The Nothing: A Book of the Between, by Kerry Schafer

About the Author Kerry Schafer writes fantasy with its teeth sunk into reality, mystery that delves into the paranormal, and women s fiction that embraces the dark and twisty realms of humanity. The first two books of her Between trilogy (Between and Wakeworld) were published through Ace Books/Penguin. Due to the ever-shifting landscape of publishing, the concluding book of the trilogy - The Nothing - will be coming out as an Indie book, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Review originally appeared on http://booksthathook.comI absolutely loved this book! It was skillfully written, fast-paced, and extremely suspenseful. From the very first page, the reader can see how bad things are. All of the worlds have been damaged; people and creatures are dying. The stakes are very high for Vivian and her friends.I can’t think of another book off-hand where a character had so many lives and deaths to feel responsible for, and Vivian handles the pressure commendably. She doesn’t wallow in guilt for her failures or snap under all the responsibility. She trudges on despite the difficulty and grief. The Nothing picks up right where Wakeworld left off. This is definitely a series that needs to be read in order. I’m sad that this was the last book.Vivian and Zee (and others) go right from one dangerous, fantastical situation to the next. I had no problem suspending disbelief because Shafer makes everything so detailed and realistic. She is a highly creative author. Some elements in this book felt like twisted versions of other stories such as the fable of the wolf in sheep’s clothing, the nothing from The Neverending Story, and the wizard in The Wizard of Oz, and perhaps a little of The Matrix. If you have read this book, you probably know what I am talking about. Some people might see this as copying, but I didn’t. More than one person can have the same idea. Plus, these things are only vaguely reminiscent. They are in no way identical. I liked that bit of familiarity.I loved how the women in the book were strong and could defend themselves, and how the men were strong but not overly bossy.I also appreciated the multiple points-of-view because the reader needed to know things going on in other locations at the same time. It helps the reader see how truly unstable the worlds are.I was confused in one part because I didn’t understand why Isobel didn’t count as Vivian’s “blood of her blood” or “flesh of her flesh.” This wasn’t that big of a deal to me. It doesn’t affect my overall impression of the book. For some readers, there might be too much death in the story. While I was saddened at the deaths, it made me understand how truly dire the situation was for everyone. The romance was developed naturally, allowing the characters to work through their differences and love one another for who they truly were. They had to come to terms with themselves and with one another, accepting the bad with the good. When they finally made love, it was perfect. I thought it was handled very tastefully. The Nothing is now one of my favorite urban fantasy books. It leans more toward fantasy because a lot of the story takes place in worlds that are not our own. If you like a lot of danger, some romance, and well-built fantasy worlds, I recommend reading The Between series by Kerry Schafer. It is definitely a series I would read again and again.

That would been a sad, sad thing. Thanks to everyone who helped Kerry Schafer bring this book into being. Out of The Nothing, so to speak. Kind of fitting in a way that this book should be born the way it was then, I guess. If you haven't read the rest of the series, go do that. Then pick up a copy of The Nothing. It was awesome and everything I hoped it would be.And now I'm kinda sad it's over. =o\BTW, since the gov't goons say so, I have to tell you that I consider Kerry Schafer a friend of mine, but she didn't give me this book. I paid for it. And she didn't ask me to even write a review, let alone a good one. The good review is strictly for the awesome story. I wouldn't play it any other way.

This entire trilogy is fantastic but the final installment is unbridled, free, and totally enveloping. Something absolutely changed for the better where author Kerry Schafer is concerned. This is not to say that I didn't utterly enjoy the other two books; The Between was captivating and Wakeworld left me wanting more but The Nothing stands as a different book all together. With some very lovely phrases turned and never a dull moment. . . Kerry is unfettered. Read all three and love them all, but nothing can prepare you for The Nothing! ;)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Another winner from Dirk Patton. 5 stars! By Sapphyrez Another great installment! Patton's writing seems to be getting better. He even takes a few shots at himself over some of the issues some reviewers have with him, like ending every book on cliff hanger. There's a line at the very beginning where he narrates:"like a poorly ended movie or TV series that leaves the fate of some poor bastard to whatever the audience imagines by just cutting to black."Good stuff :)As far as the story goes, we are introduced to a new character, Joe, who is a virologist and has devised an idea to combat the infection. The females are evolving and getting much smarter. The virus or the inoculation the military administered is having a new effect on the living: they are becoming stronger and faster like the female infected. The action is fast paced and unrelenting as usual. John Chase leaves a trail of destruction wherever he goes up to the climactic finish with the final defense at Tinker air force base. The story does end on a cliff hanger but one not nearly as egregious as book 6. I was satisfied with the ending and this series has now become my second favorite right behind Sam Sisavath's Purge of Babylon series (which you must read if you haven't started yet!) Thank you Dirk Patton.Final thoughts:There's about a paragraph's worth where Patton narrates from the viewpoint of Dog. I thought it was a nice touch and hope to see more of that in future installments. Everyone loves of Dog :) And Rachel, poor Rachel. The day she dreaded has finally come and she must now face a possible future without Chase by her side. I don't know how it will all play out but I hope something good comes for Rachel. I like Katie but when the majority of the story has been Rachel and John, it's hard to let go.

Several hours of freedom from the realities of life. Now anybody reading the V Plague series knows Mr Patton always leaves you hanging, and guess what, more of the same.Welcome to a new character by the name of Joe, hopefully he will become more important as the series grows, so back to book 7, we have a wild chase at the beginning of the story, then a scary bit where John has to save his wife, and just to cap it all off, a massive battle at Tinker base. The whole story just keeps getting better, but you are a bugger Mr Patton for that last paragraph.Looking forward to book eight, nine, ten and so on.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fast-paced, thrill a minute ride! By Kate Fisher The problem with a continuing series is that, more often than not, after the first book things tend to go downhill. Oh, how blissfully happy I am that I've never had to worry about that with the VP series. What I love about this series are the twists and turns, the battles, the conflict between characters, the constant desire to fight, survive, overcome and persevere and of course, Dog.I love that Mr. Patton explains the military jargon in his novels as well, even though I'm well versed in military acronyms and codes, having 3 brothers and a significant other serving in the armed forces for the better part of the last decade, it's still nice that he explains them. And what I also love about the VP series, it's not full of heavy petting and sex. THANK YOU MR. PATTON. If I wanted to read erotica I'd blow my money on 50 Shades of Gray. Pun intended. I've noticed men who write apocalypse novels fill their pages with blood, weapons, and war; while women who write them seem more concerned with finding love in the apocalypse, then the female protagonist gets pregnant and blah blah blah, however, I digress. Now I'll tell you what I don't like about this series. ...the fact that I can't seem to to read and complete the newest installment in more than one sitting. Time seems to stand still when I read Mr. Patton's work, until I reach the inevitable cliffhanger and realize it's 4 AM and I have to be at work by 8. But it's definitely worth it.Its easy for an author to produce a novel that's so engrossing it captures the rapt attention of his readers in the beginning, but rarely can an author hold said attention for 7 books.Mr. Patton has found his niche, and as much as I would like to see a happy ending for John, Katie, Rachel, Dog and Joe, I almost don't want this series to end because it gives me something to look forward to."Indestrctible" will grab you by the lapels and refuse to let you go, escape from reality and go on an adventure across unknown territory on horseback, descend into caverns filled with the stuff nightmares are made of, and feel your heart ache for characters you will begin to think of as your family.I can guarantee you, for as long as Dirk Patton is writing, I will be reading.

By FreedbyJC Like chefs, authors take the simplest of ingredients and present you with a sumptuous feast; full of delicacies, exotic treats and uncommon spices. Once again Chris's Vale has served up a dish that you'll be telling others about for years. Old friends, New foes, a few "what the heck just happened" moments and the tale continues. Loves sweetest kiss, royalty's darkest betrayal and evil's triumphant win revealed as it's greatest loss. Awesome moments in the life of a reader of the Dracengard saga abound. Keep them coming Chris, our mouths are watering for the next course.I received a free copy as an appetizer but it was so good I bought the full meal deal...again.

Book four offers up a dark Lord and his Queen, she is sweet on the outside, but pure evil resides in her heart. Deceit and the quest for power have free reign in the kingdom, but the true heirs to the thrones of the realm know they have to stop the threat. Christopher Vale continues to draw the reader into a story about the strength of family and the fight that is necessary to keep it from falling prey to the dark.

Terrwyn, Dillan, Ashleen, and Willem have been training for months growing with their dragons and learning to fly with them. Erec and Taite barely escape from the drakmere and Black Knight when they attack the camp in the forest. Aura safely flies them to Greynault Castle where they figure out a strategy to retake Avonvale. Free download

There was romance, suspense, intrigue, a little BDSM, some menage, love lost, and love found again. The two heroes and two heroines (two separate couples, the men are friends) are all great in different ways. The werewolf culture is really neat, with ancient customs in a modern world. My favorite is the Master's lady--I love when they are mated. I just about had a heart attack when it went wrong.I love that it turned out the other lady really was just a good person being forced to act against her own wishes by her evil brother. I really, really liked how that worked out.The great thing about these stories are that each one is wonderful by itself, but together they make a larger story that works, too.You may have purchased and read these stories before, as they were previously released separately.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great collection of stories By Ian K. I have only read Interzone a few times in the past. Perhaps this should change. This issue of Interzone is a collection of wonderful stories. I bought the issue for Alistair Reynolds' story A Murmuration. I also discovered a fantastic story by Fadzlishah Johanabas (Songbird). In addition to publishing established writers like Alistair Reynolds, Interzone seems to be keeping alive the tradition of publishing very promising up-and-coming writeres like Johanabas. Now that Interzone is available as a Kindle publication it is both reasonably priced and accessible. If you enjoy science fiction stories, I think that you'll enjoy this issue of Interzone.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another First-Class Collection of Stories By Charcoal Chicken A first-class collection of stories from this under-appreciated UK magazine. The stories are original, fresh, and - in some cases - beautifully written. I've had subscriptions to Asimov's and other of the very top US-magazines, and Interzone consistently throws up better batches of stories. To be blunt, some of the US magazines read quite stale in comparison. In this issue of Interzone the stories by Alastair Reynolds (A Murmuration) and Tendai Huchu (The Worshipful Company of Milliners) are exceptional.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. epansion is not always a good thing. By bluewynd could not finish this book. the First one started off great, but half way though started adding layers, book two is just more layers. What I mean is the story starts in a horse and buggy small nation, expands to neighboring nations, expands to other lands and magic, and then to ultra modern lands. and left you after a battle--with none of the questions answered. as to who is Finder? Why is the poison moving over the landBook two just continue this expansion and non answers. we are now into wizards, and vampires, and other planets. With "finder" still the one who is supposedly going to fix all this. one of the problems with these expansions of view is that its all the same, a teenage (boy or girl) helping father make decisions, or offering advice. characters are 2 dimensional, that is good or really bad, and no explanation as to their motives other than money or power, no insights. this book should have been labeled under teen books. its just not worth reading more of, hooked my curiosity for first book, but lack of information and expanding worlds just bored me.

Convoluted but excellent ideas By Kindle Customer This story is a continuation of First Ordinance.. however even 50% through this 2nd book we don't know what that ordinance is... We continue Finder's (Quinn) story, and the glass city, and modern city are reintroduced and mainstays. The real problem, is that suddenly there are other planets, vampires werewolves, aliens galore, villains who are never fully explained- all just merrily interspersed within the "original" story without enough introductions and information. While I was able to follow the story, I had 3 MAIN issues. A) I didn't care much about the (many, many) tiny bits of aliens, vampires, planets, characters because they seemed random and weren't well explained or introduced leading to my lack of interest. B) It seemed the author was randomly exercising revisionist world building that should have happened in book one- which was a little random but nothing like the dozens of new cultures and species we just go random bits of here and there, sometimes just a few sentences then we're whisked off to something else often completely unrelated. It felt to me the reader, just interruptions to the story. C) I feel that the."New world/character-building WAS important.. just a hindrance in its presentation. Perhaps this should be book 3, or at the very least a novella in between in which to fit the author's additions to the environment/characters/races/planets which seemed to have found a place in her story after she published the first book.Yes, I want to know "Finder's story" & will keep reading.. but, as I write this review at 58% through- it's an interesting chore... emphasis on chore. I plan to read the rest and book 3, but I'm tired, and wish for my aforementioned idea of a novella as an intercession between books 1&2 instead of these tedious interruptions.Suitable for YA and above, but extremely hard to follow due to author's writing style for the average reader.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Now I gotta wait.... By Reader I Love Connie Suttle!! I read Finder#2 in 7hrs. Suttle sure knows how to write a book. I really enjoyed having some of the older peps (Lissa, Reah...) show up with the new. The connections are great.Finder is an interesting story about a unique girl with a lot of knowledge and power but very little understanding about how special and strong she is and what she could do. I love that this book takes you further in to their world and answers a lot of questions, for me, but also left me with more new questions :). And the Ending......Now to go from my Connie Suttle fix to having withdrawals because I HAVE TO WAIT SO LONG FOR THE NEXT BOOK :) guess I just have to start back with the first book in lissas series and work my way up. Again :)

Thrust into a reality that should be myth, Honor does what she has to do to survive. Some things are easy to say goodbye to. Others things, like her very being, are not so easy to let go of. And when she does, what then? What will she become? As Honor fights to remain unaltered when everything around her, including her, has been, she is met with adversaries and champions. Ryder, Christian, Nealon—they all have a goal. Only Honor doesn’t know if their goals coincide with hers, or Superior August’s and the UDK society. One thing she does know: the world isn’t big enough for all of them.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Honor has many facets to her personality By Maribel @ Platypire Reviews Unremarkable takes place six months after the end of Ordinary, and we see Honor waking up and being fed a bunch of **** by Superior Augustus.I want to discuss him a little bit. He's psycho, and I usually try to find a tiny bit of good in all the villains of the books I read, but I haven't been able to find one single redeeming quality in him. And I don't want to either because I thoroughly hate him now. As other's have said, he has a Dr. Frankenstein complex, but in an even more evil and exaggerated form. I'm hoping book 3 provides us with a little more background as to how he became the way he is.Christian is no longer the same character we read about in book 1. After all he has been through, I can't say I blame him, even though I don't like the thoughts he is having in regards to Honor. Ryder's character development is something I have enjoyed seeing, as he seems to be maturing and leaving cowardness behind. Honor has many facets to her personality, and she sort of has a hero complex she struggles with. She cares about others, maybe too much. That is her flaw, and coupled with her morals and principles, it makes it very easy for Augustus to control her and manipulate her to do whatever he pleases. This books was not in the least predictable to me because I've never read anything like this. Oh, I've certainly read many books in the Dystopian category, but none are quite like this. I found this book easy to read and there weren't any errors that blatantly stood out to me. It was anything but dull, and had a storyline that makes me want to continue with book 3, which is the final in the trilogy. It was just missing a certain spark, and I hope I find that in the final book.Unremarkable gets 4 Platypires.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Extraordinary! By Unavailable It's taken me longer than normal to come up with a review for this book because I simply couldn't find the words that described it for me. What I loved about this book the most I think was the attention to the plot. It reminds me of the old tv shows and movies where they didn't need special effects, they just relied on pure plot and little details to make it amazing. It's classic that way.I didn't expect what I got with this book. The synopsis doesn't do it justice… I honestly don't think any synopsis could. I was drawn in from the first word until the last word. This story starts off when Honor wakes up and discovers she has been unconscious for the last six months and held by Superior August. Now is has been rescued and is on the run from the UDKs. Something about her has changed, she must figure out what these changes are and what they mean. This story follows Honor, Christian, Ryder, and Nealon and their individual journeys towards the same goal. This book is beautifully written, not just in the amazing plot, but the style and editing as well.If you love a good story with twists and turns and appreciate top notch editing and writing you will enjoy this book.I want to know who this woman's editor is, because they rock! I've come to expect a certain amount of errors in ebooks, from indie authors to the classic lit books, it just happens. I didn't notice any. (I'm not saying there wasn't any errors, just that if there are they are so few and far between that it was unnoticeable to me.) The work between the author and the editor(s?) and everyone in-between was some of the best I've seen since I bought my first ebook.Forgive the cheesiness of this line but this book really is anything but unremarkable!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another amazing book from Lindy Zart! By Kendra Gaither This is a fantastic continuation of the Ordinary series. So much happens that is completely unexpected (to me anyway), some pretty amazing, and some completely heartbreaking! We follow Honor as she is forced to kill and accept the evil that is injected into her, an see a new side of Ryder. So much happens, and it's impossible to tell how good it is without giving away spoilers! You won't be disappointed!

By Donnie I've been trying to figure out how to monetize my blog for the past few months. In that time, I've spent more than I'd like to admit on other digital books promising that inside would be some secret formula for success. What I've learned however, is that there is no such thing as a secret formula and that the only factor that really matters is hard work. But the problem that I was having was a fairly basic one. I didn't know what areas to start focusing on and get down and dirty with my learning. There is TOO much information out there on this topic, much of which is repetitive and filled with fluff. In the year or so I've been at this, I've actually started turning a small profit for for my blog. Although it's really nothing to write home about, I'm proud that my online blog is paying me anything as opposed to me paying it.I am still learning and look to new books and resources to further develop my online marketing skills and techniques. This book is an awesome reference for me to do just that. Many would consider it a bit short, but trust me, it's huge on quality information. It took me a year to piece together on my own, the information tightly packed inside this book.Awesome resource! Great for the beginner and experienced alike! Save yourself from wasting a year on junk information as I did, and give this book a read!

Worth it but it is a big blog post By Kindle Customer It was valuable content delivered well and I'll be checking this guys site out for future content and announcements. But at the end of the book in the summary he forgot to tweak the verbiage that eludes to the fact that this was an article, which leaves the impression that he cherry picked the article from his blog and made it a book. I didn't spend anything on it (free promo? I forgot. Maybe it was free) so I'm not upset at that, nor do I want my time back. I do appreciate the value. It's just that when people recycle their content, I think it's important to make those extra efforts so that it doesn't have that "regift" feel. Ya know, that gift someone gives you that was a really just a gift they got from someone but didn't like it, so they repurpose it with a smile. Like that. This book was a fruitcake that tasted good, but a regift nonetheless. I feel bad leaving this review. I notice this phenomenon often with kindle books (repurposed content). I suppose I'm leaving it because I like the book (authors voice) and there wasn't an email handy for me to toss him a quick shout out for feedback. So, there ya go. Longest. Review. Ever. - The End

Starting a blog this way will take far more than one hour By Deb Kastner I think this small book might help someone who has no idea what they want to do and are just at the beginning of blogging, but even then, I didn't find the answers I sought as to how to monetize my blog. I felt it was a shot in the dark as to how make a specific kind of blog, selling a specific kind of service. It's one thing to find a niche, but I think it ought to be something that matters to you or readers will see right through it. The part about finding the right keywords seemed both confusing and time-consuming. Thus I think the title of the book--how to start a profitable blog in under one hour, is very misleading. There are some good nuggets in here that may make it worth reading, but I personally am looking elsewhere. I received this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion.

In Detail

The demand for smart wearable technologies is becoming more popular day by day. The Arduino platform was developed keeping wearables, such as watches that track your location or shoes that count the miles you've run, in mind. It is basically an open-source physical computing platform based on a simple microcontroller board and a development environment in which you create the software for the board. If you're interested in designing and creating your own wearables, this is an excellent platform for you.

This book provides you with the skills and understanding to create your own wearable projects. The book covers different prototyping boards which are compatible with the Arduino platform and are suitable for creating wearable projects. Each chapter of the book covers a project in which knowledge and skills are introduced gradually, making the book suitable for all kinds of readers.

You begin your journey with understanding electronic components, including LEDs and sensors, to get yourself up to scratch and comfortable with different components. You will then gain hands-on experience by creating your very first wearable project, a pair of interactive bike gloves that help you cycle at night. This is followed by a project making your own funky LED glasses and a cool GPS watch. You'll also delve into other projects including creating your own keyless doorlock, wearable NFC tags, a fitness-tracking device, and a WiFi-enabled spark board. The final project is a compilation of the previous concepts used where you make your own smart watch with fitness tracking, internet-based notifications, GPS, and of course time telling.

Style and approach

This is a project-based book that introduces each project to the reader step-by-step. Each project starts out by covering all the components individually, and then explains how to combine them into interactive objects. Each project contains an easy-to-follow guide to design and implement the electronics into wearable objects.

By talking Heads I was a technical reviewer for this book and reading it at its full version now I can guarantee it is a great resource. During my first experiments with Arduino I had to face a lot of the stages that are analytically explained in the chapters of this book. With a little more experience now I can use this guide to advance my skills and challenge myself for more complicated systems. Moreover, this excellent guide can eliminate the frustration often experienced when playing around with tangibles and Arduino. It enhances your creativity to think beyond the technical limitations and explore the overall functionality and design of the final product. It describes all the steps from introducing the components, to resources, to programming with Arduino IDE, to soldering the connections and creating the case for the product in an uncomplicated language.I think this book is for every maker soul out there!Enjoy!

Excellent starting point for prototyping wearable electronics By Andreas Göransson Tony has a way of explaining very technical things (like electronics) without having to dive too deep into the technical nature of the components. This book provides a solid introduction to building your own wearable electronics from a designers perspective using several different tools, platforms, and frameworks - each with their own strengths which Tony highlights in every chapter. Having read this book you will have all the means to creating your very own wearable prototypes using almost any kind of sensors and actuators.
