About the Author Merry Shannon was born in California in 1979 and grew up a military brat. An avid reader with a deep love of language, Merry began writing at the age of seven and completed her first novel-length story when she was thirteen. She graduated in 2001 with a BA in English and currently resides in Colorado with one very noisy cat. In addition to writing, she works full-time as a child support case manager, and in her free time enjoys sewing glittery costumes and drooling over the gorgeous women of the Japanese Takarazuka theater.

This books sees two of the side characters of Sword become the main characters. It is a lot different than Sword of the Guardian and yet it is equally fulfilling. Merry Shannon's greatest gift as a writer is to write compelling characters and plots that are completely unique in each of her books. Many authors will write the same characters over and over again with minor differences per book. Merry Shannon writes completely different books, each book is a unique and beautiful journey.I loved Prayer of the Handmaiden. The story was well written, the characters were flawed and real and the journey they went on was so beautiful and unique that I highly recommend this book. The cover of this book is a poor representation of the brilliance of the story and writing, so don't let that put you off. Most fantasy books are overwritten. Merry Shannon manages to build a whole world and clear, well thought out characters without a single unnecessary word. She is one of my top lesbian authors.

Don't let the cover fool you, prayer of the Handmaiden isn't just a lesbian romance (albeit a very good one), it's also a very robust fantasy book on its own right! The worldbuilding is dense, yet kept focused; the story is well paced and engrossing, with its fair share of plot twists and drama, but not to the detriment of the character's relationship, which strikes just the right balance between being both authentic, and never dull to follow. One might just regret that side characters weren't given a significant amount of character development, making the book overeliant on the main character's at times, but it was overall a great read!

Much as I always look forward to the sequel of a book I've really enjoyed, I'm also nervous that it won't live up to expectations. A couple of chapters in I knew this would not be the case here. Merry Shannon has not gone over old ground, but instead has developed a different aspect of this well-developed fantasy world. I thoroughly enjoyed this new tale and can't wait for the next instalment.
