The setting is unique and intriguing, with well developed and genuinely lovable characters. A W Freyr has a refreshingly brilliant sense of humor that shines through and creates an excellent balance with the dark setting and dark deeds. I am looking forward to book 2!

No, it's not Swordspoint, and it isn't Griffith or Redmann -- the author isn't one to make the work ring like a bell, and that's OK. It has heart and charm and great joy, and I reached the last page wanting to clap "bravo" and flip off the author at the same time -- this is surely how readers of Dicken's serials must have felt. If the next two books had been available for preorder I would clicked buy right now. Not saying this as hyperbole -- I'm a bit steamed they aren't listed.I read a fair amount of LGBT fantasy and skiffy, such as it is. Mostly the characters are wretched Mary Sues. I still read and read, because, well, I read too much, and because as a teenager I read A Different Light and Sardonyx Net and Swordspoint and I remember the thrill of meeting someone I actually recognized -- not some stand in for wish fulfillment, but someone I read about and thought yes, yes -- people I know are like that, and no one I get to read about is like that. This book gave me the same feeling, and my smile muscles hurt. To do the obnoxious thing of describing an author as the hybrid of other writers (and so tell a lie) -- I'd say Elizabeth Lynn and Scott Lynch. But younger, and sweeter in a way (and not as poetic, or with quite the same catlike patience -- but with more joy and sense of play). So, well, everyone has favorite thises and thats. I'd venture to guess that before this book has been here too long it will have a few haters. Everything brave does, and the genre is so moribund that quite a few people will miss Mary Sue. The book should also have -- and really deserves -- some ardent fans. Although, if the author does not write the next one, I will be ridiculously upset.I am a cynical terrible person and I got out of bed after finishing it at midnight to write this review.

I'm not normally a huge fan of the Fantasy genre as so much of it is highly serious lore-building and elves and dwarves doing woodsy things. Freyr creates a world that is immediately recognizable--it's sort of dark medieval, with castles and royalty, but also electricity and the beginnings of plumbing. A vile, sewage-filled river gives the slummed-out city where the majority of the story takes place a reason for being important and a reason for being a place most people stay away from if they have the means. (Perhaps it's just on the pre-cusp of "steam-punk"?) Women in this world are some of the fiercest sword fighters around, and the bonds between bodyguards and the people they protect are as deeply-forged and hard-won and lost as the most important familial and romantic relationships.Into this setting whirls Lyza Dunwall; gutter-mouthed, redheaded orphan, bent on revenge for pretty much every lot life has handed her. She's practically the Tasmanian devil, swerving between protagonist, antagonist, love-interest, and comic relief. In less-capable hands, a character like Lyza would tread into Mary Sue territory. Here, Freyr fills her with so many flaws and doubts and poor judgement and rash impulsive longing--she simultaneously needs a hug and solitary confinement. She is the glue that holds together several intersecting plot lines and allows the narrative to take surprising but logical swerves through revenge tragedy, comedy, procedural crime thriller, court romance, and more. All this works so well because the text is also layered with a genuine sense of humor and affection for the characters, even despite the occasional deadly drama taking place. The prose is always efficiently entertaining and avoids needless flourish--no "Noreena's Hat Collection" chapter to gloss over. If that reference makes sense, and you enjoy a thumping-good story with genuine heart, (and you don't mind crude language and some highly explicit "kissing scenes" that *aren't* glossed over) one could do no better than to spend some time with FENCING ACADEMY. I highly look forward to the next book in the series.
