WINNER, Short Story Collection of the Year, THIS IS HORRORContains the BRAM STOKER AWARD-nominated story "Sing Me Your Scars"In her first collection of short fiction, Damien Angelica Walters weaves her lyrical voice through suffering and sorrow, teasing out the truth and discovering hope.Sometimes a thread pulled through the flesh is all that holds you together. Sometimes the blade of a knife or the point of a nail is the only way you know you're real. When pain becomes art and a quarter is buried deep within you, all you want is to be seen, to have value, to be loved. But love can be fragile, folded into an origami elephant while you disappear, carried on the musical notes that build a bridge, or woven into an illusion so real, so perfect that you can fool yourself for a little while. Paper crumples, bridges fall, and illusions come to an end. Then you must pick up the pieces, stitch yourself back together, and shed your fear, because that is when you find out what you are truly made of and lift your voice, that is when you Sing Me Your Scars.Blurbs:"Sing Me Your Scars revolves in the mind's eye in a kaleidoscope of darkness and wonder."--Laird Barron, author of The Croning and The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All"Damien Angelica Walters writes prose as sharp as a scalpel. With surgical precision, she slices through her characters' veneers to lay bare the secret scars underneath, the knots of fear and desire twisting them. The women and men in these stories struggle against their own, oddly-beautiful damage, and even when they succumb to it, the narrative is never less than compelling. Anatomist of dreams and nightmares, Walters is a writer to watch."--John Langan, author of The Wide, Carnivorous Sky and Other Monstrous Geographies Cover art and design: Angela McDermott and Juliana M. Hernandez.

Sing Me Your Scars (Apex Voices Book 3), by Damien Angelica Walters

Review "Like the best horror fiction, this collection is at once subversive and invested in the peculiar delights of the genre. The result is a full-body experience, packed with gasps and shivers, pulse-pounding jolts and moments of intense instinctive recoil -- shocking, yes, but completely enthralling and oddly uplifting as well."-Helen Marshall, The Los Angeles Review of Books"Love, loss, and the mutable, yet ineluctable, truth of identity are the bedrock, the steely spine of Sing Me Your Scars. The stories comprise a mirror, shattered to 20-odd bits and reassembled and bound within a frame. Each jagged sliver reflects some distortion of the viewer, each shard bends and traps light and pierces the eye, perhaps the soul, with an isolated wound, but step back and back and a kaleidoscopic effect takes hold. Behold a powerful, important statement writ in the weird."-Laird Barron, Locus Magazine"I've read some wonderful pieces of fiction over the years, hundreds and hundreds of fantastic stories that I've loved in their own way. But this is something special, something just at a level above all that."-Paul M. Feeney, Ginger Nuts of Horror"...Sing Me Your Scars by Damien Angelica Walters is a sharp treatise on the subject of human pain, in all its forms, and what comes after. Underlying the physical torments endured by Walters' protagonists are believable emotional horrors with which most readers will relate. Realistic tragedies - loss of love, proxy wars in a messy divorce, parental disinterest, the loss of a relative to Alzheimer's - are placed side-by-side with more bizarre tribulations, such as the gradual vanishing of a lover's body, impossible anatomical experimentations, and Inquisitorial ordeals inflicted on wielders of magic."-Christopher Burke, Weird Fiction Review"Sing Me Your Scars is a gripping collection of short stories that provides a number of deeply-felt chills without relying on the crutches of common horror clichés and tropes. ...Damien Angelica Walters focuses less on the boogeymen in the shadows and more on inner demons like doubt, insecurity, and dependance. Don't get me wrong - this is no mundane collection of inner monologues; we've got a snake-headed woman you might recognize from Mythology 101, and a robot model of Henry VIII that lives with a stripper, and women who can sing buildings into existence, and many more such wondrous creations. But every single story, no matter how outlandish the window dressing may seem, is grounded in the very real foibles and frailties of human existence....Walters is a writer that seems prepared to be around for the long haul, and horror fiction as a whole is likely to benefit greatly from her talents."-Blu Gilliand, The October Country"I haven't felt this way about a collection of short stories since I read Thomas Ligotti's Songs of a Dead Dreamer. Walters's collection of short stories is haunting, creepy, and beautiful. The author makes mundane terrors seems otherworldly, and the otherworldly seems strangely familiar."-The Dunwich Review"Walters creates a lush fantasy world in which the reader becomes quickly immersed despite the limited word count of these stories. I am in awe of this author's ability to achieve so much in so few words."-Suzanne van Rooyen, South African Speculative Fiction Review"If you have not read any of Walters' work then this collection of short stories is an excellent place to start. Even if you have read some of the stories in other publications, it is worth getting this collection for the eight new stories. 'Sing Me Your Scars' by itself is reason enough to part with some money and treat yourself."-Andy Whitaker, SFCrowsnest"...creepy, weird, heartbreaking, and lovely."-Sarah Richardson, Women Write About Comics

Sing Me Your Scars is filled with anger, pain, frustration, terror and despair that is presented to the reader in a way that is both delicate and powerful. There are stories in this collection that require immediate re-reading. "Grey in the Gauge of His Storm" is the most thoughtful and realistic story of abuse and women's inability to escape that I have ever encountered. The fabric metaphor is stunning."Girl With Coin" perfectly reflected my own mother's complicity in changing my capacity for feeling. Walters leaves the reader wondering how the coin will land and what will happen next. I know how my coin landed and I hoped that Olivia would have the same outcome. Some things can never be forgiven.Every story in this collection resonated with me on some level. This is a collection that I will read again and again because my own experience is in more than one of her stories. It is stunningly beautiful.

Each part has it's own voice, and each voice has it's own way of expressing what it is made of. These stories are built from pain and damage, healing and magic. Desolation gives way to the promise of light, while dark abilities are used for positive reconstruction. The characters in this book are striving to be whole. But before they can reach their goal, they must search within themselves so that they can say - to borrow a quote from the book - "This is who I really am." The pain and darkness between the pages are sewn together with bright strands of redeeming beauty. This book begs to be read more than once.I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review.

A Sybaritic Symphony of Stories By Carina Bissett The day I stumbled upon the gorgeous prose of Damien Angelica Walters was a happy accident – one that has had a profound impact on me as both a reader and a writer. The first story I read by this warm-hearted woman was “Grey in the Gauge of His Storm,” originally published by Apex Magazine and included in the third part of Walters' short story collection debut "Sing Me Your Scars." With the first paragraph, this lyrical story hit me hard.“Pattern: Every lining has a cloud, be it a worn spot, a mended seam, or an unraveled thread. They are neither perfect nor impenetrable, no matter how much we wish it so. People will tell you that damage makes the fabric stronger. It depends on the damage.”Finally, I had discovered a piece of fiction I could put in front of people who didn’t understand the complexities of domestic violence. It was written with such beautiful speculative components that a story of horror and violence became something more than the condition it described. And through reading it, especially as a survivor, it transformed this tricky subject into something that transcends the concepts of victim and violence.Walters has been in this business for several years now and she continues to quietly push boundaries and reshape the world of speculative fiction with each story she writes. I purchased "Sing Me Your Scars" as soon as it came out and I’ve read it, cover to cover, three times now. Each time through, I find something new, something worth sharing. There are several pieces in the collection that I can find a direct relationship with – the yearning for a mother’s approval in “Girl, With Coin,” the self-blame entangled with the desire for vengeance in “Scarred,” the fear of the violence that comes on the heels of beauty in “Always, They Whisper,” and the regret of lost relationships in “Dysphonia in D Minor.”Other pieces needle the edges of other emotions, tugging on loose thoughts and fears as she stitches the reader into unfamiliar skins. Stories including the title piece “Sing Me your Scars” and “Glass Boxes and Clockwork Gods” remind us of the will to survive through the tragic and traumatic experiences that reshape our lives. “Melancholia in Bloom” and “Paper Thin Roses of Maybe” draw on the desire to be remembered and the fear of loss. And “Shall I Whisper to You of Moonlight, of Sorrow, of Pieces of Us?” and “Like Origami in Water” contemplate the empty spaces left behind. All in all, "Sing Me Your Scars" is a sybaritic symphony of stories – a collection which will draw you into its depths time and time again. Highly recommended.

A Second Chance (The Chronicles of St. Mary's), by Jodi Taylor

About the Author Jodi Taylor, International Woman of Mystery, spent some time working undercover for North Yorkshire County Library Service. Heavily disguised as the world's most incompetent Facilities Manager she shifted dead dogs, fell out of mobile libraries, and spent far too much time in the gents' toilets. The idea to re-write history first came to her while studying history A’level at an evening class. Just One Damned Thing is her first novel and was originally self-published as an ebook where it was downloaded by more than 60,000 readers on Amazon.

By FuldaRussell When I wrote a review for the first book, Just One Damned Thing After Another, I observed that just when you think things can't possibly get more gut wrenching, they do. When I wrote my review for the second book, A Symphony of Echoes, I remarked how it was interspersed with several I-did-not-see-THAT-coming moments. In this one, all of the above, including more than one moment, Ms. Taylor, that I really, really hated you. Oh. My. Word. What a freaking brilliant book. Just how are you going to top this one, hmmmm?

By janthree I just finished reading all three volumes of the The Chronicles of St. Mary's series and have very mixed emotions about the books. Normally, when reviewing a book, I like to write a short intro to the plot, but for this series, it is difficult to provide enough detail to benefit potential readers without spoiling the narrative. So I will forgo any plot points and focus on issues I had with the story. Time travel stories tend to span the spectrum from hard science to fantasy. Unfortunately, almost all have to ignore a range of paradoxes to maintain the logical structure of the narrative. Generally, hard science time travel has the fewest paradox issues. The concept of infinite timelines is probably the most logical of the time travel plots. You change something in the past and you create or shift to another timeline. The more fantasy oriented stories tend to ignore all the time travel paradoxes and usually revert to magic as the explanation.Jodi Taylor is a good descriptive writer. Her words fill out detailed imagery of the places our protagonist, Max, visits. I especially enjoyed her description of several historic events that were witnessed by the time travel team. However, in my opinion, the story falls short in other areas. First off, the tone of the story is all over the place. One page it is a comedy, the next it is a romance, the next it is violent horror, the next it is a macho military mission, etc. I understand that sometimes authors juxtapose narrative tones to strengthen the story, but there is no sense of purpose to this jumble of "genre" changes. It is almost as if the author sat down one day and wanted to write some comedy, then the next day she decided to write a romance, the next day she wanted to write a monster story, etc. Accordingly, in all this confusion, her character development suffers. I never really knew how the characters would react to a situation. Which is fine when I initially met them in the first few pages of volume 1, but by the time I had finished volume 3, not knowing and understanding the characters became a problem. At the end, I really didn't much care what happened to Max.A second area I found problematic is in the time travel logic of the story. The author steamrolls over one paradox after another without offering any explanation. I am very willing to "suspend my disbelief" if an author lays down some consistent ground rules for the world that he or she has created and sticks to them. Unfortunately, the logical gaps in this series were so pronounced that my mind kept being pulled out of the narrative flow. For instance, how can you drop a rock hut into a city alley without anyone noticing? If a hut suddenly appeared on a street out of nowhere, you can be certain the neighbors would immediately notice and raise an alarm. Why not use a cloaking device? Another example...why are the scientists getting permanently killed in the timeline? You would think that any time someone is injured or killed, St. Mary's would spend a couple of months organizing a rescue party, go back in time to ten minutes before they died and rescue them. Based on the St. Mary's world logic, there should be no deaths from time travel. These are just a couple of examples of many logic/plot holes in the story.Overall, the author is in her element when writing about historic events...the descriptive writing is very good. On the other hand, the time travel plot is filled with logic holes that are just too annoying to really enjoy the narrative flow.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The third book in the series takes a left turn... By Robert P. von Fischbach Oh well, just as I had gotten very intrigued with the characters and continuing, ever twisting/interesting story lines, the author takes us into blind alleys, and, Pleeeeease, not that old plot!Dissapointed...The visit to Troy gets dumb and dumber, the trip to Agincourt becomes a bit sketchy after the opening maneuvers, the twang of the Brit archers is there, but the French 'elan becomes truly mud-bound! As well the death/no, they're still alive in another plane of existence.., leads us to a rather muddled ending...with a sharp hang-nail, screatch of chalk on the blackboard, [Thanks Sister Cornelius], As I closed the book, I really felt a bit let down.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good action...interesting characters By Catherine Mackay I would have loved to have given this more stars as it was a pretty good story. Unfortunately it was riddled with proof-reading errors, lacked any breaks between pov changes and somewhat spoiled my enjoyment. That was the bad bits, now the good bits. Children of Darkness was fast-paced and entertaining with some interesting characters - Marcus definitely reminded me a little of Han Solo, a loveable rogue with his heart in the right place. The characters are well developed - the author gives us some hints around Marcus' and Solomon's back-story and I hope we get a little bit more in future books. The dialogue is snappy, with a distinctive sense of humour to it. The basic premise is: Earth Force has been doing some dodgy dealing with the Omni Corporation that has resulted in experimentation on a stone-age group of aliens on a distant planet. Unfortunately for Earth Force some one finds out and.......cue our heroes, Marcus and Solomon find themselves in the thick of things, evading would-be assassins and Earth Force minions in order to find the necessary proof to bring to the Council (a forum of alien species and of which Earth is a part of). Overall, aside from the formatting and proof-reading errors, an entertaining read.

It deserves more readership. Good development of world view and characters. Could use some re-editing to eliminate frequent misuse of words such as brake for break, etc. Looking forward to reading the second book of the three book series.

I like stories about people, and I particularly enjoy it when these people are engaged in adventures with aliens, spies, artificial intelligence, romance, and battles in space. But then again, who doesn’t? Crystal Deception is a science fiction thriller that includes everything from my list above, and this work, Crystal Horizon, is a prequel to that book. I wrote this short piece with two thoughts in mind. One was to give new readers a low cost opportunity to sample the larger story and meet a couple of characters from the series. Perhaps you’ll enjoy yourself so much, you’ll want to read the full length books? My second reason was to give current fans the backstory on Sid and Cheryl. This prequel takes place five years before the time of Crystal Deception, where we meet Cheryl as a captain of a military space cruiser and Sid as a covert warrior for the Defense Specialists Agency. We learn in Crystal Deception that Sid and Cheryl have a shared history and, in particular, a romantic relationship that has somehow gone awry. In this prequel, we join them on the day they first meet and we experience that history with them. I hope you have as much fun reading this mini-adventure as I did writing it. Enjoy! Doug J. Cooper came out with the prequel, Crystal Horizon, I knew I had to read it, too!Synopsis (from the author): Crystal Deception is a science fiction thriller that includes everything from my list above, and this work, Crystal Horizon, is a prequel to that book.I wrote this short piece with two thoughts in mind. What I liked: As mentioned above, Sid and Cheryl are two of the main characters throughout the books. In the later books, Sid is the fearless operative in a shadowy organization and Cheryl is working her way up the military chain of command, but you’ll get no spoilers from me on the later books. We do find out in the sequels that Cheryl and Sid have a history and Crystal Horizon gives a great backstory, and details how they met and the start of their relationship. For fans of the series, it is a satisfying completion. For those who haven’t read any of the books, it is a great introduction! What I didn’t like: The only disappointment I had with the book was the relationship between Sid and Cheryl was a bit predictable. Other than that, good stuff!Overall impression: Well-written, with a good introduction to the characters, Crystal Horizon was a quick, interesting, and entertaining sci-fi read. If you haven’t read the series, read this one first and then go enjoy the other two! Well done, Doug J. Cooper! My rating: 5 Stars

It does not delve into a basic plot with a climactic resolution. However, this is really just an introductory prelude to the well-written sci-fi fantasy, Crystal Deception, which is being presented by the author as a taste to readers to interest them in the main saga. For readers like me, who have read Crystal Deception, this is a quick read that provides a flashback to the initial meet and personal connection between two of the major characters before an unexpected action separated them. This prologue does give readers new to the author’s writing a feeling of easy connection to the main characters and a quick sense of action and adventure that will expand in the main novel. Whether one reads it before or after Crystal Deception, this quickie is a fine addendum to the opening book of the saga.

Cooper wrote Crystal Horizon: A Short Prequel to Crystal Deception to backfill how the characters of Crystal Series met and to allow readers to sample the longer works. Mr. Cooper succeeds in creating characters and a world that I want to know more about. What will to happen Sid and Cheryl? Will the artificial intelligence, Crystal save mankind or work against it? What catastrophe awaits Earth and how will these characters resolve the conflicts that await them with the Kardish, the alien spacecraft orbiting Earth? As a teaser, this short book succeeds.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. It was first published on 14 October 1892, though the individual stories had been serialised in The Strand Magazine between June 1891 and July 1892. The stories are not in chronological order, and the only characters common to all twelve are Holmes and Dr. Watson. As with all but four of the Sherlock Holmes stories, those contained within The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes are told by a first-person narrative from the point of view of Dr. Watson. In general the stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes identify, and try to correct, social injustices. Holmes is portrayed as offering a new, fairer sense of justice. The stories were well received, and boosted the subscriptions figures of The Strand Magazine, prompting Doyle to be able to demand more money for his next set of stories. The first story, "A Scandal in Bohemia", includes the character of Irene Adler, who, despite being featured only within this one story by Doyle, is a prominent character in modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations, generally as a love interest for Holmes. Doyle included four of the twelve stories from this collection in his twelve favourite Sherlock Holmes stories, picking "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" as his overall favourite. Arthur Conan Doyle began writing while studying medicine at university in the late 1870s, and had his first short story, "The Mystery of Sasassa Valley", published in September 1879. Eight years later, A Study in Scarlet, Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes story, was published by Ward Lock & Co. The novel was well received, but Doyle was paid little for it, and despite a sequel novel, The Sign of the Four, also being published by Ward Lock, he shifted his focus to short stories. In early 1891, the first editor of The Strand Magazine, Herbert Greenhough Smith, received two submissions from Doyle for the newly established magazine. He later described his reaction; "I at once realised that here was the greatest short story writer since Edgar Allan Poe." The first of these, "A Scandal in Bohemia" was published near the back of The Strand Magazine in July 1891. The stories proved popular, helping to boost the circulation of the magazine, and Doyle received 30 guineas for each short story in the initial run of twelve. These first twelve stories were published monthly from July 1891 until June 1892, and then were collected together and published as a book, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes on 14 October 1892 by George Newnes, the publisher of The Strand Magazine. The initial print run of the book was for 10,000 copies in the United Kingdom, and a further 4,500 copies in the United States, which were published by Harper Brothers the following day.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: 15 Illustrations Included (Unabridged Version), by Arthur Conan Doyle

Amazon.com Review This volume, authorized by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's estate, contains all 4 full-length novels and all 56 short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes. At over a thousand pages, the weighty tome is a perfect gift for budding amateur sleuths, and it is an ideal companion for a long stay on a desert island (or a leisurely trip through the English countryside). As the reader wades past the tense introductions of A Study in Scarlet and moves towards such classic tales as The Hound of the Baskervilles, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," and "The Final Problem," she is sure to draw her own conclusions about Holmes's veiled past and his quirky relationship with his "Boswell," Watson. Doyle never revealed much about Holmes's early life, but the joy of reading the complete Holmes is assembling the trivia of each story into something like a portrait of the detective and his creator. By the end of the long journey through London and across Europe (with a long stopover at Reichenbach Falls), one is apt to have found a friend for life. --Patrick O'Kelley

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up-Four short stories of mystery and intrigue by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are performed radio theater style by the St. Charles Players: "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," "The Adventure of the Dancing Men," "A Scandal in Bohemia," and "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot." The narration is acceptable, although some characters sound flat and their British accent is too obviously forced. However, this detracts little from the overall entertainment value of the stories. The overall aural quality could be improved; a slight hissing can be heard throughout the narration. Though at times Holmes comes across as haughty, listeners become caught up in learning how he ingeniously solves the cases using clues that Watson, the other investigators, and most listeners miss. Fine for individual or group listening, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes could be used for entertainment or for a unit on the mystery genre in English classes. The lack of strong female characters in these stories may warrant including alternate classic mysteries with strong women, such as Simon Brett's Mrs. Pargeter, Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, Heron Carvic's Miss Seeton, or Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax. A nice feature of this package is that each short story is completed with one cassette. Unless you have a great demand for classic mysteries, this audiobook is an additional purchase.Sarah Smith, Harrison Community Library, MICopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Doyle's modesty of language conceals a profound tolerance of the human complexity . . . No wonder, then, if the pairing of Holmes and Watson has triggered more imitators than any other duo in literature."  —John Le Carré, author, The Constant Gardener"Arthur Conan Doyle is unique in . . . ushering in a genre of writing that, while imitated and expanded, has never been surpassed."  —Stephen Fry

I enjoy the pictures of daily life...the maid bringing in lunch to Holmes on a pre-arranged schedule, passing the street vendors and beggars, imagining the opium den frequented by addicts, vivid descriptions of period clothing, transportation and commerce slipped seamlessly into the tales. I read this often to refresh the imagery in my mind.

Her powers sealed by the council in charge of policing witches, she is expected to turn to madness and die. Except they don't know she has the witches hammer bound to her permanently and has access to the forbidden Arcane. It's power is destructive and as she fights to contain to she also fights the fever that precludes her turning into a Lycan, thanks to a bite from the local Alpha. She's on a deadline to find a missing Lycan and her unborn child. If she fails, she will become one and the mate of the Alpha. If she wins, Cryws is by her side, fighting for her, and promises to tell her what he is at last. But things never go as expected when it comes to Samantha. When 17-year-old Autumn Oaken and her twin brother Luke find their parents brutally murdered, they are soon summoned by their grandfather who lives not in another city, but in another world called the Underground—home to all magical creatures seeking refuge from humankind. The twins journey into the Underground, discovering that they are not only elves, but “royals” and that their bloodline is in danger of extinction at the hands of their parents' murderer, Vyra Vaun. Living in a skyscraper tree called Arbor Castle, the twins seek to join the Warriors, a group of elves who fight to defend the kingdom and to stop Vyra and her malevolent followers. But Autumn soon becomes distracted, locked in an elfin love triangle with forbidden, golden-haired Avery and brooding, green-eyed Victor, who has a dark secret. She realizes she must make a choice. Little does she know her decision could very well mean the difference between life and death for all of the Underground.

Oaken (The Underground Series Book 1), by Melody Robinette

About the Author I write in coffee shops. I edit in coffee shops. I live in coffee shops. Why, hello there! I am Melody Robinette, a 26 year old writer who is married to an amazingly handsome man and has two super fat cats. I've been writing since the age of 15, getting my start on The Sims games. I would take screen shots in the game and write a scene to go with it. Then I came up with my first book and started writing that, but my computer deleted it and I gave up... BUT THEN I started back up in my early 20's and never stopped. :) Primarily I write YA and NA, dabbling in a variety of genres including: Contemporary/Urban Fantasy, Dystopian, Paranormal Fantasy, LGBT, and Commercial Fiction. In my non-writing life, I am an English/Special Education teacher. When I taught 12th grade English, I had the great pleasure of sharing some of my work with my students, and their enthusiasm for my books is what encouraged me to seek publication.

By ellen When I read first novels by any author, I tend to read with slightly lowered expectations than I have of authors who have an established publishing record. This author blew all my expectations out of the water! The language is engaging, inviting the reader into the Underground. The author describes vividly, creating a scene without bogging the reader down with unnecessarily intricate details. She gives just enough - we can picture what she shows us, use our imagination for more, and move on to the action taking place in the scene. Mrs. Robinette is a talented author who knows how to find the right balance to keep the reader engaged from start to finish. I found this book eminently readable, which is higher praise than it may sound! But what I think I enjoy most about this book was simply how fun it is to read! The author captures the personalities of her characters and develops them individually, which is not only a talent but it creates for the reader a relationship with her people. I do not have time to sit and read in one setting, but I found myself thinking about the characters during my work day - something I rarely do! She allowed me the opportunity to make new friends, for which I am grateful. I plan to introduce them to my students as well, and may create a unit based upon this book or series of books! The second book cannot be released soon enough for me!

It has an interesting and dynamic cast of characters, that I'm sure will grow and change through the series. The plot is full of twists and turns that you don't see coming. It is really worth reading and appeals to a broad audience. Enjoy it!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The best book I've read all year! By Cassie L. Oaken will take you on a magical adventure that will you never want to come away from. Melody Robinette's dangerously addictive writing style will hook you, and string you along to the very end of the story. At the end, you will be left feeling like you were thrown back into your own life, but leave you wishing you could dive back into the world this author has created. In this book lies a world that crosses the boundaries between the surface, and the Underground. It follows a cast of characters you can't help but connect with, and root for the whole way through. You follow the many triumphs and failures of the main characters, Autumn and Luke, as they discover their true abilities in this new realm. As a reader, you'll truly feel the emotions of all characters involved. I'm not afraid to say there were moments when I was so nervous my palms were sweaty, or when I was laughing out loud and smiling (despite the weird looks I received in real life), or that my heart ached for the characters.I felt transported to a new, magical world in a way that I haven't been able to experience since Harry Potter (seriously!). The connection Autumn forms with Avery is not unlike the unbreakable bond experienced in K.F. Breene's Chosen. Those were my two favorite series (and will always be), but Oaken is now joining them atop my favorites list.To Meldoy Robinette: you may be my new favorite author. Thank you for creating new worlds for readers to explore, and please, for everyone's sake, never stop writing!I'll be diving into the second book in the series, Ash, as soon as I finish this post. I'm not ready to lose this new-found sense of wonder, as my hope is once again renewed that one day, maybe I can have some sort of magic of my own, I just need to explore enough to find it.

Articulating Design Decisions: Communicate with Stakeholders, Keep Your Sanity, and Deliver the Best User Experience, by Tom Greever

Review Christian Manzella, VP of UX & Design at Moz "It's too easy for designers to fall into vernacular and unintentionally obscure what they're really trying to say. Tom's book creates an easy-to-use and wonderful framework for communicating design in plain language, increasing the likelihood that stakeholders will understand what you're presenting."Tim O'Reilly, Founder and CEO, O'Reilly Media "Articulating Design Decisions by Tom Greever will change the way designers talk about design. Get it, read it." twitter.com/timoreilly/status/655137807669702656Aaron Irizarry, Director of UX at Nasdaq & author of Discussing Design"Tom has done a great job tackling one of the more difficult aspects of design... taking to others who aren't designers and sharing the how and why of the design decisions that you made."Richard Banfield, CEO of Fresh Tilled Soil and author of Design Leadership"While most books on design mention these communication issues as a sidebar or a footnote, Tom gives us an entire book of tried and tested tools to make designers expert communicators. True to its title it is easy to read and even easier to recommend. As the principle of a UX design firm I'm thrilled that Tom has given us this gem of a book."

A must addition to any designer's toolkit By Adriana De La Cuadra As designers we know designing should be an iterative process and this book delves into teaching how to navigate this process by improving your communication skills. I specially liked the idea of keeping in mind the human side of the design practice: we are not only designing for human, we are also humans creating the designs. Therefore we need to truly connect with the people that will make possible those designs. This connection is what can enable us to work as a team and produce the best user experiences.Plus the book is a joy to read as it combines great story telling and practical advice. Highly recommended!

It's approachable and casual while maintaining an intelligent and authoritative air, which is exactly the kind of thing Tom is encouraging all designers (or anyone interacting with stakeholders really) to do.ADD goes from personal anecdote, to practical advice, and back. This makes the reading interesting, the information helpful, and the ways to apply his experiences and subsequent take-aways to your own life/career a straightforward process. The information Tom provides in this book feels so obvious and intuitive. Yet while reading it, I found myself realising I was only practicing half or so of the techniques he suggests, despite years of experience working with a wide range of clients. The things I did already know and do mindfully, I found validating to see someone else express in a published book. A great way to shore up some confidence, and build upon that foundation.Overall, this is a great book. It's easy to read. It's not about the nitty-gritty of technical design process. It's a higher-level book that discusses concepts and techniques that will help you be a better person and a better designer to work with. After all, no one works in a vacuum (except vacuum repairmen and astronauts).

I keep two physical copies in the house and one next to the seat of my car. Of course, I also keep the digital version with me in my Kindle app and even purchased a PDF version from O'Reilly to use on my iPad Pro so I can write in the margins all of the inspirational thoughts induced by reading the book. I even make it a point to read every footnote, highlighting the ones that really stand out to me, for better understanding of the context. I find that when I don't read even just a couple of paragraphs of this book each day I fall into the temptations of not articulating my design decisions as well, or even at all. As an amateur designer turned developer, I feel like it has helped me to not only better communicate with stakeholders in projects in which I'm involved, but also has given me methods, vocabulary, and a better angle for speaking with designers.

On a summer night like any other, an emergency call sounds in the quarters of Andira Tal, Lancer of Alsea. The news is shocking: not only is there other intelligent life in the universe, but it’s landing on the planet right now. Tal leads the first responding team and ends up rescuing aliens who have a frightening story to tell. They protected Alsea from a terrible fate—but the reprieve is only temporary. Captain Ekatya Serrado of the Fleet ship Caphenon serves the Protectorate, a confederation of worlds with a common political philosophy. She has just sacrificed her ship to save Alsea, yet political maneuvering may mean she did it all for nothing. Alsea is now a prize to be bought and sold by galactic forces far more powerful than a tiny backwater planet. But Lancer Tal is not one to accept a fate imposed by aliens, and she’ll do whatever it takes to save her world.

Review "The Caphenon excels with meticulous and believable world-building, and combines it with a touch of space opera replete with epic fights for survival." -Curve MagazineThe tale DeLancey weaves in this book is astoundingly fascinating. Not only does she stitch together a completely original universe equipped with detailed histories and lore for each of its inhabitants, but her deeply creative plot gripped me to the core. -The Rainbow Hub

An intricately plotted saga that makes for compulsive reading By Lisa Shaw This might be Fletcher DeLancey’s debut novel, but she is certainly no stranger to the art of the epic. Having honed her narrative talents to a fine edge on the five-book Past Imperfect series, she has now left the path of Star Trek fan fiction and gone boldly forth into a world entirely of her own creation in the Chronicles of Alsea. For thousands of generations, Alseans have looked up at the sky and wondered whether they were alone in the universe. The answer comes crashing to the ground one night in the form of the Gaian starship Caphenon, which brings with it a small cadre of humans who have been watching their planet for cycles and are eager to make friends. But right behind the Caphenon comes the first wave of a malevolent invading force that has also been watching—and it is ruthless, implacable, and ferociously armed. The only hope of saving Alsea from imminent annihilation is an alliance with the Gaians, and neither side is certain the other can be trusted. While the Gaians have mastered the technology of traveling through outer space, the Alseans have mastered the techniques of traveling through the inner space of the heart and the mind. This unique gift not only makes them a target but also may prove to be their only weapon against the invading aliens who seek to enslave them all. The Alsean leader, Lancer Andira Tal, will do anything she has to do to save her people and her world, including betray her new friends if it comes to that. The Caphenon’s Captain Ekatya Serrado, stranded with her broken ship and manipulated by distant political forces beyond her control, is forced to choose between following her orders and following her heart, knowing that either choice will bring unendurable losses. When everything they value most is threatened, these two powerful women are pushed to the limits of their honor, their integrity and their courage.DeLancey is a confident, capable story teller who knows exactly where this intricately plotted saga is going at every single step. Her characters, like her stories, are complex and richly drawn, and she is adept at providing exposition in carefully measured doses with surprising twists that make for almost compulsive reading. Her crisp, streamlined writing style moves the action along smoothly, and she is as careful with the details of Alsea’s religion, history, biology and chronology as she is with the science of space travel and physics, the violent ballet of physical combat, and the delicate byways of human emotions and relationships. Her main characters—many of whom are women of title and rank—are powerful, confident leaders who may be hard-nosed and occasionally hard-headed, but are almost never hard-hearted. Their intelligence, integrity, and loyalty to both their ideals and their loved ones make them easy to admire and impossible to forget. You don’t have to be a sci-fi fan to appreciate this story, which offers combat action, danger, romance, humor, political intrigue and vivid world building that will make you want to return to Alsea again and again.

Fletcher has a wonderful way of inveigling her characters into your heart and mind almost without you noticing. You become invested in them and the events that shape them, both past and present. This novel and its subsequent sisters do not have, and will not have, as a prerequisite, any allegiances to a particular genre...eg, LGBT, SciFi, or fantasy. The Chronicles of Alsea stand firmly on the content of its characters and plot lines. The creation of the World of Alsea; it's culture, history, traditions and even its way of telling time, are cleverly woven and feel utterly believable from the start. Also within its plot lines are issues concerning moral and ethical decisions, explored, made and justified .Psychology is one of Fletcher's great strengths and in this story, the reader is asked to stand in the shoes of those facing huge crises of faith and morality...and so not being able to judge on face value.....I do not, as a reviewer, ever reveal plots or include any spoilers...much as I would like to laud and honour the great and good in this story...So I simply say...in short...buy it...read it...love it...and wait for the next part impatiently!!!

I have read and reread her Star Trek Voyager and Chronicles of Alsea internet versions so many times that I almost have them memorized. Having said that, I'm going to admit, with great shame, that I almost quit halfway through this book. The basic story was fine, magnificent. But these were not my beloved Captain, anthropologist and Lancer. I was absolutely furious. I was honestly heartbroken. I still am a little bit. But, that's the mark of a an extraoridinary author. No, a storyteller. Ms. DeLancey showed me that I, too, am sonsales and artfully showed me the beauty of this familiar yet enirely new incarnation of world of Alsea by peeling back the superficial layers and diving into the literal heart of the matter. Very, very well done. I'll be rereading this one many times. Once I took off my mental blocks with regard to the characters, I laughed, I cried, I got anxious and I shouted at my screen when things got really tense. That's what makes an author a storyteller. And Ms. DeLancey is a storyteller. Anyone who has even a small interest in science fiction will love this book. Even if you don't have any interest in science fiction, read this book. It is extremely well written and will take you on the journey of a lifetime: heart, mind and body. Thank you, Ms. DeLancey.
