Delilah being a beautiful plus-sized activist and Mimi By Whimsical Mystic in Maine The world described in Fatizen 24602 is in the not too distant future. While the book deliberately used fat as the sin of the day so to speak, it speaks of shame in all of its forms. By creating a powerful critique of the hypocrisies within American society in a fictional work, Fatizen 24602 boldly defends civil liberties and the right for the individual to make decisions for him or herself. It attacks the orthodoxies that many take for granted and instead, shows how when taken to their ultimate extent that those orthodoxies can hurt and yes, kill. Delilah Palladino, the stories protagonist, and Mimi Master, the antagonist, are both well-rounded characters that engage the reader. Delilah being a beautiful plus-sized activist and Mimi, an obsessive, diabolical health nut that hates everyone of size. Fatizen 24602 is a delicious battle between the two that all of us can learn from and serves up that wonderful dessert on a silver platter of language. It certainly has me desiring for more!

PB takes the currently last remaining socially-acceptable prejudice and imagines what would happen if that were taken to governmental extremes. Well written and well drawn, this book is full of evocative description, gripping plot twists, and, most interesting to me, a certain ethical ambiguity you only find in the best literature. While the author clearly hates prejudice, no character's choices come off as clearly right or without consequence. Bravo!

By Rhianna Walker Blood Bound picks up not too long after the first in the series, Moon Called. Introduced to mechanic and sometimes-coyote, Mercedes Thompson in book one we get to dive right back into her world. A walker raised by werewolves, trained in mechanics by a fae and friend to vampires and ghosts, Mercy's world is far from ordinary. Blood Bound finds her vampire friend Stefan calling on her for return of a favor from Moon Called (book one). There's a new vampire in town and he's brought a demon with him. From here the story takes off at a stop-start pace involving both the local wolf pack and the vampire seethe, even getting some of the fae involved. But it is Mercy's ability to speak to ghosts that is in high demand and eventually she saves the day.With diverse characters carried over from the first book and a few new ones salted into this one there were no faces I missed. I look forward to more unique and enjoyable characters as the series continues. Her efforts to make Mercy a girl-next-door-who-just-happens-to-be-a-shapeshifter character who is a girl most readers can relate to are spot on. I won't compare her to other characters of books in this same genre because she tops them all in sheer likability.As a native of the area Briggs' tale takes place in I was once again impressed with her knowledge of the region and pleased at how well she carried me back home through her accurate description of the simple things like the climate, local culture and real places within the area. The unique choice of location certainly adds to the story as cities like New York, New Orleans, Los Angeles and such, while all wonderful places, have been over-used in similar series. Using an area not widely known has given this series a refreshing change from the cliched and expected.If you enjoy a good paranormal tale with vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts and the like that won't get lost in between pages of sex scenes this series is for you. While there's still a tantalizing love triangle element I appreciate that Mercy is a very real woman who doesn't sport a harem of Adonis-like fellows at her beck and call. Briggs never loses the story's plot in attempts to hook her heroine up with her heroes.

By Snowbrocade Patricia Brigg brings her coyote shape-shifter character Mercy back in this sequel to Moon Called. Mercy is a rare coyote shape shifter raised by a werewolf pack. By day she works as a mechanic in a world that has only recently become aware of the fae--who live on a reservation, and werewolves--who keep a very low profile. Vampires are still not part of the mainstream.Yet Mercy seems to collect preternatural friends of all types, from her werewolf roommate, to her fae ex-boss and her vampire friend. When a demon possessed vampire goes on a killing spree, Mercy goes into action to stop him from outing the vampires in a very bad way. Her friendships and budding love-affairs with two werewolves are put to the test as Mercy resists efforts by the local vampires and werewolves to control her.Briggs does a nice job of portraying a gutsy preternatural hero in a supernatural alternate universe. Her characters are appealing and lively. The writing in Blood Bound is tight and creates spine-tingling suspense. My only gripe is that I wish it were longer!
36 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Second Book Book 3 on way By Hugh C. Haynsworth IV Ok, Mercy is a used car auto-mechanic who specializes in German manufactured cars. Mercy is also a coyote skin-walker. Her best customer is a vampire who drives around in an old VW mini-van with a Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine paint job, and her next door neighbor is the alpha-male of the local wolf pack, who she has gone out on a couple of dates with. Her room-mate is the son of the chief were-wolf in North America, who she almost eloped with when she was 16. Her ex-boss is a fey who calls himself a gremlin, and whose talent is working with metal and iron (normally poisonous to all fey.)With her first book, Moon Called, we barely meet the vampires and fey in the Tri-Cities of Eastern Washington State. In this book, not only have the weaker fey creatures been outed, but the were-wolves have also outed themselves to humanity. Vampires are still unknown however; and the local vampire sidhe queen needs help stopping a rogue vampire who is a sorcerer, a human who has invited a demon into his body giving him powers over vampires, were-wolves, and fey. Can Mercy stop this sorcerer/vampire?Part of what makes this book and series important is the look into the politics of the various supernatural groups in Briggs's modern world, and Mercy's struggles as a businesswoman and member of the paranormal community. She must also help protect her fellow humans, while struggling with her potential boyfriends, and helping all her friends whether human or paranormal. Briggs along with David Weber, Kim Harrison, and Charlaine Harris do an excellent job of this with differing levels of emphasis. By the way, I agree with Patricia Briggs that this 2nd novel is an improvement over the first novel, and I am avidly looking forward to book 3 which has been submitted to the publishers even as we speak.

By Jennifer (Romance Authors That Rock) Lexia/Maura is not only battling the life as a hunter in the compound that her mother chose for her, she is also battling the demons in her mind. While trying to stop her mother from creating more hunters, trying to protect her mate Lincoln, and also her friends that she has made inside the compound. She plays her mothers mind games, but in the end who will win in the battle of the mind games and the war within the compound?As with the other books in this series, I couldn't put it down! I read late into the night and lost sleep. But it was well worth it!

I don't know what to say without running off at the mouth with spoiler after spoiler telling what I liked about this installment. Suffice it to say I loved it. I will also say I cried during the last chapters.

In Resilience, he shares details of the frontlines that he has faced as a man, a humanitarian, a Navy SEAL, and as a leader. Yet, the true gift in this book is the humility with which it is written. We all have frontlines, he explains. Eric expertly navigates each of us through our own frontlines, whether it is found in a difficult job, a strained relationship, a search for meaning in life, or the frontlines of war.My own frontline was in the mountains of Afghanistan just a few short months ago. During the challenging deployment, I faced continual threats. These experiences began to take a very heavy toll on me. After many months of facing these challenges and with no end in sight, I allowed myself to lose hope that I would ever make it home. However, it was during this difficult time in my life that I called upon the lessons that I had previously pulled from another of Greitens’ books, The Heart and the Fist. In that book, he explained the great potential for our perspective to help us to overcome hardships. SOME DEEP THOUGHTS By Chris Jaronsky I really enjoyed one of Eric Greiten's other books, "The heart and the fist" so I was looking forward to this book. This book takes a different turn, he is helping a friend through letters. This book covers his replies to those letters as he tries to help his friend out. I was not too crazy about that format, but he really does get the topics across well. The book is very well written and it goes pretty deep. There were more than a few times while reading this book where I had to put it down and think about it for a while. Some of the writing hit pretty close to home and directly relating to my life, and the lives of some of my friends. To paraphrase the books description this really is a hopeful book letting us know that we all have problems, but we can all overcome those those problems. Being resilient we can work on those problems and bounce back.After reading two of his books I really get the feeling that this world is a better place with Eric Greitens in it. He really comes across as a person trying to make things better.

Don't ask me to choose a favorite part - I really liked it all By Phil 413 "Resilience" is about two Navy SEALs who are writing letters back and forth; Eric is trying to help his struggling friend, Drew.What I most liked about Resilience is how the topics discussed - from defining resilience, happiness, identity, your responsibilities and philosophy to the need for a role model and practicing (following your models, breaking your habits and pursuing who you want to be) - are personal and specific to the SEALs, yet easy to apply to whatever challenge you're facing as a reader. The tone of the book is perfect and I loved it: It's strong and firm, yet compassionate, understanding, and hopeful (no excuses or giving up allowed, but also no condescension or judgment). Best of all, there is no "one-size fits all" strategy. The author repeatedly reminds his friend Drew, and the reader, that each person must find his or her own plan and follow it - what we're reading are suggestions and wisdoms, stories of overcoming from people who have gone through tough times, ideas that have worked for others - but ultimately, what will work for you only you can decide.I also very much enjoyed how Eric used examples from history (Isaac Newton, several different authors, warriors, philosophers) to illustrate various concepts. The author made his many ideas - on life and how to live it in the wisest and best way a person can - interesting, thoughtful, engaging and memorable. As I was reading, I kept thinking of people I wanted to share parts of the book with. I'd read a thought, idea or quote and think, "I need to write this down!" But then I'd read the next thought or example and I liked so much of the book I couldn't write down all the parts I enjoyed - I'll just have to give a copy of the book to my friends and family who need it the most.

I have zero clue how she keeps track of everything but somehow it all works. This installment releases huge secrets, a massive amount of suspense and big big changes.Riley is left in hell. He’s been stabbed by Benjamin just before he was shoved behind the gates of hell as the door slammed shut. He’s dying and he doesn’t care – except that he wants Paige. He NEEDS Paige. He finds himself in a room with his mother and sister who are still possessed by demons. They care for him, try to keep him alive, but he’s getting worse.And then Paige appears. Paige had to make another deal with the devil (aka Bruno) in order to make her way back to Riley – because when they’re together, they can do anything. Riley can FIX anything, right? Paige sure hopes so because she’s backed herself into a corner.I was losing it when the secrets started to spill out about Riley’s history. Every four seconds it’s a new detail that adds color to the black and white picture I had in my mind. It’s all starting to come together and I seriously need the rest of this story. SO BADLY.Of course there’s a cliffhanger – it’s a serial! Small points were deducted only because I wanted some more romance and action between my favorite sort-of-Goddess and her maybe-Protector. However, I’m sure they’ll make up for it in due time ;)If you’re looking for a fantastically written paranormal romance, you need to jump on this series. It’s addicting and fascinating and I want so much more.

Can I just say again how much I HATE Bruno! Riley has been left in hell and Paige is forced to make another deal with Bruno, who I swear is the devil, in order to get to Riley. However Riley is being tended to by his mother and sister who still are possessed by demons and now has doubts about his and Paige's relationship. What happens when Paige gets to him is not what I expected at all. I mean I cried, like a baby! Then what happens is sort of awesome although I have questions. Lots of questions that I am hoping get answered in the next book. Aside from the obvious are they are to have a happy ending, I need to know is Riley the Protector from long ago like we all thought? Was the Protector from before destined to become what Riley did and that is why Eva (the spirit within Paige) was destroyed along with the Protector? The list goes on and on. If you haven't read Ivy Sinclair yet then trust when I tell you that you are missing one heck of an author and series!*I received a copy of the book in exchange for my review. All opinions are 100% my own. I truly love this series!**

This series just keeps getting better and better with new and exciting twists that always leave you guessing. In this book, Riley is stuck in Hell and Paige is alone with Proctor. They'll do anything to get back to each other, but at what cost and will it be enough to fight the forces against them?I love how easy to read these installments are the only drawback is the cliffhangers! If these were all out I'd be settling in for a reading marathon for sure! The love the development of the series and of the characters and their relationship.Having multiple points of view is the best! I love how we're able to see each characters thoughts and feelings.The story continues to grow and worm its way further into my heart. This is definitely a series with great characters (Paige and Riley) that will always stay with me even when it concludes.

Park has had a horrendously bad childhood which has kept her from being able to form romantic attachments. Bas is a three hundred year old vampire who is dealing with something new in the vampire community, a vampire who is making war on other vampires. The first move in the unknown vampire's war was to turn one of Bas' blood bonded into a vampire. The next move was to set the new vampire to killing those close to Bas. Bas is just trying to compel a human into giving him a ride home when he runs into Park, who DOES'T compel. Neither does she blood bond, though her blood is exceptional. As they travel to his home, Bas falls in love with her. He also identifies her as something other than strictly human, but he can't define what.There are multiple strory arcs in this book. Although the story circles around Park and focuses on her relationship with Bas, there are multiple other arcs happening. So many, that by the end of the book, it has taken away somewhat from Park and Bas. We meet Park's friends in this book, some of whom become vampire and find mates of their own. We meet Bas' staff, who have their own secrets to play into the story. We meet Park's parents and see her unique powers develop. We find out more about what Park is and the secretive community she and Bas will now be a part of. We meet the bad guys. However the story ends with the loss of a major battle and some of our favorite characters. With so many new people running around, we don't get more than a taste of any of them. The first half of the book invests us in Park and Bas, but the second half of the book, wasn't as compelling, with too much activity and not enough focus on the connection of our main characters.

I've never really read Vampire Romance type novels before but I took a chance on this one and it paid off in a big way. The story just draws you in and leaves you wanting more. I can't wait to read more from this author! Take a chance and buy this, you won't regret it! I loved it!

The price was fantastic and so is the story. Loved the character development and the creativity of this new vampire world. While there are some gramatical errors, I did not find them distracting, I was too involved in the story. Looking forward to the next book! Hurry hurry hurry...... :)

The thing I love about my kindle is it tells me when I have already purchased a book. That function doesn't work if you have the same book under a different title. Fallen Star series and Scattered Promises is the same...? Other than that, I love this series and it's a great read.

From the Back Cover Henry David Thoreau's Civil Disobedience was originally published in 1849 as Resistance to Civil Government. Thoreau wrote this classic essay to advocate public resistance to the laws and acts of government that he considered unjust. The practical application of Civil Disobedience was largely ignored until the twentieth century when, at different times, Modanda Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and anti-Vietnam War activists applied Thoreau's principles.
About the Author Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, and philosopher, who is best known for his works Waldena treatise about living in concert with the natural worldand Civil Disobedience, in which he espoused the need to morally resist the actions of an unjust state. Thoreau s work heavily reflects the ideologies of the American transcendentalists, and he has long been considered a leading figure in the movement along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott, and, at first, Nathaniel Hawthorne (who changed his views later in life). In addition to his writing, which totaled more than twenty volumes, Thoreau was an active abolitionist, and lectured regularly against the Fugitive Slave Law. Thoreau died in 1862, and is buried along with Louisa May Alcott, Ellery Channing, and other notable Americans in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.

By Ragnarok Books Civil Disobedience is one of the most importance works of philosophy ever written. Like all great works of philosophy, it is as relevant today as it has ever been, as it transcends space and time. Don't let the abolitionist nature mislead you: this book is not merely about abolition and slavery. Rather, it is about Man Against the State, individuality, and Thoreau's philosophy of how one man can stand up to government and society, driven by his own convictions of right and wrong, as summarized by the timeless quote "Any man more right than his neighbors constitutes a majority of one already".Thoreau's main point is that the best - and many times, the only - method for fighting injustice is through passive disobedience. By refusing to cooperate with the machinery of injustice, the individual can become the friction that stops the machine. Active resistance is bound for failure, as the machine (the State, society, etc.) is too formidable for the individual to fight. But, by refusing to cooperate, justice can be achieved and injustice toppled.If you are looking for a marvelous primer on individuality and the fight for justice, start with this book.

"It is not so desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right."-Henry David Thoreau By Medusa In "Civil Disobedience" Thoreau presents political theories in which he dissects democracy and the interaction between citizens and their government.Understandably, Thoreau was deeply concerned about injustices he witnessed during his life, such as enslavement of one sixth of the population and the invasion of Mexico by the United States.Thoreau does not oppose the institution of government; he believes that when a government becomes "abused and perverted", it ceases to represent the will of the people. When a government makes decisions that promulgate harm and injustice, it is the duty of its citizens to rebel and break those chains of injustices.Arguably, the strongest idea Thoreau presents, is the notion of individualism. Thoreau encourages skepticism of the government and rejects blind loyalty to it. Thoreau perceives citizens, who give blind loyalty to their government's decisions without questioning them, as participants in every injustice committed by that government. Whether this point of view is correct or not, it is worth debating, especially in view of the horrific injustices that are extant in today's world and the way the masses so easily accept them without considering the negative impact on others.

By Jeffrey Leach Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American philosopher, poet, and naturalist who moved in the same intellectual and social circles as Ralph Waldo Emerson. This Dover Thrift edition contains several important Thoreau tracts: Civil Disobedience, Slavery in Massachusetts, A Plea for Captain John Brown, Walking, and Life Without Principle. Thoreau also wrote the famous "Walden," and several other influential pieces shaped by his sense of environment and his unwavering belief in the power of the individual.In "Civil Disobedience," Thoreau discusses the role of the individual in society and government. Starting off with his famous statement, "That government is best which governs not at all," Thoreau waxes philosophic about the role of the United States government in the Mexican War and slavery. Thoreau argues that majorities in a democracy decide what the laws are because they are the strongest element in society. According to Thoreau, what is law is not necessarily right, and just because the majority decides an issue doesn't automatically make that issue palatable to a man's conscience. Individuals can, and sometimes should, oppose the majority, and they can be right even if they are in the minority. Ultimately, if laws are not reliable beacons of truth, one should appeal to one's conscience to decide what is right and wrong. However, merely deciding something is wrong is not enough if that decision is not followed by concrete action. Thoreau criticizes the voting process in this context, since anybody can vote for something. Without action following a decision, voting or supporting something is useless. This essay also contains Thoreau's account of his stay in jail for failure to pay a tax."A Plea for Captain John Brown" probably caused considerable controversy at the time of its writing. John Brown was the fire-breathing abolitionist who made the famous raid on Harper's Ferry in the 1850's. Brown eventually went to the gallows for his crimes while American citizens debated his actions. Most thought Brown a wacko, an extremely dangerous radical who threatened the social fabric of the country. Thoreau defends Brown in an essay both eloquent and naïve. This is really a panegyric to an unrealistic man who used questionable methods to attain his goal. When Thoreau refers to Brown as "an angel of light," it is necessary for the reader to remember Brown killed many people in cold blood."Walking" is the centerpiece of this collection of essays. Thoreau starts his discussion by musing on the wonders of walking in the country (sans terre, or "sauntering"), and ends up discussing nature, the movements of mankind, work, and freedom. Thoreau feels we gave up something very special when we locked ourselves in our shops and devoted our days to long hours of work. Get out! Enjoy life! Admire the trees, a sunset, and the birds! Don't give up your freedom for a wage and dull toil! These are the things Thoreau urges upon us in this essay, and he certainly has a point. This is an amazing piece of writing because it is probably more relevant today than in Thoreau's time. At least in those days vast expanses of nature still existed. Today, we must climb into our little boxes with wheels and drive for miles before we see a small forest or some mountains, while elbowing our way through all the others doing the same thing. "Walking" is a beautiful testament to a bucolic life.I find Thoreau's writings vastly superior to anything Emerson wrote. Thoreau is more accessible, cares more about concrete issues, and seems like a nicer person. Thoreau comes across as the type of guy you could shoot the breeze with for an hour or so, whereas Emerson seems aloof and esoteric. Thoreau as a person is from an era long dead, but his words continue to resonate deeply in our souls. I think I'll go take a walk.
