By matt w radcliffe This book has some great material about use of typography in design, with great examples and anecdotes from advertising campaigns dating back to the early days of design. The problem is the execution of the book. The sections designed for reading are overshadowed by confusing side bars and cut-lines for the examples. This book, with great information, is really hard to read beacuse of these flaws in layout.

I didn't find it here. This book has a few good examples of ads, but they are the size of postage stamps around the outside of the pages. The text of the book itself is so small, you will not be able to read it without your glasses. The unspoken theme of the book is on creating off-the-wall, innovative ads that win awards, rather than creating something that will catch your customer's eye. If you want to win a Clio, this may be your book. If you want to design ads that might sell your product, look elsewhere.

With your Ayer number one, text wrap the intitial caps and hang the punctuation By Robin If you understood my headline maybe you don't need this book as you've probably reached a level of deep typographic and design awareness but if your not quite sure then this fascinating title is well worth buying.Every year there are several new books on design published and I tend to group them in two categories: over-designed with images afloat in a sea of white page space and (most annoyingly) small text type and even smaller captions so you can only read the book in sunlight. The other category includes books with good, solid, editorial perspectives that get to grips with the subject matter and present design concepts: practical and theoretical, with clarity in a well designed format. I think Alex White's book definitely falls into this latter group. With 1500 plus illustrations the book is the opposite of those titles that seem to think that just a few large images will do. Nearly every spread has fourteen lines of text, either side of the gutter with the illustrations making a border round them. This main text sets out ad design concepts and the images show practical examples. Fortunately all the illustrative material is captioned. I did notice though, that on a few pages, with so many ad reproductions, some are too small to take in the point being made about the headline or design. The three ad sections: Strategies; Design; Typography. They all basically cover print advertising and there is a short overview of billboards, TV, radio and web design. The section that really interested me was Typography. In sixty-five pages White packs in a remarkable amount of type knowledge, so much, in fact, that on first reading you'll probably miss a lot. For instance, on page 169, there is an ad by the great designer Herb Lubalin and next to it the same ad with a couple of vertical red lines added to show how Lubalin optically lined up the stacked headline. Page 198 has block of display text and on 199 the same text is vastly improved by using nine examples of typographic finesse. This sort of content is very typical of the practical ideas and suggestions throughout the book. The title was designed by the author and well printed (with 175 screen) on gloss paper. Considering it is about design I thought it rather odd that the cover, title, imprint and contents pages were rather subdued in their presentation but a minor point when considering the wealth of information in all the other pages. White's book is just the thing to help you knock that bright idea into a classy graphic reality.***SEE SOME INSIDE PAGES by clicking 'customer images' under the cover.

Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame baseball player Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash on a relief supply mission on December 31st, 1972. In this fictional novel his plane does not crash! What will the rest of his baseball career be like? What will the remainder of his life look like? The story of Clemente’s Lost Years are told through the voice of Rico, a team trainer hired by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1972. Rico, who is now an old man, befriends a young boy in his native Puerto Rico. The boy takes an interest in Rico’s stories about the old days with Clemente and the Pirates. Rico tells the boy every detail he can remember from over 40 years ago including working to heal Clemente’s chronic back and neck pain, and how he is invited on the near-fatal plane flight to Nicaragua. He tells of the dangerous experience of landing in the earthquake-ravaged country. Rico also follows Clemente closely through the last seasons of his baseball career, his big retirement ceremony, the building and grand opening of the Ciudad Deportiva Youth Sports Facility in Puerto Rico, and the rest of his life after baseball. Clemente’s career is well documented with his 3000 hits, 12 Gold Gloves, and a .317 lifetime batting average. This novel lets the reader’s imagination explore The Lost Years after December 31st, 1972.

Great "what if" scenario for baseball fans By Anthony Rutigliano This novel is very well crafted and brings to life the environment of the 1970's Pirates. As a lifelong Pirates fan, I found enjoyment reliving those years with the big hitters- Stargell, Mazeroski, Sanguillen, Clemente, and the bunch. After the shocking plane crash, which shortened Clemente's career, I never considered what might have happened in the aftermath. In my opinion, the strength of this novel is how the story weaves the actual events of the time together with the fiction to create a new reality. Of course, no one will ever know what would have happened to Roberto Clemente after his plane crash, but the scenario in the novel is about as plausible as any I can think of.I have personally met Danny Murtaugh on a number of occasions and I was happy to see that he was portrayed realistically here.I enjoyed it. I think most baseball fans will also.

By Amazon Customer The premise of the story is good, but you do not speak to a 10 year old Puerto Rican boy using the the vocabulary that the uneducated Rico uses. The words and phraseology is way out of place in the slums of Puerto Rico. There is overkill when bringing in famous baseball players. It is too bad, because the story has lots of good ideas, but it suddenly rushes to and end. It is as though the author ran out of time and needed to finish the book or he would starve. Again, too bad, because it could have been a great story. It does have a twist at the end, that was unpredictable.

I was pleasantly surprised. I thought I knew everything about Roberto Clemente, but this book suggests some new things I had never thought about before. After all, he’s spent the last few years as a minor pawn in the Game of Houses while keeping one foot planted firmly in the grave. But between the job offer he can’t refuse from a wizard he doesn’t trust, and the appearance of a cult bent on sending him to the afterlife, his days are about to get a whole lot worse. He’s used to the threat of death. Death making threats? That’s new.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. First book was great, this one is better! By Jim Mercer After reading the first book in the series (Dead of Night), I was hooked. Fortunately, the sequel here was ready to go... and I read it immediately following book 1.If anything, the sequel was better than the first book! (Which is saying something, because that book was really good. :) )This book creates a certain amount of chaotic closure to everything in the first book. Things aren't as seemingly clear-cut as they were in book 1... forgive me for saying this but "The plot thickens" in book 2. You find yourself - much like the central character, Conor - wondering who the good guys are, and who the baddies really are!A good, riveting read, and one very much worth having.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Action & harsh humor in a thrilling mix! By DabOfDarkness Note: This is Book 2 in the series and can probably be read on it’s own as the story does remind readers of pertinent things that happened in Book 1 with enough detail to understand this book on its own. This story happens perhaps 2 years after the events of Book 1, Dead of Night. Conor Night is still working as a Ghost doing the odd bit of thievery and the occasional mayhem and murder. He’s barely able to afford his illegal cancer meds. Technically, he’s dying. It isn’t pretty. But it does give him the abilities of a necromancer. In Book 1, we learned a bit about the Game of Houses when Conor was hired by one to steal from another and ended up protecting a scion of one of these powerful Houses. Mostly, these Houses work in the background, their leaders being powerful magic users. The average public doesn’t know of their existence even though their lives are often shaped by the machinations of these powerful entities. Now, Conor is once again sucked back into this world that he tried so hard to walk away from. Conor is offered the job of stealing back the item that was stolen and restolen in Book 1, a large stone with magical properties. Taking on this job could mean pissing off not one, but two of the Houses. On top of that, Conor is being hunted by a cult, the Necros. They are hell-bent on sending him to the afterlife and they say they were sent by Death itself. Conor doesn’t doubt this, not after the odd things he has seen and sensed with his magical dice and bone mask. Conor isn’t ready for the Other Side yet. Frankly, he is afraid of what awaits him there.Once again, we have an excellent mix of action, mystery, reflection, and character development. Conor is joined by two friends he made in Book 1 – Amos and Prythi. There’s plenty of gun play, necromancer magic, and Prythi’s computer hacking skills. Amos is his usual charming self with colorful tales of his tom-cat ways and even more colorful language. He has his moments of solid friendship that make him lovable. My one quibble with this book is with Prythi; quite frankly, she sounds and acts too much like Dani from Book 1. Conor even makes note of that more than once. But even with that nod from the author via the main character, I would have preferred that either Dani was around or that Prythi had her own distinct characteristics.Even with that one criticism, I still really enjoyed the hell out of this book. Conor has this past that he isn’t always proud of and he spends much of his remaining life trying to make up for it. It gets good and interesting when he has to make some tough, and sometimes questionable, calls to do so. He’s a fascinating character and the fact that he isn’t all superhero muscles and good looks just makes him that much more engaging.Towards the end, there was this reveal that I was totally not expecting. In retrospect, it was completely obvious and I was pleased that the author kept me distracted with Necros, bone masks, and Amos’s tales of his ex-wife so that I didn’t see this big thing until it hit me between the eyes. And, yes, this big thing is pretty darn awesome. The ending definitely raises the stakes for Book 3, which I am eagerly awaiting.I received a copy of this audiobook at no cost from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.Narration: Jeff Hays set a new standard for awesome narration with Book 1 in this series and he does not disappoint with the narration of this book. His range for male and female characters is pretty incredible, having some of the most realistic female voices for a male narrator. Also, he goes the extra mile with making phone call conversations sound like half the conversation is taking place via phone and also the choir of voices that reside in the bone mask (rather spooky!). Add to that the voice of Death and the voice of Conor’s new employer for this escapade and we have an excellent vocal performance!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Ghosts and Magic on a Roll! By Jeff Dead Red is an excellent follow up to Dead of Night. Conor has established a new awkward way to run his "business" with Prithi, but events quickly unfold out of nowhere. Given a big job from a shocking name from the first book, Conor has to travel to Vegas and retrieve the same MacGuffin from the first book from someone he thought was his ally. And here I begin to sound too broad because I simply don't want to give anything away.At least as good as Dead of Night, if not, better. New characters so good I forgot how much I missed some of them from the first book, new abilities, more action, more user types, and more uses for the mask! Don't miss this one, and if you haven't read Dead of Night or listened to the audio (I narrated it!) do yourself a favor.Narrator, and Conor's biggest fanJeff Hays

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Worthless. By Armed Serenity Perhaps the most worthless episode yet. Book is written as filler meat just because an episode needs to be pumped out. I've never spoken against the author's deliberate IP steals(Star Wars, Star Trek, Mechwarrior, Battlemech, Dragon Ball), and current media trends as his source of material... but trying to be Star Force and Fifty shades? F*ck that. This book is more about the author's conflicting RL sexuality than science fiction. Garbage.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. I agree with the other reviewers. We don't care ... By techieman33 I agree with the other reviewers. We don't care about arc commandos training. We want more Paul, Jason, Morgan, and the other trailblazers. Battles, Psyonics, tech upgrades, etc. This is pointless filler that no one cares about. It could have been one chapter of starting the arc commandos and what their role in star force was to be.

It seemed to be exactly what I needed at the time, and kept my interest from beginning to end.It should be noted that I hadn't read the previous 2 installments of the Grim series before reading this for review, and that was O.K. Sorta. The book was absolutely fine as a standalone, but now I have 2 more books that I've bumped up in my TBRSoon list. :)Storm Warned had one of those despicable villains that you love to hate, heroes and heroines that you cheer on every step of the way, an interesting and beautifully built world with some very cool intricacies, and a supporting cast that will definitely make you want more.Liam is a tortured hero. He had a bad break in life and it caused him to put aside his dreams and secret himself away. You can't help but feel for him, and while there were times I sort of wanted to shake him, it all played out beautifully. Caris was fun, feisty and independent, a true counterpoint to his misery. The two of them together blended harmoniously to create a beautiful melody of love (yes that was a terrible punish statement, as the storyline very heavily revolves around music, something I absolutely adored!!).I am really looking forward to reading more in Ms. Harper's Grim world, and I definitely recommend Storm Warned if you're in the mood for some Fae.

From Caris being taken by the evil Fae, Maelgyn, to her becoming human again, naked, in front of Liam. Embarrassing for her and wonderful for Liam. Even with a concussion he knew immediately what he wanted. Love, love, love Ranyon. What an awesome character. Love his “dontcha know” and “I have a charm fer that, a’course ” Although he was an Ellyll the narrator referred to him as an Essiss. I don’t get that pronunciation. Now, let’s talk about the other characters. Maelgyn, the insane Prince who wanted to rule the world of the Fae as well as the human world. Rhedyn, Maedgyn’s “girlfriend.” Aurddolen, the Draigddynion ruler. Lucien, Lord of The Wild Hunt and Queen Gwenhidw. Morgan and Jay of Storm Warrior. There was a little sexual tension but no sex until the last chapter. This was a wonderful book but I think I would have become very frustrated if I’d just tried to read it and try to figure out how to pronounce these weird names. I left that up to Justine Eyre and she did a great job.I got this book free with KindleUnlimited.

By Mandy Lou The first thing you need to know is that this is part of a collection. It’s listed as number three in a series. But it can stand alone. Only the characters and their history transfer from book to book. At least that is what I have been told. Because I have the ability to find and read books that have predecessors that I have yet to read. This one focuses on Caris and Liam. Caris is a Celtic woman that denied a haughty fae and was cursed to be a grim hound (a hound of the hunt). She struggles to escape and finally manages to. During a hunt that rides right through Liam’s farm. Liam is a broken musician who had his heart ripped and tossed away. I think he blames his music so he tosses it away. Just the sound of violin makes his heart ache. Which is proved true when Caris plays.Harper has an ability to make you relate with the characters. She also has a fantastic way of blending the fantastical of the faes with gritty realism. This gives us our villain that we love to hate. Storm Warned is a blended love story that is action packed and filled to the brim with sweet romance. I just love her descriptions of the hunt. It just popped off the page, and helped you imagine you there. My favorite character was Ranyon. He is a funny. His interactions with those around him just makes the interludes with him hilarious. This book is able to make you feel what the characters feel and leave you aching for more.I really enjoyed Storm Warned. I did not feel lost even though I had not read the first two. The story swept me up in its arms and stole my heart. 5 out of 5 stars. A great book to curl up with when you want a sweet romance. Now I must go read the others. A Beginner’s Guide to Computer

Technological advancement and progression is enhancing by leaps and bounds. Every new day turns out to be a milestone for something more sophisticated and advanced. As the involvement of information technology and soft infrastructure enhances in the modern day, there has been a number of issues which need a clear and accurate attention. Hacking is one such issue. Hackers have long operated as some unseen, hidden, and malicious force, but as knowledge and information enhances day by day, so now the domain of computer sciences and information technology is also trying to address this topic and enable the users to gain knowledge about hacking and enhancing their system’s security. In this book I have discussed the hacker’s domain in a common man’s language. Starting from the most basic level is significant in achieving a greater level of success. So as hacking is prevalent and common nowadays, so everyone should have knowledge about it.

Even though hacking pertains to a vast area of knowledge and issues, the major topics which will be presented in a detailed and elaborate way include the following:

  • A preliminary account of hacking, as a regime of information technology knowledge and its connections and areas of concern which need to be discussed and explored.
  • The basic activities which hackers perform. A step-by-step discussion of activities which are followed by hackers during any hacking venture.
  • An account of the hacking practices which enable the attack over emails and the Windows operating system.
  • The different types of hacking attacks which can target web servers.

It is fun to learn on how to hack, and it is also helpful so you can protect your own files from other hackers. You will learn basics of hacking and how to make use of it to make your security system even more resilient from these unwanted intrusions. So I think hacking has advantage and disadvantage at the same time. This book is fit for those computer addicts out there, make use of your knowledge. Will definitely recommend this book.

It's everything it says on the cover By John H.Dargan When I was younger I was able to hack into the schools computers and get passed the internets banned pages, but in no way would I think i'm a hacker. My knowledge on the matter was good for those trivial things I wanted to get passed whilst in school. This book did have some areas where the pages seemed to be filled up by large fonts but the information provided was ideal. The book gives brief descriptions of loads of aspects you need to consider when hacking of which none of them I had even heard of. So from a beginners point of view, I'd say this book would be great for bringing to the air certain aspects for deeper research of.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Computer hacking guide for beginners By Laura Bynes This book lays the groundwork for learning everything you need to start hacking right away. This book is a must read for any future hacker. This book also provides the reader with some useful basic tips to avoid being hacked maliciously. Short, but great read for a hacking newbie. It is good to know the threat so you can perform it yourself and provide a way to protect your computer system from the different kinds of hacking.

“My legal name where I currently reside in the city of Liege, Belgium, in the year 2010 A.D., is Gaspar Valessi, but that is not my real name. The name I was given some 30,000 years ago, when I was born in a Paleolithic settlement in the region that is now called Germany-- the name my father gave me shortly after I was voided, bloody and howling, from my mother's womb-- is Gon." So begins the saga of the immortal Gon, a 30,000 year old vampire. This, the first volume of his memoirs, recounts his mortal life in prehistoric Germany alongside his male companion Brulde and his two wives, the Neanderthal Eyya and his Cro-Magnon mate Nyala, and details the fearsome events that lead to his transformation from man to undying monster. This Revised and Expanded Edition includes more than 30,000 words of new material, adding depth to much loved characters and more fully realizing the author's vision of the Oldest Living Vampire and the prehistoric world that gave birth to him. By turns beautiful and subversive, poetic and seductive, the Oldest Living Vampire Saga is like no other vampire series you've ever read! That was certainly the case with The Oldest Living Vampire Tells All. First off, I hated the title. It sounded too much like Allan Gurganus' The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, a book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Then there's the author's name - Rod Redux - which sounds a bit like the stage name of a actor in '80s porn. Finally, the description of the book made it sound like Jean Auel had ingested some sort of hallucinogenic drug and decided to plop a vampire down in the middle of her Clan of the Cave Bear series. Uh-uh. No sir! No way! Finally, over a long weekend, I wanted something quick and escapist to read and settled on Redux's Oldest Living Vampire Tells All. Expecting a campy vampiric satire, I started reading and made an interesting discovery. The book wasn't bad at all. In fact, I found myself almost compulsively turning pages wanting to find out more about Gon, the 30,000-year-old member of a hunter-gatherer society who becomes a vampire.Sure, there were places that strained credibility. For one, many researchers now believe that our ancestors and the Neanderthals had little or no interactions ... certainly not the interbreeding that takes place in the novel. Still, I have to admit being intrigued by Redux's description of Gon's family life; a group marriage consisting of Gon's male partner, a Neanderthal female and a Cro Magnon female. This is not the world of Jean Auel's Ayla and her hunky cave-stud Jondalar. As some reviewers have mentioned, there are some fairly graphic desciptions of sex in the book, but those hardly rise to the level of paleo-porn some reviewers describe. If there's one frustration I do have with The Oldest Living Vampire Tells All it's that there's a lot of build-up to Gon actually becoming a vampire ... and then no real explanation for the origin of vampirism. Granted, it's only the first in a series, so I'll hold off judging it too harshly because it leaves questions unanswered. All in all, I found the book to be a unique entry in the plethora of vampire fiction available today. And I'm looking forward to re-entering the world of Gon in future volumes of his saga. The Oldest Living Vampire series may not be a classic, but as an enjoyable way to pass time I was pleasantly surprised.

The reviews and the description at amazon (A blend of historic fact, fearsome fantasy and explicit sex)caught my attention. It was an interesting, well written, and enjoyable story. Even though it's not exactly my type, I'll be reading part 2 to see what happens to Gon next. As for all the reviewers who were shocked by the sex... well I guess if you are easily shocked this book is not for you. However there have been far more graphic sex scenes in so called romance novels.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Beyond My Expectations By Vamp Girl This book, once opened, was incredibly hard to put down. I am constantly looking for more to read about "The Vampire" and I can tell you I was severly upset when the book came to its final reading sentences. I wanted to know more about what happend to Gon after the glacier era. This book is believable in the fact no other author that I have yet to read from, has gone to depths and details of vampirism. He takes you back 30,000 years when he was just a young boy in his tribe. Back then the Saber toothed cats were still roaming the lands and other intelligent species besides humans were still living. One would have to read this book to understand. If anyone out there is one who is always searching for answers and evidece (if you will) that vampires are real, this is a great book to read. The way the author talks to you in the book, draws you in. He asks questions to you, to make you understand and realize that vampirism isn't fancy and glory like Hollywood shows it to be. I need more from this author! This book is incredible!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. An unputdownable read! By woven 4.5 starsClaimed is book two in the Servants of Fate series, and I thought it was even better than Marked! I felt that the world became more unique and the characters more fascinating in this book. It was just an unputdownable read! While Marked was about Eli and Cacy, this time the story revolved around Eli's sister Galena and Cacy's brother Declan. Galena is a scientist, working on finding cures for the diseases ravaging the world, and Declan is a paramedic, part of the powerful Ferry clan, who wants to honor his father's dying wish of protecting Galena in order to save the future. We met Galena and Declan in the previous book, and it was clear from the beginning that they were going to have a deep, emotional bond. What happened to Galena and her brother years ago was devastating and traumatizing, and I'm glad Galena had someone as patient and protective as Declan at her side. They worked so well together, and their relationship was sweet and intense. I honestly couldn't get enough! After reading Claimed, it's no surprise I'm eagerly anticipating the release of the final book Fated. (I hope a certain intriguing Kere is one of the main characters!) This series is set in a harsh, yet captivating world full of wonderful characters, non-stop action, and amazing relationships. I highly recommend it!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Superlative By Leiah “Memories are nothing but a collection of electrical pulses and chemicals. Neurotransmitters sliding into receptors like hands into gloves. Acetylcholine. Serotonin. My body is a complex machine. A conglomeration of cells, each one with a designated purpose. – Galena Margolis – ClaimedGalena Margolis is brilliant. Brilliant – and broken. Body and soul damaged – and then there is her mind. Her brilliant mind, which holds the secrets of a vaccine which could be the salvation of a world flooded and destroyed. We first met Galena in Marked, the first in the Servants of Fate series, when she and her brother, Eli, arrived in Boston from the ‘desert wastelands’ of Philadelphia. The physical world qualifies as a ‘dystopia’ as climate change has destroyed much of the earth, leaving the places that remain changed beyond all comprehension. It is a bad, bad, very dangerous world out there, and Galena is in more danger than she could possibly imagine.Claimed picks up right after Marked, as Galena and Eli find their place, and reach for some sense of stability after Galena’s near death – and Eli’s rise from death. For this isn’t just a dystopian novel – it is a novel of life and death, of change and balance, and of a world where nothing will ever be as it was before. For the Ferrys are real – not just the richest family in Boston, the Ferry family are actual Ferrymen – servants of death who help the dead across the Veil and into the afterlife. Eli’s girlfriend and paramedic partner, Cacy, is a Ferryman, and Galena is someone – something – who could spell the salvation of the world – and someone wants her dead for it.I couldn’t say enough good about Marked, and my love of this series continues with the second installment. Sarah Fine is sharp, mercilessly realistic in a magical world overlaid upon a world destroyed by human angst and self-centred greed, and mightily creative. This is a world of layers – layers of well-developed characters, of fantastical thought processes and creative characters and worlds. I can’t recommend this book highly enough for those who like their books to have more than a single storyline, more than one dimensional characters, just more.I received this book from the publisher in return for a realistic review. I hope you will try the series – I loved it.

Margolis is traumatized after almost being killed the week before (also from a past brutal attack), but she is continuing with her research of a special vaccine (along with the help of her assistants Ankita and Jian). Galena is already doing human trials with five subjects. Galena’s vaccine is the only hope of stopping/conquering the plagues that are killing millions of people. Someone, though, is determined to stop Galena from creating the vaccine.Galena needs to be kept safe and alive, but how can that goal be achieved. Declan Ferry has taken an interest in Galena. He would like to get to know her, but time is not on their side. Cacy Kerry (Declan’s sister) comes up with a plan but are Galena and Declan ready to pay the price? Galena is going to have to overcome her violent attack in order to keep herself safe and create the vaccine that is badly needed.Someone is taking control of the Ker’s and making them go against the wishes of the Lord of Kere’s, Jason Moros. Who is behind these attacks? Aislin Ferry is now the Charon (as well as the head of the family company Psychopomps) and has a lot on her plate. She is trying to undo everything her wicked brother, Rylan did while in control as well as handle the attacks. Someone is trying to change the fabric of fate and everyone is going to have to work together to keep it from unraveling. To understand Claimed you need to read the first book in the series, Marked. I give Claimed 4 out of 5 stars. Please be aware that the book has a rape scene (Galena’s attack was mentioned in Marked and described in more detail in Claimed) and two sex scenes. I give Claimed 4 out of 5 stars. I liked the story but not as well as Marked. This book read more like a romance novel and did not have the intensity of Marked.I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression, One Small Change at a Time, by Alex Korb PhD

Review “Alex Korb’s The Upward Spiral is a masterful account of the neuroscience behind depression, as well as of concrete steps that will lead to an ‘upward spiral’ out of depression. Korb explains neuroscience in a clear and accessible way, and shows how various brain malfunctions lead to different symptoms of depression. … Throughout the [book], Korb circles back to some of his own experiences, making his account all the more powerful and real. This book is a must-read for those who struggle with depression and want some guidance on how to understand and manage it—as well as for therapists who want to learn more about the neuroscience of depression and its treatment.” —Elyn Saks, Orrin B. Evans Professor of law, psychology, psychiatry, and the behavioral sciences at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, and author of The Center Cannot Hold “Alex Korb's The Upward Spiral is a clear and engaging explanation of the neuroscience behind depression. Korb sheds light on this mysterious and often misunderstood disorder, and, in the process, enlightens the reader about the basics of the brain and how it shapes—and is shaped by—our moods, motivations, decisions, and actions.” —Anson Dorrance, head coach of the UNC-Chapel Hill Women's Soccer team and coauthor of The Vision of a Champion“The Upward Spiral presents an engaging, accessible, and informative synthesis of the current thinking on depression and its treatment. A cohesive neuroscience perspective is skillfully interwoven with a practical guide to strategies that can both attenuate pathological negative moods, as well as enhance emotional well-being across the clinical spectrum.”  —Helen S. Mayberg, professor of psychiatry in neurology and radiology, and Dorothy C. Fuqua Chair in psychiatric neuroimaging and therapeutics at Emory University School of Medicine

For the discerning depressive By everyone's a critic I don't want to make any unscientific claims here, but I've found that a lot of the people I know who are depressed are also pretty smart. Which means that self-help books by celebrity rehab graduates and costumed spiritual gurus aren't going to be of any help. Another unscientific conjecture: in my experience, depressives tend to have finely tuned aesthetic sensibilities, which means reading clunky technical literature is a daunting challenge, particularly through the fog of one's symptoms. The Upward Spiral stands out from the pack for three significant reasons:1. It's based in evidence. This book isn't made up of snake oil panaceas, or Hallmark platitudes, or overblown pep-talk rhetoric. It's built on a foundation of clinical trials and observations of the brain, as up-to-date with contemporary neuroscience as possible.2. It reads well. The problem with writing based on scientific evidence often ends up being that the prose is dry and boring, or patronizingly dumbed-down, or frustratingly abstract. Korb is no Adam Phillips, but he writes about the structure and function of the brain more clearly than anyone else I've read in the past, frequently deploying effective analogies to familiar objects and ideas.3. It includes advice.Another problem with some science-based texts is that knowing what synapses fire at what time doesn't really help you figure out what to do outside your skull. Korb gives a suggestion on practically every page. This book isn't going to cure you. It addresses a specific aspect of depression: the way symptoms reinforce themselves and inspire new ones, resulting in the downward spiral that drags you down to your deepest depths. The optimistic implication of the title is that just like a small trigger can drag you down, an effective intervention can start enough momentum to carry you up.I'm of the belief that if you're depressed, you probably have to figure out how and why it started, and determine what specific patterns of thought originated as a result. That means seeing a therapist or analyst, possibly for a long time. But in the meantime, you have to get yourself out of bed every day, and this book gives you some idea how. To my knowledge, it's the best of its kind.

This book compelled me to pop my cherry. Ever since my father passed away 5 years ago via an unexpected heart attack, I've been duking it out with severe depression and anxiety. I was on a downward spiral before then, but I went much deeper into the abyss. Up until I read this book this past Friday, I suffered atleast one panic attack a day. Chances are if you're here, you know what I'm talking about, for the uninitiated, it literally feels like you're drowning under a tidal wave. I wouldn't recommend it..but I do recommend The Upward Spiral by Alex Korb because since that day I haven't suffered one. Don't get me wrong, the waves are still there, but more calm, less electric. There is no miracle cure, but with this book I know I'm on my way, and that is not an ordinary utterance from me. I don't want it to sound like I drank the koolaid, or ate some sort of special pudding, this book requires no leap of faith, it requires experimentation and pragmatism. Please, if any of this makes sense to you, check it out. No one deserves to feel that way (with very few exceptions), and take it from me, a downward spiral is just an upward spiral waiting to happen. Lots of love.

Hampton This is the best no-nonsense, no BS book on depression I've ever read. Alex explains everything in a science-based but easily understandable way that anyone can understand without having to be a neuroscientist. I also appreciates that he emphasized neither the "victim of biology/circumstance" nor the Pollyanna "just think positive thoughts" approach to depression. A depressed brain is just a brain with certain patterns that can be changed. Alex provides a firm scientific foundation for how a person can begin the process of changing the depressed patterns of their brain. The book empowers the individual to take control of their mind and brain. I'm a brain blogger and got many good blogs out of this book. Thank you, Alex!

From red-hot New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant comes NIGHT'S BLAZE (The Dark Kings): Part II, set in the lush Highlands of Scotland, where love and danger collide-and ignite...

He was virile, persuasive, and masculine. His rugged good looks turned heads, but in a suit, he looked dashing and powerful. A combination no woman could ignore. And he was sitting next to her. Lily wanted to run her fingers through his long, dark brown waves and pull his head down for a kiss. And if he didn't quit looking at her as if he wanted to take her right there, she just might.

Lily Ross is taking the first step in building a new life for herself. Still reeling from a relationship that nearly broke her spirit, Lily is wary of her attraction to brawny, brooding Rhys. The passion burning so brightly between them is a potent temptation, but any entanglement is destined to end in disaster. Yet when a spectre from Lily's past threatens their growing bond, Rhys is forced to choose with his heart, or lose this woman who has become his one chance at salvation...

The further we get into Night's Blaze the more enthralled I become! In Part 2 Lily and Rhys continue their journey towards each other. Rhys is finally in a place where he realizes that Lily means something. More than just a woman he finds attractive, something special, dare I say even his mate? But he also knows that Lily is hiding something and has no clue what it could be.Lily on the other hand is still in a place of confusion. She has to make a choice, should she save her brother or the women of Dreagan. Can it be even possible to do both? Who can she trust? But no matter what, Lily is not going to allow anyone to keep her down anymore. She wants to become the strong woman she was raised to be.Tentatively they turn to each other but Rhys is worried about Lily's secrets and Lily is sure that whatever she chooses, she is going to lose Rhys...Rhi is fighting the darkness in a very real way. She truly believes that she is going to loose this battle. The harder she fights, the farther away the light seems to be. Even so, she remains an ally to the Kings.Henry from MI5 is fighting to just stay alive. Captured by Ulrik... he escapes but has discovered that his attraction to Rhi might be returned.. Even though the Kings warn him against falling for a fae, Henry is determined. Will this attraction cause stress between Henry and the Kings?Ah, yes... what about Ulrik? On my review of Part 1 I was convinced that Ulrik wasn't the bad boy.. but during part 2. I have to wonder maybe he is the evil behind everything.. The fingers are all pointing towards him.. I don't know if it's a red herring or the truth. I don't want it to be Ulrik, I want him to be redeemed and allowed back into Dreagan but is my want interfering with reality? I really believe it .. shoot I don't know what I believe.Dang, Donna Grant is good! The world is heating up for the Dark Kings and the battle is coming way too soon. Can't wait until next week for Part 3 of the Night's Blaze Serial..ShauniThis review is based on the ARC of Night's Blaze: Part 2, provided by netgalley

Night's Blaze (Part 2) - Fallen Dragon By Alima Livzletlivz NOTE: Night’s Blaze is a four-part book, and should be read in sequence, and the four parts will be published as one single book coming in April 2015.Lily Ross has left behind a torturous past and is trying to make a life for her in Dreagan. Loved, supported and befriended by the wives of the Dragon Kings, she is trying to get over the betrayal that had left too many scars on her body and soul. Yet seeing the enigmatic Dragon King Ryhs, stirs a desire in her that she has stemmed for a long time. The sparks that flare between Lily and Rhys burns fierce and they finally let the fire consume them with its passion and heat. Even as they explore the intense feelings between them, the past in Lily’s life rears its ugly head with a vengeance and the power to destroy the relationship between Rhys and Lily. Can Lily overcome the fear and trust her heart with Rhys to protect her and can Rhys with his limited powers and fighting an unknown evil, choose with his heart and safe the fragile bond from breaking…Part Two of Night’s Blaze continues to woo its readers with its intense passion, danger and the fiery Dragon Kings fighting to protect the innocent.Received an ARC from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley for an honest review

Night's Blaze: Part 2 explains how he survives to fight another day. The cost of the book is worth it just to read how all that happens. However, I knew Donna Grant would not make it a clear-cut rescue. As I thought, she leaves me with even more questions. No one has more questions that Rhys. Many of his are unanswered as the conflict heats up in this part too. His feelings for Lily explode but still he fights the meaning of them. If only Rhys and Lily would have an honest-to-goodness heart-to-heart talk! Meanwhile, Lily decides to stand up for herself but again it is unclear who will pay for her newfound courage. A tattoo does not make one a bona fide heroine. I applaud her taking a stand but a little help from friends would benefit everyone. However, as usual in second parts the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. This is not a story to stop reading. Part Three of Night’s Blaze is a must read for me now. Even more than the other Dark King books I‘m finding it to be a compelling read.Copy provided by Net Galley for an honest review.

The survivors have lost much. Friends, children, parents. Ken is gone. Now, they must continue their struggle to survive, more lost and alone than ever. They are lost, alone, frightened. Nowhere to run to, and nowhere to hide from the enemies that stalk them... or the old friends who still hunt them. It is only a matter of time not a question of if they will die, only when. Not a question of if they will be killed, only where they will be buried... and how long their bodies will stay that way. Because in this new world nothing is sacred. Life is cheap, and death is just another doorway to a living Hell on Earth.

And yes, I am going to ultimately end up paying the full price of a hardcover book to get to the end of this series. Don't care - it's worth it. It is just a wonderfully fun, funny and inventive zombie/alien series. I actually enjoyed this installment more than some of the previous ones, despite the longer wait for its release. And it was a longer wait. I had to actually go back and reread installment 5 because I forgot some what occurred.I felt I actually did get some answers in this installment - and some unexpected and nice twists as well. Looking forward to the next installment.

Excellent Fast Paced Zombie-Munching Fun By Charlotte Acha Michaelbrent Collings did it again! He created a fast-paced ride through an even faster collapsing world and left me dangling wanting more.I did feel the story was a bit TOO fast and far too short. There were some things that I think could have slowed down and been developed more, rather than to put out a book to feed the fans who have been waiting. Some things were expected, but there were some twists there that had me hanging on to every word. Will I buy #7? Yes indeed. Michaelbrent Collings is one of my favorite authors and honestly? Your fans can wait an extra month or two or three to really put some "meat" in the story!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. awesome I can't get enough of MBC. By R. L. Easterwood Fast paced. Not predictable. Omg I could not put it down. When does the next book in this series come out? Not your normal zombies here. More like zombies on steroids. The only thing I didn't like was it wasn't long enough. I gave it a five because all I could think about was when was the next time I would have time to finish the book. I made time. Highly recommend for horror, zombie, action lovers.
