In a dystopian future, a self-contained valley in Argentina serves as the ‘far arena’ for those convicted of a crime. Inside the Valley: carnivorous dinosaurs generated from preserved DNA. The goal: cross the Valley to get to the Gates of Freedom. The chance of survival: no one has ever completed the journey. Convicted of crimes with little or no merit, Ben Peyton and others must battle their way across fields filled with the world’s deadliest apex predators in order to reach salvation. All the while the journey is caught on cameras and broadcast to the world as a reality show, the deaths and killings real, the macabre appetite of the audience needing to be satiated as Ben Peyton leads his team to escape not only from a legal system that’s more interested in entertainment than in justice, but also from the predators of the Valley.

There is so much to enjoy in this book!.A group of so called prisoners of the justice system are set lose with minimal supplies to race across a valley filed with dinosaurs, steep cliffs and other dangers all the while being on tv in a reality show.I just loved it! The characters and their names are AWESOME!

Cunningham I agree with the reviewer that compared this book to Running Man and Jurassic Park. I found the story to be very entertaining. I wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen to the characters and if they'd survive. Condemned "criminals" are forced to survive numerous encounters with prehistoric apex predators on the reality show "The Valley". Not all the criminals in this story are equally guilty. This very much takes reality television to the extreme. No one is truly meant to survive these encounters, but make their journey as "entertaining" as possible for the audience. I'd recommend this story to anyone who wants a quick and entertaining read. I do hope the author writes a story for "The Wheel of Torture".

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would By stcloud52@yahoo,com I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It was fast paced and kept my attention. They only bad thing I have to say is that there were from too many typos for books written in this day and age. You can only rely on spellchecker so far. Where was the editor on this?? If are two things that bug me when I am reading, it is poor grammar and typos.

22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. I really hate to do this... By K. M. Howard I love the Samantha Moon series. I'm one of those people who have bought into the terrific cliffhanger endings the author as created and I want very badly to read more of the spin-off series he seems to be creating with the addition of each new character. I do agree that Fang is creepy -- I want Samantha to realize this too and I hope she will in time as one of J.R. Rain's upcoming plots. So why did I only give this book 2 stars? I was desperately reading to get to the end of the book to find out what happens and the author leaves us Kindle readers hanging at 88% of the book's completion. Wonder what the other 12% of the book is? It's the free samples of nearly ALL HIS OTHER KINDLE BOOKS! This was annoying in the second book and equally annoying now in the 3rd one. I understand not everyone reads a book or watches a movie like I might, but I'm not arrogant enough to think I'm the only person who enjoys a mystery, gauging the pages left, the minutes left, the percent of file left, to continually readjust my thoughts on who did what and try to figure out what will happen next. That's a lot of the pleasure in reading this genre. If the book winds down at 85% it's like someone screaming "April's Fool!"The publisher, author, Amazon, whoever that decided filling the end of the book up with all this repeated material is doing a disservice to the Samantha Moon series. At $3.99 for the books, I still feel like I had a good read, but it really is annoying to know that the end of the book I'm reading is "bottom" heavy with marketing material. Amazon's search technology makes it easy to find the author's other works. I don't need the first chapter of every single one thrown into the end of all his books that I'm buying. To the powers-that-be, please stop doing this.

30 of 34 people found the following review helpful. well . . . By newgater10 I like Samantha Moon, I really do. I think she is well written and I will continue to buy her series ( as well as Knighthorse, who I really love.)BUT! At the end of this book I could practically hear the music swelling, and the cue "Please stay tuned for the next installment of Samantha Moon!" Love a good backstory and tend to read series from beginning to most recent installment but this was alittle too much. A good stand alone story will often bring more readers in, because they like a character and not everyone starts at the beginning! Now. That said. This is a very creative author who is using Kindle and various eReaders to their very best. Very strong Urban Fantasy and compelling characters, who I care about. LOVED the crossover with some of my other fave characters ( oh YES! Elvis is in the building!) Mr Rain has obvious chops and I'm looking forward to whatever he does next.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. great but ended too quickly :( By Amazon Customer It wasn't a short book but it was so good I couldn't put it down and now I have to wait for the next one. It seems like I waited forever for this book to come out, but i read it in one sitting. I loved the book though and cant wait to read the next one and find out what happens with Sam and Fang.

"The Planet Savers" was originally published in Amazing Science Fiction Stories, November 1958. This edition contains: * Introduction, by Marion Zimmer Bradley, 1979 * Foreword, by Elisabeth Waters, 2010Darkover was experiencing a flare-up of trailmen's fever, a disease that would decimate the entire human population of Darkover, from the Comyn to the Terrans. The Medical Branch at Terran HQ had the start of a cure, but in order to finish it, they needed trailmen to come out of their mountain heights and donate blood. Only one man on Darkover stood any chance of persuading the trailmen to help, but he occupied the same body as the doctor capable of doing the medical side of the work, and he was the personality the doctor had utterly suppressed. Even with hypnosis, only one of them could be active at a time, and the solution needed both of them.

The Planet Savers (Annotated) (Darkover), by Marion Zimmer Bradley, Elisabeth Waters

About the Author Marion Zimmer was born in Albany, NY, on June 3, 1930, and married Robert Alden Bradley in 1949. Mrs. Bradley received her B.A. in 1964 from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, then did graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1965-67. She was a science fiction/fantasy fan from her middle teens, and made her first sale as an adjunct to an amateur fiction contest in Fantastic/Amazing Stories in 1949. She had written as long as she could remember, but wrote only for school magazines and fanzines until 1952, when she sold her first professional short story to Vortex Science Fiction. She wrote everything from science fiction to Gothics, but is probably best known for her Darkover novels. In addition to her novels, Mrs. Bradley edited many magazines, amateur and professional, including Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine, which she started in 1988. She also edited an annual anthology called Sword and Sorceress for DAW Books. Over the years she turned more to fantasy; The House Between the Worlds, although a selection of the Science Fiction Book Club, was "fantasy undiluted". She wrote a novel of the women in the Arthurian legends - Morgan Le Fay, the Lady of the Lake, and others - entitled Mists of Avalon, which made the NY Times best seller list both in hardcover and trade paperback, and she also wrote The Firebrand, a novel about the women of the Trojan War. Her historical fantasy novels, The Forest House, Lady of Avalon, Mists of Avalon are prequels to Priestess of Avalon She died in Berkeley, California on September 25, 1999, four days after suffering a major heart attack. She was survived by her brother, Leslie Zimmer; her sons, David Bradley and Patrick Breen; her daughter, Moira Stern; and her grandchildren.

The Beginning of a Delightful Series By Anne Wingate http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VYBHHW/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_imgI have read all MZB's Darkover novels, and actually the Trailmen are discussed in one more novel, though I don't remember which one. The idea of Darkover was by no means fully developed when this book was written, but the roots were there, and the characters show up later as adults in fully developed and very good books written decades later. I strongly recommend that SF/F fans read this book; if you haven't yet discovered Darkover (though I find that unbelievable), this is a good introduction before you try to jump to The Forbidden Tower, which is an awfully long jump. I try to sort out which books are set in the Age of Chaos, which during the Terran occupation, and which after the Terrans leave and read that way, as MZB didn't write them in any kind of order and admits herself that her geography and history are somewhat muddled.Buy it. Read it. If you don't enjoy this one, you have no imagination whatever and should distance yourself from science fiction, fantasy, and psychology.Especially psychology.

26 of 31 people found the following review helpful. An interesting story for you Darkover fans... By Angela Rary Nobody had reviewed this book, so I thought I would. This was one of the first Darkover books I read, and I enjoyed it very much. The Darkover books seem to vary in quality from slightly interesting to absolutely fabulous, but I'd rate this one as very good. It was first written in 1962, so it's a little dated, but the main character was interesing and it gives true Darkover fans some insights into some little-explored areas of Darkovan life.

Business Analyst Technical Edge Quick Start Guide to Objects And SQL is a BA Books production (http://babooks.net).

BAbooks.net is an initiative launched to simplify the process of acquiring valuable, marketable skills—particularly in the field of business analysis.

There are many resources out there to educate oneself on valuable skills, but BAbooks.net strives to deliver products that are: - Easy to understand—in simple, plain English - Short, and to the point - Engineered for rapid personal growth and marketability

Here's what Amazon Customers are saying about some of the books released by BABooks.net… "Business Analyst Quick Start Guide is EXACTLY what I needed to get some foundation information. Other books were long and complicated, but not this one." "This book comes as a breath of fresh air and is very easy to understand."

This book is designed for I.T. Analysts at all levels—beginner, advanced, and expert, but the text is especially valuable for the following two categories of readers: - Folks that would like to get into a Business Analyst role - Business Analysts that would like to increase their skills, marketability, and pay

Many companies are no longer seeking purely functional Business Analysts (also known as BAs—"Bee Ayes"). Product Owners are becoming more valuable. The concept of interchangeable parts does not apply easily to human resources. A Product Owner has great, in-depth knowledge and expertise in communicating with developers on enterprise software that he or she "owns," or rather manages.

This book is designed to bridge the technical gap, and is engineered for speedily cultivating new skills needed to thrive in the role of Business Analyst.

A new tool will be presented in this book: Box Diagrams. While functional Business Analysts may find this tool to be very valuable, it is not the main purpose of this book.

In brief, this book focuses on documenting business objects related to business processes in a business-friendly way, and then using the resulting diagram from that exercise to generate a framework of how the data will actually be stored on the "Back-End"—the place where the application data is stored. Additionally, methods of researching the "Back-End" for specific information will be provided in order to enhance troubleshooting skills.

This volume is a part of a series—Business Analyst Briefs.

Business Analyst Technical Edge does not focus on documenting functional requirements or client interaction. Other books within the Business Analyst Briefs Series are dedicated for these purposes.

However, all books that are a part of the Business Analyst Briefs Series are designed to be independent of each other, and can be read in any order.

BABooks.net strives to give the reader all the essentials distilled, for a fast and engaging learning experience. It will benefit the reader to apply the knowledge gained, and cultivate a deeper comfort through practice and further research in the topics presented. Additional research following the completion of this book will hopefully go very smoothly due to the foundation knowledge acquired in this book.

Visit BABooks.net for complete works and product previews.

59 of 63 people found the following review helpful. No good things happen By Amazon Customer Bleak. This book starts in a bleak world where all the characters are guilt ridden, angry, and/or depressed. No good things happen, several bad things happen, there is a short gratuitous sex scene (not romance, but you're better than a rock so let's have sex, sex scene), and then the books ends in a tragedy. I don't normally write reviews, but I purchased this book because it was suggested as a great read for Ilona Andrews fans. I have to say- nope. Don't get me wrong. It is very well written, the world is well thought out, and the plot flows, but it is a very dark book, without a hint of lightheartedness or some hope it may work out in the end. I'm sure there is an audience for it, but fans of the HEA- this is probably not for you.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. What would you become to find who you are By Amazon Customer I absolutely was in love with this book from page one. I have been a fan of Reins for several years and was looking forward to a new stand alone series.Deirdre like every other being is reborn after the events of Genesis (events from The Asscention Series Book 7 "Sins of Eden" http://www.amazon.com/Sins-Eden-Ascension-Book-7-ebook/dp/B00MXEGCKS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426802111&sr=8-1&keywords=sins+of+eden).As someone who was like every other human for the the first 10 years of her life, she is not most definitely not like the rest of her kind now. She doesn't even know what her kind is since she can't shift. She has all the qualities of a shifter, even if they are a bit diluted compared to the rest of the shifters, both new and old. She just can't turn into an animal and she doesn't know why. After being promised to help her discover what her animal is she agrees to go under cover to take down the rebil group that wants to destroy the current shifter Alpha. But is she willing to go against the person she is to find her animal? The only thing I have to say negatively about the book is that it is supposed to be a stand alone series, however there are very subtle hints and some not so subtle hits to happenings from other books. I think a small companion novella or a prologue at the beginning if the book about genesis would help to explain some of the confusion without a reader needing to go through 14 someodd books to figure out what it was. As someone who has followed all the works by Reine it wasn't an issue for me, but I think there will be some confusion to newer readers.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Ugh By K.H. I really did not like this book. I found myself so upset with the ending. I was hopeful that these characters, any of them, would redeem themselves but no dice. It was hard to like many of the characters and I am sorry I wasted my time finishing the book. To top it off, it ends in a cliffhanger! I am not a fan.

Avenues into the Future...''Truth to tell, we're tourists, out to see the wonders of the universe.''--Paddy Blackthorn, The RappareeGrand journeys among the stars--pursuits, quests, explorations and encounters. These were very much science fiction and fantasy Grandmaster Jack Vance's stock in trade, whether to have Kirth Gersen roam the Oikumene and Beyond tracking down his five Demon Princes or to strand Adam Reith on far-off Tschai. Or, as in this present volume, to take Earthstyle opera to the nonhuman folk of distant Rlaru, to study the much coveted treepod dwellings on Iszm, to follow the clues in five gold bands to the knowledge that lets a handful of races control all space travel in the universe, or to endure servitude at the hands of ruthless alien overlords.Just as Vance sought adventure and the joys of a fulfilled life by travelling the highways and byways of his own beloved Earth, so he had his heroes and heroines do the same on other worlds. The five early tales featured in ''Grand Crusades: The Early Jack Vance, Volume Five'' take us on a fascinating selection of such journeys, showing us how the future was in the earlier years of his writing career. And inevitably, as with storytellers from Homer to Shakespeare, Dickens to Austen, Tolstoy to Twain, our Grandmaster also used his craft as something on which to hang personal preoccupations, fascinations and longings. For as with any good writer, the completions and payoffs of these otherworldly travels often deliver more than just a satisfactory conclusion to the affairs on hand and a few hours' pleasant diversion for the reader. Vance also put us in touch with things beyond the page, delivering an awareness of a universe and a future for humanity filled with possibility, leaving us--as the best writers, artists and makers always do--with feelings of connection with something larger.

By ralph blackburn The Early Vance Vol. 5:Grand Crusades by Jack Vance- Five exciting and inventive stories from Jack Vance.THE RAPPAREE( also published as The Five Gold Bands), is a galactic treasure hunt with nothing less than the entire universe and especially the Earth at stake.CRUSADE TO MAXUS, In a bleak future, overthrowing a harsh regime becomes a crisis.GOLD AND IRON(also published as Planet of the Damned and Slaves of the Klau)Another take on combating an alien menace and freeing mankind.THE HOUSES OF ISZM, pulp SF with an unusual pretext.SPACE OPERA, bringing music to the stars was never so fraught with danger and misunderstanding. All of these stories are, as the title suggests early works and all are novellas and some would later become novels. Yes, there is some of pulp leavings mixed within their pedigree, but that also makes these stories all the more fun to read. Most assuredly well worth the price of admission.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. 5 Novellas By Manly Reading Grand Crusades appears to be the final volume in the "Early Jack Vance" series, and it’s a departure from the previous 4 volumes, in that it contains 5 novellas in almost 500 pages as opposed to 10-12 short stories. Of those 5 novellas, only "Crusade to Maxus" is genuinely difficult to find: all of the others can be picked up in used paperbacks comparatively inexpensively (certainly, more inexpensively than buying this volume in print, for example - but that still won't get you Crusade to Maxus). All of these novellas can be classed as space operas, although one only gets there on a technicality. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of "The Rapparee", aka The Five Gold Bands. Its a nice little space adventure story, with an irritating Irish protagonist, that happens to have been written by Jack Vance. It is not, however, "Vancian" in any sense of the word - even less so than Vandals in the Void, for all that was written for a YA market. Originally this appeared in Startling Stories in 1950, which explains things to a degree: its very early Vance, and expressly written for the pulps at a cent a word. It may even have been written (or at least have a scene included) for a particular cover - go and google it after reading the story (or now, if you like).Um. Well, basically we have an Irish thief - although he may be more, its never quite clear - trying to steal the secret to (warp drive) spaceflight from the descendants of the accidental inventor thereof, who are no longer "human" due to occupying alien planets (although of human stock, they have mutated or adapted in just a few generations so as to be quite alien). Amazingly, he succeeds, only to find the secret is a riddle hidden away across the stars. So, accompanied by a feisty love-interest (oops, spoiler!) he sets off to take the secret back to Earth.Don’t worry if my plot summary makes no sense. The story itself is kind of like that too.All you get here is an action adventure mystery story set in space with aliens. No more, no less. Its not classic Vance - hell, its not classic anything - but you wont damage any brain cells reading it, and you will have a little fun - if you can stop wanting to throttle the hero.Crusade to Maxus is the shortest entry here, and the only one never reprinted anywhere. It’s a fairly bleak and muscular little piece, for all it relies on a bit of a maguffin in the end. It does raise some interesting questions about morality actually, but its hard to really cheer for anyone in particular here, other than for our hero, simply because he is our hero.Gold and Iron (aka Slaves of the Klau, aka Planet of the Damned) is an early forerunner to Big Planet or Planet of Adventure, only without all the weird settings, just the various weird cultures all clashing together. In a first-contact future, Roy Barch is abducted together with golden-girl alien love interest, duly escapes, and tries to forge a weird coalition of fellow ex-slaves into a shared goal of escape offplanet rather than mere survival in a cave. The title here refers to Barch's "iron" will - and the drive and pluck of earthmen generally - and compares it the malleability of the golden woman of the stars. Its also very bleak. To make up for all this, Houses of Iszm and Space Opera are both quite a bit lighter. Iszm combines some beautiful scene-setting in the titular tree-houses with some suitably exciting action adventure and intrigue back on Earth - but this is not a lot of the story per se. Its good but not great. Finally, only Jack Vance could write a novel called Space Opera, and get away with having it actually being about an Opera company in space. Its full of lighthearted jabs at the artistic temperament, assumptions of cultutal superiority, Opera vs "real music" (ie the kazoo, which Mr Vance himself played), and in between this is a series of picaresque adventures on a variety of worlds, some inhabited by aliens, and, in one memorable case, a prison colony with a sideline in plastic surgery. There is an almost incidental love interest, and indeed our protagonist, Roger Wool, is more in the nature of a chronicler of events than an action hero. Certainly he is no Cugel, but the structure and form of the novel otherwise has some parallels with The Eyes of the Overworld written a year or so later. This is best read purely for the amusement it provides, which is considerable, but it is a short novel not part of a wider series (or, perhaps, even the Gaean Reach milieu). There are some memorable moments, but this is not Lyonesse, or Dying Earth, Planet of Adventure, or Demon Princes. All of this is just good fun, with Vance's distinctive voice throughout, and all that should satisfy you for a few hours.

Brooks Grand Crusades - The Early Jack Vance Volume 5 (anthology - science fiction - 0671 - 01-10-2016) Jack Vance (1916-2013) was a prolific science fiction author whose many notable novels have been out of print for many years. Subterranean Press has been reprinting handsome hard bound collections of his works and in 2015 released volume 5. "Grand Crusades" includes 3 previously published novels: "Space Opera"(1965) - "House of Iszm"(1964) - "Five Gold Bands"(1963) aka "The Space Pirate"(1953) and two novelettes. A helpful editors introduction and a delightful cover illustration makes this book a worthy addition to your Vance library or a nice donation to the local public library after you have read the stories of course!

The main character is interesting, and the description is really beautiful. I've just recently started getting into steampunk, but in my heart, I'm a fantasy girl. This short story was so cool, because it combined steampunk and fantasy. I've never seen that done before! One of the creatures had the most incredible description (which is where you really see the two genres come together)... I'd say more, but I don't want to give anything away. I hope this creature will be seen again in her full novel, because it was fascinating. It made me want to learn more about both the creature and this fascinating world.I was confused at a couple parts, but I'm not sure if the author wanted to leave some things unanswered on purpose.I'm looking forward to reading more by this author!

Ms. Gregory combines fantasy history (which I love) with mystery and a bit of action. The main character is interesting, but far less so than the shadowy and tortured figure who taunts her. I'm left wondering what exactly a 'Vastian' is and why this one is important. Since this is a short story, the question is intentionally left unanswered. Fortunately, Ms. Gregory has left me entirely willing to lay out another 3$ to find out, if she ever releases a followup to this story. It does need a some of polishing (there is some tense changing and unspecific pronoun use) and contains some violently vivid imagery, but nothing bad. All in all, well worth the 3$ spent for it.

Ms. Gregory has created a short introduction to a world that is proving to be quite interesting. You are dropped in the middle of an intense situation from the first sentence, and through the remainder of the story, tension remains. Who is the young woman known as Arius? What is a Vastian? These two questions were enough for me to download the followup, Vastian Lore. I am looking forward to seeing what else Ms. Gregory has planned for this series.

Imagine you're an investor and looking at a game to invest in. This is the sort of book you'll get to see the game concept and characters. This is the guide that gives you more background information relating to the characters, zombies and game system in Resident Evil 6. It has only 96 pages though so it's not that in depth but I would say the writeup is adequate. The character parts are covered very well, but the only the main enemies are mentioned. I was expecting a an encyclopedia-like guide to each enemy. I hope they do come up with a detailed and thick Resident Evil encyclopedia in the future. The pictures included are mainly screenshots from the game. And if you've played the game, then this book is like a debrief, a summary of what happened. I'm not sure if this is worth the money for me if that's the case. I prefer the much thicker and more visually beautiful Resident Evil 6 Artworks artbook.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. pretty good. By Pol nice quality glossy paper.some nice art & info inside.and good low price.page count is pretty much what you would expect for $15YES! it's in English!!the only 2 things that made me give it 4 stars was...1. the beginning pages seemed just there to pad the book. I mean if you're a fan of RE6, you know what they're writing.they could've crammed all that into less pages. & put in more background info.2. It's 1/3 the size of the Biohazard 6 Artworks book (Japanese) but at least this one is in English right?I was lucky enough to find that one for cheap. so I guess I was spoiled by that..If you have the cash & want lots of designs & behind the scenes art& bigger & more pages, try to get Biohazard 6 Artworks. It's in Japanese but incredible art.Update: Just saw Amazon has Resident Evil 6 artworks. (English version)if you're here for the art & designs, you are better off getting that. very cool stuff in there !!& of course Amazon has is a a great price!!!This graphical Guide is an ok guide to RE6 that covers the basics of the Campaign & background of the characters.

There are better RE6 books (Story Guide has all the storyboards!) that I wish were available readily in English. It's really unfortunate because a series like this would actually sell the bigger books and I'd be willing to pay for them, as I know a number of other RE maniacs would even if only available in "premium" style packaging.

As Raine begins the training that will prepare her to carry the burdens of a world on the brink of war, Rennick struggles with his own burden—protecting the life of the sister he loves. Feeling that even Raine’s most loyal allies may be desperate to control her, Rennick must learn to master his own powerful abilities to ensure her safety. In this new fantasy series, Lee Aarons tells the epic story of Raine and Rennick Sherrill, twins bound to the fate of their world by destiny, bound to each other by more than blood. Only when they uncover the truth about their past can they truly begin to save The Four Realms from those seeking to destroy it.

The Realmwalker Chronicles: The Pillars of Natura, Volume 2, by Lee Aarons

Review Review for Volume 1: (Five Stars) Rich, Rewarding Fantasy. By Donny Swords- Author on November 27, 2014 I usually know within a few pages whether I will enjoy a read or not. The Realmwalker Chronicles: Pillars of Natura Vol 1. is one of those rare books that had the ability to catch me up and carry me along without resistance. I wanted to find out who the successor would be, and I loved the vast universe the author built, for what felt like my sole enjoyment. As is the mark of any great book, the worlds pulled me in, the richness of the characters, the importance of the plot- which revolves around who will wield the Sword of Angios and defend Erta. This novel also contains great illustrations. The artwork cements the story in a meaningful way, building instant nostalgia. It reminded me of some of those old books I loved as a kid, which had pictures worth staring at when I should have been reading. It's a nice touch, and one that is rare- to have such quality art in a well-written fantasy book of such classic quality. The last time I recall seeing something so cool was in Tom Barczak's Veil of the Dragon and S.E. Lindeberg's magnificent Dyscrasia series. I thoroughly enjoyed this element. These are magical worlds. I would recommend The Realmwalker Chronicles Vol. 1 for readers who love high fantasy, and artful prose. I plan to read them all. That's the best compliment I can give this book- that I want more, and you will too. --AmazonReview for Volume 1: (Five Stars)I would fully recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written Fantasy. By William C McDaniel on December 4, 2014 Format: Paperback Not being an avid reader makes it hard for me to read a book straight through, and if it doesn't catch my full attention right away, I'll put it down and forget about it. The Realmwalker Chronicles, by Lee Aarons caught my attention and pulled me from page-to-page, and before I knew it I finished the first volume in no time at all. It left me wanting more, so I fully intend on buying all of the next volumes. With all the information on his website, Lee Aarons gives you all the backup information about his characters, territories, and explains the 17 powers of the lani. I would fully recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written story. --Amazon

About the Author At an early age, Lee was influenced by the classics Moby Dick, Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels, and Robinson Crusoe, when his grandfather gave to him illustrated versions of these books for his 10th birthday. While he loved the new worlds and adventure that each of those novels provided, he also loved the full page illustrations that were placed periodically throughout the book. It opened these worlds of adventure for him, and ultimately become the images that form in his mind when he thinks of those novels to this day. It was reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy for the first time at the age of twelve which led him to discover his love for epic fantasy, including the works of Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, Terry Brooks, and Stephen Donaldson. He also continued to read and become influenced by a wide variety of other writers of different genres such as Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Chuck Palahniuk, and Edgar Allen Poe. Lee Aarons first conceived his ideas about The Realmwalker Chronicles in 2004 while drawing a map of a world consisting of four nearly identical continents. He remembered that a cartography professor once told him: "Maps tell a story." Looking at the map he drew, he asked himself: "What story does this map tell?" The Realmwalker Chronicles was the answer to that question. As it was his desire to make illustrations and art an important part of the reader experience within adult fiction again, he teamed up with artist Spenn to develop and create the visual elements of the series. Additionally, they, along with Lee's wife, English Instructor and writer Stephanie Mitchell, form the creative management team for Realmwalker Publishing Group. Working to not only bring their own various properties to market, they also provide creative consulting, marketing and editing services to emerging authors and artists desiring to self publish their own work. Lee Aarons currently lives in Malcolm, Nebraska.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I found this volume to be a clear step above the first, a more polished story. By James Schmidt I read Vol. 1 and was surprised by how much I liked it. So I was very excited to dive straight into Vol. 2. The continued adventures of Raine and Rennick Sherrill or should we say the Realmwalker and the Successor. We can not forget Seraph Kanias their mentor either, on this books journey to the Temple of Erta to find the legendary Sword of Angios. I found this volume to be a clear step above the first, a more polished story. The Characters in this book, as the first were fantastic. I was already able to sympathize with the twins and Kanias, and I am now fully invested in their adventure. The world building and the magic system (Lani powers) touched on in the first volume, are expanded on but I feel they are just the tip of the iceberg, and even greater things are yet to come. I am left feeling like I need to know more of this world and I hope everything is expanded on more in future volumes. Overall I have to say that the writing and pacing are taken to another level in this volume. I feel the author obviously grew more comfortable and hit his stride in telling this tale. I look forward to the next volume and cannot wait to continue Raine and Rennick's epic adventure.I was contacted by the author of this book and sent a review copy in exchange for a honest review. - mightythorjrs.wordpress.com

Protecting humans from monsters is a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. And the payment is eternally priceless. This is the Enchanted Immortals full set, books 1–4, plus the accompanying novella, BSI: Bureau of Supernatural Investigation, all in one! Book 1: Enchanted Immortals Thomas never thought he would live this long; he expected the usual lifespan of 60 to 70 years. But one terrifying night in 1946 San Francisco has changed all that; he has now been alive 86 years and still looks 20. He and his associates, Jonathan and Kathryn, have been granted Immortality by a group of sylphs belonging to the Zie Council – led by their queen, Malina – who possess an elixir called Enchantment. But what they and the rest of the Immortals have to do in order to keep receiving this elixir involves protecting sylphs and humans from the faeworlders – vampires and shapeshifters – who want nothing more than to eat, violate, and kill them. For Jonathan, Thomas, and Kathryn, policing the fae is a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. And the payment is eternally priceless. Enchanted Immortals 2: The Vortex All Jonathan Murphy ever wanted was to work hard, love his wife, raise his children, and die a peaceful death. What life dealt him is the exact opposite. In the space of a mere instant, the life he once knew – the life he wanted – is no more. In its place, he is given great strength and immortality; but it comes with strings. Strings that bind him to the sylphs and other humans, whom he must protect against those who destroyed the life he once knew – the Fae. Along with his partners, Thomas and Kathryn, he works faithfully and tirelessly enforcing the laws of the Zie to please his queens. But a time is coming where he may have to revert to his barbaric ways of dispensing justice, even if it means killing a former lover. Enchanted Immortals 3: The Vampyre What was once a simple life has turned into a very long life for vampyre Pascal Theroux. The initial loneliness, along with the obsession of not being able to walk in the sun, begins to consume him. When he and his mate, Angel, finally resign themselves to the fact that they will forever be confined by the night, they figure out a way to create a clan of sun-resistant vampires to do their dirty work for them. But is Angel really on his side anymore? As Malina and Thomas prepare for their wedding, and Kathryn and Jonathan begin to explore the possibility of becoming serious again, a new agent from the BSI shows up and delivers some disturbing news about the Portland Vampire Clan. While the Immortals, including newbie Dr. Tyler James, learn to hone in new skills and perfect their old ones, they also prepare for the trial of Seth and Malachi, who are imprisoned on the Island. The news the shapeshifters deliver during their trial, though, has the power to alter the history books. Enchanted Immortals 4: The Vixen Kathryn Jones has had a rough start in life, and as things seemed to just continue on a downward spiral, she finally decides to leave her depraved life and move to a new city for a fresh start. When tragedy strikes there, she plummets herself into her work and gets the surprise of her life when she unexpectedly meets the man who will continually take her breath away for the next hundred years. Will her rocky relationship with him last? Meanwhile in Portland, as the shapeshifters open a new nightclub, the vampires struggle to keep theirs running with all the new changes in the house. Angel has finally had enough of the young vampires, and takes matters into her own hands to realign leadership in the house. As Thomas and Malina prepare to become parents, Malina begins to fret over her upcoming mortality and disappears. Will Thomas and Jonathan find her in time? Find out in this final installment of the Enchanted Immortals series. BSI:Bureau of Supernatural Investigation Lovers of X-Files will love this accompanying

Enchanted Immortals Series Box Set: Books 1-4 plus Novella, by C.J. Pinard

About the Author I'm a California girl living in land-locked Colorado. Lover of red wine, wearer of fabulous shoes, and a die-hard Niner fan, I'm also an editor at heart. I've written over a dozen books and short stories that contain both contemporary/new adult and paranormal romance that are a little bit badass, a little heart-wrenching, and sorta funny (to me, anyway). Almost all my books usually contain law enforcement or military undertones, since strong, brave, alpha men and women are my weaknesses. When I'm not writing, I can be found working at a very strange day job, which may or may not have some mild influences on my gripping stories - so strange, in fact, I think I'll write a book about it one day. I'm also a proud member of the Romance Writers of America (RWA).

From the Back Cover

Hack your own antivirus software for an attacker's-eye look at the holes in your defense

Computer viruses are as contagious as the common cold, but they can be infinitely more destructive. Antivirus software is the best defense, but the quality of these defenses is as varied as the field itself. The Antivirus Hacker's Handbook shows you how to hack your own system's defenses to discover its weaknesses, so you can apply the appropriate extra protections to keep your network locked up tight. Authors Joxean Koret and Elias Bachaalany draw on decades of reverse-engineering expertise to teach you how to see your system the way a hacker would — highlighting vulnerabilities and showing you where the next attack is likely to occur.

You'll begin by delving into the core of your antivirus software to learn how it works and where its own vulnerabilities lie. Then you'll exploit those weak defenses to gain a hacker's-eye view of your own system as you learn to evade, attack, and exploit antivirus software to gain "unauthorized" access to your network and data. When hackers reach this stage of the game, they can install malware that accesses sensitive information, monitor what the user is doing, and steal or corrupt documents and data. When you reach this stage, you'll have a thorough understanding of the holes in your defense strategy and the knowledge you need to make them impenetrable.

Learn to:

  • Reverse-engineer your antivirus software from the inside out
  • Understand the plug-ins system and antivirus signatures
  • Work your way around antivirus measures to strengthen your network
  • Evade signatures, scanners, and heuristic engines
  • Conduct static and dynamic analyses
  • Exploit local and remote exploit techniques
  • Discover the latest antivirus trends and recommendations

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Exploiting vast majority of AV software is trivial By Daniel Bilar Preliminaries: I requested the book for review from one of the authors. I have interacted at technical security conferences with them, am cordially acquainted with both authors and I respect / like them both.TL/DR takeaway of this technical handbook for the impatient reader:1) Anti-virus (AV) software can be subverted just like any other software. Implemented security measures—if they exist at all— are much more primitive than the security measures implemented in Office suites or browsers, such as Microsoft Office or Google Chrome.2) This results in a dramatic increase in attack surface with vulnerabilities both at local and remote levels.3) Hence, AV can and often does make computers and networks less secure.Joxean and Elias posit that a lot of AV is never security audited (“That’s right: never.”) and corroborate this and other claims throughout the book. Dense at times and aimed at security researchers comfortable with standard reversing tools and python/C++, the authors intersperse easy reading with several case studies and code exploration of real life (unnamed) AV.What they demonstrate is actually quite depressing and alarming: Vast majority of AV (one or two unnamed exceptions) lack rudimentary security controls, such as those implemented in modern-ish web browsers and document readers. These includes but are not limited to• Privilege separation '• Sandboxing '• Emulation '• Default trust deny of other components'• Anti-exploitation measures inside their own products• SSL/TLS based updates• Effective use of ASLR• Effective and proper use of ACLsThe cumulative effect is a giant OR function of weakest links for the savvy reverser. Joxean reverse engineered and managed to subvert 14+ AV products (windows, *nix) in about 1-2 years time and their reversing findings make for entertaining yet grating read:There is for instance the tale of the local privilege exploit by the sad Panda AV design decision to make their folder world writeable, enabling users will ill intent to overwrite the main services and executing a malicious application with SYSTEM privileges; or Panda shield disabling / backdooring w secret UID that proved to be unnecessary in the end. Also startling: Most AV do not sign database files. For less RE inclined readers many practical, self-contained tricks like section size adjustments against ClamAV and compression bombs against Kaspersky AV will manage to keep interest high. I learned for instance that Chinese Kingsoft’s Liebao browser (among other things) installed a browser extension to take screenshots of your desktop. Caveat emptor. What makes the books especially enjoyable for those longer in the game are the little tidbits and historical anecdotes woven into the text, which repays careful reading. I must not be the only one whose nostalgia is evoked by the anti-emulation check opening c:\con device (which works from Windows 95 to Windows 8.1 but not emulators), or the description of Symantec’s debugger-interdicted GSM VM which forced developers to invent their own debugging techniques, or when discussing old code in AV engines they identify AV vulnerabilities affecting detections for the metamorphic innovation Zmist/Mistfall.Many tools and other works are referenced in the text, but most inexplicably w/o URLs such as Joxean’s own Diaphora (I found something new and useful in the open source SAGE-like egas from the MoTool suite). There are a couple of typos and editing snafus (Wiley eds: it’s Waleed Assar, name is correct in URL not in text; double text on p.71). In my opinion, some illustrations, highlighting of important info and a glossary would have enhanced the book.Addendum as rejoinder to previous commenters: The content is very current (at least April 2015, may be as current as July 2015); as can be gleaned from TLS inspection, Kaspersky’s MiTM and FREAK attack exposure possibility text. The reason why ‘old’ vulnerabilities are shown is likely twofold: 1) as illustrative device to present general AV product audit mechanism for the evergreen design and implementation mistakes and 2) to quote p.294“Often, the security researchers are under the threat of being sued if they publish details about the vulnerabilities, even when they’re already fixed. This happened many times to me and to other researchers.”This type of adversarial attitude is in stark contrast to the positive community acknowledgements sprinkled throughout the book (eg Ange Albertini, The Grugq, Nguyen Anh Quynh and many others). Worth emulating, properly :) .

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent practical RE guide beyond AV By Scott Piper The book explains AV from both sides (the AV developer and the attacker) helping to explain why and how. @matalaz (Joxean) has done a lot of work attacking AV. Having @0xeb (Elias) help out, who was one of the creators of EMET, likely helps give that defender perspective. Both are former Hex-Rays (maker of IDA Pro) employees, so they are awesome reversers, and both are developers, so the code (python) you see in the book is clean. The writing is personable and enjoyable to read, like a mentor teaching a topic they love. It reads much like "Practical Reverse Engineering" (which Elias also helped write) and is a great combination with that, so from one you learn how to reverse in general, and from this you can see specifically how to reverse a class of products and apply that knowledge to doing vuln research on them. The book describes all of the components of AV, from file scanning, to it's update mechanism, to touching briefly on things like browser plugins. The authors have extensive knowledge of this class of products and so comments about many different AV products are sprinkled throughout. This is an excellent practical guide to reverse engineering in general, that just happens to have AV as the common theme. It assumes some RE knowledge with IDA Pro, but beyond that everything else is free, open-source tools, with some (Diaphora and BCCF) written by Joxean. It uses every technique available to reverse products, such as investigating versions for different OSs which may have more symbols. It shows how to set up frameworks to run the AV's core scanner, which can help with not only fuzzing, but also is an important generic RE skill for using or testing a product's features. It is a practical guide to vuln research and shows how to investigate many areas of an attack surface. The focus is on file format fuzzing (as that is the biggest attack surface of AVs) but it also discusses permission and logical issues for escalation of privileges, MiTM attacks on the updates, and evasion tactics. My biggest concern with the book is that no versions or hashes or files being reversed are mentioned, and no download archive specific to the book appears to be available, so in time (now?) it won't be possible to play along with some of the reversing sessions and use the framework bindings. The concepts and material stand on their own, but it'd be nice to see an archive of these files appear on the Internet somewhere.

12 of 16 people found the following review helpful. This book is a mixture of BS and correct technical points. By Amazon Customer The BS:The book makes a very strong case of AVs being s*** in quality and full of vulnerabilities. In order to prove the point the authors dig up old vulnerabilities from an entire industry covering 40 vendors and starting from 2006!Most of the vulnerabilities listed in the book are from 2010-2013.And then the authors claim that modern PDF readers and office software are better written and more reliable.Come on, if one would investigate 40 different office software, for sure there would be a ton of exploitable vulnerabilities. The good:The book does give a well deserved kick in the pants for vendors who have outdated security practices. All modern code should be ASLR+DEP enabled, and all permissions should be verified enough to that they are correct.Instructions how to bypass AV signatures is kinda outdated, producing unique binaries will make you shine like a beacon in any modern product. That being said, if you use product without reputation cloud support you'd better enable it or switch products.Same with behavioral bypass, sure if you do your tests in a lab without internet connection you can hide, but in real environment you are painting yourself as a target. The part of how to find vulnerabilities in AV code is up to date and valid, almost every product contains obsolete functions last touched in 2008.Despite the inaccuracies, this book is a must read for every AV developer and development manager. There is no excuse to repeat any mistakes listed in this book.
