"I want more of this stuff to read." Travis Mohrman, author of Down the Path. THE ANNIHILATION OF FOREVERLAND When kids awake on an island, they’re told there was an accident. Before they can go home, they will visit Foreverland, an alternate reality that will heal their minds. FOREVERLAND IS DEAD Six teenage girls wake with no memories. One of them is in a brick mansion, her blonde hair as shiny as her shoes. The others are in a cabin, their names tagged to the inside of their pants. Their heads, shaved. Slashes mark the cabin wall like someone has been counting. Hundreds of them. ASHES OF FOREVERLAND Tyler Ballard was in prison when his son created a dreamworld called Foreverland, a place so boundless and spellbinding that no one ever wanted to leave. Or did. Now his son is dead, his wife is comatose and Tyler is still imprisoned. But he planned it that way. INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR HOW IMPORTANT ARE NAMES TO YOU IN THIS BOOK. DID YOU CHOOSE THEM BASED ON SOUND OR MEANING? Almost all of my books have names with special meaning, some foreshadowing a big twist. In The Annihilation of Foreverland, Reed’s name was symbolic of his ability to tolerate suffering, bending in the face of gale forces but never breaking. WHERE DOES YOUR TOMORROW SPRING FROM? IN OTHER WORDS, HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE CRAZY WORLD? Sometimes, I can’t remember how the story started by the time I get to the end. The Annihilation of Foreverland started with the premise of identity. I wanted to write it as a YA book in the science fiction dystopia genre in a way that slowly unfolded as well as questioned who we are and explore our fear of death, and what we’re willing to do to avoid it. Like all of my stories, it does have a romantic angle mixed into the action. Because it should. GIVE YOUR BOOK THE BECHDEL TEST. IT HAS TO HAVE AT LEAST TWO (NAMED) WOMEN IN IT WHO TALK TO EACH OTHER ABOUT SOMETHING BESIDES A MAN. I failed because there’s only one female in The Annihilation of Foreverland. However, the young adult sequel (Foreverland is Dead) passes with flying colors since its mostly female characters that rarely talk about men. WHAT SORT OF BODY COUNT ARE WE TALKING HERE? The bodies die, but not necessarily the characters. Chew on that a second. DO YOU WANT YOUR TOMORROW TO MAKE IT BIG, AS IN JK ROWLINGS-BIG? WHY OR WHY NOT? Believe it or not, no. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to make enough cash to pay off this house and send my kids to college, but I’ll pass on fame and fortune. Anonymity is a blessing. YOU CAST YOUR CHARACTERS FOR A MOVIE. WHO MAKES IT? In The Annihilation of Foreverland, I only casted two characters in my head while I was writing it. The Director is Jeff Bridges and Mr. Jones is Anthony Hopkins. It was like watching a movie as I wrote. HAVE YOU WRITTEN IN ANY OTHER GENRES BESIDES YA DYSTOPIAN? WHAT DREW YOU TO YOU THIS GENRE? I’ve been fascinated by consciousness, identity and what this all means since I was young. I would read my grandfather’s science fiction books with elements of artificial intelligence and alternate realities and wonder what happened when they died? I suppose that’s why all of my writing deals with the big mysteries of life in one way or another. In a way, I write for my own exploration, in a sort of thought experiment approach, pulling apart our identities, exploring what makes us who we are. If I lost my memories, would I still be me? If I had my body parts replaced with synthetic replications, at what point would I not be me? Do I even need a body? What am I? A few years ago, I figured I’d write a romance novel. Since all of my books have a romantic element, I thought it would be fun. Halfway through the novel, I found myself thinking more and more about the next project—a dystopian idea. So 40,000 words in, I scrapped the romance novel and got back to what I love. Science fiction.

I had already bought the first book when I saw the trilogy. I wasn't aware that it was just the first of three books in the same story. Same but different. It's a continuation of the Virtual Reality created in ForeverLand, and continued in ForeverLand is Dead and finally completed in Ashes. Of the three books, Ashes is my favorite. I had a lot of questions after each of the first two books. Who were the kids that lived and what happened to the ones who didn't. Ashes tied up loose ends for me. I found the bad guys and the good guys and how, sometimes, it was hard to tell the difference. Maybe Science was the bad guy. And the good guy. Would it be better to control Science? Who gets to be the controller? Who watches the Watchman? These are questions that you will have to answer after you read the books. The answers don't come easy. But we wouldn't want it any other way. Is life in Virtual Reality real? If it feels real, it must be real. Maybe. Another great read by Bertauski. Not my first and hopefully, never my last.

Frankly, I'm kind of jealous that folks today can just pick them all up and read them all in a row. Mark some days off your calendar because this story will suck you in.This is one of those incredibly unique science fiction stories that is loaded with twists and turns that you won't see coming.I won't write a full synopsis because I couldn't do it without revealing spoilers, so instead I will just say that book one is about the boys island, book two is about the girls island, and book three merges the two story lines into one wickedly devious finale.Pick up this box, clear your schedule, and settle into your most comfortable chair. You will love this series of books.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. but I liked the books very much By Terry Ellis I am not a young adult by any means, but I liked the books very much. Some critics say it was predictable but I would beg to differ. The second book really took me off guard with its final twist. I thought the characters could have been flesh out just a tad more. Very different storyline. Kind of reminded me of the Matrix buy yet it was very different. I have recommended these books to my friends and I hope they will take the time to read them. Get the book, give it a chance for a couple of hours, if it doesn't captivate your attention, bid it farewell and good a future.

The Gift of the Magi (Richard Foster Classics), by O. Henry

From Publishers Weekly O. Henry's classic tale of Della and Jim, the struggling newlyweds so anxious to give each other a Christmas gift that each sells the one thing the other holds most dear, receives an oddly lifeless treatment here. Heyer's meticulously detailed illustrations are pretty but stilted; the characters look like mannequins. The rueful Jim fares better than poor prematurely middle-aged Della, who at times looks more like his mother than his wife. Still, the story is as touching as ever, and neither time nor mediocre artwork can dim its glory. All ages. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up–An illustrated, unabridged version of the classic short story in which a young husband and wife each, unbeknownst to the other, gives up a most treasured possession to buy the other a wonderful gift. The gifts, of course, are useless as a result, but the couple's love is presumably all the stronger. The sepia-toned watercolors have an authentic period look; the details present in the New York City street scenes and the couple's rather shabby apartment add a strong feeling of time and place to the story. Very different in style from Lisbeth Zwerger's lovely and delicate version (S & S, 2006), this is a fine choice for libraries needing another illustrated edition of this Christmas tale.–Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist Gr. 5 and up. A classic story becomes a picture book for older readers in this oversize edition. Heyer's paintings reflect the turn-of-the-century setting and are nicely executed, if occasionally stiff. Because the protagonists are both adults, there will not be automatic appeal for younger children, but preteens, and especially teenagers, should find the romantic appeal that has been apparent to previous generations of readers. In the story, it is Christmastime, and we meet the two main characters, a young married couple who have each other and very little else, except the husband's (Jim's) heirloom pocketwatch and the wife's (Della's) hair. In a despirate attempt to provide a worthy present for her beloved husband, Della sells her knee-length hair to buy a gold chain for the pocketwatch. Little does she know, Jim has done something just as extreme for her. This is an inspiring tale that, despite its simplicity, speaks volumes about the sacrifices we willingly make for those we truly love.

Riego I picked up this book out of nice-cover curiosity and for some light reading to my 2nd grade CCD class, and instead of finding simple children's Christmas book I found a literary masterpiece. Lizabeth Zewerger has transformed O. Henry's very mature adult short story about social poverty and vicarious giving into a children's tale about the true meaning of Christmas. I was awed by the delicateness of Zewerger's watercolors and amazed by the way she perfectly expressed each emotion of O. Henry's tale.In a world where every holiday (especially Christmas) has been commercialized this book is a symbol of the true meaning of giving. Before you get lost in the hustle and bustle (or if you unfortunately already have) do yourself and your loved ones a favor and pick up this book. It's a great gift for children of all ages and adults too. This is a gift from the heart to give at Christmas.Reconnect and STAY connected!

Beautiful, but Incomplete By A Customer This is a classic Christmas story in our family and is linked to many Christmas traditions; however, I was disappointed in this copy because of its "editing." Many parts of the original story were missing for no apparent reason. I did, however, find the illistrations lovely and would recommend this book for that reason.

CAN THE WIZARD OF RHYME SOLVE A ROYAL CRIME? There's little love lost between the kindly monarchs of Merovence and the scheming sovereigns of Bretanglia. But when the brutish Prince Gaheris - heir apparent to the Bretanglian throne - is murdered during a brawl in a Merovence tavern, any pretense of civility between the two kingdoms flies out the window faster than the mysterious brigand who committed the dastardly deed. While the outraged king and queen of Bretanglia declare their intention to lay siege to Merovence, royal wizard Matthew Mantrell suspects the slain prince was done in by one of his own "loyal" subjects. As both sides gird for battle, Matt sets out - with trusty dragon in tow - to catch the killer. But the road to royal justice is rocky indeed, and a powerful sorcerer, a sinister cult of false druids, and a mischievous spirit are just some of the obstacles Matt must conquer - by wit or wizardry - to save his enchanted land from unholy forces of darkness . . .

About the Author Christopher Stasheff spent his early childhood in Mount Vernon, New York, but spent the rest of his formative years in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has always had difficulty distinguishing fantasy from reality and has tried to compromise by teaching college. When teaching proved too real, he gave it up in favor of writing full-time. He tends to pre-script his life but doesn't understand why other people can't get their lines right.

I like "historical" fantasy, and this is a fun little romp through an alternative England and Ireland (Bretanglia and Erin). While not as detailed and intricate as some other "historical" fantasy authors (such as Guy Gavriel Kay), this is a well written and entertaining book, with a firm emphasis on adventure and action, with plenty of political manoeuvering and backstabbing, chivalry, magic, and good vs. evil to keep anyone satisfied. The plot in this book is somewhat predictable at times, such as the virtuous Prince who was "killed" but comes back from the dead to claim his throne from his evil brother, with the help of the good guys of course; and who killed the initial heir to the throne of Bretanglia became fairly obvious to me early on in the book. These gripes aside, I still enjoyed this book, and I recommend anyone who has enjoyed previous books from this series to read this one. However, this may not be the best book to read if you haven't read any of the other books in this series, as you may not understand all the background information that this book is refering to (in other words, read the first book, Her Majesty's Wizard, and all the sequels in order, before you read this one -- trust me, its worth it). The good thing about all the books in this series, including this one, is that each one has a distinct ending, and does not leave you hanging until the next one.All in all, this book is a good continuation to a fun and entertaining series, and I am eagerly awaiting the next one!

By DC In the Haunted Wizard,Stasheff spins an artful yarn that weaves several eras of English history[ in this universe anyway] into a merry old jaunt thru Bretanglia. For fans of the play and movie "The Lion in Winter", this book captures the wonderful scheming and backbiting of an ambitious royal family in medieval Europe. The use of Celtic and Druidic rituals and magic fits in wonderfully with the premise for this series. Matt Mantrell,The Lord Wizard, continues to keep one entertained in this book with his integrity, mastery of wizardry and his abilty to land on his feet. Other titles I would recommend would be Tad Williams' Dragonbone Chair;Stephen R. Donaldson's A Man rides Through;Margret Weis' The Lost King

Dastardly Villains Don't Carry the Day By Paul Camp Christopher Stasheff's _The Haunted Wizard_ (2000) is the sixth entry in his _Wizard in Rhyme_ fantasy series. This time around, the novel features two particularly odious central villains-- a false druid and a mad pretender to the throne of Bretanglia-- who think nothing about sacrificing dozens of virgins and slaughtering hundreds of peasants and torturing various bystanders along the way. Moreover, they require their followers to break _all_ of the Ten Commandments! It is impossible not to boo and hiss such dastards and to hope that they get their Just Desserts sooner rather than later. But readers expecting a novel as light or breezy as some of the earlier novels in the series are bound to be disappointed. This novel is darker, more violent... but not more literate or sophisticated._Haunted_ is, I suppose, a competently told fantasy adventure. The rival kingdoms of Bretanglia and Merovance in the parallel magical universe are once again at odds with one another. Bretanglia (roughly the same as our Britain) is medievalistic, pagan, and ruled mostly by a set of villainous scoundrels. Merivance (roughly the same as our Gaul) is progressive, Christian, and ruled by mostly heroic leaders who use white magic. The crown prince of Bretanglia visits Merovance, promptly stirs up a tavern brawl, and gets himself murdered. The rulers of Bretanglia loudly blame Merovians for the crime. But Matthew Mantrell, royal wizard of Merovance and husband to Queen Alisande, suspects that the murder was actually a put-up job by the prince's own subjects.Much of the subsequent action involves Matt's adventures in Bretanglia with his dragon friend Stegoman to solve the mystery and Set Things Right. His life is greatly complicated by a creature called Buckeye, a bauchan who delights in spreading anarchy right and left, a cult of villanous pseudo-druids, and the rightful heir to the throne-- noble, chivalric, but not too bright. There are a satisfying lot of minor monsters, and a grand battle that creates the Enlish Channel. But _The Haunted Wizard_ is, it seems to me, a bit overloaded with Manichean darkness, a bit too obssessed with the Battle Between Good and Evil. This sort of theme can be well done in fantasy (witness the writings of Tolkien and Rowling). But in a novel where morality is black and white, where there is Heaven and Hell, with good guys versus bad guys, the result is just a little too simplistic. I miss the light touch of the earlier novels.

The Time Machine (Xist Classics), by H.G. Wells

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up-H.G. Welles' classic begins at an English dinner party where a group of gentlemen are discussing the device that one of them is making so he can explore the fourth dimension. No one is identified by name but when the men gather the following week, the device's inventor, referred to as Time Traveler, is strangely absent. When he arrives later, he recounts his amazing sojourn into the future. Most of this 1895 novella deals with Time Traveler's stay in a world where dark forces lurk behind an idyllic exterior. After narrowly escaping from a forest fire and hostile creatures, Time Traveler uses his invention to investigate other time periods before returning to share his story with his friends. Despite the fact that he has returned with never-before-seen flowers, most of his companions do not believe him. When one of the dinner guests stops by Time Traveler's home a few days later, he is the last one to see the inventor before he and his Time Machine disappear. Ralph Cosham narrates this science fiction standard bearer with a controlled intensity that gives the story the feel of a modern drama. Add to that Welles' ability to predict some contemporary scenarios, and this recording will interest 21st century listeners. With a sturdy case and continual tracking every three minutes, this production will be a useful addition to school and public libraries that want to add classics to their science fiction holdings.Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Review First novel by H.G. Wells, published in book form in 1895. The novel is considered one of the earliest works of science fiction and the progenitor of the "time travel" subgenre. Wells advanced his social and political ideas in this narrative of a nameless Time Traveller who is hurtled into the year 802,701 by his elaborate ivory, crystal, and brass contraption. The world he finds is peopled by two races: the decadent Eloi, fluttery and useless, are dependent for food, clothing, and shelter on the simian subterranean Morlocks, who prey on them. The two races--whose names are borrowed from the Biblical Eli and Moloch--symbolize Wells's vision of the eventual result of unchecked capitalism: a neurasthenic upper class that would eventually be devoured by a proletariat driven to the depths. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature"This is undoubtedly the definitive edition of H.G. Wells s masterpiece, as fresh today in its imaginative power as the day it was written; but here refreshed by excellent introduction, notes and a comprehensive collection of appendices by Wells s contemporaries. The method could not be bettered." (Brian W. Aldiss, author of the Helliconia trilogy; Billion Year Spree: A History of Science Fiction and, most recently, White Mars: or, the Mind Set Free: A 21st-Century Utopia )"This is an invaluable edition of a text with a crucial role in modern culture. Wielding his meticulous scholarship and wide-ranging knowledge, Ruddick produces a splendid introduction and a rich selection of contextual materials." (H. General readers, students, and scholars will all be grateful for the comprehensive appendices, which provide a full selection of the scientific, philosophical, and cultural contexts out of which The Time Machine first emerged. This should be the scholarly edition for some time to come." Bruce Franklin, author or War Stars: The Superweapon and the American Imagination and Future Perfect: American Science Fiction of the Nineteenth Century )"Ruddick offers a wide-ranging and stimulating Introduction to this generously documented edition of one of the great source texts of modern science fiction. General readers, students, and scholars will all be grateful for the comprehensive appendices, which provide a full selection of the scientific, philosophical, and cultural contexts out of which The Time Machine first emerged. This should be the scholarly edition for some time to come." (Douglas Barbour )"The structure of Ruddick's book makes the complexity of The Time Machine easy to map, while the critical materials provide a basis for deep and detailed study. The impressive scholarship included ensures that it will remain a useful resource for teachers, essential for libraries and especially suitable for students or newcomers to Wells' canon." By Polymath When I tried reading this book as a child many, many years ago, some of the "big" words and allusions made it hard going, and I never completed it then. Finally, about fifteen years ago I did read it through, but still was missing something. Then, a few weeks ago, I got this edition, after having enjoyed the Penguin edition of "The War of the Worlds" with its annotations and map. Well, the annotations in this edition (about four pages worth as endnotes) of "The Time Machine" cleared away whatever fuzz remained, and I was completely overcome by the greatness of the book, great from whatever way I looked at it: plot, speculation, characters, "sense of wonder", even throw away humor were all topnotch. I couldn't believe what I'd been missing. A few days later, I read another editon of the book that didn't have notes, and had no trouble following that version. I plan to reread the book again shortly. So if you've had difficulty reading "The Time Machine" for some of the reasons mentioned above, get this version pronto and find out what a true classic is.

Wells was a founding father of the genre. This book proves that science fiction does not necessarily need to be heavily technical but does need to deal with grand themes such as the nature of society; man's hopes, dreams, and fears; and the very humanity of man. Wells does not go to great lengths in describing the time machine nor how it works. He lays the foundation of the story in science and then proceeds with his somewhat moralistic and certainly socially conscious story. This makes his writing much more enjoyable than that of a Jules Verne, who liked to fill up pages with scientific and highly technical nomenclature. One of the more striking aspects of the novel is Wells' treatment of the actual experience of time travel--moving in time is not like opening and walking through a door. There are physical and emotional aspects of the time travel process--in fact, some of the most descriptive passages in the book are those describing what the Time Traveler experiences and sees during his time shifts.Basically, Wells is posing the question of What will man be like in the distant future? His answer is quite unlike any kind of scenario that modern readers, schooled on Star Wars, Star Trek, and the like, would come up with. He gives birth to a simple and tragic society made up of the Eloi and the Morlocks. In contrasting these two groups, he offers a critique of sorts of men in his own time. Clearly, he is worried about the gap between the rich and the poor widening in his own world and is warning his readers of the dangers posed by such a growing rift. It is most interesting to see how the Time Traveler's views of the future change over the course of his stay there. At first, he basically thinks that the Morlocks, stuck underground, have been forced to do all the work of man while the Eloi on the surface play and dance around in perpetual leisure. Later, he realizes that the truth is more complicated than that. The whole book seems to be a warning against scientific omniscience and communal living. The future human society that the Time Traveler finds is supposedly ideal--free of disease, wars, discrimination, intensive labor, poverty, etc. However, the great works of man have been lost--architectural, scientific, philosophical, literary, etc.--and human beings have basically become children, each one dressing, looking, and acting the same. The time traveler opines that the loss of conflict and change that came in the wake of society's elimination of health, political, and social issues served to stagnate mankind. Without conflict, there is no achievement, and mankind atrophies both mentally and physically. This basic message of the novel is more than applicable today. While it is paramount that we continue to research and discover new scientific facts about ourselves and the world, we must not come to view science as a religion that can ultimately recreate the earth as an immense garden of Eden. Knowledge itself is far less important than the healthy pursuit of that knowledge. Man's greatness lies in his ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances. Speaking only for myself, I think this novel points out the dangerousness of Communism and points to the importance of individualism--if you engineer a society in which every person is "the same" and "equal," then you have doomed that society.

For the English-speaking world (some translations of Verne possibly aside), science fiction begins with the four brief, brilliant novels published by H G Wells in the 1890s. The War of the Worlds is a still-unsurpassed alien invasion story; The Invisible Man one of the first world-dominating mad scientist tales; and The Island of Dr Moreau a splendidly misanthropic story of artificial evolution and genetic modification. But The Time Machine came first, launching Wells' career in literature; and, after just over a century, there still isn't anything nearly like it. A Victorian inventor travels to the year 802701, where the class divisions of Wells' day have evolved two distinct human races: the helpless, childlike and luxurious Eloi and the monstrous, mechanically adept and subterranean Morlocks. Predictably, the film version turned them into the usual Good Guys and Bad Guys, though it's still worth seeing, particularly for its conception of the Time Machine itself - a splendid piece of Victorian gadgetry. The book, despite its sociological-satirical premise, is rather more complex in its treatment of the opposed races, and the Time Traveller's voyage ends, not with them, but still further in the future, with images of a dead sun and a dark earth populated only by scuttling, indefinite shadows. As in the other three novels, too, the premise of the story is carefully worked out and clearly explained - a discipline largely beyond science fiction today, in which time travel, invading aliens or whatever are simply taken for granted as convenient genre props and automatic thought-nullifiers. After more than a century, The Time Machine is still waiting for the rest of us to catch up.

By Amazon Customer "First Steps in SAP" by Sydnie McConnell and Martin Munzel is the first SAP book that I have read cover to cover. It was very easy to follow and anyone can understand and benefit from it, whether the reader is a beginner SAP user or an experienced user, even though it is geared towards the beginner user. The book is organized in three sections: 1. Introduction to SAP and standard ERP software; 2. SAP ECC basics; and 3. SAP Product Overview. The first section gives you a short history of SAP and explains what is an ERP system. The second section is especially useful for a new user since it discusses SAP interface, how to navigate the system and overview of the business processes that SAP supports. It also gives examples of some of the main business processes and how they work in SAP like procure-to-pay and order-to-cash. For further details, the book provides links to videos, which demonstrate those processes. The last section covers all products that SAP offers. It provides brief overview of each product and also what type of companies would most benefit from that product. This is a great reference to start your research when considering SAP products for your company. Throughout the whole book pictures and SAP screen shots are depicted, which make the concepts introduced easier to understand. "First Steps in SAP" is a great resource for first time users and also good reference book for experienced users. I would definitely recommend buying "First Steps in SAP".

This book was a useful, high-level introduction to SAP. I wasn't overwhelmed (which I usually am by SAP textbooks). The videos were good and helped me to understand some basic transactions since I don’t have access at work yet! Definitely recommend this book to those new to SAP.

"First Steps in SAP" is a great book for beginners and experienced SAP users By Amazon Customer "First Steps in SAP" is a great book for beginners and experienced SAP users. For users who are just starting out in SAP it will help you learn how to make your SAP experience easier by going through the menu options and business processes and how these work in SAP. I think this is a great overview for even the experienced users who might not be exposed to all the different business processes. It then goes into a more in depth explanation of each of the different SAP modules. This is great for all types of users also since I am sure there is an area where we can all learn more about. It names different transaction codes that would be useful with also the master data that needs to be maintained. The last section regarding an SAP product overview was a really good high level resource to use when beginning your companies search for different SAP products. Overall, I thought this the perfect book for new SAP users and also a great resource for the more experiences SAP user. I really enjoyed all of the SAP screen shots which made the concepts much easier to understand. I would definitely recommend "First Steps in SAP"—I really enjoyed this book!

Absolutely Inspring Direction and Confidence By Ryan Reisman I caught Nathan Haines' seminar on writing and publishing books with free software on YouTube and I knew right away he was one of those sharp and funny computer gurus who could explain things in a fun, educational and entertaining way to even the most dense of computer geeks (that would be me) -- and his "Beginning Ubuntu" didn't disappoint. Trust me when I say I don't know Linux from Lucy, and the phrase "open source" used to send me off into some inexplicable diving board jump-off haze, but after I read this book, I walked away with not only the confidence to jump into the growing Ubuntu community, but a complete comfort level with the treasure chest of free software Haines lays out for home and business use. This book is the brand new bible of Ubuntu, the go-to for everything, and Haines takes it a step at a time with the wit, clarity and cohesiveness that'll appeal to everyone from the novice like me all the way up to the clear experts like him. For anybody who has even remotely considered leaving the familiar but frequently-frustrating nest of the WIndows or Mac OS X operating systems behind, this is the book that'll give you wings. Absolutely inspiring direction and confidence.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pretty good Ubuntu book for beginners! By Sujeevan Vijayakumaran Note: I received a copy of this book for review purposes.# What is in it?The book is divided into six different chapters and two appendices. It was written by Nathan Haines, who is a long time Ubuntu User, Ubuntu Community Contributor and organisator of UbuCon at SCaLE. The book was published by Apress and has a length of 244 pages. The book starts with some information about the author, about the technical reviewer and the acknowledgments. In the introduction Nathan gives a decent introduction into Ubuntu, where he covers the main topics of Ubuntu. This includes the special parts of Ubuntu, the philosophy and some information about Linux itself. The first chapter deals with the installation of Ubuntu. It not only covers the standard Ubuntu Desktop Installation with Unity, but also the different flavors. This includes Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME and also Ubuntu Server. He gives detailed instructions how to install the system and what the effects of the different actions are. The title of the book is saying, that it is targeted for Windows and Mac users. Therefore, the whole instructions are written in way that Windows and Mac users see the differences between the systems and they can also create the installation DVDs and USB-Sticks from their system. It also covers the installation of a dual-boot installation, either with Windows or with running Mac OS X alongside Ubuntu. The introduction and installation already covered roughly a quarter of the book. In the second chapter, the topic is how to getting started with Ubuntu. In this part, it gives an introduction how to use the Unity Desktop, where you find the Dash, what the indicators are and showing how to use the Unity-HUD. It also covers the installation of software and updating the system using the Software Center. The book is not only about Ubuntu , it also gives a guidance how to set up your Ubuntu Desktop in a network with Windows, especially how to connect to a Windows-Machine using RDP or how to access files in the local network using the SMB-Protocol.The third chapter is all about productivity at home and work. It showcases all the different applications that are either pre-installed or are installable and helps you to get things done at work and at home. Precisely, it covers basic instructions of FocusWriter, HomeBank, Evolution, Thunderbird with Lightning, using Google with the Online Accounts feature, Empathy, FreeMind and others. The fourth chapter handles the media entertainment. This basically covers the usage of DVDs, VLC and how you can organize your music and podcasts with Rhythmbox. Additionally, it also covers the applicactions Brasero, DeVeDe, Shotwell, Audacity and a few more programs. The topic of the fifth chapter is the command-line. The author gives an introduction on how to use the basic commands of the command-line, which tools are available and why it might be good option to use it. On the following pages, there are also explanation how to use nano to edit files, alpine to read mails and use irssi to use IRC.The last chapter is all about power user tools. This includes the topics how to manage processes, disks and thumb drives or how to use multiple workspaces properly. Additionally, the reader gets some information about the commands to install applications through the command line or how to work with virtual machines. The book ends with two appendices covering the Ubuntu release strategy and the future of Ubuntu, with Snappy and Ubuntu Phone.# How well is it written? As the title of this book already say, this book is mainly targeted for beginners who already used Windows or Mac OS X. The explanation are always straightforward and mostly not complex. The reader of the book gets a good overview of Ubuntu and how to use most of the pre-installed software. Nearly every application is also presented by a screenshot. As a beginner, you shouldn't have any problems to getting started with Ubuntu with this book. You see that the author is very experience with Ubuntu, which is actually true ;-).# CritiqueThe most parts of the book covers topics on how to use different applications. Mostly one application per category was picked, which were then explained. All the explanations were neither too short nor too long. Nathan always mentioned other similar programs of the same category. Anyway, sometimes the selection was a bit surprising. In my opinion one of my important programs for Ubuntu beginners is the LibreOffice Suite, which isn't covered in this book. Instead of LibreOffice, FocusWriter was focused. On the other side there were also a few applications which I wouldn't expect, like the command-line mail client alpine. This is the only small minus point for me. Except this, the book is perfect for beginners! As an experienced Ubuntu users, you probably don't learn many new things. Even though, I found a couple of applications which I never heard of.

By Lee Be Three The story contained in this book is as interesting as the author's name. It contains all of the elements that a good novel dare possess: a well thought out, diverse and complex plot - interesting characters that are introduced and developed well - scene descriptions that paint word pictures, and thus place you into the reality of the setting - chapter by chapter cravings that keep you reading on, and subsequently losing sleep in the quest for what next takes place - emotional swings that have your nails scratching deep into the edge of your Kindle......and so much more. This book leaves you WANTING more! Long live the good King Landri Altard in many a Cordillera sequel. A hearty "Done well" and hear-hear to "Well done"!!

A Classroom Favorite By Mrs. H I am a fourth grade teacher who utilizes Book Clubs (small reading groups of 7-10 students) in my classroom to supplement my Language Arts curriculum. I am always looking for new books to have my students read in small groups, or as a core literature unit for the whole class. Books I choose for the kids have to peak their interest, so that students are motivated to read the book week after week. They also need to have a complex plot, so that students are able to have meaningful discussions with each other in their groups each week. I heard about L. Benedict Dunn's book and thought I would read it to see if it could work in my classroom. I absolutely LOVED Cordillera! It is not only a great read for adults, but its content is appropriate for upper grade elementary students. The plot will allow my students to utilize various comprehension strategies, such as inference, cause and effect, making generalizations, comparing and contrasting, and identifying story elements. I can also use it to discuss themes in literature, as there are plenty of themes to discuss in the book (courage, forgiveness, overcoming difficulties, jealousy, friendship, etc.). The possibilities are endless! I have already purchased a class set. Well done, Mr. Dunn!

Dunn as soon as it was delivered to my Kindle- and I am LOVING it. Brilliant storytelling. This is a breath of fresh air to this genre! The characters are interesting, and multi-dimensional. I have a feeling some of them will surprise and shock us in the end. I love the concept of the story, and how each chapter is a different land within the Kingdom of Cordillera. The cities/villages/towns are imaginative and each more unique than the last. Just when I start to love the characters in one area of the Kingdom, I am transported to the next-which makes me feel for the characters experiencing just this. I cannot wait to see where L. Dunn is taking this story- and by the character development and writing style, I am sure it won't disappoint!

Timeless (The Cartographer Book 3), by Craig Gaydas

About the Author Even though I began my journey of writing at a late age, my desire to build worlds and create characters started at a very young age. 10 to be exact. I enjoyed world building games such as Dungeons and Dragons as well as immersing myself into superhero back stories via the "Marvel Universe" compendiums. I signed on with independent publishing house Creativia in early 2014 and haven't looked back.

In doing so, I became an instant fan of Craig Gaydas and I definitely recommend the series to all readers!I loved the adventure of the tale. It was interesting and kept me reading. I wanted to know what the fate of all the different characters were and often, I found myself surprised by what ultimately transpired. There are so many interesting twists and turns that the author takes and I am excited to see where he will take the series next! This is a thought-provoking story that teases the scientific mind with fantasy while offering a splash of romance. There really is "something for everyone" in this great book series!

I do have to admit, I kinda figured out how this would end by the last couple of chapters, but it was so masterfully written, that the ending still left me stunned. My mind was whirling with all the implications and ramifications of what Nathan had endured to complete the circle.Reborn set on my kindle for over a year and Timeless set for almost a year. But once I read book two, I had to start the last one. That's how involved I became in the storyline. Book three is the darkest one of the series. Nathan has now been reborn as a fighter instead of some naive teenager. He's had to face the painful loss of his hand, loss of Earth, and loss of many friends. Because of all these, a darker nature emerges. How much further will he go to avenge all the senseless wrongs perpetrated by the Consortium and Calypso? And now, he must face the ultimate betrayal. As with the first two books, there is a ton of action and adventure, and we meet more new characters and species. I did think the middle of the book slowed down a bit, but there was a lot of ground to cover for the plot. So, it was understandable. Believe me, the ending made up for it. Other than Nathan, my favorite character was Grillick. What I didn't like, the over use of sour this & sour that. Everyone had sour faces or words. The other two books had proofreading problems, which I overlooked as they didn't interfere with my reading pleasure, but this one just had too many. So I have to knock down my rating by one star.If you're looking for a wonderful, YA, space saga / adventure, they you need to read this book series. I give it my 4 feathers.

This is a story of what happens to a few groups of people when the Yellowstone Caldera erupts and devastates a huge portion of the United States. Everyone in the most effected states have to run for their very lives to escape the copious amounts of toxic ash that spews forth from the new super volcano. The story characters face adversity and hardships in their attempt to escape the volcano and then to try and restart their lives in a new location. As always in my stories there is no foul language or sex though there is some violence. My stories are only meant to provide an afternoon or evening of reading enjoyment. If when reading any story you find that an occasional grammatical error spoils your whole experience then you may wish to not read this story as I am sure some could be found within it despite my best efforts.

As many of Mr. Young's reviews state, it helps to prep for a disaster, in this case volcano, if you're rich or have access to lots of money, but I still enjoy reading the stories in the same way I enjoy Syfy. Disasters happen and while I can't prep to the extent Mr. Young's protaganists do, I do get ideas. I do wish he'd write about a tornado. That is my most likely disaster as I do not live near an ocean and would (I think) have the long-term affects of a super-volcano. Earthquake? Lots of stories about those. I think Mr. Young would write well about a tornado. More than once, please!
