Good Story, Fast Pace & Interesting By LJ This book was enjoyable to read, with lots of action, multiple scenerio's and four main characters, although two were not developed to the extent of Gitty & Elgin. Nevertheless, this story is about a lonely man who sets out to discover what 'Lost Angeles' is all about, in hopes of finding a new and exciting life. His journey provides him with plenty of danger, sorrow, hope, love and happiness. This story depicts one man's innocence and timidity against the world. A man who's heart is big, and many times, his morals and values righteous.The setting is at least 10 years into a post-apocalyptic event. We don't know what happened, but it doesn't matter and the lack of that knowledge will not take away from the story line. I found myself cheering for Elgin and hoping for the best for him. The author does a great job in presentation and conveying a story with lessons, if one is willing to look that deep into it. The author also did a great job in placing Elgin 'into character' and depicting him for who he was.This book is a nice read.

A Post Apocalyptic Love Story By Cathy Murray Elgin is the narrator in 600 Miles and he is on a journey from Arizona to California hoping to take in the city of Los Angeles in the process and his main problem is that he is walking there because the story is set several decades into the future in a world of complete chaos. The cause of the apocalypse is hinted at and appears to have been all out war between the state and the people but this all happened years ago; Elgin only knows a hand to mouth existence in a world which has sunk to basest depravity and his frequent dispassionate observations of "skellies" tells you how bad things are.The story is Elgin's life over the several months of his journey; the places he passes through; the people he meets. It is a love story in the most unlikely of circumstances and an exploration of Elgin's personality as he tries to cope with the tribulations and challenges of survival. The story is full of unexpected developments and at times is tense, exciting and shocking. It is a well written novel but what I thought was exceptionally good was the way Elgin's voice comes through with a slow deliberation resonant of a time much earlier than the Armageddon.The ending of the book is, I suspect, deliberately vague and lends itself to a sequel which I for one would be quick to download.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Realistic By rcdac 600 miles by G.P. Grewal is one of the most realistic dystopian novels I have read. The setting is harsh with a sense of hopelessness. The plot and pace are spot on and keep the reader turning pages. All of the characters are well developed and three-dimensional.Grewal tells the story through the protagonist, Elgin. He is a kind of every man, not heroic in fact a bit cowardly, but you can't help rooting for him despite his flaws. Grewal gave him such a unique voice and he tells the story in such a way that the reader becomes emotionally invested in him. A writer that can make the reader feel any emotion is a good writer and G.P. Grewal is that good of writer.The one shortcoming of the story and it's rather significant, it's the ending. The ending of the story is rather disjointed and ambiguous which left this reader a bit disappointed.Do I recommend 600 miles to others? Yes with a caveat. I recommend it because the story was good enough to emotionally draw me into it, quite a rarity these days. The caveat is the ambiguous ending, it may leave some readers unsatisfied.
