the US Army, seconded to the Peacekeeping dForces of the Human Union. He was forced from his prior positions and all his know bank accounts were forfeited.In this story, Jazen has been summoned to the Okefenokee Chemical Weapons Test Range. When he arrives, he finds one soldier playing possum, a wrecked multi-terrain transport, and a flame thrower. The fires are slowly dying down.Jazen hears Mort roaring nearby, so he walks out to communicate with the telepath. He could have mindtalked from where he was, but his personal presence is necessary to hold Mort's attention. Mort has mindheard that Cutler was pardoned and released.Three days later, Jazen attends a political affair. Kit has just returned and he is much more interested in her presence than the affair itself. They find a bed near Kit's sailboat.Later, Howard tells them that the new president is cutting his department. No more raids against Yavi excursions. Jazen points out that if the Javis get C-drive, then the only alternative would be nuking the planet.Being a former native of Yavet, he knows that most of the population are not enemies of the Trueborn. Kit suggests that Cutler may be working with the Yavis. Jazen believes otherwise.On Rand, Cutler is using the alias of "Quartermain" and Polian is using "Hitchcock". Quartermain and Hitchcock are hunting with Otto and a hotel guide. When they get back to the hotel, Cutler makes a proposition to Polian. The Yavis will get classified blueprints of the C-drive if they do some favors for him.After returning to Yavet, Polian checks on Cutler. Then he has a talk with Gill. The two decide to deal with Cutler without informing their superiors.Polian gets Orion released from prison. In her effects, he plants a letter from Jazen. Orion sends two messages offplanet, one to Jazen and the other to Jason and Mimi.This tale brings Jason and Mimi to Rand. Otto brings them the letter from Orion. They make plans to return to Yavet.Jazen gets his message from Orion on Mousetrap. He and Kit have a dispute. He leaves for Yavet. Polian gets more than he expects."Mole Hunt" (2011) takes a Yavi crew onto Dead End to salvage the C-drive out of a crashed fighter. They run into trouble with the flora and fauna.The next installment in this sequence has not yet been announced on Amazon.Highly recommended for Buettner fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of special ops, dangerous beasts, and a bit of romance. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Continues the excellent story in the Orphan’s Legacy Universe By James Connolly This is the 3rd book in Orphan’s Legacy series. It continues the stories of Jazen Parker and company, and involves events during a second Cold War between Earth and Yavet. What stuck out about this book were the historical parallels to the cold war, with lots of tidbits about the original cold war, spying + covert actions. It was a very entertaining continuation of the story, involving all of the characters from the past two books. I would say it has a bit less action sequences as the previous books, but made up for that by containing a great story. It actually prompted myself to look up some true life Cold War events on Wikipedia (The author instructed to look it up).The Orphan’s series contains a well fleshed out, interesting universe, and I hope to see more books involving its characters. And like Buettner’s other books, it contains great humor and entertaining writing, making it an enjoyable read.

Good Story, Fast Pace & Interesting By LJ This book was enjoyable to read, with lots of action, multiple scenerio's and four main characters, although two were not developed to the extent of Gitty & Elgin. Nevertheless, this story is about a lonely man who sets out to discover what 'Lost Angeles' is all about, in hopes of finding a new and exciting life. His journey provides him with plenty of danger, sorrow, hope, love and happiness. This story depicts one man's innocence and timidity against the world. A man who's heart is big, and many times, his morals and values righteous.The setting is at least 10 years into a post-apocalyptic event. We don't know what happened, but it doesn't matter and the lack of that knowledge will not take away from the story line. I found myself cheering for Elgin and hoping for the best for him. The author does a great job in presentation and conveying a story with lessons, if one is willing to look that deep into it. The author also did a great job in placing Elgin 'into character' and depicting him for who he was.This book is a nice read.

A Post Apocalyptic Love Story By Cathy Murray Elgin is the narrator in 600 Miles and he is on a journey from Arizona to California hoping to take in the city of Los Angeles in the process and his main problem is that he is walking there because the story is set several decades into the future in a world of complete chaos. The cause of the apocalypse is hinted at and appears to have been all out war between the state and the people but this all happened years ago; Elgin only knows a hand to mouth existence in a world which has sunk to basest depravity and his frequent dispassionate observations of "skellies" tells you how bad things are.The story is Elgin's life over the several months of his journey; the places he passes through; the people he meets. It is a love story in the most unlikely of circumstances and an exploration of Elgin's personality as he tries to cope with the tribulations and challenges of survival. The story is full of unexpected developments and at times is tense, exciting and shocking. It is a well written novel but what I thought was exceptionally good was the way Elgin's voice comes through with a slow deliberation resonant of a time much earlier than the Armageddon.The ending of the book is, I suspect, deliberately vague and lends itself to a sequel which I for one would be quick to download.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Realistic By rcdac 600 miles by G.P. Grewal is one of the most realistic dystopian novels I have read. The setting is harsh with a sense of hopelessness. The plot and pace are spot on and keep the reader turning pages. All of the characters are well developed and three-dimensional.Grewal tells the story through the protagonist, Elgin. He is a kind of every man, not heroic in fact a bit cowardly, but you can't help rooting for him despite his flaws. Grewal gave him such a unique voice and he tells the story in such a way that the reader becomes emotionally invested in him. A writer that can make the reader feel any emotion is a good writer and G.P. Grewal is that good of writer.The one shortcoming of the story and it's rather significant, it's the ending. The ending of the story is rather disjointed and ambiguous which left this reader a bit disappointed.Do I recommend 600 miles to others? Yes with a caveat. I recommend it because the story was good enough to emotionally draw me into it, quite a rarity these days. The caveat is the ambiguous ending, it may leave some readers unsatisfied.

I have used the heck out of it. I found it far exceeded my expectations considering the price.The book was also a refreshing book because it was not bogged down by having an Objective-C history. There are so many books that need to be re-written from scratch because the authors don't have the time to update them correctly. Most of the O'Reilly, Big Nerd Ranch, and Addison Wesley publishers had author's that did an awesome job with Objective-C books, but they are tomes and will be very difficult for the authors to just throw away all the material from the Objective-C days, but they are going to have to.You also get the Kindle version of this book free with the Amazon Matchbook program if you purchase the printed version.There is no code download and the online exercises are not worth going out to, but the book is definitely worth getting so you have something in your hands on Swift 2.0.It is a good cover to cover read as well as a great reference.

What A Thrilling Vacation,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Glad You Enjoyed Your Stay,, By Robin Lee It was a nice surprise that "First Activation" wasn't a redundant "zombie novel"..Right from the first chapter I was sucked into this story..What a suspenseful, intense, bloody, thrilling vaction I had with brothers Jack and Harry..Non-stop action right until the last paragraph of the page...Then fade to black..(If your into artistic independent films that is the way they end sometimes)..Loved the originality and storyline it was refreshing..Great characterization of both brothers from England..My first thoughts of the two brothers on the plane is that they were 30 something big boys looking for fun..Both were ex-military that were never involved in any combat..The author slowly developed them along their horrifying journey where they turned into smart, grown men with a tactical plan..No matter what the shocking turnout is in the end Jack and Harry were my heroes..Perfect depiction of a war torn NY, especially if you as a reader have grown up there..When the flight landed at JFK airport you could feel the panic and terror spilling from the pages...Great opening scene and excellent authors..The premise of the novel is exactly like above so I am not repeating it..I will say that Genesis Alliance was like an underground cult and conspiracy that took many years of planning..As all evil masterminds want is to overthrow the govenment to create that ever, elusive New World Order..Will Jack, Harry and Lea get there in time before the second activation is set to go off...While some may have mixed feelings about this book or the ending..I found this book had everything death, survival, at times witty humor, very emotional and the best part "Revenge"...I can't wait to read something else by these authors in the future...

I hate to buy a book and then have it turn out to be bad. This one was only 99 cents and even though no one had reviewed it yet, the description sounded interesting so I took a chance. I'm really glad I did! The writing is good, and the book keeps you guessing. It held my interest and even though the characters weren't as fleshed-out as they could've been, they were likeable (the main ones anyway) and interesting. To me that's important, because if you don't care about or like the characters, you won't care what happens to them. The premise of the book, the activation, was something different and kept you guessing because you didn't always know who had been actually affected by it. I'd recommend this book, and would definitely read other works by these authors.

A chaotic introduction to some of the features of S3 By Jascha Casadio Amazon S3 is one of the storage solutions offered by Amazon, as well as one of the first services of the ecosystem to be made publicly available. Despite being almost 10 years old, S3 keeps getting enriched with new features and offers scalability, high availability, and low latency at commodity costs. This makes it the obvious storage choice of everyone working with the Amazon Web Services. Still, despite this and the fact that it's there since 2006, the books dedicated to it are not many. In fact, I don't remember a single title focusing on S3, although, being one of the most basic services among those offered, any book introducing the readers to the ecosystem somehow touches it. On the other hand, it is also true that this lack of titles entirely dedicated to S3 has been compensated by the extensive, and free!, official documentation, which is easy to follow, full of examples and constantly updated. This makes it very hard for any author interested in writing a book about S3, since adding value to what Amazon already does provide is not an easy task. Still, not impossible. Amazon S3 Cookbook, a recently released title, is probably the first book entirely centered on S3.I have reread the whole S3 developers' guide recently. It's good to keep up to date with the latest whistles and bells offered by the service. Then, when I heard that this title was released at the end of August of 2015, I was very excited to get a copy and get through those almost 300 pages. Having the official documentation so fresh in my mind would have allowed me to better evaluate the value of this text. There are indeed things that the developers' guide does not cover. There were questions that I wanted answered. And I wanted this book to provide those answers. Among them, how to organize the files of the many different projects a DevOps manages into S3, through delimiters and prefixes; how to switch from a standard VCS, such as Git, to S3, allowing instances to push, pull and merge without problems; how to allow external users to access to specific resources, limiting their permissions both in space and time. Apart from these questions, there were other generic expectations. Among them, for example, a good coverage of the CLI. There are many bindings specific to different programming languages: Ruby, Java, PHP, Python. What makes everyone happy is the command line. I do honestly expect each book that doesn't explicitly claim to cover a specific language to present the examples through the CLI. Is that asking too much?Before getting into the content of the book a first quick (negative) note: the book is called a cookbook, but it is not. Cookbooks are titles that present recipes that get the reader solving a problem through the winning step-by-step approach. Amazon S3 Cookbook does not provide this typical question-answer scenario.But let's dive into the book itself! The very first thing that caught my eye is something that, unfortunately, is not new to Packt Publishing titles: faulty proofreading. Some of the commands of the examples used to present the service have, indeed, typos. Nothing fancy that the expert eye won't catch. Still, this suggests a quick and cheap proofreading which lowers the overall value of the book.Typos apart, the book feels like more about CloudFormation rather than S3. True, CloudFormation can be on top of S3 and other services, such as EC2 and Auto Scaling. Still, this book should be about S3, not CloudFormation. Chapters 4 and 5, for example, should be probably part of a different title.Another thing that I did not like is the waste of pages dedicated to do stuff through the console, rather than the CLI. In chapter 6, for example, the author takes six pages showing how to set up an IAM user that has administrator's permissions through the console. Six pages plenty of colorful screenshots that take the reader hand by hand in such a delicate and hard process. Very little space is given to do the same with the command line, which is probably the way DevOps will interact with AWS. DevOps love the command line. And coffee.Another thing that leaves a bad taste in the mouth is that concepts are not clearly explained. Let's stay on chapter 6. Chapter 6, as stated, is centered about buckets' policies and IAM. It presents different interesting scenarios of limiting access to the resources, such as granting cross-account bucket permissions. The topics covered are real-world and interesting indeed, but far from being well explained. Let's see why: "First, we create a bucket and attach a bucket policy to the bucket in Account A, and then create an IAM user in Account A and one in Account B. Lastly attach a bucket policy to the bucket owed by Account A". Attaching a bucket policy was the first thing we did, wasn't it?I must admit that when I have finished reading this book I was disappointed. It's not that most of my questions were not answered, but rather that the concepts were not clearly covered. Chapter 7, for example, which is about temporary permissions and thus among those that I was very interested in, got me more puzzled than enlightened. While Damoren follows the demon hunter Matt Hollis as he is drawn in to joining the Valducans, a holy order of Demon Hunters, in order to protect the remaining holy weapons from a plot to destroy them all, Hounacier follows Malcom and gives us a glimpse into his past, and how he came to be bonded with Hounacier.In Hounacier, Malcom travels back to his home of New Orleans after the death of his mentor. In his quest to unearth the truth of what happened Malcom finds himself not only as the hunted enemy, but alone, unable to draw on the strength of his friends, team,or the people around him. We learn about Malcom and Hounacier, we get a glimpse into the world of Voodoo, and most importantly we learn about the events that made Malcom the man he is. As in the first book, we learn even more about the many different types of Demons, their powers, and their weaknesses while also learning that the Holy Weapons are just as unique, with complex histories of their own.Reading this book, with it's vivid descriptions of people and locations, is akin to visiting the home town of a good friend and having that friend point out all the best places to eat, the places he lived, and even meeting all the people he grew up with. There is a sense of familiarity that comes through those descriptions, and Seth is able to tie his world of Demons and Demon Hunters to the vivid history of the city of New Orleans.Malcom was my favorite character in the first book. I was ecstatic to find out that he was the main character in the second book. As such, my review may be a bit biased, but I think that just reinforces how well these characters are developed, and how being the hero isn't always about being on the "Good" side.

I loved this story By Frank Errington Review copyI had more fun reading this than anything else I've read in recent memory. What I expected going in was a rehash of book one in the Valducan series. What I got was a great stand-alone novel in the Valducan world.Author, Seth Skorkowsky has come up with a winning formula featuring the Valducan, a group of demon-hunting knights who find and keep track of all holy weapons and whose library of demon species and lore is massive.Whereas book one dealt with the weapon Dämoren, book two focuses on Hounacier. Given there are dozens of such weapons, Skorkowsky could work in this world for some time to come. Truth be told, I'd be quite happy if that was the case.Like it's predecessor, Hounancier, is fast-paced,filled with monsters and monster hunters, and gets to the action from the very beginning, barely allowing the reader a chance to catch a breath. Unlike the first book, there is a very big twist halfway through. Not gonna spoil it, ya gotta read it, but this turned out to be one of the things I liked most about Hounacier. In my opinion this unexpected twist leads to a much better story.Hounacier is a wild rollercoaster of a tale which will ultimately lift your spirits.Hounancier (Valducan Book 2) is available now for the Kindle, from Ragnarok publications, through Amazon.com.Although I'd recommend reading book 1 first, it's really not necessary. Hounacier works well on it's own and is one that comes with my highest recommendation.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book. By Bitsy VonTrapp Excellent follow up to Damoren, the first book in the Valducan series. Fast paced, action packed and fascinating. The first book was, necessarily, more broad, as it had to introduce and define the Valducan universe and populate it. The second book is much more personal, told from the point of view of one of the Knights and explores the nature of the holy weapons to their respective holders, as well as providing an immersing look at what possession by the demonic creatures is like. The voodoo aspects of this particular weapon, Hounacier, were fascinating and it was obvious that Mr. Skorkowsky has done thorough research into the religion and its practice in both Haiti and New Orleans. All in all, a solid, engrossing and, most importantly, fun read. Highly recommended.

Good, petty evil, real evil, magic, technology (at least the parts that go boom!), loyalty, love, respect, honor,danger....It is not any one point that makes this series an outstanding read, rather the flawless seamless integration of all the parts (including two first person narrators which is very difficult). Indeed, the concepts and mis-adventures are mostly what you expect from a fantasy novel. No, it is the characters, none of them perfect, but warts and all, they join together and the manner of their adventure and adversity, and the way so many character traits are melded seamlessly into the narrative makes this series an exceptionally enjoyable read.

Love the series By Kindle Customer I am always looking for a different type of book and this series is unusual.I started with book 1 “Pixie Noir” a unique book with a pixie bounty hunter as the main character searching for a potential “Fae” queen living in Alaska to request her to return to the land of her heritage and accept her inheritance. I immediately purchased “Trickster Noir” and “Dragon Noir” which follows their adventures together. Loved the series I will be watching for more books.

This book is chock full of them, well to be fair the whole series but it does NOT get stuck in the details which is great. Great story telling details that pull you in to the story farther. Not something like a Tom Clancy book that can get lost in them for a while at times. I never quite know exactly where the book is going until we get there, which is always fun. Though I did sorta see one thing after this other thing happened. And then I was right about that thing. So that was nice.Also, you do get a real book here. And with each of the books in the series. A lot goes on. Many of the kindle indie books feel like they are roughly 1/2 the book or so. Not with Sanderson. You definitely get your moneys worth!Did I mention I wasn't doing spoilers?For a 3rd novel out (though I'd imagine there are others I've not seen). I thought this was a damn good book and quite a nice series with interesting and emoting characters that keep me in the story. I found all three of the books to be a pretty steady pace. Enjoyable but not "I cant work/sleep/watch tv, must finish book" fast pace. Then again, since this is book 3... and not say 10 for someone like Lois Bujold who does that with her books to me... I have high hopes that these will grab me more and more as her books are published. As a side note, just am listening to "Cetaganda" and even though I've read that darn book 3 or 4 times and listened to it as well, I have trouble putting it down. Makes doing the dishes that much faster for me with a good audio book. Regardless of who's book, be it Ringo, Weber, Sanderson (cough, get them audio books out missy!) Bujold, Clancy whatever.If you've read any of the others in this series, then get this one, you wont regret it.If you haven't... then don't start here, start with Pixie Noir

36 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Decent writing but the author confuses excitement for sex By Red3333 To be clear, this isn't a bad book but the plot needed a lot of work. I was expecting a dark and exciting fairytale and what I got was something completely different. The writing style is for young adult (simple, easy to read) but the plot doesn't match this young adult market. The Huntman has sex with the Queen five minutes after meeting her and then has sex with Snow White five minutes after meeting her (And this is not erotica, either. It is not graphic at all). Snow White asks the Huntsman to "Touch me like you touched her. Touch me like she touched you". Wait, what? Like I said, the author has confused making things exciting with people have sex with each other, like happens in soap operas.And then the Queen. The Queen wants to use fear to control the population but when Snow White gets bruises from too tight corsets the Queen made her wear, the Queen feels guilt and wants to make amends. So she gets her wish of everyone fearing her but then acts like she changed her mind and doesn't want that. But then changes her mind again, and the only solution she has is to kill Snow White. After having a quickie with the Huntsman, of course.Overall, the book is very pretty to look at but I would not recommend it and will not be reading it again.

I was so excited to see how someone could twist this story around differently than it has been already, but I was beyond disappointed I assumed the ending of the book, and I turned out to be right. But there was no reason behind anything in the story, so many unexplained things throughout the book it became frustrating. Most of the characters are pathetic and poorly put together. There was effort but the book itself had so many unfinished plots and some many things to explain but all it was in the story were problems jumping from another to another without any closure. The personalities and the characters themselves were predictable, and the references of other characters from fairytales were pretty exciting but still had nothing to do with the main idea of the book. You never found out the back story of the prince or why he was wounded and why apparently he's a psychopath, and the queen was old enough to be snow white's sister, and you never found out if the king ever came back from war or anything. None of it really made any sense and it basically was a start of a whole bunch of ideas and plots that were never finished or explained and continued into other situations of the story, and I was left hanging and confused by every chapter.

A brilliantly dark and twisted adult version of Snow White By "Seregil of Rhiminee" Sarah Pinborough's Poison was a pleasant surprise for me, because it was a dark and excellent fairy tale for adults. This Titan Books edition made a huge impression on me, because it was my kind of a fairy tale (I've always loved dark retellings of classic fairy tales and this modernized fairy tale had all the elements needed to charm and impress me).Sarah Pinborough gives a fantastic new twist and punch to the classic and beloved fairy tale of Snow White. This short novel is a beautifully dark, sexy and brutal adult version of Snow White that will charm and shock the readers in equal measure by its contents. It's fascinatingly different from the classic version due to its sexual and brutal contents.This short novel is subtitled A Wicked Snow White Tale, which is quite accurate when considering its contents, because it's a delightfully wicked and macabre fairy tale. It's something different for readers who are intrigued by classic fairy tales and their modern interpretations. This version has much more in common with the original version of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale than the well-known and sanitized Disney version, because it has plenty of sharpness and harshness.I've noticed a notable increase in fairy tale retellings during the recent years. I think it's great that many authors have begun to write their own versions of classic fairy tales, because they've added something new to them. Sarah Pinborough's approach to classic fairy tales is wonderfully brutal and twisted. Her version of Snow White sparkles with fascinating roughness and sexuality - some of it quite raw and potent.Here's information about the story:The queen, Lilith, loathes her husband who is the king. She also doesn't like his daughter, Snow White, and her freedom. She thinks that Snow White is too careless and everything's too easy for her. Lilith often hides in her own private room and collects magical items. The magic mirror tells Lilith of Snow White's beauty and kindness and it fuels her hatred towards Snow White. She wants to get rid of Snow White. When the king goes to war and the queen is left alone with Snow White, things change a lot, because the queen begins to gain more control over many things. When Snow White manages to humiliate the Lilith, Lilith reaches the end of her patience...This is the beginning of a masterfully told tale of jealousy and wickedness.I was suprised by how well the author wrote about the main characters. The characterizaton was excellent and worked perfectly, because Lilith and Snow White were interesting characters.Lilith, the evil queen, has quite a lot of depth to her. She hasn't had an easy life, because she has had to battle for her position and has learned to use power. She resents Snow White's freedom and the way she's been given everything too easily. She can't stand Snow White and her beauty. She wants to get rid of Snow White as soon as possible so that she can have all the power to herself.Snow White has normally been depicted as a simple, innocent and kind princess, but now she's not as simple and innocent as one might expect, because Sarah Pinborough writes fluently how Snow White rebels againts the queen and her commands. Snow White ignores the queen's commands and does as she pleases.I enjoyed reading about how Snow White wasn't as innocent as she was believed to be. There's a well written and surprising scene near the end of the story where the author breaks the illusion of Snow White being a decent and proper young woman. The author managed to surprise me with this brilliant scene, because I didn't expect anything like it to happen in the story.By writing about what the queen and Snow White feel about each other and how the queen hates Snow White, the author brings plenty of depth and style to the story. The hatred and desperation of the queen is easy to notice when you read the story and find out how much she wants to control everything and will do almost anything to get rid of Snow White.The scene in which Snow White humiliates Lilith reveals just how big the problems are between Lilith and Snow White. Lilith feels that Snow White is an ignorant child and hasn't grown up at all. This incident marks the beginning of Lilith's decline into a dangerous woman who is willing to do anything to get rid of those who threaten her.All the elements from the original fairy tale can be found in this version. Sarah Pinborough uses them well and adds her own kind of magic to the story by twisting them into an adult format. She spices up these elements with brutality and sex.Things related to sex and sexuality are handled in an excellent way in this short novel. The scenes involving sex bring a cool edge to the story. It's possible that certain readers may cringe at the idea of a fairy tale having sex in it, but I personally enjoy reading this kind of adult versions of classic fairy tales. I think it's great that there are authors who dare to break a few rules when they modernize fairy tales. Times have changed a lot since these old fairy tales were originally published, so it's good that authors add modern elements to them.I liked the author's prose, because it had a fairy-tale-like quality to it. Although the author has written a modern version of an old fairy tale, she hadn't forgotten that the prose must be fluent. Her prose flows effortlessly from the first page to the last page.I have to mention that the appearance of Aladdin was a nice surprise. I'm not going to reveal what kind of a person he is, but I can mention that he's not what you might expect him to be, because the author has her own unique and twisted vision of him.One of the most interesting aspects of Poison is that Sarah Pinborough examines what happens when our image of another person is shattered by a surprising revelation. In my opinion she writes surprisingly well about the consequences of such a revelation, because the consequences are wonderfully disturbing. I won't reveal what happens in the story, but I'll mention that the happenings are truly memorable.The ending of Poison is brilliantly disturbing. I'm sure that the ending will please many readers who have read dark fantasy and horror stories, but it will also please readers who want to read something out of the ordinary. If you enjoy reading dark fairy tales, you'll love the ending. In my opinion the ending is appropriately dark and twisted.The cover artwork in this Titan Books edition looks gorgeous and will please readers who want the best from their novels. In my opinion this short novel can be called a work of art, because the cover of the hardcover edition is stunningly beautiful.By the way, if you find yourself enjoying this short novel, please read the companion short novels: Charm and Beauty.If you've ever read fairy tales and have found them fascinating, do yourself a big favour and read this retelling of Snow White. You won't regret reading it, because it's something different and beautifully dark for adult readers. It's one of the best and most fascinating retellings of Snow White available for readers.Highly recommended!

The zombie apocalypse in this tale isn't the product of some government conspiracy, a super bug created by the over-prescription of antibiotics and evolution, or the result of some catastrophic accident. Instead, the virus is created by an insane cult leader who wants to rid the world of its evil nature. "Flesh without soul" is the ultimate sin, and to Michael, there is only one cure - total destruction. The tale is also unique because from the beginning the reader is given a peek into the mindset of the enemy and offered insight into the devastation he has created. There are also portions of the story told from other perspectives, but to start out in a position that isn't based on surviving is completely unique. The characters were definitely wholly unique and were enjoyable to read, though the subject matter was often dark ... There are moments of intense action, intense emotion, and there aren't words for the ending. (Which is, without a doubt, an ending as the description promises.)If you aren't interested in reading a complete series and instead would like a book with a finite ending, this is the book for you. If you've ever wanted to know how a zombie apocalypse may end, but didn't want to read thirty volumes to do it - check out Flesh Without Soul!

Medical treatment helped a bit, but being drugged into happiness is no solution. I found help not in medicine, but in writing. Specifically writing about zombies.Putting my pain onto paper helped me. Giving my pain a physical form (the zombie) was a breakthrough. The zombie  gave me the greatest outlet for my pain. Here I could work out the nightmares bouncing around in my head. Zombies could exact revenge on my enemies, express the horror of the world I lived in, I could even delve into the thick smell of a decaying human in a way that made me look WAY less crazy. When you smell a dead human you know instinctively what that is. A very primitive part of your brain starts screaming  "That's a dead human, you need to run!"  Writing about the smell of dead people is not great reading material, until you insert it into the zombie apocalypse, then it becomes the reason zombies can not sneak up on their victims. It becomes a wall that physically hurts you as the hordes of dead approach.The stench sucks the oxygen from your lungs, slowing you with every step, allowing the dead to slowly overtake you, just as death overtakes us all , eventually.So when you read any of my stuff realize I am writing for one reason.To save me from my own nightmares.

I am not usually interested in this gendre. The characters were amazing and I was surprised and pleased to find the women in this book in such position of power. Well written, easy reading. Definitely enjoyable. I probably should have said thoughtful as the mood, but it was also suspenseful. After reading the book I spent many hours thinking about how the this apocalypse developed and thought about how this could possibly happen in our future.
