About the Author Robert Conroy is the author a run of hugely popular alternate history novels, including Himmler’s War and Rising Sun for Baen Books. His 1942, which is set within a Japanese conquest of Hawaii, won the prestigious Sidewise Award for alternate histories. Conroy has written for Military History magazine and has traveled extensively in Europe where he’s taken a special interest in battlefields, historical collections and castles. After a first career in business, Conroy has turned his lifelong passion for writing and military history into an immensely satisfying new occupation. He is married, lives in southeastern Michigan, and, when not writing, teaches business and economic history at a local college.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Potato Chips of Alternate History By Charles F. Kartman Mr. Conroy is an entertaining author who loves history. That does not make him an expert on whatever period he has decided to alter, but he has the tools to reliably entertain the reader who enjoys these forays. A German invasion of the United States from Mexico is a fine starting point, and the military campaign that ensues makes for a good read. His characters are good enough, except for his felt obligation to salt his story with famous names drawn mostly from the next war. These "names" have the requisite traits commonly associated with them, but are not particularly interesting otherwise. As for his Germans, some are painted as proto-Nazis while the campaign is directed by Crown Prince Wilhelm. There is a commando raid against American east-west rail lines early in the book that is interesting even as it stretches the bounds of credibility. But it is a necessary device to prevent the US from moving troops quickly against the invaders. Finally, this is not a book for those seeking to immerse themselves in the "feel" and speech of 1920. Mr. Conroy sticks to the military campaign and does his best to keep out anachronisms.

Formula, formula, formula - but a good vacation read By Olin The author has bound a formula and sticks to it - and who can blame him since the books are popular, including by myself. Maybe there's no way to do better - is there? There will always be the main male character who is somewhat reserved around women but meets his love match in a spunky young woman. A supporting female will be raped but survive and meet true love by the book end. The good guys (always Americans) will suffer major defeats at first, but tough it out and defeat the dreaded Japanese/Germans/Huns/whatever in the end. The enemy (same options) will do stupid moves that the clever Americans use against them.Still, being a sucker for alternative history stories, I buy most of Conroy's plots - although I'm thankful he's giving WWII a rest.Three stars for being a good vacation read.

By Amazon Customer I like Robert Conroy's work but I have been noting a rise in not doing his homework before he writes. In this latest story he tells the story of an invasion of the Western US but the German's in 1920 after they have beaten the French and the British in 1914.This is a very good premiss for a story given that Germany was jealous of the US and it's overseas possessions in the early 20th Century and they had attempted to course the Mexican Government into invading the US in 1916-17 to keep the US out of The European War.All very good premise until reality rears it's ugly head.San Diego, Los Angeles , San Francisco and Puget Sound were heavily protected by systems of Forts that were designed to stop fleets like the German Fleet from attacking these areas but they are never mentioned If Conroy is to be believed the entire Seaward Defence of San Francisco was designed in the fly. Mr. Conroy also conveniently forgets that the US in the Spanish American War had the Colt Machine Gun AKA the Potato Digger, and the Bernot-Merce Machine Gun was used in 1916 during Villa's Attack on Columbus NM. Yet if you read this story Mr Conroy would have you believe that until the BAR the US Army had no machine guns in it arsenal. The last complaint I have is where was Canada? As the war begins Canada does nothing while the Europeans send all the aid that they can it's as if Canada doesn't exist instead it was one of the Staunces Allies of Europe and the US in both World Wars and even today. If I was goingf to supply the Western US after it had been cut off from the East I'd use the CAnadian Railroads nioty Itallian Freighters I mean the RR is faster.So Mr Conroy you wroyte a great book but you missed the mark. Please oh please do you homework before your next book.
