Wisp of a Thing: a unique contemporary fantasy where magic is hidden in plain sight and age-old rivalries simmer just beneath the surface

Alex Bledsoe's The Hum and the Shiver was named one of the Best Fiction Books of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews. Now Bledsoe returns to the isolated ridges and hollows of the Smoky Mountains to spin an equally enchanting tale of music and magic older than the hills.

Touched by a very public tragedy, musician Rob Quillen comes to Cloud County, Tennessee, in search of a song that might ease his aching heart. All he knows of the mysterious and reclusive Tufa is what he has read on the Internet: They are an enigmatic clan of swarthy, black-haired mountain people whose historical roots are lost in myth and controversy. Some people say that when the first white settlers came to the Appalachians centuries ago, they found the Tufa already there. Others hint that Tufa blood brings special gifts.

Rob finds both music and mystery in the mountains. Close-lipped locals guard their secrets, even as Rob gets caught up in a subtle power struggle he can't begin to comprehend. A vacationing wife goes missing, raising suspicions of foul play, and a strange feral girl runs wild in the woods, howling in the night like a lost spirit.

Change is coming to Cloud County, and only the night wind knows what part Rob will play when the last leaf falls from the Widow's Tree…and a timeless curse must be broken at last.

Wisp of a Thing: A Novel of the Tufa (Tufa Novels), by Alex Bledsoe

From Booklist One of the very good things about Bledsoe’s latest novel is that we can’t tell, until we’re well into the book, whether it’s a fantasy or offbeat mainstream. Musician Rob Quillen, a contestant on a TV singing competition, is devastated when his girlfriend, who was being flown to Hollywood to surprise him for the show’s final episode, is killed when her plane crashes. Told about the Tufa, a mysterious group of people living in the Great Smoky Mountains, Rob heads off to Needsville, Tennessee, in search of a song that can heal a broken heart. At first, the small town feels a little isolated, its people a bit quirky to Rob’s big-city eyes. But soon he begins to notice odd things: a graveyard that seems to have vanished when he returns to it; strange, humanlike, howling sounds from the woods. This is a very subtle book; like Graham Masterton, Bledsoe relies on the slow accumulation of tantalizing hints to give the reader a sense of something going on in the space between the words on the page. A chilling mix of fantasy, realism, and a touch of horror. --David Pitt

“This beautifully handled drama once again comes complete with fascinating characters, a persuasive setting, and intriguing complications. Bledsoe's on a roll.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“Bledsoe's rich, nearly poetic prose . . . captured me at page one and didn't let me go to the end. If you are a fan of urban fantasy, this is a book you need to add to your list today.” ―Seattle Post-Intelligencer on The Hum and the Shiver

“I loved this book for many reasons--the bone-deep mystery, the setting, the music, and the harsh beauty of its characters. It gives a new meaning to well played.” ―Rachel Caine, New York Times bestselling author of Two Weeks' Notice, on The Hum and the Shiver

“Bledsoe crafts a deceptively simple story of family and community, laced with the music and beliefs of a magical reality.” ―Library Journal, starred review on The Hum and the Shiver

“It's a mixture: folk tales and folk songs, updated with a dose of Sex and the City. Or a rustic version of 'urban fantasy,' with its suggestion that there's mystery just around the corner, hidden behind even the dullest small-town façade.” ―The Wall Street Journal on The Hum and the Shiver

“This powerful, character-driven drama occurs against an utterly convincing backdrop and owns complications enough to keep everybody compulsively turning the pages.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review on The Hum and the Shiver

I felt like I was pulled into the mysterious mountain home of the Tufa, and became part of their strange and secret world. The story is about a devastated young musician seeking a song that will heal his broken heart, but what he finds is completely unexpected. The story reveals itself slowly, twining the music of the mountains with exciting action and suspense as the young man's discovers some of the dark secrets of the Tufa, a race of people who are not at all what they seem. Alex Bledsoe is an adept storyteller with a beautifully descriptive writing style. I haven't read his other Tufa novel "The Hum and the Shiver" but I plan to get a copy soon. This was an excellent read and a story as hauntingly beautiful as a mountain melody.

I enjoy his books quite a bit, especially his fantasy-detective stories of Eddie LaCrosse. But this book blew me away. The Hum and the Shiver introduced this world of "magical" Appalachia, but Wisp of a Thing brought it home. From the first words you are drawn into a world that isn't quite right. Bledsoe slowly peels back the onion of the mystery bringing greater clarity to the story along with more and more mystery and dis-ease. (I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but it is true). These "Tufa" novels have been described as musical or lyrical. I certainly can attest that music flows through the words on the page and creates great energy, excitement, and fear. A minor chord runs throughout the novel and deepens the emotion felt by the reader.Bravo, Mr. Bledsoe. I am eager to read (and hear) more.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It's Contemporary Fantasy, but It Sure Isn't Urban By H. P. Wisp of a Thing is the sequel to Bledsoe's Hum and Shiver. It's a very loose sort of sequel and one that I think could be read without reading Hum and Shiver without too much confusion. Bledsoe returns deep into the hills of eastern Tennessee to the magical, musical Tufa people. Two of the main characters from Hum and Shiver--Bronwyn and the reverend--make only cameo appearances, and the newsman not at all. Bliss Overbay and Rockhouse Hicks, on the other hand, play increased roles, and a new character is introduced--Rob Quillen, a forlorn musician from outside looking for a song to mend his broken heart.I very much enjoyed Hum and Shiver, but it treated the nature of the Tufa as a mystery, not something to be explored in the fantastical sense. Wisp of a Thing remedies that. A lot of time is spent on the lore of the Tufa and the book is better for it. Hum and Shiver also suffered from a too-abrupt climax. The climax here is much more satisfying. It does not, unfortunately, appear to set the table for a sequel, but Hum and Shiver and Wisp of a Thing are well worth your time. Bledsoe's books succeed as fantasy and, while Ron Rash he ain't, his books succeed as regional fiction.

How to Do That Thing You Do I love to learn. I've always been a learner, so grade school and college were both extremely enjoyable for me. That doesn't mean I always got the best grades, because I never really cared about how successful I was; I just cared that I absorbed more knowledge and skills. When I was in college (early 1990s), the Internet came into its own, and my insatiable desire for knowledge found its Holy Grail. This issue of Linux Journal is dedicated to learning how to do things. If you're like me, that's an awesome prospect, so I won't delay with lots of pontificating. Reuven M. Lerner starts the issue by discussing what it means to be "fast" in the world of Web applications. It seems like a simple topic, but since speed can refer to many things, and those things can be affected by even more things, it can become complicated fairly quickly. Reuven helps you figure out how to go about speeding up your applications by identifying what you actually should be trying to do in the first place. In Dave Taylor's scripting column, you'll learn how to play with blocks. No, not blocks of data—children's letter blocks. Whether you want to spell out silly messages to your kids or just want to know how many various words you could spell with a limited number of blocks, Dave's column this month aims to please. Kyle Rankin follows Dave with his final article in his four-part series on 3D printing. He's covered a lot during the past few months, and this final article brings it all together with a how-to on using OctoPrint. It's a great Web-based program for controlling your printer, and if you're thinking about delving into the world of 3D printing, you'll want to catch Kyle's latest installment. It gives me a great amount of joy seeing space exploration once again gaining popularity in our society. I worried the end of the Space Shuttle program would start a dry spell for NASA, and although NASA's budget is continually slashed, it hasn't stopped interest in space. Last month's Perseid meteor shower, the recent flyby of Pluto and even the upcoming movie The Martian inspired me to write about how to use your computer to help enjoy the cosmos. Being Linux users doesn't hinder you from using software to view the stars, and in this month's column, I discuss the various applications available to aid in your nighttime up-looking or your ability to explore space from your monitor. By the time you read this, the software likely will have updated images from Pluto, so be sure to check it out if you're a space nut like me! Anyone who has ever been frustrated with UEFI Secure Boot will want to read Greig Paul and James Irvine's article on how to bend UEFI to your will. If you take control of its security features, you can protect your entire system by encrypting the entire disk. I love turning problems into opportunities, and this month, Greig and James provide a perfect opportunity to do just that. Charles Fisher finishes out this how-to issue with a very important look at hardening TLS and SSH encryption. Thanks to recent exploits, it's painfully obvious that the old reliable SSL encryption is no longer secure. At all. Even SSLv3 has been proven insecure, and so you need to know what to do to keep your data safe. Charles covers the nitty-gritty information on not only what versions of TLS encryption you should be using, but what ciphers are currently reliable. If you're interested in encryption, or are responsible for securing data on your network, be sure to read his article, as it gives a helpful, if sobering, look at the current state of encryption software. This issue, like every issue of Linux Journal, has many other articles, tips, reviews and community announcements. If you're a lifelong learner like me (and if you're reading Linux Journal, the chances are fairly good you are), you'll find this issue particularly enjoyable. At the very least, hopefully my article will give you a reason to go outside and look t

The author who brought you “Final Dawn” and “Countdown to Armageddon” now brings you the story of Dave Speer. Dave and his wife Sarah were preppers who saw the end coming and made plans to survive it. The one thing they had no control over, though, was the timing. And the chaos happened at the worst time possible: when Sarah and the girls went to visit relatives a thousand miles away. Dave Speer has somehow managed to survive the worst winter in recorded history. He should be overjoyed, but he’s sick with worry. He counted over a hundred nights in a row with below-freezing temperatures. Knowing he barely made it himself, he wonders how bad it was for his family, a thousand miles north, where presumably the winters would be much worse. Sarah and his girls were tough, sure. But if they weren’t prepared for such a harsh winter, if they ran short of food or water and couldn’t get more… And then there was the knowledge that the area north of Kansas City had been overrun by escaped criminals just after the world went to black. Escaped criminals who were still there unable to find transportation out of the area. Dave had planned and prepared all winter for his journey. A journey that would take him into a newly dark and evil world. A journey to Kansas City to see whether his family really did make it. And if they did, whether they were still free. Or whether they now belonged to criminals who kept them as slaves. They were alive. In his heart he had to believe that. He just couldn’t consider the alternative. And he had to go get them. Along the way Dave encounters a group of men who don't take kindly to his rifling through one of their town's abandoned stores. They beat him almost to death to teach him a lesson. He is rescued by a mysterious figure named Red, who then watches over him as he heals and befriends him. And helps him deal with young Sarah's death.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. FINALLY on the road! By Sandra B I'm glad the main character finally got on the road to try and make it to his family in Kansas. Book 2 was a little boring with him at home the whole time talking to a dead man. What disappoints me is Maloney using up a short story in book 3 to pump up the interest in other books he has written. I feel his writing should stand on its own and not take up my dollars and shorten the story for his advertisement. Will I continue with his sequel to book 4? Yes, so maybe Maloney knows what he's doing, right??? Just be warned...it's not that long of a story because he's pushing his other books.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Still Has Technical Accuracy Problems By Captain ET "The Journey" is the third book in this series and I've read all three. Overall, the books are well written. I have learned the hard way that a lot of authors of the prepping genre don't have a clue about how to write, grammar usage, and word choice. This author avoids, by and large, those pitfalls. And, he tells a pretty good yarn. However, Darrell Maloney's accuracy about technical things is sadly lacking. One of the major plot turns in this story is about his car's alternator and it has failed. However, the author doesn't have a clue about how a car's electrical system works. A gasoline internal combustion engine must have a supply of electricity in order to run. This is because sparkplugs are the means by which gasoline is ignited in the cylinder to create an explosion that drives the piston down for the power cycle. If the alternator fails, then the battery can continue to supply electrical energy so that the engine can continue to run---for a very short while. Maybe for an hour or two at the most. Then the engine dies. But Dave, the main character in the story, continues to drive the car, with a failed alternator for a couple of nights. This is an impossibility. The author's inaccuracy is distracting. In an earlier review, I pointed out that getting a car built after the year 1978 to run again after an EMP event is very difficult to do because electronics have become so integral to how the modern engine functions. One would almost have to tear down and then rebuild almost all of the major components, such as the intake manifold, replacement of the electronic fuel injection system etc. Even the fuel pump, which used to run off the engine's cam shaft mechanically is now done electronically via an electronic fuel pump. Also, the author seems to think that simple electric items, such as headlights, dome light, wiper motor, etc. would not work. However, since these components have no electronic components, they should work, absolutely. My other quibbles include Dave heading to Kansas City with only one rifile and one hand gun. As a prepper, Dave should have a lot more backup available. But, as I say, the story is interesting so I will keep reading it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended for any fan of Doctor Who By David Good Fun to see the book that the episodes "Human Nature" and "Family of Blood" were based on, and the differences between them. And of course it's always fun to have a Seventh Doctor story.Putting aside the similarities to the episodes, it was worth reading because it had a lot of differences. Like, the plot of the story was actually instigated by the Doctor, he actually wanted to try changing his personality. That was an interesting twist. And the antagonists in the book were much more alien in nature than they were in the show.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Human Nature By Jen It was a good story, but the tenth doctor and Martha did a better job at portraying this story. I rather watch the tv show on BBC .

By jlgwriter This is the third book in the The Mighty First series, and I think it's the most powerful and gut-wrenching episode thus far. Mark Bordner brings us closer to his lead characters, Minerva and Mark and their compatriots. But he also takes us into the minds of the evil Storians, and that evil will chill your soul. The Storians employ a true "scorched earth" policy, and they think nothing of using subterfuge and traitors to turn the Earthlings against themselves. It was particularly intriguing to me to read their rationalizations for their cruelty. The reader roots for the Earthlings to prevail but still respects the Storians for their cleverness and determination. Much of the action in this episode takes place in the heartland of America, a suitable location for the struggle to rescue Earth from this dark force. The battle scenes are vivid, with a dizzingly fast pace. Just as one assumes the worst is over, something else happens that keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. Mark Bordner is also showing new sophistication in this third episode with characters who grab your heartstrings with their courage, generosity, and loyalty. Minerva is a powerful role model, as she grows from naive young recruit to a married woman in love to a battle-tested warrior. This episode ends with a slightly unsettling twist, and I can't wait to see how Minerva will mature from her latest challenge. All of the episodes of The Mighty First have been great reads, but this was the best one yet. I received an advanced reading copy for this review.

Springs This Review was originally published on Kurt's Frontier.Synopsis:The battle against the Storians for central North America continues with the third installment of the The Mighty First saga. The First Global Marine Division has been hurled into the thick of the battle for Ohio. Yet Emperor Grozet is not giving up without a fight. He strikes hard at Earth’s defenses in general and at Minerva in particular, leaving her struggling with demons of her own. Someone tried to kill her father, and Mark, her husband, has been listed as killed in action. She is grief stricken and angry as the war both rages around her and within her.Review:Mark Bordner continues the saga of the First Global Marine Division in The Mighty First Episode 3: Sorrow of Enon Pass. Gears shift in this part of the story, and we see the toll the war is taking on the people. The emotional impacts fall hard and fast on Master Sergeant Minerva Carreno—an attempted on the life of her parents and seemingly loosing her husband in battle are heaped on top of an intense battlefield situation with an enemy pulling out all the stops to regain the initiative. In this book, the author shows us the brutal toll that war takes on the soldier as it grows more and more desperate. Mark Bordner captures the intrigue of black operations without getting bogged down in the technical details any more than is necessary. At the same time the action is harder and faster, while the rests are darker and more grief stricken.

There's not even been a police action for over a hundred years. The last combat veteran died long ago. Military training programs are more along the lines of basic security outings. The world changed with an alien act of war. The fight continues against the vicious Storian, who will stop at nothing to conquer the earth and its people.War hurts:"Her mother immediately came around the bed and took Minerva into her embrace. Being there was what she had needed so badly, to finally release her anguish. The pain, the anger, the utter sense of complete loss flooded out against her mother’s bosom. Cleo sniffled and gazed out the window, his jaw tight, eyes shining with moisture that he would not allow to progress into tears. He had feared this, but more than that, he feared the day that might come when it was his own daughter who would not be coming home."Mark Bordner continues the wonderful science fiction adventure in The Mighty First: Episode Two. As a master storyteller, he weaves an intricate plot, peopled with his realistic characters.

It tells of the life of survivors of a nuclear war in England. Attention to detail makes the story believable, and eery in that it seems so plausible. The characters were well developed, and you were certainly rooting for them. The plot was action packed and very enjoyable. A really great book from a new author.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Okay By Steve An interesting if rather old premise along with an okay plot. Characters were two dimensional and the dialogue was weak and contrived, however the story moved along well. This one very much had the feel of a first attempt at writing, though of a writer with potential.Overall it was readable but not something I would recommend.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Sooner May've Been Better... By Krimini I found this book began slow but it drew me in quite quickly. It was easy to envision the world as described by the main character. The writing brought the people as well as the apocalyptic wasteland to life incredibly well. Unfortunately, in my opinion, from the time that the underground city was discovered onwards the story began to drag... The last few chapters seemed over detailed, overly drawn out and not written in the same flowing fashion as the majority of the book had been. Sadly that made reading the last portion of the book slow and much harder to read, which was really disappointing because prior to that the book had been easy to read and very easy to get lost in without being bogged down by lots of what felt like unnecessary details....

Each book is the equivalent of under 70 pages, which means if you start it after dinner, it won't keep you up all night, only part of it. They're all well-written and engaging. So this is book 3 in the series, and we learn what was hinted at in the second book: There's an important reason Morgan put herself under a forgetting spell and ditched her great love. This book seemed too straightforward. It felt like middle-book-itis. It seemed to answer questions posed in the first two books rather than developing any of its own. It's a must-read if you're following the series, and ties up some loose ends. But if you want to get someone interested in this series, start them on Book one.I'm guessing next one will likely be better. (This ended on a cliff-hanger, and I will certainly buy the next book just as soon as it appears.) They're all on Kindle, so within a one-click of desire.

Our heroine is full of magic which is so much fun to read about but she also has a very dark side. I like her in the way the author brings her to life, but then comes the very dark and ugly side you would expect from this very famous character in history. I will read on to see what the next twist will be in this storyline. I again tell the author though that the cost for 60 pages is too high given what others are charging, and I will continue to download mine only as my free monthly book from Amazon.

OMG, my favorite yet By Levana Saxon I loved the first two books in the series, how could I not, but this one is my favorite, perhaps my favorite of short young adult fantasy ever. Sparrow writes in captivating and beautiful prose, and somehow manages to envelop the reader in Morgan's magical and twisted world completely.

A “gripping, heartwarming” (Bookpage) novel about a family separated by oceans, generations, and war, but connected by something much greater—the gift of wings. On March 29, 1973, Prudence Eleanor Vilkas was born with heart-shaped wings pressed accordion-style against her back. Considered a birth defect, her wings were surgically removed, leaving only the ghost of them behind. In 1980, Prudence’s mother takes her from Nashville to Florida, to a town inhabited by people who have run as far as they can without fins or wings. In this new town, Prudence is befriended by a boy who can see what others can’t, including Prudence’s ghostly wings. The unexpected and unimaginable bubble up from the depths of the Atlantic to confront Prudence when she meets her long-estranged Lithuanian grandfather and discovers a miraculous lineage beating and pulsing with past Lithuanian bird-women, storytellers with wings dragging the dirt, survivors perched on radio towers, lovers lit up like fireworks and heroes disguised as everyday men and women. Above Us Only Sky spans the 1863 January Uprising against Russian Tsarist rule in Eastern Europe to the fall of the Berlin Wall and Lithuania’s independence in 1991. It is a “daring, imaginative” (Milepost magazine) story of mutual understanding between the old and young; it is a love story, a story of survival, and most importantly, a story about disovering where we belong in the world. Young-Stone seamlessly balances Lithuanian history with magical realism in this “amazing, spellbinding, incredible journey” (Literary Hoarders).

By Cynthia Danute Cekauskas, LCSW This is a touching story---one of the loves and losses of one particular Lithuanian-American family and its journey through several generations of individuals orginating in the beautiful country of Lithuania, proudly settling in the United States but powerfully drawn back to the country from which they came many, many years later. It is a ficitional story based on true life events that happened to Lithuanian people as they suffered oppression at the hands of both Nazi German and Communist Russian occupiers.Born in the United States of Lithuanian parents who fled their homeland in 1944 as their native country was occupied by the Soviets, I found myself relating to this book in ways I could not imagine. My own family had had to endure some of the struggles that the families in this book had survived. Like some of the chracters in this book, they too were driven out of their homeland avoding the Soviet forced deportations to hard labor camps in Sibera, fortunate enough to be able to come to the United States and create lives for themselves. I too felt the strong pull to come back to Lithuania and come home to a land I had never been to before. The book tells the story of a young American woman with Lithuanian blood whose Lithuanian paternal grandfather decides that it it is time she learn something about the people from which she had descended. After a seventy year absence, the grandfather returns to Lithuania for a visit accompanied by his wife, his son and his wife and the granddaughter he finally is able to meet and with whom he establishes a lasting bond. It is during this time the grandfather also reestablishes contact with the sister he left behind in Lithuania lead to believe, years ago, that she had been raped and murdered by the Soviets. In telling this story the book goes back in time and tells of the happenings of family members as they suffered the effects of war and occupation and how, despite terrible odds, they managed to survive and go on, while at the same time, celebrating the strength of their Lithuanian spirit. It is a book full of sadness and loss, joy and triumph, a telling of an unusual "birth defect" in some of the women of the family who are born with wings! The book is magical and moving. It will keep you spellbound and touch your soul. I felt honored to have had the opportunity to read it.

Rather than completely focused on the main character, Charlie, and her survival in a destroyed world, the author does a lovely job of dealing with young adult/early 20's issues: relationships, grief, death, independence, and becoming an adult (reality sucks and rules, right?)Charlie is in love (she tells herself) with the leader, Ricky, of the band of survivors that live in an army base/fort. Every day can be a fight for survival as the established group hunts for supplies to replenish their needs. Scavengers are deadly and lurking out to rob innocents and grief eats at the survivors. But sometimes the danger is way, way closer than Charlie will ever realize.I had a great time learning more about Charlie and the world she lives in. I appreciated her sticking to her guns and morals while she becomes more of a self-assured woman. The post-apocalyptic world and its problems are realistic. Nicole, Charlie's rebel BFF, is an eye brow raising hell raiser but a good side kick to Charlie's steadfast and cautious nature.

By Julie Holloway Absolutely loved the first in the trilogy series by the remarkably talented young writer, Gabriella Wise. The story was very entertaining, mesmerizing, very visually well written. She does a great job of developing the main chacters in written description that I can picture each of them in my head. If you enjoyed the Hunger Games trilogy, this is a must read for you. There are some similarities (strong female character, life and death situations played out on many pages of this novel, serious world issues going on in this book). I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it. Many of the scenes play out so well your senses perk up (smell, hearing, taste, bodily sensations such as the hair tingling at the back your neck) you feel as though you are alongside of the main character, Charlie. The author has developed and written the characters so well into the various chapters. I can't wait for the next two books to come out so I can finish the story of Charlie, and what happens next in her life. Very well done!!

What can be better than a love story+an action story set in a post apocalyptic world? Nothing. The author uses vivid language that makes you feel as though you are there with the characters and develops the characters so you grow emotionally attached to them. I couldn't stop reading and at some points found myself was holding my breath waiting to see what was going to happen next. This book is the perfect mix of romance and action with a strong female lead to top it off. If you liked divergent or the hunger games this is the next trilogy for you.

Night's Blaze - Fallen Dragon By Alima Livzletlivz The saga of Rhys and Lily takes a turn of deception and betrayal…With Lily and Rhys confessing their feelings for each other and letting the passion building between them consume them in its fine glory, and now it’s time for trust to take its turn in their relationship. As the intel regarding the attack behind Rhys seems to become a little more clear, Lily’s past comes up in the quest for finding answers, along with the fact that Lily is the mortal being blackmailed into finding the opening into Dreagan’s guarded land…to find that ultimate weapon being guarded by Con with his life.I love the way the story progresses, with all cards on the table as Lily’s true identity comes into light. With the Dragon Kings planning a course of action to bring down the pawns in the game to get to the main player in this chess game, Rhys and Lily need to trust each other with their lives, as Lily will be the key player in this plan.Night’s Blaze, Part 3 (Chapters 21-30), keeps the adrenaline and passion on Dreagan Land going at a fiery speed. You can feel the aura of danger surrounding the Dragons, and the main threat to Lily’s life, should the plan go awry. The anticipation is high on drama and the anti-climax is nail biting.Received an ARC from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley for an honest review

I’m always glad to see the Dark Kings face the truth about their feelings. This time Rhys and Lily have the blackmailing by her ex to confront too. I was ready for Rhys and her to get on the same pageso this is a welcome event. The ending of this part does leave a cliffhanger as to Lily’s safety. The big revelation is the identity of the one who has been pulling the mortal and Dark Fae together against the Dark King Dragons. I don’t want to say more and spoil it for anyone. However, I will say all my questions about Ulrik are answered for now. Not so much for one of my favorite characters, Rhi.I think I have written this before but if you have not purchased any of the installments of this book. The entire book will be out in a week, buy it then. If you have gotten Parts One and Two, you can’t miss this one now. This has been one of the best of the series.Copy provided by NetGalley for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A bit slow moving and repetitive... By Chattykat This third installment was a bit slow moving for me. Lots of repetition of information that those of us who've been following the entire series have heard before. We have a surprise character turn up out of the blue that answers some of the questions we've been having about Ulrik and his intentions. I found that interesting but at the same time... odd.I liked the bit in the beginning where Rhi is struggling with her dark side and her desire to go to Balladyn. I'm curious to know how their relationship will eventually play out.I'm not sure why but Night's Blaze isn't clicking with me as much as the previous books in the series... part of the problem for me is that I don't see Dennis as a threat at all. Doesn't take that much planning to knock off one human if you're a dragon king does it??I don't know... anyway... on to part four!

“I was thrilled to hear that Dr. Thomas Campbell decided to expand upon The China Study with The Campbell Plan. I urge anyone interested in their health to read this book because it will change how you see diet and nutrition in your everyday life.” ―Gary Player, golf icon

“Rare is the physician with the humility and the wisdom to tell us the truth -- that the lifestyle choices we make are more consequential for long term health than any pill or procedure Western medicine can provide. But Thomas Campbell, M.D., does exactly that, and what's more, goes on to explain, in a clear and deeply human way, precisely what the diet and lifestyle choices are that have been proven to lead to the healthiest possible outcomes. This excellent book has my highest recommendation.” ―John Robbins, author of Diet For A New America, The Food Revolution, and president of The Food Revolution Network

Your body (and doctor) will applaud you.” ―Amy Joy Lanou, PhD, Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Health and Wellness, University of North Carolina Asheville

“With this most worthy companion book to The China Study, Dr. Thomas Campbell is once again a superb guide on our journey to optimum health. What will strike the reader most is Dr. Campbell's admirable balance between confidence and humility. When he's not yet sure, he tells us why. When he is sure, he not only explains why, but shows us how. Don't miss it.” ―Douglas J. Lisle, Ph.D., co-Author of The Pleasure Trap

“I was thrilled to read Dr. Tom Campbell's new book, The Campbell Plan, which transforms the scientific insights of his previous groundbreaking book, The China Study, into an easy to understand and apply approach to getting and staying healthy! This book will be mandatory reading for all of our patients.” ―Alan Goldhamer, director, TrueNorth Health Center

“Reading The Campbell Plan puts you in the presence of a caring, experienced family physician who powerfully reveals the Standard American Diet as the chief culprit in our major disease epidemics: obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke, and many cancers and autoimmune diseases. This is one "doctor's appointment" you will enjoy - and benefit from all your life. Highly recommended!” ―Michael Klaper, M.D., staff physician, TrueNorth Health Center, Santa Monica, CA

“As the evidence on smoking and health became clear in the 1960's, doctors led the way by quitting smoking in record numbers. Over time it's become a standard of care to advise smokers to quit. As the evidence on a whole-food plant-based diet accumulates, more and more doctors and health-care providers will improve their diets and help their patients to do so as well. This book is a breath of fresh air.” ―Gary A. Giovino, PhD, MS, Professor and Chair, Department of Community Health and Health Behavior, University at Buffalo, SUNY

“This book is a wonderful and helpful sequel to The China Study. Tom Campbell summarizes the research demonstrating the health benefits of a whole-food, plant-based diet (why we should change our diet) and then provides very practical advice on how to adopt such a diet, even including menu plans, recipes and shopping list. I highly recommend The Campbell Plan to health professions, patients and the general public.” ―Thomas L. By Tom Dr. Campbell shares his years of research, study and professional education on the benefits of a whole food plant based diet in this most welcomed follow up to the massively successful 2005 - THE CHINA STUDY which he co-wrote with his father, T. Colin Campbell PhD, the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University. The Campbell Plan, based on scientific evidence presented in peer reviewed journals and the work of his father in The China Study, along with years of his own personal clinical experience, practicing as a family physician in Rochester NY through the University of Rochester Medical Center brings us information so dearly needed and yet often convoluted in mainstream media. This book is very well organized and easily readable. Dr. Campbell addresses a multitude of myths, controversies and major confusion the American public has on nutrition around such topics as grains, gluten, protein, fish oil. GMO's, 'does it need to be organic?' and more. He gives us very practical "this is how you can begin to incorporate the science" into your day to day life. His writing style is very down to earth with a very knowledgable yet humble tone. The personal stories are touching and it is clear to see his intention in writing this book is to help people who are far to often struggling and medicated for conditions they can treat and in many cases reverse though incorporating a WFPB (whole food, plant based) diet and the learnings in this book. It has been a while since I have been so excited about a book, but I am loving this book and cannot put it down. There are 55 recipes in the back which look incredible. The Minestrone Soup is a favorite of mine and all recipes are WFPB with no added oil. This is food the way nature intended us to eat it. Lastly, there are 18 pages of references in the back of this very well researched book. I have purchased copies for family and friends. This book WILL and IS changing lives!

The Most Important New Book For Every Physician, And For Every Person With Interest In Health and Whole Food, Plant-Based Eating By Nancy Cooper Dr. Thomas Campbell dedicates the book to the usual relatives, and then to “the patients everywhere looking to take control of their health.” This book is truly a tool for just that purpose. The book is divided into three parts. The first part is the Foundations of Health, wherein he explains the wildly successful book, The China Study, that he wrote with his father; all about what a “paleo” diet is; his Three Food Groups, which are animal products, processed plant fragments and whole plants; and what it takes to succeed at the Campbell Plan. The second part of the book covers Hot Topics. He thoroughly explores sugar, soy, oils, fats, fish, wheat, gluten, organics, GMOs, supplements and what I feel is the most important topic, that of feeding children. The third part of the book covers The 2-Week Campbell Plan. He explains the concept of Out with the Old and In with the New. Then he goes into menu planning and shopping, and making the Campbell Plan a plan for life - making it stick! Then at last comes the fun part, the Recipes!Dr. Campbell includes 19 pages (smaller print, meaning lots on a page!) of endnotes from every chapter except the one on menu planning and shopping, and his conclusion chapter. This is truly research based information, and yet is always engaging and interesting. And there is a great Index, that specifies everything from cancer to cakes, and from casein to cauliflower!I believe this book should be put into the hands of every physician in this country. I think it would start a revolution in the health and wellbeing of every American. Then we (Americans) would be the leaders of the most important movement of our time. I believe a revolution around what all of us eat every day would do no less than solve world hunger, and stop environmental degradation and violence on many levels. I do not believe I am being naive, as I have had the luxury of studying and reading about this topic in detail for the last five years, ever since having to deal with my own health issues. Most people who find this lifestyle and want to try it, do just that. They learn what they need to know to feel comfortable with it, and then they do what they decide to do with the information and move on from there. But not me. I became obsessed with the topic. I wanted to know everything from how what we are eating affects our own human health, to the ethical reasons for consuming a whole food, plant-based diet, to why we should do it for the health of our planet. I have attended conferences, online webinars, health summits and taken numerous classes from some of the most dedicated, research based leaders in the field of whole foods, plant-based eating. I feel very confident in saying that if you have any interest in how whole foods, plant-based eating can affect your health or the health of your loved ones, you should read or listen to The Campbell Plan. It will be the most beneficial use of your time, whether you are new to the idea of a whole food, plant-based way of eating or you are the most educated PhD, wanting to delve into the research. Make the time for this book. It will change your life, no matter who you are.

I am delighted to get a well written, clear, and science based book on nutrition. Of course the book advocates a whole plant life-style. Neanderthals went extinct (or got absorbed) because they could not adapt. We face a nutritional crisis. Rather than looking back to our caveman past, or our present processed, franchised, fast food system, I think our future lies along the lines of Tom Campbell's book. For much of my mid-adulthood I was 30 lbs overweight and near retirement I developed Diabetes Type II. I choose a plant based diet and exercise route. For the last five years I have been symptom free. Now as a retiree, an additional issue has shown itself. As a retired American with a modest income the price of food has become an issue. Few diets, cook books, or videos address this issue. So beside being healthy and ethical towards animals, I would like to see more concern about the cost of food. I would hope that a simple whole plant based style of living proves to be also more affordable.
