By Andrew P Miller Kneeland has written a book of short prose pieces, strung together by a strong female voice that rings loud, clear and true even in, or especially in, moments of extreme weakness and cruelty. These pieces are as full and round as a good ballad, cutting out endless scenery and dialogue that a less skilled writer would require to build the images Kneeland so quickly draws with only a single word or phrase. Reading this book in public, or just carrying it around with the title in full view, can cause quite a stir - but that is nothing compared to the emotions and empathy it will stir up in the reader.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Devastating, dark & gritty By Matt Lewis Devastating, dark, and grittier than any Noir or Horror novel ever could be. The author's frighting talent for capturing the brutal, everyday moments, along with the concessions we make in order to keep afloat in this grain thresher of a life, are envious. This is the book equivalent to a loved one turning on the garbage disposal while your hand is in it, only to find that the power is out or the fuse disconnected. It's the meat of how you deal with those issues and the questions that linger, and may always linger.

Kessler I just finished Andrea Kneeland's beyond-wonderful short story collection, "How to Pose for Hustler." There are some great sentences in this quick read, and a spare, honest style that I really dug. I had to read some of the pieces over again (and again) to try to figure out what literary economic sorcery she used in packing so many clear, devastating images into so few words. I'm still mostly baffled. Highly, highly recommended.
