The Immune: Omnibus Edition, by David Kazzie

Review "Chilling and compelling, David Kazzie has created a masterful story of love, loss, and survival. The characters come alive on the page and, with his elegant writing, Kazzie keeps them hanging on, but barely, and you will be hanging on with them until the very end. This is a powerful story, wonderfully told." -Mark Pryor, author of the bestselling Hugo Marston mystery series.   "The character development is amazing, and you find yourself rooting [for] and hating characters in equal measure along the way, as they scramble their way through life and fight to save, or find their humanity. This book is a riveting read, and although lengthy, it has enough in it to keep you reading right till the end. Very sad at times, thrilling and chilling in others, I would heartily recommend this book." -Kindle Book Review

Not your average run-of-the-mill post apocalypse story By Gerry in Richmond The author of The Jackpot has come back with a really enjoyable second novel. It was initially published in four installments, and the suspense in awaiting each successive installment was the only unpleasant aspect of reading it that way. Now, with the omnibus version, readers will not have to wait.Despite the fact that there jillions of post-apocalyptic novels out there, I was far more able to relate to Kazzie's characters, probably because they weren't super-heroes, transformers, robots, aliens, or any other altered life forms (or the living dead, or computers, etc.) Instead, these are normal, everyday people simply trying to survive a catastrophe, without, for the most part, even understanding what that catastrophe was. For those reasons, I am interested to see how things progress as they begin to rebuild, and I believe that Kazzie has indicated his intention to follow up with these characters to see how they fare. This is a commendable second effort, and I look forward to reading more of Kazzie's work as his writing career inevitably progresses.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. for good or evil By M.T. Phillips Imagine last year's Ebola crisis but multiplied by millions and spread almost instantly around the globe. Not possible in nature, right? Well, imagine that scenario if the superbug in question were genetically engineered. That's one of the first things that will grip you: Unlike the zombies and aliens that saturate the apocalyptic genre, the disaster driving this story could, someday, potentially happen. In Kazzie's story, a small percentage of the population has a natural immunity and survives. That's where the protagonist, a Richmond doctor, comes in: He must travel across the country to find his daughter and see whether she shares the immunity. Along the way, he picks up friends and allies but his quest draws him inexorably closer to the evil that spawned the end of the world. The story shines a bright light on the power of individuals to make a huge difference, for good or evil, even in the wake of a near-extinction event, and to show courage and resilience, or to collapse, or to explode, in the face of disaster.

By Amazon Customer Although the subject matter, a deadly virus, is not an original one, Dave Kazzie's approach, character development, and multiple settings puts a very different twist on this topic. I was so engaged that I read the first part of this series through in one day! Great imagery: "He was scared beyond any plane he'd ever imagined and then crammed two tons of ball- shrinking terror into a five-gallon bag." "More cracks were forming in his box now. He wasn't sure how much more he could take before it ruptured, like the bulkheads on Titanic after its kiss from the iceberg". Story was interspersed with news updates from modern Twitter feeds and hashtags, giving it current day relatability.Character development and intrigue continues through later parts of "The Immune". Will good win over evil? Will Adam find Rachel? Will this small group of survivors find a way to survive and thrive? These questions, and more, were answered in the conclusion of this fascinating series! David's descriptive style makes the reader feel like he is right in the middle of the action, contemplating how one would act in a similar world where there are no longer laws and rules. I'm anxious to read more, but, sorry when the book ends. Nice wrap up of the characters and their stories. Looking forward to Kazzie's next effort!

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic book. Wonderful character connections and development.- reviewed by Haunted Book Case By Regan Bennett So, you all know that I’ve been really overrun with a lot of zombie, apocalyptic, dystopian type of book lately. This is one of the books I received prior to putting the brakes on zombie novels. I read a few none zombie based books prior to chewing into this one. I am glad I did. I was able to get right into this book and finish it within two nights. It’s the same basic pretense of most zombie apocalyptic novels; groups of survivors continuing to survive. The groups come across both the undead trying to eat them and the living trying to rape, plunder and pilferage. The protagonist in this novel is Veronica, who made a snap decision to kill her father when he was bitten. This decision forever changed her view on the new world ahead of her. She’s a fast runner, athletic teenager who aged and matured many years on that quick decision she had to make. The decision she makes, after the loss of her family, is to head to the Bay. Along her travels she meets Ben, who ends up being a life saver. By the end of the book, the troop of humans have separated and finally reconnected at the Bay. When they were separated, Veronica meets Samson, the name sake for the book. His story is a bit twisted; think American Horror Story – Zombie Apocalypse. All in all, this was a fantastically written zombie trope. The author constructed the story line rather well. However, more importantly was the character development. I believe that’s the main reason I clung on for dear life until the end of the book.My thoughts on the book: I am not sure why it was titled Breadwinner, when that aspect of the book was so small compared to Veronica and her storyline. I mean, I got where the title came in and how it played out. But it seemed so much more insignificant in regards to Ben & Veronica. This has nothing to do with the author or the book, just a personal experience. I also had no idea it was a series of books. I was mildly irritated it ended the way it did. Once I found out, today even, that there was a book II, I actually did a little cheer. If it had ended this way, I would have been completely bummed out.Fantastic book. Wonderful character connections and development. I will actually read book two!!

I loved how it involved different people's point of views and how these people's live collide during this apocalypse. It was terrifying to me because these were not your typical zombies. The virus hits hard and fast. They are not slow either they will chase you down for a piece of your calf...it's only when they have been turned for awhile do they slow down.My favorite character is Veronica. She is So smart and strong. I would pick her to be on my team!! Ben is a great character as well.Over all this was an amazing first in this trilogy and I cannot wait to read the other two!! For full review check out my blog...nerdigirlbooks.wordpress.comI'm going to go pack some more essentials into my doomsday pack!

The Breadwinner is amazing. The one thing that kinda threw me were all the characters. It was hard to keep it, but once you got to remembering who was who, you really get sucked in. I can't tell you how many times someone would try talking to me and I wouldn't hear a word they said, or I'd be so into reading I'd lose track of time. It was so action packed and full of drama, I thought I'd end up having a heart attack. This was a quick read. I absolutely loved how there was so drop off or anything. from page one to the very last page it keeps you on your toes wanting to know more and more.If I could rate it more than 5 stars, I would.―Reviews of a fearstreetzombie

Alarm Clock Dawn, by Eric Vance Walton

From the Author "Alarm Clock Dawn will always be special to me. The novel took almost ten years to finish from concept to completion. The book represents a huge personal triumph and I'll always remember the day I finished the manuscript as one of the best days of my life. Aside from the major plot-twist at the end of the book, there are so many hidden details in the plot that only a handful of readers (who I know of) have discovered them all. Although it's been far from a runaway commercial success, I've gained immeasurable joy and satisfaction from this book and am thrilled to say it has garnered a fairly large hard-core international following. Alarm Clock Dawn is just the beginning of a trilogy that together will tell a much larger and more important story. The second book, Truth Is Stranger, will appear in print in 2016 and the third installment, Dream No More will be published the following year."

From the Inside Flap Prologue Desire, draw us deeperTo the keeper of our hearts. We seek but a glimpseOf timeless twilight in this long day's night The Peace we seek begins withinAnd ripples forth in silent waves,Bathing each soul with light. THE POWERS THAT BE wish usTo continue our slothful slumberBut our numbers are too great For our hunger to be quelled. Take this, your first gasp of pure TruthUtter your first cry, then a long cleansing sighAs we say goodbye, to the darkness of this world.

From the Back Cover XenTek, the most powerful corporation the world has ever known, is one of the many companies entangled in all aspects of world government. Johann Pfizer, their CEO, is determined to grow the company stock each quarter at any cost. He and a handful of powerful elite have created a society where everything that brings a person joy and makes them human - art, music, creativity - has been stripped away by the monopolization of time. Life is only work and people are nothing but pistons that drive a global economic engine. As a result, the natural work is being destroyed at an alarming pace, and the planet has begun to protest the insatiable consumption as destructive super storms wreak havoc without warning. Adam Harkin is a brilliant employee in XenTek's research and development department who is beginning to feel the despair of a system designed to destroy anything that gets in the way of his work. He longs to break the cycle, and only one thing gives him hope: The Quiet Rebellion is building momentum. Against all odds, thousands of people are waking up from this nightmare, burning their Consumer Identification Cards and dropping out of this toxic society. In camps outside of the cities they do their best to piece together what remains of their humanity. The clock is ticking, and one question haunts their fragile optimism: Is it already too late?

It was easy to read and full of twists, turns, reflection and enough suspense to keep me reading (I just had to find out what was going to happen next!) It contained a good mix of drama, science fiction, poetry, spirituality and a hint of romance. It was a book which really made me think outside of the box and is one I still continue to think about! Rumor has it this is a part of a trilogy and I am eagerly awaiting the release of the next book. I believe this book will interest a lot of people because it crosses several genres. Congratulations Eric to a job well done!

How this book relates to your life By Jean White Alarm Clock Dawn is cleverly written and the title should "dawn" on you as you progress in your reading. Once you do get it, you may be surprised at the meaning of it and realize how the story relates to your life.Eric Vance Walton is a brilliant author and poet and proves it though out by providing his readers with layers of spirituality, suspense, poems, and symbolism. All you have to do is be willing and able to be receptive to Eric's message. I believe that it is a powerful one and very well worth your time. I guarantee once you pick the book up, it will be hard to put it down. The book should help you, as it did me, to remember some things that you may have forgotten, things that are extremely important to a person's soul and mental well-being. It may also help you to remember what you are passionate about. Blessings to all! Enjoy!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent 1st Novel!! By Shawn Mullen This is an excellent first novel from an author more known for his poetry. Set in a dystopian society, that frankly looks like somewhere we could easily be headed, the author crafts a cautionary tale about the excesses of a society that strives for more and more "things". Driven by huge multinational corporations with excellent advertising (Marlboro, Budweiser, Lunestra anyone?), the story evolves to provide a yin to the yang that sets it up. I am NOTORIOUS for getting halfway through a book and jumping to the last chapter, just because I hate waiting. This book was the first one that I didn't do that to in a Looooong time, and I was handsomely rewarded. There was a nice twist and denouement that I just didn't see coming. Well worth the read!

An arcane mix of Americana and tales of the street, the themes of the short stories center on childhood, family, life in school, dating, bar room/coffee houses and police. The short stories are well written and feature dialogue, a simple written presentation creating the extraordinary in the ordinary. This Writer’s favourite is Kathy’s Struggle just for a brilliant representation of serendipity. A good karma story with dark edges. Also, a story that stood out, just for an odd humor ending was Two Sacks of Groceries. The crown reamer of stories is Sarge. A retired gay woman from the Marines sits in a gay bar and disses on life with the bar owner. She wants to play Santa Claus at Christmas and goes around to interviews looking to be hired. The dry juxtaposition of events was sad, a little crazy and funny. This collection of short stories lives in the shadowland America. The short stories unfold with subplots like Escher* prints, with an unexpected turn but usually with a soft landing and a dry humor. Presenting truthtelling and the odd webs of uncivilized civilization, “only in America” the work is the craft. In the tradition of American short story writing, not yet with the soft edges of Truman Capote, because it is newly written and written in the post-modern time period (Mr. Capote wrote about mid-20th Century and this is written 60 years later) yet possibly as loved with time. “The shadow knows”, gifts from cityscape America, Blind Date by Rob Hobkirk.*M.C. His first two books (Haiku Avenue and Somewhere Poetry Grows Wild under the Eucalyptus) were some of the most entertaining and creative works of poetry I have read in some time. Blind Date is a collection of ten short stories which present every day characters and the situations they encounter in ways that I, and probably most readers, will recognize as something they have experienced in their own lives. Robert has a knack for taking the ordinary and mundane and making it interesting. He also does a masterful job of character development. All of the stories in Blind Date are well done but the first story, Blind Date, sets the standard for the rest of the book. Sarge and Two Sacks of Groceries are also well done. If you have not had the opportunity to read any of his books I recommend you do so at your earliest convenience.

Wolf I really enjoyed reading Blind Date and am quickly becoming a fan of this author's work, as this is my second. The book seems to be a mixture of detailed and interesting first person accounts of past and present experiences, along with stories apparently from the author's imagination. There are quirky twists and turns that keep you on your toes, along with some strategically placed humor to tickle your funny bone. I felt like I was sitting with the author at a Starbucks, (ironically a subject of one of the stories), intently listening as he shared stories of his past experiences, and perhaps his mind's experiences, either way it would make no difference as they are still enjoyable.

The Gift of Sunderland: An Australian Fantasy Adventure, by J. E. Rogers

Review The Gift of Sunderland: An Australian Fantasy Adventure is an epic fantasy for children and preteens written by J.E. Rogers. This book is a sequel to The Sword of Demelza, but it can be read as a stand-alone novel. Waylond Ayers is a Numbat who lives in the forests of Sunderland with his father, Roland, and his brother, Morlund. Waylond has been chosen by Verdigris, the former Guardian of the Forest, to be the next Guardian, but he's not sure whether he is capable enough to assume the role his father had held before him; he's content with being a blacksmith. His brother Morlund is furious at being passed over for the honor and is determined to claim the role of Guardian for himself. To do that, he must find the green crystal that fits within the hilt of the Guardian's sword. J.E. Rogers' epic fantasy for preteens and children, The Gift of Sunderland: An Australian Fantasy Adventure is exciting and fast-paced. Waylond is a marvelous character, and I could easily see why the Forest chose him to be the next Guardian. The illustrations that are placed throughout the text are intricate and beautifully rendered pencil drawings that give the characters personality and bring them to life. Rogers also includes a glossary filled with pictures and drawings of Australian locations for this story, as well as information on the bilbies, wombats, dibblers, and the other species that appear in this book. I was fascinated by the diversity of the wildlife of this country, and saddened by the statistics of the many endangered animals. The Gift of Sunderland: An Australian Fantasy Adventure is epic fantasy at its finest, and it's most highly recommended. Jack Magnus for READERS' FAVORITE

About the Author J.E. Rogers writes for middle graders, but her work is loved by readers of all ages who enjoy fantasy that features anthropomorphized animals. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The two brothers are reminiscent of Kane and Able and there is a classic battle between good and evil By Jane Finch The Gift of Sunderland by J. E. Rogers and illustrated by Guy Atherfold is an epic adventure in the fantasy world of Sunderland. Two brothers after the same artefact, but only one has the destiny to become Guardian of the Forest. Brothers Waylond and Kaylond are torn apart by family tragedy, and their lives take different journeys. Waylond sets off on his quest to fulfil his destiny and gathers various animals that need his help along the way. When the brothers finally meet again they will either be divided and be enemies forever, or unite to protect their world.Following on from The Sword of Demelza, this book again uses native Australian animals as the protagonists. The two brothers are reminiscent of Kane and Able and there is a classic battle between good and evil. In spite of his personal mission and journey, Waylond always has the compassion for the other animals that need his help which earns their loyalty, so that their determination and courage overcome the mean-spirited animals that follow their dark leader.Well written and enhanced by lovely illustrations, this book is a delight to read. I found myself thinking about the characters even after I had finished reading. As a lover of anthropomorphism I really enjoyed the way the author brought out the characters of the animals. A book that is crying out for animation. Highly recommended.

Rogers was a wonderful and suspenseful book. The book is a middle grade fantasy that is very touching. The story is mainly about the fight over two brothers over one very important role. The fight leads to a lot of tragedy and has a big impact over Sunderland and Acadia. My favorite character was Fergal, as she was loving, brave, courageous, and learned so much. A few of the characters took risked their lives for each other. I love how there were many Australian things to learn about in this book.I loved the first book as well and couldn't wait to read this one!Erika-Elizabeth Caswell, age 10

I also highly recommend Ms. Rogers first book, "The Sword of Demelza". The books are set in an alternate Australia and the characters are animals, lizards, etc. that are indigenous to that continent. The characters come to life in a rousing adventure tale. There are lessons to be learned on the importance of taking care of our planet but you never feel as if you are being taught a lesson. You get to meet the characters in the beautiful artwork that graces the book. I am looking forward the another installment.

For a woman with a deeply romantic heart, there is nothing like going to a wedding. It’s a symphony of love and tender emotion—the beautiful dress, the flowers, the bride’s maids, the heartfelt vows, and the wonderful food and drink. And, at certain select weddings, a lucky sister of the bride can feel the thrill of being kidnapped by mysterious aliens, transported to a hidden space station known only as the Facility, and subjected to grisly torture and hideous biological experimentation. Rayne Dracon, daughter of the former Lariah Daniels and the Dracon Princes of Jasan, is the sister in question. Attending her sister Tani’s wedding on a distant world, one moment she’s standing atop a hill and, after disappearing for only a few moments, reappears in the same place looking nothing like she had before she disappeared. She remembers almost nothing of how she came to be where she was and in the appalling condition in which she was found. Standing nearby when she reappears are the three stunningly hot and powerful Bearen-Hiru brothers, her Rami, or destined soul-mates, whom she barely knew before disappearing, and remembers even less about when she returns. Rushing to her aid, the Bearen-Hirus join with her to discover who took her, where she was, what they did to her, and—most of all—why. With Rayne’s memory returning to her slowly, and a barely understood deadline running out, Rayne and her Rami are in a race against time and space to solve the mysteries of Rayne’s disappearance, to find her captors, and to eliminate them as a threat to the galaxy. Along the way Rayne feels a growing attraction to these magnetic, oh so Alpha males—an attraction that begins to overcome the layers of protection she has woven around herself as a result of her imprisonment, an attack on her as a child, and feelings of being unwanted by the Bearen-Hirus themselves. Rayne must find the resources within herself to overcome all these fears and traumas before she can decide whether to confront her captors, or allow them to spread their evil throughout the galaxy, and to find true and eternal love with the Bearen-Hirus, or to live alone with her dreams unfulfilled. Rayne’s Return is the latest of Laura Jo Phillips’s Hearts of ICARUS series, a rich, heartfelt, and well-developed sequel to her hit “Soul-Linked Saga” series. It is a full length 110,000 word novel, and has all the love, heartache, excitement, danger, adventure, soul-bursting fulfillment, and sweaty-tangled-bodies-beneath-the-sheets eroticism that are the defining characteristics of her writing. Her fans will love it and new readers will find it an exciting entre to the series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not Impressed and bored. By Cami's Kindle As this author is one of my favorites, I was very disappointed in this book. Technically, the book is well written and her world-building skills are impressive. However, this was boring and trite. The addition of the time-travel sends the connection to the original series into left field. It was tortuous reading. Slogged through it the first time and then set it aside not even being sure what I read. Picked it up AGAIN quite a while later to re-read to determine if my first read was an accurate rendition of my opinion. Unfortunately, it was. Could not even finish it the second time.I am not deleting it from my Kindle because it is an addition to a series but doubt that I will try a third re-read (and this is from an avid and voracious re-reader). This has also made me hesitant about the next book in the series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Awesome series! By pcm The Thousand Worlds of Ms. Phillips are such wonderful places to read about. Her phenomenal worldbuilding is outstanding in this genre, and her complex and interesting characters continue to populate those worlds for our reading enjoyment. Her addition of time travel makes this installment in the continuing Jasani tales open up entirely new inroads for even more adventures for those characters, both the familiar ones and the new ones we meet in this book. Having read all of her previous books, I can honestly say she always brings something new and fresh to her storylines, and I've never been left disappointed. I'd give Rayne's Return more than 5 stars if I could, it is that good. I highly recommend ALL of Ms. Phillips' books, and I am really looking forward to Salene's story.

Battle, looms. And mankind is not ready.

The final volume of the Wheel of Time, A Memory of Light, was partially written by Robert Jordan before his untimely passing in 2007. Brandon Sanderson, New York Times bestselling author of the Mistborn books, was chosen by Jordan's editor---his wife, Harriet McDougal---to complete the final book. The scope and size of the volume was such that it could not be contained in a single book, and so Tor proudly presents The Gathering Storm as the first of three novels that will make up A Memory of Light. This short sequence will complete the struggle against the Shadow, bringing to a close a journey begun almost twenty years ago and marking the conclusion of the Wheel of Time, the preeminent fantasy epic of our era.

In this epic novel, Robert Jordan's international bestselling series begins its dramatic conclusion. Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, struggles to unite a fractured network of kingdoms and alliances in preparation for the Last Battle. As he attempts to halt the Seanchan encroachment northward---wishing he could form at least a temporary truce with the invaders---his allies watch in terror the shadow that seems to be growing within the heart of the Dragon Reborn himself.

Egwene al'Vere, the Amyrlin Seat of the rebel Aes Sedai, is a captive of the White Tower and subject to the whims of their tyrannical leader. As days tick toward the Seanchan attack she knows is imminent, Egwene works to hold together the disparate factions of Aes Sedai while providing leadership in the face of increasing uncertainty and despair. Her fight will prove the mettle of the Aes Sedai, and her conflict will decide the future of the White Tower---and possibly the world itself.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

The Gathering Storm: Book Twelve of the Wheel of Time, by Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson

Review

“The battle scenes have the breathless urgency of firsthand experience, and the . . . evil laced into the forces of good, the dangers latent in any promised salvation, the sense of the unavoidable onslaught of unpredictable events bear the marks of American national experience during the last three decades.” ―The New York Times on The Wheel of Time

“The Wheel of Time . . . is a fantasy tale seldom equaled and still less often surpassed in English.” ―Chicago Sun-Times

“Jordan has a powerful vision of good and evil--but what strikes me as most pleasurable . . . is all the fascinating people moving through a rich and interesting world.” ―Orson Scott Card on The Wheel of Time

Whitehead The Gathering Storm is the twelfth volume in The Wheel of Time series and the first released since Robert Jordan's unfortunate death in 2007. Jordan spent his final months amassing and dictating a significant amount of notes, outlines and chapter summaries for another writer to use to finish the series. Previously, Jordan had indicated he'd wipe his hard drive to stop someone else completing his work, but with him being so close to the end of the story he changed his mind, trusting his wife and editor, Harriet, and his publisher Tom Doherty to find a writer capable of finishing the series well. In theory, it should have led to disaster: typically one writer finishing a series begun by another is an atrocious idea that only leads to very bad books (note the vomit-inducing new Dune novels and the ill-advised Amber continuations). The only example I can think of this working was when Stella Gemmell completed her late husband David's final novel in fine form, but the amount of work required to bring Wheel of Time to a conclusion required an altogether different level of commitment and effort from Brandon Sanderson.Almost unbelievably, Sanderson has pulled it off. In his introduction he hopes the differences between his style and Jordan, whilst unavoidably noticeable, will be comparable to a different (but still good) director taking over your favourite movie series but all the actors remaining the same. This isn't a bad analogy at all, and whilst there are a few moments in The Gathering Storm where you think, "I don't think Robert Jordan would have done things quite like that," there's never a moment where you think, "He definitely wouldn't have done that at all!" which is vital.Another concern was that originally these last three books were supposed to be one volume, A Memory of Light, and Sanderson actually wrote the bulk of the text under the impression it was going to be probably split in two. The decision to split the book in three instead resulted in much recrimination, although at 800 pages in hardcover (and assuming the second and third come in at a similar size) and well over 300,000 words, tying it with Knife of Dreams as the longest book in the series since Lord of Chaos, it's clear this could never have been done in just two books either. One problem with this split was that since Sanderson hadn't been writing with three books in mind, The Gathering Storm would feel incomplete or unsatisfying on its own. This is not the case at all. In fact, The Gathering Storm has the most cohesive through-line in story, character and theme of any book in the series since The Shadow Rising, and possibly out of all of them. The structure of the book focuses on two primary storylines: Rand's deteriorating mental state as he struggles to bring Arad Doman into the confederation of kingdoms sworn to him, and Egwene's efforts to unite the White Tower and end the civil war within the Aes Sedai that has raged for the past seven and a half volumes. Other characters and stories appear briefly, such as Perrin and Tuon, and Mat has a slightly bigger role, but other major characters and storylines do not appear at all. The recently-quelled civil war in Andor and the Mazrim Taim/Asha'man plotlines are notable by their absences. Instead, this part of the story focuses on two of the central protagonists, Rand and Egwene, and the experiences they go through to achieve their goals. The novel could almost be called The Long Night of Rand al'Thor as the series' central figure is dragged through the wringer, going to very dark places indeed as he struggles to understand his own role in events and how he is to achieve the things he must do to save the world. On the other hand, Egwene is shown to have already passed through her moments of doubt and misjudgement in previous volumes, and in this book her story focuses on her battle of wills with Elaida to restore unity to the Aes Sedai. This contrast of darkness and light and putting two central characters squarely back in the limelight (previous volumes have sometimes devoted way too much time to tertiary characters of limited importance) is a highly successful move, allowing some interesting thematic elements to be touched upon. Whilst the reader may have guessed that Rand is severely traumatised from everything that has happened to him in the previous books, it isn't until this volume that we realise just how badly things have affected him and we see just how hard and how determined he has become. An interesting analogy that is not touched upon is what happened to Aridhol to defeat the Shadow in the Trolloc Wars, where it became harder and more ruthless than the enemy and eventually consumed itself in insanity and rage. This is a powerful and intense story, something that has been building for the entire latter half of the series, and it's a demanding tale that you probably wouldn't want to dump on a new author in ideal circumstances. But Sanderson picks up the ball and runs with it. Rand's characterisation is completely spot-on and consistent with earlier appearances, and Sanderson does a monumental job with this storyline. He also does superbly with Egwene's story, which culminates in one of the most spectacular action set-pieces in the series to date (and I suspect something that could dislodge Dumai's Wells or the Battle of Cairhien as many reader's favourite action sequence in the whole series). A whole myriad of lesser characters is also well-handled, such as Siuan, Tuon and the various Aes Sedai, but Gawyn becomes a bit of a fifth wheel with not much to do, which is odd given he has a much bigger presence here than he has in some considerable time.Other reviewers have suggested that Sanderson struggles with Mat, and unfortunately this is true. Not fatally so, but for everything Mat does that is 'right' to his character, he'll typically do something incongruous and uncharacteristic a few pages later. Sanderson also never really gets into the swing of his speech pattern or sense of humour either. He's readable, but it's the only part of the book where the change in authors feels jarring. Luckily, it's not a large part of the book and hopefully Sanderson will be able to work more on this area for the next book, Towers of Midnight, where Mat is expected to play a much bigger role in events. The Gathering Storm (****½) is a very fine book, one of the strongest instalments of the whole series and easily the best book published in The Wheel of Time for fifteen years. Whilst some of that achievement must go to Brandon Sanderson for his sterling and jaw-dropping work on the book, it is clear that Robert Jordan had planned these events with a watchmaker's precision, setting them up through lines of dialogue and minor twists of characterisation stretching right back to the second volume of the series, and the overwhelming feeling upon reaching the end of the novel is that he was an extraordinarily clever writer and plotter, for all of the flaws that have cropped up along the way. The book is available now in the UK and, with the worst cover in the history of modern publishing, in the USA. Towers of Midnight will follow in one year's time, with A Memory of Light to follow a year after that.

Excellent Handover and Excellent Book By TS This book is a genuinely great contribution; if you like any other book in the Wheel of Time series, you'll like this one. It's the 12th book in the ongoing saga; Jordan unfortunately and sadly died in 2007, before completing the last chunk of the series, and Brandon Sanderson (author of several excellent but less-well-known fantasy novels) was hired to finish it up based on Jordan's notes, outlines, and completed sections. Those kinds of handovers seldom go well, and to add to that uncertainty, the quality of the series has been somewhat of a sine wave, with definite peaks and definite valleys. So, despite a marked increase in quality in the book immediately prior to this one (Knife of Dreams, which came out in 2005), Jordan's death and the series' checkered history gave real reason to fear that the handover of this series would not go well.So far as this volume goes, at least, the handover has succeeded. There's a real spark and fire here; if you're a fan of the earlier books, and you haven't gotten completely jaded to the entire Wheel of Time series by now, you *will* love this one as well. Promise.Because of the nature of the coauthorship (Jordan wrote some sections of this book before he died, and the rest was completed from outlines and notes), it's hard to know precisely how much we're seeing here of Brandon Sanderson's work and how much of Jordan's, and there were one or two moments where I as a reader wondered whose voice I was reading, and one or two points where I felt Sanderson had stumbled slightly in his presentation of a character or handling of internal monologue. (After several re-reads, the issue seems to be that a few of Sanderon's turns of phrase seem more stylistically "modern" than what Jordan had used to date). But I could count those problem points on the fingers of one hand, and this is an 800-page book. The riveting action and powerfully compelling characters that made the series great are all still here, and overall Sanderson's work is excellent, especially considering how badly some similar series handovers have failed in the past.Perhaps most impressive (and necessarily similarly controversial), Sanderson manages to show these characters continuing to develop and change as individuals -- something absolutely necessary if continuing the series was going to be at all worthwhile, but also inevitably controversial, as it's impossible to do anything more than guess at how closely Sanderson's character changes parallel or follow what Jordan's would have been. Still, apart from one or two hiccups, I think most readers will feel they're reading about the same characters as before (and different readers may well pick different hiccups; some readers may prefer Sanderson's hiccups to Jordan's -- even where the differences are noticeable, Sanderson hasn't made *bad* choices, just *different* ones). Sanderson states in a brief introduction that he'd like for readers to think of these novels as film scenes shot by a secondary director, but part of the same film and with the same cast of characters, and I think most readers will find he achieves that.I'll avoid detailed plot summaries for fear of spoilers, apart from noting that the book focuses primarily on Rand and Egwene's storylines (though we do get appearances from most of the other major characters). I will say that it's probably the most grim of any book in the series to date, both in terms of characterization and of plot; the pacing throughout is torrential. Many major plot lines and open questions are finally resolved, and Jordan's prior tendency to spring fifteen new puzzles for every one answered is turned on its head here, with about fifteen new answers for every new puzzle: this is a book of answers and solutions (some of them very dramatic and even poignant). If you've ever wondered "Why doesn't [character] just do [x]", there's a good chance this is the book where they finally go there and do that, or where you find out why they haven't.Anyway, if you like any prior books in the Wheel of Time series, you'll like this one, and if you've read any prior books in the Wheel of Time series, this one will answer a lot of your questions. Apart from a few relatively minor hiccups, it has all the strengths of the best prior books in the series. Very much worth reading.----Edit: now that the book's been out for a bit, I can tell things are back on track because I find myself buying copies of "Eye of the World" to give to friends again. That's something I hadn't done in a long while.

I gazed upon the map of the world where I have spent so many enjoyable, frustrating, mind boggled hours and tears filled my eyes. I felt like I was reacquainting myself with an old, much loved friend. Like so many others, I began reading the Wheel of Time series almost 2 decades ago. And, again, like so many others, my heart broke upon hearing the news of Robert Jordan's passing. He created such a vivid, real world, unlike anything I had encountered before or since. When I heard the torch had been passed to Mr. Sanderson, I was elated the story would be brought to conclusion, if a bit worried at how well the vision would be upheld. I would be dishonest if I said the transition between authors was seamless, but I did seriously love the book, largely because of some of the differences in style. I like the way the characters seem to have matured. There is added depth to the characterizations, a deeper PoV, that I really enjoyed, especially with Rand, Egwene and Nynaeve. As was mentioned in another review, the women are portrayed a little more realistically, with less hair pulling and sniffing. I liked it. I also had no problem with Mat, unlike others. He has always been my favorite character and I look forward to his story. It seems the next installment will focus on the Tower of Ghenjei and Moraine, in which Mat should figure prominently. I purposely did not reread the series prior to The Gathering Storm, which I think made the transition to Mr. Sanderson less jarring than it may have been had I recently been immersed in RJ's vision. Nonetheless, there were a few moments where the story let up enough for me to realize a different bard had taken up the song. The detail was not as prominent in this book, and when there were descriptions, they were not as rich. As one who has traveled this world for years, though, my memories took over and were able to interject the appropriate detail. WOW, did this book move the story along. It's as if the first 10 books were the slow ascent, filled with anticipation and anxiety, clicking and clacking the car to the top of the coaster. Knife of Dreams was the turn as you approach the 1st hill, just barely able to see what lies ahead. The Gathering Storm is the beginning of the rapid race to the end. The end is near and the story has been entrusted to a capable hand. I plan to enjoy the ride...

It begins in Toronto, in the years after the smart drug revolution. Any high school student with a chemjet and internet connection can download recipes and print drugs, or invent them. A seventeen-year-old street girl finds God through a new brain-altering drug called Numinous, used as a sacrament by a new Church that preys on the underclass. But she is arrested and put into detention, and without the drug, commits suicide.

Lyda Rose, another patient in that detention facility, has a dark secret: she was one of the original scientists who developed the drug. With the help of an ex-government agent and an imaginary, drug-induced doctor, Lyda sets out to find the other three survivors of the five who made the Numinous in a quest to set things right.

A mind-bending and violent chase across Canada and the US, Daryl Gregory's Afterparty is a last chance to save civilization, or die trying.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, April 2014: Lyda Rose and her colleagues had the best intentions: to create a drug that would cure schizophrenia. Instead, she's in a mental hospital, saddled with a permanent hallucination of a doctor with angel's wings. When a newly admitted teenaged girl commits suicide rather than deal with withdrawal, Lyda recognizes the symptoms and realizes that her drug has hit the streets. She arranges her own release, helps her lover (a paranoid ex-government agent) break out of the hospital, and tries to find out where the drug is coming from. Combining elements of near-future science fiction, cyber-thriller, and whodunit mystery, Daryl Gregory takes us on a pulse-racing, brain-bending adventure that reads like the enthusiastic retelling of a crazy acid trip--twisted and imaginative and frightening and funny and intense. Along the way we investigate drug-pushing churches, we double-cross a gang run by ruthless old ladies, we team up with Native American smugglers, we dodge a split-personality urban rancher, and perhaps most dangerous of all, we try to track down Lyda's old scientific team in search of answers. --Robin A. Rothman

Questions about illusions (4.5 stars) By TChris Afterparty begins with a parable, which seems appropriate for a book that is about the intersection of science and God. Daryl Gregory's characters offer a variety of viewpoints about the nature of religious belief -- some have faith, some don't -- but the novel is intended to entertain, not to persuade the reader to adopt a particular viewpoint. The entertainment level is high -- humor is easy to mine from the subject matter, the plot offers the twists of a low-key thriller with a bit of near-future technology, and the characters are pleasant company -- while the underlying themes permit minds that are open to inquiry to interpret the novel's serious side in different ways.Afterparty's protagonist is Lyda Rose, who begins the novel as a patient in a mental health institution. Lyda's issues include a history of drug abuse, unresolved grief for her dead wife, and an invisible companion. A teenage girl is admitted to the institution who had been living rough on the street until she found God, a discovery that followed her ingestion of a piece of paper that Pastor Rudy called Numinous. Lyda holds herself responsible for Numinous and she holds Numinous responsible for a very bad moment in her life, although her memory of that moment is incomplete.Numinous was created by Little Sprout, a research company that Lyda and her friends founded to develop a drug that would spur the brain's production of neurotrophins with the goal of correcting the conditions that cause schizophrenia. A side effect of the drug makes the user believe in some version of God. It also makes the user feel God's presence, often accompanied by a visual image -- in Lyda's case, an angel. Overdose, as Lyda did, and the visual image never goes away. Since Lyda is an atheist, a drug that induces a belief in God is supremely annoying to her, as is the sarcastic and quarrelsome angel. Tellingly, a child born to a character who used Numinous while pregnant experiences manifestations that have little to do with religion. The engaging story requires Lyda to reestablish contact with her partners in Little Sprout. With the help of a paranoid schizophrenic (and former intelligence officer) named Olivia who befriended Lyda in the mental institution, Lyda tries to track down the drug's manufacturer. A mysterious and dangerous man in a cowboy hat named the Vincent also has an interest in Numinous. Of course, the explanation for the reappearance of Numinous is not as simple as it appears to be. Neither is the explanation of the mysterious event from Lyda's past. All the plot threads eventually weave together to create a fun, fast-moving story.Despite its lighthearted nature, Afterparty considers serious questions. Is free will an illusion? Moral judgment aside, are we responsible for our actions? Do religions demand a belief in illusions? Is it possible for the imaginary to be real? Are illusions useful? Is religion (as Marx suggested) a metaphorical drug? Gregory allows the reader to draw his or her own conclusions to questions that are not easily answered. Among its other lessons, Afterparty makes the point that the mind is capable of conjuring all sorts of realities and that we often lack the ability to decide which are objectively real, or even to understand whether objective reality exists. Perhaps the novel's most important lesson is that it is possible to disagree about profound issues -- even about religion -- without being rude.

Those who claim uninterest in sci fi/fantasy do themselves a sad disservice if they pass up “Afterparty,” thinking it’s a genre book. What it is instead is literature – beautifully written, thoughtful and provocative – besides being a supremely entertaining and suspenseful mystery with both humor and heart. Many of the reviews already posted do a kickass job on the summary (this is a smarter than average group of reviewers – didja notice?), so I will only hit what I considered the highlights, which include Taliban granny druglords, a fried-on-meds gun-for-hire who loves only the miniature bison he raises in his Santa Monica apartment, a mute (but spunky!) child whose imaginary friends are more helpful than most, and an angel so magnificent (and powerful?) she seems to come direct from the Tony Kushner playbook. The ripped-from-tomorrow’s headlines stuff about designer drugs’ being printed by everyman in the church storeroom didn’t interest me as much as it seems to interest other people. I mean, yeah, that’s gonna happen. What’s more fun to consider (and Gregory does) is the leveling potential. (Also, you might consider re-balancing your portfolio if you own a lot of Big Pharma.) In the end, the most profound question posed by “Afterparty” is not really whether God is just a manifestation of brain chemistry but whether it matters.

By Eric Christensen AFTERPARTY by Daryl Gregory is a near-future sci-fi thriller that explores what happens when anyone can cook up a batch of the latest designer drug–or create their own–in their garage. Overdoses, mental illness, and crime are at the heart of this novel, but before I make it sound like a real downer, I should point out that AFTERPARTY is funny, clever, fast-moving, and the characters really shine. I tore through this book, and recommend it highly.AFTERPARTY begins with a parable (one of many in the book) of a young girl who experiments with a new drug, the Numinous, and experiences the divine. But when she goes through withdrawal while in detention, she commits suicide (this is on the rear cover, so I consider it a minor spoiler–in fact, I’ll just say this now MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD.). A fellow patient at the facility, Lyda Rose, recognizes the girl’s symptoms. You see, years prior, Lyda was a biochemist trying to cure schizophrenia. But when her startup was celebrating their successful drug and eminent payday, the co-creators were drugged. Terrible things happened, and they were left with a permanent reminder of their overdose in the form of a religious hallucination permanently hovering over their shoulder, or in Lyda’s case, an angel named Dr. Gloria. Understandably, they agreed to keep this drug from ever hitting the streets. And even locked away, Lyda thought that agreement was still standing.Lyda manages to get paroled to figure out which one of the co-founders is releasing Numinous. We follow Lyda (and a former-spook who redlined on the drugs of her trade) from Canada to the American southwest, interacting with drug dealers who manufacture drugs using chemjet printers, make deals with full-time smugglers and part-time human traffickers, explore smart homes, and evade corporate-sponsored hitmen.Along the way, readers also confront the limits and limitations of reality and perception. What is God if our perceptions are the result of chemical reactions? If there’s nothing beyond those reactions, is there free will? What if a person’s brain chemistry has been warped by drugs? What do you think, and what does the angel on your shoulder think? If there is disagreement, what does that mean?AFTERPARTY is Gregory’s fourth book, but my first exposure to him, and I’m a new fan. The pacing is quick, the plot is tight, and the writing is quite clever. Chapter breaks are spiked with surprises or reversals that made me question and re-think what I had just read (putting me in a watered down version of Lyda’s hallucinatory world). His worldbuilding is also wonderfully done, extrapolating near-future communications technology, transportation, the democratization of drug-making, and more. But it’s Gregory’s characters that I really enjoyed, particularly Lyda and Dr. Gloria. Lyda is driven by fear and regret, and it causes her to do some bad things, including using her friends for her own ends. She’s self-aware, and tries to rationalize or downplay her errors, or at least deflect them using sarcasm (that I found colorful, witty, and well-written). But even then, there’s only so much her conscience can take–even Dr. Gloria will fly away to sulk if Lyda goes too far.AFTERPARTY is a quick, clever, and fun read. You’ll probably finish it in an evening or over a weekend. But it’s not a toss-away thriller. There are deeper issues here about technology, chemistry, and religion. And the way Gregory handles them kicks his novel up to a higher tier. Highly recommended.
