On the heavily forested planet of Lumin, the Network has slept, dormant, for over six hundred cycles. Only a select few remember that it resides beneath the crust of the planet, waiting, and for them, the battle for Lumin's future has raged in the shadows. When Mia Jayne's path crosses with an ancient volume in the Archives of the Order of Vis Firmitas, the battle moves from the shadows into the light. Compendium opens up a world of knowledge, and, for the first time since arriving at the Order, Mia has the key to reclaim the freedom she lost. To do so, she must choose between her conscience and her heart. Conceived against an ailing world of fantastical beauty where long-lost technology tips the balance between extinction and survival, Mia must remember that there is always a choice, and that makes all the difference.Winner of the 2015 National Indie Excellence Award in Fantasy, silver medal in the 2015 Readers' Book Awards in Fantasy, and a finalist for the Independent Author Network's Book of the Year in the Science Fiction, Fantasy and First Novel categories.

By MaureenB When I first started reading ‘Compendium’ I was a little confused. This book starts immediately without a prologue or an introduction and I really felt like I was kind of stupid because I felt like I was missing things. Throughout the first few chapters, I kept feeling like I missed some important information and it was a little too slow for me. Fortunately for me, this book became more interesting, easier to read and I felt myself being more and more intrigued how farther I got.Half way through this book I became hooked to the story. I loved the post-apocalyptic background and the way the characters came to life for me. The world of Lumin became more real and I couldn’t stop reading because I just had to know what would happen next. I also really liked the character Mia, the way she coped with things and how she interacted with people.Although this book had a very slow start I really did like it. So how will I rate this book? The beginning didn’t work for me and I honestly think it will make some readers stop reading.. But I would recommend to keep on reading because I promise this book will get better and you won’t regret reading it. It’s definitely a four star read for me.

To address some of the other reviews that pointed out the book’s slow pace: I think those readers are just not familiar with the fantasy genre. In a category where books regularly take up to 100k words to start a story and introduce a cast, Compendium is fairly fast paced and you’re hooked at a very comfortable point. In fact, I think the book would have been better if it was longer and more time was taken to flesh out the world. It’s perfectly okay as it is, but I think there’s a lot of room for exploration (perhaps in later installments). A lot of fantasy books are slow to start, it’s sometimes necessary to saddle in the reader to the world, and as a corollary, the genre rewards readers who are patient and commit themselves to getting immersed into a world. The world of Lumin is very believable with tiny details about creatures and forestry always bringing things alive. The characters have a consistent vibe to them, and it feels natural that these are the kind of people that would live in that world (i e, there’s no disconnection between the macro and micro levels of world building). The story arc was great, and while the ending doesn’t resolve every thread, it’s good enough to keep you waiting for the second book. Without revealing any spoilers, I just want to say (addressing the complaint that the ending felt rushed), I just read Red Rising before this, and Robert Jordan before that, and both of those books (which are very commercially successful) have much faster climaxes. My only complaint is with the main character. It was refreshing to have a female main character since fantasy novels almost always have male protagonists (aside from the recent explosion in dystopian fantasies), but I sometimes ended up being unable to relate to Mia. She seemed rather helpless in many parts of the book, and it was difficult to get myself to root for her. This goes back and forth as she develops into a stronger main character, becomes more self-reliant, etc, but the impression of her as somewhat feeble character never really goes away. With this being said, still 5 stars because I felt like it was intentional and I’m sure it’s just a matter of opinion and many people will enjoy her development as a character.

The chapters bounced back and forth between the two story lines making it feel disjointed. I think if Luria would have written Melia's story and then introduced Mia, it would have flowed much better and not felt like information was missing.Lumin is a wondrous planet. I wished, however, she had spent more time with the description details. At times, some of the relationships felt rushed but, overall, very strong and likable characters. The story picks up immensely around chapter 11/12. It reels you in quickly and deeply, making you not want to put the book down. I would give the book 5 stars based on chapters 12 and up. However, the rough start really made it hard for me to keep reading. I'm glad I did, though, and can't wait for the next book.
