“Rios de la Luz’s writing blows minds and breaks hearts. A sort of new and bizarre Tomás Rivera, Rios is able to blend the familiar of the domestic with the all the wilderness of the universe. Her stories will grab you in places you didn’t know you had, take you by those places to where you’ve always wanted to go—though you never knew how to get there. Buy this book and enjoy that journey.” —Brian Allen Carr “In The Pulse between Dimensions and the Desert, Rios de la Luz’s writing is electric and alive. It grabs you and pulls you into her universe, one that is both familiar and foreign, a place where Martians find love, bad guys get their ears cut off, and time travel agents save lost children. In this innovative, heartfelt debut, de la Luz takes her place as a young author that demands to be read and watched.” —Juliet Escoria

They're really powerful, and de la Luz uses second person maybe better than anyone I've ever come across. It's a varied collection. Some stories are brutal, some painful, some terse and violent, some whimsical, but all of them carrying a strong sense of self. They're stories about identity, both personal, sexual, and cultural. They're about people who don't usually get perspectives in fiction. The women brutalised by men, the poor, the women who work endlessly just to keep from drowning, the shamed, the enraged, the colonised.Colonise your colonisers. That's one of my favorite quotes from Giannina Braschi, and I feel that's what this collection is doing. It's giving a voice to the voiceless. It's forcing your eyes on the ramifications of the white supremacist patriarchal world we've built and inhabit. But, yeah, really impressive stuff.

By LMangumFiction With The Pulse between Dimensions and the Desert, newcomer Rios de la Luz delivers a collection of stories that will stay with you long after you've read the last page. The tales here seem linked somehow, as many of the characters have the same names and there are recurring themes, but exist just as well independently of each other. Honest, beautiful, sad, angry, and strange, the stories contained within The Pulse between Dimensions and the Desert span the vast expanse of human emotion. Most interesting are the small, half-page vignettes that make up the middle portion of the book, and the final story with its deeply resonating closing sentences: "I exist in a space with good souls. I exist in this space and it inevitably ends." I look forward to seeing more work from de la Luz in the near future.

We are so miniscule, but we express ourselves with the magnitude of an entire galaxy.More often than not, I will purchase a book based on what I hear from others, mainly authors and avid readers such as myself. It's uncommon for me to make an impulse buy. Rios de la Luz's collection of stories, The Pulse Between Dimensions and the Desert, was one such impulse buy. With the exception of a couple blurbs on the back cover, there wasn't much else to go by, but it was the beautiful and enticing cover that ultimately made the decision for me, and I'm quite happy with my decision. Matthew Revert's cover gave off a vibe akin to something along the lines of the universe reaching out to me, wanting to show me something, and through Rios de la Luz, it totally did.Published by Ladybox Books, an imprint of Broken River Press, TPBDATD is a powerful work of literature, resonating on a variety of levels. At only 102 pages, the stories within pack hard-hitting truths, evoking a wide range of feelings, from sadness, anger, laughter, to joy. De la Luz is not afraid to explore the brutal aspects of human nature; she's not afraid to explore the harsh realities people regularly face; and she's certainly not afraid to explore the ridiculous stereotypes and ignorance that many experience on a daily basis. She brilliantly utilizes speculative elements, such as time travel, in order to place a greater emphasis on her various explorations of the layered landscapes of life. De la Luz writes of femininity, xenophobia, alienation, prejudice, abuse, racial stereotypes, broken families, adolescence, sexuality, and the simple things we find solace in, such as Xena, X-Files, Power Rangers, and Killer Instinct. Basically, she leaves no stone unturned. Some of de la Luz's stories, such as Hammer, and Lady Mescaline, are told in the second person. Considering the nature of her stories, the second person had a rather personal effect on me. It felt like I was experiencing memories that were tucked away in the darkness situated in the back of my mind. Or, the universe was showing me the memories of others; it felt like I experienced all the good and bad through their eyes, making the stories all the more impactful and resonating; my emotions went through the roof, shedding tears and feeling intense anger at the injustices suffered by those who were doing nothing more than trying to live a life free of harassment and prejudice. In some stories, time travel plays a rather integral role. In Esmai (also the name of the protagonist), a version of her, named Maribel, from another world, travels to Esmai's world to save her. Maribel tells Esmai that she's a time travel agent from portal Q2786, and saves lost children from other portals and dimensions that began on Esmai's version of earth. If the children are found alive, they would undergo rehabilitation and be sent to a foster family from another earth. Maribel is now a fugitive, though. She tells Esmai there is a political campaign against multidimensional travel. "They are marketing through xenophobia, claiming the kids my department has rescued should be left for dead. They claim the kids should not be allowed on an earth from which they were not born." Sounds crazy and absurd, right? Why would anyone campaign for such a thing? Yet it echos many problems we face today. I think de la Luz's use of time travel in this story is convey the message that, if we don't address and fight racism and xenophobia here and now, in the present, then the future is doomed; the problem will only amplify and multiply. In the case of Lupe, an abuela (grandmother) from the story, Lupe and Her Time Machine, time travel is means to show us how are children can often suffer the same pitfalls we did when we were their age. Lupe sees her daughter, Alma, suffering many of the same fates she did at such a young age. All she can do is protect her daughter and her grandchildren from any outside threats, mainly Alma's current boyfriend. Lupe builds a time machine and goes back to certain points in her past, viewing repeats of her younger life. Time travel truly illuminates these themes, bound to make anyone acknowledge the issues that threaten our lives, within and without.De la Luz also highlights adolescence, womanhood, and sexuality. In Church Busch, a girl is made to feel like an object through the church she attends. Virginity oaths are signed, and pamphlets on sexual defiance refer to young women as "tape," or a "piece of candy." At church, you are told that two virgins waiting to have sex on your wedding night is a magical experience, but all "odors and fart noises" are never discussed. Neither are the malfunctions and messiness. What the girls are told does not accurately reflect the reality of it. Throughout the story, the protagonist is also experiencing puberty, creating a wide range of emotions and problems for her. At church, she feels like an alien; however, it's because of the church, she meets Laura, her first love. I found it to be a fantastic turn of events. The one place that always made her feel like an object, that made her feel alienated and uncomfortable, is where she meets someone she likes, and actually feels safe for a change. The theme of alienation is also explored in Martian Matters; how we are made to feel alienated, or how we sometimes choose to alienate ourselves because of sexual orientation or other things. We fear what others, especially family, will think of you. In Marigolds, the power and safety of family is expressed; how, even in death, a family member can reach out to you and let you know that everything will be okay. It also shows us that death is inevitable, and we must live our lives to the fullest. Some of de la Luz's stories do a rather excellent job of depicting humans as miniscule in the grand scheme of things. We are often referred to as "specks," or we live on a rock floating through space. We step inside a crater and instantly feel "heavy." The universe is very much portrayed as a frontier, and the earth is just one tiny, tiny, tiny piece of that frontier. On this rock we live on, we are struggling to survive; struggling to eek out an existence that ultimately means nothing, yet we strive to make the best of what we have. "We are specks in this mess. We are so miniscule, but we express ourselves with the magnitude of an entire galaxy." This is all we have, and we will do what ever it takes to make the earth, our lives, and the societies found all over, worth living and fighting for.Rios de la Luz's debut collection is nothing short of powerful and resonating. She knows all aspects of human nature. She knows the goodness that can be found in us; she knows we are capable of kindness and good deeds. On the flip side, she also knows the vile and terrible things we are capable of doing to one another. De la Luz shows us that somewhere, in some part of the world, a child is taking care of him/herself because their father is long gone, and their mother is out on the streets. She shows us that someone is living in fear because of who they are; they are afraid to open because of what society will do to them. She knows that somewhere, someone is being stereotyped because of the color of their skin. A man tells a woman, "I'm really a nice guy," or "I'm just trying to compliment you." "Where are you from?" Unfortunately, ignorance and stereotyping happen far too often, and de la Luz is cleverly and brutally addresses this in some of the stories found within TPBDATD. Anyone who reads this collection of stories will be left with an unforgettable experience. The truth rings free in de la Luz's stories, and sometimes the truth is harsh, but it must be acknowledged, addressed, and faced.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Junk By Sue Bradley It's a poorly written, self-published book, filled with bad grammar, misspelled words, blinding repetition, etc. It reads like a report some fifth-grader wrote for his Introduction to Electronics class:"No one can talk about the cyber security without bringing up the word hacking." Or this, from just a couple paragraphs later: "It is not easy to categorize a given activity as hacking and in fact, it is difficult to do." Wow -- not easy AND difficult? One of my favorites, also from the first chapter: "Back in the 1960s and 1970s, the members of the youth international party tapped the telephone lines and performed pranks." Seriously...."the youth international party"?I guess the "Beginners" used in the title means people who are just beginning to be aware that there are things called "computers." The advice given is along the lines of 'don't do bad things when hacking' and 'watch out for things online that seem suspicious.'It's junk, and it's in the trash.

Knowing how you get hacked can help you tighten up your security. This book is full of information to help you understand hacking in general. A good read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A friend recommended I purchase this book to assist me in hacking ... By Jake Cook Are you a beginner who wants to learn hacking but don’t know where to start? If so you are at the right place. Since most of the books and free resources on the Internet are only meant for those who already have a considerable amount of knowledge on the subject, they fail to teach hacking for beginners. On the other head this book provides you all the knowledge you need to start your hacking journey.A friend recommended I purchase this book to assist me in hacking into my own computers and resetting them so that I can use them again. This is a excellent book that represents a great overview on hacking for beginners. It explains the basis of hacking and introduces you, using a very simple but highly descriptive language, to the basic concepts of hacking. If you want to learn hacking you must first know the prerequisite of it. I will recommend this book to others who wants to learn hacking because every chapter of this book is amazing and very helpful. Good job Jacob.

The Elementalist (The Ransomed Souls Series Book 2), by Melissa Cunningham

About the Author M.E. Cunningham came from a land, far, far away, and ended up on a little farm in northern Utah, living with numerous magical creatures: horses, chickens, dogs, cats, and a goat. Cunningham began writing quite by accident, the fall through the fabric of time dropped M.E. into the mysterious land of Terratir. Terratir is not the first magical realm Cunningham has discovered, but it is the only one to be written about so far. Favorite topics include ghosts, monsters, dragons, and magic. Cunningham also likes TV, going to the movies, and camping in the mountains as long as there are no spiders, mosquitoes, or ticks. Cunningham’s first book, Reluctant Guardian, was published in August 2013. While always in search of the strange and unexplainable, this author will write each story as it is discovered. Be on the look out!

As far as sequels go, this one takes the cake!!! The Elementalist answers questions you were left wondering after Reluctant Guardian. There is definitely more action and the journey this book takes you on is out of this world!Melissa writes with a flair for blending our world with the afterlife. Alisa has possessed the body of Claire, an elementalist. She looks at as an opportunity to reunite with Brecken. But things don't always go as planned and evil forces are at work to disrupt Idir Shall. Alisa must figure out what's happening and how to get help from Brecken, who no longer remembers her.A definite must read! One of my favorite sequels in a long time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is the sequel Reluctant Guardian fans have been waiting for! V""V By VampireLovingDork aka NerdGirlVamp This is the sequel that Reluctant Guardian fans have been waiting for! You get some of the answers that you have been waiting for since the first book but wow what a journey you have to go on. Melissa does a wonderful job of mixing in the current world with the various places in the afterlife and certainly makes you think about what might be out there.I love that YA authors are taking this sort of path and whilst this is a paranormal YA so may have a touch more leeway it brings things such as teen suicide to the surface and possibly opens the door for conversations because ALL actions have consequences.5 out of 5 stars from me! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Definitely more actionpacked and fastpaced than book one!! By CrazyBookworm Book two moves on a lot from how I remember book one being... this instalment to the series is more action-packed and fast-paced as opposed to the thought-provoking first book. We start off one year after book one ended as the two main characters are once again reintroduced when Alisa starts to possess the body of an elementalist. Finally she can take the opportunity to revisit Brecken. However, there are larger forces at work as Alisa becomes a pawn to capture Brecken.A must-read second instalment to Reluctant Guardian!! Happy reading :)

Weilert With the theme of "Weird Westerns", these stories definitely range from the "weird" to the "western". The authors also range in their writing ability, which becomes obvious when they are all read next to each other. And while this anthology would probably work better with quite a few more authors' work included, it seems to be a good starting point for this group of writers.

**A note of warning from the author;

I waited until the book was finished before writing this foreword. Now I find it difficult to encapsulate the book in a short summary, but I felt the need to forewarn you, The Reader. Many of you have probably read my previous series, Mageborn, which is set two millennia after the events in this book, so you may have some misconceptions about what you'll find here.

Unlike Mageborn, this story encounters more adult issues. The main character does not always do the 'right' thing, and in fact, cannot be called a hero. Events conspire to darken his future and twist his morality, but his choices are his own. Most importantly, the story delves into some topics of a sensitive nature, particularly sexual abuse and violence, though there is nothing graphic in the telling.

I didn't set out to write a book about those things, but they came up as part of the course of this tale, and I couldn't avoid them. Before allowing some of the situations in this book, before writing them, I sought advice from a number of friends; people who have confided in me over the years. Several of them have been through experiences that correlate to a surprising degree with some of the darker elements within this tale.

Fortunately, they had much better outcomes, and in fact, I doubt any of them would condone the choices that the main character in this story makes. My main purpose in writing this foreword is to make sure that my audience understands that I don't take the subject matter lightly.

I hated it but I couldn't put it down. If the purpose of writing a review is to help you decide if you should read this book then I can't help you. I am totally ambivalent. I hate the story. I hate the people in the story. I hate the author for leaving not a speck of soul or humanity in this horrible world he created. But I read it in 24 hours.I have to quote one of the characters in the story to explain how I feel about this book.Moira says, "This is an awful story.""I want to see how it ends."First of all this isn't really a fantasy. It's science fiction. It's kind of a cross between Hunger Games, Cloud Atlas, and Beauty and the Beast but with psychopaths.I haven't read the Mageborn books so I wasn't prepared for this author. As a fan of GRRM I would have thought I'd have pretty high tolerance for vicious societies and violence in books, but the world in this story is so violent, so vicious, and so casual about it all that it's oppressive. I couldn't find any redeeming factors in the people of this world. Except for Catherine Sayer. I guess she is the one bright spot in this universe. I just hate them all. And, like Hunger Games, it ends before we get to see the seeds of change sprout. Very frustrating. If you are a little tired of the monomyth style fantasy and you want something challenging then read this book. If you like a little Stephen King in your anti-hero then read this book. If you are writing a paper for literature class then definitely read this book. Otherwise, spare yourself and read something lighter. Like Ender's Game. Or The Stand.

By LazerWraith Some books clearly indicate where they are going. After all, with so many fiction books being published these days, it is to be expected that similar storylines would run through most of them. Even Michael Manning's earlier books in the Mageborn series were fairly predictable, albeit with a slightly different (modern?) feel and an enjoyable focus on magical research. But some books aren't like this. And this was one of the that kind.Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this only because the story is about a "bad guy." Those books can be predictable too. But - there is just so much to this tale that I can't identify a "fiction mold" it came from. It is disturbing how *real* all the abuse surrounding Daniel, given and taken, felt - I honestly had to glance away from the book a few times from discomfort. Needless to say, those aspects never drove me away for long. The worldbuilding here was also pretty exceptional, in my opinion. I enjoyed following along with Daniel as he explored different areas of magic, trying to copy from those around him and adapt enough to stay alive. Too many fantasy books leave the subject of magic awfully vague, and that made Daniel's struggle with copying spellweaving all the more distinct. And don't get me started on the relationships...wow, let me just say that you will probably cycle through all your emotions during this book, and pity will likely be the last one. While the details on the magical system made me wish I too was a mage, the human interaction made me glad to be muggle.I don't see how to continue without spoilers, so all I can do is recommend you read this book. It is about the best novel I've seen from a self-published author for a good long time now (and it doesn't cost that much too!). The writing was excellent - and if you read the early Mageborn books, you'll be glad to know that the editing is too.Speaking of editing...one of my complaints in the Mageborn books was immersion-breaking modern English language. This novel partially invalidates those complaints rather cleverly. (For example, Daniel used the phrase "icebreaker at parties" once that made me pause - he never went to a single party in the book, and I really couldn't see a peasant throwing around the word "icebreaker" except in terms of physical labor. But those phrases were rare.)Warning note: You might be confused by the occasional breaks in the narration of Daniel's story if you haven't read Manning's previous works. The narrator is the main character of the Mageborn series. I'd encourage you to read those novels as well, but this one shouldn't be too confusing if you haven't.(Note: Copied from Goodreads review.)

I always pondered what would i do if i woke one day with super powers and lets face the truth we all would be selfish at first. if we could control minds we would sleep with whom ever we found attractive or get a banker to empty the vault for a charitable donation, if we could turn invisible we would most likely spy on loved one or get up to dirty deeds. the truth of our nature is to choose the "good" path we first have to feel the consequences from taking the "bad" path... MG manning nails that on the head in this book and its extremely refreshing to read.the characters in this story are complex but east to relate too the story keeps your moving and wanting to get to the end well worth the time to read and wait for the next installment

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A great collection of well written and interesting military fantasy! By Brett Hurst I received a free advance reader copy of this title."Operation Arcana", edited by John Joseph Adams, was a great read, with consistently interesting and well written stories. The editor kept the stories on topic, military fantasy, yet diverse enough that it wasn't repetitious. The only small complaint I might make is that a couple of the stories were obviously part of a long running series, and to unfamiliar readers, these stories would be more difficult to fully understand upon first glance. However, this is only a very minor complaint as these stories were still well written and entertaining. So much so, in fact, that I am likely to seek out the series that they are a part of (which is probably the author's intention by including them). In summary, I would wholeheartedly recommend this anthology of military fantasy.

I hope the editor puts another collection together in the near future. I will look for these writers in their individual work. Certainly worth your time.

“Some stories are more explicitly Lovecraftian than others, but all demonstrate how Lovecraft's dark mythology continues to inspire outstanding tales of modern horror.” - Publisher's Weekly Many of the best weird fiction writers (and creators in most other media) have been profoundly influenced by the genre and the mythos H.P. Lovecraft created eight decades ago. Lovecraft's themes of cosmic indifference, minds invaded by the alien, and the horrors of history - written with a pervasive atmosphere of unexplainable dread - are more relevant than ever as we explore the mysteries of a universe in which our planet is infinitesimal and climatic change is overwhelming it. A few years ago, New Cthulhu : The Recent Weird presented some of the best of this new Lovecraftian fiction from the first decade of the twenty-first century. Now, New Cthulhu 2: More Recent Weird brings you more eldritch tales and even fresher fiction inspired by Lovecraft.

About the Author John Langan has taught reading and writing at Atlantic Cape Community College near Atlantic City, New Jersey, for more than twenty-five years. The author of a popular series of college textbooks on both writing and reading, John enjoys the challenge of developing materials that teach skills in an especially clear and lively way. Before teaching, he earned advanced degrees in writing at Rutgers University and in reading at Rowan University. He also spent a year writing fiction that, he says, is now at the back of a drawer waiting to be discovered and acclaimed posthumously. While in school, he supported himself by working as a truck driver, a machinist, a battery assembler, a hospital attendant, and an apple packer. John now lives with his wife, Judith Nadell, near Philadelphia. In addition to his wife and Philly sports teams, his passions include reading and turning on nonreaders to the pleasure and power of books. Through Townsend Press, his educational publishing company, he has developed the nonprofit Townsend Library, a collection of more than a hundred new and classic stories.Elizabeth Bear shares a birthday with Frodo and Bilbo Baggins. This, coupled with a tendency to read the dictionary as a child, doomed her early to penury, intransigence, friendlessness, and the writing of speculative fiction. She was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and grew up in central Connecticut with the exception of two years (which she was too young to remember very well) spent in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, in the last house with electricity before the Canadian border. She's a second-generation Swede, a third-generation Ukrainian, and a third-generation Transylvanian, with some Irish, English, Scots, Cherokee, and German thrown in for leavening. Elizabeth Bear is her real name, but not all of it. Her dogs outweigh her, and she is much beset by her cats.Bear was the recipient of the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 2005. She has won two Hugo Awards for her short fiction, a Sturgeon Award, and the Locus Award for Best First Novel. She is the author of the acclaimed Eternal Sky series, the Edda of Burdens series, and coauthor (with Sarah Monette) of the Iskryne series. Bear lives in Brookfield, Massachusetts.Sarah Monette is the author of "Melusine" and "The Virtu", and with Elizabeth Bear is co-author of "A Companion to Wolves". She was nominated for the Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 2006.John Shirley is an award-winning author, screenwriter, television writer, and songwriter. He lives in California.Charles Stross is the author of the bestselling Merchant Princes series, the Laundry series, and several stand-alone novels including "Glasshouse", "Accelerando", and "Saturn's Children". Born in Leeds, England, in 1964, Stross studied in London and Bradford, earning degrees in pharmacy and computer science. Over the next decade and a half he worked as a pharmacist, a technical writer, a software engineer, and eventually as a prolific journalist covering the IT industry. His short fiction began attracting wide attention in the late 1990s; his first novel, "Singularity Sky", appeared in 2003. He has subsequently won the Hugo Award twice. He lives with his wife in Edinburgh, Scotland, in a flat that is slightly older than the state of Texas.Carrie Vaughn survived her air force brat childhood and managed to put down roots in Colorado. Her first book, Kitty and the Midnight Hour, launched a popular series of novels about a werewolf named Kitty who hosts a talk-radio advice show. She is also the author of Voices of Dragons, her debut novel for teen readers. Ms. Vaughn lives in Colorado.Guran is the editor of horror fiction books. She writes most of the DarkEcho.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good stuff By Pepper Now here is a set of stories from more modern authors that is worth reading (as was the first one.) These stories are mostly highly engaging Lovecraftianism and kept my attention for the duration of the story. I really enjoyed "The Transition of Elizabeth Hopkins" by Caitlin R. Kiernan, and "The Boy who Followed Lovecraft," by Marc Laidlaw. Well worth having in your collection.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I finished Laird Barron’s “Mysterium Tremendum” ... By Peter Olafson ... sometime after 3 a.m. on an eerily quiet Saturday night. I did not sleep well for the remainder and the world the next day seemed slightly off.I could hardly pay this haunted slowburn a greater compliment. Not far behind are Brian Hodges’ “The Same Deep Waters As You” and John Langan’s “Bloom.” I found myself watching the latter tale in my head and even adapting it as I read. (Frank Langela was somehow cast as the father.) How did that happen? I don’t know, but I take it as a signal that, while my inner copy editor wished the story longer and slower, giving us a better feel for the fascination held by the cast-off cooler at its center, I nevertheless connected with it in some less than conscious way.And then there’s Simon Strantzas’ “On Ice.” This one’s more conventional in concept -- an arctic expedition that goes bad -- but I believed it and read every word.Would that the other 15 pieces were in the same league. (The best among them is Elizabeth Bear and Sarah Monette’s “The Wreck of the Charles Dexter Ward,” which gives us a pair of sympathetic characters, but never quite delivers on its build-up.) But this was worth the admission price just for Barron’s “Mysterium” -- one of those rare stories that tap into the Mythos’s wellspring of dread. For my money, there’s nothing harder for a writer to do well -- nor more satisfying as a reader to discover.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. and "The Boy Who Followed Lovecraft" is an excellent capstone to the collection By Lindsey These review questions are sometimes not all that helpful when dealing with anthologies. Anyway, this anthology plays upon familiar Lovecraftian themes in new and interesting ways. All of the stories were strong this time through, but Ruthanna Emrys's "Litany of Earth" was a particular standout, and "The Boy Who Followed Lovecraft" is an excellent capstone to the collection. It's also just a really nicely bound volume that isn't too enormous, a problem with some anthologies.

Like many other westerns, you have the fight of west but the twist is that you have vikings! Who wouldn't love to read about vikings and gunfights. The beginning of the book intrigues you and can get you sucked into this world that the author has woven. I cant wait for the second installment.

By Jessy This is a well-crafted tale that seamlessly melds Vikings into a Wild West genre in the era of Steampunk. Or maybe it's the future. No, forget that- it's timeless. Witty, adventurous, and suspenseful, this novel is an imaginative exploration tempered with real context. Mercier displays a masterful command of the English language, conveying scenes and dialogues effortlessly.

From award winning author Daryl Gregory comes Harrison Square, a thrilling and colorful Lovecraftian adventure of a teenage boy searching for his mother, and the macabre creatures he encounters.

Harrison Harrison-H2 to his mom-is a lonely teenager who's been terrified of the water ever since he was a toddler in California, when a huge sea creature capsized their boat, and his father vanished. One of the "sensitives" who are attuned to the supernatural world, Harrison and his mother have just moved to the worst possible place for a boy like him: Dunnsmouth, a Lovecraftian town perched on rocks above the Atlantic, where strange things go on by night, monsters lurk under the waves, and creepy teachers run the local high school. On Harrison's first day at school, his mother, a marine biologist, disappears at sea. Harrison must attempt to solve the mystery of her accident, which puts him in conflict with a strange church, a knife-wielding killer, and the Deep Ones, fish-human hybrids that live in the bay. It will take all his resources-and an unusual host of allies-to defeat the danger and find his mother.

Review

"A thoroughly entertaining novel."―Publishers Weekly

"The combination of coming-of-age story, Lovecraftian horror, and mystery is at turns gently funny and intensely scary, a tough balance that Gregory (Afterparty) pulls off successfully."―Library Journal

"A tale handled with confidence and control, with loads of salty, piscine atmosphere...Superior, with plenty of crossover teen appeal."―Kirkus Reviews

If so, you’re in for a treat with Daryl Gregory’s rather charming new book. 16 year old Harrison Harrison (H2 for short) is in Dunnsmouth, MA, with his mother Rosa (an oceanographer), who is there on a research trip, and as soon as he sets foot into Dunnsmouth Secondary, he gets an odd feeling. The school is decidedly weird: the pool is in an underground cave, the school mascot is a thresher shark, and the enigmatic Principal Montooth claims to have met Harrison’s father years ago. At first blush, the students and teachers are pretty weird, too. Harrison notices that the kids seem to communicate by finger movements, and he’s instantly intrigued. However, Harrison and his mom are barely there for a day when Rosa disappears out on the ocean, while placing research buoys. He’s already lost one parent, along with part of his leg in a swimming accident as a toddler, and he’s not about to lose his mom, so he decides to investigate. It seems that the entire town is hiding something, and it also seems that he’s being spied on by a humanoid creature with webbed hands and feet.Harrison’s cosmopolitan Aunt Sel has come to look after him, and luckily, Aunt Sel doesn’t fit the traditional guardian role, so she doesn’t discourage Harrison from digging into his mom’s disappearance. So, we’ve got a cult-like school with students that communicate by fingercant, a missing mother, and a mysterious madman that seems to be out to get Harrison. Elder Gods mythos and Harrison’s memory of an attack by an ocean leviathan certainly give the book its Lovecraftian feel, and his new friend from the sea, Lub, a humanoid, fish-like Dweller, is a delight. Harrison also finds friendship in the dour Lydia, who eventually plays a big part in his investigation into his mom’s disappearance. Harrison Squared is a fantastic read, and the author uses wry humor (especially with Lydia and also Harrison’s own narrative) to wonderful effect, which only underscores the very real terrors that Harrison must deal with. I couldn’t help but notice that Harrison Squared would be great read for teens as well, since they will certainly identify with Gregory’s take on high school. It’s rare to walk that fine line of Adult/YA crossover, but Daryl Gregory pulls it off easily, and with plenty of panache. Harrison is very easy to root for, with a gently sarcastic sense of humor, and he keeps that sense of humor, even in the face of great danger. Things get dark, but they never get too dark, and it’s as much a coming of age story for Harrison as it is an effective adventure. This is such a fun read, and if you haven’t discovered Daryl Gregory yet, this would be a great place to start.

By Bibliotropic .net The somewhat meta-prequel to We Are All Completely Fine, Harrison Squared tells the story that Jameson hinted at in WAACF, the story of his childhood experiences in Dunnsmouth, where he discovered that there’s more to the world than the mundane. I say meta-prequel because in We Are All Completely Fine, Jameson admits to having written about his experiences in the form of fiction, changing his name from Jameson Jameson to Harrison Harrison. Fiction disguised as fact disguised as fiction, and this approach from Daryl Gregory doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. This could be considered a prequel, or an in-universe novel, or both. This is what you get when you read Gregory’s novels. Something to make you think, something that isn’t quite what you expect and that challenges expectations. It’s one of the reasons why I love reading his work. This book is pretty short, a nice quick read, and between this and the protagonist being a teenager in high school, it could easily be classed as YA. I’m not entirely sure it isn’t, but it doesn’t really feel like it, at least to me. Maybe it’s because it’s the prequel to a much darker novel, maybe it’s because the publisher has its own YA imprint and this book wasn’t published through them, I don’t know. Either way, there’s enough crossover here that fans of both YA and adult fantasy can find something to like here, especially when their interest falls to Lovecraftian fiction. It’s an interesting mystery that Gregory crafts here, at first seeming like Harrison’s problem will lie in figuring out why everyone at his new school are so weird (and that goes beyond the typical teenager definition of weird; most teenagers don’t have coded finger-tapping communication, attend classes on how to reanimate frogs using a car battery, or spent morning assemblies chanting in a strange incomprehensible moaning language), progressing to solving the mystery behind his mother’s disappearance. Those who have read We Are All Completely Fine will see bits and pieces of everything Jameson talked about, from Dwellers to the Scrimshander. This was a double-edged sword, since while it was interesting to see how the character encountered all these concepts and people, in the end it felt almost as though the author was trying to shoehorn as many of them in as possible. They did all play a part in the plot, at least, but it still started to feel a bit cramped with references by the end.Still, it’s a fascinating and complex story that Gregory builds, layers upon layers of little points of interest that could have been done away with — such as fingercant — without changing the story much at all. But its their presence that adds realism to the dark fantasy, which I always love to see. People are always more complex and varied than the stories they take part in; Gregory has been excellent at expressing this in prior works, and this is no exception. The bad guys are not always people who the protagonist dislikes, and the good guys are not always the ones who instantly flock to the golden boy. They’re not always intensely dedicated to one goal and one alone. And you don’t always seen everything of them during the course of the story. There were characters with stories that I very much wanted to see elaborated, particularly within the group of teens who weren’t so keen on the cult-like activities of Dunnsmouth’s adults. There’s another host of novels (or at least a large collection of short stories) in those characters, and I’d love to read them. Gregory really has the knack of making people on pages feel real and expansive.I can definitely recommend Harrison Squared to those who read and enjoyed We Are All Completely Fine. That much I’m sure of, and those who read the sequel first will probably appreciate the references and tie-ins. Those who haven’t read it, though, I think will probably think that this is definitely a decent book but probably won’t appreciate it as much as those who have stepped into the mythos beforehand. Some of the fun was in seeing what connected things to We Are All Completely Fine, and though it functions perfectly well as a standalone novel, I do recommend reading the two books together. They make a much more comprehensive picture together, complementing each other well, and the experience is better for it.

I have been wanting to read Daryl Gregory for some time but just have never quite gotten to him (despite the fact that I own two of his books which have been well reviewed). When the opportunity to review Harrison Squared came up I decided the time had finally arrived. The best thing I can say about this book is that when I was done I knew I would be quickly reading the other Gregory books I owned. I absolutely adored this book. While the book clearly falls in the teen age range it is very accessible for adults. It is a great book that never gives into many of the common cliches in teen fiction. The plot unfolds nicely revealing bits and pieces of the mystery. It's a hard book to review plot points without giving up too much of the surprising story. I'll give you the bare bones. Harrison Harrison and his mother move to the small Lovecraftian town of Dunnsmouth, Massachusetts. Harrison is a little damaged both mentally and physically. Both a direct result of an attack by a giant sea creature (at least that's how he remembers it) that cost him his leg and his dad his life.It turns out Harrison is a sensitive. His mind finely attuned to the paranormal world around him. This was probably not the right town to move to because Lovecraftian horrors abound and Harrison soon finds himself right in the middle of it all. Between his way strange high school, the deep ones, fish human hybrids, and knife wielding maniacs trying to skin him alive Harrison has his hands full. The story is often quite hilarious and creepy scary in equal amounts. What really jumped out at me was Gregory's total command of the story. His writing is fast and crisp. He is able to set the mood, keep you guessing, and introduce mountains of great characters (including Lub who may be my favorite new character of the year. I would read a whole book with him as the star). One of my favorite books this year and I hope the beginning of a wonderful relationship between me and Daryl Gregory.------This book was an advance reader's copy provided by Tor Books

"Monster? We have no such word. The closest translation would be Deemee Durawga or, one who is restless." So begins the story of the very restless Tanner, a self-serving egotistical teenager always trying to do things his way. After being raised on an alien spacecraft for ten years by beings who have no idea how to properly educate or nurture him, he decides to jump ship while stealing a time machine in the process. Traveling millions of years in the future, he brings an alien civilization out of the stone age, only to be eventually banished because of his "methods". Returning to the ship and causing even greater havoc to an attacking enemy ship and losing family members in the process, he vows to go back in time to that first night when he was "abducted" by aliens and rescue his young self from a future that seems to be nothing short of a interstellar catastrophe.

An awesome adventure story about a boy named Tanner By Nathan A very interesting book that I liked because it is adventurous and about a young boy named Tanner that grows up to be a teenager/grownup man. He is an awesome character because he is super strong, and he's on a spaceship because earth blew up from a meteor, and he's the sole earthling. There was some skipping in time in the story that you have to get used to, but you get used to it pretty fast. I can't wait for Trenton's next book to come out!I am almost ten, and it was about 3/4 appropriate. Sometimes there were ideas I didn't get and a little bit of violence. But I loved it!

The themes are of home and parenting and coming of age and in a few spots I recognize that I'm not the audience. That said, at least once every few pages I surprised myself with a laugh! Tanner's shipmates, unaware of human culture, offer earnest suggestions at times that just cracked me up. I also liked that the chapters are really short, making it an easy book to pick up before bed and spend some time with. Overall a really fun read.
